Brainstorming basics

By Rt Hon John Key, Prime Minister
As the National-led Government moves into another term, we are totally focussed on the issues that matter to New Zealanders. One of those issues is health. National understands that it is only by having a strong economy that we can lift opportunities and incomes for Kiwi families, and provide world leading public services such as healthcare.
Kevin Vincent is managing director of Vincent Consulting Limited www.vincentconsulting.co.nz
A very experienced principal, newly appointed to a troubled city school, opened his door about an hour into his first day at work to find a row of faces looking back. About 10 children were lined up waiting for discipline. “What are you here for? And you, and you…?” – down the line he went. As each student replied he just said, “Go back to your classroom and get on with your work.”
New Health Minister Dr Jonathan Coleman intends to maintain the strong focus of his predecessor, Tony Ryall, on improving the quality, performance and financial sustainability of the public health system.
Nothing was said to the teachers; no punishment was meted out by the principal. As the days went by the potential chain gang outside his door grew smaller and smaller until, a week later, he opened his door to find no children.
As Minister for Sport and Recreation, he also wants to strengthen the links between exercise and health. One of the Government’s changes to public services since 2008 has been the emphasis we have put on targets and results.
Under the previous principal the school had struggled with a major discipline problem; the boss had been the external provider of discipline instead of empowering his teachers to take responsibility, to manage their own environment.
While we have a set of 10 results under our Better Public Services targets, we also have a specific set of six National Health Targets. One in particular I want to emphasise is cancer treatment. Before the 2014 election, National released a comprehensive health policy that included a focus on investing $50 million more over the next three years to help New Zealanders live free from bone, muscle and joint pain, as well as providing thousands more people with elective surgery. We also announced that if your GP suspects you have cancer, the Government will ensure you see a cancer specialist and get treatment faster. As part of this, we introduced a new, faster cancer treatment target from October 1, 2014. If your GP suspects you have cancer, you should see a cancer specialist within two weeks. Diagnostic tests and clinical investigations will be completed in a faster, more streamlined way and our goal is for 90 percent of patients getting their first cancer treatment within a maximum 62 days of their original GP’s referral. The new target is much broader than the current cancer health target, which focusses on how long patients wait to start chemotherapy and radiotherapy when they are ready to treat. The current target didn’t include surgery, which is often the first treatment step for patients, or the time patients wait to see a cancer specialist and have tests done. The maximum 62 days is an international gold standard for cancer treatment. Currently in New Zealand around 60-65 percent of patients receive their first cancer treatment within this time. The new target will be for 90 percent of patients to receive their first treatment within a maximum 62 days of seeing their GP by June 2017.
How to build this sense of ownership Ask yourself: “How do I enlist and involve my colleagues? How do I help them feel a sense of ownership with their work and with the organisation?” Mutual ownership is a climate where every person counts, regardless of position; where everyone feels they have a stake in the success and growth of the organisation. Mutual ownership happens when all staff are involved in decisions, feel free to contribute and have their ideas listened to and accepted where appropriate. Get them involved in thinking and solutions. Some examples of practical collaborative questions you can use with your team, as you enlist their input: • How can we save time? • What can we do to speed up? • What can we do to be more efficient? • What should we stop doing? • What will make our service more valuable to our customers? • How can we over-deliver? • How can we monitor changes inside and outside our industry?
Wikipedia states “Brainstorming” is a technique used to gather a large quantity of ideas. The ideas generated are geared towards solving a specific problem. Highly efficient, simply structured brainstorming by staff is essential for floating good ideas, like cream, to the top. Listening to each other’s ideas fuels rapid development of innovative solutions, builds team trust, awareness and motivation. Brainstorming is one of the creativity tools that elicit answers when they cannot be easily identified or found. It is a group activity where staff are lead by a facilitator, and if the facilitator does a good job, success and innovation are most likely to be achieved. So here are some activities that either trainers or teachers can use to help led their participants in more productive brainstorming sessions. To deliver an effective brainstorming session, rather than running laissez-faire sessions on the one hand, or heavily scripted meetings on the other, build the following “dos” and “don’ts” into an otherwise no-holds-barred process. Brainstorming do’s: • Start a brainstorming session with a short written question narrowly defining the problem to be worked on. In formulating this question don’t assume too much about how the problem is going to be solved • On a large sign in the brainstorming room post a rule prohibiting “critiquing and debating” during brainstorming. This allows a way to gently remind participants to reward rather than discourage each others’ thinking • Have only one conversation at a time • Write out ideas and put a sequential number next to each. Numbering helps participants understand how productively their brainstorming is going, and helps people keep track when jumping back and forth between ideas • The brainstorming session facilitators should sometimes encourage additional comments. Brainstorming dont’s: • Don’t let the boss speak first • Don’t insist that everyone take a turn • Don’t limit the discussion to the opinions of “experts” on any subject
• Who is watching the trends?
• Don’t brainstorm only during off-site retreats: effective brainstorming should become natural at work! • Don’t outlaw silly ideas or penalise the people who bring them up • Don’t try to write everything down.

With each passing month the memories of the global financial crisis ebb out of the economy’s collective consciousness, allowing us to act in anticipation of a promising future, opposed to stalling due to the painful past. And confidence is beginning to abound. For Auckland’s Global Engineering, moving forward into a promising future is what the company is all about. For managing director, Andrew Jackson this positive outlook is being realised in both the company’s actions, and its overview of how to conduct business. “We have a willingness to tackle jobs other companies might not touch, and with high standards of quality and attention to detail, and a vigorously competitive approach to pricing and management of resources, we have formed a solid reputation for delivering quality on time.”
A new home Perhaps indicative of this positive outlook, and the ability and willingness to tackle contracts others baulk at, Global Engineering has just moved into custom-built premises. The efficiently designed space is one that can grow and expand with the business. The 1,500 square metres of workshop houses two fabrication bays, each measuring 15 by 45 metres. The building is designed to allow new bays to be added. Plans for the third bay are already underway and expected to be completed by the end of 2015. The Kumeu site also gives Global Engineering 1,500 sqm of yard and storage space and a further 400 sqm of office and communal business space. The vast majority of Global Engineering’s work is in commercial steel construction engineering, offering a fully comprehensive service from tendering, drafting & detailing, fabricating and site erecting. However, the abilities of the company remain diverse; its skill base encompass-
es a variety of projects from high quality street lighting through to designing and building machinery for a variety of specialised manufacturing and material handling processes.
“You know you are well respected when your clients, the owners of some of Auckland’s top commercial construction companies, come to you to get structural steel when they build their own homes.”
“We take a craftsman approach to everything we do, building products of the highest quality and durability. Whether its manufacturing, fitting, fabrication, finishing, coating or erection; all receive the same dedicated attention to detail ensuring we get the best possible result.”
Andrew knows the superior reputation the company enjoys is based around its willingness to do difficult work. “We spend a lot of time getting to know every job and we work smart - looking for the best solutions and then delivering everything we promise, and more.”
The in-house advantage Helping to set the company apart from many of its competitors is that it does all of this, draughting included, completely in-house, enabling it to be in complete cost saving control from day one. “Just about everything we make is a one-off. That’s why we need to be very exact about what we do. We have developed an excellent system of checking work throughout the manufacturing process and we are continually working on quality assessment procedures, especially around material certification.” Additional computerised automation is also being introduced. First up is a new leading technology cutting saw, a Beam Line for drilling precision holes automatically and plasma cutting equipment.“Throughput is the most essential element of the process for us, so everything we invest into is around increasing production and efficiency.” The move into the new premises has facilitated this. Trucks can drive through the building and be loaded and unloaded by overhead gantry cranes, each with a capacity of 6.5 tonnes. Previously all loading was done outside with forklifts and mobile cranes. “Handling materials forms around 20 percent of our business, so to increase our ability to do this better and faster is a massive move forwards for us.” The team’s expertise does not stop when a product leaves the production line. Global Engineering has a steel erection and site installation team. “We have a high degree of flexibility and control over the delivery, erection and installation process with our own mobile cranes and truck cranes.”
Evolving via reputation Customer service ranks high on the list of attributes at Global Engineering.
On the structural steel work and metalwork side of the business, some of Global Engineering’s achievements include bridges, stadiums, commercial buildings, churches, high profile showrooms, high quality private homes, and all manner of ladders, stairs, walkways, balustrades and handrails. Recent offshore projects include Kiribati, Niue, Norfolk Island and Vanuatu, all of which have been a demonstration of the company’s robust, quality and management systems, and the ability to compete in a broader field, adds Jackson In the precision engineering side of the business, the machine shop is well equipped to handle a variety of work that has included intricate optical equipment, tunnel boring mechanisms, motor, marine, and specialised machinery - not to forget the occasional new invention.
Our highly skilled draftsmen then translate this into the 3D models and the comprehensive shop drawings for manufacturing to follow.” Jackson says in the background the software automatically produces and updates all the relevant data required for quality control throughout the model adjustments. “Consequently, every part of the process is closely monitored from initial inquiry through drafting, fabrication and finishing to delivery and installation onsite.”
Services: • Tendering • Planning • Drafting • Fabrication and welding • Surface protection • Steel erection and site installation • Metalwork • Machining • Machine building • Maintenance.
The right fit One of the biggest challenges with structural steel and metalwork in the construction industry is ensuring the thousands of parts that make up a steel structure all fit together correctly when delivered to site. Recognising the need to stay at the forefront of the industry, Global Engineering invested into specialised draughting software systems some 12 years ago. In addition to having their own in-house design and draughting team, it utilises an integrated management software as the basis of its robust quality control system. “All incoming information, from both the architectural and engineering specifications, including the client’s timeline and required delivery sequence, is fed into the management software.

