since 1973 New Zealand cuisine with a French accent
Intimate dinners, elegant cocktail parties, wedding receptions or any special occasion We’ve been celebrating in style since 1973
he holidays are upon us and it’s time to think about our families, barbeques, sea, salt and suntans! I love summer; it’s the most special season! This issue we want to give you tips to have a healthy summer with your friends and family, it’s so easy over Christmas to indulge, we drink too much, we eat too much and then suffer the consequences in February. We all do it, it’s like we think we deserve it from working hard all year but you can find a healthy balance. Small changes make big differences! See our good living feature on pages 59 to 70, healthy organic eating, lots of fresh vegetables and fruit, a little exercise, then you will really enjoy that glass of champagne and slice of cake! On our Cover is the beautiful super model Kylie Bax and the fabulously famous Colin Mathura-Jeffree, shot at Alexandra Park. Race Nights are a favourite summer activity of mine, in fact Alexandra Park holds race meetings most Friday nights throughout the year, but summer time is especially wonderful with day light savings to see you into the last race. This is a must to do with your friends! We are very excited about the 2014 BMW NZ Polo Open that kicks off early next year; our flip cover showcases some handsome polo players relaxing on a gorgeous Camilla Rug from Designer Rugs. Read all about what to wear and how to behave at the polo on pages 12 to 17. It’s an exciting sport that Auckland’s elite love to be seen at, and what better fun to watch beautiful talented horses and of course good looking players whilst drinking a chilled glass of champagne and eating delights from the Picnic Box! We hope that you have a safe healthy and happy summer and take time to relax and read a good magazine. Enjoy!

SkyWalk Imagine you are walking along a narrow walkway around the outside of the Sky Tower, high above Auckland. There are no handrails, nothing but thin air and the city 192 metres below you! You’ve got spectacular 360° panoramic views of Auckland, its hills, the harbour and the islands beyond. If you look down, you have a perfect bird’s eye view of the city far below. The knowledgeable guides will point out Auckland attractions, tell you stories about the city and challenge you to daredevil tricks. You may start out nervously clinging to your rope, but before you know it you’ll be waving at diners in the Sugar Club restaurant, hanging over the edge, and feeling on top of the world. www.skywalk.co.nz

Platelet-Rich Plasma Skin Rejuvenation at The Face Place Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is ‘harvested’ from your own blood. This is done by collecting a small volume of your blood (much like having a blood test) and spinning it down to separate the red blood cells from the platelet. The resulting PRP is introduced back into the skin with a series of tiny injections. Treatment with PRP is not new to the world; it has been recognized for its accelerated wound-healing properties in surgery and sports injuries for many years. PRP treatment produces a rejuvenating and tightening effect on your skin, giving it a healthy, youthful glow. It is ideal for… Fine lines and wrinkles, Textural improvement, Dull dry skin, Hair-growth stimulation (in those with thinning hair). As PRP is made up of your own blood products there is no risk of allergy, rejection or serious long-term side effects. www.thefaceplace.co.nz

What to Wear ...to the Polo and the Races Angela Stone
ashion at the Polo and the races is a sophisticated affair. City Polo matches and the Races tend to attract a more glamorous crowd. So in order to look the part, have a look through our tips and tricks. Shoes -You may be standing on grass all day. So unless you want to spend the day sinking in the ground, forget about stilettos and opt for heeled wedges, glamorous flats or sandals. When choosing footwear make sure it is comfortable. Dress - Clothing really depends on the weather, but Polo Matches tend to be a little windy. Stay away from short dresses, as you want to avoid showing anything that does not need to be seen. Kaftans are often a crowd favourite; why not pair this with a sophisticated pair of pants or tights. The rule to remember whilst choosing an outfit is ‘If you’d wear it to a nightclub, don’t wear it to the Polo or the races’. Follow these tips, Get your friends together, grab a picnic lunch, a bottle of champagne and you will be set for a fabulous and entertaining day! www.angelastone.co.nz

Kiwi Day at the Races
nterislander Summer Festival is a quintessential Kiwi day at the races with live music, free kids entertainment and good ol’ country racing action to enjoy with friends and family! Over forty sensational events will take place at some of the most picturesque racecourses nationwide from Boxing Day 2013 until 8 February 2014. Interislander Summer Festival will bring a celebration of summer to town – providing a great way to catch up with everyone in a fun and relaxed environment. Family picnics, deck chairs, shorts, jandals and chilly bins – it’s a classic Kiwi summer’s day out. There’s something on-course for everyone to enjoy – kids will be spoilt for choice with all day entertainment and on-track events between races, leaving mum and dad free to kick back, relax, enjoy the atmosphere, local food and a chance to study the raceform. And this year something unique for the Canterbury Jockey Club as they conduct their January raceday at Ashburton in the heart of rural Canterbury. Marketing Manager Chris Rowe says their Riccarton Park course is unavailable due to reparation work so the Club has embraced this opportunity. “We have a significant race on the programme so finding a way run the day was important and the Summer Festival concept should be ideal for Ashburton as well”. The Club has undertaken several initiatives to make it easy for Christchurch people to attend. “We have an overnight package at $129 which includes bus and accommodation plus a day trip option at $39, something to make the ‘away trip’ a bit special”, says Rowe.

Do Away with Harsh Cleansers and Toners Invest in your skin’s future with Snowberry’s Nourishing Cleansing Regimen
magine picking up your harshest kitchen cleanser and using it to give your face a good scrubbing! No one would do this of course, but without knowing, many women use cleansing and toning products with harsh ingredients that can cause skin damage. Soraya Hendesi, founder of anti-aging skincare line Snowberry, has too often encountered cheap facial cleansers and toners that use ingredients that are not only too harsh for skin, but in some cases are the same as those used for household cleaning! While using aggressive chemicals on stainless steel pots and pans may be fine, the skin is a living, breathing organ that relies not just on its tough layer of keratinocytes, but also on an undisturbed protective lipid barrier and acid mantle that includes the beneficial micro-organisms that also help to repel harmful pathogens. Harsh cleansers and toners not only destroy the skin’s natural protective properties, they also degrade the healthy glow we try so hard to maintain.
Instant Deep Cleanser An extraordinary, deep cleansing lotion that removes stubborn makeup while maintaining ideal skin pH.
Instead of anionic surfactants and volatile alcohols, Soraya brought to her cleansers saponins from the South American Soap wood tree and oil from the Indian Neem tree that not only clean but also protect and regenerate skin’s natural barrier. The result? Three exceptional products- the Instant Deep Cleanser, the Gentle Remineralising Toner and the Nourishing Exfoliator. Proper cleansing and toning is one of the most important investments any woman makes in her skin, says Soraya. No amount of spending on creams and serums can fully undo the damage done by long-term use of aggressive cleansing formulations. The question is not “have I removed everything from my skin?” the question must be, “is my cleansing and toning routine doing really good things for my skin?”
Ph: +64 9 263 7900 www.snowberrybeauty.com
Nourishing Exfoliator Especially during winter, the skin loses tone, in part because of the build-up of dead skin cells. But just as it is with cleansing, exfoliation should be gentle. The objective says Soraya is simple - just enough to help slough off the outermost layer of dead keratinocytes.
Gentle Remineralising Toner This superior toner actually cleanses and tones while replenishing the skin.
THE DEEP HYDRATION YOUR SKIN CRAVES SNOWBERRY’S NOURISHING RICH DAY CREAM IS AN EXTRAORDINARY ELIXIR FOR DRY, SENSITIVE SKIN.

Forefront of Fashion
ne of the trademarks of fashion is that it is evolutionary. Our requirements change, depending on our circumstances and environment. Designer boutique, October Reign, is Auckland’s barometer on fashion, leading the way with defined concepts that continue to keep it ahead in a diverse and challenging industry. Nicole Dale, owner of October Reign, has always understood the ever-changing fashion scene and how to dress from season to season, year to year, without completely overhauling her wardrobe every few months. Filling her Newmarket and Ponsonby stores with beautifully tailored designer wear from around the world, she shares her passion and knowledge on how to choose investment or timeless pieces. These are classic fashion garments that will be worn many times as opposed to trendy items that are discarded after a season. The concept of buying quality fashion is well established and may appear for the more staid fashion follower. However, October Reign’s clothes are edge and on the very forefront of fashion. With a host of top European labels including favourites such as Camilla, Robin’s Jeans and True Religion, building an urbane and sophisticated ‘investment’ wardrobe is an exciting prospect. To help find items that suit a client’s lifestyle and what she is trying to achieve, are Nicole’s professional Retail Stylists, all as passionate about building customer relationships as Nicole is. Many of their clients are already firm devotees of the store and drop by to update an outfit with a new accessory, find something for a special occasion or just come in to catch up on the latest OR news. For there is always something happening, whether it is the arrival of an exciting new range or planning the next VIP fashion show, life in the stores is always evolving. October Reign is a true boutique, with attention to styling and creating confidence to wear an outfit and accessories it in a way that takes it to the next step – to make it exceptional. With a changing climate such as ours, dressing in October Reign’s designer clothing will take you from the sun to the snow and back again, looking immaculate and fashionable throughout the day into the night. And isn’t that the point of fashion? October Reign 304 Ponsonby Road, Ponsonby, Auckland. Ph: +64 9 361 6960 30 Osborne Street, Newmarket. Ph: +64 9 520 5160 www.octoberreign.co.nz
Going Nude This Summer?
very now and then you come across someone who is truly passionate about creating beneficial products that enhance your skin. Clint Dowdell creator of Nude by Nature mineral makeup is that guy. We fell in love with this product.
Clint’s top 5 tips for looking perfectly natural and gorgeous this summer: •
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Preparation is everything; your skin needs to be supple and nourished to accept any kind of makeup. Serums and oils nourish, creams generally stay on top. Try the miracle serum from Nude, it’s a fabulous preparation product and gives you 72 hours of hydration. Concealer – don’t go lighter! The area under your eyes is actually purple so you need to neutralize that, in the 80’s makeup artists used to put coral lipstick under the eyes and then cover it with foundation. Pick a colour the same as your skin tone. Less is more. Ask a friend “am I wearing too much foundation?” Then you will know! You don’t want to see your foundation. One application is enough. Travel brush with setting veil is essential. The veil brushed lightly over your face will keep your make up perfect, from early morning to late into the night and it locks it on! It is the perfect finisher to carry in your bag! Gloss and Mascara finishes your look, you need it! Clint Dowdell
Recycled Designer Fashion
ncore Designer Recycle has moved to big, beautiful and jaw dropping new premises. Their new store is located in the previous National Bank premises and next door to the ASB Bank. It’s big at 130 sqm, it’s bright and seriously stocked with beautiful new and recycled designer fashion…you have never seen a recycle store like this! What do Day Birger, Trelise Cooper, Karen Walker, Armani, Zambesi, Saga, Helen Cherry and Country Road all have in common? They are just some of the terrific brands found here. Encore is where designers and retailers send their samples and sale stock, where certain celebrities, fashionistas and those in the know, take their last year’s wardrobe to recycle. Stunning coats and jackets, pretty dresses as well as barely worn sandals, shoes,
handbags, Jewellery and sunglasses are all carefully chosen for quality and appeal. Both local and international labels are laid out specifically with the customer in mind. They are fussy about what they accept to sell and it shows! With a variety of size offerings to choose from, it’s almost guaranteed you’ll find something to be thrilled with. They also arrange the stock in sizes which makes it easy to find what you are looking for. After 35 years in business on Ponsonby Road, Encore is the longest running fashion store on The Strip. They know what their customers want and that’s a relaxed, interesting and fun experience, and ultimately, a successful purchase. If you are interested in selling your wardrobe, you have two consignment payout options to choose from, collect the cash
as things sell, or, if you want to get back a higher percentage, choose the second option where the credit on your account is used to purchase items in store. Feedback on the new shop from regular and new customers alike has been amazing. It’s a completely different recycle shopping experience and we’ve converted a lot of amazed women to designer recycling. Husbands like it too for some reason! Encore is now taking Spring/Summer stock, so clean out your wardrobe now. They accept every day except Saturdays. Swing by… it will definitely be worth your while! Saying YES to Life! Petra Rijnbeek
eauty Guru and Musician Petra Rijnbeek sat down with Eye Magazine to tell us about her latest television venture with YES SHOP on Sky TV Channel 23. Petra, please tell us about your latest role with YES SHOP on Sky TV. YES SHOP on Sky Channel 23 was the vision of New Zealand television producer legend Alistair Duff. He wanted to provide everyday New Zealanders with a range of affordable lifestyle products. He identified that many lifestyle products in New Zealand come with a hefty pricetag and has sought to provide a solution with YES SHOP. The YES SHOP is very much a kiwi community based show that has been designed especially for New Zealanders. A huge part of the show’s success stems from its partnership with well established and reputable KD Media Ltd which owns six of the top performing
shopping channels around the world. Another key point is that the YES SHOP has its own warehouse filled with its own stock, so products can be supplied immediately to customers. The YES SHOP set is located in Central Auckland with a beautiful fresh set. We have seven presenters who each bring their individual television presenting skills to the table. I’m absolutely thrilled to be working alongside the other six presenters MarnieOberer, Mike Puru, Tracey Donaldson, Karen Teague, Richard Lambert and S J Lee. I’m often referred to as the ‘Beauty Guru’ because of my 20+ years experience in hairdressing, styling & makeup, and because of my role as Creative Director with L’Oreal for nearly a decade. On the YES SHOP I have a large focus on beauty products which are sourced from places such as Switzerland, Sweden, Korea and also New Zealand, but I’m also involved in the cooking side as well which I love. Cooking has always been a passion of mine and I love
discovering the new and exciting kitchen products! Petra, you are also a well regarded New Zealand musician. Please tell us where we can find you at the moment. I have always loved music and for many years had the dream to sing. At the age of 30 I made the decision to turn my dream into reality and embark on a career in music. I sing each week at Marvel Grill Restaurant in Auckland’s popular Wynyard Quarter. On Friday nights, the music is fun, dancing and pop style, while Sunday afternoons it’s more of a jazz, blues, soul style. I also sing regularly at private functions, weddings, concerts and product launches. Highlights have been singing at the Atamira festival at The Cloud and writing the song for the Max Fashions campaign. I’ve also had the pleasure of singing with Joe Cocker and opening for Renee Geyer this year.
You are well known for your signature vocals. What inspires you to sing? And what can New Zealanders expect from you over the next 12 months. Wow, that’ flattering. I do think it’s my tone that sets me apart but there is so much talent in NZ it’s hard to stand out when your not the standard NZ sound but I keep plugging away. I have managed to make a small mark in the world of Jazz and Blues. Live music is back in vogue so its a good time for the industry. And I hope to have something very special to share with New Zealand soon – the release of my first solo album – my best story ever! You have done a remarkable job of tackling FMS (Fibromyalgia) while achieving all you do, tell us more about your maintenance of FMS. I was pushing my body to the point of destruction, so after a very enjoyable and rewarding career in the beauty game I knew I needed to slow down. Although there is no cure for FMS, there are things you can do to alleviate symptoms and live a better quality life despite the chronic pain and fatigue including rest, boundaries and doing what you love. I visited a life changing Usana Health Retreat called Sanoviv in Mexico, where I was fortunate enough to meet Dr Myron Wentz of Usana and Denise King (Martin Luther King’s daughter). The trip represented a period of healing for me and I gained many skills to manage my FMS. I still have many difficult days but I have learnt to accept the ups and downs of the condition and now embrace the beauty of having more space in my life. I’m an active petitioner for FMS which has often been misunderstood as a type of depression – where in fact it is a proven condition of the body’s nervous system and fibrous tissue. It now sits under the umbrella of Arthritis New Zealand and we continue to petition the government to understand the need for alternative medicines in New Zealand. www.petrarijnbeek.com

