ROUTE 1 PRINT INTRODUCE FINAL HP INDIGO TO FLEET South Yorkshire trade printers, Route 1 Print, has enhanced their digital capabilities with the investment in both a HP Indigo 12,000 and a HP Indigo 100,000. Both of which are now fully up and running and making a start on streamlining processes around their factory to support their digital print growth.

Since launching in 2012, Route 1 Print has invested in a plethora of digital, litho and inkjet finishing technology to broaden their offering of high quality, low-cost and fast turnaround print. In October 2021, they announced their investment in two new Indigos, the 12,000 and 100,000. The first of the two arrived onsite at their factory in Rotherham back in November 2021 and was quick to compliment Route 1 Print’s existing digital equipment, giving them more capacity in flat and folded work with a short medium run length for increased versatility and optimum output.

They are happy to announce that the second Indigo Press 100,000 has now been installed and is up and running. The HP Indigo 100,000 is the world’s most productive B2 digital solution with true digital non-stop print capabilities, at 6,000 sheets per hour.

Designed to improve Route 1 Print’s competitive short runs and digital print capabilities, both new machines are now fully

functional and improving digital efficiency by over 60%. Route 1 Print plan to continue improving their factory and equipment to meet the needs of the business as it grows.

INKY LITTLE FINGERS LOVING HORIZON BQ-500 PERFECT BINDER Gloucester commercial digital printer Inky Little Fingers has increased production capacity with investment in a Horizon four clamp BQ-500 iCE Binder from Intelligent Finishing Systems.

Laurence Felton, Managing Director, explains: “Perfect Binding is central to our business. The higher production speed and enhanced automation of the BQ-500 gives us a significant boost in productivity with the same number of staff. We liked the enhancements it delivered over our existing single clamp Horizon BQ-280 system. There is also an upgrade path to integrate this machine with the HT-300 for higher automation should we need this in the future.”

Laurence made the decision on paper. He expands: “Due to Covid evaluating other manufacturers equipment would have been very difficult if not impossible. We chose the Horizon BQ-500 primarily because we trust IFS and Horizon to deliver a reliable product that does what they say it does. We are a long standing customer and IFS had made us aware of this machine before its launch.”

The 800bph Horizon BQ-500 four clamp Perfect Binder builds on the successful tried and trusted features of its BQ-470 and BQ-480 predecessors. Its enhanced functionality includes highly automated set up via a large 12.1 inch colour touchscreen, memory storage of up to 999 jobs, pre-installed variable software capability and variable thickness production of 5mm.

It is pre-installed with Horizon’s cloud based iCE LiNK workflow that provides access to an intuitive, easy to use dashboard that reports real time production analysis for improved efficiency and profitability, remote update capabilities and scheduled maintenance, resulting in less downtime.

It also incorporates new design features that aid easy operation. They include a status light that indicates, at a distance, how the binder is running, and an ergonomic design where all

the operator required actions are on the same side.

On the new equipment Laurence stated: “As with all of our Horizon equipment, we expect the machine to perform to a high standard for many years. It has only been installed for a few days, but we are pleased with the machine so far. Our product quality on the BQ-280 was excellent. Our product quality on the BQ-500 is also excellent. The difference is that we have greater capacity with the same number of staff.

COLOUR CREATIVITY ON SHOW BY EPSON Creative colour capabilities will take centre stage at this year’s Sign & Digital UK when Epson showcases solutions that combine application flexibility with vivid and vibrant image quality in Hall 2, Stand J40, Birmingham NEC, March 22 to 24.

In its first public UK showing, the ultra-productive SureColor SC-V7000 UV flatbed printer, will demonstrate how to produce bright, colourful, tactile prints with low graininess and smooth gradation on a variety of media, including rigid substrates. It features 10 colour UltraChrome UV Ink, including vivid red ink and opaque white ink, as well as an eye catching varnish. Designed with ease of use in mind, the SureColor V7000 enhances efficiency and accuracy with a variety of unique features, including a multi-zone vacuum system that keeps materials securely in place and automatic thickness adjustment to instantly accommodate media up to 80mm thick.