Investment themes for 2015
Are you blinded by your current reality? Leigh Paulden is a certified Gazelles consultant www.ssbg.co.nz
Martin Fraser-Allen, advisor at Craigs Investment Partners www.craigsip.com
As we head into another year, the focus shifts to how the prospects for 2015 are shaping up. There are a number of economic and investment themes emerging that I think will shape the way markets perform over the coming year. Economic growth is diverging The US is leading the charge on the growth front, with monthly employment gains at the highest levels in 15 years and manufacturing indicators at a three year high. The UK is also looking solid, while Europe and Japan face low growth, high debt levels and risks of deflation and China is moving into a more moderate period of growth. New Zealand is certainly better placed than most with a stable government, falling unemployment, a strong construction sector and surging migration. There is no inflation, anywhere Almost everywhere in the world, inflation is tracking close to the bottom of central bank target ranges. Locally, consumer prices were up just one percent for the year to September and there appears to be very little pressure on any central banks to tighten monetary policy settings significantly. Interest rates to stay low, but central banks are starting to go their own way The Federal Reserve in the US and the Bank of England are expected to increase interest rates during 2015. At the other end of the scale are the Bank of Japan and the European Central Bank, where we will see additional stimulus, money printing and very low interest rates. New Zealand and Australia already have higher benchmark rates than global peers, and our central banks are likely to remain on the sidelines until late this year, or even into 2016. A mixed performance is likely for the NZ dollar The resurgent US dollar should continue to gain momentum, which should keep the NZ dollar on a steady downward trend against the greenback. We see a similar path for our currency against the British Pound, albeit probably to a lesser degree. But against the Euro and the Japanese Yen, we expect the NZ dollar to remain strong and potentially rise even further from current levels.
Finding start-up success
Richard O’Brien is the director of operations at www.nzbizbuysell.co.nz
It’s not unusual for market leading companies to fall behind start-ups. Not only are they too comfortable in their positions, they are blinded by their current reality.
Starting a business can be a good idea, especially if you have a viable idea you are passionate about and cannot find a suitable existing business to buy and re-direct.
I often observe mid-market companies who are being blindsided by trends - trends and technologies start-ups are fully versed with.
However, as failure rates show, there are risks. There are many factors to consider when you start a business, including your skills, the benefits, costs, risks and easier options.
As you launch into 2015 and revisit and adapt your strategy for growth, do not ignore what is happening out there in the world. Savvy leaders will be watching global trends - significant changes in technology, distribution, product innovation, markets, consumer and social behaviours and government regulations. All of these can have a profound effect on your business and your industry. It’s time to forget the competitor across town, look further afield - is there a company on the other side of the globe that might put you out of business? So why are so many companies not seeing the trends that could become their undoing? Verne Harnish, founder and CEO of Gazelles International, in his best selling business book Scaling Up, released in mid-2014, believes the traditional SWOT analysis is partly to blame. Almost by definition, it drives leaders to look inward at the company and its challenges. While it helps the team see the forest and trees, it tends to forget there is a world beyond that forest. I still recommend SWOT as a useful tool for mid managers, but for senior leaders it is a trap that can pull them too much into operational issues. Company leaders and executives should adopt a SWT strengths, weaknesses and trends. This will help focus them on the inherent strengths and weaknesses and the global trends threatening or having impact on their industry. Choose four to six trends that are likely to shake things up and then strategically think about how each can be managed to your advantage - or what changes need to be made to ensure you stay ahead of your competitors. As the world shrinks, clever companies will sniff out any potential rivals while there is still time to do something about it.
People start businesses for all kinds of reasons, such as the money, realising your dream, getting to control your own destiny and job security. You work on your own terms, including when you work, where, who with and how much you earn. This all sounds very good, so it’s important to remember that starting a business is considered high risk territory. To make sure you have your best chance of being on the right side of scary statistics like “53 percent of small businesses fail within the first three years,” you need to honestly assess your business idea before you start. Firstly, you need to determine that there is an opportunity in the market for what you want to do; that there is not too much competition, or a lack of interest in your product or service. Then consider whether you can secure the resources you will need including reliable suppliers, staff, a building in the right location, etc. You will also need to take into account what your start-up costs will be, how long it will realistically take to break even, and how long you are able to support a business that is not breaking even. Owning your own business now offers arguably as much job security as working for a large corporation however, starting a business from scratch is not the only way to become your own boss and you should always weigh up easier and less risky options - like buying a business. In buying and adapting an existing business you will often start with a customer base and cashflow, saving you time and money, and still be able to alter the direction of the business to be in keeping with your vision. If you are able to start up a new business with good skills, financial controls and knowledge of your market, then your chances of success are greatly improved.

Developing workplace wellbeing
Why mobile-friendly websites matter
Not wanting the situation to fester you decide to take a proactive approach to ‘mending’ things and over the course of a short period you: • Deliver some genuine compliments about them to them • Offer some help with a task they’re working on or need completed • Invest some quality time with them • Front up to them to shake their hand or give them a big hug. In doing so, and continuing to do so, evidence appears to suggest you are well on the way to enjoying an effective, lasting and mutually fulfilling relationship: • Dr John Gottman’s research into relationships that last the test of time indicates the ratio of positivity to negativity is five to one. That’s five positive interactions for every one negative interaction. • Dr Stephen Covey, the author of the best-selling Seven Habits of Highly Effective People placed a lot of importance on the ‘emotional bank account’; the concept being that when we top up each other’s emotional bank accounts (being nice to someone), we invariably build up deposits that we can draw on when we experience a negative moment in our relationships. Developing an awesome business and workplace wellbeing culture requires intentional acts so why not invest some effort into trying to use the five to one ratio and the emotional bank account? Perhaps practice with friends and family at first and see how your relationships improve at home. If all goes well, as I suspect it will, then apply some creativity to the concepts and roll them out to your marketplace and watch how appreciation and respect manifests itself amongst all your stakeholder groups.

