Editor’s comment Hello Welcome to the May edition of Inside Shoreham and Southwick Magazine Spring has definitely in the air and cheered me up no end!

With the great weather (apart from the occasional rain drop) it’s a great time to get out in our gardens, so with that very thought in mind, this month, we have the latest garden tips from Mark getting the garden going. Get some great tips on the importance of composting and how to not to do it!

This month there are local activities to part take in. Local plays in the our community theatres, as well as, great films showing at the Ropetackle Centre. You can get more information inside this copy.

A&E PERFORMANCE FOURTH BEST IN THE COUNTRY

More than 96 per cent of people who attended Accident & Emergency in West Sussex over the past 12 months were seen, treated, admitted or discharged in under four hours.

The statistic, announced at a board meeting on Thursday 31 March, confirms the acute trust which runs A&Es in Worthing and Chichester as one of the country’s very best-performing organisations.

The most recent national data available* ranks Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust fourth in the country in terms of A&E performance.

Chairman, Mike Viggers, said: “Achieving 96 per cent against a back drop of ever-increasing demand for our emergency services is truly impressive and credit must be given to all the trust’s staff in every department who work so hard to prioritise high-quality care for patients.”

Last year, Western Sussex was one of only 20 acute trusts in the country to successfully deliver the 4-hour A&E target. Over the past 12 months emergency attendances have continued to rise, peaking at an increase of 15.9 per cent year-on-year in February.

While the 4-hour target relates to waiting times in A&E, it is a genuine reflection of how the whole hospital system is working, with staff proactively managing patient flow from admission to discharge.

Marianne Griffiths, Chief Executive, said: “Our staff have worked incredibly hard to achieve this hugely impressive result, this year helping more patients than ever before. Across the country, 2015/16 has been probably the worst ever year for A&E performance with the national average falling below 85 per cent, so we are immensely proud of the exceptional standards we continue to provide to the people we serve. I would like to thank everyone who has helped us throughout the year by accessing health services appropriately and calling NHS 111 for non-urgent treatment. Thank you.”

Shoreham Post Boys

F

ROM THE 1600s, the local post houses, as post offices were originally known, would have employed post boys, who would have been based there, ready with their packhorses to carry the mail. Most houses kept ten to a dozen post-boys, who went out in rotation. Stanley Harris, in ‘Old Coaching Days’, quotes a set of printed rules that hung in the yard of a famous posting-house.

One of them was 'That the first and second turn post-boy shall be always booted and spurred, with their horses ready harnessed, from eight o'clock in the morning until seven o'clock at night.'

Post boys tended to only be aged around eleven and twelve, but the distance covered by them on their packhorses on the London to Brighton route was approximately 68 miles. The earliest record of arrangements for the delivery of mail to Brighton is in an advertisement in the London Gazette dated 24th May 1686. It states that “besides the usual post nights, the post goes every Monday night from London to Rygate, Godstone, East Grinstead, Lewes, Brighton, Shorham (sic), Steninges (an old spelling for Steyning), Arundel, Petworth, Chichester, Midhurst, Haslemere, and Godalming, in the Counties of Sussex and Surrey; and returns from said places every Tuesday.”

The letters would have been carried in a pillion behind the rider.

There were unfortunately frequent mail robberies, even after the introduction of the death penalty for this offence. On December 11th 1775, a Sunday night, as one of the boys belonging to the Post Office, Lewes, was returning with the mail from Steyning he was attacked between there and Shoreham, on the Downs near Erringham, by a single footpad, who aimed a pistol at him, and took from him three shillings and the mail containing the London bags, with letters for Shoreham and Brighton, and also the backs from Haslemere, Petworth and Steyning. The next day, about twelve o’clock this mail was found hidden in a furze bush, about half-a-mile from the spot where the boy said he had been robbed.

It contained all the above bags, and to all appearance had not been opened. Perhaps the thief had been disturbed, or was only looking for one particular item or letter.

