Expedition of a life time

Arjowiggins Graphic, has sponsored Elliott Baxter’s Matt Elliott on one of the world’s most difficult challenges: crossing the Antarctic.

The Centenary Race to the South Pole is a celebration of the race between Sir Robert Falcon Scott and Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. This was only the fourth time that the race has taken place, with the second time popularised in the BBC documentary series “On Thin Ice”, which saw Ben Fogel and James Cracknell take on the Antarctic.

The competition was organised by Extreme World Races and included 16 competitors from six nations. Team EBB was comprised of Matt, 30 from Windsor and Yoyo Schepers-Menten, a 49-year-old Dutch national.

Matt trained for almost two years for this challenge and is a keen marathon runner. Despite an interest in trekking and hiking he is a complete polar novice so this challenge tested his mental resolve to the limit. Matt also celebrated his 30th birthday on the 21st January whilst on the expedition!

During their time in the South Pole the competitors faced snow bridges, multiple crevasses, winds of 80 mph and temperatures of -45°C. On these extreme weather conditions, Matt explains: “Antarctica is the world’s highest

and driest desert and the conditions can change from sublime sunshine to a horrendous whiteout in minutes. One thing I can be sure of is that I do not want to be in -45°C again as, in temperatures as low as those, the cold is physically painful.”

David Cook, MD of Arjowiggins Graphic comments: “Our initial reaction when we were approached by Matt was almost one of disbelief. I am a keen runner but I’ve never thought about testing myself this much before.

However, his desire and drive were obvious, and we knew that helping him to achieve this goal would be a great thing to do. Both of the charities that they supported are great causes and we were happy to help them to raise as much money as possible for this amazing feat of human resilience.”

The race was filmed by Urban Brew Studios for a documentary called “Cold Sweat” which will be broadcast later this year on TV. The programme will give viewers the opportunity to experience the extraordinary achievements of the participants and to share in the emotions of their journey.

Duplo in Sunday Times 2012 Best Company shortlist Duplo International has achieved the Sunday Times Best Companies’ One Star Accreditation for 2012. Olympic Golden Greats Exhibition

The Canon iPF8300 and Canon Glacier media has been used to print an exhibition of Olympic gold medallists. The work by two renowned UK based photographers, Drew Gardner and Lucinda Marland were showcased at John Lewis, Westfield, Stratford City, London, which overlooks the Olympic site.

Velmex Distribution, Canon’s, wide format printer distributor, used Canon’s 300gsm glacier paper to print the exhibition. Photographer Drew Gardner said ‘The Glacier media gives a very sharp result, I print all my work on a Canon ImagePROGRAF iPF6300, but as the images needed to be larger Velmex printed the exhibition on the 44 inch iPF8300. The results look fantastic, definitely exhibition quality.’

The two photographers, Gardner and Marland, have spent the past two years completing an anthology of every living British Olympic gold medallist in an individual sport, 60 years or older in 2012. The pair travelled over 15000 miles across the UK and as far as the west coast of America to photograph all 14 of the athletes. Gardner said ‘The inspiration for the project came from childhood recollections of ‘Golden Greats’ and wondering where they were now. The project has been incredibly rewarding and so well supported by the athletes and the sponsors.’

Drew Gardner www.drew.it • www.dualistic.co.uk Drew has been a photographer for over thirty years; his first professional work was published on the front page of his local newspaper, ‘The Lincolnshire Free Press’ when he was 15.

He graduated from regional to national newspapers where he worked for 10 years before moving into his own style of photography. His work is diverse with a strong narrative, encompassing group portraiture to beautiful and extraordinary people both on location and in the studio. He has a burning passion for his craft and for people getting the very best from any given situation.

More recently Drew has embarked on a film career, producing, directing and shooting short films and a TV documentary. Drew lectures all over the world in advanced digital and lighting techniques. He has also been working with disadvantaged young people in the townships of Cape Town, South Africa, building a practical and sustainable learning programme with the NGO True North.

Lucinda Marland www.lucindamarland.com After many years as an account manager in contract publishing, Lucinda made photography her career in 2003. She got her big break shooting news, features and sport for the Sydney Morning Herald and the Sun Herald newspapers in Australia.

