I love winter, with it’s cold brisk mornings, cashmere jumpers and great red wine. Wool is a winter saviour check out our favourite items on page 30. I always say people that wear wool never get sick in winter! We are also excited about our new feature, The Apartment that EYE built - turning an average apartment into an amazing abode! We have chosen International Acclaimed Interior Designer Mal Corboy to do this, who is featured on our cover in his favourite Strangely Normal shirt. We will be updating you each issue with the developments and the final outcome. On a more serious note, today it seems rare not to know of someone who has been affected by breast cancer. It is a leading health issue with approximately 1 in 8 women and 1 in 719 men being diagnosed with the disease by age 85. It is a frightening fact. On the 9th May this year 2017 we lost our wonderful writer Denise Tuson. She was a bubbly fun woman who loved living and loved life. She was young and her death seemed so unnecessary. If you can do one thing to help yourself: slow down. You are nothing without your health. Take time with your friends and family. Enjoy eating together, enjoy down time away from your phone and appreciate each day. I am trying to read more - from an actual book - and to write more. Reading and writing stimulate your brain in a different way. The relative slow nature of reading and writing by hand demands more from our brains, which leads to a better grasp of concepts, ways of applying theses, concepts and remembering the information. Essentially, it is exercise for your brain! Having spent the last 25 years on a computer, I now find my writing has become a display of hideous letters that few can read, hence my love affair with Mont Blanc. My new love, the Montblanc Muses ‘Poudré‘ fountain pen, takes its inspiration from 50’s fashion and the ‘New Look’: sloped shoulder line, ultra-thin waist, flared skirts and fresh tones inspired by flowers. This line is addressed to the women of today, with an elegant but fresh touch aiming to express a special character and a certain lifestyle. Our cover features 2016 Parnell Waiters’ Race winner, Loran Paulich and 2017 Lewisham Outstanding Waiter Award Winner Des Dillion, both professional waiters’ in Auckland. Waiters’ are often unappreciated and we love that the Lewisham awards recognise the best of the best chosen by their peers and the Parnell Waiters’ Race gives them an opportunity to show their skills off to everyone.

Ready, Set, Wait! NOVEMBER 12TH WILL SEE PARNELL’S FRASER PARK BE OVERTAKEN WITH WAITERS AND WAITRESSES AS THEY SWAP SERVING FOR SPRINTING IN THE HOPES OF BEING CROWNED AUCKLAND’S TOP WAITER.

T

he 2017 Parnell Waiters’ Race is a celebration of Auckland’s growing global food scene. Originating in Paris, waiters’ races are found in more than 53 countries all over the world. From Hong Kong to Washington DC, from Brussels to Jerusalem or from Buenos Aires to London, waiters take over the footpaths for a day to compete for the grand prize. This year, the grand prize is yet again up for grabs. One lucky winner will receive return flights to London in May 2018, a uniquely ‘London’ hospitality experience and automatic entrance into the National Waiters Race 2018 in London to represent New Zealand! The 2016 Waiters’ Race final, based on the traditional Parisian loaded waiter’s tray, was taken out by Loran Paulich of Paris Butter, who claimed the top prize. “Why did I enter? For a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon with waiters from all around Auckland, getting to know the competition and catching up with old friends, the prize obviously had a part to play in my decision to partake!” says Loran. Will Paris Butter reclaim their throne? Or will it be a Parnell local who takes out the prize? There’s only one way to find out - come on down to Fraser Park on Sunday 12th November for a fabulous day and celebrate the international nature of Auckland’s vibrant food scene. Enjoy the best of Auckland’s street food while you cheer on your favourite restaurants as they fight for bragging rights to take out the Parnell Waiters’ Race. With plenty of prizes, giveaways, food, and fun times for all involved, what are you waiting for?

the WORLD OF WAITERS FOR MANY OF US, DINING AT A RESTAURANT IS MORE THAN SIMPLY ABOUT THE FOOD. IT IS AN OVERALL EXPERIENCE, WHICH STARTS AND ENDS WITH THE SERVICE.

S

ome chefs have even argued that service trumps food when it comes to customer retention.Yet the profession of waitering is hardly ever celebrated. The waiters’ races were designed to change this. Waiters’ races or the ‘course des garçons de café’ can be traced back to the early 20th century Europe, with footage of races in Paris, London and Berlin. The races were started as a way to improve the recognition of the waiter profession in Paris. Nowadays, waiters’ races are found in 53 countries across the world, as people line the streets to cheer on their favorite restaurant. Last year, Auckland’s very own Parnell Waiters’ Race was taken out by Loran Paulich, of Paris Butter. "A waiter to me is almost like a social worker. What I do and what my goal is to make people happy and in return a happy customer is a happy Loran,” he says. “There is no better feeling for me then seeing somebody walk into the restaurant looking all sad and grumpy, but then completely changing their mood and creating memories for them. Then seeing them leave the place with a huge smile!" Loran is featured on our cover along with Des Dillon, of Soul Bar. Earlier this year, Des was crowned the Crombie Lockwood Outstanding Waiter at the 2017 Lewisham Awards. “I’m close on 42 years in hospitality - it keeps me fit at 60!” muses Des. “It’s clean yet demanding work, you spend so much time preparing and then the chaos begins. I have been privileged to meet a great number of wonderful people, whether it's a special occasion, business or casual. You get to be part of their food and wine experience - it really is quite special - and work with some amazing personalities.”

able Bay Vineyards has long been renowned as a go-to for good wine and food on Waiheke. Their first vineyard was planted in 1998 on the island, with the vision of handcrafting wines from the highest quality grapes in humble lot vineyards. Patrón Tequila: the luxury spirit taking the world by storm EVERYONE HAS A TEQUILA STORY. SLOWLY SIPPING A LUXURY SPIRIT ON THE ROCKS IS NOT OFTEN THE FIRST IMAGE THAT SPRINGS TO MIND.

P

atrón is working to change that. Creators of the 100% agave category, Patrón has been leading the way to transform the perception of tequila around the world and encourage consumers to be open to tasting the difference of Patrón. President and International and Global Chief Operating Officer Dave Wilson sat down with us to talk tequila & tonics, agave, and what makes Patrón, Patrón. What makes Patrón different to other tequila brands? I’ve been in the wine and spirits business my entire career - since 1979 and the last four years with Patrón. It’s a privately held company with an ownership that really values the employees, the culture and the product itself.