Another mail robbery in the local area was the subject of

Tennyson’s poem ‘Rizpah’. John Stephenson, a post boy who carried the mail between Brighton and Shoreham, set out on horseback on the night of November 1st, 1792. On this particular occasion he carried only one letter, which contained half a sovereign. At Goldstone Bottom, Hove, he was robbed by James Rook, a young man of twenty-four and Edward Howell of Old Shoreham. Although no violence was used, the men were hung on the 26th April 1793 for the crime. The actions of Rook’s grieving mother to retrieve his bones and bury them in St. Nicholas’ churchyard form the subject of the poem.

By 1756 the delivery of letters from London to Brighton was administered from Chichester and route had lengthened considerably, now covering some 82 miles. For those who now had to pay postage fees to use this longer route, its lengthening was a disaster. If the distance of a mail route was over 80 miles, postage had to be paid at a higher rate. In 1765 the rate for a single letter was 3d up to the 80-mile limit and then it went up to 4d. This charge though, was paid not by the sender but by the recipient. People were known to implore relatives or admirers to write less frequently! Double letters such as those being written on two sheets of paper, or with something enclosed with the missive, were doubly charged so it paid to be brief. Treble letters (three pages of writing) were charged treble and a letter that weighed an ounce or more was charged at the rate of a single letter for every quarter ounce.

In a report of a mail robbery in the Sussex Weekly advertiser of 1st October 1770, there is evidence that the mail route had been slightly shortened by missing out Midhurst. It would now have fallen below the eighty-mile limit once more. In 1788, the route contracted still further to 59 miles, travelling via Lewes, Uckfield, Maresfield, East Grinstead, Godstone and Croydon, with a separate ‘Cross Post’ to and from Shoreham and Steyning ‘every day (except Saturday)’ and onwards towards Lancing and the West ‘on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday mornings at six o’clock; and returns on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday afternoons.’ From 1807, the age of the long-distance horse riding post boy became a thing of the past, as mail coaches took over their role. Young boys were still employed for local area deliveries however.

The compost heap

W

ELL I HOPE you all made the most of the lovely double bank holiday weekends over Easter. A great chance to get out in the garden, get some work done and just enjoy the garden at this time of year.

I’ve managed to get a whole array of seeds and seedlings planted and I can almost taste the fruits of my labour, with the strawberry plants fattening up nicely ready for Wimbledon in a few weeks time!

One of the big problems many people have in the garden is composting and how to actually make it work. We go into so many gardens where there is just a large moulding heap of mess sitting in the corner, which will still be there in years to

come, with more being added to it. If a compost heap is done properly it can produce wonderful results, which help cut down on the trips to the dump and save money in the garden centres avoiding the need to buy compost.

One of the first mistakes people make is siting the heap.

Because most containers are not the nicest thing to look at, they get shoved away in a dark corner of the garden out of sight. The problem with this is they are invariably in a shady corner, where they get little sun and heat. The heat is essential to start the process and encourage the micro-organisms to do their work in breaking down the waste. So if you can put it somewhere where it will get sun, so much the better. It’s also better to have it closer to the house, as you are more likely to make the trip from the kitchen to place waste material in it, rather than walking all the way down the garden.

The most important thing is what goes into it and how it is put in. It is important to have a good mix of material. Woody items are needed to help give the compost some body, but general waste and grass mowings are needed to help introduce nitrogen, so good for plants, and to the help the process along.

The heap should have a good mixture and it is important that you do not build up layers of each, like a big lasagne. The compost needs to be able to breath to allow the process to work, so every now and then give it a good mix up with a fork.

In terms of kitchen waste, you should only put in raw vegetable peelings, as any cooked items won’t break down, and scraps such as meat will attract vermin. Other waste such as tea bags, shredded newspaper or coffee grinds are also ideal.

Another mistake we often see is that people put the bins on paving slabs or concrete. If you can avoid this it is better for it to be on the bare soil. This allows the worms and bacteria to get up into the heap and speed things up. I sometimes pop some worms in that get dug up to help as well.

A well worked heap can be ready in 4-6 months. It will give you a real sense of satisfaction seeing a rich dark compost come out of the bottom, knowing it was free and it helped cut down on the waste. It is quite amazing how much waste will fit into an average sized bin. If you don’t like the look of the plastic bins, then it’s a relatively in-expensive option to have a timber one made up to suit your garden.