The powerful combination of accuracy, media flexibility and reliability will be presented by the SureColor SC-R5000L. Epson’s first resin ink large format printer can print on a wide range of substrates such as vinyl, banner, textile, canvas, wallpaper, and film with odourless water based ink enabling applications to be used in sensitive environments such as schools, hospitals and hotels. It also produces extremely durable results for outdoor use. It uses three Epson print technologies that reduce graininess and banding: halftoning, fully optimised lookup tables (LUT), and Micro Weave.

How to create everything from simple signage to high end displays and décor on a range of substrates and finishes, including clear film, vinyl, canvas, wallpaper and photographic paper, will be presented by the reliable, productive and media flexible SureColor SC-S80600L. High quality results are assured by Epson’s Precision Dot Mode and expanded colour gamut, using 10 colours, including white and metallic.

Also featured on the stand will be the Epson SureColor SC-T7700D designed for architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) companies. It produces detailed and precise CAD plans and drawings as well point of sale (POS) posters that exactly replicate logo colours. The dual roll printer that offers the highest levels of security together with exceptional productivity and image quality. The six colour UltraChrome XD3 ink set uses a new red ink, delivering vivid depth of colour, and crisp, sharp lines.

The Epson SureColor SC-F500 dye-sublimation printer will show how fast work can be made of applications such phone covers, mugs, mouse mats, t-shirts or cushions. Built with ease of use, productivity and efficiency in mind it requires no specialist knowledge to set up, operate or maintain.

Epson’s SureColor SC-F2100, with heat press, offers a complete DTG package for designing and printing durable t-shirts, polo shirts, sweatshirts, baby clothes, tote bags and other cotton items with eye catching, high quality, vibrant colours and solid whites. It prints directly onto cotton and has a wide colour gamut using UltraChrome DG ink that has been awarded ECO PASSPORT certification by OEKO-TEX. It also prints onto dark fabric with ease as the white ink is extremely tough.

Throughout the stand a wide range of applications – many on eco friendly substrates -- will showcase vivid, vibrant, and eye catching possibilities including banners, wallpaper and floor graphics.

KELLMATT MOVES UP TO MORGANA DIGIFOLD PRO XL Borehamwood based digital print company Kellmatt Limited has upgraded its Morgana DigiFold Pro to the latest DigiFold Pro XL. Matt Weir, Director, said: “It was a straightforward decision for us to upgrade to the latest version. We have been a Morgana user for 20 years plus, and most of our post-press equipment comes from them, so there was no need to look elsewhere. Morgana equipment is solidly built and has served us very well over that time.

“The cross perforation capability was the major attraction. We had been sending that kind of work out, so this machine will put control back in our hands, save production time, and save us money.

“The ability of the machine to handle long sheets came a close second as far as features. We run a Xerox iGen and an Iridesse, so the fact that we can handle 660mm long sheets is important, or up to 1,200mm for special products. It’s another feature for us to sell and for our in-house design team to promote.”

The wholly digital business was formed some 30-years ago, and includes large format production as well as the Xerox digital presses, some

monochrome printers for variable data printing, and a graphic design studio.

The company started life in the print world by producing self-adhesive labels, then morphed into a reprographics company, producing Cromalin proofs for high-end graphic customers, and then became early adopters of digital print.

The Morgana DigiFold Pro XL is built with a unique, open design, and a suction feeder that handles stock sizes from 210mm to 1,300mm in length. This heavy duty automatic creasing and folding system is designed to complement mid to high volume digital and offset production presses. This top of the range model folds up to 6,000 A4 per hour, or in “crease only” mode 7,500 per hour. It has a maximum loading capacity 200mm, and a stock range of 80 to 400gsm. The top fed vacuum feeder, ensures stable production for long runs. Full cross perforation is also available, along with the ability to add up to five inline perforation/scoring wheels. The machine is able to create up to 30 creases per sheet.

