Hello and thank you

Come on and celebrate!

By the time you read this, I will have been in my role for a few months and become more familiar with the many different strands that make up the MAF world – in particular, MAF Scotland.

A challenging few months full of steep learning curves have been made easier thanks to the love and support you’ve extended to me through your prayers and emails. I thank everyone who took the time to write – your warm welcome and kind words have touched and encouraged me immensely.

I’ve already had the pleasure of working with some of our faithful volunteers and supporters, and I see how passionate you are. I hope to meet more of you soon.

This is such an exciting time to be part of MAF and a real privilege to be leading the Scotland team. Looking ahead to 2020, we can reflect on a remarkable 75 years, celebrate what God has done through the power of flight and plan what we want to achieve over the coming years.

Together for the Kingdom.

This year, many events took place to commemorate the ‘D-Day landings’ — a military operation that was crucial in ending World War II. Thereafter, it took a tremendous effort by millions of people to bring peace again to the western world.

One of MAF’s founders, Stuart King, was part of that mass military force whose courage brought peace and joy to countless men, women and children throughout the world.

During the war, a few Christian airmen prayed regularly and consistently to the Lord for a way in which aircraft could be used to save lives and communities rather than destroy them. Within

weeks of the war ending, MAF was born.

In 2020, MAF will celebrate 75 years of a vision to serve the isolated, the hungry, the impoverished and those living in spiritual darkness. To mark our anniversary, I want to offer an MAF speaker to every church, group and gathering throughout Scotland.

I ask you to come together with us and celebrate 75 years of God’s great provision for MAF and the faithful, sacrificial service of those early MAF pioneers.

‘MAF really does change lives’ Head of MAF in Scotland Heather Malloch chats to Andy Martin about her path to this role and her passion for our mission Photos Heather Malloch

Welcome to MAF, Heather. Tell us a little about your home and family.

Home for me is Glasgow, where I was born and brought up. I’m married to Iain and we live on the outskirts of the city, in East Kilbride.

We have two grown-up children Amy and Ross, and also our little pup Brodie. He’s full of energy and nonsense, brings all of us joy and keeps Iain and me young!

How long have you been a Christian?

I was brought up in a loving home by Christian parents. I’ve always attended church, apart from a spell in my youth when I left for a few years and tried to do things my own way. Thankfully, I quickly realised that you can’t hide from the Lord and He soon brought me back again!

For the last 15 years, we’ve attended the same church, where I was very involved in overseas mission. As a couple, we recently felt God leading us from there to help Re:Hope plant a new church in the southside of Glasgow.

Between a new church and a new role with MAF, 2019 has been a really exciting year of change for me.

Time for a wee history lesson — what did you do before MAF? After school, I trained as a nurse and then as a health visitor. I’ve worked in various NHS roles and also in the charitable sector.

About seven years ago, while attending a Christian conference, the Lord spoke to me.

Out of that conversation — and many others with Him — was born Agape Wellbeing, a health and well-being charity which reaches out to the community’s most marginalised people.

The charity has been operating for five years and is now in the hands of a very capable manager. This has allowed me to turn my attention to MAF. Are there any aspects of your role within MAF that make you think ‘Wow!’?

All of it! I love how the organisation reaches out to the world’s most needy and vulnerable people, in places where they otherwise wouldn’t get help easily.

I love that we show the love of Jesus through our practical work but also that we bring men, women and children the Good News of Christ.

What we do really does transform lives.

How would you like to see MAF in Scotland develop and grow under your guidance?

I would like MAF Scotland to continue being a catalyst for the expansion of MAF’s worldwide

work. The earth is full of lost people who desperately need to know the touch of our Heavenly Father.

By continuing to increase our prayer and financial support — and our volunteer base — we will see more lives truly changed for the better.

Finally, and I think most importantly, how can our supporters pray for you as you settle into your post?

I know so many of our supporters have already been praying for me, and I‘ve appreciated the support and encouragement that this has given me so much.

Going forward, as we make changes in the team and target new untapped areas of development, I’d appreciate your ongoing prayers for wisdom, to hear God’s leading clearly and for the growth and unity of the team.

Be part of MAF Scotland!

We have so many great volunteer opportunities. Please pray over them and let me know how you would like to serve this exciting and unique ministry Speaker Become part of our frontfacing team. Visit churches, clubs and groups to share MAF’s vision through audio-visual presentations. Full training and resources will be provided.

Shorter days and longer nights are a sure sign the annual MAF Volunteer Conference is just around the corner.

The conference is a free event that provides an excellent opportunity for us to encourage eachother. On 26 October, we’ll celebrate what the Lord has done for us and pray that He will uphold our future work.

We’ll also launch new resources that will help us celebrate 2020: MAF’s 75th anniversary.

There will be several guest speakers — some of whom will Skype in directly from our worldwide programmes. This year, we’re delighted to welcome the Evangelical Alliance’s Reverend Fred Drummond, who will start the day with inspirational words from Scripture.

We will also be offering virtual visits to Uganda (pictured above), Liberia and Arnhem Land and a rare chance to meet several of our UK-based MAF staff.

Prayer Group Leader We would love to see MAF prayer groups in every city, town and village right around Scotland – maybe even in your home! Prayer literature, posters and staff prayer cards will all be provided. Prayer groups can meet weekly, fortnightly or monthly.

Church Representative Be the MAF contact within your congregation.

Display posters, provide prayer materials and arrange visits from MAF speakers for your church groups.

Events Volunteer Do you like big Christian festivals? Why not attend them as an MAF representative? We’ll train, transport and feed you — there’s even an MAF uniform! It’s a great way to enjoy an event and serve with MAF at the same time.
