CHAIRMAIN’S REPORT

“If we could but live for a short time some 200 years hence; if we could but live a few moments in eternity and from these vantage points look back and survey the spiritual efforts now being put forth for the spreading of the gospel throughout the world, we would no doubt find that one of the greatest single movements in this or any age was the Missionary Aviation Fellowship”

(Challenge newspaper April 25 1946)

3 | ANNUAL REPORT 2023 www.maf.org.nz

This article goes on to challenge “every missionary minded Christian in New Zealand” to give to the fledgling movement. We look back with admiration at the vision, commitment and tenacity of those who have gone before us. Some 78 years on from this article we have come a long way. And yet, we still have a long way to go to bring help, hope and healing to the world’s most isolated people. How will eternity view us? How have we progressed in reaching every missionary minded Christian in New Zealand? Is our vision to grow MAF in New Zealand as bold as this author was back in 1946?

MAF International has a bold vision to grow the work globally, with a growing team of skilled and committed people, modern fit for purpose aircraft with fleet renewal, and appropriate facilities in key locations. The task is great, but our God is greater, and it is in Him that we ‘live and move and have our being’. In September 2023 at the MAF global forum the 19 MAF member groups gathered to consider key issues facing MAF. Primary amongst them was to begin considering how as resourcing groups we may work in greater coordination with one another to raise the awareness and support of MAF globally. This has led to a review which is currently underway.

At a more local level, in New Zealand, we are facing a changing legislative environment with a new Incorporated Societies Act coming into force. As MAF NZ is an incorporated society we have two choices. One, we re-register as an Incorporated Society under the new Act, with a modified constitution that complies with the new Act. Or two, we change to a trust structure. The board is considering both options and has also sought legal counsel. Primarily, whatever structure is chosen, it must continue to advance the core vision and purposes of MAF. Any change will require the endorsement of members at a subsequent AGM or special general meeting and full information will be provided when it is available.

Vision and purpose trump structure and strategy any day of the week. However good structure with sound strategy delivers on vision and purpose. Would you join with me in praying that we may indeed reach “every missionary minded Christian in New Zealand”.

CEO’S REPORT

“Jesus

Came To Them And Said, “All Authority In Heaven And On Earth Has Been Given To Me. Therefore, Go And Make Disciples Of All Nations, Baptising Them In The Name Of The Father And Of The Son And Of The Holy Spirit, And Teaching Them To Obey Everything I Have Commanded You. And Surely, I Am With You Always, To The Very End Of The Age.”

MATTHEW 28:18-20

In the 79 years since Murray Kendon first articulated the need for Mission Aviation Fellowship, the purpose of this ministry has never changed. We go to the remotest places of the world on the command of our Lord Jesus Christ. There are many remote communities that have never heard the gospel message as there are many people groups who need hope, help and healing through the message of Jesus Christ. Sometimes, as men and women who love aviation, it can be easy to forget that there is a greater reason for our existence. The need is great and even though there are many obstacles to overcome, we must continue with the Lord’s help to serve remote people to ensure they hear about the love of Jesus Christ.

2023 was a year when we were able to use the new facility of the KendonStrong MAF Centre. Having completed the build late the previous year, we held a building dedication event early April where 200 people attended. It was a beautiful day where we could have the hanger door open and enjoy the airport activity and views while giving thanks to the Lord and dedicating the facility to His service. During the year I have worked hard to gain Code of Compliance Certificate for the building. This wasn’t granted however until early 2024.

We held our first open day event in the MAF hanger in February this year and were very encouraged by the turnout and the number of enquires and people who would like to partner with MAF. Bill Harding came up from Nelson to share in the open day event delivering a seminar.

5 | ANNUAL REPORT 2023 www.maf.org.nz

During the middle months of the year, we struggled with a downturn in financial income which meant significant tightening of the purse strings. But praise the Lord, our fiscal status has improved, and we look forward to further development and growth in the months and years ahead.