Hopefully that’s inspired some of you to give it a try and get rid of the big smelly mess sitting in the garden, I’m not sure how many more of them I can face clearing!

A ride to the Somme

T

HIS YEAR MARKS the centenary of The Battle of the Somme, recognised as one of the bloodiest battles in human conflict with over one million casualties over a four-month period. At the beginning of the War the British Army was a relatively small force and was increased rapidly by volunteers with often whole streets and villages seeing every available man enlist. 100 years on people today are the last that will have spoken directly to those that fought on the Somme.

Today cycling is a wide ranging leisure activity but in 1914 times were very different. Throughout the UK there were 15 designated cycling battalions who were absorbed into the Army Cycling Corps. Many stayed in the UK as part of home defence while others, and their bikes, headed to France and the frontline.

Less expensive than motorbikes and used by most people in ordinary day life, the cycle was an everyday reconnaissance and communication weapon in the fight against the enemy.

Of the 15 battalions one was from Sussex: The Royal Sussex Regiment; Local cycling battalions were formed in Purfleet and Brighton in 1914. Many of the cyclists were transferred to other Sussex Battalions.

The pals battalions of the Royal Sussex - the South Down battalions, or "Lowther's Lambs", - suffered terrible casualties on 30 June 1916, 24 hours before the much better known "First Day on the Somme". This was in a diversionary attack, a large scale raid launched by 39th Division at a position called the Boar's Head, near Richebourg l'Avoue. Just under 1,100 casualties (dead, wounded and prisoners) were incurred in a fruitless attack that had no effect on the enemy's abilities to withstand next day's assault on the Somme. The vast majority of the losses were to men from the county of Sussex.

Private John Lamont, of the Army Cycle Corps, wrote home on 15th October 1915 from France about some terrible scenes that he had witnessed.

Saturday we have been continually on the go, biking here, marching there, back to the bikes, then off again to some other part of the line, a few hours there, then off again to some other part, and so the time has gone in, with hardly a warm meal, very little sleep, until today we have been left to ourselves.

Indeed, it has not been much of a rest, as we have all our clothing, equipment, rifle and bicycle to clean, but we don’t take that into account, and just smile through it all.

By the time this reaches you I suppose you will be reading some details of the titanic battle which is raging here. We have taken our share in it, and now, as I have time to think, I am actually surprised to find myself with a whole skin. However great the British losses are, the German losses are bound to be twice the amount, not to say anything about prisoners of which I have seen hundreds in these last three days. The scenes were awful, too ghastly for description, but they will remain forever stamped on the mind.”

The Ride

Ride to the Somme is a 3 day cycle over 200 miles which will culminate by paying respects at The Memorial to the Missing of the Somme at Thiepval which lists the 72,195 missing British and African soldiers that have no known grave. We will also pay specific respects to members of the Army Cycling Corps who are commemorated at the nearby cemetery in Pozieres.

When riders enlist they will be asked to report on the 31st August to the

“recruiting centre” which will be the Imperial War Museum and from there will cycle in Northern France and in particular, on the last day, visit locations where their ancestors will have fought.

Such an event is an ideal opportunity to raise money for an appropriate charity and we will be working with SSAFA who played a crucial role in World War I supporting families and soldiers upon their return home.

SSAFA are the longest serving national tri-service military charity. For 130 years, they have provided lifelong support to those who are serving or have ever served in our Armed Forces.

Today nearly five million people living in the United Kingdom are estimated to have served in the Armed Forces at some point in their lives. Every year, around 20,000 servicemen and women leave the services and return to civilian life.

Their support covers both Regulars and Reserves in the British Army, the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force and their families, including anyone who has completed National Service. They are all entitled to lifelong support from SSAFA, no matter how long they have served.

Every year they support 50,000 people.

The are liaising closely with the Imperial War Museum London and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Bounce back quickly from Shin Splints This month, following on from the theme of running and Marathons, Louis Jones takes a look at the common injury Shin Splints.

What are Shin Splints?

Medial tibial stress syndrome, better known as shin splints, is a painful condition to the inside of your shins, made worse by high impact activities such as walking with heavy back packs, running or dancing. There are 2 distinct types, which affect specific tissues of the shin: 1. Type One: Due to a stress reaction to the inside border of the

shin bone.