The Morgana DigiFold Pro XL is designed to also complement the long sheet capabilities enabled in the today’s production printers. It features a standard pull-out extension that enables sheet sizes up to 1,300mm to be handled with ease. www.morgana.co.uk

EBBSFLEET ENDORSES UK’S FIRST FUJIFILM ACUITY PRIME PRINTER Gravesend based sign shop and digital print company Ebbsfleet Printing Solutions has praised the Fujifilm Acuity Prime flatbed printer as the best machine of its kind, saying it is a level above any other printer at the same price point.

The Acuity Prime printer was purchased from RA Smart – which was appointed as the first UK partner for the Acuity Prime by Fujifilm late last year – and installed in January 2022.

After an initial consultation and careful consideration of Ebbsfleet’s requirements, Adam Booth, Director at RA Smart, had no hesitation in recommending the Acuity Prime from Fujifilm as the optimal solution to Ebbsfleet’s needs.

Ebbsfleet Printing Solutions initially booked a video demonstration of the Acuity Prime with RA Smart. With a pedigree in print technology stretching back some 50 years, and a long standing relationship with Ebbsfleet during which time there have been multiple production equipment installs, RA Smart was the logical choice to find the Kent based company a solution for their growing wide format graphic business.

After being impressed by the printer’s capabilities, the company booked in for a live demonstration at Fujifilm’s facility in Broadstairs, Kent. On site, staff from Ebbsfleet Printing Solutions were able to view the machine up close and witness first hand the quality of print it produces. At the end of the demonstration, Ebbsfleet Printing Solutions placed its order for an Acuity Prime.

Ebbsfleet Printing Solutions Director Sam Cherry, said such was the quality of print produced during both the video and live demos, that he is more than comfortable saying that the Acuity Prime is by far the best printer of its kind.

“We almost didn’t believe what we were seeing,” Sam says. “The printer performed beyond our expectations, but as it’s a new printer to the market we felt it was necessary to go and take a closer look.

We liked what we saw, and we placed our order whilst there at Fujifilm’s facility in Broadstairs.

“It’s our belief that the Acuity Prime flatbed performs at a level above any other printer within its price point. In fact, the other machines we considered that offered this level of print productivity were typically double the price.

“I don’t believe there is any better way we could have spent this amount of money in terms of the overall quality, print capability and production capacity we’ve just added to our business with the Acuity Prime.”

The printer has already had a big impact on operations. “Securing the printer means that we can provide a better service to our customers, being able to meet their deadlines in a world where time is of the essence,” Sam says. “We can provide a more streamlined approach along with a great end product.

“We were looking for a more efficient solution; something that could reduce the time it takes to print whilst saving money. We’ve only been using the printer for a week or two and are really impressed with the output; we’ve already used it to print on Acrylic, Foamex and Dibond.”

PLOCKMATIC AND CANON UV LED COATING SOLUTION Canon has announced that a close collaboration with Plockmatic, a global supplier of finishing solutions to the print and mailing businesses, has resulted in the seamless, inline integration of the Canon varioPRINT iX-series digital inkjet sheet fed press with the Plockmatic DigiCoater Pro 400 HD LED paper coating machine. Thanks to its offset like print quality, high productivity and compelling cost efficiency, the varioPRINT iX-series has proved to be a popular investment for commercial and online printers, and its integration with the DigiCoater Pro 400 HD LED further extends its already broad application flexibility, making it an even more attractive option. The combination of the two technologies means that varioPRINT iXseries customers in EMEA can now not only produce high quality, UV-coated applications, but can do so at rated engine speed in a single automated workflow.

Commercial print users of the varioPRINT iX-series that want to produce business cards, postcards, photo merchandise, book and magazine covers and printed applications where coating adds value, can now maximise their productivity by connecting the DigiCoater Pro 400 HD LED inline. The integration removes both the need for manual intervention and the risk of a production bottleneck and allows commercial printers to deliver applications of a glossy, higher value look and feel and to meet the shortest turnaround times. By opting to use a flood varnish in the production of such applications, not only are the results more eye-catching, but the coating also protects the printed materials against wear and tear, water, dirt and food.

