avoiding the fashion faux-pas Being the mother of one half of a wedding party is a happy and emotional occasion, but it’s also one steeped in confusing fashion etiquette rules that can be easy to get wrong.

and on with your life Almost everyone has some sort of debt, whether it’s the mortgage, credit cards, an overdraft or loans. And whether it’s hundreds or thousands of pounds, finding yourself in debt is both frightening and overwhelming.

G

etting into debt is always easier than getting out.

Credit card companies and retailers encourage shoppers to take out cards with attractive sign-up benefits, and banks continually offer their customers loans - all involving repayment at a healthy annual percentage rate. Lenders have made it far too easy to get into trouble.

Depending on how deep in debt you are, you may feel like there is no light at the end of the tunnel but rest assured there is.

Many people ignore debts when they experience financial difficulty.

Some fear contacting their creditors.

They do not understand the consequences of not paying bills.

Ignoring debts will affect your credit rating. In addition, creditors may take action against you in an effort to get payment. Or your bill can be turned over to a debt collector, your property can be repossessed or you may be forced into bankruptcy.

If trying to get out of debt seems like trying to run a race while being tied to the starting line, and no matter how much energy you put into it you never seem to get anywhere, it’s time to get some serious help. The key to solving the

financial difficulty is communication.

If you follow these golden rules from the national debt line, you shouldn’t go far wrong.

Don’t ignore the problem: it won’t go away and the longer you leave it the worse it gets.

Don’t borrow money to pay off your debts without thinking carefully: get advice first as this kind of borrowing could lead to you

losing your home. If you have lost your job, or are off work because of illness, check whether your payments are covered by payment protection insurance.

Check you are claiming all the benefits and tax credits you can.

Get in touch with your creditors straight away and explain your difficulties.

Contact everyone you owe money to. If you make arrangements to pay some creditors but not others, you could run into difficulties again.

If the first person you speak to is unhelpful, ask to speak to someone more senior who may be able to agree to what you want.

Always attend court hearings and take a copy of your personal budget with you. Don’t think that going to the County Court makes you a criminal; it isn’t that type of court. You won’t go to prison and there’s no jury.

Always keep copies of any letters or court forms you send or receive.

When you’re out shopping and need to ask a member of staff for help how long would you consider too long to wait for the response?

M

ost of us don’t like to be kept waiting at all and the same applies when we’re shopping online as well.

If you’re a retail surfer there will probably come a time where you need to ask the retailer a question to help you come to a decision about your purchase. But just like shopping offline, if you don’t get a relatively swift response you will probably look elsewhere.

In fact most of us have a 24 hour time limit for online responses from retailers after which point we switch off, according to research by data capture agency Lifestyles Online.

The study asked 7637 consumers about their expectations on response rates to online enquiries and revealed that most of us won’t be kept waiting.

While most high street shops would never keep customers waiting for more than a few minutes, its fairly common practice among online retailers to leave their customers hanging on for

days sometimes. Many of us find this unacceptable and the results suggest businesses need to respond to online enquiries within at least 24 hours to retain their customers.

Those of us who enjoy shopping from the comfort of our living room sofa expect an even prompter response if making an online enquiry about a specific product or request. As many as 84 per cent said they would like a reply within at least 24 hours, while only 16 per cent felt that a response after 24 hours was satisfactory.

However, online retailers should understand that getting back to customers within 24 hours is only a minimum requirement, as 36 per cent of us consider an answer within the hour timelier.

Co-founder and director of Lifestyles Online Craig Carr says: „A business wouldn’t survive very long if it ignored customers’ questions on the shop floor. The same is now true online, as this research proves.

Online leads, whether gathered from your website or captured externally, have a real prospect behind them and need treating as such. In fact we encourage and facilitate real-time responses to all online requests.“ Online retailers should take heed, as many of us will look to a competitor if we don’t receive snappy service. The research shows that 42 per cent of us will start shopping elsewhere, normally a competing business, after just one hour, while 19 per cent of us will expect a reply within just 15 minutes.

While most of us would be frustrated at being kept longer than a day, the fatal mistake any online retailer can make is to not reply at all. Not surprisingly the survey reveals that if online queries are ignored, that normally signals the end of any further business from that customer. Taylor Wimpey brings in Phil Spencer to help first-time buyers Leading housebuilder Taylor Wimpey has joined forces with property guru and TV favourite Phil Spencer to produce the ultimate guide for those buying their first home.

T

he series of five new videos, presented by Phil, covers everything from knowing the right time to buy to financing your move and negotiating your way through the housebuying process.

The guides are being launched as new research from Taylor Wimpey* reveals that 6% of people in London are living with their parents more than a decade longer than they intended to as they struggle to get onto the property ladder.

