Personal Touch Curtain Lab Soft Furnishings come from a designer with a difference. W1 Magazine’s Arthur Browne met Paula Trovalusci to find out more about her passion.

T

here’s little doubt that when your business revolves around the finest bespoke curtains, blinds, cushions and accessories you gain a big advantage from loving what you do. That enthusiasm for one’s craft came shining through talking to Paula Trovalusci, who capitalised on her love for creativity by becoming a fully qualified Soft Furnishings Designer and turning her talents to her own company: Curtain Lab Soft Furnishings.

I wanted to get to the heart of what was different about Paula’s offering. She 8 W1-July2011.indd 8

summarised it as the personal touch: whereas many designers offer a service or a product in a style they like, she does the opposite by bringing to life a person’s true individual aesthetic style. It’s a philosophy which means she’s featured as a soft furnishings expert on Channel 4’s The Home Show.

She points out that many interior designers are too busy with their own visions to remember the client’s desired look for a room or space. Paula, by contrast, knows that the best soft furnishings are produced

when she advises and interacts with her client throughout the process. And what comes out of listening carefully to the customer? Paula puts it this way: “Others want to sell their styles; I focus on yours.”

And what she does with panache is soft furnishings. That covers furniture, accessories such as mirrors and anything to do with fabric. Taking the bedroom as an example, it’s not just the window area she can spruce up – Paula’s service spans loose covers, headboards, bed linen, ottomans, the bedspread, the cushions on the

Her influences are varied as she was born in Brazil and is married to an Italian.

The result is a taste which is broad and constantly open to ideas, with the expanded horizons that come with having done plenty of travelling. She revels in her varied experiences as a way of overcoming the more fussy and traditional ways of thinking about interior design. As for her favourite colours, it’s the lighter pastel ones because they are timeless, elegant and can be freshened up with just a few dashes of inspiration.

When asked about her two most formidable design challenges Paula explained they are bay windows and apex loft windows. The former because every bay window offers a million ways to dress it and the look must be right to be beautiful and bring the room together; the latter because apex loft windows are very shaped and therefore tricky to dress. She loves conquering that particular puzzle though, using techniques such as curtains which keep the shape of the window.

And her final message to customers?

Never be afraid to call in an expert. Interior and curtain designers aren’t as expensive as you’d think these days and it will save you money in the long run because it will cut out all the mistakes you’d make yourself. Paula will use her expertise to get you what you want and her network of contacts means she can offer a more competitive price for a range of interior design services.

When you’re out shopping and need to ask a member of staff for help how long would you consider too long to wait for the response? Most of us don’t like to be kept waiting at all and the same applies when we’re shopping online as well.

T

eIf you’re a retail surfer there will probably come a time where you need to ask the retailer a question to help you come to a decision about your purchase. But just like shopping offline, if you don’t get a relatively swift response you will probably look elsewhere.

In fact most of us have a 24 hour time limit for online responses from retailers after which point we switch off, according to research by data capture agency Lifestyles Online. The study asked 7637 consumers about their expectations on response rates to online enquiries and revealed that most

of us won’t be kept waiting.

While most high street shops would never keep customers waiting for more than a few minutes, its fairly common practice among online retailers to leave their customers hanging on for days sometimes. Many of us find this unacceptable and the results suggest businesses need to respond to online enquiries within at least 24 hours to retain their customers.

Those of us who enjoy shopping from the comfort of our living room sofa expect an even prompter response if making an online enquiry about a specific product or

request. As many as 84 per cent said they would like a reply within at least 24 hours, while only 16 per cent felt that a response after 24 hours was satisfactory.

However, online retailers should understand that getting back to customers within 24 hours is only a minimum requirement, as 36 per cent of us consider an answer within the hour timelier.

Co-founder and director of Lifestyles Online Craig Carr says: „A business wouldn’t survive very long if it ignored customers’ questions on the shop floor. The same is now true online, as this research proves. Online leads, whether gathered from your website or captured externally, have a real prospect behind them and need treating as such. In fact we encourage and facilitate real-time responses to all online requests.“ Online retailers should take heed, as many of us will look to a competitor if we don’t receive snappy service. The research shows that 42 per cent of us will start shopping elsewhere, normally a competing business, after just one hour, while 19 per cent of us will expect a reply within just 15 minutes.

While most of us would be frustrated at being kept longer than a day, the fatal mistake any online retailer can make is to not reply at all. Not surprisingly the survey reveals that if online queries are ignored, that normally signals the end of any further business from that customer. Internet retailers should take note, as 85 per cent of us say we would never return to a company that ignored our query.