Back home she worked on the regional newspapers and before turning freelance she worked in the Far East with the youth development charity Raleigh International. Lucinda’s keen interest in people and communities is reflected in her work, uncovering stories about ordinary people who often have little known extraordinary stories. Her eye for emotion and emphasis on people has earned her a reputation as a thoughtful and creative photographer.

Don’t Look Down!

On Sunday 4th March Lisa Metcalfe, Marketing Manager, Roland DG (UK) descended from the top of the Bristol Premier Inn hotel, to raise more than £800 for childrens cancer charity CLIC Sargent Located at the base of the M32 motorway and standing 200ft tall, the Bristol Premier Inn is one of the city’s tallest hotels. Lisa, accompanied by her fiancé, Iain Moncrieff, took on the mighty challenge in the wind and the rain to complete the descent to raise money for charity.

Said Lisa: “Every year I love to take on a personal challenge whilst raising money for charity, and this year was no different. I was terrified as I stood on top of the building looking down at the spectators, spending their Sunday morning cheering on the participants, waving with one hand while clutching umbrellas in the other!

“As I started my descent I slipped and crashed hip first followed quickly by head into the side of the wall. A little shaken, embarrassed by my unglamorous fall, but not deterred, I got back into a horizontal position, gave a smile and remembered the reason why I was putting myself through all of this so early on a Sunday morning.

“This year I was raising money for CLIC Sargent, the children’s cancer charity and am proud to say that between Iain and I, we raised over £800.

I was overjoyed when I reached the bottom and it’s certainly something to be able to tell the children, and grandchildren, in years to come.”

As the UK’s leading children’s cancer charity, CLIC Sargent offers all round care and support every step of the way - during treatment in the hospital and at home, through specialist social care and support in the community and after treatment by helping survivors and supporting the bereaved.

Greenshires doubles up with Bodoni and Epson Greenshires, one of the UK’s largest producers of sophisticated marketing materials and supplier of fulfilment solutions, has installed a Digital Information Preproofer system that uses two Epson Stylus Pro 9700 printers to provide duplex printing of imposed proofs at sheet sizes up to 44 inches wide.

Installed by specialist reseller Bodoni Systems, the Preproofer links the two Epson wide format printers together both mechanically and electronically so that precise doubled sided proofs can be printed for subsequent folding and trimming to produce complete paginated proofs and product mock-ups.

The Pre-proofer combines two Epson Stylus Pro printers, either 7700/7900 models for 24 inch width output or 9700/9900 for 44 inch, in a stable platform. A paper guide links the two printers so that one side and then the reverse can be printed in a single operation. Special duplex paper is used which is available in a range of types and weights. Control and data management are provided by Digital Information’s DI-Plot proofing software, which accepts ROOM (RIP once output many) data in a variety of popular data formats and from a range of prepress workflow systems. It can apply ICC-based colour management independently to both printers for colour critical applications as necessary.

Peter Tayler, studio manager at Greenshires’ Leicester site, agrees about the Epson quality: “We already had an Epson Stylus Pro 9900 which we use for Matchprint proofs and so we had confidence in the product quality. When we researched the market there were really only two options but the Pre-proofer was the more up to date solution. We particularly like the electronic registration concept where a camera reads a registration strip printed on the first side in order to accurately align the printing of the second side, instead of relying on mechanical methods” “We have been routinely pre-proofing each job for content, position and imposition checking, for either account handler or direct client sign-off, for years. Previously, we were printing two sheets single sided and sticking them together, which was very labour intensive. The Pre-proofer solution is quieter, neater and is saving us a lot of time and therefore labour costs. We’re getting great quality results and there are useful options to trade off print quality against speed of output, which helps as these proofs are often needed urgently. It all helps us to put a much improved product in front of our clients,” adds Tayler.

The Print Futures Awards 2012

Type Direction Club

For 65 years, the Type Directors Club of New York has concerned itself with the improvement of typography - and it does not look as though it will be retiring any time soon! On the contrary: The most important competition in the world on writing form is not only alive and kicking, it also embraces new offshoots and more internationality for new records.

Thus the TDC show this year at drupa is not just accompanied by the writing design competition TCD2 but also by the new TDC Title Design, a competition dedicated to innovative opening credits and moving image typography. Despite an abundance of awards, the TDC show is time and again considered the yardstick for writing and typography! “drupa and the TDC show have been close partners for over 20 years”, said a happy Bertram Schmidt-Friderichs, Chairman of the German Committee of the TDC of New York: “Graphic design has had an established presence at drupa for many years thanks to the support of Messe Düsseldorf! Where would the presentation of the newest print and media technologies be without the latest trends and models with which you can produce the best in communication with writing?”