22

John Paul DeJoria is our owner and Ed Brown is our CEO and they truly treat the people who work at Patron so well, there are 1,700 employees in Mexico. Everything is simple if we’re going to do it, we’re going to do it the Patron way. It’s unusual to find this philosophy these days. This partly because it’s privately held and partly because he owns it. It’s all about quality, the Mexican environment. Many companies don’t value the countries they work in and we invest in water treatment facilities, education and that’s the Patrón way. I say I’ve got the best job in the industry - I really do believe that. Tequila has a certain association with it, especially in New Zealand. Images of shots with salt and lime come to mind! How do you change that image? It’s the biggest issue we’ve had to overcome. Everyone has a “tequila story” - and it’s usually not a good one! We’ve come across the same issue in the US, but most of these experiences are

“We often hear people say, I was always a gin & tonic drinker - now I’m a Patrón Silver & tonic drinker.”

Priscilla Southcombe

Titch Hay

derived from the cheaper categories. Patrón created the 100% agave category - it really is a beautiful spirit. The way we have to overcome it is through training and education, typically in small groups. Explaining to the consumer, the bartender, the difference between the 100% Agave category and the mixed category. And, of course, sampling. Once people have the chance to taste it then we win them over. We often hear people say, I was always a gin & tonic drinker - now I’m a Patrón Silver & tonic drinker. There’s no magic bullet, a lot of the times it is just training. We also have invested a lot into our digital platforms. Now, you can go online and find out how Patrón is made. Today’s consumer really values transparency - they want to know the story. Patrón is an easy story to tell and digital platforms allow us to tell it in a way that wasn’t possible 10 years ago.

To me, it’s the authenticity of the brand. I want them to know the backstory of how it’s produced - I believe it’s a really legitimate question to ask as many brands are just built upon their marketing. The quality of the product speaks for itself. Today’s consumer, whether they live in California or New Zealand, that should want to know. The other side of the brand is that are we good stewards with our people and with the environment? I think this is really important. So many companies talk the talk but don’t live it. We’re not just here to make a profit, we’re here to give back as well. If you see what Patrón has done in Mexico and throughout the company. We’re the largest employer in Atotonilco el Alto - we’ve changed that part of Mexico forever. We invest in orphanages, senior homes, and religion is so important there so we invested in rebuilding the cathedral. We don’t like making this part of our marketing - it’s just the right thing to do. What are your tips on the best way to drink Patrón? To me, there is nothing like experiencing Patrón Silver on the rocks. You really get a chance to taste the agave, and what makes Patrón unique. Silver, in particular, is an extremely mixable brand. Patrón & tonic is an extremely drinkable cocktail, especially with an orange slice. It is absolutely delicious! It’s really taking off in London - they refer to it as a “patronic”! We’d love for New Zealanders to approach Patrón with an open mind. Taste Patrón and we have no doubt we’ll convert you.

Mt Eden Jewellers IT IS NO SURPRISE THAT WAYNE JEFFERS – THE SOLE OWNER AND OPERATOR OF MT EDEN JEWELLERS – ENDED UP RUNNING HIS OWN DISTINGUISHED BUSINESS IN THE HEART OF AUCKLAND’S MT EDEN.

rom as far back as his school days in Napier, Jeffers has forever excelled in all things involving the artistic crafts. Boasting a high school portfolio of drawing, painting, sculpture and ceramics, he managed to secure his first role in the industry at the age of only 17, when he began an apprenticeship with a local jewellers – the very first position for which he had applied! Fast-forward to now, and Jeffers has been a manufacturing jeweller for 30 years. Moving to Auckland saw him work as head jeweller for both Howick Village Jewellers and Partridge Jewellers Queen Street, and briefly for Carats High Street. However, it was the part-time position with Mt Eden Jewellers that opened a whole new window of opportunity for Jeffers. After a dedicated ten years of working one day a week with – then owner – John Howell, Jeffers was handed the reins to the business by Howell on his own retirement. Whilst continuing to service Howell’s pre-existing customers, Jeffers has seen a significant growth each year in new clientele over the past seven years since becoming owner. His dedication to the craft has earned his jewellery a reputation of being both exquisitely and exceptionally well-made. The intimate means of craftsmanship in each piece of individual jewellery can be seen through the lens of Jeffers, who takes progressive photographs of his work as he forges it, using traditional goldsmith methods – starting from a block of gold. The precision and passion involved in the making of these pieces is today, a rarity, which sets Mt Eden Jewellers apart. As recently as November 2016, Jeffers relocated his business just five doors down from its original home on Mt Eden Road. Though the move was a small one, it gave Jeffers the chance to give his business a much-needed face-lift. Beautifully polished wooden floors and original brickwork walls compliment the space, and Jeffers onsite workshop allows guests to witness first-hand the raw craftsmanship and finesse of Jeffers in his element. Venture away from the norm and visit Mt Eden Jewellers for a personal treasure that will carry meaning and history from its start to finish.

W H AT DOES TH I S SHOE HAV E TO DO WI TH FUEL EFFICIENCY? When you look at designer footwear you can’t help but wonder how such a minimalist structure can hold the weight of a human. It’s with this in mind that Mazda went about building its cars using innovative SKYACTIV technologies. Incredibly, our new-generation vehicles are 8% lighter than their predecessors yet 30% more rigid thanks to extensive use of high tech plastics, aluminium and high-tensile lightweight steel. As a result, all Mazda vehicles* carry a 5-star crash-safety rating but still deliver a driving experience that is responsive, agile and with increased fuel efficiency. It’s another great example of what happens when imagination drives us.

Keep your EYE on... Who’s your fashion icon? I love Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw and off screen. Her style and elegance I admire.

TINA

Dream holiday destination? Oh that’s tough...I’ve been to 36 countries and I’ve always loved travelling off the beaten track. Top of the bucket list would be Timbuktu & the Sahara, but with safety concerns unlikely to happen anytime soon. Bora Bora is the next on the list and in the pipeline for early next year. I love diving so I’m looking forward to it.

KAPP-KAILEA

How do you like to unwind? Walking on the beach is top of the list. I also do karate, which is about the only thing that prevents my mind from wandering - if I don’t focus I get lost in kata or get hit. For something a bit less active...a long bath with essential oils, lots of candles and a good Pinot Noir.

W

hen it comes to edible art, Tina Kapp-Kailea is always one step ahead. Nothing quite epitomises celebration more so than a cake, and Tina’s cakes say what words cannot. Not one to settle for the latest trends, Tina is constantly designing and creating new, innovative cakes that push the envelope. All her pieces are an art form, as she brings a design to life for her highend clientele. Any exciting plans or the future? Yes, I’m adding a glamorous range of glazed donuts to my menu. They’ll come in perfect bite size for functions & events with luxurious toppings and can be colour-coordinated to suit a product or brand. Great as wedding favours, too with edible gold or silver leaf or instead of cupcakes for the reception. I have also teamed up with another business working on something real fun - watch this space!

Favourite perfume? ‘Au Belle d’Azzarro’ It’s been my signature fragrance for the last 25 years.