Online Tutoring Educates Kids in Developing Countries EducateNcare is an online personal tutoring service with a social good twist. A portion of each tutoring session’s cost helps educate children in the developing world, applying a one-for-one-style donation model into an online service.

ducateNcare is an online personal tutoring service with a social good twist. A portion of each tutoring session’s cost helps educate children in the developing world, applying a one-forone-style donation model into an online service.

While this model has been used with consumer products before, what makes EducateNcare unique is that its “product” lives on the Internet.

A network of certified teachers and college students work with individual students in recorded online sessions, allowing students and parents to review the lessons afterward. Each tutor sets the rate for his services, sending 25% of the proceeds to EducateNcare. After the organization deducts the cost of operations, which vary depending on the tutor’s rate, the rest of the money goes toward the company’s Global Education Projects.

Note: There is some branding confusion on the website, as the organization is transitioning from using its original name EduCare into its domain name EducateNcare.

TOMS Shoes popularized the one-forone donation model by sending a pair of shoes to a child in the developing world for every pair purchased. We’ve seen other web-based organizations such as Sevenly incorporate the model into their business

operations. But does a service-based version have legs?

EducateNcare selects projects based on the likelihood of sustainability within the community. “Before we go into any of the projects, we have a meeting with the organization that’s going to monitor it,” says the EducateNcare founder Piyush Mangukiya. “We want to empower the local community to take care of the school.”

So far, EducateNcare has given more than 800 tutoring sessions in the U.S. and a matching 800 lessons for students in

developing countries. In one of its first projects, the organization funded the creation of a computer lab for a school in Gujarat, India.

EducateNcare is partnered with Pencils of Promise, an educational non-profit working in Laos, Nicaragua and Guatemala.

Adding funding to its Global Education Projects, EducateNcare launched two educational apps two months ago: SAT Math Study Guide and ShapePuzzle4Good. Half of the app’s sales help Pencils for Promise build a pre-school in Guatemala..

While many people daydream of holidays to exotic destinations, a new study has revealed that destinations in the UK are proving to be most popular with holidaymakers who are looking to book their main 2007 holiday online.

t also reveals that a staggering 17 million people expect to book some part of their main 2007 holiday online.

The study, Continental Research’s 2007 Holiday Online Planning Report , found that the UK was the most requested by the 20 million UK internet users who are planning their main 2007 holiday. The West Country, Scotland and Wales are expected to be the most popular regions in 2007.

For those going abroad, Spain has the greatest appeal, followed by the US, France, the Far East and the Caribbean.

Colin Shaddick, director of Continental Research, says, „It is not likely to be a price issue that attracts online holidaymakers to the UK, as internet users are more affluent and younger than the population as a whole. They, therefore, have greater opportunities to travel. „What is noticeable is the UK holiday market has improved considerably in recent years, with innovative boutique hotels, well reviewed restaurants and stunning scenery being some of the reasons why people are rediscovering the UK. What’s more, it’s all on our doorstep.“ For those favouring a holiday abroad, the appeal of sunshine and beaches was given as the main reason. A greater diversity of reasons was mentioned by those intending to holiday in the UK. Shaddick says, „Clearly the UK’s hit and miss weather drives many holidaymakers abroad. However, the UK does rate favourably as a main holiday destination for other reasons. In particular, the opportunity to visit friends and family, stay in a holiday home and enjoy the mountains and countryside as well as having things to do for the children. „This mix of reasons will help the UK appeal to a wider market and explains its growing popularity.“ Other findings of the report are that the short break market is estimated to grow even further in 2007, with more people than ever booking online. In 2007, city breaks and visiting friends and family are set to be the most anticipated short breaks online users plan to take. The UK has a strong market for short breaks, with just over half of all internet users planning one. London and Scotland are especially popular destinations. Luxury hotels around the country have also created an attractive market in the UK for short breaks.

ventually, he decides that the only way to find love is to leave and get a more glamourous job to impress potential love matches. In a desperate effort to stop their kind-hearted caretaker from deserting them, the animals decide to break their silence and reveal to him their big secret - they can talk.

Hapless but dedicated Griffin has never got over being dumped by his girlfriend Stephanie (Bibb) and when she comes back into his life after five years, he falls over himself trying to impress her. But while he’s busy doing that, he’s completely oblivious to the fact that his soul mate vet Kate (Dawson)- is working right alongside him at the zoo.

To stop Griffin from leaving and to help him see the obvious, the zoo animals band together to help his romantic pursuit by teaching him about the rules of love, as

seen from their point of view.

