Bell Table by Sebastian Herkner, hand-blown glass base in a choice of colours with a tabletop of black lacquered crystal glass or marble. The Bell Table celebrates the beauty of the materials with their colours and surfaces, along with the virtues of hand craftsmanship. The transparent tinted glass base asserts a sculptural presence in space, contrasting intriguingly with the solid frame on top while also forming a harmonious unit recalling the curving silhouette of a bell. With its appealing reflective surfaces and contrasting materials, the Bell Table adds a distinctive touch to domestic interiors. New stock due into Matisse December 2017, enquire below.

I S A J O U R N E Y, N OT A DE ST I NAT I O N . A winemaker’s journey doesn’t start at excellence. But you set that as your destination, and you start passing milestones. You grow new kinds of grapes. You innovate. You seek out new markets, all over the world. That’s what our family has done for three generations. We make some excellent wines, and we’re New Zealand’s most experienced family owned winery. But along the way, we’ve learned that there’s always room for improvement. Why? Because true excellence always lies a bit further up the road, and we plan to never stop. It’s something we never take for granted. New Zealand’s Best Dining Guide

Editor’s Letter At a recent family gathering in the middle of a ‘what are we eating’ type of conversation (which happens a lot in my family), my nephew said “food brings people together”. He said it with such enthusiasm like it was a brand new idea . A simple fact that I have always known but it made me think a bit more about the power of food. Sharing food with family and friends helps us to socialize and stay connected. But further to this it allows us often to share in another’s culture – eating Italian pizza ,Turkish hummus or English tea gives us an experience from another land different to that of our birth, opening our eyes to new horizons and ideas. Sharing food brings a wealth of benefits to our soul. Eating together and talking about the day is not only good for your well being but it allows  you to participate in each others lives.  Studies have proven that the Mediterranean lifestyle is linked to long lives and their culture promotes and enjoys cooking and eating together, with the older members often teaching food recipes and talking about the history of food whilst eating. This issue of NZ Best Dining Guide has a huge selection of cultures. Take inspiration in finding new restaurants and enjoying the journey with others. So there you have it – food is the secret to happiness. Be sure to invite more friends and family out to eat with you.

“nothing brings people together like good food”

Antoine’s 333 PARNELL ROAD, AUCKLAND | +64 9 379 8756 ANTOINESRESTAURANT.CO.NZ Antoine’s is an experience not to be missed. Owners Beth and Tony Astle have presided over Antoine’s since 1973, serving presidents, royalty, rock stars and of course, lovers of fine food and wine. Antoine’s Restaurant proudly creates a feast of New Zealand cuisine with distinctively French-European undertones. It is both classical and innovative as diners choose from the popular Nostalgia Menu or the regular Table Menu featuring daily specials. Beth and Tony take enjoyment in regularly reviewing their menus, which evolve with Tony’s annual overseas visits to research new dining trends. As you ring the brass door bell of Antoine’s, hidden away in a brick courtyard off Parnell Road you may begin to smell the aromas drifting from the kitchen. Your impeccably dressed waiter will usher you to a table of white linen. French and local wines feature in a vast private cellar selection. Pedro’s House of Lamb 4 WILLIAMSON AVE, PONSONBY, AUCKLAND | +64 9 376 1631 PEDROS.CO.NZ As culinary experiences go you could say Pedro’s House Of Lamb has broken the mould. In a world of complex menus, degustations and various cross culture fusion dishes, Pedro’s have kept it simple, really simple by serving just one dish. A beautiful slow cooked lamb shoulder, so tender the meat just falls off the bone, served with a side of scalloped potatoes is a restaurant quality dish that you can take home. The owners know a thing or two about fine dining. Pedro’s House Of Lamb was established by two veteran restaurateurs of the Christchurch dining scene, Pedro Carazo and Iñaki Sanchez. The two previously owned Pedro’s Restaurant, one of the most established and popular restaurants in Christchurch, until the earthquake ended that venture and sent the duo down an entirely different path. From a vibrant inner city restaurant with a full Spanish menu; to a modular container serving just one dish. Conceptually Pedro’s House Of Lamb was a world away from where they’d started - but the one constant was the dish. They turned a much loved meal from Pedro’s Restaurant, Paletilla al Horno (whole lamb shoulder baked with rosemary and garlic) into a premium takeaway product. The concept proved a success and they haven’t looked back since - recently opening their fourth outlet and first in Auckland. Already a well-established foodie favourite in Queenstown and Christchurch, Pedro’s House Of Lamb is ready to reinvigorate Auckland’s love affair with New Zealand lamb from its brand new Ponsonby location. With top TripAdvisor rankings and a loyal local following Pedro’s appears to have the winning recipe. Proving that keeping it simple is a winning formula.