Xerox’s newest series of light production devices – the Xerox D95/D110/D125 copier/ printer and D110/D125 printer – deliver sharp black and white image quality with speed and efficiency.

Built to handle the demands of print intensive environments, the devices make it easy for educators to create curriculum materials, student directories, course packs and bound materials. HP’s Latex Inks

On HP’s stand at FESPA Digital visitors saw a line-up of printers, including the first showing at a major international exhibition of the new HP Designjet L28500 and HP Designjet L26500 Printers that use HP Latex Inks, and offer a broader range of indoor and outdoor signage.

In a comprehensive display that extended beyond the exhibition hall HP presented a range of its printers for flexible and rigid applications both on its stand and at its GSB Experience Centre in nearby San Cugat adding value to the visitor experience. A shuttle service ran to the centre throughout the show where HP demonstrated the full Sign and Display portfolio (including the new HP Scitex FB7600 Industrial Press, the HP Scitex TJ8600 Industrial Press and HP Scitex XP series printers).

Launched in November and seen for the first time at an international exhibition, the 2.64m (104in) HP Designjet L28500 Printer delivers speeds up to 70 per cent faster than the HP Designjet L25500 Printer, while the 1.55m (61in) HP Designjet L26500 Printer is ideal for customers entering the growing soft signage market.

Both systems feature new HP 792 Latex Designjet Inks, which produce rich blacks and glossy results on banners and self-adhesive vinyl, and offer double sided printing capabilities with less user intervention and more accurate, automated registration.

Also on show from the HP Latex printing range was the established 3.2m (126in) HP Scitex LX850 Industrial Printer, a production solution that delivers maximum versatility and productivity with multiple workflow features, including dual roll, roll to free fall, roll to collector handling and an ink collector.

HP personnel were on hand to provide information on high end

production devices like the new HP Scitex FB7600 Industrial Press that features new HP FB225 Scitex Inks, workflow improvements for increased productivity and versatility and an optional multi-sheet loader. There was also a video playing throughout the show, focusing on the capabilities and versatility of the HP Scitex FB7600 Industrial Press to enable PSPs (print service providers) to evaluate its potential for their businesses. Delivering powerful production capabilities with speeds up to 95 full boards per hour and a new POP print mode that images 55 full boards per hour with indoor quality, the HP Scitex FB7600 Industrial Press offers a variety of enhancements to accelerate throughput on a wide range of flexible and rigid media.

Special focus areas on the stand also provided business-building advice for companies looking to enhance their environmental programmes or expand their services into areas of interior decor and textile printing.

Mimaki New Fast Direct to Textile TX500-1800DS

Mimaki has added volume textile inkjet production to its range with the introduction of the Mimaki TX500-1800DS, capable of printing at 150 square metres per hour on pre-treated polyester fabrics. This printer, together with Mimaki’s new Sb300 sublimation ink, delivers enhanced capabilities and productivity to the textile apparel and soft signage markets by eliminating the need to print to transfer papers. The Mimaki TX500-1800DS printer is expected to be available in Summer 2012.

The Mimaki TX500-1800DS features a number of new capabilities that textile apparel and soft signage manufacturers will find attractive, including: • Fast direct to textile printing at 150m2/h in high-speed mode. The TX5001800DS uses newly developed printheads that achieve a maximum speed in four colour mode that is 150% faster than conventional models. The printer includes six printheads, in a staggered configuration.

• Built-in heater accelerates drying time of printed fabric. This prevents ink set-off in the production process, improving overall quality and productivity while eliminating rework caused by excessive ink set-off.

• Mist absorption filter. The mist absorption filter prevents problems caused by ink mists and enhances the stability of print operations by suctioning the mist inside the printer and discharging it.

• Mimaki Degassing Module. The Mimaki degassing module (MDM-20) eliminates the gasses or bubbles that can occur in inks during the printing process, decreasing the likelihood of nozzle blockage and improving the

accuracy of ink dot placement. In addition, this module enables the printer to use undegassed bottled inks instead of conventional degassed ink packs, thus reducing ink costs.