New Zealand businesses need to start taking things seriously when it comes to providing an optimal experience for customers viewing or using their website on a smartphone or tablet.
TUESDAY, MARCH 17 -19
The whole raison d’être for most websites is to ensure that your customers or potential customers take the action you want them to take. This could be submitting an enquiry, purchasing a product or making a booking. If the website is being accessed on a smartphone or tablet it isn’t good enough that you only have a desktop version of your site. Sometimes a desktop version won’t function properly on a mobile device! It is very frustrating trying to find the information you need whilst using your phone if the website you are looking at isn’t playing ball. What does mobile-friendly mean? This means your website uses responsive web design techniques so recognises the device being used and sizes itself accordingly for optimal viewing. For example, a website will become one column on your mobile phone and if you have a large photo banner on your desktop, this will be removed on the mobile version or at least minimised so it takes up less space. Depending on your mobile target market and your industry you may actually need a dedicated mobile website or a mobile app. Nine times out of 10 you will need a responsive website, but if you are not sure which option is right for you just have a chat to your website developer and they will be able to guide you. Content on a mobile should be readable without the need to zoom. All photos and images and even forms need to resize to fit the screen. My target market is not mobile phone users This is something I hear very often. It doesn’t actually matter if you are targeting mobile users or not. They are targeting you. Give people what they need and they will come. All the statistics show that there has been a significant uptake of mobile use in New Zealand and the trend is only going to continue. REALSERVE
We use new technologies combined with years of experience to produce an accurate and trusted Rentable Area Survey
Real Estate Plans & Surveys
Win your client’s trust faster with our exact surveys of commercial real estate – your secret to sales success.
W
hen it comes to selling commercial and industrial real estate—knowledge is power. Presentation of an accurate and reliable Rentable Area Survey enables you to gain your client’s trust faster. Our experience and knowledge in the fields of surveying and drafting make us a real asset and resource to tap into for quality and expert service.
One who fully appreciates this fact is Realserve’s Director, Nigel Waller. Nigel, a Formula 1 motor racing fanatic and keen footballer with over twenty years of commercial Real Estate expertise behind him, says that having accurate and clear details of the space at your fingertips is vital to brokering a successful deal with your client. Nigel explains how Realserve steps in to provide the agent and property owner with the knowledge to fulfil due diligence obligations when buying, selling or leasing commercial real estate. Drive change
Nigel believes that in the fast paced world of commercial property transactions, Realserve’s emphasis on customer service, with fast quotes and speedy turnover of surveys, puts the agent back in the driver’s seat. Being able to provide a prospective with the floor plans and area calculations they require empowers the agent to close the deal faster. Realserve’s Marketing Floor Plans and Surveys are accurate and show the property at its best. Realserve’s General Manager, and long term commercial property consultant, Michael Larobina, knows well from experience the incalculable value of a Rentable Area Survey—an accurate, measured survey of floor space for leasing purposes.
Avoid traps for the unwary
Commit to compliance
Michael recounts a case where the floor space of a factory was found to be significantly less than the owner presumed. Imported manufacturing equipment was set to be installed by the new tenant based on available dimensions, but these plans were halted upon the realisation that the loss of several hundred square metres of floor space would critically impact the plant’s operation. Michael wryly observes that added to this disaster was the forecast loss of revenue from the reduced rentable area available to the landlord and the obvious disappointment and frustration for the tenant. Michael is quick to point out that had the proper due diligence been carried out and the exact measuring services of Realserve been engaged, such headaches would have been avoided.
James points to the fact that incorrectly quoted building areas can lead to costly disputes or litigation. Their aim is to provide the highest quality Rentable Area Surveys to match the required methods as noted in the Measurement Guide. Realserve’s surveyors and technicians offer an unbiased and impartial interpretation of the Property Council of New Zealand guidelines and are fully compliant with the Guide for the Measurement of rentable areas as set out by the Property Council (formerly known as BOMA surveys). Own absolute peace of mind
Building on years of experience determining rentable areas, James is focused and passionate about
providing peace of mind for the agent, owner and tenant, using colour coded marketing drawings to great effect. A property sale, he says, is like any other product—it has to be marketed. His team produces Floor Plan Drawings for sales or leasing campaigns. Floor plans and summaries of building areas are clearly marked and colour coding makes them easy to read by prospective buyers or tenants. Choose our additional services to enhance your reputation

Upstream choices As in every sector, innovation and the desire to delight consumers, abounds. But, as we become more aware of the greenhouse effects, sustainability and recyclable opportunities, the packaging industry has to juggle cost, functionality, efficiency, logistics, end-of-life options and waste with shelf appeal and consumer trends. Across the globe we are moving steadily towards re-thinking, reducing, recycling and reusing consumables - the packaging industry is no different, although Packaging Council of New Zealand’s (PAC.NZ) executive director, Sharon Humphreys says it is a complex balancing act. “It is not as simple as it first appears. Cost is always a powerful argument and while being eco-friendly is of prime importance, price normally wins out.” New technologically advanced materials will inevitably cost more to produce until volume and demand builds, she says, especially in a small market like New Zealand. “Making choices about what type of packaging to use is also a brand issue, for example it does not make economic sense to package a ‘budget’ brand in expensive packaging.” Advanced materials are at the forefront of research and development, examples being modified atmosphere packs, which keep produce fresher longer, and smart materials which have the ability to change colour as produce goes off. “As newer materials and niche products become more mainstream, and the volume builds, the cost will come down. But, as a consumer - are you prepared to pay the extra for the latest technologically advanced materials encasing the goods you buy?” There is also the complex balancing act to consider between using new ‘smart’ materials, which can be a complex mixture of raw materials rendering them ‘unrecyclable’ vs ‘traditional’ materials, which may be less efficient but have mature recovery infrastructure. Another upside to the adoption of newer packaging technology and materials is more efficient production lines, which use less energy and water and have less production wastage. Sharon adds that a simple change in the shape of a package can result in smarter space utilisation in containers, and light-weighting of packaging, or switching the packaging to a more lightweight material, can enable more packages per container load. These changes enable significant logistic efficiencies per load in turn providing a net environmental gain. Replas is a New Zealand company that takes post consumer waste of many kinds and recycles it. In the case of the dairy industry, they take the plastic milk bottles, re process them, turning them into slipsheets which are then sold back to the dairy (and other) industries. Replas managing director Harry Burkhardt says the slipsheets are a great example of a closed loop solution where the recycled product is later on-sold to be used in place of wooden pallets to pack large volumes of dried dairy product for transport. “Our product weighs much less than wooden pallets, is a standard size, designed to maximise the space in a container and does not waste space like a pallet does.” This space savings average 12 - 15 percent, loading times are reduced by up to 60
percent, product damage is reduced, and the plastic is more hygienic than wooden pallets. But best of all - the product is made of 100 percent recycled material produced within that industry and then used again within that same industry.” Packaging waste is as much a social issue as it is an environmental issue, says PAC. NZ. Incorrect and/or lazy disposal habits lead to littering, which devalues the role of packaging by associating packaging with waste instead of understanding the primary role of packaging, which is to prevent waste. “A change of attitude is needed if we are to satisfy the call for less packaging waste to landfill; used packaging is in demand as a raw material with the caveat of a requirement for quality – that is well separated and uncontaminated material. “To achieve this level of quality we need the right education, so that consumers understand that their disposal actions are a crucial first step in determining if the packaging can be recycled or will be destined for landfill. We need recovery infrastructure which delivers used packaging in optimum condition for further processing. And we need markets for the post-consumer packaging material to drive the economic sustainability of recovery and recycling,” Sharon says. Waste Management NZ is committed to recovering valuable resources from waste materials, even if it has been discarded to landfill. While the company recycles as much as possible, the material that can’t be recycled goes to Redvale Energy Park and Landfill north of the city. Then, through the company’s $200 million investment in clean–tech technology, benefit can still be extracted from the waste within the landfill in the form of electricity generation. Ninety five percent of the landfill gas generated from waste materials is captured, processed and directed through generators to supply renewable electricity to the local grid. Landfill gas is an inevitable by-product of the anaerobic biological decomposition process that occurs within landfills. The gas typically contains between 40 to 60 percent methane, which provides the gas with its energy content. The current generation rate would power approximately 12,000 homes, a figure that is expected to increase to 30,000 homes by 2025. Lowe Corporation is another company providing end-of-life options for packaged food products. It takes in products which are either out of date/expired, out of specification, out of cool chain temperature specification, damaged, or wrongly labeled and would have been sent to landfill for documented destruction. It de-packs the product, separating the packaging into categories for recycling. The food products are then sorted and securely transported to each end use such as rendering, stock food or composting.
To learn more about how your business can become
– downstream options This concludes our three-part series, opening up the packaging industry to reveal its complexities, fascinating dynamics and cutting edge technology, taking readers on a journey to understand that packaging far from being a poster boy for waste in today’s society it is in fact the unsung hero of the modern age which exemplifies the environmental principle of preventing more waste that it creates.
Who is the Packaging Council and how can they help your business? Packaging today touches everybody, everyday and just about everyone has an opinion on it, ranging from love-it to loathe-it and all points in between. In recent years the role of packaging has become at best unclear and at worst completely lost in the packaging waste debate. Our attention has been distracted by what packaging is, rather than what packaging does. The purpose of the Packaging Council of New Zealand is, quite simply, to advocate for the role of packaging across its whole-of-life. Our message is clear: “Packaging grows product and customer value” and our focus is to provide balanced debate to counter the disproportionate emphasis on packaging waste issues. There is an exceptional story to be told when we consider the whole-of-life of packaging. The Packaging Council is delivering that story, and they are there to help your business become a positive player in that story.