Morepork BBQ 5/1 JERVOIS ROAD, PONSONBY, AUCKLAND | +64 9 303 0477 MOREPORKBBQ.COM Morepork BBQ is introducing damn good barbeque to New Zealand. Chef Clint Davies worked in kitchens throughout the world for 15 years before he discovered his love for smoked meats in the United States. After perfecting his smoking skill, Davies felt compelled to bring barbeque to his homeland of New Zealand. Davies combines homemade rubs and sauces with hand-picked premium cuts of meat and smokes them low and slow in New Zealand’s first custom built smoker, co-designed and co-built by the chef himself. The result is like nothing New Zealand has tasted before; it’s damn good barbeque. Welcome to Morepork BBQ. Enjoy.

El Sizzling Lomito 1/309 KARANGAHAPE ROAD, AUCKLAND | +64 9 336 1339 From the team that brought El Sizzling Chorizo comes a new K’ Rd favourite - El Sizzling Lomito. The Argentinian eatery prides itself on delivering seasonal, sustainable, innovative cuisine with only the best local ingredients. The team behind the venture are proud of their heritage, and excited to share the art of the barbecue. For El Sizzling Lomito, a barbecue (or asado) is not only about ‘eating meat’ but more of a amalgamation of good conversation, great drinks all leading up to savouring the delicious meat that has been grilled patiently over slowburning coals. The restaurant’s speciality, however, is the lomito - a beautiful steak sandwich and a national favourite of Argentina. Thick, juicy slabs of well cooked red meat in a panini with a generous amount of dressing and salad won’t leave you hungry. Nor will you ever look at another sandwich the same. However, for those with a larger appetite, you cannot look past the impressive t-bone steak. 450 grams of grilled meat, it is El Sizzlings own dry aged, high quality, tender and juicy steak combined with truffle vegetables. The menu features deliciously cooked meat from steak, lamb to pork but also offers ‘vegetariano’ option - grilled provolone cheese, caramelized fennel, onion escabeche, barbecued beets, mixed greens and chimichurri sauce. The menu also features a selection of Argentina and New Zealand’s best wines and refreshing beers which are perfectly paired with the cuisine. So relax, take your time, and get ready to taste the real flavour of the Pampas, on Auckland’s iconic K’ Rd. All done without rush, as Argentinians know, all good things take time.

Lee Applbaum on Marketing, Mixology and Patrón Tequila We sat down over cocktails (Patrón, of course) with Lee Applbaum, the Chief Marketing Officer at Patrón Tequila to discuss how New Zealanders are slowly converting to the idea of an ultra premium tequila. On changing hearts and minds about tequila…. Interest in tequila is growing across the world, especially in places like London, Tokyo, Berlin, Hong Kong – cities that have a strong cocktail culture. But in many places, including New Zealand, there’s still a misperception about tequila, and so our first priority when entering into new markets is to educate and demonstrate how an ultra-premium tequila like Patrón is truly a sophisticated and artisanal spirit that’s perfect in a cocktail or simply enjoyed on its own. We have to change the perceptions of tequila overall, as the idea of an artisanal tequila is still very new. We do that by partnering with the best bars, the best restaurants, and the best mixologists who are the front line to consumers. And through tastings and events such as our Secret Dining Society, that’s also an effective way to reinfoce the quality and versatility of Patrón. On Secret Dining Society… The Patrón Secret Dining Society brings together worldclass chefs and talented bartenders to create a memorable and

intimate dining experience, together with amazing cocktails, in interesting and unexpected locations across the globe. It’s a very visceral way for people to enjoy our handcrafted ultra premium tequila, paired with food in ways they might never have imagined. The chef and mixologist are very much a part of the experience as well, as they discuss with guests the inspiration behind the cuisine and drink creations. Like everything we do, the event is designed to be more than just an occasion to drink Patrón, it’s converting consumers to the idea of an ultra premium tequila. We hope all our guests walk away with an appreciation of not just Patrón, but tequila itself. On affordable luxuries… We like to say that Patrón tequila is an affordable luxury. While you may not be able or willing to afford a designer handbag, expensive timepiece, or foreign vacation, it only costs a few extra dollars to treat yourself to a handcrafted, high-quality drink.