• New dye sublimation ink. Mimaki has developed a new ink, optimised for dye sublimation printing and for use with the TS500-1800SB and the TX500-1800DS. Sb300 ink offers an affordable price, dries quickly and produces brilliant colours. Two ink configurations can be selected at the time of printer installation: the six colour mode for smooth gradation and better pale colours, or the four colour mode for higher productivity.

• Auto Media Feeder (AMF). Mimaki’s unique Auto Media Feeder provides stable feed take-up of polyester fabrics, eliminating much of the need for operator intervention during printing.

• Larger Roll Media Size. The TX500-1800DS can accept rolls of fabric up to 60kg and 300mm in diameter, further improving operator productivity by eliminating the need for frequent media changes. Larger orders can be continuously printed without interruption, or batches of smaller orders using the same fabric can be easily handled. In addition, roll shaft handles are designed to make installation of heavy rolls of fabric easier.

• Standard user friendly RIP “RasterLink 6”. The RasterLink6 can be handled intuitively and without difficulty. Print and other conditions can easily be set, as the display screen is switched on in the same window and the printing progress can be monitored on the main screen. The colour replacement function enhances the ability to re-create printed images, as selected colours from the colour charts of RasterLink 6 can be added into swatches of Illustrator. The colour matching system matches the measured colour to an almost identical colour from the colour profile of RasterLink 6. A colourimeter is not a standard feature. There is also a printing colour simulation function, allowing users to simulate printing colours on Illustrator/Photoshop without actually printing it. This latest function requires MPM2 (Mimaki Profile Master 2). In summary, the integration of RasterLink 6, enable users to save both time and money in the design and production process.

X-Rite, Incorporated and Pantone LLC, unveiled PantoneLIVE, a cloud based colour service that provides instant access to essential brand colour standards. PantoneLIVE is the first service under the Pantone Digital Business Unit, a newly created division of X-Rite that is the byproduct of Pantone’s expertise as the world’s colour authority and X-Rite’s colour science and technology leadership.

From chocolates and champagne to soda and stilettos, the past year has been wrought with cases of counterfeiting, deception and consumer confusion — all tied to the ubiquitous colours that uniquely identify brands. Cadbury and Veuve Clicquot were involved in high profile legal battles to own their brand colours, while Christian Louboutin fought to trademark its signature red soles. With colour so critically tied to brand identity, inconsistent brand colour can lead to a lack of consumer confidence and lost sales.

“PantoneLIVE represents a transformational change in colour management for brand owners across their entire supply chain,” explained Tom Vacchiano, president and CEO of X-Rite. “Our own Dr. Sonia Megert, whose vision for the digital supply chain led to the development of PantoneLIVE, will head the new Pantone Digital Business Unit.”

Brand colour standards are the principal component of PantoneLIVE and are derived from real ink on real substrates using real printing processes. A brand’s colour assets, analogous to a brand’s colour DNA, are managed and maintained in a secure cloud based data repository to ensure accurate colour communication – to any supplier, around the world.

“The benefits of using PantoneLIVE are clear,” says Nigel Dickie, director of corporate and government affairs for Heinz (see Beanz Meanz Heinz and Knowing about Color case study). “The digital tools gave us unprecedented control and consistency from different print processes and materials. Across all of our packaging formats we saw a reduction in colour variance of 50 percent and saved time by establishing one colour target that can be applied to all our Heinz Beanz designs. The results with our Beanz packaging have been so remarkable that we plan to extend PantoneLIVE to additional product lines, including Heinz soups and Spaghetti Hoops.”

PantoneLIVE is connected to a large portfolio of software, containing real world colour data for hundreds of thousands of colours, and is supported by the latest colour measurement technology. This is combined with professional services including workflow and colour rationalisation audits, and customised operating procedures from Pantone and X-Rite. Custom and bespoke spectral data, as well as metadata, are used to digitse brand colours. Digitised palettes are then expanded to create independent colour standards to allow for accurate colour reproduction on a variety of substrates.

Brand colour data, equivalent to a digital colour swatch, is stored in a secure, cloud based portal that lets brand owners and other approved members of the supply chain manage digital rights and facilitate colour communication across all materials in the production process. This centralised colour communication process promotes consistency and helps achieve speed to market efficiencies from initial design to final production. The portal also provides direction to suppliers to meet brand requirements related to colour quality.