What’s your current addiction? Aurora Alchemy oil blends - so divine!

ur readers were given the chance to win a day out with three friends at the incredible Kauri Bay

Boomrock! One lucky winner took home this amazing prize which included golf, clay bird shooting, a decadent lunch for four and a $500 bar tab! On Valentine’s Day this year, Carena West was the lucky recipient of this prize. Congratulations on winning the Eye Magazine EZGO & Kauri Bay Boomrock competition! What was your reaction when you won? Carena West: I was so surprised! I had always wanted to go and check out Kauri Bay Boomrock so it was such an awesome competition to be lucky enough to win. Have you used an EZGO vehicle before? What do you think of them? I had never used one before but they are so much fun! Kauri Bay Boomrock was the perfect place to give them a good test run too. I need one for our farm!

EZGO & Kauri Bay Boomrock

THE SUMMER ISSUE OF EYE SAW AN EXCITING PROMOTION THANKS TO THE TEAM AT EZGO. Tell us about your day at Kauri Bay Boomrock. Three of my friends and I joined the EZGO team at Kauri Bay Boomrock at 10am for some friendly Claybird Shooting and Archery competition down in the bunkers. I can’t say that I’m great at either but It was a heck of a lot of fun! Luckily for me the EZGO team had one more member than mine, so we had Ollie from Boomrock on our side to make up the numbers which helped a little bit in the competition. Team West won the shooting and team EZGO won the archery competition. At approx 12.30 we headed up to the lodge for some champagne and 3 three course feast - my compliments to the chef, I’m not usually a big pork belly fan but his was faultless and absolutely delicious. After lunch we needed to break the tie from the earlier competitions so had a final game, Giant Jenga. This ended up being a hilariously competitive game eventually won by team EZGO (we let them have that one). What was the best part of your day? The day we went was actually my birthday so it was awesome to be able to have such a great group of people to celebrate it with. The group shooting

was my favourite and my team won that challenge (even though they had me on it!). It was so amazing to be able to celebrate my birthday in such style and with some awesome people, after coming second place at the inaugural EZGO Boomrock Challenge competition... I believe lunch is on me next year!

ADAM

STEVENSON RENOWNED MUSICIAN ADAM STEVENSON QUIT HIS DAY JOB IN MEDIA TO FREE UP TIME FOR FAMILY AND OTHER VENTURES, AMONG WHICH IS HIS BUSINESS OF PLAYING MUSIC FOR NEW ZEALAND’S ELITE. THE MUSICAL MAESTRO HIMSELF HAS SHARED WITH US HIS PAST, MUSES AND MEMORABLE STAGE ENCOUNTERS.

Please tell us about your background in music. Well when I was growing up, there were always guitars around the house and a piano to play. My mother was, among other things at the time, a music teacher, and got me into piano lessons at age five. At about eight, I picked up the guitar and taught myself to a certain point. From there I started playing music at local cafes around the age of 12. Music and playing for people has accompanied my life ever since – there wouldn’t have been more than a month go by over the past 20 years where I haven’t played some kind of public gig.

46

What’s your favourite style of music? I like so many different styles of music depending on the weather, the time of day, the mood. It could be classical, jazz, 60’s, or contemporary electro, with unprecedented accessibility and connectivity to new music, I’m always exploring. As a musician who performs for the elite, who are some of the more distinguished people you’ve played for? I am fortunate enough to play for great people and great companies. Rank Group, Russell McVeagh, ANZ, Barfoot & Thompson, Experience Group, Jucy Rentals, Pak ‘N Save, BNZ to name a few. One of the great things about this whole business is that I have never advertised. In fact I have made a point of not overly promoting myself. Instead, I’ve let word of mouth naturally filter through my target audience so the whole model becomes self-fulfilling and somewhat a natural qualifier. What is your most memorable gig? There have been a few that is for sure. We’ve played some very big gigs, such as the Barfoot & Thompson 90th Anniversary to over 3,000 guests at the ASB Showgrounds.

We created a full show with choreographed dancers and finished the gig with Peter Thompson coming up on stage and helping us sing ‘We Built This City” – it was a very special moment. Our band Whistlejacket has played at the Ohakune Mardi Gras to massive crowds at zero degrees, the coldest but most amazing experience. We have helped out where possible with charity events, one of the more special ones being the Starship Foundation’s 21st birthday where we played at a fundrasising ball at the Viaduct Events Centre. Playing music has created some of the most unique and special moments of my life. I’ve been invited to play on big boats, islands, in very grand and beautiful settings and have celebrated many important milestones with people. Music has connected me with wonderful people (if you’re reading this you’ll know who you are!). I am grateful for the longstanding relationships I have with the people I play music for. It’s a lot more like playing for friends and family than a ‘client function.’

character to try and over please people. My clients want to see a genuine person; it’s this kind of trust that I have established with the people I play for that builds loyalty. What are your goals going forward (next 5-10 years)? Moving forward, on the music side of life, I just want music to continue to deliver the rich experiences that I am already very grateful for. It is a beautiful thing when your passion can open doors and experiences for you. Our band Whistlejacket will be recording more music in 2017 and working on some live shows later in the year.

stevensonevents.co.nz

Who are your musical heroes/inspirations? I am a big fan of the Beatles, in particular John Lennon. In a way, I like to emulate their style, donning a suit but never losing the knack for bit of cheeky humour and not changing

Ten tips to meeting people without social media ONCE UPON A TIME, BEFORE THE DAWN OF THE INTERNET MEETING NEW PEOPLE MEANT LEAVING YOUR HOME AND PHYSICALLY INTERACTING WITH HUMANITY.

F

or some it’s odd to think that there was time where people would purposely leave the comfort of their homes to meet new people, especially now when the term, socialising, includes binge watching netflix while on Facebook

wondering if we should friend request our colleague instead of physically striking up a conversation. We won’t lie, social media is great but so is living a life outside of it and meeting new people, below are our ten top tips to meeting new people without social media!

1 2 Find your local bar that has a happy hour and good atmosphere.

4

Attend local group lessons that interest you, such as dance lessons, art lessons, poetry classes.

7

Attend a concert,

Go for a walk in a park with your dog or a friends dog, easy way to start a conversation.

5

8

10

and strike a conversation.

Do more things alone. Friend groups can be intimidating for others to approach you and you’re more likely to socialise with others when you’re alone.

48

6 9

Become a regular at your favourite gym class, be friendly compliment them on their technique afterwards, perhaps even ask them to show you how to do it.

If you take public transport, spot the regulars. Make an effort to sit next to them

music brings people together - introduce yourself other concert goers and enjoy those beats together!

3

Be your friends plus one to their “other” friend group hang outs - they’re bound to share similar interests.