Patrón Secret Dining Society at Kauri Bay Boomrock The Patrón Secret Dining Society brings together prominent chefs and talented mixologists in interesting venues for intimate dining experiences in cities across the globe. And for the first time, Auckland’s foodie elite were able to experience one of these amazing events. After being whisked away from The Langham, Auckland, to a secret location, guests were greeted by the stunning vistas and breathtaking views of Kauri Bay Boomrock. Once there, those lucky to attend were treated to a 6-course degustation by Chef Jeroen van Bilsen from Kauri Bay Boomrock paired with cocktails created by Mixologist Jeremy Nivern of acclaimed Auckland bar Mea Culpa. Ninety Nine Reasons Why We talked to the incredible woman behind the event management company Ninety Nine Reasons. Frances (Frankie) Mahoney gave us Ninety Nine Reasons (well, almost!) why her event management company is different.

Tell me a bit about Ninety-Nine Reasons. Events are about storytelling and taking people on a journey. At Ninety Nine Reasons I believe their experience doesn’t end when the door of the venue hits them on the butt as they leave, but continues to resonate, reminisce and relive over the following months. We are all about relationships; it’s the kiwi way! We listen, question, challenge - but most importantly we deliver. We come with experience and advice. Sometimes people have crazy ideas and think that you need to throw everything at an event….you really don’t. A good event is about the experience, good service, fabulous food, great wine, and good company. What inspired you to start the company? I had been working in the corporate arena for four years and absolutely loved it. I was then approached to be the Head of Events for an agency and it just wasn’t the right fit for me. So in one day I went from being on a lovely big salary to wondering what the heck I had just done!

I have an eleven year old son and as a single mother I have moments where I wonder if I am being responsible to be starting this company and not finding another events role on a salary. I asked him the other day if he was ok with it all, and his response was ‘this has been the best year ever, I am happy because you are happy doing what you love’. What’s your favourite part of the job? There is that incredible moment when a guest walks in and their first response is an intake of breath or a ‘Wow’! What’s your mantra? Breathe in breathe out! White or red? Red all the way! Where do you see yourself in ten years? Still delivering outstanding events, finding gorgeous spaces for those bespoke events…and my son to be still proud of his Mum. Harwood Hall: Taking Great Grapes and making Exceptional Wine

Harwood Hall’s award-winning range of wines is well-loved within New Zealand and abroad. They have, and rightly so, earned themselves a special place among Aotearoa’s classic modern wines. Created by their owners and acclaimed winemakers Digger Hennessy and Corey Hall, the range reflects the philosophy of the company - adventurous, down to earth and personable. Digger was born in Australia and graduated from the University of Adelaide with a degree in Oenology. After stints making wine in Australia and the US, he moved to Matua Valley Wines as winemaker, where he later appointed Corey. In 1998 Digger moved to Mount Riley, where he spent 10 years as Chief Winemaker before developing his own vineyard in Marlborough. Corey was born and raised in West Auckland. He trained as a winemaker with a chemistry degree from The University of Auckland and a postgraduate Oenology degree from the University of Adelaide. In 2006 Corey made the move from corporate winemaking at Matua Valley (part of the Treasury Wine Group) to launch his own brand Gem Wine with his wife Meg. In 2008 the boys joined forces to launch Hennessy Hall Wine Company which in part wholesales within the wine

industry and also produces their own brand Harwood Hall. Digger and his wife Debra live on the vineyard in Marlborough while Corey and his wife Meg live at the beach on the West Coast of Auckland. “As I live in Marlborough, I look after the growing of our own and lease blocks. Both Corey and I source extra fruit required from selected contacts we have garnered over our years at other companies. We discuss where we are heading with the style of each wine and we decide how to achieve this, usually over a beer. Sales wise it is all hands on deck, to move the product in an increasingly challenging marketplace.” explains Digger. Comparatively, Harwood Hall is a small company which means everyone is involved in all aspects of the business the growing, sourcing, making and selling of their wines.

New Zealand’s Best Dining Guide

“Winemaking is not a job,it’s a way of life” winter. And all the while, there is a never ending stream of jobs that need their attention from the bottling line to warehouse! “We utilise a modern contract facility to process our wine and have access to the latest technology and analysis to help us achieve what we are aiming for,” notes Digger. And it shows. Harwood Hall has been winning awards both nationally and globally every year since they started. This has resulted in much of their wine being exported to high profile international customers such as London’s The Ritz Hotel, The Connaught Hotel and the Dorchester Hotel, and Tokimeitē, run by world famous Michelin starred Chef Yoshihiro Murata who is one of the World’s Top 100 Chefs. Both Corey and Digger note that it is good grapes and a great vineyard that makes a great wine. They explain that the best wines are the ones that you do the least to, but nevertheless, ensure the making and ageing get you the most out of the fruit harvested.