Tetenal eco-solvent Mutoh Printers and Kala Laminators

Following their huge success in the large format printer business in 2011 Tetenal UK have extended their product range with an eco-solvent printer and laminator, both available with immediate effect.

The ValueJet 1204, a compact 51” printer from Mutoh, is a perfect solution for new start ups or those looking to add a new revenue stream to their existing business. Sign & Digital UK proved to be the place to see a number of exciting new products launched for the quick print and sign industry. Predicting our future requirements for new print products and services doesn’t require a crystal ball, just the research to collate this report and go to print as the show doors open.

ll you print professionals know that to publish this report to our 36,000 print club members to land in the first few days of April will have taken the loan of a time machine which was the only thing not on show at the NEC. Yes, knowing not to kid a kidder, this is an anticipated review, as we go to print before we attend the show. Catch up with our real scenario experience on line or in these pages next month, but we couldn’t suppress supplier new product news when they have gone to so much bother to re-tool the quickest part of the print industry.

Agfa Graphics – the new 2.54 x 1.54m :Anapurna M2540 FB made its UK debut. It is a dedicated flatbed printer with a photo quality engine, featuring six colours plus white, which ensures highly durable prints with excellent adhesion on a multitude of substrates. Also showing for the first time in the UK is the 2.05m :Anapurna M2050 which has quickly become a best seller as a highly cost effective platform for companies wanting to produce top quality graphics. Users also benefit from its UVcurable output and the ability to print direct to 2 x 3m rigid and 2m wide flexible materials.

Océ hosted the first UK public showing of their new Arizona 318 GL UV flatbed, the latest development in the Océ Arizona Series. The Océ Arizona 318 GL system is a highly capable introductory UV flatbed model that offers smaller print producers entry to the world of high-quality UV flatbed printing.

Hybrid Services / Mimaki hosted the UK and Irish launch of the Mimaki JV400-LX latex printer.

The new Mimaki JV400-130LX and JV400-160LX feature state of the art Mimaki latex inks and are the first machines to incorporate Mimaki’s cutting edge print engine.

Fujifilm showcased its latest LED UV printer – the Acuity LED 1600 – for the first time in the UK at Sign & Digital UK 2012. The LED UV printer was joined by Fujifilm’s new XMF web to print system and a wide range of innovative euromedia products.

Maxicam displayed for the first time in the UK the MAXI-C 1325 CNC Router. The MAXI-C 1325 is an ideal machine for the sign making workshop as it comes with very few costly extras. The machine is highly specified in its standard configuration and all the customer really needs to decide is the size of the router table.

Epson (above) demonstrated the SureColor SC-S30600. The new 64-inch SureColor SCS30600 is a four colour printer, which has been designed from the ground up to offer efficient and environmentally friendly signage print production.

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development have issued figures that show for the first time that stress is the most common cause of long-term sickness absence for both manual and non-manual workers.

Time to focus again There hasn’t been much cheer over the winter so the sight of lots of people buying has got to be good news. Martin Christie writes…

T

he first signs of Spring perhaps. And much like the changeable economy, storms the day before heralded a bright sunny sky as one of Mr Branson’s smart tilting trains delivered me to Birmingham International, station drop off for the adjacent National Exhibition Centre.

Years ago I would have thought nothing of driving there but nowadays clogged motorways and general congestion make the roads a fairly hostile environment for anyone keen to retain sanity.

Instead I could enjoy the view through a carriage window of a countryside slowly turning green after the drab coating of the winter, and possibly hope this might be a better year than the one that went before.

Judging from the crowds packing the Focus on Imaging Exhibition, there is some reason to be optimistic after all the dread warnings of doom and gloom from those who should know better than to spread negative propaganda. I went on the Monday of the four day photographic show to avoid the usually manic public Sunday, or the last minute bargain hunt scramble that is the final Wednesday.

I was surprised then to find the same sort of numbers in the halls I would have expected on those days. And what’s more, they were parting with money for all of the many and varied items stacked on exhibitors stands.

I have been going to Focus for more than ten years, and as mentioned last month, have seen the progressive move from an industry that was dominated by film, to one that is predominantly digital, and the way the photo market has evolved, and the way the exhibitors have adapted to it is not so very different to that of our print industry. Some have embraced it with both hands and prospered, and others have tried to ignore it and been swept into the margins.

