Editor’s comment Welcome to the March Edition of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick Magazine.

Well it’s official – this is the wettest winter on record, and as March is the last month of winter, we can look forward to spring arriving soon. This month our gardening expert, Mark Oakley, discusses what happened in our gardens after the winds and rain in recent months and prepares us for what we can do in March to get the best out of them.

In this issue we have lots for you to read and update you on with regards to the Shoreham and Southwick area. There is the Shoreham Harbour regeneration plans which you can read on page 20. We have Judy Upton’s latest piece on playing marbles.

There are several local charity activities this month from the Open Day at the Dogs Trust on the 25th March, The Great Spring Bake by the Lions International Blood Research Appeal on the 22nd of March and, on the 30th of March, the Friends of Shoreham are having a beach clean. Funding available The Great for voluntary Spring Bake organisations

OLUNTARY AND COMMUNITY organisations in West Sussex are being encouraged to apply for a share of £190,000. The application process for West Sussex County Council’s Prevention and Wellbeing Grants Programme is now open.

It aims to help innovative, community-based activities for residents, which are designed to enable adults and older people to get out and about, make friends and see others.

Grants of up to £5,000 are available and the closing date for applications is Thursday, April 17 2014.

Last year, awards ranged between under £50 and £5,000 and were used for a number of different projects, including tea and chat groups, choirs and fitness and learning activities.

Christine Field, Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, said: “The Prevention and Wellbeing Grants Programme was designed to help community-based services and organisations to support the social aspects of people’s lives.

“These types of organisations play a vital role in helping to reduce isolation and they can help to maintain an older person’s independence for longer.

“Small or large projects can apply and I would encourage any group who thinks they might be able to benefit from this funding to find out more.”

The applications will be assessed by the County Local Committees. Organisations will be notified of decisions and receive payments in August 2014.

The grants are not available for services or activities designed for Children and People with Learning Disabilities.

Pip is looking for a home

AOMI TUCKER FROM the Dogs Trust visited Santander, in Shoreham High Street, to be welcomed by staff members James Wingate (Mortgage Advisor), Clare Watson (Branch Manager) and Nicola Burrows.

Naomi brought in Pip, who is a two-and-a-halfyear old border collie cross and is looking for a home. Pip has a lovely friendly nature, loves to play and be scratched behind the ears.

The Dogs Trust are always looking for donations as well as volunteers to help. Not just walking and playing with the dogs, but also to help in the kennels, laundry, home visits as foster parents for dogs that don’t get on well in kennel conditions and of course organising fund raising events.

On Sunday 25th of May the Dogs Trust will have an open day with activities at the Shoreham recreational ground. They currently have 70 dogs at the Shoreham home. Infact, this is one of their medium sized centres out of 19 across the country. They re-home approximately 15/16 dogs a month and last year found new homes for over 400 dogs.

Where should I invest my money?

T

HE INTEREST RATES have been so low over the past few years that savers have really suffered. Many are at a loss as to where to invest their money, trawling the high street for higher rates or looking online. People have become more astute and inventive, making sure they use their cash ISA allowances each year, carefully spreading their money amongst several banks and building societies.

The providers have become clever with their marketing, offering high rates for a certain balance, or a certain period of time, but all this needs diligence! You should be careful of rate end dates or investing over the limit, the terms may not be so attractive. To keep the best rates for your money is hard work and you need to keep on the ball.

Sometimes people get a sudden inheritance, or sell a property ending up with a large lump sum. This is when they can become confused about where to invest. There are only so many financial institutions and with a limit of ÂŁ85,000 with each covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS), it is easy to get stumped.

PLAYING MARBLES A N OLD CUSTOM practised in Sussex communities involved games of marbles, which would be played for a season of forty five days, by children and adults alike. In the 19th century this season began on Ash Wednesday and ended at 12 noon on Good Friday. Good Friday (and in some places Ash Wednesday) were known as ‘Marbles Day’.

During Lent, toyshops in Shoreham and Southwick would have had windows full of tops, skipping ropes, hoops and marbles. Marbles at this time could be small balls of clay, stone or glass.

In 1883, in Brighton, a fisherman, Mr James Rolf, told how the fishermen commenced to play on Ash Wednesday in strict accordance with the traditional custom. In Hove there was a superstition that it was “Gobblins” on Good Friday if marbles were still being played after the appointed time. In Shoreham, Mill Hill was often known as Good Friday Hill, but it was not marbles but eggs and oranges that children rolled like bowls down its steep sides in a game. Other games and amusements in the town itself however did include the more traditional marbles.