Dream Weddings with the Wow Factor
n an era where there are no old fashioned pressures to tie the knot and where wedding traditions and conventions are open to personal interpretations and preferences, weddings today allow couples to express themselves in a creative way, showcasing their personalities, interests and passions. There is a ground swell of brides and grooms that seek venues where they can create their own style for the dream wedding of their making. This way you can make sure your special day is truly unique, wonderfully memorable and fun! If you want a creative and unique wedding that truly reflects you, then come and talk to us as we thrive on helping you create a “bespoke wedding with the wow factor”. In its own exceptional setting with stunning water views and scented boutique gardens, Pagoda Lodge offers inimitable advantages for a bespoke wedding, set against the backdrop
of Pagoda roofs, life size Buddha statues, a custom built wedding deck and river view marquee. Over the past decade we have been thrilled to be part of a vast array of memorable weddings, each as unique as the couples involved. These have ranged from the bride arriving by steamboat at our jetty, viewed by guests sipping champagne and tasting superb canapés from strategic viewing points along the elevated river bank to providing tea and scones on the lawn, followed by croquet or cricket, before the main feast. As part of our wedding offering, Pagoda Lodge boasts an innovative range of accommodation including deck mounted Safari tents, Boat House, Tree House, Cottages, Family Flats and Gypsy Caravans with outside baths. We have taken the concept of “Glamping” to a delightful new level. Your guests can all gather on one site
and will never forget the unique experience. Couples have the added advantage of organizing their own personal touches to these wonderful settings, whether it be Chinese lanterns or lantern bags with candles dotted around the boutique gardens, customised bunting hung from the mature trees, gazebo and marquee, or massed flowers and lanterns around the fishpond and other ceremonial spots. Both the gazebo and marquee lend themselves to equally innovative touches including creative table settings of river stone displays, peacock feathers or woven flax flowers. Customised themes range from Tropical Island Splendor to Balinese or Asian accents. We can also offer themed weddings from chic and highly fashionable to retro, vintage, simply “fun” or hipster. Weddings at The Grove
oft lighting, intimate, warm décor and professional but friendly service draws you in from historic St Patrick’s square and into The Grove. Since the doors to The Grove opened in 2004, it has secured itself as one of Auckland’s top restaurants because of its unique approach to both food and service. Owners Michael and Annette Dearth along with executive head chef Benjamin Bayly have gained outstanding recognition for the creation of its fine dining haven, focusing on serving food that is modern in style whilst using classic French cooking techniques. The wine list at The Grove is extensive and award winning, featuring wines from around the world. Michael and his team are also always available to match the perfect wine to compliment your meal. Promoting dining that’s accessible, approachable and appeasing, Michael and Benjamin work hard in breaking down the rules of fine dining, wanting to take away the stigma that it is expensive and snooty. They also want to spread the word and promote The Grove as a beautiful wedding venue. They don’t hire room charge and offer a fantastic courtyard flow – guests can come from historic St Patrick’s square, delight in some
champagne and canapés in the courtyard and then move inside for more celebrations. Brides and grooms can be as involved as they like with wedding preparations at The Grove – who offer the option to organize flowers, table settings or music themselves. Being able to seat 60-80 people, The Grove is versatile – tables and chairs lift up from the antique hardwood floors to make room for a dance floor and DJ, staying open until 3 am. Michael and his team relish in the opportunity to help with everything couples need, even giving guests nine different food options, enabling people to choose what they want to eat at the wedding instead of having set menus. They also pay what they normally would pay to dine at The Grove. With an abundance of parking options, more people should know about this perfect wedding venue and its fantastic vibe and even better food. Guests love it as it is so versatile and has absolutely everything you need. The Grove is savvy. They love sharing what’s good in food and wine and opens their doors to everyone showcasing their modern New Zealand cuisine in a warm, friendly atmosphere. Eye Magazine talks to the ‘Mr Yellow Tree’ Singer and Songwriter.
e performed at the 30th, then again at the 35th so it was only natural that Auckland singer Phil Madsen was chosen to perform at the now famous Antoine’s 40th Anniversary Celebration, held recently at Shed 10. He wowed the crowd with a musical tribute, performing hits from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and today. He wrote and produced the four part show that had guests dancing in their seats and calling out for more. It was a class act that people are still talking about. Recognised for his impressive vocal range, and having recently won ‘Top Male Vocalist’ at the New Zealand Variety Artist Awards, Phil has performed at some of the most auspicious events in the country - from private functions for the rich and famous, to concerts with top New Zealand orchestras. He’s been a regular star at Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park and brought the house down at Sky City Starlight Symphony with his performance of Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’ The second youngest in a musical family of eight, Phil has been performing since the age of four. He’s shared the stage with some of the biggest names in the business including Air Supply, Cher, David Copperfield, Hank Marvin, Hootie & The Blowfish and The Pointer Sisters - and the list goes on. Phil’s self-produced first album ‘Mr Yellow Tree’ was released in 2011, and the selection of original tracks reflects his melodic, upbeat take on life and showcases his impressive diversity as a singer-songwriter. His single ‘Dancing on the Moon’ was a finalist at the Apra Silver Scroll awards. Last year Phil released an animated music video for ‘Dancing on the Moon’ which received over 100,000 views, and was selected by Air New Zealand to feature on their inflight entertainment selection. “Air New Zealand loved the video the first time I showed them and were the first in the world to screen it. It was a proud moment,” says Phil. “The song got a second life with the release
of the video and seemed to resonate with both young and old. The views just kept climbing.” So what does the next twelve months hold? Phil will be busy performing at shows throughout New Zealand, and has several overseas bookings, but will still find time to support his favourite charities, as well as squeeze in some writing and studio time. Phil is currently working on a second album and plans to release his new single ‘This World’ in time for Christmas 2013. www.philmadsenmusic.com
ummer’s the perfect time to focus on eating well with an array of delicious seasonal summer fruit on offer. Berries are a great item to dose up on, loaded with numerous anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals. They make a great snack for kids and can be eaten cooked or raw. Blueberries in particular are a favourite of the team at Eye Magazine. Well regarded as a ‘Superfood’, they can reduce free radical damage to the body and have a natural anti-inflammatory effect. They’re high in fibre and a great food to keep blood glucose and insulin levels stable. Blackberries also have a super high nutritional content, containing even more vitamins and minerals than blueberries! Remuera New World in Auckland is a great place to shop for fresh produce and to find organic fruit and vegetables at conventional prices. You can shop for your organics in a traditional supermarket setting while enjoying the old world charm and easy access of Remuera. With the New Zealand summer looking set to be long, hot, and dry – it’s going to be more important than ever to stay hydrated. Focus on consuming lots of water in any given 24 hour period. Your body will reap the rewards and you’ll be less likely to drink other less healthy fluids. The team at Eye wishes you a healthy happy Christmas and summer!

Adrian Barkla at New World, Remuera
Eat Your Salad!
ne of the most popular Auckland supermarkets is New World in Remuera and there is a very good reason for this. Owner Adrian Barkla has created a supermarket with truly organic and healthy food. People come from all over Auckland to shop here as Adrian has a huge selection of great produce and many items usually found in a health food shop. Adrian himself is passionate about being healthy and lives his life in a style to be envied. Summer time is the time of the year we all drink a little more and party a little more too. How do you save yourself from eating the bad carbs after a night drinking? I just want to feel good every day so I attempt to drink way less than the old days but a great lunchtime cure is good old sweetcorn during summer, which is hard to beat, and a lot better for you than the bad stuff. What inspired you to dedicate your supermarket and your life to healthy, organic food? People have got to realise life is not a dress rehearsal. You are quite simply what you eat. Cancer is increasing everyday and there are so many chemicals allowed in food. We have to wake up and say no to all this crap. If you don’t spend the money now on good food you will spend it later on hospital bills. The human body is an amazing machine but like every machine you need to put good fuel in it to get maximum life out of it. Don’t get too technical will all the science just eat large volumes of good fresh organic fruits and vegetables and let your body’s immune, blood and enzyme systems do the rest to restore your body to maximum
vitality. Good fresh organic produce preferably eaten raw everyday is amazing for you. If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired try it for a week. You won’t believe the results. What is the 5 top healthy items you will have in your fridge or cupboard over summer? Look, I am pretty simple. I’ll make sure to have lots of organic salads and vegetables. I make sure to have organic meat for my friends because they love it and good pasta is a must. We drink fresh mint tea from the garden and also have been known to have the odd wine and beer. We heard you have a super juicer. What do you juice? I have the Norwalk Juicer and it’s a beast of a machine. It weighs in at a beefy 16 kg and it has a 1.5-ton press that gently extracts all the minerals out of the juice pulp and also gives you a high fibre but pulp free juice. I juice silver beat, spinach, green peppers and granny smith apples together as my green juice. Also, carrot and granny smith is really great too. If you had to pick one food item only to eat for the rest of your life what would it be? Probably apples. YUM! What will you be promoting in store over summer? Hopefully organic watermelons, capsicums and blueberries. Our Cos lettuces and our avocados are to die for too! At the end of the day I want New Zealand to be totally organic so I will do everything in my power to push organics like giving the growers more money but keeping my prices down. Merry Christmas.