A decade ago, an electronic image device was a novelty. Now it is not only standard issue, but available in all shapes and sizes to suit pocket and purpose, and has spawned an enormous after market demand for all manner of accessories including software and hardware.

In many ways the digital revolution has greatly increased the possibilities of additional sales of add-on products with lots of hi-tech goodies, and clever gadgets. But equally it has retained some traditional crafts like framing and mounting which are in fact thriving.

Lion, who specialise in absolutely everything you could possibly want to finish a print, from hooks to entire cutting and stretching frames, reported one of their best expos ever including shifting most of their demo items from the stand. Magic Touch seem to find a niche in any show with their range of gift products, and always manage to come up with something new.

Of course, the high street photographic business has taken a pounding in recent years, as the popularity of print production something it relied heavily upon - has slumped in the face of the digital alternatives. Those that have survived have had to adapt to the new realities, and will need to continue to do so in a climate that will continue to evolve.

Not everyone in the industry was quite so enthusiastic about Focus judging from some comments in their trade magazines, and on website forums, with some hardcore photography specialists describing it as a glorified car boot sale. A little unkind, I think, and certainly very short sighted.

Many years ago, when I worked in the motorcycle industry, the same criticism was launched at their annual show at the NEC because of the amount of retailing of products at discount prices.High street

any high street dealer could afford to stock or store.

But there has to be a compromise. The temptation, when money is tight and the bean counters take charge, is to reduce stock - both the quantity and the range of items.

Here in Brighton this policy is very evident both in a branch of a major photographic chain, and in a stationery shop, again part of a large national business. The justification is often discarding items for which there is less demand. But if it is not in stock and on display, there will never be any demand for it - at least not one that can be picked up on an accountant’s radar. The result will be the gradual loss of footfall through the shop door, and loss of sales overall from the items which are stocked.

The aim has to be proactive to potential customers demand and not merely reactive to it.

That needs a good grasp of the total market place and its potential, not just a view as far as the end of the yard. I came away from the NEC very positive and enthusiastic about the year ahead and will be posting some products and possibilities in coming columns to boost our own little economies in the print shop.

bike dealers were dismayed to see boots and helmets on offer at prices little more than they could buy them themselves through the trade, or worse dumped at less than trade price to clear stock. Nothing is new. The retail market place continues and it is the high street motorcycle dealers that have been decimated.

Today the retail market place is the internet, where products can be found and prices set at an instant. But although the worldwide web may dictate sales policy, it cannot and never will completely replace over the counter sales. And this is where the photographic retail business and our own print on demand service are very similar.

What was very evident at the Focus exhibition, and is underlined every day at the retail counter, is that there is no substitute for having an item in your hand and inspecting it to generate a sale - assuming the item fits the necessary qualities.

The opportunity to seize the moment and purchase is something trawling a web page just does not create. The ‘must have’ moment is a very physical thing.

I fell victim to it myself having gone with the very best intentions of not spending any money and still parting with over a hundred pounds on things I just could not do without !

Of course the economies of scale of an exhibition mean that a vast amount of items can be on display and on sale - far more than

Arjowiggins Graphic joins WWF International Climate Savers Arjowiggins Graphic has told us that they just joined the ambitious WWF International Climate Savers programme.They join the list of worldwide companies such as Cola, Volvo, Sony or Nike signed up to the Climate Savers programme. Created more than 10 years ago it mobilises these leading multinational companies to cut their CO2 emissions and lead on the issue of climate change. They have demonstrated that it’s possible to reduce carbon footprint while growing the business and shareholder value.

Companies integrated in the Climate Savers Programme agree to reduce their CO2 emissions in accordance with an individual reduction target defined by WWF, the company and independent technical experts.

The agreed goal is set to be more ambitious than the company initial plan, which should position the company to lead its industry in the reduction of greenhouse gases.

Arjowiggins Graphic’s Climate Savers commitment is to reduce its greenhouse gas absolute emissions of 23% between 2007 and 2014, with a sub-target of 10% reduction for each ton of paper produced. This will be achieved thanks to the growth of recycled papers volumes, the biomass steam production at Dalum using wood residues and avoiding natural gas use, and the replacement of synthetic binders by natural ones.

The independent technical experts from Ecofys will monitor the progress on a yearly basis and oversee that Arjowiggins Graphic complies with its targets.