Thanks to the low coating coverage — only 2-4g/ m2 of varnish — required to complete the UV curing process, the print enhancement is far more cost

efficient compared with traditional technologies, which use 15 — 30g/m2 in varnishing processes.

Because both machines run at the same rate, material can be printed and then coated by the Digicoater without compromising the performance or speed of the varioPRINT iX-series engine. And as the finished coated output is delivered at room temperature, the sheets are ready immediately, with no wrinkling or shrinkage, for further finishing.

With the two machines connected via an open SFD interface, the bi-directional communication between the varioPRINT iX-series and the Plockmatic Digicoater Pro 400 HD LED results in a highly efficient, end to end workflow. The level of compatibility and automation delivered by the interface means that the print engine’s PRISMAsync controller can be easily alerted to misprinted single sheets and the varioPRINT iX will automatically reprint them without having to reprint the whole job.

AVERY DENNISON LAUNCHES FIRST VEGAN LABELS Avery Dennison has achieved another market first with the launch of a new certified portfolio of vegan labels, which contain no animal derived components.

Additionally, every item in the portfolio was created without animal testing, or the use of GMOs of animal origin. Because of this, the collection has received approval from EVE VEGAN®, an independent organisation created by Vegan France, which works to promote vegan alternatives in different industries, including food and medicine.

At the time of launch, there are six paper face stocks, three adhesives and two liners in the collection, and they can be mixed and matched according to customer needs. Each item offers a similar level of performance to non-vegan alternatives in both converting and application. Based on converter and end user needs, there are plans to expand the range with new paper face stocks.

“Veganism goes beyond diet,” says Luuk Zonneveld, product manager at Avery Dennison. “It’s a philosophy and way of life centred on avoiding animal exploitation for food, clothing and everything else you can think of. NEW GENERATION XEIKON LABEL CONVERTING UNITS Xeikon continues on its pathway to full digitalisation with the launch of its new Xeikon LCU series (Label Converting Units), specifically developed and designed for the converting industries in high end label production and manufacturing.

Moving to the next technological generation, Xeikon’s Label Converting Units are designed with modular and scalable architecture for added flexibility, cloud connection and full integration. man/machine interfaces give the operator full insight into the progress of each converting step. Operators can monitor every process from lamination, diecutting, slitting, winding, hot foiling and screen printing. The Xeikon LCU series has exceptional functionality and can be expanded with options that increase the overall OEE of an operation – such as additional flexo stations to avoid change over between different varnishes, automated laser die-cutting to avoid die-plate change over and increase turnaround, auto die-plate change to reduce setup time and hot foil, and screen printing stations to expand application range. The die-cutting can happen semi-rotary at 80m/min to a maximum full rotary speed of 130m/min. To contribute to the digitalisation of print manufacturing, the Xeikon LCU series has 1) builtin cloud connectivity for data collection and remote service. THE CAMERA IS NOT DEAD, YET!

Only a few years back, there was a major advertising campaign from one of the then major smartphone companies about how they were changing the face of photography forever with their intelligent camera phones. Martin Christie wrote a very sceptical column about it at the time; however smart the device, it still needs a human eye to produce anything truly creative and original, not just a computerised reproduction.

ou may remember the campaign, but you probably won’t remember the company’s name. Unfortunately, ironically, it has fallen victim to its overambitious technology, and photography has had the last laugh.

Of course, that won’t stop the phone - we don’t even need to use the adjective mobile to define it anymore - being the most popular capture device in day to day use, it’s just that there has been a bit of a reality check on the possible.

Digital photography has dramatically changed how we snap and share images in the last twenty years. Before the days of film, though every family probably had a camera, it was most often only dragged out for holidays and special occasions, not every time something caught our attention.

Moreover, early popular digital cameras were rather basic and the more professional ones rather bulky and expensive, until smaller and faster processors enabled better performance at a lower price.

Enter the affordable DSLR, modelled on the traditional single-lens reflex 35mm to give it a familiar look to established and aspiring users, with models produced to suit various budgets. It rapidly became the must-have gadget, swung around the neck of enthusiastic amateurs, and enjoyed a decade when sales boomed, around 2010 onwards.

