Conserving God’s Creation – Shoreham Beach Church Bids for Eco Status

T

he Church of the Good Shepherd has enlisted the support of the next generation in helping its drive to become an Eco Church.

Children from the 10 O’Clock Rock Sunday School group have created a “bug hotel” just a few metres from the beach which is a designated Local Nature Reserve and hope it will become home to a variety of insects.

The initiative forms part of the Eco Church programme, which aims to encourage churches to reduce their environmental impact and adopt a more sustainable way of living, working and worshipping.

Assistant Curate, the Revd Jane Bartlett, said, “We are trying to engage people of all ages and from all walks of life in our efforts to look after our buildings and land and to share the Eco Church messages with our local community.

Other environmentally-friendly initiatives include: • Installing a cycle rack outside the King’s Walk church in a partnership project with Shoreham Beach Residents’ Association (SBRA).

• Developing a community collection for point for the recycling of plastic waste.

• Planting up one of the Beach’s community planters (donated by Adur District Council and renovated by SBRA).

The Sunday School group will be tasked with planting it up with bee-friendly plants.

Revd Jane blessed both the bug hotel and the cycle racks after a Sunday morning service recently.

Feed the Birds this Winter

I

n the depths of winter, our feathered friends need all the help they can get. Long nights, short days, wind, rain and freezing temperatures make life very difficult for birds, and many don’t make it through to the spring. But feeding our garden birds can make a huge difference to their survival rates and, if you haven’t done so before, it’s easy to get started.

So what to feed? Well, these days our pet shops and garden centres offer an amazing range of nutritious bird food: and an equally amazing range of bird feeders. So my advice for anyone wanting to feed their garden birds for the first time is to keep it simple. A coconut filled with fat and seeds, fat balls, or even good old fashioned peanuts are a good start. But if you do offer peanuts, please avoid those red mesh bags, which can trap birds’ feet. Put them instead in a wire feeder.

Water is also really important when the ground is frozen. A bird bath with fresh water is vital for drinking and also bathing. Birds need to keep their feathers in tip top condition.

In Shoreham and Southwick, there are good numbers of Goldfinches around and this is a species that has really benefited from garden feeding in winter. These colourful birds, which always seem to travel around with their mates, are attracted to sunflower hearts and nyjer seeds. You will need different feeders for each of

these seeds. My local Goldfinches just can’t get enough of the nyjer seeds that I offer, and I’ve seen up to ten birds queuing up for their time on the feeder.

Feeding our garden birds is more than just a compassionate act. Watching beautiful wildlife at close quarters is uplifting and good for our mental health, especially when so much seems grey and lifeless in the middle of winter.

So if I’ve inspired you to start feeding birds, I’m sure that you will not regret it. Birds are fascinating, intriguing, creatures that are declining on a massive scale and really need our help. But please ensure that feeders are positioned away from cats and accept that squirrels are likely to help themselves to the free lunch that is on offer!

We meet 2nd Tuesday of each month, October to April, in St Peter’s Church Hall, West Street, Shoreham, and start at 7.30pm. There are also numerous local birdwatching outings.

hat a busy month December 2018 was for Adur East Lions. Father Christmas and his helpers were out and about on his sleigh in Fishersgate, Shoreham and Southwick despite some bad weather. A total of £1470.49 was raised. He and his elves were also kept very busy at his Grotto in Mayberry Garden Centre where he met and spoke to 1,175 children. He also managed to fit in an afternoon tea with a group of local children as well.

Together with the street collections and a Christmas Fayre a grand total of over £3,600 has been raised to help those in need within our local community. A huge thank you to everyone who took part.

Tickets were provided for a group of children from Herons Dale School to attend the Christmas pantomime Robin Hood at the Ropetackle Arts Centre. Jasper, Adur East Lions’ mascot made an appearance as well.

Adur East Lions are now planning various events for 2019. So far a fashion show on 5 April, Car Boot Sale in May (date to be confirmed) and not forgetting our wonderful Donkey Derby at Buckingham Park, Shoreham on 2 June. We can also be found at the monthly Shoreham Artisans’ Market so do stop and say hello.

opefully I’m not going to jinx anything, but so far this year has been relatively kind, but we have a fair way to go before spring is fully here, but at least we can see the first signs and little by little the lighter days, which is always refreshing.

