Are you free on a Thursday evening?

W

hy not sing in a friendly choir? Shoreham Oratorio Choir is an established part of Shoreham by Sea’s classical music scene.

They rehearse every Thursday in the warm comfortable surroundings of The Methodist Church, Brunswick Road, Shoreham from 7.45-9.30pm.

Their conductor is Tony Allen and accompanist Nicola Gruenberg. They start their season in mid September with concerts at Christmas, Easter and June.

Just to confuse you, they have a break with tradition this season and their concerts will be Jan 16th and April 24th 2010. There is no audition and they are always willing to help those who want to learn or improve their singing skills.

They always welcome new singers and would love to see you for rehearsals starting Jan 21st 2010.

They will be rehearsing Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle for a concert on April 24th our concert venue will be St Mary De Haura, Shoreham by Sea. This lovely Norman Church has a great tradition of musical events and has wonderful acoustics for choral singing.

The choir also enjoys joint concerts with Chanctonbury Chorus from Steyning in recent years they have performed

Verdi’s Requiem and Karl Jenkin’s The Armed Man in the glorious Lancing College Chapel. They have also sung Handel’s Messiah in Worth Abbey with The Sussex Chorus They have a very long standing exchange with a German Choir from Elmshorn, Schleswig Holstein. Their friends from the Madrigalchor are delightful and choir members have many longstanding friendships.

They welcome experienced singers and those who perhaps have not sung since school choir. Come and experience the thrill of performing the great classical works in a big choir. It is absolutely great for mind, body and spirit.

Their next concert will be held in St Mary de Haura, Shoreham by Sea at 7.30pm on Saturday, January 16th 2010 with Berlioz ‘Childhood of Christ’ and carols for Epiphany, the period after Christmas. Soloists will be the international tenor Neil Jenkins, soprano Frederique Klooster, baritone Michel Kallipetis, bass Edmund Connolly. Loch Ness 10k RUN FOR BRAVE LAUREN

ith frost on the ground, bare branches on the trees and Christmas around the corner, celebrate this special season with Sussex Wildlife Trust (SWT).

On Saturday 5 December (11:0013:00) listen to a wintery tale and sing some festive songs around the magical old oak tree at the Trust’s nature reserve at Woods Mill near Henfield.

As well as walking around the woodland, collect natural plant material to create a willow wreath tree decoration to take home. There’s also the chance to use clay and make a tea-light lamp to add sparkle to your Christmas.

fter just two months personal fitness training provided by Enliven Personal Training, a local based Personal Training company, three relatively unfit and untrained local businessmen successfully completed their first 10k run, running around the famous Loch Ness, in Scotland and raised in excess of £2,500 whilst doing so. The run was part of many charity events held recently to raise funds in support of recently paralysed teenager Lauren Jones. Lauren broke her back falling from a tree in June but has amazed doctors, friends and family with her attitude and progress. Whilst still undergoing intensive rehabilitation

and still coming to terms with using her wheelchair, she has had tennis lessons and has been swimming and could even compete for Great Britain in the 2012 Olympics. All monies raised would be going to sports and exercise equipment to help Lauren physical therapy and growing involvement in wheelchair sports.

Local Policing A

dur district Police would like to welcome a new Police Officer to the neighbourhood policing team for Lancing and Shoreham town centres.

PC Julian Pinkney CP616 has joined Sussex Police from Avon and Somerset Constabulary in October 2009. He started his police career in Taunton in 1987 as a response officer. During his time in the west country Julian worked in a wide variety of uniformed departments including a few years as a community officer in Stoke Bishop, Bristol.

Julian has transferred directly in to the Neighbourhood Police Team as this is where he feels he is best suited, as he thrives on community contact and team working to provide lasting solutions. Julian’s role is to bring a visible presence to your community with a particular focus on the business communities in Shoreham and Lancing.

Julian is a part-time officer, which means his time is spread thinly but he will be available between 9.30 AM and 2.30 PM on weekdays and will endeavour to be as visible as possible during these times. by West Sussex Fire and Rescue, Neighbourhood Watch, Community Safety team, Crime prevention Officers.

The purpose of these events are to reduce crime in three key areas over the Christmas period. These will include; burglaries, vehicle crime and purse thefts. Purse chains, advice and crime prevention cards will be handed out. If you want any crime prevention advice please do not hesitate to come to the stand and speak with us. You will be able to find us in the atrium between Tesco’s and Marks and Spencer.

Is it a bird…

I

s it a bird? Is it a plane? No – it’s Captain Righteous who will fly into Shoreham in January 2010 to fight evil villains and ultimately save the day.

Adur Theatre Company (ATC) present Captain Righteous and the Christmas Crisis written by Matthew Stevens. This production continues ATC’s tradition of panto with nontraditional themes such as King Arthur, Frankenstein, Panto at The OK Corral and, most recently, Panto of the Opera.