How much work is too much work? By Stephen Lynch
Researchers started studying the relationship between worker hours and productivity during WW2 when Britain was trying to maximise the efficiency and output of munitions plants in order to quickly supply weapons to the troops on the front lines. Factories pushed their workers to the limit in an effort to maximise wartime production. As you can probably imagine, the workers had a stronger core purpose (to win the war) than most of us could ever expect to invoke in our organisations, and as a result the workers were probably as highly motivated as you could ever expect people to be. What the researchers found however, is that once people start working more than 50 hours per week, their output per hour (productivity) starts to fall. As workers toil away for longer and longer hours, they lose energy and enthusiasm, which makes them less productive. Amazingly, the output of workers putting in 70 hours of work differed little from output of those working only 56 hours. In other words, working an extra 14 hours per week turned out to be a complete waste of time. Reducing their weekly hours still further from 55 down to 50 hours a week, had only small effects on output too. Interestingly, 50 hours per week seems to be the ceiling at which you start experiencing diminishing returns once you start working longer.
Recent studies documented in The Economist have shown the same correlation. Up to 49 hours, productivity is proportional to hours worked, but once you exceed 50 hours, output starts to diminish. According to John Hicks, a British economist, “It probably has never entered the heads of most employers… that hours could be shortened and output maintained”. Sure, there might be the occasional week where you need to burn the midnight oil to complete an important project, but on a long term basis if you are consistently working more than 50 hours per week, the research suggests you not actually being any more productive. Quality and efficiency of effort is obviously important. In spite of their economic woes, it seems the Greeks are some of the most hardworking people in the OECD, putting in more than 2,000 hours a year of work on average. Germans, on the other hand, are comparative slackers, working only 1,400 hours each year. But German worker productivity is about 70 percent higher. You see, productivity is about working smart, not working long.
Research also finds that the absence of a rest day from work once per week negatively impacts a person’s productivity, so make sure you take at least one day per week completely off work. This is hard for many of us to do in the modern era with 24/7 mobile communications (I personally struggle with this one), but do try. You might think you are being a hero putting in long hours, but in terms of measurable productivity you are probably kidding yourself. That extra time would be better spent investing in your personal renewal and close relationships. So switch off, go home, and get a life.
Don’t Let The Flu Get You! Can you afford your staff to be struck down by the flu? We talk to Jo Maxwell about the importance of workplace flu vaccinations. Influenza is a significant public health issue in New Zealand, yet many of us do nothing to protect ourselves against it, placing an immense strain on the workplace. The cost saving of vaccinating staff is easy to see when compared to the cost of lost time, revenue and productivity. Seeing first hand the negative impact influenza can have on a business when one, then another, and then another is away sick, saw Maxwell Health’s managing director and qualified nurse, Jo Maxwell become one of the first in New Zealand to be certified to carry out flu vaccinations in the workplace. And now, more than 15 years later, her team are recognised as being New Zealand’s number one workplace provider of flu vaccinations, responsible for delivering almost 22 percent of the total flu vaccinations given to Kiwi’s nationwide in 2014 - protecting over 30,000 New Zealanders. An impressive feat and a target they are set to break in the upcoming 2015 winter season. “The best time to be immunised is March/April, before the winter months hit and well before the flu is circulating,” shares Jo. “That time is now.” Whether it is their team of nurses being onsite, day or night, to vaccinate, or the supply of vouchers for staff to visit one of over a hundred nominated medical centres nationwide, their flexibility, professionalism and friendly staff are what set them apart. “It’s not rocket science,” laughs Jo, “immunising staff is cheaper than having them off work. We need to start being proactive to this health issue, not reactive.”

Why do customers leave you? By Eugene De Villiers
Client retention is incredibly important in any business, but sometimes we can be too distracted to notice dissatisfied customers. Eugene De Villiers looks at reasons why Kiwi businesses lose customers and how to turn this around.
Plumbing Roofing Solar Heating
How would your business look if 10 percent of your customers were planning to leave? Would you be surprised? Just like people, businesses can get caught up in the daily grind and not looking up. Customers are sensitive to this and quickly notice when the ball is starting to drop. The only sign of an unhappy customer is usually when they vote with their feet and leave. By this time, it’s too late. Customers leave for predominantly three main reasons: lack of service, non competitive pricing, or they don’t enjoy the experience of doing business with you. Of course there are times when a customer’s requirements don’t match your ability to meet their needs. The more honest you are with yourself and with your customers, the better you will be able to protect that relationship for the future. Don’t make the common mistake of trying to keep customers glued to your organisation when you can’t meet their needs. Customer retention and engagement are both critical to your bottom line. We all know that it’s far more expensive to acquire a new customer than it is to retain one (roughly 50 percent more). But there is another aspect; a happy customer becomes your advocate, or cheerleader. Word of mouth advertising is far more valuable than any advertisement because it holds much more credibility. If you’ve been losing clients, it may be time to take an honest look at your business: Look at the customer’s environment from an operational point of view and ask yourself; are we as efficient and effective as we can possibly be? Is it easy to do business with us? Do we have the right products at the right price? Focus on the customer experience. How do you engage with the customer and make their experience with you better than with anybody else? Once you are satisfied that you are offering customers something of real value to them,

then adopting the ‘net promoter’ strategy becomes commonsense. The way net promoters work is for you to identify and reach out to your happy customers and entice them to promote your brand to others. A way to turn all your customers into net promoters is to give something back, whether through a loyalty or an incentive programme. People like to feel valued, so they are not only coming to do business or shop with you, they are rewarded and are encouraged to tell others to do the same. Engaging a professional to design and manage your loyalty or incentive programme should be self funding, so the incremental business it generates will well and truly cover the cost of the programme. The rise of social media in recent years has put customer feedback on steroids. Customers who love your product or service can voice their views virally, so rewarding them is even more important. In the same way, negative perceptions of your brand can be more damaging than ever before. Incentivising your staff to live your brand values is not a luxury but a necessity. Many companies make the mistake of confusing a loyalty programme with a discount programme, when these two are

so very different. Take your coffee card, what recognition does this provide? None! It is simply a discount. Purchase 9 coffees and get the 10th free. Recently, when discussing this very concept with the owners of Urban Soul, they explained how they don’t provide a coffee discount card; instead, they invest a similar percentage of their coffee sales into supporting community initiatives with free meals to the elderly, the sick, coffee to the needy etc.

These things make a difference and an impact in their local community. Their clients love to hear about these and at times even meet the recipients. These types of engagement programs do make a difference - people love to be involved. This kind of customer engagement goes a long way to keeping customers coming back for more.

Plan B It’s not often we step back and think about the long term. The most you and I have done to contribute to saving the planet basically amounts to recycling. So when I heard about The B Team, founded by Sir Richard Branson and former chairman of Puma Jochen Zeitz, a group of global leaders who have come together to develop new business models that solve social issues and reverse the damage we’re doing to our planet, it certainly made me sit up and take notice. Kiwi entrepreneur, author, investor and The B Team’s Entrepreneur in Residence is no other than Derek Handley, whose story and insights makes the page stand out with all that he has achieved. Davina Richards talks to Derek Handley about The B Team and the advantages of being in New Zealand. 20 March 2015

Derek with his son, Finn at the Auckland Domain
News | Cover Story While most people delving into the world of business would never have dreamed that they would ever meet Richard Branson, for Derek it was a question of when, not if. So it’s as though he tempted fate when he began reading business books, including those penned by Richard, and started little businesses at school aged 14, to become a successful 36 year old entrepreneur working closely with The Virgin Group mogul. Derek, who was born in Hong Kong and attended Selwyn College, Victoria University in Wellington, Massey University and MIT’s Sloan School of Management, thought his “correct general direction” was in architecture. “It wasn’t architecture of buildings which drove me to go to architecture school, it was architecture of new ideas, new organisations, whatever that meant. And I knew I had to start as soon as I could which meant just taking a leap,” Derek says. His first business attempt was an online gambling site called Feverpitch when he was 22 and, like for many wannabe entrepreneurs before him, the game was over before it even began. “Something bad happened and it forced me to do it anyway,” he continues “which you’ll have to read the book to find out about it, it’s only on like page one.” He refers to his memoir Heart to Start which maps his entrepreneurial journey, and I can only assume he’s talking about the time when he was staring down the barrel of bankruptcy after a gamble on the share market. But the silver lining was his poor business decisions made way for a taste of real entrepreneurialism in 2001 when he cofounded global mobile marketing company The Hyperfactory. He cashed in and sold it to Meredith Corporation in 2010 and went on to invest in mobile advertising tech company Snakk Media. On the side Derek is an adjunct executive professor at AUT University, chair and cofounder of NZX-listed Snakk Media, a director at Sky Television, a New Zealand Arts Foundation Trustee, and an astronaut-in-waiting at Virgin Galactic. And to top it all off, let me catch my breath, he’s won several awards recognising his success in business including New Zealand Herald Business Leader of the Year, Ernst & Young New Zealand Young Entrepreneur of the Year, PWC Hi-Tech Young Achiever of the Year and named a New Zealand 2011 Leader by the Sir Peter Blake Trust.
Closing the gap To make any significant impact on the world is to work together and not against each other. So what better way than to place 16 global leaders who have the power and determination to make a difference in one room, and focus on creating a brighter future where the purpose of business is to be a driving force for social, environmental and economic benefit; this is what The B Team’s all about.
they were famous for what they stood for. Some were around corruption, some were on the environment, some were on health and wellbeing, like Arianna Huffington, and some like Richard Branson who are across the board; but in principle businesses need to do more, do better and redefine success in businesses. “What I learnt the most about The B Team is that they’re just human beings, most often trying to do the best they can not only for their lives, but also for the lives of others.” Last year The B Team spent time getting to know one another, their roles, what issues they want to address and what issues they would like to work on together. The next logical phase will be to look at how they can scale the movement. The organisation is still taking its baby steps, but Derek suggests that “it’s almost time” for The B Team to blossom. Tracking back, Derek recalls the moment when he met Richard Branson for the first time. The story goes that as soon as he sold The Hyperfactory he bought a ticket for Virgin Galactic – he is one of 700 people on the list and he’s somewhere in the middle – he went to a cocktail party in New Mexico in 2009 and, obviously, wanted to approach him to at least reach first name basis. He described himself as feeling immensely intimidated and “dysfunctional”.
“
I think we have a more reasonable appreciation for what life is about and what success should be and what the quality of life should be… I would much rather come from New Zealand than come from some of these other capitals where I think it’s a very 20th century definition of what success should be.
- Derek Handley so every interaction is based around human beings talking to each other. This again is another leveller because people use language and ego to try and put people in different places. You just have to be there with humility.” It was on October 31, 2014, that the Virgin Galactic spaceflight test vehicle crashed in the Mojave Desert, California, killing co-pilot Michael Alsbury, and leaving the pilot, Peter Siebold, seriously injured. When asked if the tragedy put him off the idea of going into space, Derek replied, “To try and create space travel available to the masses, humanity, it’s going to be difficult. The worst thing we can do is bail out because Virgin Galactic needs our faith and commitment as much as it ever has needed it. I think these things are really important and if it’s not people like Richard who are going to try and do it, it won’t happen.”
“A year or two later I met him at the rugby and in December that year went to Necker Island, which is his home and is where some of the Small fish, big pond galactic customers go twice a year. You spend a For many businesses turning ideas into action week there and get to understand what he’s like. is a common challenge, a challenge that Derek prefers to approach in a structured, “He’s a human being who totally integrates “Business has in the last decade been told health, enjoyment, fun, ideas and business. He’s detailed and well thought-out way, to not only that its role is just business. The job of the just a leveller. He levels everybody and you can’t help move things forward, but also to pat corporation is to maximise its shareholder down unnecessary stress. “The more ideas have any ego if you’re in a room with Richard wealth, at whatever the cost. They’ve actually created a bubble around themselves that that’s all the people they know, it’s all the things that they know and that’s the only conversations they know how to have.
“I think that by being in New Zealand you can look at things from different angles and the distance is useful at looking at what’s happening over there from a perspective that’s far and not in the midst of it. “I think we have a more reasonable appreciation for what life is about and what success should be and what the quality of life should be. And the things that the other cities and other communities have lost sight of. So for example, going back to New York again, the whole finance sector is totally oblivious to what it actually means to be happy and what the role of finance is in the world and the damage they have done in the last five to 10 years. I would much rather come from New Zealand than come from some of these other capitals where I think it’s a very 20th century definition of what success should be.” www.aucklandtoday.net.nz