It was that boom that was probably hit hardest in recent years when the highresolution smartphones started to arrive; many customers who might have been looking to upgrade from a cheaper compact camera were tempted by the much-hyped specifications of the new arrivals. After all, why carry two gadgets when you only need one?

Sales slumped, and a number of camera retailers went out of business, so it was all too easy to predict the end of the line for the conventional device.

But what seems to have happened is that sales have actually levelled out to somewhere they probably should have been all along, and sales of the more functional, 14

user-friendly cameras are showing signs of a resurgence. Perhaps phone purchasers are slowly discovering they won’t quite fulfil all the digital dreams presented in their promotion, particularly when turning their creations into actual print. So a small, compact, pocket-sized camera is a solution, rather than a bulky DSLR with lots of functions and lenses they didn’t understand.

The upshot of this is that there is rather a lot of good camera kit on the second-hand market for those of us who still need the professional gear from owners who found they couldn’t justify their upkeep. So I’ve been able to snap up a near mint camera body as a spare for my main Nikon for a fraction of what it would have cost a year or two ago.

In days of film, you always carried two camera bodies on a job, just in case one failed, and with only 35 shots in the can, you sometimes didn’t have time to change film and made every shot count.

Digital cameras tend to shoot a whole lot more frames than film ones ever did, so the wear and tear is recorded in what’s called actuations — literally the number of times the shutter has been released, a bit like the mileage on a car. It reflects the amount of work it has done rather than its age and how close it is getting to the point

when expensive parts may fail and need to be replaced. Pro DSLRs should be good for hundreds of thousands if they haven’t been bashed around, the cheaper ones much less.

Not many people seem to consider the possible fragility of electronic devices these days, which is a surprise when they probably contain most of their lives and all of their personal connections. But coming from a position that anything that can go wrong will go wrong, I am naturally cautious.

The second body is more than a backup because I can use it for less quality critical jobs, thus saving mileage on my main one and doing something towards preserving its value in the long run. There’s also an added bonus that is worth mentioning in these disposable days in that all of the lenses and accessories I’ve collected over the years are completely compatible. Nikon has never built-in obsolescence, unlike many hi-tech companies that rely on outdated products so they can sell new ones. It means that even if both digital bodies should fail me, I could still dig out my 1980s vintage FM2, which doesn’t even need batteries to function!

So personally, a slump in the sales of top of the range cameras has been to my profit — ‘it’s an ill wind’ as they say. But maybe it will also blow some better images our way at the print shop counter in due course.

One of the by-products of the smartphone revolution was the increasing use of the PNG in customer emails. This was generally because while cameras produced JPGs, tablets and other devices combined images with graphics for which the Portable Network Graphic was more suitable.

It is because of the way it stores digital information, and the difference between the two is quite significant, though not many people appreciate it.

The PNG has been around nearly as long as the JPG but has only become more prevalent in use recently, and mainly by those newly empowered by the portable tools who know little about the technicalities and care less.

Both were designed to create smaller file sizes at a time when the transmission on the internet was severely limited. Now they are useful because of the speed at which they can be dispatched and viewed. But, as far as most people are concerned, they are the same thing — just a digital file. So there’s no reason for them to know the intimate details of compression algorithms that make them as different as chalk and cheese.

But professionally, there is every good reason to know — not necessarily the mathematics but their results, at least because of the possible effect on file saving and print output. Both use compression equations to reduce file size but do it in different ways. In simple terms, a JPG crushes a file in a more linear way, like squeezing a sponge, shedding information like colour and detail it decides are unimportant. The PNG uses more complex arithmetic to reduce size without any loss in quality. This is known as LZW compression, which can also be used with TIF files and makes quite a considerable space saving, although, unlike JPG, there is a limit to how small you can go.

JPGs can be squeezed until they are almost invisible and, much like a sponge, will never regain their original shape and integrity.