Late night Shisha bar’s are a relaxed environment that attracts all sorts - we wouldn’t share mouthpieces though.

Have a BBQ with your neighbours, after introducing yourself to them invite them over to have a BBQ - if have no BBQ invite them for a dinner party.

Dogs don’t belong in cars DON’T LEAVE YOUR DOG IN YOUR CAR! IT’S IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT BEING ENCLOSED IN A SMALL, UNFAMILIAR ENVIRONMENT CAN BE STRESSFUL, LEADING TO HYPERVENTILATION, HEATSTROKE AND MOST COMMONLY, SUFFOCATION.

I

t’s winter, my dog will be fine right? Nope! It’s common knowledge that dogs should never be left in a car during the summer, however, winter can be just as bad. Being locked in a car during winter, exposes your dog to the risk of hypothermia and in sub-

zero temperature’s, freeze any water left in the car, resulting in dehydration. When parked in conservatories, greenhouses or small buildings with a large number of glass windows, there’s also risks exposing your dog to the excessive consumption of carbon

dioxide, depriving them of oxygen. Treat man’s best friend, as your best friend and leave them at home or in an environment where they can run around because there’s no time any dog should be left in a car.

CHRISTCHURCH The humble beginnings of Otautahi starts in Christchurch where the shop and the artists started to gain national and international recognition But all that came crashing down when tragically we lost our shop in the 2011 earthquake. Only three years after the earthquake we reopened the doors to our Christchurch Tattoo Studio, moving location to Riccarton Rd. The setup is fresh and unique with a wide open plan layout, six stations and various tattoo artists, both national and international, specialising in their own unique flavors and styles.

QUEENSTOWN The Queenstown branch of Otautahi is located directly across from the station building, with perfect access to many of the city’s various action adventure sports pickup and drop off points, along with the tour buses. The studio operates with six stations in house and a minimum of three artists, both local and international, in store every day. These artists are all specialising in their own areas of expertise, some with several such areas of passion.

Stress

NOBODY LIKES BEING STRESSED, IT CAN CAUSE IRRATIONAL DECISIONS, HEIGHTENED BLOOD LEVELS, EXCESSIVE CONSUMPTION OF FOOD AND SOMETIMES AN ANXIETY ATTACK.

owever reaching for food when we’re stressed is our bodies attempt at combating stress to reduce our heightened blood pressure. Stress eating is normal but some foods, such as processed foods or caffeine spike your blood levels, and can increase stress. When you’re stressed try consuming natural stress reducers such as the foods listed below. Avocado - rich in B vitamins for healthy nerves and brain cells, and also high in monounsaturated fat and potassium which decreases blood pressure. Blueberries - rich in vitamin C and antioxidants to help repair and protect cells. Almonds - Rich in vitamins B2 and E. Both of these nutrients boosts the immune system Oranges - Rich in Vitamin C, known to lower blood pressure and the stress hormone cortisol. Salmon - Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, helping to keep cortisol and adrenaline from spiking when tense. Keep these foods in your diet and remember to take two; that means stepping back from your stressful environment and take two minutes to breathe, collect and calm yourself.

MR. OPINIONATOR

THE MOTHERIN-LAW DIED A LITTLE WHILE BACK.

F

rom the “Herald”: “Act Party leader David Seymour says he believes he has the numbers to at least get his voluntary euthanasia bill past the first hurdle. Speaking after his private member's bill was pulled from the ballot today, Seymour said 40 MPs had indicated they would support it, while 27 said they would oppose it. Another 50 had said they were undecided.” And this, from a different edition: ‘Speaking to reporters after the caucus meeting, English told reporters he was an "active Catholic and proud of it". But while his Catholic faith was an important influence, it did not define him, he said.

70

He said his opposition to euthanasia and abortion remained the same. But his position on gay marriage had changed. "I'd probably vote differently now on the gay marriage issue. I don't think that gay marriage is a threat to anyone else's marriage."’ This article isn’t about marriage equality but, before moving on, I have to note that our Prime Minister appears to have voted against marriage equality because it was a threat to “anyone else’s marriage.” This is the problem with young William: he just isn’t any good at fibbing. John Boy, of course, was a master craftsman at fibs, evasion and memory losses yet I, for one, continued to vote for him. The sad fact is that Billy Boy is a bad fibber and voted against marriage equality because he believes that there is a loving and omniscient God who directs, via good old Leviticus: If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. By the by, while wandering through Leviticus, I thought you should be warned that there are a number of offences, the penalty for which is death and having a bit of blood on you. For example, I’d be a bit careful around the parents: For every one that curseth his father or his mother shall be surely put to death: he hath cursed his father

or his mother; his blood shall be upon him. A menage à trois with Mumsy and daughter – oops: And if a man take a wife and her mother, it is wickedness: they shall be burnt with fire, both he and they; that there be no wickedness among you. Childlessness awaits he who bonks his uncle’s wife (or his brother’s wife): And if a man shall lie with his uncle's wife, he hath uncovered his uncle's nakedness: they shall bear their sin; they shall die childless. There is some good news: you only get exiled "if a man shall lie with a woman having her sickness." Back to my mother-in-law. She was an exceptional woman: a theatre nurse, a flight hostie on TEAL’s flying boats, AREINZ, Social Welfare Director, artist … . She had her peccadillos: a bit nuts over animals – various attempts to steal the neighbours’ chickens by feeding them a metre a day closer to our place, for example – but she had a sharp brain. Then, she started getting forgetful and, in the space of 6 months, went from forgetful to a serious bout of dementia. In the end, she’d be screaming if she were left alone. My father-in-law wasted away looking after her because we had this family obligation to keep her with us. There’d be episodes of getting out of bed, getting into bed, out of bed, into bed, out of bed … . Taking her clothes off; putting her clothes on – clothes on, clothes off. Screaming, not screaming … In the end, though, my bride and her father just couldn’t cope,

with all the will in the world, and she was hospitalised, followed by dementia care in a rest home. The point of all this is that there is this rump of baby boomers, just about to launch into the dementia zone and the story of my mother-in-law will be played and replayed in thousands of families. The emotional cost is severe. The physical cost is severe; fortunately, we saved the father-in-law because Nana’s departure for hospital allowed him to get some rest and to eat regularly but most European families don’t have two generations in the one house; pity the remaining spouse. The financial cost is ruinous. It was about $5,000 a month to have Nana in the rest home. Now, that $5,000 comes out of a family’s finances or out of the tax take but, wherever it comes from, it’s a total waste of money. In the rest home, Nana had no quality of life and it was scary to see all the others there in a similar state. One man, across the corridor, kept on calling visitors (not his) into his room and asking them to go and find his wife. Another man kept on crying out: “Joyce”, “Joyce”. $5,000 a month to have your loved one stare at the ceiling, regardless of whether you were visiting. These people are as broken as people can be, yet they have to live on as nothing more than shadows, at enormous expense. When I addressed the Select Committee on assisted death, my submission said:

Mental incompetency – my views on a definition: A. While mentally competent, I want to be able to define situations whereupon my life should be terminated or allowed to come to an end. B. In the situation where I am apparently functioning physically but I am demented, there would be a simple test: do I recognise my children? If I do not, I do not want to live. I accept that there are likely to be more technical ways of defining the requisite level of dementia for the purposes of an exit; I have proffered this definition simply to show the nature of the situation which I fear. C. If I am in a persistent vegetative state with no reasonable prospect of an imminent escape, I want to be able to provide that my life should be terminated or allowed to come to an end where two doctors diagnose persistent vegetative state with no reasonable prospect of regaining consciousness within the next 6 months. What has Bill’s God got to do with me and my desire not to be a vegetable?