Getting organised and stay organised By Davina Richards
We’re all guilty of consumerism. We love ‘stuff’ and can never seem to get enough of it. Stuff is the gift that keeps on giving! Except that it turns us into terrible hoarders and creates an unattractive swell of mess.
anything you don’t want, need or have a place for and only keep it if you use it regularly or can’t bear to part with. Simplify before you can begin to organise properly. If it helps, have a box or container labelled ‘maybe’ and put it into storage, if in six months or a year’s time you still haven’t used any of it, throw it out.
Back to basics
Organise your thoughts, ideas and eureka moments by jotting them all down on paper. A clear mind is a clear conscience – so when you feel it’s time to go back to those ideas in however many days, weeks or months, you Do you know where everything is? Do you know can refer back to it. Getting organised something satisfying about crossing things off applies to everything from work, life, to a hobby your list. or the kids. We’re not all perfect and some of us don’t aim to be, but we can all make an effort in our own little way.

Clean as you go
Being organised is a habit – so this means getting it together at home as well as the work place. It’s too easy to walk through the front door and drop the post, wallet/handbag, phone and car keys on the table or floor. Put it in its home immediately, don’t think about it just do it. Work in stages Don’t overwhelm yourself by organising everything all at once. This isn’t an all-you-caneat buffet where you force yourself to shove as
much food into your belly until you feel sick. Break it all down into sections and work your way through each area.
You’re organising is so bloody good that it should be added to your CV as a ‘skill’. That’s never going to happen. But what is going to happen is that you’re going to fine tune your habit until you’re an organising pro on steroids.

– both the ones at work and especially those at home. A little commitment from those around you can do wonders for your home, working life and mental strength. Be a good role model and show them how it’s done. Teach them to pick up after themselves and persist that it must be done as often as possible until it becomes normal routine. And remember to acknowledge the kids’ good behaviour.

Exchange goods
The cost of establishing a permanent retail location or office premises is pricey and can be a huge commitment to a new business. Rather than tying yourself down to an expensive commitment consider more affordable, flexible options such as working from home, small shopping mall kiosks or sharing office space with other SMEs.
Swap your product or service in exchange for another. It is a good way to get what you need without off loading any cash.

Money savers By Laura Baker
It has always been a lot easier to save a dollar than it is to make a dollar. So why not make a greater effort to hold onto your hard earned cash? As an entrepreneur money is always tight which is why it really pays to save. By incorporating saving techniques into the day to day running of your business you’ll find a few little savings can add up to a lot. Here’s 10 easy ways to save your business a buck.
Temp staff Temporary staff is the ideal solution for SMEs which have an unpredictable work flow.
Price hunting Shopping around for work purchases can really pay off, even on small items. Ask at least three suppliers to quote you in writing. If you quote a competitor’s lower price to a supplier they will often match it or beat that price.
Be your own courier Courier charges can add up, wipe the delivery cost by picking up items from suppliers yourself. Remember this will only save you money if you located close to your supplier or if you are passing by them on your way to another job.
Bulk buy Bulk buy wherever possible. Buying office supplies in large qualities is guaranteed to reduce the cost of the item. You could also consider teaming up with other businesses in your industry who need the same supplies to really take advantage of buying in bulk.

News | Trends
What’s hot in 2015 By Davina Richards
You’ve probably already looked back on 2014 and thought long and hard about which areas of your business need to be worked on. Since life’s one constant is change, we’ve cast a sideways glance into our crystal ball to see what trends are on the horizon. Social shifts are taking place and consumer behaviour is changing. So in 2015 we’ll be seeing acceleration in trends which already gained some traction last year.
The mobile takeover If your business is not up to date with mobile it will feel like you’re being shoved out of society. With more people owning smart phones or touch pads to access the online world, businesses need to take advantage of the rapidly growing active web audience.
Mobile-friendly content should be integrated into a business from the very beginning. Those in the know understand that if you have a website, you create a mobile version of it and design it specifically for smaller screens; this means compacting relevant information which can be easily navigated by the user. Information and measurement company nielsen. com has found that 1.9 million New Zealanders shop online – that’s 56 percent of the total population. According to localvox.com one half of all local searches are performed on mobile devices and 51 percent of consumers more likely to purchase from a mobile optimised site.
Content Info graphics have made headway and it looks as though it’s going to continue into 2015 and beyond. Www.jeffbullas.com says articles with images get 94 percent more total views. Businesses are exploring image-based content to provoke ideas and emotions around certain products or services to reinforce a sell. On another note, small businesses have done well in 2014 to use social media to connect with their customers in an engaging way, as well as communicating with other small businesses. SMEs are taking the time to give a shout out to other businesses on social media, website and blogs. Staying actively connected reminds customers you’re still here.
Sharing
Flexing freelance muscles
Whether it’s Snapchat, Instagram or Facebook, sharing content has never been so important, or easy. People are more than happy to click the “share” button if they deem content to be share-worthy. Not only is this a great way of marketing, but it also influences buying habits and drive sales.
Freelance job site Elance reports that in 2013 there was a 46 percent increase in the number of businesses hiring freelancers online. With a steadily increasing freelance workforce, flexible work will become favourable and businesses may struggle to keep hold of good employees. SMEs will have a competitive edge if operating with no physical address and outsource employees who work remotely.
Have you noticed how often you see a notification on Facebook telling you which friend has ‘liked’ or ‘shared’ content? Do you find yourself clicking on it? I certainly have. Sharing breeds awareness.
Crowdfunding
Traditional ways of marketing have become a thing of the past; social media platforms are where it’s at. Www.jeffbullas. com reports that more than 1.28 billion people and 30 million brands use Facebook each quarter. That’s a hell of a lot of people to engage.
There’s been a boom in crowdfunding in the last few years for small businesses and you can see why. Crowdfunding is the favoured alternative to traditional finance borrowing, i.e. from the bank and friends and family. SMEs now have a finance opportunity which keeps on giving (depending on how good you’re campaign is). Expect crowdfunding to get bigger in 2015.
Think beyond profit
The Cloud
Making a positive impact on the world is becoming a priority for many businesses that wish to make a profit alongside social and environmental responsibility. This has revealed that some people are happy to part with more of their money.
More businesses are choosing to use the Cloud for a range of benefits. Not only is it great for storing data in a safe and private way, but employers and employees can access business information from any device, anywhere, anytime.