What causes it?

1. With most injuries the RICE method in the acute stages can be very beneficial.

R = Rest the area I = Ice the area to reduce swelling and inflammation C = Compress the area to help support the injury and help improve circulation E = Elevate the area to help reduce swelling 2. After this initial period if you are still suffering with pain or discomfort, which worsens with activity, then you should consult and physiotherapist.

3. Anti-inflammatory gels can be good for massaging into the painful area.

4. When you consult a physiotherapist, they will be able to advise you on correcting poor biomechanics, and exercises to help strengthen weak areas of the body.

5. Orthotics (insoles) can be helpful to help with poor mechanics.

6. Refraining from high impact exercise and doing low impact activity such as cycling or swimming can be a great way to maintain fitness until your condition has settled.

OUTHWICK OPERA IS very pleased to announce its production of Cole Porter’s delightful musical ANYTHING GOES at the Barn Theatre in May. The story is set aboard the ocean liner SS American where Reno Sweeney is en route from New York to England. Her pal Billy Crocker has stowed away to be near his love, Hope Harcourt, but the problem is Hope is engaged to the wealthy Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. Joining this love triangle on board the luxury liner are Moonface Martin – public enemy number 1 – and his sidekick-in-crime Erma. With the help of some elaborate disguises, tap dancing sailors and good oldfashioned blackmail, Reno and Martin join forces to help Billy in his quest to win Hope’s heart.

Director/Conductor SIMON GRAY has assembled a first rate cast for this production. “We are delighted with our cast” says Simon, “and so pleased to announce that the role of Reno Sweeney will be played by Lucy Newton who has a wealth of professional experience, appearing in touring and West End musicals. Her sister Tania Newton, currently appearing in “Mrs Henderson Presents” at the Noel Coward Theatre, played Sally in our production of “Follies” in 2013, so we are keeping it in the family!”

LUCY NEWTON has appeared as Eponine in “Les Miserables” at the Palace Theatre and Glinda in “Wicked” at the Apollo Victoria. She was also in the original cast of the Boy George musical “Taboo”, and “Pricilla, Queen of the Desert” – also at the Palace Theatre.

JORDAN SOUTHWELL trained at the Sylvia Young Theatre School and is enjoying a successful career including roles in Doctor Who on TV and “Oliver!” at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Jordan says “I am thrilled to be playing cheeky chappy Billy Crocker – it should be a good laugh!”

GRACE RIACH who plays Erma says “I am very excited to be back on stage with Southwick Opera after appearing with the 20

company in “Follies” back in 2013. I love the character of Erma, her humour and light-hearted ways, and I can’t wait to get tapping again!”

JAMIE COLLINS has been involved in local theatre since he was 5 years old subsequently playing roles such as Sky in “Guys & Dolls”, Tony in “Copacabana” and Nicky in “Avenue Q”. Jamie says “Playing Moonface Martin, public enemy number 13 is certainly bringing out the stupid crook in me and I am loving working with such a wonderful production team and cast.

TESSA PHIPPARD (Hope Harcourt) is singing with Southwick Opera for the first time. Classically trained from the age of ten, she has appeared in several musicals locally including “Avenue Q” and “My Fair Lady” at the Theatre Royal.

CIARAN KIELY who plays Elisha Whitney says “I have appeared in local productions for nearly twenty years but never before with Southwick Opera. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to appear in this great Cole Porter show at the Barn Theatre”.

JANE PEMBERTON who plays Evangeline Harcourt, is a regular performer with Southwick Opera playing roles in “Titanic – the musical” and in “Follies” amongst many others.

Jane says “I am looking forward to being reunited with canine actor “Sparrow” who appears as Mrs Harcourt’s dog and was previously my fellow actor in Titanic!” Other roles are played

SOUTHWICK CAMERA CLUB

The club meets at Southwick Community Centre, Southwick Street, West Sussex, BN42 4TE. At 7.30pm every Thurs day from September to May. Membership is open to anyone interested in photography at any level, from beginners to experienced. We are a friendly group and meetings are informal and include workshops on camera and image techniques as well as talks by experienced photographers.