“Let it be” sofa by Poltrona Frau The “Let it Be” sofa has an intention implicit in its name – a famous song by The Beatles that is evocative of a period of newfound freedom from traditional formality and convention. This Ludovica + Roberto Palomba project also reinterprets the ancient Italian concept of the Roman triclinium, where people lay down, ate, talked and lazed about.

The “Let it Be” is an invitation to relax in your own prefered style – its modularity can be completed according to taste with Potrona Frau saddle leather backrests, armrests, shelves and storage units combined with soft down cushions that appear to be suspended on the saddle leather straps. The stitching details are reminiscent of fine saddles and harnesses. Letting it be has never been so easy or so comfortable

On the 1st November, the renowned Langham Auckland will see itself rebranded as Cordis, Auckland. The hotel will be joining the existing range of Cordis Hotels and Resorts – a new generation of modern upscale hotels by Langham Hospitality Group – though excitingly, it will be the very first of its kind in the Pacific region. As of early July, the hotel will begin its transition, with refurbishments being made to all 411 rooms and suites, lobby lounge and the exclusive club lounge, all this is in addition to the recently renovated banquet venues. Each Cordis hotel is individual in style, architecture and design, reflective to its location and surrounding culture. Cordis Auckland will be no exception to this, with award-winning and New Zealand based design firm – Space Studio – appointed as interior designer for the project. Franz Mascarenhas –managing director of The Langham, Auckland – is confident that “Cordis, Auckland will succeed and continue to be the social centre of Auckland, hosting major events, conferences, international delegations and the city’s most glamorous weddings.” With much anticipation, the changes are expected to be completed by February 2018. cordishotels.com/en/auckland/

One of us is lying Five students go to detention. Only four leave alive. For fans of Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars, this is the perfect high-school whodunit. On Thursday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention. Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule. Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess. Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing. Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher. And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High's notorious gossip app. Only, Simon never makes it out of that classroom. Before the end of detention, Simon's dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn't an accident. On Thursday, he died. But on Friday, he'd planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder. Or are they just the perfect patsies for a killer who's still on the loose? Everyone has secrets, right? What really matters is how far you would go to protect them. $21.00 10

Earthwood MARK BIGGELAAR HAS 45 YEARS EXPERIENCE IN FURNITURE RESTORATION AND WOOD-SURFACE FINISHING. HE FOUNDED EARTHWOOD LTD IN 1991.

T

oday his expertise as a wooden furniture restoration specialist is widely respected. He works with anything from daily dining tables and nightly bedroom suites to antiques (his favourite), musical instruments, and almost any other imaginable wooden object, including kitchen furniture, large commercial projects, and colour-matching. Many years behind a spray-gun in a purpose-built booth have made Mark a ‘gun’ with the gun. They’ve also made him a master of coating technologies and their applications, from oldfashioned French Polishing through

“A master of coating technologies and their applications, from old-fashioned French Polishing through to modern resistant surfaces such as liquid glass.” to modern resistant surfaces such as liquid glass. At fifteen Mark joined his father’s furniture making business, NZ Woodcreations Ltd. At that stage Woodcreations employed ten people and was growing into the 53% export manufacturer it became. Mark learnt all aspects of surface-finishing and manufacturing of wooden furniture, and today even hopelessly broken or damaged pieces leave Earthwood’s hands seamlessly restored or refinished. Repair sites are almost impossible to distinguish, if they’re visible at all. Mark’s expertise is sought-after all over Auckland district. Quoting is most often done from photographs. Most useful are close-ups of specific damage, plus wider shots of the entire piece from different angles to give an

idea of the size of the piece and extent of the damage. A twice-weekly pick-up and delivery service makes life simple for clients. Earthwood caters for the discerning who prefer to restore, recycle, revive, and reveal.

Skysolar THE SUN IS OUR LARGEST AND MOST ABUNDANT SOURCE OF FREE ENERGY, AND SKYSOLAR HAVE BEEN HARNESSING THAT ENERGY INTO NEW ZEALAND HOMES SINCE 2013.

T

he kiwi owned and operated company acts on the firm belief that solar power is the way forward, creating zero emission energy to power your home and ensuring the preservation of New Zealand’s wonderful natural environment for future generations to come. Starting out on Auckland’s North Shore, after four years operating SkySolar is now available nationwide. The team is made up of highly trained and trustworthy professionals spread across a wide range of regions throughout the North and South Islands. Solar installations are different for every household, and the team at SkySolar provide a full service from sales, to design, to install – all to best suit the individual. The benefits of powering your home with solar energy are endless. With zero emission energy, solar panels are not only beneficial for the environment around us, they also provide an

economically friendly solution to cutting energy costs and better managing your power consumption. SkySolar also specialises in larger commercial installations customised to suit your business, meaning you can generate enough power from free zero-emission solar energy to power your entire establishment. By adding solar panels to your home or business, the energy radiated by the sun can be directly absorbed from your roof or building – even on cloudy days. This being your primary energy source, any extra power required will then come from the grid. Correspondingly when you have an excess of energy this power does not go to waste, and is instead exported to the grid resulting in a more pleasant monthly power bill. Additionally, SkySolar offers solar panel options for off-grid locations, allowing you access to renewable power in the remotest of locations. The off-grid options are also a popular eco-conscious solution for regular

With SkySolar customers can take power into their own hands, managing and maintaining better use of energy. You can still make the most of the sun this winter, by shifting to a renewable source of energy, which benefits both your electricity expenditure as well as the environment which surrounds us.