Finance | Debtor Finance
Use your customers to fund your business growth – debtor financing explained One of the reasons businesses run out of cash – and generally go broke – is that they grow too fast. David Thorpe, executive officer of the Debtor and Invoice Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand, takes a look at how smart companies use their customers to fund their business growth. Debtor financing is particularly popular with small business owners as it allows them to sign new supply contracts without having to wait for the bank to agree to expand their overdraft funding option. Small businesses faced with cashflow difficulties no longer have to rely on standard bank loans, often required to be secured by real estate, to fund their growth, they have a range of options to meet their financial needs, one of those is debtor financing.
About debtor finance In the past there has been an element of confusion surrounding what debtor finance is and how it works. This confusion stems partly from the fact that debtor finance goes
by a number of names, including factoring, discounting, receivables finance, invoice financing, cashflow finance, the list goes on. All these terms are correct. Regardless of the name ascribed, debtor finance is a simple and straightforward finance facility. Factoring and Discounting are two options for businesses to improve their cashflow by accelerating the cash cycle. Both of these financial arrangements are primarily secured against the unpaid invoices of a supplier of goods or services. Under both facilities the supplier enters into an arrangement with a debtor finance provider and sells its unpaid invoices on an ongoing basis for access to cash within a few days instead of waiting the typical 30-60 days.
The benefits Many SMEs lament that they are profitable on paper but suffer from poor cashflow positions, which often stymies their growth aspirations. Debtor finance provides a solution to this problem. While it’s true that debtor finance is at times viewed as a tool to merely overcome short term cashflow constraints, there are a growing number of New Zealand businesses engaging it more strategically to grow their business.
The enhanced cashflow position of a company can be used to employ more staff, purchase additional stock, pay suppliers in return for an early payment discount, or to take advantage of new business acquisition opportunities.
Conversely, smaller organisations often prefer a Factoring arrangement as they are alleviated of the responsibility of managing receivables collections, allowing management to concentrate on other business functions.
How it works
One of the attractions of both Discounting and Factoring is that they are self-liquidating facilities, meaning that a business isn’t taking on additional debt per se, but rather accessing money that is already owed to it. The goods or services have already been provided, and while the facility needs to be repaid, this should take care of itself as a matter of course as the company’s debtors settle their invoices over time.
Factoring and Discounting are two options for businesses to improve their cashflow by accelerating the cash cycle. 1. Under a Factoring arrangement the provider additionally manages its client’s sales ledger and collection of accounts. Therefore, under a Factoring arrangement the debtor is aware of the arrangement and makes payments directly to the provider. 2. Under Discounting, which is an undisclosed facility, the debtor is unaware of the arrangement and makes payments to the client, as per usual, but as the debt is owned by the provider, the client manages the collection process and then passes the revenue collected to the provider. Generally, a Discounting arrangement would be utilised by larger businesses as they have in place the in-house resources to manage receivables collections and the reporting requirements of a provider.
In summary if your company is in a growth period and you are being restricted by cashflow shortfall, then perhaps a member of the DIFA will be able to partner you in your growth.

Looking to grow your business? The New Year provides businesses of all sizes the opportunity to assess ways to increase their rate of growth. Debtor financing is one of those opportunities.
2. Then the facility allows for immediate access to cash against a growing receivables ledger once a sale has been made / invoice issued. This speeds up the client’s access to cash so they can continue to fund the growth of their business – without additional security being provided.
1. An initial release of additional funds from the client’s receivables ledger that a client can use to pay pressing creditors (even the IRD), bring in additional stock for sale.
The business being relatively new had low equity. They were experiencing growing pains and slow cashflow, so found themselves getting behind with some key creditors.
Debtor financing provides two key benefits which most businesses are looking for.

Business development | Deloitte Fast 50
The Fast 50 There is no magic solution guaranteed to grow your SME and make it a success. But every year the Deloitte Fast 50 recognises thriving businesses that have found their own winning formula. The Fast 50 is an annual competition run by Deloitte which celebrates the fastest growing SMEs throughout the country. The event has been running in New Zealand for 14 years and has earned itself a prestigious name not just nationally, but globally. Auckland leader of Deloitte Private, Bill Hale says many businesses that are now common household names, such as Trade Me, initially entered the Fast 50 when they were just starting up and used the awards as a springboard. A diverse range of businesses enter the competition, including SMEs from the technology, construction, food, fashion and service industries. While all of the entrants come from very different background, Bill says they share similar traits. “The common link between entrants is their attitude. They often have a lot of energy and are very good at selling themselves. They are ambitious, driven and excited about growing their business; no matter what industry they are in they tend to have these common threads.”
Words of wisdom The top 50 businesses which make it to the finals are a wealth of knowledge Bill says and there are plenty of tips and tricks other SMEs can learn from them. He says the businesses demonstrate that it is key to have a really good business idea, a point of difference from your competitors and the skills to out perform them. “I think the reason these businesses are leading the way is because they understand what they do, their brand, their value proposition and they understand how to connect with their customers. Many of them are using technology to communicate with their customers and they have a big focus on customer experience.”
Inside insight The Fast 50 provides an insight into the New Zealand economy and shows some interesting trends. The 2014 Fast 50 was heavily Auckland

dominated with 30 of the top 50 businesses from Auckland. This trend was intensified in the top 10, with nine of 10 finalist based in Auckland. The growth percentage of all of the entrants also rapidly increased in 2014; making it significantly harder to make it into the top 50 than ever before. “I think that this shows us a couple of things. Firstly, small, niché businesses are doing the right thing and have successful growth plans. It also shows the strength of the New Zealand economy is driving a lot of growth through the SME sector. All in all I think it shows the economy is in a pretty good position around most of the country but particularly in Auckland,” Bill says.
The benchmark The Fast 50 has become a real benchmark and an aspiration for many New Zealand businesses. Each year, companies that make the final 50 are invited to attend the daylong Festival of Fast Growth at Villa Maria Winery in Auckland. The event offers a unique opportunity for fast growing SMEs to meet and network with other successful businesses and celebrate their achievements. The day ends with an awards presentation counting down the winners from 50 to one. “It’s an extremely positive programme because you get to connect with other fast growth businesses and there is no cost involved.” A lot of the top 50 finalist’s use the Fast 50 stamp to their advantage because it gives a lot of credibility with staff, investors, customers and suppliers. “When people are trying to win contracts, particularly overseas, they can use the power of the global Deloitte brand on their logo, emails and business cards which tends to open a few doors for them,” Bill says. Do you understand your numbers? It may be a cliché but it is indisputable - cash flow is the lifeblood of any business. It doesn’t matter how remarkable your product or service is or how much market hype and demand exists, if you don’t manage your business cash flow, the outcome can be terminal. What is cashflow?
Cash flow is the movement of cash in and out of a business over time and it is the ‘time’ element of cash flow that often causes the most problems. While, over a long period of time, cash inflow should exceed cash outflow, there may be specific points in time where money is tight and pressure comes on the cash reserves of the business. Take for example, a business that closes down for three weeks over the Christmas/New Year period. Employees need to be paid holiday pay during the shutdown period and overheads such as leases for premises, plant and equipment continue to be payable. Cash will normally continue to flow in while the business is closed 28 March 2015
www.aucklandtoday.net.nz
as customers who purchased on credit in the previous month(s) pay on the 20th of the month following purchase.
statements prepared for income tax purposes record the profit the business has made during the year.
The cash crunch will come in January and February when there is reduced inflow from customer accounts due to the lack of production or sales, and therefore invoicing, in December and January. Wages and overhead still need to be paid and, in addition, GST and provisional taxes are payable on the 15th of January, followed closely by PAYE on the 20th of January. It can be a stressful time of the year from a cash perspective.
Profit however is not necessarily a good indication of how healthy the cash flow of the business is. Businesses may be profitable yet still face cash flow difficulties. Profit doesn’t take into account elements such as capital expenditure which are often frequently required to keep plant and machinery up to date and efficient. Profit also:
Likewise, if your business is a seasonal business, with say peak sales in December for Christmas presents, or in spring and winter for the new season’s clothes. To have stock on hand to meet those seasonal peak sales you need to have produced or purchased stock in advance. This means that you have paid out money for stock but you have not yet received the cash in for sales.
Profit does not necessarily equal cash flow Most businesses visit their accountant at least once a year to have annual financial statements and income tax returns prepared. The financial
• Includes all sales revenue, irrespective of whether or not its been collected from your customers • Includes all expenses related to the accounting period, irrespective of whether or not they have been paid • Does not include all purchases as you may have paid for stock that has not yet been sold and so it isn’t included in your profit calculation. Businesses can therefore be fooled into thinking all is well because profit is high, only to find that customers haven’t been paying on time or they have a large cost tied up in stock – meaning cash is tight.
It is good practice for businesses to forecast the flow of cash on a monthly basis throughout the year (or in some cases weekly for say the next three months if cash is particularly tight) to pinpoint when the business expects to suffer low cash balances so proactive measures can be taken to build up cash reserves or ensure finance facilities will be available from its bank. AT
What is cash flow? Cash outflows • Paying the bills • Paying wages • Buying fixed assets • Meeting lease commitments • Paying interest • Paying taxes Cash inflows • Collecting money from customers • Obtaining loans from the bank • Receiving funds from owners • Receiving interest • The difference is net cash flow
Business development| Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment
An economic imperative Innovation is the catalyst to growth; it is about doing things better by creating solutions and knowledge that businesses can turn into successful new products and services. It is a major driver of sustained economic growth in New Zealand and as a small economy, distant from overseas markets and heavily reliant on a few key sectors, innovation is crucial.
The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) helps generate business innovation by supporting companies to innovate in ways that respond to market needs and opportunities and to see the value in innovation. MBIE works with a range of organisations across the innovation system including Unitec and AUT, as well as other universities, Crown Research Institutes and other government agencies.