The Rev W. D. Parish wrote in 1879 about the game as played at Selmeston, East Sussex, “I always wondered why so many people in the country districts of Sussex should devote themselves to marbles on Good Friday, till I discovered that the marble season is strictly defined between Ash Wednesday and Good Friday; and on the last day of the season it seems to be the object of every man and boy to play marbles as much as possible: they will play in the road at the church gate till the very last moment before service, and begin again the instant they are out of church. There is evidently a

custom besides a pastime in this case.

Persons play at marbles on Good Friday who would never think of playing on any other day; and it seems more over to be regarded as an amusement permissible on a holy day, Is it possible that it was appointed as a Lenten sport, to keep people from more boisterous and mischievous enjoyments?”

At Cuckfield in the 1880’s, Good Friday was known as ‘Marble Day’. S. M. Kingsley wrote in 1879. ‘It is the custom here on that day for men and boys of all ages to play marbles and on a remark being made to an old woman about it she replied’ “Don’t you know its marble day?” An old inhabitant of Cuckfield told Miss Lillian Candlin that her father had played on the south side of the churchyard in about 1876 and that previously to that they had played right inside the church porch.

Marbles were for many years used as stoppers the necks of glass bottles, which gave the local children a free supply of the little glass balls, once they had broken the bottles. In the 1960’s there was still much marble playing in and around Worthing, and the local RAFA club had its own tournaments at Durrington. At first a team went up to Tinsley Green, where championships

were held. On Good Friday 1964 the Worthing Typhoons played at this event but were unfortunately knocked out in the first round. Joe Beckett had the highest score for the team and went on to be beaten by Len Smith in the individual championships. Two years later saw the first ever Worthing tournament, which was held at the Goring Recreation Ground with eight teams taking part.

A problem at Worthing was finding a sufficient number of clay marbles. A man recorded how they “searched everywhere and finally got round it by substituting painted aniseed balls.” In the 1970s the annual tournament was for a time played on Broadwater Green.

Not everyone approved of marble games on Good Friday. In 1879 a Sussex vicar recorded that his parishoners continued their game at the gate of the church until the last possible moment before the service began, and as soon as the service was over they all rushed back outside to resume the game. A few places like Alciston have recently revived the Good Friday marble games and hopefully it is something that may again, with the resurgence of older pastimes, become popular in our area.

HILST I WOULD normally talk about looking forward to the lighter evenings and the clocks changing at this time of year, I think in light of the horrendous run of bad weather we have had its important to look at the effect it has had Without doubt it has been pretty much the worst time in the garden I can recall, with a combination of high winds and the

prolonged rainfall. Some of the effects have been all too obvious with damage to fences, structures and trees in the garden. If you have any doubts about the safety of any trees then don’t hesitate to get an expert in to asses it. A lot of trees are suffering from the problem of the ground being so soft that the roots are literally being pulled out as the wind acts as a lever at the top. In a lot of instances as the ground starts to dry out, the problem will pass, but some may be too far gone. With smaller trees and shrubs that have suffered from this, they can be re-staked for support and re-heeled into the ground as it becomes firmer to give it more support.

We have been inundated with calls for damaged fences, as have every landscaper I know. Fences have suffered in much the same way as it has affected the trees. When you come to have the damage repaired, or the fence replaced, take a good hard look at the type of fence you have and whether it would be better to replace with something more substantial and suitable to the garden and its position. It really is a more cost effective plan in the long run, than paying out to replace a broken fence with the same type in a windy location that will go the same way of the first in a short time. If you do have any damage to the fences then in the short term do your best to brace it up, or remove any broken panels to avoid further damage to the remaining fence.

With regards the large amount of rainfall we have had, luckily in most areas we are fortunate to have reasonably good drainage and flooding has not been an issue, but nevertheless the ground is absolutely sodden. If you can avoid keep walking over it, to stop it becoming to damaged and compacted. Most plants will be okay even after the time they have had. If you have an area that has been badly affected by bad drainage then look to open the ground up by forking it and adding additional compost in as the ground dries out. Don’t be too worried about planting new things in the garden yet, nothing will suffer for being planted a few weeks late.