One of the things we are finding more and more prevalent from our customers these days is making the garden a more useable area, but also making it a lot easier to look after.

Whether this be due to constraints of time, with young families etc, or due to the fact that as we get older it gets a little bit harder to keep on top of all the tasks. Therefore, people are always looking for simpler options. It seems for many the days of the fully stocked rose or cottage garden are on the way out. Sometimes it needs wholesale changes to achieve this, but often just simple changes can make life easier whether you are young or old.

One of the hardest jobs in the garden is watering. Without it many plants will suffer and in many cases, we struggle to keep up with it. The first thing you can do is use generous layers of mulch on the beds. This can simply be bark chippings, or more ornamental options such as decorative stone chippings. This helps to keep the moisture in the ground, as well as having the advantage of keeping the weeds at bay. Look at how you do your watering as well. If you have to walk the length of the garden with a watering can then it may be worth investing in a water butt at the other end of the garden to cut down on the number of trips you have to make. Another option is to install some irrigation equipment to do the work for you. This can range from simple soaker hoses that keep the ground moist, to full systems that work on timers with items such as sprinklers and drippers. It is surprising how inexpensive irrigation is to install, especially compared to the long-term effort of all the watering.

Its well worth looking at the type of planting you have in the garden. There is a wide range of drought tolerant plants readily available now. Many are from warmer climes, but they thrive in our climate as well. They have also the advantage of being easy to care for and most of them are evergreen giving colour and form in the garden all year round. They fit in well with more traditional planting. A lot of people favour pots and containers to grow plants in, but these require a lot of watering, so if possible, plant them directly into the ground. If not, then there are products such as water retaining gels that can be added into the compost in the pots to help cut down on the watering and don’t forget to put some mulch around the plants.

For some people large or small areas of lawn can be too much of a chore, both for the work involved and for getting rid of the grass cuttings. Taking the lawn out of the garden can give it a completely different feel and it is not always to everyone’s liking but replacing the grass with alternatives such as decorative aggregates, gravel, paved areas or even artificial grass can give a garden a new lease of life, both in terms of looks and in making it more useable and accessible.

I would always advise thinking the options through carefully and taking professional advice if it seems a bit daunting.

Whatever you do in the garden, my best advice for maintaining it is do a little and often. It’s far easier to do small tasks so you don’t get overwhelmed, and above all enjoy it! Just remember though there is no such thing as zero maintenance in the garden, there will always be something that needs doing.

Save yourself from Shin Splints

T

his month, Alex at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre discusses ‘shin splints’, what they are and what warning signs every runner should watch out for to keep happy and healthy running into 2019.

Many of us commit ourselves to new routines of health and fitness as Christmas festivities have steered us to what some might call excess! We hit the roads in January, feeling proud that we have started our new routine. A few weeks later, things look positive, those celery shakes aren’t so bad after all and the excess is slowly but surely burning away. To keep motivation levels high, we may look ahead to a springtime challenge, be it a 5km race or something longer, or perhaps you just want to push yourself a little harder to see if you can improve your times to achieve a PB. Naturally, challenging yourself physically may lead to muscular aches and pains, especially if you are new to running. However, whether a complete beginner or hardened veteran, we are all susceptible to musculoskeletal injury.

A common injury that can occur when you up your running regime is “shin splints”.

This refers to discomfort in the lower leg, along the inside edge of the tibia (the large shin bone). The main cause is repetitive strain to the connective tissue where the calf muscles and other soft tissues attach to the bone. Prolonged impact of this kind may result in a stress fracture, an area of bony weakness (tiny cracks that only go part-way through the bone), typically within the lower part of the tibia. Initially, you may be able to run through the pain, but be aware - repeated stress will cause greater damage and, worst-case scenario, make your

shin susceptible to a complete fracture. It can be difficult to differentiate between shin splints and a stress fracture. So what are the warning signs?

Shin Splints:

If you run your fingers over the shin, it is usually tender all along the bone. Pain begins soon after you start running, there is a dull ache along the inner border of the shin (tibia). If you ignore the pain it can become sharp and acute, forcing you to stop exercising/running.

Stress Fracture:

There’s usually one specific, localised ‘spot’ or multiple spots that hurt really badly. There may be swelling. As well as pain on running, you’ll also experience pain when walking and sitting.