new products and services faster, and to connect them to the skills, resources and funding they need from concept through to commercialisation.”
• Continue to ensure that regulatory settings are fit-for-purpose and engender business growth and entrepreneurship
Through its Business Growth Agenda the Government is focussed on seven key initiatives to build innovation:
• Continue to direct assistance to where it has the greatest benefit.
• Encouraging business innovation
So what does the state of New Zealand innovation today look like? Simon Rae, MBIE’s innovation policy manager says “This year’s [2014] TIN 100 report shows that there has been a 9.7 percent lift in research and development investment across the TIN 100 companies in the last year, which is hugely encouraging. However there is scope for New Zealand’s businesses to be investing more in innovation, and realising stronger gains from their efforts.”
“Callaghan Innovation has been in operation since February 2013 and is charged with working across the whole innovation system to accelerate the commercialisation of innovation by firms in New Zealand. The government provides $141.5 million annually in co-funding for Callaghan Innovation’s business R&D grants.
• Developing innovation infrastructure
“Significant progress has been made in rolling out a range of Callaghan Innovation services and support to encourage and support businesses to turn their ideas into

The Government is committed to creating the right business environment and incentives to encourage the business sector to double its expenditure on research and development, with a goal of lifting business R&D to one percent of GDP by 2018. Agribusiness | Forest Industry Contractors Association
Creating a culture of safety
Forestry is the most dangerous sector in which to work in New Zealand, with an injury rate double that of other sectors and a fatality rate fatality rate much higher than the average for all sectors. In 2013, after a year of numerous fatalities, the the Forest Industry Contractors Association (FICA), Forest Owners Association (FOA) and Farm Forestry Association (FFA) commissioned the Independent Forestry Safety Review. The final report was released in October and while still under scrutiny by the two sponsoring organisations, spokesman Bill McCallum says everyone accepts that safety needs to be given highest priority in the day-to-day operations of the industry. “It is unacceptable to have any forestry workers seriously injured and killed on the job. Everyone who works in our industry has the right and responsibility to return home safely at the end of the day. These decisions will need the involvement and support
of government, Worksafe NZ, training organisations, ACC, Federated Farmers and others. Forest safety involves many players outside the industry itself.”
marketer. Better leadership of health and safety initiatives is needed and a plan for change must be put in place.
FICA spokesperson, John Stulen says cultural change is needed across the industry. “As an industry champion that puts safety first, our initiatives have saved many lives. But what we haven’t achieved is a cultural change across the industry from ‘can do’ to ‘can do safely’. Making this cultural change is probably the most important message in the report.
• Lack of leadership to drive a safety culture
“Compliance needs to be rewarded and non-compliance penalised. Carrots and sticks if you will,” John adds. Safe working practices will now need to be agreed with contractors right along the supply chain and documented in contracts or by reference to the Approved Code of Practice and Best Practice Guidelines.
The three biggest issues were: • Gaps in the standards to ensure safe work and safe workplaces
The Forest Industry Contractors Association can be contacted via www.fica.org.nz — Advertising Feature
• Inadequate training and supervision of workers. • The review recommended: • Leadership and a Forestry Sector Health and Safety Action Plan • Develop a charter or pledge for industry leaders to commit to action for change • Develop leadership capabilities across the supply chain • Develop worker participation, engagement and representation frameworks
Once the findings have been discussed with all parties, decisions will be made about who takes responsibility for implementing the recommendations.
• Deliver clear and consistent standards to support safe work and safe workplaces
The report findings
• Develop an enhanced approach to workplace assessments and investigations
The report says that health and safety failures in forestry are not simply those of the worker, but of the crew boss, the forestry contractor and the forest owner, manager or

New Zealand’s engineering sector has a world-leading reputation. Every year for the past nine years, the industry has upheld its reputation by showcasing its many achievements at the New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards.
The 2014 NZEE Awards evening
2014 winners
The country’s premier engineering awards were launched in 2005 to recognise and celebrate the leadership, innovation and excellence in engineering projects, people and practice.
The 2014 NZEE Awards received 53 top class entries and with just 14 awards it was a tightly fought competition. Entrants came from a wide background of specialities from earthquake-resistant building design, sewerage, waste and water management, through to electricity supply and safety.
The awards have consistently attracted a high calibre of entrants from around the country, with categories that recognise people, projects, leadership, innovation, technology and entrepreneurship.
The overall supreme award was taken out by the large team behind the design and build of the Whangarei’s Te Matau a Pohe Bridge – New Zealand’s second-ever bridge with a lifting mid-section.
The creation of the bridge was a massive collective effort by McConnell Dowell Constructors Ltd, Transfield Services, Novare Design Ltd, Gaia Engineers Ltd, Knight Architects, Eadon Consulting, Northern Civil Consulting and the Whangarei District Council. The judges noted it was a well deserved accolade that they hope will inspire others to continue to integrate excellence in design with ingenuity. Property & Construction | Adroit Builders
Quality craftsmanship and clever design Adroit Builders can bring your tired old home back to life with a total renovation and repair. The Auckland company specialises in renovations and can help you get the most out of your existing home through creating more floor, wall and living space, warming up cold areas, updating your kitchen and bathroom, repairing any leaks and recladding, and adding extra space for your growing family.
While Adroit Builders also builds new homes, the company has chosen to specialise in midto-high-end renovations, which offer more challenges and allows the team to show off their high degree of skill.
Managing director Oscar Williams says Adroit Builders is currently completing an extensive renovation on a 1980s townhouse in Upland Road, Remuera.
One of the reasons for Adroit Builders’ success is the great dynamic between Oscar, who has a background in business and construction, and his business partner Matthew Hanna, a cabinet maker with a focus on attention to detail and quality.
“It started with an internal remodelling and it’s grown, because of the discovery of some fundamental rot problems, to a complete reclad. It’s now a pretty involved project.”

NZCS has made a huge contribution to the country’s construction industry, bringing together a wealth of expertise and experience during the past 50 years. It facilitates the sharing of industry knowledge, participates in the development of concrete and construction and provides a foundation for building valuable business networks, in New Zealand and overseas. NZCS is a learned society with a focus on technical excellence, offering seminars, technical publications and conferences for the betterment of the concrete and construction industry at large. Great returns on your investment Property investors looking for high quality rentals and great returns have a unique opportunity with Pacific Homes in Whangarei. Pacific Homes is a specialist house and land package building company offering brand new rental properties in a new subdivision in Kamo. Manager Mark Workman says the company is currently building homes within a large subdivision off Ridgeway Drive that includes 15 sections earmarked for rental properties.
With 200 sections in the subdivision, the rental properties will be scattered throughout the neighbourhood, ensuring they blend in well with surrounding homeowners.
“Any owners in Auckland can just call us if something needs fixing. Not having to have a property manager is a big saving,” Mark says. “We don’t charge a fee for finding a tenant and getting them in – it’s free of charge and part of our service.”
Pacific Homes is offering high quality rentals and great returns for investors
There is strong demand for rental properties in Whangarei, with an increasing number of Auckland investors realising the high returns and benefits of investing in the region, compared to Auckland, Mark says.
High quality homes Pacific Homes is a locally owned family business that has built more than 1,000 homes throughout Northland. It currently owns sections in a wide range of subdivisions, offering a great choice of location to customers. The company does not build to a set range of plans, but designs each home for its unique position, and is a licensed building practitioner that offers a code of compliance on every job. “We offer a turnkey package with guarantees and warrantees. We’re a design and build company and we design every plan with a fixed price contract, so there are no unexpected extra costs,” Mark says.
<
Pacific Homes offers a turnkey rental investor package which includes all requirements until your tenant is moved in, including design, construction, landscaping, curtains and flooring, finding a tenant and signing them up, and taking care of any ongoing property requirements.
<
“We have someone who paid $335,000 for a three bedroom, brand new brick and tile home and is getting $390 a week in rent for it,” he says. “The rental return on investment is over five percent. And because they’re new homes you’re getting all your new home warranties for 10 years.”
A beautiful home by Pacific Homes
“We do what we say for the price we say, and our pricing is excellent. We do everything ourselves and don’t use subcontractors, which gives us the ability to pass really good prices onto our customers. I can’t think of a time when we’ve been beaten on price.” AT