What Does ‘Toning Up’ Actually Mean? By Melissa-Anne Smit from 101 Fitness Tone up (adverb) to make or become more vigorous, healthy, exercise tones up the muscles.
often hear: “I don’t want to build muscle I just want to tone up”. Interesting that the dictionary says to “become more vigorous”. Clients often tell me: “I don’t want to bulk-up, I just want to tone-up”. I even remember myself saying this years ago – but do we really know what we mean? So what is toning? For women, toning up is what naturally happens to our bodies when we incorporate a muscle building or 25 minute resistance session into our fitness regime. Toning can only happen if we build the muscle first – this new muscles will then start using the excess fat fuel (because muscles burn more calories) and the layer of fat will slowly disappear from our bodies. This will then bring the defined muscle to the surface giving us a tones physique. There is no
need to strip away the fat layer if there is no toned muscle underneath. Some women have more muscle tone than others, and everyone will build tone muscle to what their bodies are naturally programmed for, given the right exercise. So next time you think “I want to tone up for summer”, I hope you’ll remember that you are actually saying “I want less body fat and more lean muscle underneath” – and that you don’t get that by swinging light weights around for hours – you need something vigorous that will build muscle. We have to effectively condition our muscles through resistance training. For men exactly the same applies – you’ll just build bigger muscles because of your testosterone levels which allow you to stimulate more muscle growth than women. So, toning up can only happen if we build muscle below our layer of fat. The toning
up bit happens as the end result of muscle building up and fat burning down. Toned arms and abs appear when the excess layer of fat has started to disappear and the muscle definition comes to surface. All in all, men bulk-up when muscle training and women tone-up –so start working those muscles vigorously (remember the definition) see you next time! 101 Fitness is a boutique fitness facility. The 25 minutes a week of intensive training was the solution to my aversion to exercise and busy life style. Not only have I seen benefits in developed muscle tone but my body shape has changed” Sharon, Auckland

Flow... Illuminating the Way to Happiness
ith summer upon us, it’s the perfect time to take stock of our health & wellbeing status and refocus our goals. The theme this volume is ‘Flow’! I have a friend who always says, that if something doesn’t go your way - there must be something better around the corner. Over the years, I’ve adopted this mantra, and found that for the most part – there usually is something better around the corner! The concept relates to being in the flow of life. When we’re in the correct flow, we’re able to move through life gracefully, accepting events that take place around us and ceasing the need to control every minute detail of our lives. Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi has written the popular classic book ‘Flow – The Psychology of Optimal Experience’ and while the book may seem a little dry in places it does record a number of famous investigations of “optimal experience”. The
key point to take home, is that what makes any experience genuinely satisfying - is a state of consciousness called flow. And so rather than REACTING to outside events, we can instead train ourselves to INTERPRET outside events, gaining greater control of our inner experiences and an improved quality of life. After all, isn’t that what we all seek – the best possible quality of life? When asked recently what I want from life – my answer was – Isn’t life what happens when you’re making other plans? Products to check out this quarter are Fresh As premium dried fruit powders and segments. I especially love their recipe for old fashioned ice blocks – the perfect summer treat! And Blackmores Alive Multivitamins – a blend of 20 fruits and vegetable powders packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and enzymes. www.andreabruce.co.nz

A Little Less, a Little More, and Battling The Nether
hen Blackmores invited me to take part in their latest ‘health and fitness’ campaign, I was excited to learn all about – A Little Less, A Little More. The health campaign was launched in Australia earlier in the year and has been a hit - with thousands of members signing up to become actively involved and posting pics and goals on facebook, instagram and twitter. Following this success, Blackmores launched October in New Zealand. The premise behind the campaign is to motivate people to become healthier in a fun and interactive way. People often feel overwhelmed by long-term fitness commitments but this program is super easy. The marketing is clean and fresh. Just jump on-line to www.blackmores.co.nz/ littlelesslittlemore to make your pledge and record your commitment, and it’s free! It’s all about committing to small positive changes that are achievable and sustainable. In my household, there’s a definite need to turn down the media. So my commitment was for A LITTLE LESS SOCIAL MEDIA and A LITTLE MORE LIVING. I registered my son for A LITTLE LESS MINECRAFT and A LITTLE MORE OUTDOOR PLAY. While we live a pretty active lifestyle, there’s no doubt there’s always room for more for exercise and improvement! Upon entering your goals, you can sign up for a supportive e-newsletter
and receive a goody bag packed with health supplements and vitamins. What I love about this campaign is the momentum it has gathered with individuals posting stunning and inspirational pictures and quotes on instagram. While instagram is still gathering interest in New Zealand, its set to have a greater personal impact in the future with facebook looking more like a newsfeed full of ads these days. So before I get caught up in more social media, I’m reminded that REAL LIVING is about faceto-face interactions, phone calls and reality. Social media tends to have an element of fantasy to it. However, perhaps that’s what makes this campaign so successful - the blending of REAL goals with fun on-line imagery? Either way, it’s a fun and easy way to align yourself with more healthy living which in turn translates to increased ‘Quality Of Life’. I’m pleased to report that I’m now spending less time on social media and while I had to lock my sons’ MacBook Pro in a cupboard, he’s spending less time on Minecraft battling terrible things in The Nether. So get started today and make your commitment! It’s amazing what you can achieve with small changes. Andrea Bruce - Eye Magazine’s Health and Wellness Expert www.blackmores.co.nz/littlelesslittlemore

A Northland Boy at Heart
orthland boy Paul Jeeves of Bayleys in the North knows Real Estate like the back of his hand. He has built a career on doing what he loves and found success on an international scale. But this Northland boy knows exactly where home is and nothing beats a backyard like his. Eye Magazine caught up with property expert Paul to find out what there is to know about Real Estate in the North. When did you first become involved in real estate? I have been involved with the real estate and the construction industry all my life. I grew up in a Residential construction family and was closely involved from the age of 15. Are you a local Northland boy? I am a fourth generation Northlander on both sides of the family tree. My wife and two of my three children were also born in Northland. I grew up with Northland as my backyard and Northland has always been the place that I call home. How has the Northland market changed over the last two years? The Real Estate market in Northland has been one of gradual improvement over the past couple of years. The current Real Estate
climate in the Far North is one of optimism, which has become evident with the increased volume of sales across the region. Because of the diversity of markets in the Far North the increased sales has been marginal in some regions (Paihia, Kaitaia) and more significant in other regions (Kerikeri, Mangonui). The market improvement can be attributed to a number of factors including confidence in the economy and the effects of the Christchurch and Auckland markets, however one of the biggest factors is that the Far North offers value for money. You have had some impressive overseas success overseeing multi-billion dollar projects in Dubai and Ireland and the US. How was that experience for you? Rewarding. I have been very fortunate to have had these opportunities and it has always been my philosophy to take the most from every experience. Having the opportunity to live and work in Europe, the Middle East and the United States has afforded me the chance to grow personally and to gain perspective. I try to build on each experience and take those lessons forward and hopefully add value to each new endeavour. What brought you back to Northland? When all is said and done there is no place
like home. Northland and New Zealand offers a beauty, a temperament and a lifestyle that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. You do not have to look any further than our own backyard to see how lucky we are in New Zealand. To be able to throw a ball around on a patch of green grass, to put line over and get dinner, this is what I grew up with. Family, work, lifestyle and opportunity. Northland allows me to balance these things, to enjoy a quality of life and so in the end I am a Northlander at heart and now also in presence. Bayleys Kerikeri l Bayleys Paihia Ph: 0800 BAYLEYS
Real Estate in the North
iversity of Opportunity. While diversity and opportunity in themselves perfectly sum up the Far North, it is the combination of these two words that reflect the Real Estate market in the Far North of New Zealand. Whether it be a first home or rental investment in Kaikohe, a summer bach in Houhora, West Coast views from the Hokianga, the quintessential kiwi town lifestyle of Kerikeri or the Island life of the Bay of Islands, the Far North offers in an abundance a ‘Diversity of Opportunity’. As we continue the march toward summer, the autumn and winter months have shown that the Real Estate market in the Far North is truly on the improve. This has been made evident by the sales statistics and the increase in enquiry (both directly
and via the internet). What is more profound however is the air of confidence and positivity within the Far North communities. The last six months has seen a marked improvement in activity and this activity is across the board in terms of value. Investors are taking advantage of well priced opportunities in regional towns such as Kaikohe and Kaeo and purchasers from around New Zealand are relocating to Kerikeri and the Bay of Islands to enjoy all that the region has to offer. Autumn and Winter activity has increased year on year for the last few years with the number of sales over the last six months for the Far North up 19% on the same period in 2012 and up a whopping 50% on the corresponding period for 2011. While volume of sales are increasing this
has to be tempered with the realisation that property prices are not. The static nature of property prices makes the Far North region an area of opportunity for prospective purchasers, where fantastic properties can be obtained for a realistic value. The Far North currently embodies the phrase “Value for Money” and it is this concept coupled with the truly magnificent lifestyle that the Far North offers which is seeing national and international purchasers returning to the region. For more information on any of our great opportunities as well as professional and personalized attention to your Real Estate needs please contact one of the Bayleys Far North team or drop in and see us in our Kerikeri or Paihia offices. Bayleys – A reputation for results.

riving through the picturesque and historically significant Far North town of Kerikeri, you get a sense that its people are a vibrant, international and local mix of artists, artisans and orchardists. Happily co-existing and tapping into the rich local talent and raw produce, you will find a world-renowned skin-care and cosmetics producer, a chocolate factory, liqueur maker, many award-winning wine producers, coffee companies, potters and artists as well as clothing brands that all call Kerikeri home. To strangers it comes as a pleasant surprise to find such a unique blend of sophistication and world-class excellence in the offerings and atmosphere of this somewhat remote little oasis, which is a good three hour drive north of Auckland, and situated on the edge of the Bay of Islands. This is also where you will find Heike Ngan creating her distinctive, boutique women’s wear line of Heike Designer Clothing, which she sells online at www. heike.co.nz as well as in her recently opened studio+gallery+boutique, boldly called “Heike by Design”. She says the name aptly describes the environment she has designed specifically to create in, as well as use as a showcase and boutique to sell clothing, art and her design services. She believes emphatically that good design in all things, be it clothing, interiors or the composition of a painting or work of art, and everything else we use in our lives, are intrinsic to their long-term relevance, enjoyment and value. “Life is Art” is a catchphrase she uses
repeatedly in conversation, while waving her hands for emphasis. “It all comes down to planning. They say you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear, but I beg to differ. I enjoy seeing the greater beauty that good design and planning will give you than just the sum of its single parts. I love the marriage of old and new in the things I create. For example, with my clothing line, there is often a nod to older, more evocative prints and fit that reflect my love of the sixties, seventies and eighties, the years that formed me. But I stay very current with the latest technologies and our constantly evolving collective psyche, so that my ‘old but new’ is perfectly in tune with our modern lives and sensibilities, but have a timelessness that only good design and forward thinking can offer.” Ph: +64 9 407 8513 www.heike.co.nz