Keeping You on Track!!!

In managing musculoskeletal injury, prevention is always better than cure. Being aware of the risk factors associated with shin splints means you can take steps to avoid injury. Risk factors (NHS 2019) associated with shin splints are: •A sudden change in your activity level – such as starting a new exercise plan or suddenly increasing the distance or pace you run.

• Running on hard or uneven surfaces • Wearing poorly fitting or worn-out trainers that don’t cushion and support your feet properly • Being overweight • Having flat feet or feet that roll inwards (over-pronation) • Having tight calf muscles, weak ankles, or a tight Achilles tendon (the band of tissue connecting the heel to the calf muscle) Shin splints can be treated well with rest, ice and antiinflammatories. Modifying your training to improve running mechanics e.g. correcting excessive pronation (rolling in of the foot) is also effective. A stress fracture, however, requires a prolonged period away from running. An X-ray and possibly bone scan are needed to make a diagnosis, and in some cases the aid of an air boot or stirrup is needed just to weightbear.

So, if you begin to feel any pain in your shins and associate it with any of the risk factors above, nip it in the bud! Our advice is:

• Consult a qualified healthcare professional to determine what exactly is causing your shin pain. There are a number of factors u-related to shin splints that could also be causing your symptoms.

• Rest – give your legs a rest by starting some non-impact cross training for 6-8 weeks, why not try the pool or get out on your bike.

• After the 6-8 week rest period build back in to running, slowly increasing the miles and intensity, don’t rush!!!

• Seek advice on how to correct your running gait and longterm training program.

Why Do You Keep Twisting Your Ankle?

H

ave you ever twisted your ankle on a pavement curb, or perhaps out running or walking, on a hidden tree root? Ever wondered why after the pain and swelling goes, the ankle is left feeling weak and without any warning you find it giving way time and time again?

In this month’s article, we explore the problem sprained ankle, why it happens and what we can do to prevent it happening in future.

What is an ankle sprain and how do they happen?

An ankle sprain is an overstretching of ligaments that supports the ankle joint, through a twisting action, most commonly, with the foot going inwards under the weight of the body, and pain, swelling and bruising occurring in the outside of the foot and ankle.

What are the signs of swelling and bruising?

If your ankle and foot swells in size then there has been a trauma to the ligamentous and muscular tissues, and lymphatic system, which causes cells and fluid to become stimulated in order for the tissues to be able to repair.

Pain is a reaction to the stretching of soft tissue. If you see bruising then this indicates a tearing of ligament or muscle

fibres, which then bleeds and usually pools into the inside and outside of the heel and into the toes.

A tear is more serious than a sprain, and can take longer to heel.

How long is recovery?

Full recovery usually takes between 6-8 weeks, with caring for the ankle and doing specific rehabilitation. At the onset you should apply the RICE technique (Rest, Ice Compression, Elevation) to help reduce bleeding and swelling in the soft tissues, which can slow heeling and cause more damage.

What can you do to avoid further injury?

The problem is, most if not all people who sprain or tear their ankle ligaments, once their pain and swelling has disappeared, fail to do 2 important things.

• Specific strength work • Proprioception/Balance Specific strength work includes using a resistance band to strengthen the muscles around the ankle joint, which helps to protect the ankle ligaments and joint from further damage.

Simply walking around on it and going up and down stairs, trying to carry on as normal is not going to cut it I’m afraid. As I’ve learned time and time again from treating clients, their problems persist.

Proprioception/Balance work is very important in order to restore strength and feedback back to the ligaments. When you first damage your ankle, the ligaments lose their ability to send the unconscious signal to your brain that your ankle is about to go over, helping your brain recognize when your ankle may be likely to twist, so that you can counteract it before it happens.

This is the single most common reason why so many people re-injure themselves. Doing daily balance exercises on single leg, with eyes closed, or practicing balance on a wobble board can make all the difference!

2018 was a much more volatile year than its predecessor for investors as Brexit and Trump worried the markets.

aunching on 21st October 2017 Apron is an inclusive forum for hands-on creativity, skills sharing, expression and connection. The project is a not-for-profit initiative based on good will. Its sole aim is to connect our communities through arts, heritage and learning. At this time of growing political and social division when many of us feel lonely, isolated and excluded, Apron believes that art can bring communities together and powerfully remind us about what matters and what unites us.