Property & Construction | Dean Steel
Small company with a big capacity Dean Steel was established in 2001 primarily to fabricate structural steel for larger construction companies building commercial buildings and multi-storey apartment and office buildings. Although originally servicing the commercial market, the company has recently manufactured a number of house beams for smaller builders and Placemakers as it looks to residential work to fill the void when commercial activity slows. Dean Steel mainly targets small to medium structural jobs around 30-50 tonnes.
<
These curved canopies were built by Dean Steel as part of a full structural package on the Takanini Village for Dominion Constructors
TAKE YOUR BUSINESS TO THE NEXT LEVEL
However it has provided all the structural steel for a 40 storey apartment building, and has recently completed Vert Apartments for Macrennie Construction, which was in excess of 100 tonnes. Dean Steel has also diversified into concrete form work, providing the form work for the Eden Park grandstand World Cup rebuild. It has also done a complicated tri-column structure for AUT in the centre of Auckland; both jobs for Dominion Constructors.
The company’s highly skilled workforce, including time-served tradesmen, allows it to take on the more complicated jobs that offer an opportunity to separate Deal Steel from other more production-based fabricators. Dean Steel has a well equipped workshop, which is small but productive. Its plant includes an automated beam line that cuts and drills beams, which allows it to eliminate human error in production of structural components. This is particularly useful when there is a high level of repetitive work, such as in a multi-storey carpark, where the company can compete with any of the larger fabricators. It also offers this beam cutting and drilling service to other fabricators, as the machine has capacity beyond Dean Steel’s requirements.

Property & Construction | Dean Steel Seismic strengthening Dean Steel’s capabilities stretch from multilevel structures to a single house beam, and from complex concrete form work to cast in plates and precast panel brackets. The company has a great network of suppliers and subcontractors who provide it with resources ranging from detailed drafting to sandblasting and painting to any specification. These relationships allow it to compete with other companies that may have these services in-house.
There is great potential in this area and the company has already undertaken the seismic strengthening of the Holy Trinity Cathedral and the Stanley Building in Papakura, both significant projects with considerable installation challenges that required thinking outside the square.

Dean Steel likes to take on the difficult jobs and employs a small, highly skilled workforce that enjoys challenges and satisfaction in achieving results beyond expectation. The company has worked hard during the years to offer a service that provides customers with confidence that it will deliver on time.

Crafted iron

Roll out the red carpet for Ironcraft which is celebrating its 45th anniversary. The milestone is a testament to its unwavering reputation as a successful and customer-orientated business delivering a wide range of products. Established in the 1960s, Ironcraft, originally known as Curtain Mesh Products (CMP), manufactures wrought iron, steel and stainless steel products in Auckland and continues to grow as a thriving New Zealand business.
Rising from the ashes
Local construction manufacturer, Thermakraft, hit the headlines last July when its factory went up in flames, threatening the future of the business. Not seven months later and the business has risen from the ashes, declaring itself match-fit for the biggest building boom in New Zealand for 40 years.
CEO David Williams admits the disaster rocked the business. Manufacturing ground to a halt, propelling customer service and sales teams into damage control, while their engineers had production lines to rebuild.
Ironcraft product brands include: Circa, Cottage, Forgecraft, Metallo, Palladio, Sound Creations and Bespoke.
Williams puts the remarkable comeback down to a mammoth team effort. “Everyone has pulled together in the most extraordinary way,” he says. “From day one, staff voluntarily arrived for the clean-up. We’ve seen a culture of resilience, passion and solidarity really come through.”
The company’s philosophy has always been to provide both quality and design excellence with every piece of furniture produced. The professional team of craftspeople take great care and meticulous attention to detail to the design and manufacture of furniture which oozes character and enhances your home. Keeping an eye on international trends means the company is always on top of its game and is enthusiastic about incorporating fresh ideas into new designs hot off the press. AT
Despite the fire, all Thermakraft staff have kept their jobs, a decision made by the board directly following the fire.

“We still remain grateful no one was hurt,” shares Williams, who took the helm just weeks prior to the incident. “Our next priority was to ensure there were no job losses which made staff loyalty even stronger. You don’t get a $27 million business back up-and-running in a few months without that,” he adds.
Innovation has also been the backbone of Thermakraft’s revival. New, bespoke machinery was urgently developed to meet the demands of more popular products, while engineering and technical teams worked with US and European manufacturers to complete the rebuild and take production capacity to the next level. “Innovation is at the heart of our business,” continues Williams. “We were the first in the country to introduce synthetic underlays, we work extensively with architects and the wider industry to perfect our products. So we already had a clear strategy and vision for the future. Plans were simply brought forward and executed in record time. In essence, we turned disaster into opportunity and triumphed in the face of adversity.” Williams believes the full impact of the building boom is yet to be felt. Thermakraft Christchurch is already in growth with the addition of new staff, but Auckland’s ongoing housing developments will see exponential industry growth not yet realised. “What’s exciting about that is, we are ready for increased demand. We are geared for growth. We will win back our market share and more again. We are at the brink of an outstanding period and are ready to take our business to the next level.” AT www.aucklandtoday.net.nz

Focus | New Zealand Bed Company
For a better night’s sleep New Zealand Bed Company has the perfect bed for every body and can even customise each side of the bed so everyone gets a good night’s sleep. NZ Beds is a family-owned company that has been manufacturing beds for more than 32 years. It produces the ultimate in comfort and quality and sells at factory direct prices. With branches in Auckland and Wellington, NZ
Beds supplies mattresses, bases and frames, waterbeds, adjustable beds and headboards. Sales manager Corne Lerm says NZ Beds has a standard range, but often custom designs beds for customers to suit their unique requirements. About 90 percent of its sales involve a combination of memory foam, latex and pocket-spring technology. “We use New Zealand-made memory foam products, which are designed to breathe better and don’t retain the heat like conventional memory foam,” Corne says. “Memory foam bedding offers better blood circulation and comfort. It produces less pressure on the body and reduces partner disturbance.” Memory foam is the modern ‘replacement’ of the water bed, as it offers a similar level of comfort. There is still a market for waterbeds
however, with NZ Beds being the only company to offer a range of soft-side and hard-side waterbeds. The company also manufactures latex and pocket spring beds, which are naturally hypoallergenic and great for people with asthma or hayfever. NZ Beds makes adjustable beds, with its Titanium bed being the latest innovation in comfort. It involves programmable wireless remote control, alarm clock and massage function, as well as a full range of head and foot positions. In addition, the company manufactures a range of box bases and headboards. NZ Beds gives a 10 year guarantee on all its products, with no weight limits on any of its beds.

NZ Beds’ Serenity mattress is believed to be the only one in New Zealand that allows couples to customise each side of the bed to match their personal comfort requirements. Initiatives | Universal Packaging
Universal Packaging -
Specialists in pallet wrapping solutions
“
Universal Packaging Limited sells pallet wrap and machinery, but what really makes this company stand out in the end-of-line packaging industry is its devotion to personalised customer care and optimised pallet wrapping.
Turner’s Panelbeating know the importance of standout customer service. But it doesn’t just talk about delivering unbeatable panelbeating and car painting services - it puts these words into action by integrating smart, customer focussed systems into every aspect of the job.
Evidence of the company’s emphasis on customer satisfaction is clear. It has new tidy loan vehicles available to customers, so when your car stops you don’t have to. Tyler says they are also the only business that he knows of who supplies photographs of the repair work. “A folder of photographs showing every step of the repair is presented to the customer to prove we did what we said we would,” he says. Plus it ensures every vehicle is washed before repairs are commenced, and groomed before it departs the premises. “We are very focussed on service, fast turnaround and training of staff; we don’t just repair cars, but supply fantastic service too.” Tyler is dedicated to his profession not only within his own company, but within the wider panel and paint industry. He is the Auckland Collision Repair Association chairman and is putting a strong focus on the association to encourage young people into the profession as apprentices.
“Two months into our nationwide tender with Universal Packaging we found we were using approximately 20 percent less machine wrap. I have no hesitation in recommending Universal Packaging to any prospective business that wishes to achieve significant savings in cost while still being supplied with high quality products.”
The New Zealand-wide company started out as a general packaging supplier, supplying a wide range of packaging goods to companies throughout the country. Today they lead the industry in specialised pallet wrapping.
Service that’s second to none
It is easy to see that Tyler Schwalger, owner and operator of Turner’s Panelbeating, puts a large amount of thought and effort into his company. It’s just one of the reasons why it was the winners of the 2012 Westpac Business Awards for Excellence in Information Management and a finalist at the MTA people’s choice Collision Repairer Awards in 2010.