Whangarei Councilman David Sinclair
iving in Whangarei all his life and having previous generations who were some of the original early settlers in the Whangarei District, David Sinclair stands for the Northland Regional Council. Also managing director of two companies, Killer Prawn Restaurant and McMorrissey’s Irish Pub, David provides a younger, fresher and more enthusiastic outlook on issues within the area and is committed to ensuring the growth of Northland whilst protecting its environment. Eye Magazine recently got the chance to have a chat with David Sinclair himself. How are you enjoying your role? I was initially taken by surprise at the amount of reading required and the multitude of words it takes to state the obvious, however, having settled in I am now beginning to enjoy my new role and have every confidence that I will be able to fulfill my ambitions and be a positive influence on proceedings within the Northland Regional Council. When did you decide you wanted to run for council? 6 years ago I campaigned to be elected
to the Whangarei District Council and was not successful. This year I decided that a position within the Northland Regional Council would enable me more scope to become involved with regional economic development, it would also enable me to assist in environmental issues and help maintain standards. If you could describe Whangarei in one sentence, what would you say? Whangarei, I love it here! What do you love about Whangarei and its surroundings? The coast, the many beautiful, picturesque beaches, hills covered in native bush and walking/running tracks in abundance. How do you maintain being a councillor and managing director of the Killer Prawn Restaurant and McMorrissey’s Irish Pub? I have great staff, many of whom have been on the team for over 12 years. Whilst settling into my council role has required a number of sacrifices, both on my part and theirs, I have the utmost confidence that we can settle into this new challenge without
compromising either role. I’ve found that my time is not my own as much. What is the best piece of advice you have been given? Never answer a complex media question outright, rather, take the opportunity to call them back with the answer after you’ve “done your homework”. Secondly, a phrase from a poem my parents gave me on my 21st birthday by Rudyard Kipling: “If you can talk with crowds, keep your virtue, or walk with Kings – nor lose the common touch”.
Catch Your Own Dinner This Summer
ew Zealanders love the outdoors and the mere choice and accessibility of such pursuits, is one of the great advantages of life here. While many New Zealanders spend their weekends and holidays outdoors, fishing remains New Zealand’s most popular sport. Almost 15% of New Zealand families own their own boat and New Zealand is reputed as one of the world’s great fishing countries. We have a great selection of deep sea fishing attractions here in New Zealand, with almost guaranteed fish, from swordfish and XOS Striped Marlin, Spearfish, Bigeve and Yellowfin Tuna, Mahimahi, Snapper just to name a few. Anglers from all around the world come to New Zealand to try their luck in our crystal clear waters.
Fisher’s Paradise ‘Fish for the people’ in Aotearoa
ack in 1926 renowned American author and angler Zane Grey waxed lyrical about the saltwater and freshwater game fishing he experienced in New Zealand, writing “Tales of an Angler’s El Dorado” to document his adventures here. Eighty-odd years later, New Zealand remains an angler’s paradise with worldclass saltwater and freshwater fishing. Recreational fishing is hugely popular in New Zealand with over 800,000 Kiwis fishing for food and fun every year. Fishing’s a big part of our lifestyle, often a family affair, and participation levels are growing. Even New Zealand’s most populous city boasts superb snapper fishing right on its doorstep, contributing towards Auckland being named one of the world’s ‘most liveable cities’. Many popular marine species can be taken from the shore, or from small boats and kayaks. Larger craft are able to venture further offshore and include charter boats that offer visitors and locals
a cost-effective way to catch a feed of fish. Sea fishing licences are not required, but regional catch and size limits are enforced. Visitors come from all over the globe to sample New Zealand’s deep-sea and inshore fisheries, as well as it’s trout fishing, regarded by many as the best of its type in the world. For most Kiwi anglers – and many visiting fishers – snapper is the number one target. In the north of the North Island it is an iconic catch. Snapper grow to at least 15kg, but any fish approaching 9.1kg (the old 20 pounds) is considered a trophy. Many such fish are taken every year, even in the Hauraki Gulf, with a third of the New Zealand’s population living around its shores, where fishing pressure is relatively high. Other important recreational species include record-size kingfish (up to 50kgplus), blue cod, tarakihi, kahawai, trevally, John dory, hapuku and bass, flatfish, sharks, various tuna species and four billfish species.
Most of New Zealand’s popular recreational fish species are managed for sustainability, so the quality of fishing, if not quite what it was in Zane Grey’s day, remains mostly good. However, commercial overfishing, population pressure, land use changes and access and environmental issues pose growing threats to the future wellbeing of our fisheries. Funded by donations, recreational angling watchdog and advocacy group LegaSea, the public outreach arm of the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council, is committed to its goal of abundant fisheries and a healthy marine environment. LegaSea supports and promotes the interests of non-commercial fishers for the conservative management of New Zealand’s precious fisheries resources, to ensure there are abundant fisheries for future generations of Kiwis. LegaSea has advocated on behalf of ordinary New Zealanders whenever a public fishery was in danger, including during the recent furore over proposed changes to recreational bag and size limits for snapper in the Bay of Plenty and east coasts of Auckland and Northland, which resulted in 47,000 public submissions to the Ministry of Primary Industries. It will continue to advocate and educate – with your help. LegaSea needs donations to continue its work. A Day Out with Ultimate Charters By John Eichelsheim
recently joined Ultimate Charters’ skipper Alex Mahon and a group of enthusiastic anglers aboard the 9.1m aluminium sportfisher Red Skin for a six-hour charter chasing snapper, kingfish and kahawai amongst the work-ups beyond Tititiri Matangi Island. Red Skin is one of the newest additions to the Ultimate Charters fleet. She’s based at Pier Z in Westhaven, Auckland and with a 325hp diesel engine, she is a fast boat purchased specifically with trips of this nature in mind. Red Skin can fish a maximum of eight anglers, plus crew, but more usually sets out with a skipper and four to six anglers. Lower numbers ensure uncrowded fishing and more individual attention from the crew. Fishing tuition is a big part of the experience, explains Alex, who loves introducing anglers to lure fishing, an important aspect of fishing work-ups out in the Hauraki Gulf. “Many of our customers have never tried soft baits or Jitterbugs [heavy metal jigs with octopus skirts and assist hooks], but a few minutes of coaching and the right gear quickly sees them into fish,” said Alex. Ultimate Charters can supply all the gear if required, as well as bait, and Red Skin was well provided with good-quality fishing tackle
and a selection of lures in hot colours. Our crew included a father and son team of regular charter fishers trying workup fishing for the first time. They were keen to learn about Jitterbugs and to their credit stuck with lures throughout the day, despite unusually challenging fishing. Like me, the rest of the crew had brought their own gear, but with our commitment to fish lures in the work-ups, the bait-fishing gear was stowed in favour of the boat’s good quality lure-fishing tackle. Alex kept us supplied with Jitterbug lures fresh from their packets, changing sizes and colours until we found the ones that worked best. Work-up fishing is exciting! On a good day gannets rain from the sky like missiles, shearwaters flutter, splash and dive, dolphins smash into bait schools and whales often make an appearance. Under the sea’s surface lies the reason for all that frantic activity: huge schools of anchovies and pilchards pushed to the surface by voracious snapper, kahawai, kingfish and other predators. Sharks and dolphins often get in on the act as well. It’s a fisherperson’s paradise and one of the best ways to experience it is to take a charter with an experienced skipper like Alex. While work-up fishing can be spectacular, it can also change from day to day. One day
Fancy a day on the water?
the fishing can be superb and the next it can be tough going and unfortunately for us, we struck it on a tough day. Fishing the day before had been great, with huge workups and hundreds of boats, including Red Skin, taking advantage of the fishy bounty. A day later our charter found workups too, but they were short-lived, sporadic and spread over a large area, so Alex had to work extra-hard to put us onto fish. So that’s what he did, repositioning the boat regularly and chasing down the most promising activity. And the hard work paid off as one by one we put fish in the bin. The highlights included a personal-best snapper for one of the crew and a good-sized kingfish that joined snapper and kahawai in the icebox. Six hours flies by when you’re having fun and our charter was over all too soon. The fishing hadn’t been easy, but getting out wide chasing work-ups is an experience in itself and by the end of the trip we’d caught some quality fish. No-one would go hungry.

list of contemporary fishing tackle reads like the periodic table of elements: carbon fibre, titanium and silicon carbide are all part of a wide range of today’s tech tackle components. Reels packed with modern technology, such as magnetic seals, digital machining, and dead-eye gear alignment. Lures come in a range of weights, from 3.3g to 750g, in any colour you can imagine, and with ultraviolet glow and harmonic emitting resonances. Super braided lines are thin and have a strength-to-weight ratio eight to 15 times stronger than steel. So does having all the cool new gear make a difference? Absolutely it does – in the correct arrangement. The way you string it all together is key. But when you have the right balance between rod, reel, line and lure you can keep in touch with the lure, moving it accurately and ensuring you stay in the bite zone. It can easily go wrong: rod’s too stiff so the lure won’t work, so the fish won’t bite; line too heavy so the lure won’t get to the strike zone, so the fish can’t bite. For jigging, softbaiting, micro jigs and inchiku fishing, success lies in the detail. Getting that balance right is GoFish’s specialty. GoFish makes sure you walk away with the correct gear, not just any gear. GoFish imports and sells only the world’s best fishing tackle. Most items are exclusive to the boutique store. It’s well worth a visit, either in person or online. www.gofish.co.nz

hat is it about blokes and toilet cleanliness? I am reminded of an old joke which was a sign by a urinal: “Stand closer; it is shorter than you think”. Where I work, on a brand new day, when the cleaners have been in overnight, there are days when it’s a complete mess after about 11 o’clock. I’m not talking about the odd flick-induced urine equivalent of blood spatter; there are Kermadec Trench deep pools of urine on the floor and you need waders (remember galoshes?). That’s when it gets really awkward. You know at golf, when you’re putting and you stand awkwardly to avoid standing on some guy’s line (and you miss the putt and swear that you’ll never do it again)? It’s like that in men’s toilets a lot of the time; you have to place your feet carefully to avoid collecting waste product and traipsing it all through the office carpet when you return to your toiling. It’s even more problematic when the only dry area is all on one side of the urinal, so you have to stand side on to the wall, which is all well and good until someone comes through the door and wonders why you’re showing him a profile of Mr Floppy. One cause of the problems (Lake Taupo in the toilet and unwashed hands) is that a lot of blokes would like to think they can achieve an empty bladder from what you might call: a “hands-off approach” in which the evacuation is completed without contact between hands
and brains. First of all, what happens when you put a fire hose on the ground and turn the tap on? Exactly. Secondly, a consequence of the hands-off approach is that many a bloke will fold up his tent and walk out without feeling the need to introduce cleansing water to the hand or hands (the plural for the members of the West Indian cricket team, mon …. aaaaaaarf). I’m sorry but, in my book, such an approach doesn’t relieve blokes (aaaarf) of the risk of urine contamination and consequent need to wash their hands. If the floor of the office urinal is anything to consider, that yellow stuff flies everywhere and I just don’t see how you can say, with the necessary certainty, that there was no risk of spillage onto your hands. STOP PRESS – it’s just occurred to me: canny readers will have realised that I must be talking about those who have been circumcised since (I think) the “others” can’t possibly adopt a hands-off approach … can they? Look, let’s leave this detour on the foreskin effect on urination on the basis that, Jewish or not, you should wash your hands after doing no. 1’s - don’t be lazy. That’s bad enough but it gets worse, so much worse. I’m talking about the guys who come out of the cubicles and don’t wash their hands. Remember Jerry Seinfeld when the chef came out of cubicle, adjusted his collar and said to Jerry that he was going to cook his meal, before walking off without washing his hands? Well, there was a guy on my floor who, after a cubicle visit, would turn the tap on at a slow dribble, flash 2 fingers under the dribble and consider his hands washed. You can guess that he certainly didn’t wash his hands after no.1s. It was as a result of that last guy (and the ensuing dirty door handles) that we developed what is called the “H Manoeuvre” (and, most certainly, would never shake his hand). This is a sacred rite in our office but, for the sake of humanity, I am passing it on. On a visit to the urinal, the following is the accepted and acceptable practice: 1. The door to the toilet on entry must not be touched by any part of the hand which could come into contact with Mr F. Pull your sleeve down over your hand, if necessary. 2. Since so many users never flush the
urinal, it is quite necessary for some to double flush, so, using your index finger knuckle, push the flush button upon first confronting the urinal. 3. Do your very best to piddle in the urinal and not at the urinal. 4. Zip up, with usual degree of care. 5. You may push the flush button with any part of your hand since, after all, your hand is going to be cleansed soon. Out, damned spot … 6. Tap on. Your hands can’t get any dirtier, so use what you like to turn it on and enjoy this moment of freedom. 7. Soap on hands is mandatory. A good lather like a brain surgeon before an operation is desirable. 8. Hands under water. It is imperative, to be able to assert a full H manoeuvre (if challenged), that, while you wash off the soap, your hands stay under the water for the entire first verse of “Happy birthday” – you may hum under your breath. 9. Paper towels – 3 is an appropriate number but this recommendation is subject to point 10. 10. Hands should be quite dry. 11. Using paper towels, grasp door handle and, as you open the door, you should be considerate to others and use the paper towels to give the toilet door a bit of a clean. 12. Hold door open with foot and drop paper towels into the rubbish bin, which you have placed beside the door for just this reason. Since I’m thinking about toilet matters, there is an unwritten rule needing recording on the subject of cubicle courtesy. If you are sitting on the dunny and you hear someone come in, just sit there quietly until the interloper has had the chance to get out of Dodge. “Hold all tickets”. Don’t start farting or grunting. Certainly, do not start dropping a load because we’re all going to get embarrassed. The sound of toilet paper across hairy bottom is also a bit of a no-no. Since anyone worth his salt is going to try to get out as fast as possible (in case you start breaking the unwritten law), just sit there quietly until you hear the door close. Alright?

hat do you think of NZ women having cosmetic surgery? Rubbish! New Zealand women are beautiful and don’t need surgery, you just can’t beat natural beauty! Where would you take your wife for a romantic getaway? On the SeaLink Ferry over To our bach in Waiheke at Blackpool, Waiheke is so peaceful, it’s instantly relaxing as soon as we step onto the ferry. Or I’d take her to Queenstown. Queenstown is a magical place and we love to visit it when we can. What’s your favourite NZ restaurant? I always prefer my wife’s home cooked meals to any restaurant! She is a marvelous cook! Also, our friend Margaret from Waiheke makes the best pork roast I have ever tried! I took Lindsey Proctor over for a roast and he was too embarrassed to ask for seconds – then he was kicking himself later as it was so yummy! When did you decide that you wanted to be a butcher? When I left school there wasn’t many opportunities for ‘not smart’ people. I had
to get a job and being a butcher was it! I’ve worked my way up and loved every second of it, success and fame hasn’t changed me. I overheard a friend talking about me the other day, he said “I’ve known Peter for over 40 years and he is still exactly the same bloody idiot that I first met all those years ago”…what a lovely compliment! Who do you regard as your role models? I’ve never had a role model, I’ve based my work ethic off my parents who have a good, honest work ethic and are just great people. What is the best advise you have been given? Tim Bickerstaff told me when I first started advertising on radio, “Don’t get your head up your ass. I’m still the star of the show”. If you were prime minister for the day what would be the first thing you would change? I would make it compulsory for every school in New Zealand to make Rugby league available for all students to play Who is the most interesting person you have met and why? Over my career I have got to meet so many
wonderful people. Earlier this year I got to meet the legend himself Andre Agassi. I spent some time with him and later that evening Andre had to make a speech; it started like this, “I love coming to New Zealand…... (long pause) and f#@K I love that mad butcher!” More recently I got to meet some inspiring young New Zealanders called Liam and Bradley, both battling cancer. They are both in recovery now and I was very proud to meet them! If you had to choose an alternative career what would it be? I am happy as a sand boy with what I’ve chosen for my life. It has been an education and a privilege to do what I do. I’ve met some amazing people and made wonderful life long friends. Highlight of your year so far? This year I was lucky enough to be able to take my two daughters, my granddaughter and my beautiful wife to Europe for five weeks, We got to spend some real quality time together and make some memories to last a life time. Where do you want to be in 5 years time? Alive! I just got out of hospital last week and want to make the most of life!