THE APARTMENT THAT EYE ALTERED

The Apartment that Eye Altered

Cabinetry - Laminex Finished Timber Veneer Messina Rigato and Melteca Purecoat Ink Black

OUR APARTMENT RENOVATION IS UNDERWAY! HAVE YOU CONSIDERED THE ADVANTAGES OF APARTMENT LIVING? IT CAN BE AWESOME WHEN THE SPACE CHALLENGE IS OVERCOME AND WHEN YOU KNOW HOW TO ACCOMMODATE ALL YOUR MUCH LOVED PIECES IN THOSE SMALL SPACES TO THE BEST ADVANTAGE.

T

here are plenty of interior design ideas and advice available to research and customise for your particular possessions and tastes, so it may take a bit of researching and pondering to get it right but will be so worth it! Take one thing at a time, and with good research and advice you will be amazed at what you achieve! Keep to Monotone: To get you started to create the illusion of space, monotone often does the trick. By keeping your furniture the same colour as the rest of the room ,

32

especially the wall behind can make the furniture appear like inobtrusive built-ins — or even like they’re not there at all. Even bulky pieces like consoles, armoires, and bookcases, when painted the same color as the wall behind, can suddenly seem like like they become part of the space itself. The effect can be very calming, and unifying. Laminex New Zealand For our kitchen, Laminex New Zealand will be supplying the Caesarstone for the benchtop and Laminex Finished Timber Veneer for the cabinetry. Caesarstone is made from up to 93%

quartz, therefore combining the beauty and strength of quartz with the cool, tactile qualities of natural stone. The key difference is that Caesarstone is non-porous and is therefore resistant to stains and is easy to clean. With traditional quartz designs available through to designs inspired by some of the world’s most beautiful natural marble there is a wide selection for a number of tastes. The range of Laminex finished timber veneer panels offers a pre-finished veneer solution which provides a more durable and scratch resistant surface in comparison to traditional lacquered veneer. We like the sophistication and easy alternative to solid wood and that they are carefully crafted to ensure quality and consistency. Incidentally, another favourable aspect of Laminex New Zealand is that they strongly believe in the importance of supporting sustainable building practices to reduce the carbon footprint and deliver environmentally preferable product wherever possible.

Paterson Patersons will be providing all the bathroom basins, toilets, bath, and showers, heated towel rails, fittings and accessories (which include the tall basin mixers, frosted black glass soap dispensers, and frosted black glass brush sets) and they have proposed a Vanita and Casa Satellite blue tooth mirror in the upstairs bathroom and a Vanita and Casa Rigel mirror cabinet in the downstairs bathroom. There is a S/S brass kitchen sink ordered and S/S brass taps and fittings, which have an opulent, shiny gold look. The Kitchen Clinches It! If you can renovate try and get an amazing kitchen! The rest of the house revolves around the kitchen and even more so when the cooks amongst us are in action. You will see some amazing ideas in our renovation as it progresses 34

but here are some suggestions for you to consider: • Make sure your pantry is a good size and well lit. • Install kitchen sink drawers that tip out. • Keep an over-the-sink cutting board handy to temporarily expand your counter space. • Maximize your under-sink storage space with a pocket organizer (you could even use an over the door shoe organizer for this and cut to shape. • Make the under-cabinet vertical space work for you with the help of Command hooks and small baskets. • Consider rolling cabinet storage. • Or, invest in a Lazy Susan cabinet to make all of that awkward corner space more accessible. • Put shelves on top of your shelves in pantry. • Or shelves underneath your shelves. • Use pan dividors to divide your pans and make them more accessible • Tray racks are awesome to keep your trays upright and easy to find. • Skip the counter-hogging knife block in favor of a magnetic knife strip, especially if counter space (and drawer space) comes at a premium. • Line the area right underneath the ceiling with shelves, especially if your

Blum

cabinets don’t reach all the way up. • Hang pots and pans spomewhere up high (But if you like the simplistic look you won’t want saucepans, utensils and appliances cluttering up the vista, so will need to have good storage solutions for all these items. • Keep uncovered shelf space looking uncluttered with baskets. • The insides of cabinets are also great places to put hooks for wipes, gloves, and pot holders. • Pull out vertical cupboards for rubbish bins. Invest in pieces with hidden storage Open floor plans allow for all kinds of multifunctional furnishings, particularly ones that can double as storage hubs. Invest in chairs, ottomans, and even coffee tables with hidden storage room and stash your necessities in privacy and style. But remember a limited materials palette encourages flow throughout the home. Whether it’s a chic closed cabinet or floor-to-ceiling floating shelves, wallmounted storage is the perfect way to best take advantage of all your open wall space. Start by adding a few and then add accordingly as you need them.

Taking design to the next level

MAL CORBOY, INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED INTERIOR DESIGNER IS NOT ONLY RAISING THE BAR FOR QUALITY DESIGN, HE IS ALSO TAKING HIS DESIGNS UP A LITERAL LEVEL TO APARTMENTS.

A

household name in the design industry, Mal has been designing for over 19 years, winning a plethora of awards, including the prestigious SBID International Design Award in 2014 for best KBB project. He is a professional member of DINZ (Designers Institute of New Zealand) and a Certified Kitchen Designer (AU). Mal Corboy is known for more than just kitchens though, designing sleek bathrooms, furniture and full interiors. His latest project, an apartment in the viaduct of Auckland, was an entire do-up of a dated apartment. Mal worked closely with the client to create his dream space. It needed to be gender neutral to broaden appeal when it came time to resell. However, the client’s favourite colour was Hugo Boss Orange, a bold hue that brightened the neutral tones, in small doses. Mal incorporated this orange tone into the kitchen splash-back with gorgeous Bisazza mosaic tiles, as well as in the soft furnishings. Corian Venaro white bench tops and gloss-lacquered cabinets were paired with planked oak throughout the kitchen. 36

MAL CORBOY’S number one PICKS

W

hen it comes to kitchen and interior design, there is only one name that comes to mind: Mal Corboy. And it’s simply because he is, undisputedly, number one. But what are his number ones in life? From food, to fashion, to faraway places, we present the number ones in Mal Corboy’s mind. Restaurant? Oyster and Chop. I am so proud of the fit out we did. Plus, the food and oysters are always great. Favourite cocktail? It would have to be an Espresso Martini.