If you save one at a maximum or high ratio (i.e. low compression) which is ten or above, if you are using the numbers slider, there is not much difference to notice. If you slide QUICK PRINT PRO • MARCH 2022

right down to the other extreme around 1 or 2 very high compression) you can find that while a small thumbnail might have enough content to show colours, it will not be able to display them all at full size or, at the very least, will lack the full range that once was there.

This is the dilemma of using JPGs to store files long term, as we are now in an age where customers may have some that are ten or even twenty years old. If they have been continuously opened, saved and closed, they will be losing quality even gradually, like an old copy of a copy. More so, if changes have been made and not saved as a copy, overwriting the original is lost forever. This is why Adobe recommends using TIF for any archiving long term because it’s not affected by continued use — at least as far as we know, as no one has a very old TIF either!

If there is no alternative to a JPG, the best policy is to save an original version and only work with a copy. I learnt this in early digital days with a customer complaining that colours weren’t right from a file that had been printed some time before. Only referring to the metadata in Adobe Bridge — mentioned last month — was I able to spot the smoking gun in that this wasn’t actually the same file, though the customer swore blind it was. In fact, it had been modified several times and suffered some colour desaturation as a result.

So why not use PNG for saving files if it can compress them without losing quality?

Because of the way it embeds details, it is very good with straight lines and solid colours — anything that has a definite edge between one thing and another. The

PNG is less good at more subtle things, like photographs of people or anything that lacks sharp contrast between one pixel and another. While they are both pixel-based files, rather than vector graphics, how they behave when enlarged and printed can be quite different.

While the PNG can preserve transparency and, for example, is very good for dropping logos into artwork, it only works in RGB colour space, which may be an issue for CMYK printing. However, most printers now can handle the conversion. The transparency option is one of the most useful as cutting out images from the background of a flat JPG can be a pain.

Interestingly, many product photographers who shot pack shots and the like prefer to use PNGs rather than JPGs because of its ability to preserve nice straight lines when files are exchanged.

On the other hand, the PNG does not support any camera exit data, which can be quite useful to explain how it was initially created — and why, for example, it might not be as sharp or as true to colour as intended.

It’s actually the best format for exchanging a screenshot too because it’s an exact copy, pixel for pixel, so you can share the closest reproduction of what you or a customer views without the interference of compression saving. But while it’s not the best file format for photo images, if the subsequent file contains a lot of overlaid text, it might be better at preserving detail in that text, which might be more critical.

So it’s always going to be a compromise, but knowing which tool is best for which job, goes with the territory.

PAUL HILTON JOINS RICOH AS INKJET TECHNICAL SPECIALIST Ricoh UK has announced the appointment of experienced industry professional Paul Hilton to the role of Inkjet Technical Specialist, with a focus on customers in the North of England.

With immediate effect, Paul will be the go to expert for Ricoh and its partners’ software, RIP, hardware and finishing solutions, with the aim of supporting complex pre and post finishing sales engagements with Ricoh’s UK-based customers.

He will lead the development of new applications for the large format print market, including sales tools and customers samples, as well as support sales activity such as product demonstrations and training.

Paul brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge from working in the print industry for many years. Reporting directly to Ricoh’s Inkjet Sales Manager, Stewart Cobby, Paul will be an incredibly valuable addition to the Ricoh UK team.

The three who will attend their first Council meeting this month are: Neil Jones, Managing Director of Bobst UK; Kevin O’Donnell, Head of Marketing, graphic communications of Xerox UK, Ireland and the Nordics; and Peter Murphy, Managing Director of Turnbull & Scott.

on his 35 years’ industry experience to give something back to the sector. He is particularly passionate about making print, paper making and converting sectors more attractive as a career path for the younger generation. He also sees Picon providing a useful forum to discuss current issues, including staff welfare during the on-going COVID pandemic and the escalating cost of raw materials for suppliers.

The sense of community and opportunity to join like minded people with a common purpose is the appeal for Kevin O’Donnell of Xerox, too.

ANTALIS OPENS DOORS ON SMART NEW PACKAGING CENTRE The new Smart Packaging Centre (SPC) features a demonstration suite for packaging automation and a dedicated packaging design studio.