Apron is an exciting new community initiative that aims to unlock the unique power of the creative arts to transform lives. We want to open doors and minds by bringing accessible new opportunities, hands on workshops, informal networking, well-being and social inclusion to the heart of Shoreham by Sea.

Although Shoreham is a friendly, close-knit community, there is potential for many groups to still feel isolated and excluded. Old and young. Skilled, unskilled or between skills. This is their space. Our space. A space to reconnect.

A safe place to come and try out a new angle, rethink what’s important and get involved. A venue that promotes positive change, supports personal development and encourages social regeneration though the creative arts.

A space for all sorts of things

Apron is a collaborative forum for our town that will add real value to the cultural economy. Workshops, talks, events, performances and projects are organised and sourced through local networks and available to key groups at subsidised rates.

Apron is a voluntary project developed by Shoreham resident, Lis Long, and is delivered with support from a growing team of local friends and collaborators, each bringing skill and experience in their creative field.

With a background in visual and performing arts and extensive experience working in museums, art galleries and theatres, Lis has a strong set of skills in producing and displaying a diverse range of art works.

Stimulated by collaborative working environments and skills sharing, Lis is an advocate of the self-taught movement and believes that accessible education outside of the conventional is something to be celebrated.

We have big ideas but are starting small. Apron is a not for profit voluntary project, all workshop fees go into the rent and resource budget so that we can continue to supply materials and equipment for workshops and events, increasing our offering to the community.

ith 2019 just around the corner, make it your new year’s resolution to have more fun – and where better to do it than the Ropetackle Arts Centre, in Shoreham-by-Sea. Our Spring programme runs from January to April and is jam-packed with the best live music, regular comedy and film nights, talks, literary events, children’s entertainment and free foyer sessions - something for absolutely everyone to enjoy…and not forgetting our award-winning café.

It will certainly be a funky start to the weekend on Friday 25th January, when Eban Brown – former lead singer of The Stylistics – performs classics such as, “You Make Me Feel Brand New,” and some fresh soul, jazz and pop originals.

John Bude

E

rnest Carpenter Elmore was a theatre producer and director who also wrote crime novels under the name John Bude, including one that features Old Shoreham.

Born in Maidstone Kent in 1901, Ernest Elmore boarded at Mill Hill School and then studied at a secretarial college in Cheltenham. Whilst working as a games teacher at St. Christopher School in Letchworth, he became involved with the school’s drama productions. Elmore then moved on to become a stage manager for the touring theatre company, the Lena Ashwell Players. He began writing backstage during theatre tours with the company, but after marrying and moving to Sussex, he was able to become a full time writer using the pen name John Bude.

As John Bude, Ernest Elmore had thirty crime novels published, mostly featuring a detective called Inspector William Meredith. The first two books, published in 1935 were ‘The Lake District Murder’ and ‘The Cornish Coast Murder’. For the third novel in the series, Elmore chose a location closer to home. ‘The Sussex Downs Murder’ featured the discovery of human bones on the fictitious farm of Chalklands, in the real parish of Washington. Chantonbury and Cissbury Ring both feature in the plot as do Worthing, Steyning, Littlehampton and indeed Shoreham-by-Sea. In ‘The South Downs Murder’ a character named Tim Thornton is the proprietor of the Riverside Service Station.

John Bude writes “Just beyond the toll-bridge which crosses the river Adur there’s a crossroads…”The book was first published in 1936, so this is Shoreham before the flyover was built and the toll bridge closed to motorised traffic. John Bude continues by describing the service station as ‘about a couple of hundred yards on the Brighton side of the cross-roads.‘ There was a service station on the Upper Shoreham Road that could well be the one being described in this fictionalised account, though in recent years it has been replaced with houses.

When the detective visits the garage, the proprietor describes how the missing man ‘used to take a little suit-case out of the car and walk off up the road in the direction of the toll-bridge. There I lost sight of him, because he used to turn right

along the river-bank and make off up the Steyning Road.’ There is then speculation as to whether the man might have caught the bus that travels the route from Brighton to Steyning or taken a boat up the Adur.