Ricoh Europe’s new carbon balanced printing proud to present ‘Green’ award Ricoh Europe is launching a Carbon Balanced Printing Programme, designed specifically for print service providers. It helps them to reduce the environmental impact of printing using Ricoh Pro production printing systems, and to provide a carbon neutral service to their clients. The programme, which is the first of its kind in Europe, is aimed at commercial printers and corporate print rooms and is accredited by the British Standards Institution (BSI).

The Carbon Balanced Printing Programme builds on the success of Ricoh’s award winning Sustainability Optimisation Programme, which offers carbon balanced printing to the office market. The new programme follows a three step process, enabling print service providers to; 1) analyse the carbon footprint of each print job; 2) optimise it by improving the way they work and; 3) neutralise the remaining, unavoidable emissions through carbon credits.

The first step involves an in-depth analysis of printing activity, to determine annual carbon emissions. Areas of analysis include the operation of Ricoh production systems, the paper used, energy consumed, delivery distances of supplies and travelling distances of our service engineers.

The second step involves optimisation of the print environment to make it more sustainable. A carbon calculator available through Ricoh’s Business Driver Programme determines the carbon generated per print job.

More environmentally responsible ways to print are then identified and implemented, such as using different types of recycled media. And through a carbon assessment, Ricoh consultants review the entire production process on an ongoing basis. As a result they will suggest further ways to minimise energy consumption, reduce waste and improve the recycling practices of both output and machine supplies.

The final step involves neutralising the remaining and unavoidable carbon emissions with Certified Emission Reductions. These carbon credits have been generated by clean energy projects in which Ricoh has invested. Print service

providers are then certified as a ‘Ricoh Carbon Balanced Printer’ and provided with tools and documentation they can use to confirm to end customers that their print job is carbon neutral.

Totalpost delivers on £100K ‘green’ cartridge plan Mailroom specialist Totalpost Services Plc has announced a further £40,000 investment towards plans to double the size of its cartridge refilling factory.

The company is already one of Britain’s largest suppliers of refilled franker cartridges and last year revealed details of a £60,000 development to help meet growing worldwide demand for recycled and remanufactured franking cartridges.

This additional investment will see a number of new roles created at Totalpost’s factory in Alston, Cumbria and since December 2011 the company will have trebled its workforce.

ILFORD BIOMEDIA SIGNS UP FOR ECOPRINT 2012 EcoPrint, the global print industry’s first exhibition dedicated to sustainable printing, is pleased to announce that ILFORD BioMedia is the latest to pledge its support.

CSN here, do you copy?

As major print industry players your opinion was requested in last month’s CSN ... what’s in a name? So what part of the print industry did you all report to work in?

Firstly thank you for the huge response from readers in all sections of quick print.

Whether you copy, print, or duplicate for your on-demand customers, maybe litho, disub, screen, even Xerox images onto media we wanted a title that embraces all in the instant part of the print industry.

Well the jury is still out as the response is still flowing in from print principals, managers and trade suppliers.

A common theme is that no one is interested in the printing process as it is definitely not important to the end-user, they do not care whether you use ink, toner, wax, laser, analogue or digital?

So back to our million impressions question?

Who are we and what are we doing?

Not many of us own up to copying any more although those long runs of “20 off each please” from hard copy originals are still very lucrative and not deliverable on most of our customers in house multi function, expensive to run desktop machinery.

So copying is dead, long live the copy shop!

We have a great suggestion to use the term, Communications, which I guess, is formerly known as prints, a joke that surprisingly only around 20 of you sent in!

Copy Shop News still needs a new title to best describe the changing industry we all work in.

Andy Payne at Konica Minolta makes a valid contribution: WYGIWYW: What You Get Is What You Wanted — although I don’t think that would work with B2C but businesses get WYSWIG is a recognised pneumonic for B2B. Why not just QPP for Quick Print Pro? Kerry Button at Intec Printers offered this: Interesting points you make and quite a difficult objective as I expect most of the replies will be emotive. The problem is that print is still struggling to find its new home amongst all the new social media applications and internet-based marketing. It absolutely does have a home and our industry needs to get to grips with how print enhances the effectiveness of other media. For my two pence worth I think the new title should reflect what we want print to do so my idea for the new title is “Communicating in Print” Both of the above are in the pot and head our short list but if you haven’t yet chipped in please do as this is your part of the print industry and promoting our print services under a universally renowned banner will help us all.