More than eight out of 10 young people in London said they had less freedom living at home and 72% admitted it had an adverse affect on their love life. Almost seven out of 10 also felt that their relationship with their parents would be better if they moved out.

More than 70% of respondents said they enjoyed living at home with their parents, but one in 10 thought they could be in their late forties or early fifties before they were able to move out.

The survey of 1,000 would-be homeowners also found that although the Hotel of Mum and Dad may still be open for business, the Bank of Mum and Dad seems firmly shut.

Nearly 30% of parents in London said they simply didn’t have the spare funds to help their children with a deposit for a house, with one in eight admitting that they were struggling enough to keep themselves afloat. About 9% also felt that their children should be financially independent.

However, it seems that some first-time buyers in London are not helping themselves when it comes to getting on the property ladder. More than four out of 10 said they were not prepared to give up holidays while they saved for a deposit and more than half said they would not give up buying new clothes or eating out.

The survey did show that we are still a region that aspires to home ownership. More than two-thirds of people living with their parents in London said they believed property was still a good long term investment and, in terms of their priorities in life, more than a quarter of those surveyed put owning their own home above getting married, having children and a successful career.

Phil Spencer says the research highlights the challenges faced by those trying to get on the property ladder, but insists that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

He says: “Living with parents on a temporary basis can be a great way to relieve some financial pressure while saving for a deposit, but if you take your eye off the end goal, you could find yourself stuck there!

Sky Go to launch on Android Sky Go, the TV service available at no extra cost to Sky customers will be available to download from Android Market across a selection of handsets by the end of February.

ky TV customers will be able to access all five Sky Sports channels, ESPN, Sky News and 11 Sky Movies channels via the Sky Go app in line with their subscription on a selection of Android smartphones for the first time, starting with the most popular Samsung and HTC handsets.

In the next month Sky TV customers will also be able to enjoy their favourite Sky entertainment channels on Sky Go, significantly expanding the choice of TV on offer on the move, starting today with the addition of Sky Atlantic.

Know your online rights

With no queues, no crowds and no closing time, its easy to see whey so many of us choose to shop online, but while most of us know the high street procedure for faulty goods, refunds and other customer issues, knowing where you legally stand online can be confusing at best.

I

f you have ever felt that twinge of anxiety as you hit the OK tab to complete your online transaction, then this guide is for you. Consumer watchdog Which? has come up with the following guide to help you negotiate your way round the legal parameters of the internet high street.

Changing your mind - once an order is placed online, there is a cooling-off period starting the minute you place the order and ending seven working days from the day after receiving the goods,

during which time you are legally free to cancel. If you are buying a service, the seven working days starts the day after you place the order and if you agree that a service will start straight away you give up your right to cancel.

Items which can’t be returned include: CDs, DVDs or software if the seal on the wrapping is broken; perishable items; and tailor-made or personable goods.

Online protection - the retailer must give both a geographical

and an email contact address. If you receive an email confirming your order, you have a legally binding contract, but if it’s just an acknowledgment, then you don’t.

Faulty goods - whether purchased online or on the high street, the seller is still responsible for the condition of the goods on delivery and its also worth noting that the seller must also bear the cost of returning them if they are problematic.

Special offers - always check the terms and conditions, as some companies only accept the order when the goods are removed from the shelves and this may be after the offer expires. If you are charged full price, you don’t have to pay you can simply send the goods back with the delivery driver.

Auction sites - when buying goods privately there is little legal protection. The law on auction sites is unclear, but there is an argument that if you buy the goods from a trader it’s not a true auction, so you have protection under the Sale of Goods Act. To date, the law has not been tested enough for any hard and fast rules to have been set.

Senior lawyer at Which? Legal Service, Peter McCarthy, says: „It’s important to know exactly what your rights are before surfing the net for bargains.“ According to McCarthy, shopping from home can be extremely problematic if you are not familiar with internet etiquette. „Online shopping isn’t always a case of ’what you see is what you get’. As well as your statutory rights, it’s worth checking returns policies, as these do vary. For example, online electronics supplier Dabs gives 10 days to return unwanted goods, whereas Amazon is much more generous, with 30 days,“ he says. www.w1magazine.co.uk 17

Of all the joints in the body, knees cause the most aggravation for people over 50.

eight-bearing knee joints are often the first to show signs of osteoarthritis.

Rheumatologists have long debated whether rest is the best treatment for arthritic knees and whether physical activity contributes to the problem, but a new study suggests any exercise that is good for the heart is also good for knees.

A research team in Australia have analysed the knee joint in detail and have come to the conclusion that physical activity may actually protect the knee joint from osteoarthritis.