The bathrooms are reminiscent of a luxury hotel, with Carrara marble floor to ceiling tiles, making the spaces feel large and bright. Metallic fabrics in the bedroom headboard and curtains add a unique touch. Even the TV cabinet is custom designed by Mal Corboy to suit this particular interior. From the plush carpet, right through to the cutlery, everything has been selected and designed with the utmost care and respect for the client’s tastes. The client is delighted with the finished interior, and with Mal’s focus on achieving customer satisfaction, he weighs this as a success. ‘Apartment renovations are always tricky as you are dealing with the body corporate as well as plumbing and electrical issues as most of the time what is on the original plans is never quite right.’ Despite this, Mal Corboy has outdone himself with this gleaming new apartment. Swan Hotel, a haven of luxury.

malcorboy.com

Car? We used Mini’s as they represent our brand so well. Luggage? Got to be Samsonite! I travel a lot and they really do take a beating. Clothing? In case you couldn’t tell, I love loud shirts! Strangely Normal is a favourite paired with G-Star jeans. When it comes to suits, Working Style is my go-to. Favourite watch? Definately Panerai, they are very elegant and strong. Glasses? Oliver Goldsmith. Just simply great, classic frames. Holiday? I love Noosa, over in the Sunshine Coast. Liquor? This one’s easy, any nice Australian Shiraz. Number one tip? You cannot go wrong investing in a qualified designer. The kitchen has really morphed into the heart of every New Zealand home, so why not do it right the first time! 37

Widely recognized as New Zealand’s most awarded kitchen designer, Mal Corboy has garnered an international reputation for his eye-catching interiors and his custom furniture design. and reputation of DBJ proved too good an opportunity to pass up. How do you ensure clients are happy with the products and the service? We are very focussed on innovation and improvement. We are seeking better communication and improved efficiencies right across our platform with the aim of making the client experience better from start to finish. Our new and improved lean manufacturing processes are driving the innovation, along with taking advantage of new technology. Strong and open communication takes care of the happy part and service through an improved, motivated and educated workforce. Your background is in the banking industry, how has this informed the way DBJ is run? Banking is a highly competitive business and all companies are always searching for a competitive edge. My experience in banking was clients are willing to pay for quality, service, honesty and integrity. That’s what I am trying to bring to the table for DBJ - always willing to go that extra mile.

Design by DBJ

In banking, a high standard must always be met. Do you find a similar experience with DBJ? At our end of the market, it is exactly what we are trying to achieve. We have instigated a lean manufacturing program which has been instrumental in cutting down time wastage, increasing quality, reducing errors and increasing our ability to price competitively and meet our deadlines. All targeting a better experience for our clients. What are some of your favourite projects DBJ have worked on? Our favorite projects are usually the ones we are the most sworn to secrecy! For me the best is where the client/ designer/architect/builder are all working together and collaborating to get the best and most innovative product at the best price point. For me that’s the key - everyone on the same page and working to that goal yields work that is enjoyable and invariably the best finished and highest quality work.

What level of interaction and project management am I prepared to give? 3. What is my real budget (including a 30% buffer) and what other costs should we anticipate? 4. Ask to view current work being done and/or visit factory premises - is it clean, tidy and well run? 5. How and how often will you communicate with me?

5 Top Tips from Bardsleys Lighting 1) Do your research before buying LED. LED (Light Emitting Diode) can offer fantastic benefits including low power consumption and long life, but there can be pitfalls, notably High Frequency Flicker (can cause migraines) and too much blue white light (can cause insomnia). The packaging doesn’t always tell the full story so it is important to speak with a genuine LED expert. 2) Any chandelier can be the “right” one. However, if you want the wowfactor, select the best option to match your space, texture, lighting needs and look. To size, a chandelier as the focal point of your space, measure the length and width of the room and add those figures together. As a guideline,

the sum, multiplied by 83, will equal the diameter in millimetres for the chandelier.

entertaining or dining areas. In general, pendants should hang 710mm to 860mm above the bench.

3) If you have a multi story entrance with windows above the door consider how the light will look from outside your home. If possible centre the pendant or chandelier in the view window. In general pendant lighting should be at least 2.2 M off the floor.

5) For bathroom mirror lighting, side lighting creates the most even light for your face, as overhead lighting can create a shadow. For best results place the wall lights at eye height (approx. 1.7M from the floor and 0.7M to 1M apart to give even light).

4) Pendant lighting adds sophistication and elegance to a kitchen island bench and helps to separate the space from

Bringing Craftmanship and Skill of Afghani Artisans to the World TODAY THE MAJORITY OF AFGHANI RUGINDUSTRY WORKERS ARE FEMALES. ZIA UDDIN OF AUCKLAND’S AFGHAN LOOM HAS A PARTICULAR FOCUS ON PROVIDING A MEANS TO FINANCIAL FREEDOM FOR AFGHANI WOMEN WHOSE RIGHTS ARE NEGLIGIBLE COMPARED WITH AFGHANI MEN.

W

e believe we can utilise these women’s skills to create awareness. It’s important they know their work is appreciated and has not been wasted”. Exquisite examples of these beautiful works are now on display at Afghan Loom’s Parnell Gallery where people can experience the artworks first-hand. Zia was the first Afghani national to arrive in New Zealand, not as a refugee, but on a business trip via

50

America during the late 70s. He stayed, and being artistic, was drawn to the arts where he found himself surrounded by well-known artists of the day including Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Hundertwasser gave him legal authority to create rugs using his artwork, with the proviso a percentage of the profit was returned to environmental betterment. A later connection with developer, Les Harvey, expanded his already enviable eye for business and trade. Then a chef with his own restaurant in the Auckland CBD for many years, Zia still loved trading. “In school, anything

“Each rug is hand-made and takes a great deal of work, but they are the finest quality available.”

I could purchase and re-sell gave me great enjoyment and I still love it.” His understanding of arts and culture and business saw Zia identify a gap in the market for contemporary designer rugs. Utterly inspired by New Zealand and Pacific culture he recognised leaping into that gap represented an enormous risk since art appreciation is uniquely personal, but in 1987 he left his restaurant and began importing rugs from all over the globe. By 2010, noting that the popularity of Afghan rugs was waning, he realised it was because Afghan wool was being abysmally processed, washed by hand in river water. Having presented a proposal to USAID for assistance in setting up a wool-scouring factory in Kabul for professional wool processing, the project went ahead. It meant wool was properly washed, had no odour,

and jobs were created in Afghanistan. Initially lacking experienced staff to operate the wool processing plant, Zia was recommended a Napier-based wool-scouring factory. Internationally known for our New Zealand wool expertise, the Napier factory tested all the Afghani factory wool and assisted in many other ways, and Afghan Loom is still grateful today. Once the Kabul factory was working efficiently, they hired almost a hundred people to process local wool. The processed wool was sent for handspinning to individual families all over Afghanistan. The yarns, along with design instructions were then sent on to rug-making families to make rugs at home in their own time. The rugs this mainly female workforce produces utilise strong colours and contemporary as well as traditional designs. Each rug is handmade and takes a great deal of work, but they are the finest quality available. These carpets become heirlooms and last for lifetimes. “In Afghan society rugs are integral to our interior decor, and traditionally we had to make our own to decorate our houses,” says Zia. “That was the era of self-sufficiency but now with technology and internet we have easy access to everything.” Today Zia’s pleasure in his trading skills are augmented by the satisfaction he derives from introducing his clients to the right product for them, and seeing their obvious delight once their

choice of rug has transformed their space to something beautiful and elegant. “The idea of creating such an art piece from just wool, whether it’s sheep, goat, or camel wool, fascinates me.” At Afghan Loom they don’t just think inside the circle, preferring to explore design and remove the limits set by traditional rug dealers. Something high-modern, or something interesting in a more traditional style can be had, including a bespoke (made-to-measure) service. Zia’s clients can also design their own masterpiece for a more personal rug. “Our advice is always to have confidence in your own eye. Don’t hold back. It’s such a personal choice and you will live with it most of your life, so choose quality and the right colours. Our inspiration has been gathered from many of the world’s corners, including more recent Pacific-inspired designs, so we can help, but in the end, you must love your choice.”