It’s all a bit formulaic, but the humour, while basic, works somehow. Adults will be entertained by the zoo animals being voiced by some very recognisable folks Cher as a lioness and Adam Sandler as a monkey, to name but a couple, while the kids will be impressed with the sheer novelty of, well, talking animals.

The answer to whether Zookeeper succeeds or fails, though, will fall firmly on the shoulders of James and his ability to make us sympathise with his character and root for him despite the glaringly obvious solutions in front of him. Thankfully, due in large part to the niche James has carved out for himself as a bit of an underdog, we do. It’s never going to win any awards, but it’s an entertaining and likeable summer family movie that will appeal to adults and kids alike.

Horrible Bosses

There’s an all-star cast out at play in this sharply funny, enjoyable comedy, but perhaps the most notable is Jennifer Aniston, who finally drops her good-girl image to play sexually voracious dentist Julia, just one of the three Horrible Bosses referred to in the film’s title. And clearly, she’s enjoying it - she should let the guard drop a bit more often.

he plot centres around best friends Nick (Bateman), Kurt (Sudeikis) and Dale (Day), all of whom have the misfortune to be saddled with awful bosses who make their lives a misery on a daily basis. As well as Julia, Kevin Spacey turns up as double-crossing nightmare Harken, while Colin Farrell puts in an almost unrecognisable performance as bald, overweight, drug-addled Pellitt.

Eventually, the daily grind gets too much for our three heroes, and they concoct a plot to murder their respective bosses, ably

assisted by ’murder consultant’ Motherf****r Jones, played with great coming timing by Jamie Foxx. But of course, nothing goes according to plan and hilarity ensues.

The funnies here work brilliantly thanks to great comic performances from a strong ensemble cast. As well as Aniston’s convincing departure from her normal image, Kevin Spacey turns in one of his best performances in recent years as Harken, and his sex-obsessed wife (Julie Bowen) is also very entertaining. Good support comes from Donald Sutherland in the form of Pellitt’s

boss, although he’s woefully underused in places.

Director Seth Gordon (The King Of Kong) maintains a good pace throughout, with the laughs being liberally peppered and well-spaced, but at times the script seems almost afraid to venture into any kind of depth: obvious gags are favoured at the expense of any darker black comedy, which is a bit of a shame. But despite it being a tad shallow and oddly prudish in places, it’s worth a look for the performances.

lectro-hypersensitivity, an unhealthy sensitivity to sources of electricity, was only recognised as a ’real’ condition by the Health Protection Agency as recently as 2005 and even now is not considered an acceptable diagnosis by the vast majority of health professionals, but for the sufferer living in a wireless world the condition is uncomfortable, debilitating and can even affect one’s ability to carry out everyday tasks.

Due to the scepticism surrounding the disorder little research has taken place in the UK and indeed research from other countries conflicts: some suggests just a few cases occur per million, others that

as much as 5% of the population suffer from the condition. With little information available on the subject and few specialists taking an interest, not to mention the similarities in symptoms between electrohypersensitivity and other illnesses and allergies it is difficult to diagnose and it appears that sufferers often approach their doctors with the suggestion after years of tests and appointments when they uncover the condition through internet research.

For the mango & lime salsa: ■ 2 medium or 1.5 large mangoes ■ Half a red chilli – de-seeded ■ 10g Red onion ■ 5g coriander ■ 4 Limes Very finely chop the coriander, red onion and chilli. Cube the mango into 1cm cubes and mix with the coriander, onion and chilli mix. Pour over the juice of 4 limes and mix well Allow to infuse.

Scallops: ■ Allow 10 Queen scallops per person

■ 40g unsalted butter ■ 2 limes ■ 10ml olive oil Heat the oil in a heavy based pan until it is smoking. Add the butter and the scallops and season. Cook the scallops very fast, turning continuously. Juice the 2 limes into the pan and drop the limes into the pan. Arrange the mango & lime salsa in a row. Dress with mixed leaves or micro leaves. Place the scallops on top and pour over the pan juices.

Pan fried fillet of sea bass

Cook off the cous cous and once fluffy add the shallot mix, finely chopped parsley and the juice of 1 lemon. Mix all together and allow to stand for 2 minutes to infuse

Reduce down. Sieve the mix to remove all the tough tomato pieces and place on the heat again. Add white wine. At the last minute add the capers and mix well Sea Bass 1 fillet of sea bass. Ask your fishmonger to fillet the sea bass if you are not confident filleting yourself. Score the skin this will help crisping. Season the fish. Pan fry in hot butter & olive oil for 1 minute on each side, until crisp Serve immediately. Arrange the cous cous in the centre of the plate and place sea bass on top. Use steamed seasonal vegetables and place around the sea bass. Pour around the tomato & caper sauce.