“In amongst that there should be plenty of sports with our two girls, school pickup and drop offs, birthday parties, dinner parties, late nights, great meals, sunset cocktails and bubbles, adventures, probably a few tears, lots of laughs and catch ups with old friends. I’ll ride a few thousand waves and hit a few thousand golf balls. And you never know, I might learn a new trick or two?” adds Corey. It’s a busy lifestyle but it’s one that they both do well, continuing to produce wines that are not only award winning and internationally sought after, but also simply taste great. “Winemaking is not a job, it’s a way of life,” notes Digger. HARWOODHALL.CO.NZ

“When a wine comes together as you hope, and you see the enjoyment other people get from your product - it is always immensely satisfying,” says Digger. With such a strong reputation, Corey and Digger could easily rest on their laurels. However, Harwood Hall is only going upwards, with big visions for the future. With the growing season well underway and the 2018 harvest looming large on the horizon, there is no time to rest for these busty winemakers. Gluten-free dining programme better for business Coeliacs across New Zealand are enjoying a bigger slice of our food scene, thanks to the growing success of a gluten-free dining project.

The Dining Out Programme (DOP), created by Coeliac New Zealand, has already been adopted by top restaurants, university residence halls and large food chains. More than 160 locations have signed up to the programme, which provides accreditation, training and promotion for businesses that can guarantee at least some meals are gluten-free. “While it’s been fantastically liberating for our community, it’s also delivering significant numbers of customers to the hospitality industry,” says, Coeliac New Zealand (CNZ) general manager Dana Alexander. For some coeliacs the presence of even a small amount of gluten from a crosscontaminated cooking utensil can cause real illness. However that doesn’t mean they don’t want to eat out, and now as more restaurants become accredited with

the DoP they can do so safely.” Alexander says demand for coeliac safe gluten-free food is growing, as prevalence of the disease increases and more people choose to avoid gluten for other health and lifestyle reasons. National food chain HELL Pizza experienced double digit growth of its gluten-free offerings after joining the programme but fine dining establishments are also realising the benefits of signing up. “When someone with coeliac disease feels safe eating out, they’ll bring their family and friends along too and that’s great for business.

She says while many restaurants cater for food allergies, mistakes are often made by staff who were inadequately trained and unaware that a slip-up on their part could cause major health issues. The programme provides an independent endorsement and a simple, online staff training programme to ensure gluten-free food is produced and served safely. Accredited businesses are listed on the CNZ website and will be promoted as part of its ‘GF Dining Out Club’ which is under development. “Tourists are also seeking assurance they won’t be unintentionally ‘glutened’ when dining away from home and this programme offers exactly that peace of mind.”

Give your business the gluten-free edge. Become accredited under the Coeliac New Zealand Dining Out Programme and diners will know they can trust your food to be truly gluten free.

The Dining Out Programme (DOP) While it is estimated that at least 1% of the population has coeliac disease, there is an increasing number of people deciding to follow a gluten free diet for other health reasons. This has resulted in an increasing demand for gluten free products, as well as gluten free options at restaurants and cafes. Even though most restaurants now cater for food allergies, all too often a mistake can be made by a staff member who is not aware of these health issues and the customer suffers for weeks because of it. It is a serious condition and we are thrilled to see that Coeliac NZ  who are  a not-for-profit organisation that supports people with coeliac disease, dermatitis herpetiformis, and those that follow a gluten free diet, launched a new program for restaurants to gain acceditation.  The Dining Out Programme (DOP) is a training and accreditation programme for the hospitality and catering industry to ensure gluten free food is produced and served safely for coeliac and gluten free diners.  The DOP provides education, training and support for the catering industry on GF best practice and it gives the customer an assurance that they can dine safely. Being an ‘accredited’ venue will provide reassurance to a huge market of NZ and international gluten free diners that the venue has made an investment in providing safe gluten free food, and their condition is taken seriously.