Captain Righteous and the Christmas Crisis is a fast moving, funny, cartoon strip style of a show with super heroes and evil villains. Set in Cosmopolis, it has all the expected characters including the evil Red Claw and his two henchmen who plan to take over the world. Add into the mix a branch of the Italian Mafia with Al Cappuchino, the current Godfather of Cosmopolis refusing to relinquish power, then it soon becomes obvious that superhero Captain Righteous and his sidekick Sparrow have their work cut out to save the day.

They will be fighting the forces of evil assisted by a host of characters including the local policeman, the town mayor and his PA (a larger than life Dame) and roving TV news reporter Jenny Jackson who has a crush on our superhero.

Burton Munday from Dolphin Road, Shoreham takes the title role, assisted in his fight against evil by Ben Casson (Shoreham) a keen but clumsy wannabee superhero – Sparrow. The show boasts two heroines – Laura Egan (Portslade) as TV news reporter Jenny Jenkins and Janet Cuckney (Fishersgate) as the feisty Lucy Lockett.

‘H’ Reeves (Southwick) and Tom Ronan (Lancing) play Mr Biceps and Mr Triceps, the two bungling henchman of arch villain Red Claw (Keith Fowler from Worthing). Jill Leslie (Shoreham Beach) plays Godfather Al Cappuchino, aided and abetted by Italian hoods Mr Linguine (Paul Lynn – Shoreham) and Mr Macarroni (Ron Common –Portslade).

Autumn garden W

elcome to the new gardening feature for Inside Shoreham. In the regular feature I will be giving timely pointers for the garden as to what jobs can be carried out to get the best from your garden, greenhouse and the increasingly popular vegetable patch.

As we start to get drawn into the short cold days of winter and leave the very mild autumn behind, there are a large number of jobs that can be carried out and may have been put off as you strived to get the most from the garden and keep the summer flowers going for as long as possible.

The lawn Work now will pay dividends in the following year, its a good time to:• Rake up any leaves as soon as possible. Store them in black bin liners to make great leaf compost for next year • Aerate the lawn. Get air into the lawn and loosen compaction by using a fork to put holes in the lawn, that can be filled with lawn sand • Scarify the lawn to remove unwanted thatch and moss from the lawn. It will look rough when done, but it will give the lawn a chance to thicken up.

• If we get a couple of dry days then give it a last cut, to keep it looking good for winter.

The greenhouse As the use of the greenhouse reduces, chose a dry warm day to remove the last of the plants outside and give the greenhouse a good clean out. A wash down of all the surfaces will help to kill off any lingering diseases. Make sure the plants go back in to avoid any frost though!

If it’s anything like mine then the shed can do with a good tidy up as well. Pots can be washed through, and the contents of the shed can be re-organised to keep it a bit tidier and make it a comfortable place to work on the rainy days.

The vegetable plot Work that is done over winter will reap you rewards next year.

It’s time to clear away and start looking ahead to next year.

• Dig up plants that have run their course and put them on the compost heap. If any plants have suffered from disease such as tomato blight then burn these, or dispose of at the tip.

• Remember to check plants such as runner beans, for any seed pods. These can be stored in dry containers or envelopes to give a good supply of seeds for next year.

Even better they are free!

• Dig over beds. Adding in well rotted manure or compost will help prepare the ground for next year. If the ground is dug over now the coming frosts will help to break it down, and the birds and other creatures will forage for many of the bugs and their larvae to help clear pests.

• Now is a good time to plant garlic to get a good crop for next year. Garlic needs a run of low temperature to get the best from it.

• Harvest what remains of crops that can be stored for winter. Carrots and beetroot can be easily stored in sand boxes. We have tried this and it works very well. Crops that cannot be stored such as tomatoes can be put to good use to make chutneys and sauces.

Finally take the time to have a hard earned cup of tea and walk around the garden. Take stock of the garden and make a wish list of jobs and improvements for next year.

wooden shoes by the fireplace, and Sinterklaas would reward good children by placing treats in their shoes. Dutch colonists brought brought this tradition with them to America in the 17th century and here the Anglican name of Santa Claus emerged.

In 1822 Clement C. Moore composed the poem A Visit From Saint Nicholas, published as The Night Before Christmas as a gift for his children. In it, he portrays Santa Claus: He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly, He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

Other countries feature different gift-bearers for the Christmas or Advent season: La Befana in Italy ~ The Three Kings in Spain, Puerto Rico, and Mexico ~ Christkindl or the Christ Child in Switzerland and Austria ~ Father Christmas in England ~ and Pere NoĂŤl, Father Christmas or the Christ Child in France. Still, the figure of Santa Claus as a jolly, benevolent, plump man in a red suit described in Moore's poem remains with us today and is recognized by children and adults alike around the world.

he origin of Santa Claus begins in the fourth century with Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, an area in present day Turkey.

By all accounts St. Nicholas was a generous man, particularly devoted to children. After his death around 340 A.D. he was buried in Myra, but in 1087 Italian sailors purportedly stole his remains and removed them to Bari, Italy, greatly increasing St. Nicholas' popularity throughout Europe.