As bad as it’s been, with most things in the garden mother nature has a way of recovering very quickly, and after a few dry weeks, and when the damage has been repaired, it should be back to business as usual, but let’s keep our fingers crossed for some sunshine now.

ACK ACHE, ESPECIALLY when chronic can have a considerable impact on the quality of a person’s life and is one of the main reasons for work related sickness absence.

(British Acupuncture Council 2013) The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence guidelines on best practice now recommend that GPs offer acupuncture as a first line treatment for persistent, non-specific low back pain.

Try this simple ‘lumbar rub’ to promote blood and energy flow in the lower back, which relieves and prevents pain and stiffness in this area.

1. Stand with feet parallel, shoulder width apart. Sink weight down into legs.

2. Rub hands together briskly until they feel hot and place them on your lower

back, either side of your spine.

3. Rub up and down your lower back and sacrum with fairly firm strokes for 1-2 minutes. If your hands or arms get sore, briefly stop - but leave your hands on your back to keep the heat in - then continue.

This exercise can be done morning and night, or as part of your sports warm up exercises.

A DRIVING DISTRACTION

O

UR ADDICTIVE RELATIONSHIP with the gadget has grown in proportion to the apps we rely on to direct our daily lives — not all of which are to our benefit.

The dangers of using a mobile while driving are well documented and do attract a £60 fine, three penalty points and higher insurance premiums.

Yet new research reveals that despite the practice being illegal since 2003, three quarters of British drivers see others using mobile phones on some or most journeys, while a quarter spot drivers using their mobile on every trip.

And it’s not just talking that’s the problem — some drivers are texting, emailing, Tweeting, updating their social networks or taking photographs on the move.

The AA/Populus poll of nearly 21,000 drivers found 42 per cent say they used a hand-held phone in the car even though nearly two thirds admitted it distracted them from driving.

Some 20 per cent confessed to texting behind the steering wheel, four per cent admit to checking emails and two per cent have sent emails or read Twitter or Facebook updates on the move.

Another worrying and morbid development is the advent of “digital rubber neckers” — drivers who feel the need to use their phones to film or photograph serious crashes on the motorway,

says the motoring organisation.

In one incident on the M1 in Northamptonshire, police recorded 80 drivers using their phones or cameras to photograph emergency services carry out a four and a half hour rescue of a woman trapped in her crashed truck.

The seriously injured driver was eventually flown by air ambulance to hospital and survived the crash. The police have contacted most of the drivers to warn them about their illegal and irresponsible behaviour but have not brought any prosecutions.

Edmund King, AA president, says: “Drivers need to concentrate on driving rather than be distracted by their digital technology. Our research shows that some drivers are now using their smart phones for more than talking on the move. It is really not smart to talk, text or tweet on the move.

“Digital rubber neckers who photograph crashes really are morbid voyeurs who should be concentrating on the road not the victims of crashes. It beggars belief that these macabre motorists should put their lives and others at risk through their lust for twisted metal.

“We would like to see the police target more mobile phone abusers so that the message gets out that it is not worth hanging on the telephone while driving. However, we have seen a 29% reduction in traffic police in the last decade so their resources are stretched.”

Road safety charity Brake’s campaign urging drivers to put their phones out of sight and out of mind while driving warns that using a phone behind the wheel can lengthen reaction times to a similar extent to drink driving, significantly increasing the risk of crashing.

The charity says unlike other types of deadly risk-taking, men and women — young and old — are almost equally guilty of using their phone behind the wheel, showing widespread misunderstanding of the dangers.

Julie Townsend, Brake deputy chief executive, says: “Use a phone while driving and you are taking a horrendous risk with your own life and the lives of others. Many drivers who wouldn’t dream of drink-driving are using phones while driving, oblivious that the effect on your reaction times can be similar.

“We’re urging people to drive smart, recognising that phone use at the wheel can and does destroy lives, and no call or text is ever that important. If you need to use your phone urgently, pull over somewhere safe first: it’s as simple as that. We are also calling on the government to do more to tackle phone use at the wheel, including banning hands-free phones and bringing in far stiffer penalties.” . © Freefeatures.com.

Draft plans unveiled to provide homes and jobs for Shoreham Harbour

ESIDENTS, BUSINESSES AND other organisations in Adur and Brighton & Hove are being invited to give their views on a Joint Area Action Plan for Shoreham Harbour.

The draft plan sets out proposals for the area’s regeneration over the next 15 years which includes around 1,450 homes, new employment space and upgraded flood defences. It also provides for improvements to transport infrastructure, public spaces, community and leisure facilities and conservation of environmental and historic features.