BMW Polo Open 2014
t doesn’t get any more exclusive, glamorous and entertaining than the finals day of the BMW Polo Open 2014, in the picturesque small-town of Clevedon, just out of Auckland. Polo is known as the sport of kings and New Zealand’s event is no less prestigious, with the who’s who of society, the most luxurious of brands, majestic pure bred ponies and of course teams of fit, strong and successful polo players. And that’s just the beginning. As the foremost equine event of the year in New Zealand, the polo is the place to be seen come summer time for anyone who likes to mix and mingle with the highest echelons of the social scene in New Zealand. It’s a day of frivolity and fun mixed in with serious and hard-fought chukkas. This is polo at its international best with top ponies brought in from around the country specifically for this day, and several international players fly in to help teams fight for the prestigious title.
So hang in one of the luxury marquees sipping Veuve Clicquot, walk the perimeter of the course, watch the game and meet glamorous others, or cheer on your favourite team. The BMW Polo Open in 2014 is a special event not to be missed. Eye Magazine will be at The BMW Polo Open again this year and here is our guide for the day; what to see, what to wear and of course, what to drive. Hope to see you there! What is Polo?... Doing a bit of research on how a game of polo works is key to making the most of your day. People live for this sort of competition, so faces get serious when the riders come out. In a nutshell, a game of polo is played by two teams of four players. It is broken into chukkas which are about six minutes long and there can be up to eight chukkas per game. The aim is to score goals by hitting the white ball with a mallet in between the two goal posts at the end of the triple-rugby-sized field. Not as easy as it sounds when galloping horses are in the mix.
Players are ranked for skill and range between negative two-goal (the lowest competitive ranking) and 10-goal (New Zealand’s highest is 8-goal player John-Paul Clarkin). Professional players often change ponies in between each chukka as it’s very tiring for the animals. It is a high-intensity, high-skill and high-calibre game and you won’t see anything like it anywhere else. What a way to spend a day! How to Book... See The BMW Polo Open link on iTicket and join us on the day, whether on the Britomart Country Club Hill, the Fashion Lawn, or contact Event Director Amy Calway to book the exclusive luxury marquee spaces around the field. And don’t forget to like BMW Polo Open page on facebook for your chance to win the Ultimate VIP Polo Upgrade and for the latest Polo Style Fashion tips. Polo Essentials... What to wear... A day at the polo is a classy affair and deciding what to wear is more important than you may realise. The dress code is very sophisticated, and not at all trashy. Short or tight skirts and fascinators are a no-no and because you’re on grass, stilettos are impossible. The best advice is to start from the feet up. For ladies, a flat sandal, espadrille or chunky wedge in a block colour is a great place to begin. Comfortable shoes are essential as a large part of the day will be spent standing on grass or a paddock of sorts watching the games. You’ll also be stomping the divots at some stage, so you’ll need a good chunky sole. The dress or skirt should be longer than mid-thigh and think big fun florals and prints, something that will make you stand out from the crowd. Natural fibres like silk, linen or cotton help too as breathable fabric is ideal for the heat. Think tasteful and chic fitted shifts, check out Ted Baker for some great styles, and remember if you would wear it out to a bar or club on Saturday night, don’t wear it to the polo. Moving upwards again, keep your fascinators for the races; instead opt for big hats that keep the sun out and the style in, or a fun unique headpiece by the likes of New Zealand Milliner Natalie Chan. Straw boaters and wide-brimmed straw hats also work well. Keep accessories to a minimum and aim for bold block colours that match with your outfit, in bracelets and chunky necklaces, or some beautiful colourful jewels from the likes of Orsini. A hold-all bag is essential for the day out, as it will need to have everything in it from sunblock to a cardigan/shawl if the weather changes. Think a classic leather shoulder bag from Coach, nothing too glitzy or over the top. Overall, aim for simple sophistication with a touch of fashionable flair. For the lads... For the gentlemen, a good pair of jeans, moleskins, cotton chinos or Bermuda shorts are suitable for the bottom

half. For the top, a crisp and well ironed cotton or linen shirt in light colours will work well, as well as polo tees with collars. Aim for the Rodd & Gunn look and if you’re in need of some help, they’re the place to go for quality advice and clothes. On the feet go for leather boots, loafers, or canvas boat shoes, but no winkle pickers, sports shoes or jandals please. Sunglasses and a hat are essential. Expect to see... Ted Baker and other International Brand Fashion catwalk shows throughout the day! What to drink... When spending a day at the polo, keeping hydrated is essential. A glass of water between each drink is the best way to keep a hangover at bay and also to avoid getting too tipsy. Have a bottle of chilled Perrier on hand to help with that. The perfect fresh taste, still or sparkling, will keep you going all day. For those partial to a celebratory glass of bubbles on such an occasion, you can’t go past the iconic yellow and delicious flavour from a classy stem of Veuve Clicquot. A classic cocktail is a must for the polo sidelines as well, and you don’t get much more English country manor style than a glass of well mixed Pimms with fresh fruit to satisfy your taste buds. And for the lads who are more inclined for an ice-cold beer, Heineken is the drink of choice. Associated with elite sports world-wide, there’s nothing quite like one to quench your thirst. What to drive... For those who think it might be safer to trust someone else to drive them home than take the risk themselves, there will be buses to and from Auckland city centre on the day of the finals. For the others of you who are more inclined to arrive in style, a BMW is the car of choice. At The BMW Polo Open you’ll see the latest BMW 2 Series Coupé and the BMW 4 Series Convertible, the most attractive and sporty convertible in its class. And one of the crowd’s favourite events each year sees a fast polo pony and rider challenging the latest BMW M5 in a race around the field, with often surprising results!

kid but was a bit overwhelmed by the whole thing. After my second child I returned to the family farm near Clevedon, and found a whole lot of great, down-to-earth people out here. I realised that the polo was a sport that had so much potential in the New Zealand market and needed someone to get behind it. That was me, and I’ve been involved for three years now. Have you ever played polo? I decided to try my hand as an adult last year for the winter season with a couple of other girls for the Maiden’s League. It was great fun and I loved it. New Zealand is one of the very few places around the world where this sport is accessible to the public.
MW Polo Open event director Amy Calway has polo in the blood. Born and bred in Clevedon, she’s grown up with horses so working with them is second nature for her. Having worked around the world on luxury yachts, and as a top magazine sales person in New Zealand, taking the polo on board was the next big task for her. We talked to her about the polo on the day of the cover photo shoot... How did you get into Polo? I fell in love with the romance of it at a young age. I started riding at the age of four years old, and gave polo a go once when I was
What are you most looking forward to about the polo this year? Watching it all come together is going to be really exciting. This project has a personality that lives and breathes for me - I often refer to it as my third child. I can taste, feel and touch it, so it’s nice for other people to get involved with the sport even if it’s only for one day. Why should people come to watch? There are some great people watching on the day and then of course there are the horses (not to mention the riders!). Then there is the 10m long catwalk with international fashion brands, all to be topped off with Jason Kerrison on the decks at the wrap party. It is a non-stop visual feast. www.aucklandpolo.co.nz

Southern Hemisphere Summer Living
he flavour this summer is definitely colour, colour and more colour with strong connections between fashion and interiors happening at the moment. Infuse your home with statement pieces of colour, either easily with cushions and throws or more permanently with statement furniture that adds life to classic safe neutral furnishings. On trend for summer are bright citrus colours, abstract florals and traditional stripes that never go out of style. Lighting is a beautiful way to brighten and decorate the home. Lights which also double as forms of art are a new way to decorate the home, while pretty fairy lights continue to be a popular way to decorate and add life to both indoor and outdoor spaces. Adding a few candles to an outdoor living space is also
an easy way to add to the ambience. We are fortunate today, to have many exciting options for furnishing outdoor spaces providing the home with another ‘living’ room. Outdoor corner sectional chairs and couches make an excellent base for entertaining, providing an informal and relaxed setting. Practical rattan that can live outdoors year round, coupled with comfortable outdoor cushions that are UV and weather resistant, offer the perfect addition. Outdoor beanbags continue to be a great way for kids and parents alike to relax on a warm summer’s day. Brightly coloured melamine crockery adds a breath of fresh air to summer dining and can now be found readily in New Zealand. Here’s to Christmas in the sun in the Southern Hemisphere!
Luxe Living A Slice Of Italian Glamour Inside New Zealand Homes
ye Magazine caught up with Director Nicole McKenzie and Senior Designer Catherine Huckerby at Trinity Interior Design just weeks before Christmas. There was the usual exciting buzz to their chic Takapuna showroom enhanced by the thought of Christmas and holidays around the corner. This quarter Trinity showcases a range of leading edge finishes and product options for the home which ooze luxury and glamour. This isn’t about making a quick seasonal change to the home, but rather about making long term design decisions. On trend is understated sparkles, metallics and rich precious metals translated into hard surfaces which can be used in bathrooms and kitchens. Metallics have been around for many years, but it’s new to see to create spaces with richness and texture and that play with light. There are now a number of interesting and innovative products and materials available for hard surfaces. Trinity is excited about a new Laminex product – Laminam. This is a super thin 3.5mm ceramic slab. It
comes in sheet sizes which can be cut and configured to fit your space. Its being used for beautiful finishes in showers, bathrooms, splashbacks and kitchen island fronts. There are a number of fresh finishes available, of which the copper is set to be popular heading into 2014. Check out this man-made Italian product at www.laminam.co.nz and let Trinity help you with selection and application. They have specialist tile installers who will ensure top quality installation for your home renovation project. This quarter we also turn our attention to beautiful flooring that is nothing like ever seen before. Think European ceramic tiles with patterns that can be customized to suit your space and individual style. Sparkle and luxury is added to floor coverings and there is now so much choice for you to create your own look. Special lighting is no longer reserved just for living and dining spaces. We are now seeing gorgeous statement lighting in bathrooms and kitchens being used to bring out patterns and textures. Mood switches and dimmer lighting are options for creating
says “the 1920s were very modern and well ahead of their time encompassing glamour, luxury, opulence and eclectic styles. She explains that using some 1920s elements as a base and then designing around that works well. For example, a patterned rug makes a fantastic focal point as there were stunning patterns that came out of the 1920s era. Dressing Rooms Walk-in dressing rooms are also on trend at the moment. They are Laminex being tailor-designed for individuals as spaces that can be used for both dressing and wardrobes. Everything is on display and has a specific place. Designs are practical and thoughtful with a natural flow from the bedroom through to the dressing room. By designing dressing rooms that are spacious, you can incorporate a central ottoman or dressing table, creating another usable space. Bedding and Bedheads Customised bed heads are a great way to add some extra glamour and detail to a bedroom. “Button bead heads are particularly popular at the moment. You can have fun with different fabrics and heights” says Catherine. Layering of bed linens also adds beauty to a bedroom. Popular items at the moment include silk quilts for winter warmth with gorgeous trimming for winter warmth, velvet cushions, and monogrammed bed linens for added opulence. Winter Colour Colours for the winter are rich and moody with a warm feel and include shades inspired by nature. Think deep inkie blues, charcoals and bronze velvets. Timbers floors are dark with accents of white on the walls to lift the richer colours. Caterine explains that feature walls in a rich dark colour will add glamour to a room. Lighting Lights are important for changing the mood of a space at night-time and adding an evening perspective. Pendant lights are quite beautiful and will add to the look and feel of the room. ambience. Lighting is also being used with water to create special effects. Think ‘lighting inside the shower head’ to light your water stream. So unique! While this may only 17be in a handful of New Zealand homes at present, it something we will see more of as it becomes more accessible. No longer is the bathroom just a place we come and go to, for practical purposes. It’s now a space we luxuriate in. The thinking around bathrooms has changed in recent times with walk-in and joint showers increasing in popularity. Beautiful French mirrors, vintage wall lights, chandeliers and feature sinks create a story. Trinity often looks to Georgi Gregg, a New Zealand Interiors Specialist, for unique and different pieces which when all pulled together can make a stunning space. Turning our attention to soft furnishings, look for amazing velvets and golds, metallic and coppers, and textural fabrics and wallpapers taking us back to the times of French Chateaus and Anaglypta. Twenty Years of Magic! Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park 2013 Saturday 14th December at the Auckland Domain
t’s the show that’s got it all – bright lights, big stars, fireworks and dancing girls, boy bands and Santa Claus – and since 1994 it’s been a highlight on the Kiwi Christmas calendar, regularly attracting massive crowds to the Auckland Domain to celebrate the start of the festive season at the popular free outdoor event. From an idea presented to Coca-Cola 19 years ago to the iconic event Kiwis now know, love and recognise as the “happiest night of the year”, Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park has now achieved the status of the “must do” show. From Hayley Westenra to Midnight Youth, Op Shop to Hollie Smith, Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park gathers some of the most talented, most popular and most able to belt out Christmas carols, popular favourites and current hits to the biggest audience in the nation – via the live shows and TV3’s top rating 90 minute special. Reflecting on the last twenty years event producer John Searle recalls countless highlights including the arrival of Santa by flying fox, by sailboat, by fire engine, in a giant waka, on a tractor and via many other