A total of 257 healthy adults aged between 50 and 70 with no history of osteoarthritis or knee injury were used in the study. Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) researchers were able to detect cartilage loss and early signs of osteoarthritis.

In the trials, subjects were put through physical exercise, varying 18

in intensity, frequency and duration, and the results were analysed over a four year period. It was found that vigorous physical activity - exercise that gets the heart pumping and the body sweating - was associated with an increase in cartilage volume.

THE AMOUNT OF PHYSICAL EXERCISE IS KEY TO PREVENTING OSTEOARTHRITIS „This is the first study to demonstrate a potentially beneficial effect of walking on the reduction in the risk of bone marrow lesions in the knee,“ says the study’s leading author, Dr Flavia M Cicuttini. „Bone marrow lesions have been associated with pain and radiograph-defined

progression of osteoarthritis, typetwo collagen degradation and loss of cartilage volume.“ The amount of physical exercise is key to preventing, rather than causing, osteoarthritis. Knee injuries are a well-known precursor to osteoarthritis, as illustrated in many professional athletes and sports people. However, the amount of physical activity that is ideal remains largely unclear. „Our data suggest that at least 20 minutes once a week of physical activity sufficient to result in sweating or some shortness of breath might be adequate. This is similar to the recommendations for cardiovascular health,“ Cicuttini advises.

The study also suggests that older people benefit enormously from regular physical activity, so instead of putting those old knees up to rest, the message is to get them mobile.

Semi-permanent make-up can be an option for a number of looks including enhancing brows, contouring and defining lips or adding a flattering infusion of rosiness to lips that are grey or have a lifeless appearance. It can even be used to successfully recreate the appearance of eyelashes - a godsend for anyone who has lost their own eyelashes through alopecia or cancer, or for burns patients.

Robson-Lawrence has trademarked a micro-pigmentation technique called Fame (Facial Aesthetic Micro Enhancement), which is ultra-delicate.

The clinic also has a technique that can be used for optical nipple and areola reconstruction in women who’ve had implants after partial or total mastectomies. Ten per cent of the cost of each reconstructive procedure is donated to Breast Cancer Care.

illing the gap between invasive cosmetic surgeries and overthe-counter beauty products is a range of non-invasive cosmetic surgeries that are easier on the pocket and far less painful. But a word of caution: before you take the plunge, remember that noninvasive cosmetic treatments should always be carried out by trained professionals.

The hyaluronic acid gel of Restylane closely resembles natural hyaluronic acid, helping to reduce the risk of an inflammatory reaction or other side effects.

The most popular treatment is Restylane Lipp, which is used to

fill out wrinkles and folds or to sculpt lips. The product is naturally degradable and it is estimated that it lasts six to 12 months before a new treatment is necessary. It is formulated to work in harmony with the natural anatomy of the lip.

imply put, pilates is a safe and effective approach to exercise for pregnant women to assist with breathing, body alignment and to recover body shape and tone after birth.

Pilates focuses on breathing, which promotes relaxation and helps activate the transversus abdominus (abs). This muscle is the deepest of the abdominal muscles and is responsible for supporting the lumbar spine and pelvic area at a time when ligaments are lax due to the natural hormone relaxin excreted by the body during the pregnancy and nursing stages.

Back pain is a common side effect of pregnancy. Unless the abdominal muscles, pelvis and spine are strengthened, problems with the back can occur. Strengthening the transversus abdominus through guided pilates movements will not only improve back pain and postural alignment, but could also aid women during labour for a much quicker and safer delivery.

The nature of movement in pilates exercise is low impact and allows pregnant women to exercise effectively without experiencing any undue stress on the now lax joints or an increased heart rate. Pilates also involves many stretching and toning exercises that help to maintain hip flexibility and stamina, which is essential for well-being

and preparation for childbirth. These exercises are aided and supported by pilates apparatuses such as the reformer (a moving carriage on a bed), the wunda chair with springs to create resistance, and the trapeze table to hang from. Pilates exercises also can be performed on a mat with small props such as pillows or cushions which support the head, the magic circle, foam rollers and therabands for extra resistance.

Most exercise modifications happen during the second and third trimester due to the ever-increasing belly. All pilates movements at this point are best done seated up right or side lying. However, you can work laying down as long as the head is elevated with pillows at 30 degrees above the heart for no longer than five minutes, turning to the side for a break. This ensures natural blood flow and oxygen to the baby.

Said pair, along with Maggie Smith and Judi Dench decide to up sticks and emigrate to the Marigold, expecting to find an Indian paradise akin to the ’palace’ described in the promotional material. This isn’t quite the case though, and while their new home isn’t a slum it falls

well short of the opulence they thought they were buying into.