His kindness and reputation for generosity gave rise to claims he that he could perform miracles and devotion to him increased. St. Nicholas became the patron saint of Russia, where he was known by his red cape, flowing white beard, and bishop's mitre. In Greece, he is the patron saint of sailors, in France he was the patron of lawyers, and in Belgium the patron of children and travellers. Thousands of churches across Europe were dedicated to him and some time around the 12th century an official church holiday was created in his honor. The Feast of St. Nicholas was celebrated December 6 and the day was marked by gift-giving and charity.

After the Reformation, European followers of St. Nicholas dwindled, but the legend was kept alive in Holland where the Dutch spelling of his name Sint Nikolaas was eventually transformed to Sinterklaas. Dutch children would leave their

f you are looking for a mortgage, then be prepared. The credit crunch has forced lenders to tighten up their act when assessing new borrowers, so it is imperative your adviser has the right facts when assessing which lender is right for you.

You can play a bit part in making your application smooth and trouble free, simply by having all of the correct information and paperwork to hand.

It used to be that you could apply for a mortgage and as long as you had a good credit score the lender would ask for nothing further, but things have changed. Not only are mortgages harder to come by, the lender will normally ask for further paperwork to prove that you are a worthy borrower.

Buckingham Park I

n the 15th century a section of land north and east of St. Nicholas Church was known as ‘Buckinghams’, apparently named after John Buckingham, a steward of John de Braose who had been given these acres in the 13th century. A house on this land called Buckinghams or Buckingham Place is mentioned in records dating from the 1540s.

It is known that in the 1650s the land belonged to Edward Blaker who built a manor house there.

In 1766 Colville Bridger bought the house and surrounding acres, making Buckinghams the seat of his landowning family. The park surrounding the house was at this time known as ‘The Lawn’.

Around 1820, the Bridgers had a new house built on the site.

Buckingham House was an imposing mansion designed by J.B. Rebecca. It had a classical style façade including Doric columns. Today part of the exterior of Buckingham house still survives, incorporated into a modern housing estate off of what is now Normans Crescent.

Originally, Buckingham House had a gatehouse known as Buckingham Lodge, that lead to both Buckingham House and it’s private park. It was situated just north of the trees at the top of Buckingham Road. The lodge keeper’s job was to open the gates for the estate’s carriages to pass and to keep trespassers out. Later there were two gates, one for pedestrians and one for motor vehicles. Rebuilt by the early 20th century, the current gatehouse is now a residential address in Upper Shoreham Road. From the beginning of the 20th century the park was occasionally opened to the public for fetes and other events.

To the north of the park, a hunting gate led out onto the open downland beyond. The hounds belonging to the Southdown Hunt were housed in kennels within the park at this time. A seat inscribed to those who had died in World War 1, fronted the triangle of trees at the top of Buckingham Road.

From the 18th century the Bridger family also owned Little Buckingham

Farm, on land north of what is now The Avenue. Today, The Avenue largely follows the route of what was once an old cart track from the ferry at Old Shoreham via The Street to Portslade. This route passed both Little Buckingham Farm and Buckingham House.

In the 1930s tenant farmer Captain Torr who lived in its own rather grand house, Little Buckingham, was running Little Buckingham Farm. At this time the thriving farm had a 1000 acres of land, including downland to the north and meadows to the east of Buckingham Road. Its buildings included a dairy, chicken huts, and a granary. The chicken huts had been designed to house soldiers in the First World War and were home to hundred of birds. It also had stabling for both heavy horses to pull the farm vehicles, and racehorses, which were used to compete at Fontwell and Lingfield. The farm also had a duck pond and a large dovecote. The dovecote still remains, situated on what is now Downsway.

The farm buildings north of The Avenue and Little Buckingham House itself are however long gone.

In the 1890s the Bridger Family moved to nearby Adur Lodge in The Street. Adur Lodge at this time had its own coach houses beside it, which

weren’t demolished until after the Second World War. When the Bridgers moved to Adur Lodge, the imposing mansion Buckingham House was then let for a while to Henry Head, who tragically lost three of his sons during the time he was living there, including one killed at Galipoli and one in the Titanic disaster. The house and its grounds were bought W.G. Little in the early 1900s. He built a new mansion 200 yards north of the original, which later became the Downs School. After the Second World War this imposing mock Tudor house became a children’s home for a while before finally being demolished.

In 1930, the western area of the parkland was built on and the council acquired the eastern section. It cost them £14, 850 for it’s 38 acres and was officially opened to the public as Buckingham Park on February 28th 1931 During the Second World War, Buckingham Park was used as an army camp, and Adur Lodge and Little Buckingham House were also taken over by the army. After the war, Buckingham Park was soon open to the public again providing the tennis courts, bowling green, cricket and football pitches and playground that are still popular today.