ways the producers thought would surprise and delight the huge crowds that turn out year after year to enjoy the free show. There’s been giant bouncing balls and vintage bi-planes, snowfalls, dancing dogs and tissue artists. The stage is now double the size of the original and at 22mtrs high, one of the biggest Christmas trees in the land, complete with jumbo decorations, is assembled at every show by a giant crane. Each year the crowds are awed by the spectacular fireworks that light up the sky as the stage fills with the entire cast performing their final numbers, usually a medley of hits guaranteed to have the audience on their feet cheering for more. And then it’s all over for another year. But during that time auditions are held, contracts are signed, the programme is designed and cast, costumes created and once again
he summertime ambience you create with your home furnishings will add to your fun times. Start by thinking about where the sun comes in, where you go to escape the rays, and how you use your spaces to entertain and unwind. Outdoor ‘rooms’ are now treated as so, and with the attention we would indoor ones. Outdoor fabric choice is extraordinary: velvets, linen look, and every pattern imaginable. Most are made of solutiondyed acrylic – the colour is entirely present throughout the fibre. But go for quality because they’re not all created equally. Outdoor sheers as alfresco curtains create elegant separation, privacy and shelter. If you bring your outdoor furnishings inside in inclement weather, indulge in linen- perfect for our heat and humidity. Linen tablecloths and loose covers are great options. Amazing wool fabrics are spun and
the stage is set to present one the biggest Christmas musical spectaculars in Australasia. And just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, organisers are promising some very special surprises to mark the show’s twentieth anniversary including spectacular lighting effects, a high tech laser light show and the amazing Orbwalk, the largest scale special lighting effect ever seen in New Zealand. This year, Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park is supporting Surf Life Saving NZ and volunteers will be selling novelty light sticks and collecting donations to help Kiwis have a safe summer at the beach. Highlights from the concert will be featured in a 90 minute broadcast on TV3 on Sunday 15 December. www.christmasinthepark.co.nz/auckland
woven right here in New Zealand and they’re fantastic for summer. The very nature of wool fibre controls the humidity in a room. It hangs beautifully, is strong for upholstery (advances in technology mean it’s no longer itchy and scratchy), inherently flame retardant, and resistant to soiling. As the Europeans do, have cushion cover and curtains sets for each season, which are treated as family heirlooms. I take down my velvet curtains in the hallway and put a loose floral Manuel Canovas cover on the sofa. I replace some of my velvet cushion covers with linen ones and ready the outdoor sofa with scatter cushions in outdoor fabrics. Et voila – ready for summer! ummer is here and the period when many New Zealanders will enjoy a much deserved holiday and welcomed slower pace of life. It’s also the perfect time to add some new energy into our home and living spaces. Eye Magazine’s office renovations are now complete and we take this opportunity to highlight some of the amazing businesses that have helped us with this exciting project throughout the course of the year. Perhaps we’ll inspire you to make some changes to your home or office space over the Summer. My Dream Kitchen is the perfect website to help kick-start your renovation project, with tips, trends, loads of inspirational images and even a new Recipe Box section to give you ideas for summer barbeques. www. mydreamkitchen.co.nz Moving into the warmer months, we see more brights and gloss finishes in kitchens
and cabinetry, beautifully reflecting the Summer light around the room. The look lasts year round – giving your kitchen a lift even on darker winter days. Melteca, New Zealand’s favourite cabinetry material celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2013 introducing new brights Juicy and Jalapeno and adding to its ever popular Hi-Gloss range. Formica AR+ Solid Colours really kicked it up a notch, amping up the G-factor (G can stand for whatever you like – Glamour, Gorgeousness or Gloss!) with the addition of bright pinky purple Amarena to complement the existing brights, and four new neutral high gloss colours for those who love the luxury look of a gloss finish in a more traditional kitchen palette. www. laminexnewzealand.co.nz Fisher and Paykel introduce their next generation of Fisher & Paykel ActiveSmart™ fridges. They come in sizes to suit many kitchens and families, and are still powered by their reputable class-leading ActiveSmart™ technology. If you’re looking to change tapware in the kitchen or bathroom, Chesters Plumbing & Bathroom Centre offers the following advice: “Tapware installed in New Zealand homes in the 50’s and 60’s is still going strong today with parts readily available, from a new tap washer to a complete reconditioning. However, this will not be the case for a large part of cheaper tapware imported into New Zealand. The durability and performance

All the World’s a Stage A childhood influenced by the performing arts and a creative family is behind award-winning designer Hilary Skinner’s lifelong love of fabrics.
Hilary used Dominique Kieffer linen covers to revamp the sofas in this Parnell, Auckland, living room.
t was a childhood exposed to costumes and stage sets, and memories of her father’s paint effects in her childhood home, that award-winning interior designer Hilary Skinner credits for her lifelong passion for fabric and a design career spanning 30-years. “I was brought up in a home where interior design was always considered. I recall my father creating paint effects when I was quite young and my mother used many wonderful fabrics in all the houses we lived in,” explains Hilary. “We were involved in the performing arts and so costume and stage sets also raised my level of awareness.” Hilary sources many of the fabrics she uses from Atelier Textiles – New Zealand’s leading boutique importer of the world’s finest luxury furnishings. Owner of Atelier, Rebecca Bowering has been in the business for 17 years and works closely with Hilary to bring the magic of fabrics to transform a space

to people’s home and spaces, sometimes a relationship that spans a lifetime. The Mt Eden Atelier showroom is a treasure trove of luxury fabrics and wallpapers from worldclass brands such as Pierre Frey, Dominique Kieffer, Rubelli and Colefax and Fowler. “New colours can completely change the look and feel of a room. It can be achieved by doing something as simple as re-covering your cushions or finding an exquisite loose cover for your furniture,” says Rebecca. “Hilary is there to help people work out what they truly love in terms of interior styles and design, so that the work she does is appreciated over an entire lifetime.” With a new year comes the potential for change and new opportunities. It can be a time to start over and create a new and improved version of your life. Going hand-in-hand with personal change may be a desire to change your surroundings, and your home and its interiors
are the perfect places to start. Your home should always reflect who you are and no one understands this philosophy more than Rebecca and Hilary. “What I love about design is the endless possibilities that exist to express yourself and be creative,” says Hilary. “Without doubt, Atelier Textiles gives you that freedom because you’re spoilt for choice as soon as you walk through the doors.” Hilary brings to Atelier an exceptional eye for quality. Through her own business, Skinner Design, she has developed an enduring love for well-designed furniture. Since 1987, her company has been the sole New Zealand distributor for the prestigious Italian furniture company, Driade. Her interest in furniture is complemented by a design ethos that was built on a childhood filled with colour and creative endeavours. Exploring the world has also exposed Hilary to various international styles and

design philosophies, some of which have been a source of inspiration. “I’ve loved the work of Madeleine Castaing, whose use of exotic patterns and brilliant colour is both brave and magical and Andree Putman is to be admired for her wonderful sense of simplicity. The work of both these women is certainly eclectic and that’s something that resonates with me.” Her all-time favourite fabrics come from the furnishing house of Rubelli. A career highlight so far has been visiting the Rubelli showroom on the Grand Canal in Venice and having the opportunity to explore its rich array of sophisticated fabrics. Hilary’s connection to Atelier has also enabled her to meet designer Dominque Kieffer, whose fabric is now under the umbrella of Rubelli and whose organic linens and cottons are among Hilary’s favourite materials with which to work. A room she designed for an Auckland client has reinforced her credentials as one
of the country’s best interior designers. This year Hilary won the inaugural New Zealand House & Garden Interior of the Year prize for a Devonport living room she transformed using textiles designed by brands proudly stocked by Atelier. The sofas in the room were loose covered in Dominque Kieffer linen and in the same home Hilary designed a study and upholstered the walls using Jim Thompson silk. “The room was soft and beautiful by day but took on a whole new, breathtaking ambience at night,” says Hilary. “The luxurious use of textiles far transcends any effect that can be achieved by using either wallpaper or paint.” She’s pleased more New Zealanders are waking up to the benefits of using luxury fabrics in their design projects. “Many people find textiles rather expensive, which they can be, but they are often a work of art in themselves. I think
more people are beginning to understand what a beautiful fabric can do.” Rebecca Bowering credits consultants like Hilary and the work they do for helping to change Kiwi’s attitudes to interior design. “Consultants provide the expert knowhow which will help more New Zealander’s achieve the interior look they’ve always wanted,” says Rebecca. “What’s more, they can advise on the best quality fabrics for curtains and soft furnishings that have the ability to last more than one lifetime, thus creating antiques to be treasured long into the future.” Atelier n. a workshop or studio, esp. of an artist or designer. A Touch of Elegance
ressed Tin Panels are relatively new to New Zealand, and create a unique point of different in any home, building or business. Traditionally used on ceilings they are now being used in more modern settings as a splashback in a kitchen or kitchen island or servery. Also to create a feature wall, as insets in furniture doors or the front of bars and reception areas. They can be used in a bathroom to line the walls, as a dado wall panel around the edge of your bath, or to create a shower box.
The ‘Pressed Tin Panels’ must be powder coated if used in a bathroom, as a splashback or outside, to seal in the aluminium panels and protect them against moisture, but once powder coated they will last for years. With over 45 designs to select from, you will be able to have a unique look, and cover a large area at a very economical price. A powder coat finish means the aluminium panels are protected from heat and moisture and are easy to clean and maintain. Easy to cut to size and install, the pressed tin panels
simply get glued onto your solid surface and then a few small nails can be used to secure them in place. Easy for a builder, handyman or joiner to install, and also easy for those ‘DIY’ kiwis who are keen to give it a go. Whether you want a modern, heritage or industrial look, you will be able to find a design that you love and gives just the right look – the options are endless and only limited by your imagination. Individual Water Pleasure at the Push of a Button A ten year success story with the new Raindance Select Hand Showers, Hansgrohe takes shower pleasure even further.
t was exactly ten years ago when Hansgrohe revolutionized the shower with the “Raindance”. The large hand showers, which became a real bestseller, pamper people taking a shower with AirPower. This technology was invented by the bathroom and sanitation specialist: water is mixed with air, transforming the water jets into droplets of gently pearling rain. Yet, Hansgrohe would not be Hansgrohe if these ingenious folk from the Black Forest had not continued to develop shower pleasure even further together with their long-standing partners from Phoenix Design. With the Hansgrohe Select technology, the new Raindance showers have set a new benchmark on the market. They have done so in different ways: in addition to the ease and convenience of use, there is also the individually customizable shower pleasure, and finally the attractive design.
With the new Raindance Select hand showers, personal shower pleasure is also now controlled by a simple click of a button. Instead of turning a small lever as in the past, switching between various spray types is now possible by pushing the select button, ergonomically placed at the front of the spray handle. The new Raindance Select hand showers combine two shower face technologies in a single hand shower for the first time: large exit holes where air is added to create the gentle RainAir spray, small exit holes for the forceful Rain spray. A third option to choose from is the invigorating massage jet. This way experts of the Hansgrohe spray research department developed a solution that is tailored to each type of showerer. Water can caress, efficiently rinse out shampoo, or massage the body. “Children often find a gentle spray more pleasant.
Women with long hair need a forceful spray for rinsing out shampoo. And many people want both: a powerful downpour in the morning and a gentle, relaxing shower in the evening. Our conclusion was therefore that a shower must be able to provide both. The new Raindance Select hand showers accordingly offer the right solution for everyone to enjoy their shower”. Pleasure showerers seek to find relaxation under a gently pearling warm rain shower. The voluminous yet soft RainAir spray is ideal for them. Efficient showerers want to be refreshed and save time: the powerful Rainspray vitalizes and effectively rinses shampoo and soap from head to toe. The focused showerer needs the jet to be felt deep beneath the skin: the whirl jet is perfect for easing tense muscles in a targeted manner. www.chesters.co.nz
Select your Shower Pleasure. Raindance速 Select. Rinse out shampoo with a strong Rain spray, relax under soft RainAir drops, or a massage with the concentrated whirl spray! Trailblazing High Quality Eco-Responsible Timber
ye Magazine sat down with Verda New Zealand Ltd CEO Grant Butterworth to learn about his cutting edge business which is leading the way in innovative and eco-responsible outdoor products. Verda manufactures and supplies specialist outdoor wood products. Outdoor decking is their cornerstone product, but they also lead the way in outdoor fencing, garden systems and landscape materials. They sell throughout New Zealand supplying Placemakers alongside a number of other merchants, and exporting around the globe with a strong interest for products coming from Europe and Asia. Premium outdoor wood products traditionally have been produced from slow growing tropical hardwoods. However as these sources have increasingly become stripped and depleted, wood has been taken from virgin tropical rainforests. The world is now increasingly looking for alternative sources of product to ensure the survival of rainforests and to support sustainable plantation forestry like in New Zealand.
Many countries now have legislation in place regarding strict controls around the legality of imported wood which is a milestone to stop exploiting environmentally valuable forests like the virgin tropical rainforests of places like South America and Africa. Such statutes were implemented in Europe in March 2013, Australia in October 2013 and are currently in place in Japan. New Zealand is going through the process at the moment, as is China. There’s no doubt this will be the way of the future as the health of the world’s forests are purported to have a direct correlation to global warming. In answer to the problem of sourcing high quality eco-responsible wood, Verda has developed a number of pre-finished outdoor products engineered with Radiata pine from plantation forests in New Zealand. The products provide superior performance and weathering characteristics, and come with great environmental credentials - perfect for high quality outdoor applications. The key point to take home is that this wood comes from plantation forest, and not rainforest. The
company has two ranges – their Verda Outdoor and the more traditional radiata decking products marketed under the V3 brand. Verda has been around since 2002 and began working on many of their superior wood products back in 2007. They operate from their production and processing base in Rotorua. Over the years, they have gained a solid market reputation for being a high quality, consistent, and customer responsive supplier of timber. They now enjoy a large share of the New Zealand decking market in addition to their key export markets in Asia, Europe and the pacific region, while continuing to receive great validation from product users. The company is 100% New Zealand owned and operated and remains at the forefront of technology with both logistics and optimization systems, and have partnered with technology companies to maintain this leading industry position. Summertime Food and Wine Ben Bayly & Michael Dearth
s the Wynyard Quarter grows ever popular, the most recent new comer, Baduzzi has made itself right at home. The Sicilian word for ‘meatballs’, Baduzzi is the latest collaboration between Michael Dearth and executive chef Ben Bayly, also of The Grove fame. The inspiration comes from Michael’s Italian-American childhood and the pair cleverly capture the essence of a restaurant inspired by family and tradition. Bringing their obvious passion for great food, wine and company to the forefront they create an unpretentious, friendly dining experience. Eye Magazine got a chance to talk to Michael and Ben about summer and some of their favourite things. What will you be cooking this summer on the BBQ? Michael: In summer, friends are always coming and going and bbq’s create a great platform to enjoy a meal with friends, as you can create something from absolutely anything; steaks, chicken, lamb, even sardines.
This is actually the birth of inspiration and the secret of Baduzzi – we imported a Spanish wood fire grill bbq specially and it’s truly a one of a kind piece of equipment. Ben: I’m a huge fan of the big green egg bbq; it’s a ceramic, charcoal bbq so it gets really hot really quick. This summer it’s all about charcoal and some of my favourite meals are super simple, lamb lollipops or slow bbq chicken. What was your favourite meal that your parents cooked for you? Michael: My mother always had a pot of sauce going on the stove, with home made sausages or meatballs always on the go. I come from a big litter so it was “eat or be eaten, where we had what we liked to call the “meatball confessions” – an audit on how many meatballs you’d eaten. Ben: There’s one meal that I always have whenever I go back home, my father makes Weiner Schnitzel crumbed veil with lots of lemon. He pairs it with broccoli, cauliflower and cheese sauce with a pedestrian mash with peas and butter.
If you had to pick one item of the Baduzzi menu as your favourite, what would it be and what wine would you match it with? Michael: I’d pick the eggplant parmesana, my mother’s recipe which is always a reminder of home. I’d pair it with a wine from Sicily; Cos Pithos Rosso – Which is aged in clay amphora and made using 4th generation wine-making techniques Ben: Our Beetroot tagliatelli with fried paua, smoky bacon and quails eggs. I’d match it with a Peregrine Pinot Noir. What wine should we drink over the summer? Michael: I like the weird and wonderful, especially since there are so many varieties of wine available. For example, if you travelled from the North to the South of Italy you could go through an entire year sampling a different type of wine everyday and you would sill not get through all the types of native bottles/wines. I love trying new wines and getting out of that comfort zone and this is one of our main jobs at Baduzzi, to try and
get people to try different culinary wines. Ben: My favourite type of wine is Mcon Lugny Saint Pierne, a white Bourgogne and it goes with seafood, chicken and crustaceans, perfect for summer. What are some quick and easy summer cooking tips? Michael: In summer you don’t want to be spending a lot of time in the kitchen, so I believe it’s all about early preparation and working smarter not harder. I always have a bag of prawns in my freezer, as you can do so many things with Prawns – I could cut them up really fine, mix with some sweet corn, cilantro and chili and I have easy prawn burgers. For dessert you could peel a pineapple back team it with some vanilla pods, making for an easy dessert. I also love to put stone fruits on the bbq as it picks up the flavours of the bbq really nicely. Ben: Something I created recently was what I called smoky banana bread; I made a banana cake in a loaf tin, popped it in the bbq with the lid down and let it cook while I ate the rest of the food I’d prepared. By the time I as done eating, the banana bread was perfectly cooked, as the great thing about these charcoal bbq eggs is that they stay hot for so long! Ph: +64 9 309 9339 www.baduzzi.co.nz
Taking Harbourside Ocean Bar Grill to a New Level
arbourside Ocean Bar Grill reopened in spring after an extensive, six-month refurbishment program that has taken the iconic Ferry Building’s hospitality to a new level. After buying Harbourside in 2012, Good Group committed to a major redesign of the restaurant, with the objective of keeping the traditions of Harbourside that were built up over many years but modernizing both them and the fit out. The result has been a cleverly designed premium seafood restaurant located in an up market environment that delivers a unique experience. A key part of the redesign was the enhancement of the renowned outdoor deck area and the addition of a new retractable roof. Through clever architecture from Salmond Reed coupled with Good Group’s own design input and the support from the Historic Places Trust, a retractable canopy has been developed that ensures customers can enjoy dining on the deck in all weather
conditions. Good Group has worked with the Historic Places Trust to ensure the deck enhances the overall integrity of the building, while also adding real value being able to use the space in all weather. The deck has also had two exciting new bars added to it with a stylish Belvedere vodka bar at one end and a sophisticated Moet and Chandon champagne bar at the other. The refurbishment has also seen the linking up of Harbourside upstairs with Botswana Butchery downstairs, via a new internal staircase, creating a multi level precinct that gives customers the ability to dine or visit the bars at either venue and have the convenience of one bill. Internally, the décor is designed to showcase the beauty of the unique Harbour surrounds and has a refined, paired back elegance with an emphasis on natural materials that showcase the grand architectural features of the 1912 heritage building. Overall capacity at Harbourside Ocean Bar
Grill has also been extended with the deck now seating 80 and inside seating for 120; there is also the option to have these spaces sectioned off to provide intimate exclusive areas on request. The large interior bar also caters for 200 guests (60 seated) and there is a private dining room for up to 30 guests. Good Group’s Group Executive Chef Stuart Rogan is delivering an inspired and extensive menu offering that builds on the Harbourside tradition of premium seafood while also adding some new options that broaden the offering – including a 21 seat teppanyaki room creating a lively atmosphere with a touch of theatre and a raw bar with the freshest sushi and sashimi. With the multitude of options available and exciting new menu, Harbourside is the perfect venue for everyday dining, celebrations and corporate end of year functions, continuing the Good Group tradition of “fun dining!” Ph: +64 9 307 0556 www.harbourside.co.nz