Hotel St Moritz unveils new-look in the heart of Queenstown ONE OF QUEENSTOWN’S FINEST BOUTIQUE HOTELS, HOTEL ST MORITZ, WILL START THE VIBRANT WINTER SEASON AHEAD, WITH THE UNVEILING OF ITS RECENTLY COMPLETED MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR REFURBISHMENT.

T

he charming and singular property, which is a member of the global MGallery by Sofitel collection, has revealed its $4 million-plus room revamp as a result of joining the Sofitel universe. Renowned interior designer Stuart Harris has given “elegant, residential, handsome, enviable” touches to the 134 rooms and suites of the hotel, following the completion of its stunning bathrooms last year. Harris, who has been working with the hotel since its development in 1998, has delivered a distinguished design whilst managing to retain its original charming alpine character. The design is specifically reflective of the Central Otago landscape, and highlights

60

the sense of cocooning and serenity within the location. Hotel St Moritz General Manager is pleased with the end result and is certain that the recent renovations will continue to elevate the boutique hotel in the luxury market. “Hotel St Moritz’s unique personality is perfectly matched with the open-minded character of the MGallery by Sofitel brand, and I’m delighted with how Stewart [Harris] has animated our personality with this design,” she says. “Stewart’s design embodies the style, stories and allure of Queenstown, with a whimsical twist.” The refurbishment includes a warm décor of locally inspired artworks, an autumnal colour scheme and cream herringbone woollen throws in each suite. Modern wet bars stand in place of the previous conventional kitchenettes, albeit standard functional appliances remain such as toasters and microwaves, as well as each suite now featuring a Nespresso machine for the coffee enthusiast.

Enhanced cabling and high-speed internet ensures visitors stay connected to the outside world with ease. Furthermore, brand-new Smart TV’s in each suite add another whole level of entertainment possibilities for guests. Hotel St Moritz is New Zealand’s only MGallery by Sofitel property – AccorHotels’ collection of 75 boutique hotels around the world – and AccorHotels’ Senior Vice President Operations, New Zealand, Fiji and Polynesia Gillian Millar says, “Hotel St Moritz in Queenstown embodies the understated luxury of the brand, and this tremendous refurbishment reinforces that.”

Highland Paradise PROUDLY CELEBRATING 30 YEARS

H

idden in the dense bush for nearly 200 years, Maungaroa Mountain (meaning Long Mountain) was the ancient tribal settlement of the High Chief Tinomana Ariki and his people. When he and his tribe converted to Christianity during the early 1820’s, they abandoned their mountain fortress and settled on the coastline of Arorangi, Rarotonga, where they continue to reside. It was during the early 1980’s Raymond Pirangi Senior, a visionary subchief, set his sights on this once secluded mountain hideaway which he shared with his beloved wife Emma. He publicly promised to rebuild a thriving legacy for their young family, for the district of Arorangi and the people of Rarotonga. With the site based 600ft above sea level in the dense bush of the Maungaroa Mountain Valley, this was no

easy task. He sought village and tribal approval and with limited equipment and machinery, began clearing bush, constructing access roads, tapping a natural water supply and connecting power. The dream began to take shape and with Raymond’s candid personality and Emma’s green fingers on July 29, 1987, Highland Paradise opened her gates. The first guided day tours included an exploration of the restored ancient village and botanical gardens. Sadly, the dream was cut short, in 1997 when Raymond fell ill and passed away. With her soul mate gone Emma returned to her provisions store on the coast. Before long, the gardens and dense bush became overgrown and Highland Paradise reverted back into hiding. Thirteen years later, in 2000, Teuira the daughter of the founder returned from New Zealand and decided that the legacy must go on and single-

handedly began the laborious task of rebuilding Highland Paradise to its former glory. Without financial backing and the inability to mortgage on sacred land, she was forced to seek alternative means to begin restoring the site. She sought the assistance of a close network of friends and mentors. It was at this point, that the Highland Paradise Cultural Centre was born and the vision continued.

Tips for a sublime time in Vanuatu

AFTER MUCH ANTICIPATION, IT’S HOLIDAY TIME! YOU’RE ALL BOOKED FOR YOUR GETAWAY TO VANUATU, AND NOW ALL THAT’S LEFT IS TO PACK AND PLAN YOUR ITINERARY.

P

acking for Vanuatu doesn’t just require throwing summer clothes into a suitcase. There are a few things that can specifically help your holiday remain stress-free, especially if you’re embarking on a few adventures only available in this relaxing holiday destination.

mozzie repellant, waterproof plasters, and, of course, aloe vera gel in case of sunburn!

What will you need to pack for Vanuatu? Firstly, more than one swimsuit will be needed as you’ll most likely be dipping your feet into more saltwater than fresh.

Port Vila is both the capital and largest city in Vanuatu. There’s the famous Vila Outdoor Markets full of colourful vendors, fresh local fruits and handmade arts and crafts. Browse the range of vibrant exotic dresses and pick your favourite as a souvenir.

Secondly, ample sun protection is another necessity. The sun shines more often than not in Vanuatu, with average temperatures hitting 28°C during the summer months. Make sure you’ve got water-resistant sunblock and a few light shirts that cover your arms. If you’re going out sailing or fishing, these longsleeved shirts can both protect you from the sun and also ward off the chill from the open seas. You have to remember that Vanuatu is a remote tropical island, so not all medication will be readily available. A basic first aid kit will be extremely useful to have on-hand, complete with

74

What can you do in Vanuatu? Whether you’re happy with a good book and a spot of sun, or have a taste for adventure, you’ll never be wanting for anything to do in Vanuatu!

For those more actively inclined, there’s Mount Yasur, ready for conquering. It definitely is a must-visit, whether you’re eager to climb the 361-metre high summit or prefer to take picturesque views of it on the horizon. Scuba and snorkeling are also iconic island activities that you should try out. Make sure to hire or invest in some reef shoes to complete your day off with a romantic evening walk on the beach.