Following the initial launch of the SPC in 2018, the company has seen demand for its services grow.

Antalis Packaging’s Head of Innovation and Design, John Garner, says much of the demand is driven by customers seeking to find solutions to their packaging sustainability and efficiency concerns.

The recently opened new SPC has been designed to cater for this growing need. It provides customers with the opportunity to not only discuss their packaging requirements, but to also see packaging automation in action as well as packaging design solutions developed, and samples quickly created on site.

The latest developments in packaging automation, including carton and bag on-demand machinery, are showcased in the new demonstration suite.

Customers can also have demonstrations of a full range of in the box systems in air cushion and paper technology that wrap, cushion and protect products.

Systems on display, including those from Lantech, Sealed Air, Ranpak and Pregis.

Providing customers with the opportunity to see automation in action is a huge benefit, as John explains, “A lot of our focus at the SPC is on helping customers to understand how they can future proof their business. Having the opportunity to see automated packaging machinery working makes it easier for them to understand the features of the different machines and to visualise how it might

integrate with their existing set-up.”

The new dedicated design studio offers innovative packaging design as well as artwork design. Once a packaging solution has been developed on screen, samples can be created — and printed — in the demonstration suite.

ANOTHER 4,000 TREES PLANTED FOR THE YOUNG PEOPLE’S FOREST Premier and their guests once again joined forces with the Woodland Trust to create new native woodland in the Derbyshire countryside as part of the Carbon Capture® programme.

Premier teamed up with some of their customers, Sylvamo, Link Publishing, the Outdoor Guide and CBBC presenter Gemma Hunt to brave the cold and plant saplings with the Woodland Trust, at the Young People’s Forest in Mead, Derbyshire.

Guests from around the UK, from Southampton to Glasgow, travelled to take part in the day and help with this amazing project.

Guests were welcomed with hot breakfasts, teas and coffees; and after introductions from Premier’s Marketing Director, Dave Jones and the Woodland Trust’s Ollie Cannon, promptly took to the fields to begin planting. The target for the day was to plant at least 3,000 trees that are native to the area including holly, silver birch, alder and oak.

By the end of the day an incredible total of 4,000 indigenous saplings were planted, despite a few cold hands.

FIRST PLANT-BASED INK FROM RICOH Brand owners and printer manufacturers can further reduce their environmental impact with Ricoh’s plant-based ink – the first of its kind for mainstream graphics and packaging print.

The ink is a derivative of the oil-based ink created for the décor printing sector as part of Ricoh’s collaboration with German equipment manufacturer Olbrich. It has been developed to deliver excellent rub resistance and set off performance for corrugated brown and whiteboards and carton boards.

The plant oil component creates a sustainable and environmentally friendly ink that it is: • Quick-drying, as no heat is required to fix or dry the ink. The oil penetrates porous substrates leaving the pigment near the surface. This reduces energy consumption and eliminates the need for the whole drying system.

Odour-free with improved food compatibility, as no monomers are used.

• Biodegradable and supports de-inking.

• Not water-based, so no biocides are required to keep the ink usable.

The print heads are easier to clean and less likely to clog as ‘open time’ is much longer. This helps enhance jetting reliability, performance, and printhead life. Low ink consumption is also enabled as the same optical density is achievable using 50% less ink.

3D PRINTED MEATBALLS IKEA is inviting people with imagination for a job interview over experimental 3D printed meatballs as part of a new data and technology recruitment campaign. In 2022 the brand will open more than 150 technology and innovation roles across Europe. DTF: NEW FOR 2022 We are busy getting our heads around the new print phenomenon that is DTF. Our research has, of course, found us back with one of our favourite suppliers who pioneered printing on fabrics back in the 80s. There were some early flops before we discovered “The Magic Touch.”

DYE SUBLIMATION’S DESIGNS ON GROWTH The desirable combination of design creativity and cost-effective production delivered by digital print has captured the imagination of high fashion designers.

English fashion designer and couturier Alexander McQueen was an early adopter of dye-sublimation digital printing technology. He used it to explore concepts, develop limited collections and refine designs.