A Firm Favourite with Locals and Tourists
et in the heart of Queenstown, Eye Magazine caught up with Owner/Operator Dawn Sneddon to learn more about this busy little steakhouse. Flame opened its doors 5 years ago and brought in their fun-dining concept. Now with a formidable reputation and a loyal local following, Flame continues to go from strength to strength. Originally from South Africa, Dawn and late husband Grant introduced Queenstown to the tastes of a South African steakhouse. Serving only grass-fed aged Southland and Otago beef, their point of difference is the basting they use for all their meat. This is carnivore heaven with the eye-fillet and the pork ribs their most popular meals. The pork ribs, served on a giant board are messy and addictive and come supplied with a
bib. They definitely have the wow factor. Other unique flavours on their menu are the peri-peri chicken, the rattlesnake sauce and home-made boerewors. Seafood and vegetarian meals are well catered for with the Mozambique prawns sautéed in rattlesnake sauce highly recommended. For dessert look no further than the Dom Pedro - Africa’s alcoholic milkshake. Flame is very unassuming from the outside. Nestled up on the first floor with spectacular views of the Remarkable mountain range and Queenstown Bay, it’s a perfect place to enjoy the splendour of Queenstown. What truly sets this restaurant off is its vibrant fun ambiance. From the action packed open kitchen, to the cocktail barman to a restaurant brimming with hungry and enthusiastic diners, there is plenty
of action. Whether enjoying a drink on the enclosed balcony watching the sunset, or inside the chic funky interior, Flame is the perfect place after work or adventures in Queenstown. Flame also features a great children’s menu and takeaways for those who want to enjoy their meal at home or out on the beach on a warm sunny evening. Flame also has an exemplary reputation with conference group dinners. They offer a wide range of menu options and have a dedicated conference organiser to ensure all needs and budgets are met. They can cater for all groups from small intimate tables to exclusive dining. Discover the unique flavours of a South African grill, a rare steakhouse, well-done! t is said that perfume and music evoke memories and they do but I believe the same can be said for wine (as long as not too much of the lovely elixir is imbibed!) I can track my bubble drinking history back through time. The seventies (yes I’m old) there was Montana Pearl, Blue Nun and Cold Duck… memories of boyfriends, parties and sometimes hangovers. I moved on to imported South African bubbles which were for romantic dinners – until there was an embargo and it couldn’t be purchased in New Zealand. Many cases of French Champagne at my sisters wedding and yes I do remember the wedding. One of the best weddings I have been to! Not forgetting my wedding, and of course the Christmas holiday season. What would any celebration be without bubbles? I have in the past thought of low alcohol wine in the same light as decaffeinated coffee, I didn’t really see the point of it. More recently I have come to really appreciate this as an option. With the more recently released low alcohol wines offering diversity in drinking experience and taste, I have come to appreciate these as an enjoyable experience… and one I can remember the following day!” - Kathy Williams, Kapiro Vineyard - Bay of Islands

Trip of a Lifetime India – the ancient land of mystery, palaces and kings, romance and intrigue, nobility and grandeur.
ntrepreneur Shammi Sandhu has lived in Queenstown, New Zealand since 1991 where she’s successfully run her restaurant businesses in Queenstown, Christchurch and Arrowtown and today, she continues to be hands on with her Mantra Restaurant in Arrowtown. In 1997 Shammi saw the opportunity to take fellow New Zealanders and travellers alike on some incredible journeys throughout India. She’s just completed her latest tour in September 2013, where she’s been met with rave reviews: “Our Indian trip with Shammi was one of our favourite travel experiences. Expect the unexpected”, “glorious landscapes, delicious and varied Indian cuisine and a totally fascinating variety of cultures and occupations”. Shammi is already beginning to prepare and plan for her Sep/Oct 2014 tour, where she will take a small, intimate group (8-12 people) on a 21-25 day, fully escorted small group tour, appropriately titled, ‘Shammi’s India Boutique Tour – ‘Classic’ 25 day India journey’. The tour has a wealth of highlights and inclusions, including elephant and camel rides, sunrise boat cruise, visits to the Taj Mahal and much, much more. Fully escorted from the time of arrival to the time of departure by Shammi herself, her knowledge is invaluable as she shares the diversities of the culture in India, which is shaped by a long history of customs, traditions and ideas. Because of the small groups, this can be done in a more personal and intimate setting. Shammi spends a huge amount of time researching every trip, focusing on filling her tours with hidden treasures that are often overlooked. Utterly passionate about whatever she takes on, Shammi does everything to the very best of her ability, “I thrive on making my tours very personal. It doesn’t take long for my group to get immersed within the culture of India, not as a tourist, but with a sense of belonging”. Having lived in the Western world for a long time, Shammi is able to mix the East with the West with an understanding of empathy and tolerance of cultures and understandings. Her tours are known as being extraordinary, where people can ‘expect the unexpected’. Shammi advises guests on her tours to embrace India with an open heart and humility, and encourages people to join her on this journey for a trip of a lifetime.

Antonio’s Italian Grand Tours
Faenza - Ceramic City
Corale Verdi Teatro Restaurant
Antonio’s home town Massa Lubrense
ntonio Cacace is the owner and director of La Bella Italia Restaurant in Wellington and has an obvious passion; to educate New Zealanders about the beauty of traditional, authentic Italian products, culture and cuisine. In October of 2006 he began Antonio’s Food and Culture Tours, where he takes small intimate groups of 16-25 people, on a worldwind adventure throughout Italy. Antonio began these tours as a way to fulfill his passion for traditional Italian food and culture of his country and especially of his hometown. Antonio’s Grand Tour is a personal one – he covers three beautiful regions of Italy, regions that mean a lot to Antonio, as they are full of wonderful childhood memories, “I used to go with my father to Parma and to the Chianti region to select products that were ultimately only the best.” Explore Italy from Capri through to Parma whilst embarking on a range of experiences. Go from visiting Giardino Di Vigliano – one of the oldest lemon groves of Southern Italy, to Siena – a Tuscan city of art which is renowned for its artistic masterpieces. Group members will explore in the Chianti area, which is most
famous for its wines and striking sceneries; tour Pompeii – one of the few ancient cities that can be seen in almost its original splendour after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, and visit Pastificio Garofalo – a notorious pasta factory in Gragnano where pasta is still made in the traditional way. A day at the beach where group participants will visit some of the suggestive and picturesque fiords of the coast of Massalubrense ends just a small list of the things you can experience on one of Antonio’s Grand Tours. Antonio has already started to prepare for his upcoming tours, where he’ll continue to take New Zealanders on an invaluable experiences throughout Italy, urging people to share in his passion for Italy’s wine, cuisine and rich culture, “I always come back from these trips overwhelmed by the tradition, the passion, the culture and above all, the products to be found in these places…and now it would be my pleasure to share all this with you.”