With a CSN revamp on the cards our intrepid artworker Dean Cook comments enthusiascilly here: Hi Pete, I really don’t think there is another term for Digital – its spectrum is far too wide, too powerful and varied for a number of print-related applications: Digital Printing; Digital Screen Printing; Digital Printing Services; Digital Printing Solutions; Digital Printing Systems; Digital Production Systems; Digital Production…it covers everything from the systems, the processes, the equipment, the industries, personalisation, sign-writing blah blah blah!

There is a US-based magazine called DPS – Digital Publishing Solutions Magazine which I found on page one of my web browser. This is only enhancing my belief we need to work with the words people and users easily associate with the industry.

It’s funny. You have a US cousin called Thomas Tetrault and he uses ‘Quick Printer’ in his editorial.

As a personal preference these are the names I would pursue: The Digital Printer; Digital Impressions; Print Point Magazine; Impression Magazine; Imprint Magazine; In-Print Magazine; Print Expert Magazine; Custom Printer Magazine; PDQ Magazine; Digital Print World Magazine; Quick Impressions.

Well done Deano, you are in the mix Sir with the most titles submitted from one reader.

What makes us different from those big run litho only factories? We are faster, quicker but never instant. Instant print sounds like a drive through take-away service, now why hasn’t anyone done that yet? MacPrint, Print King or KFC, Kettering Fused Copying.

If you don’t get involved with our name change and don’t mind what your customers call you then just sit and watch this space as we evolve into something new.

Roland DG at Printwear & Promotion 2012 Roland authorised dealers Grafityp, Xpres and KPRayner all reported strong interest in Roland printing and engraving solutions from the printwear and promotion community at February’s exhibition in Birmingham.

The Roland VersaSTUDIO BN-20 desktop printer cutter made its UK printwear market debut alongside the VersaUV LEF-12 at the exhibition, which was defined by high visitor numbers, signalling a positive outlook for the industry. Do you charge for artwork?

Well if your answer is no then close your print works now. As artwork is so often not measurable in time taken to develop, proof read and then of course add the author’s corrections, how can you offer to work for nothing forever?

It is not commercially viable to not charge for work produced, pre-press is where the profit is gained or lost. If only we could just print all day every day, easy to quote and win profitable business and no surprises. Well as we all know life is never that simple and a contingency to charge for your time is paramount.

It all starts with publishing an hourly rate for design and artwork of at least £40 per hour. You can still produce a proof for a simple business card in less than fifteen minutes, but charge the tenner. The time and use of expensive software is given away at our peril, as we owe a duty of care to our customers to keep the artwork safe and be there for a re-print in a year’s time. Now to do this we have to remain profitable. We are not a charity but in the frontline to donate artwork charges or maybe a bit of print but even so we have to be in business to do this.

All the print operatives in our own quick print shop have the skills to design ‘instant’ stationery and flyers. When the brief dictates time to be put aside for more complex design we sometimes have to make an appointment for this, as we hopefully are already busy.

Design is a skill, developed through training and experience; do not be afraid to charge for this. How much do you pay for professional services? Accountant’s hourly rates, or how about solicitors that are paid for on demand as they are essential to running a business. Now hang on, there wouldn’t be a business but for the print communications that make it function. Never under estimate your worth as a print service provider and please don’t ever give your artwork away, we’ll be watching!

Down here on the South Coast we introduce our designer as a separate entity with a separate business card, a bit like being at the dentist and having to see the hygienist.

Hopefully not so scary but still an improvement on our customers smiles. The practice is to divide the service so a separate charge is perceived and warranted.

When your designer wants to know why you charge £40 an hour and only pay her £7 remember to mention the overheads of the business and constant upgrades in software and of course the advertising that brings the punters in. Lay it on thick or you will have to go back to college and brush up your old cut and paste.

12. ‘Thanks A Lot’ - ‘Thanks A Lot’ is dramatically different from ‘Thanks’, a woman will say ‘Thanks A Lot’ when she is really ticked off at you, it is usually followed by the ‘Loud Sigh.’

This signifies that you have hurt her in some callous way. Be careful not to ask what is wrong after the ‘Loud Sigh’ as she will only tell you ‘Nothing’.