The Language of Ice Cream Auckland ice cream chef Gianpaolo Grazioli of Giapo has an answer for anyone who wonders whether ice cream has boundaries; his ‘Discombobulating Menu’. All these creations are inspired by every day comfort foods from around the world. This is Grazioli’s way of paying homage to foods we know and love by translating them into the language he speaks fluently and poetically: the language of ice cream. Grazioli has a love affair with the reactions - the emotions - we experience through enjoying different foods. Grazioli takes these feel-good foods and translates them into the language of ice cream. So we have poutine ice cream - ‘curds’ of ice cream made with savoury, earthy KauPiro cheese from Whangarei and caramel sauce on a bed of Gisborne Agria potato fries for example. In Giapo’s translation of arancini, creamy, crisp on the outside saffron rice cossets a cloud of Italian meringue, crunchy amaretti and silky ice cream. In one bite from the Discombobulating Menu, you take a magic journey to two places: it could be to a street cart in Mumbai, to a trattoria in Naples, an izakaya in Tokyo, or to an old-school Maori family gathering. The other part of the journey is to somewhere new, a place where ice cream speaks to you in a new and thrilling language - a journey to a Giapo state of mind.

Toi Toi Wines introduces A Delicious New Rose

Toi Toi Wine has introduced a new wine with a very personal story, Sara’s Rosé a wine created to celebrate co-owner Sara Joyce’s love of Rosé.

Look after your health with Cathedral Cove Naturals Coconut Yoghurt

Sara loves Provencal style Rosé, which was her “go to”, in her early 20’s before she moved to New Zealand from the UK. “I always thought NZ could make a wonderful Rosé with its cool climate varieties and I’m delighted that the Toi Toi team have been able to create a delicious Rosé that’s even better than I remember from my youth”. Toi Toi winemaker Tim Adams says Sara’s Rose 2017 is a lovely salmon pink in the glass with beautiful aromas of fresh raspberries, mandarin and lime blossom. The flavour abounds with summer berry fruits, orange citrus with a hint of yellow plum showing through. It is mouth filling with a sweet end palate, great length and finishes clean and crisp.

Owner Operators Continue to Thrive in NZ’s Dining Scene It is becoming less likely for restaurants and bars to be owner-operator and are, more often than not, run by a large company that owns many establishments. There are pros and cons to this, with many arguing that owner operators have more responsibility, more risk, and are accountable for every dollar. However, this can also lead to more reward, and a more authentic experience for diners.

Owner & Operators - Alisdair Gribben and Wendy Sutherland.

One of Auckland’s icon’s in the food scene is French restaurant Antoine’s. Run by owner operator Antony Astle and his wife Beth Astle, their influence is everywhere, from the tables, to the menu to the wine list. Being owner operator truly has been the key to their 45 years of success. Other restaurants have also experienced such longevity thanks to their dedicated owners. St Heliers icon Annabelle’s with their award winning cuisine, Pearl Garden, who have bringing authentic Chinese cuisine to Newmarket for over 40 years, Waiheke Island’s Poderi Crisci and Parnell’s Non Solo Pizza. Local bars also quickly turn into wellknown spots, such as Parnell’s 46&York,

and whiskey specialists The Jefferson. There are also newcomers who are bringing the same values to their eateries. Parnell’s Gerome and, in the heart of the city, Queen’s Cafe Bistro, 1947 Eatery, and El Sizzling Lomito.

on the line for these restaurants. Local favourites such as Morepork BBQ with it’s delicious smoked meats, Penrose’s Big Fish Eatery, Turkish eatery Taksim, Clare Inn, The Backyard Bar, Pedro’s House of Lamb, La Fourchette, Tasca, and so many more.

Auckland Viaduct’s popular spot Marvel Grill is known for serving up only the freshest produce, right the beautiful sea views. It’s a rarity to not find owner operators Alisdair Gribben and Wendy Sutherland at the venue, ensuring all their guests are enjoying themselves.

Of course, across the country there are some great restaurants run by owner operators. Queenstown icon The Cow, Wellington’s Dragonfly, La Bella Italia and in Christchurch, Cafe Valentino, Mexicanos, and Protocal.

Some of the best food in Auckland’s bustling dining scene is from owner operator establishments. This may not be a coincidence, with so much more

So, support your local, your icons, and dine at owner operators. Who knows? You may even get to have a drink with the owner.

New Zealand’s Best Dining Guide

our pick for summer

It’s fruity, aromatic and fresh “Sauvignon Blanc is New Zealand’s best known wine and has set the international benchmark for the variety. NZ Sauvignon Blanc zings from the glass; it’s fruity, aromatic and fresh. Whilst Marlborough is our best known region for the variety many other parts of the country also produce some outstanding examples. So what to look for? In the southern parts of the country where the growing season is longer and cooler you’ll typically get a wine that has real punch with tropical fruit flavours and a higher acidity. From the more northern regions where growing conditions are warmer and typically milder the wines tend to be richer, with melon and stone fruit characteristics. Our advice; sample a few and experience the best that NZ Sauvignon Blanc has to offer.” NEGOCIANTS.COM