The plan also recognises the importance of Shoreham Port as a major employer in the area and the role it will play in the local economy.

The area covered by the plan stretches from the new Adur Ferry Bridge in Shoreham to Hove Lagoon. The plan has been drawn up jointly between Adur District Council, Brighton & Hove City Council and West Sussex County Council, working closely with Shoreham Port Authority.

Consultation begins on 17th February 2014 and continues for 10 weeks until 25th April.

SHOREHAM AIRPORT

Community Memorial

T

HERE WAS A Garden of Remembrance at the entrance to a D-Day museum that was housed at Shoreham Airport. When the museum closed in 2003 the topsoil, containing the ashes of pilots, and the rose bushes were moved to the front of the Lancing College Chapel. Members of a local motorcycle club assisted with the move and some still attend a Remembrance Day ceremony at the chapel garden.

The existing Memorial, installed by Gerald Spicer in 1997, is now managed and maintained as a public amenity by a voluntary Board of Trustees. The memorial is managed as a not-for-profit enterprise and all funds will be used to maintain the site.

Thanks to generous donations and sponsorship from local companies and individuals as well as the airport 28

owners and operators the site is being refurbished and improved.

The B26 Propeller has recently been re-installed after removal and a complete overhaul to bring it back to pristine condition. They have not straightened out the bend in the lower left blade as this is was how it was when recovered from the downed aircraft.

There will be a paved walkway round the memorial allowing ease of access for all. Two wooden planters will be sited each side of the south face and filled with appropriate plants during the different seasons. Brian Brown’s memorial stone will be re-sited within the memorial and a similar stone for Don Bean MBE (founder and organiser of Shoreham Airshow) will be placed on site. The work should be completed early 2014 subject to weather conditions.

The memorial is non-denominational and is a public site for the remembrance of those who gave their lives in past conflicts and also a place for a permanent tribute to honour a person connected with or making a significant contribution to the Airport. Everyone is invited to use the area for a moment of reflection and

quietly remember those who will never be forgotten.

It is open to the public during Airport opening hours. Recognised organisations may, with advance application to the Trustees, use the memorial to conduct a service of remembrance and thanksgiving, place wreaths and parade standards.

It is planned that individual memorials, either memorial stones or metal plaques, can be placed on the site. To maintain the quality and integrity of the site all additions to the memorial must be approved by the Trustees. The specifications and prices will be available soon.

The Memorial is supported by donations and sponsorship. ADUR FESTIVAL

STRANGE CREATURES

T

HE ADUR FESTIVAL gets underway this year from 24th May-8th June with the programme launch at 7.30pm on the 30th April at the Ropetackle Centre.

The theme this year is ‘Strange Creatures’. Schools, community groups and local artists will all be out in force on Adur’s streets! Look out for The Insect Circus, Strange Creature Pop Up Pet Shops and the Strange Creature Carnival Band.

Ropetackle’s chairman, Martin Allen, said, ‘Since taking over the running of the festival last year, our main aim was to regenerate the Festival by creating a buzz about it, to draw people in, whatever their contribution.’

Festival director, Mella Faye Punchard added, ‘Now in our second year, we are really excited about growing the festival.

Last year we had only four months to co-ordinate and deliver. This year, with an increase in funding from Arts Council England, we are able to look at expanding the reach of the central events we organise. There will be street

performance and community activities across the district on the 24th May, our big carnival day.’

STRANGE CREATURE POP-UP PET SHOPS

After the success of Adur Wonderland which ran last year as part of the Adur Festival, there are now plans afoot to run a district wide pop-up shop project as part of Adur Festival 2014.

This time, to fit with the festival theme, there could be three Strange Creature pop up pet shops; one in Shoreham, Southwick and Sompting.

The project is being headed up by local community artist, Jane Gordon of Arts Workshops, with the support of festival co-ordinator, Mella Faye Punchard.

Jane says, ‘I’ve been keen to create a

making space for community members and artists to share resources and ideas for a while now. When I met Mella, I explained to her how much the community had treasured the Adur Wonderland project as a creative sharing space. By the end of the conversation the idea was born; Strange Creature Pop-up Pet Shops! There will be resident professional a rtists and visiting artists including children’s illustrator, Layn Marlow, theatre company, Long Nose Puppets and musician Tom Cook.’