As the investigation continues, ‘Hawkins had swung the car round in the road and started for the toll-bridge. There he turned sharp right as directed and droned along a fairly wide road which ran parallel to the left bank of the river.’ At this point the author provides a note saying ‘a railway has been omitted here in order to simplify this part of Meredith’s investigation.’

Later when Meredith speaks to a driver at the local bus company, the cement works gets a mention too and Bramber also features in the novel. Interestingly local places also appear as character names including the Rother brothers, Miss Kingston, Mrs Aldwick and Mr Sullington.

The book has in recent years been reprinted by the British Library and crime writer Martin Edwards has said of Bude’s detective novels, “Bude writes both readably and entertainingly.

His work may not have been stunning enough to belong with the greats, but there is a smoothness and accomplishment about even his first mystery, The Cornish Coast Murder, which you don’t find in many début mysteries.”

For other detective novels, Elmore travelled to further afield destinations including France for Murder In Montparnasse’, ‘Death On The Riviera’ and ‘A Telegram from Le Touquet’.

Ernest Elmore was a founder member of the Crime Writer’s Association in 1953. As well as crime novels he wrote seven books under his own name, which included humorous fantasy novels such as in 1954 ‘The Lumpton Gobbelings’ about an invasion of naked little people. He also had a children’s book ‘Snuffly Snorty Dog’ published. Ernest Elmore died in Hastings on the 8th of November 1957.

Thinking Outside the Box with Shoreham Beach Cafe Proposal Retired Architect Christopher Harris has come up with his own design for the cafe Isabella Cipirska

retired architect is calling on the developers chosen by the council to convert a dilapidated toilet block into a new cafe to think outside the box – and consider using his ideas.

Christopher Harris, of Ship Street, Shoreham, said his designs for a new cafe on Shoreham’s Beach Green are better suited to the environment than the concept envisioned by Boxpark, the company announced as Adur District Council’s preferred partner for the development.

Mr Harris, 83, said of his two storey cafe: “It has a wave shaped roof and reflects the zig zag profile of the beach huts.”

“The roof would be covered with vegetated shingle to encourage wildlife which I thought would go down well with the residents. It doesn’t intrude upon the skyline in an unsympathetic way. It would blend in.”

The glass walls would be able to slide open and there would be views of the horizon in all directions.

Mr Harris, a father-of-two who worked as an architect in London for 40 years, said the design proposed by Boxpark does not complement the maritime nature of the site.

The company, which is famous for its Boxpark redevelopments in Shoreditch and Croydon, revealed its proposal for a Big Beach Box in Shoreham in April.

It would have a community cafe and could include a roof terrace, changing rooms, and a centre for watersports.

Mr Harris said the box design of the cafe was ‘very aggressive’ and added: “The current scheme is basically a modified shipping container.

“It looks like it’s been imported from Shoreditch and plonked onto the site, without any real feeling for the site at all. It belongs in a city setting.”

Mr Harris said he respects the architects behind Boxpark and admires their work.

“I don’t want to upset anybody,” he said.

“But if they could incorporate what I’m doing, then so much the better.

“I’m just trying to get them to think outside the box.”

He is now hoping to gather feedback from residents about his design.

“It must be as democratic as possible,” he said.

A spokesman for Boxpark declined to comment, as there have been no further announcements for the project.

New Beginners’ Ballroom & Latin Lessons

A

new beginners Ballroom and Latin dance class is starting at the Shoreham Centre on 19 February.

After winning the WDC World Latin Championships 4 times in Disney Land Paris, Chris and Diana teamed up with their teacher Kevin Clapson to start new classes for novices. Their aim is not just to encourage dancing but to promote healthy exercise and wellbeing.

Chris said “Everyone is welcome with or without a partner but don’t worry if you have two left feet, you will be amazed what you can achieve, we all have to start somewhere, Just look what Joe and Stacey have achieved on Strictly.” The lessons cover all Ballroom and Latin styles which include Waltz, Foxtrot, Cha Cha and Rumba.

They started dancing later in life and wanted to do something together so they went to the local dance class and thoroughly enjoyed it. They enjoyed meeting other people and at the same time learning something new and their journey started there. They have competed all round the world winning several major tittles in both Ballroom & Latin and still continue to do so. They are now using their experience to help others to learn and enjoy dancing The new beginners class is starting on 19 February at 7.15pm and they would love to see you.