Building a House to Encompass Your Lifestyle
t is said that building a house involves making around 35,000 decisions. Given that, you have to ask what deserves priority and factor in many variables, realising that without clear direction a design process can easily veer off track. When you meet David Ponting, you quickly catch a dose of the passion he has for working with clients to shape those priorities into truly exceptional homes. Design Director of Ponting Fitzgerald, David allows clients to become the art director in an architectural exploration knowing they have full control. “They realise we’re not self-possessed artists, we’re simply the creative team in partnership with them.” What gets David excited is the energy of the client and the character of the land. “My agenda is to get people to engage with why they brought it, be it the history, landscape or view – and ensure the outcome immerses the client amongst the most poignant elements of that environment.” He is currently seeing his latest Central
Otago project come to life within the stunning Bendemeer development. His client had “looked at everything and left no stone unturned” in her search for a suitable location for her new home. “When she discovered Bendemeer she was excited to find land with such raw Central Otago character and undulating topography,” he says. Covenants at the exclusive 130 hectare property, near Lake Hayes, are quite unique and less restrictive than the most of the Wakatipu Basin. “Bendemeer is a beautiful environment and there is an extra layer of design flexibility allowed through its resource consent which is not as constrained as other areas around Queenstown,” says David. “The site is just so raw and rugged and yet uplifting, with a jagged horizon that demands respect,” he says. With an inspired brief of ‘let the land speak’, he spent two days onsite with the client discussing how the contemporary house would engage with the land. “Together we wanted the house to reflect the elements
of land and sky, resulting in splitting the house into two forms: one buried in ground, the other skimming above it.” David imagined the house representing two gliders, one grounded, the other in flight - frozen in the motion of transition, a dual expression connecting both air and earth. “Obviously there were the pragmatic elements like excavation, structural efficiency and insulation; that there were secure private areas and sun filled spaces that engaged with the sky and alpine peaks. There is also a garage/workshop burrowed into a hill and completely covered by grass,” he says. “This makes the house a sculptural form with functional elements buried behind it, so well hidden your focus is left with how the architecture melds with the sweeping wind or craggy rocks.” A reflecting pond surrounding the house also mirrors the stunning mountain views, reinforcing the respect for the horizon. “We received overwhelming approval for our project, living proof that the
Bendemeer covenants work well. The owners are clearly united in their desire to see refined contemporary architecture in this outstanding environment,” says David. “The height restrictions and specifications in place are simply there to guarantee that homes complement the surroundings without limiting personal style and creativity,” says Bendemeer Marketing Executive Sarah Cairns. “The outstanding home designed by Ponting Fitzgerald is a prime example, reflecting the flexibility of the covenant programme and encouraging contemporary and individual flair.” Not many people have the opportunity to build a house that encompasses their lifestyle, their dreams and the land they want to connect to: but those that do should view Bendemeer and chat to David to achieve the best of the best.

The Latest from Man O’War Vineyards
ye Magazine has the pleasure of catching up with Head Winemaker, Duncan McTavish of Man O’ War Vineyards on Waiheke Island. Duncan who is also CEO of the Vineyard has been running the operation for 5 years now and brings a wealth of industry knowledge to the position. He’s only ever worked with wine and studied wine-making exclusively at Lincoln University. Man O’ War Vineyard is nestled on the shores of Man O’ War Bay at Waiheke and extends across more 175 acres, with over 76 separate vineyards. This is a large operation that is responsible for a third of the island’s wine production and covers approximately one fifth of the island. The vineyard is also part of a four thousand acre farm with sheep and cows. Man O’ War Vineyard has been around since the late 90s but has recently gained a keen reputation for its Syrahs and Chardonnays, most notably their
Dreadnought Syrah and Valhalla Chardonnay. Duncan tells us that ‘chardonnay’ as a variety has come back into vogue in recent times and that their Valhalla is on its way to becoming an iconic New Zealand wine. These days people visit the vineyard asking for wines by name rather than by variety. Duncan tells us, “people are much more open to exploring new wines today.” When asked what drives Duncan each day, he told Eye that he thrives on the challenge of creating something new on an annual basis. No two years are the same and so there’s not a single successful formula to apply. It’s about continually increasing your knowledge base, with a good broad overview of growing and seasons. You need to understand the impact of weather, how the fruit responds, the influence this has on wine-making and then have the skills to know a good wine. Duncan tells us that the glamorous industry is also filled with interesting characters…
2014 looks to be another exciting year for Man O’ War with a string of great vintages and the release of a number of new wines. In particular, look out for some new Syrahs that are set to hit the market. Man O’ War has had an amazing spring and are looking forward to a hot dry summer ahead. 2014 also sees the second year of their new Homestead Tasting Room which lies just metres away from the shores of Man O’ War Bay. There is no doubt, this is a special spot. Over the summer months, it’s not unusual for there to be 500 boats anchored at the sheltered Bay, which is ever popular with the local boating community. Man O’ War Vineyard also sells olive oils and honey, and has recently started operating a shuttle to bring people down from the ferry. Be sure to include a visit to Man O’ War Vineyard the next time you’re at Waiheke. Ph: +64 9 303 9677 www.manowarvineyards.co.nz

Somewhere Between Seven Stars and Heaven
agles Nest is located in New Zealand’s stunning Bay of Islands near the township of Russell – the world’s ultimate marine playground. Ever popular with international guests, the intrinsic romanticism and emotional lure of water is an ever-changing backdrop to this world-class resort and retreat. Eagles Nest consists of five luxurious self-sufficient villas that nestle into an extravagantly beautiful island-like peninsula along a ridgeline that drops into a valley – reminiscent of a huge nest, aptly giving the resort its name. History has it – that ancient eagles once soared the pristine skies here. General Manager of this award winning resort, and also a Jet Ski national champion, Callum Farnell, sat down with Eye Magazine to give a better insight into what makes this special destination so popular with international travellers and why it’s the perfect spot for New Zealanders to plan an escape to. Kiwis often feel the need to book overseas holidays to get away. However Eagles Nest offers world-class accommodation and service right here on our back door step. Off peak rates offer an incredible 50% discount and shoulder rates are also value added and discounted. The Bay Of Islands are known as the ‘winterless North’ and so it is the perfect destination. Temperatures are warmer than anywhere else in the country with a very mild climate that is
conducive to great weather year round. And with no time difference or international flights to consider, it makes an easy vacation. New Zealanders should ask for the value added packages and special packages that include bonus nights. The villas at Eagles Nest offer an extraordinary experience to have your own slice of sea and heaven. Eclipse the villa in Tuscany, the South of France and Nantucket as you immerse yourself in the modern alternative. Each villa is its own luxury-appointed separate entity, with magnificent land and sea scapes each with its own private heated edged pool and Jacuzzi. Eye Magazine asked General Manager Callum: “what really sets Eagles Nest apart from other resorts in New Zealand?” We learnt that at Eagles Nest you have the opportunity to remain completely independent or you can elect to relax and let Eagles Nest look after your every whim with the personal chef services, massage and beauty therapists and even a dedicated on site personal trainer. Each villa has its own gourmet kitchen for those who enjoy cooking, featuring modern appliances and gadgetry. Villas can also be pre-stocked with your selection of provisions upon request. Eagles Nest chef services are a team of highly trained personal chefs in conjunction with the Duke of Marlborough Hotel in Russell. This enables them to tap into highly reputable chefs who operate from an off-site preparation kitchen. Villa guests can enjoy a simple poolside barbeque prepared by their personal chef right through to
an elaborate 9 course meal. It is a very personalized service provided by the most dedicated of chefs. A diverse array of New Zealand’s finest produce is served including the freshest of seafood straight from the sea the same day, and local crayfish and oysters. Menus are diverse and can be designed to cater for special dietary requirements with extensive tasting menus also available. Wine lists are extensive with many premium New Zealand wines highlighted. The personal chef service can cater for intimate dining or larger groups and certainly sets the Resort ahead of others. The service philosophy is ‘Attentive but Unobtrusive’. Guests can expect a highly discreet, well-established and private service. Staff are New Zealand based, allowing visitors to experience Kiwi culture first hand. You can expect professional and highly trained staff. Liken it to being at your own luxury holiday home with hotel-style facilities. There are five villas: Rahimoana, Sacred Space, First Light, the Eyrie and Eagle Spirit. Each villa with its unique name carries history. After all, the resort lies just a few minutes from the charming historic township of Russell and the nearby sacred Maori Treaty Grounds. Each villa is sited and designed to maximize and enhance the very best ocean views, with large windows and doors opening to the sea and subtropical landscapes connecting the outdoors and interior spaces seamlessly. Elegant, simple styling with eclectic, informal interiors. Each villa gives you the feeling that you are right on your own private island.
Eagles Nest has taken away many prestigious industry awards in recent years. At the time of writing, they have just won the elite ‘Australasian Leading Villa Resort’ award (World Travel Awards – International awards event). They are about to attend the prestigious travel award ceremony in Australia. In the 2012 World Travel Awards, they won New Zealand’s Leading Resort. They’ve also been awarded numerous awards and certificates for excellence including many Travel Magazine awards. General Manager Callum is passionate about his role at the helm of this leading resort. He studied with the Swiss Hotel Association’s International College of Hotel Management in Adelaide, where he gained his double diploma in international hotel management and diploma cullinare d’Hotelier Le Cordon Bleu. He has worked in many prestigious hotels around the world including the Savoy in London and the Hyatt group. He met his wife, Derrin Farnell, while working at the Solitaire Lodge in Lake Tarawera. Derrin also works with Eagles Nest, employed as the resort’s exclusive personal trainer. Callum has a background in national Jet Ski racing with international aspirations on the horizon, but Derrin too is a star in her own right, having previously won New Zealand personal trainer of the year. She has gained a reputation as a top trainer at the resort and international guest’s book consecutively just to spend time with her. She will work
in with guests home trainers, preparing ongoing fitness programmes for them following their vacation. So, what does Callum see on the horizon for the world-class New Zealand resort? Well, at the time of writing, Callum is preparing for another busy year of travel ahead, promoting Eagles Nest at international trade events. He says that meeting with key agents in their markets, plays an important role in the promoting of the business. Key emerging markets at the moment are Russia, Dubai and China with the USA continuing to provide a steady flow of guests to the resort. Callum says that when overseas, he is selling New Zealand as a destination, the Bay of Islands as a region, and Eagles Nest as a property. Eye Magazine asked Callum his ‘pick’ from the wide range of activities available at the resort. After all, this is New Zealand’s marine playground! There are adventure sports, horse trekking, cycling, golf, fishing and many more activities to choose from! Callum’s pick was a combination of activities; start your day with a personal chef prepared breakfast before boarding your own private helicopter for the day. The initial flight is from one of Eagles Nest’s three helipads up to the Cape Reinga region via Northland’s spectacular harbours such as the Whangaroa Harbour and the Rangaunui Harbour. Guests will also pass across some beautiful beaches such as Coopers Beach,
Doubtless Bay and the famous Ninety Mile Beach where guests have the option of landing and exploring by quad bike. From here, guests are flown up to Cape Reinga for a private tour taking in the lighthouse, Tapotupotu Bay and the Te Paki stream with its giant sand dunes. A spectacular gourmet picnic lunch is served and those feeling adventurous can sled down the dunes. The flight back takes in Parengarenga Harbour and Great Exhibition Bay where guests have the option to land and take a swim or simply stroll along the spectacular beach. This area is very remote and one of the most beautiful places in New Zealand with its pure white silica sand and crystal clear water. From here, guests are flown to one of the inner islands where they are met by the spectacular 50 foot sailing catamaran “Cool Change”. The remainder of the afternoon can be spent relaxing abroad with a superb selection of New Zealand wines, guests can try their hand at fishing or kayaking from this impressive vessel. As the sun starts to set, an Eagles Nest personal chef will offer a superb seafood selection of freshly caught crayfish, scallops, oysters, snapper and salad all prepaid on board prior to returning to Eagles Nest…somewhere between seven stars and heaven. Real Estate Superstars Sheryl Orchard
heryl Orchard and Brent Worthington are in a successful business partnership at Bayleys Mt Eden, where their individual strengths combine to provide a memorable real estate experience for their clients. Working tirelessly to get the perfect fit between a buyer and a property, the duo’s clients are quick to applaud their professional yet personal approach to all facets of the transaction, which are conducted with a genuine duty of care. Sheryl’s quiet yet determined approach to all she undertakes in the real estate world has come from her earlier foundation of discipline as professional ballet dancer giving her a strong focus on team work. Having lived in the USA for many years, she understands the pressures involved with immigrating, settling in a new community and starting a new life; this insight is extremely helpful for off-shore clients looking to make New Zealand home. Brent meanwhile, has had 30 years in the
building industry and is embracing real estate’s challenge of self-employment away from the stresses of the corporate world. With a practical and pragmatic approach to all that he does, Brent is customer-focused and thrives in the sales environment, where his ability to negotiate strongly to achieve a mutual win-win for vendors and buyers is defining his success. Both Sheryl and Brent have an easy way with people and build ready rapport with everyone they meet; this is a real estate partnership which is results-driven and proving successful in the competitive Eastern suburbs property arena. Operating within the Bayleys brand, Sheryl and Brent are able to stay abreast of latest market data, take advantage of market-leading marketing initiatives and tap into the collective knowledge of the respected Bayleys network. Brent and Sheryl welcomed Nerrisa on board 6 months ago and see her as a very important part of their team. Being able
to connect with the Asian culture is very important for buyers and vendors alike. It’s a win win for everyone.