During the year we were fortunate to have a Bible College student as an intern. James Bassett was studying at Eastwest Bible College in Gordonton. His task was to do foundational work for the formation of a youth programme called Co-Pilot. Also during the year we made application to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade for a contract to help care for victims of domestic violence in Timor Leste. Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful with our application which was a significant disappointment to the team in Timor Leste.

Now that the hangar renovation is complete we are moving into a capacity building phase to grow the organisation so that we can achieve greater results with increased funding and recruitment. We received a grant to employ two new staff. Faith is a part time as a fundraiser and Stephen has come onboard to grow our youth ministry called Co-Pilot. Faith was previously with CAP. Stephen is an experienced Youth Pastor.

The needs within MAF International are huge and there is significant motivation for MAF NZ to provide larger resources for MAF International. Please pray with us as we strategise and plan for increased growth.

Transitioning from 2023 to 2024 we have had some staff changes. Fiona Vincent our Finance Manager had a joint role of Finance Manager for MAFI in the Asia Pacific. Fiona has needed to concentrate on that latter role, so Rachelle Shilston has been employed in our Tauranga office. Special thanks to Fiona for her wise professional service to MAF NZ. Abby Vincent has also left our employ to concentrate on her studies. She was a valuable asset to the set up of the Kendon-Strong MAF Centre.

Richard West Memorial Foundation

The value of the Richard West Memorial fund is $412,674 which is similar to the previous year. There have been no disbursements from this fund during the 2023 year as no pilots were recruited. It is the desire of the MAF NZ Board and the West family that this foundation grow to one million dollars, so it is a lasting legacy to help future MAF pilots to be mission ready. I would be keen to discuss with anyone who is interested to support this foundation.

CESSNA 206 ZK-MAF

We continue to benefit greatly from the availability of the C206 aircraft. It is a valuable asset in our relationship building and promotional arsenal. Having a permanent home out of the weather has been a significant benefit to the longevity and ease of operation for the aeroplane.

In August this year the engine will become time expired so therefore needs an overhaul. We are fundraising for the cost of the required maintenance.

The aircraft continues to be used by the Tauranga Aeroclub and Waikato Aviation. This is a good income stream to offset ownership costs.

Thanks to: William Nicol (Chief Pilot), Colin McIntosh (Maintenance Controller) and Solo Wings, Tauranga (Maintenance Provider)

KENDON-STRONG MAF CENTRE

The new MAF Centre has become a valuable asset to the functioning of MAF New Zealand. All staff love to come to work at the facility.

We have developed income streams through the KendonStrong MAF Centre. The apartment when not being used for overseas missionaries or guests, is being rented out through Airbnb. We continue to have three aircraft renting space on the hangar floor and just recently have hired out our boardroom for Company meetings.

We take bookings for the Apartment. Book either through AirBnB by searching on Google “The Apartment @ Tauranga Airport” or email the office at info@maf.org.nz, Ph 0800 87 85 88

The Board room is also available for private functions or meetings.

The Vision for the MAF Centre is that we be “open for business” for people to come and visit to hear about MAF or just to say hi. Please feel free to visit. We would love to welcome you. Also bring your group to come and hear about MAF’s life saving work.

FLYING FOR LIFE

Charitable Trust

The Flying for Life Trust has continued to operate to support MAF International through directing donations received to projects around the World through a number of relief projects.

The trust board has met and approved funds with the following distributed during the year:

• MAF South Sudan Relief and Development Flights (13.5%),

• Kenya Relief and Development Flying (19%)

• Temor Leste Medivacs (3.8%)

• Education Flying PNG (55%)

Each of the projects were selected by MAF International in consideration of our criteria.

There were also additional funds raised via Jerry Can Fuel appeal for aviation fuel (4.5%) and The Kagamuga Development in PNG (3%) which have also been channelled via the trust.

FFLT Trustees know each of these MAF projects will bring needed relief in a practical way. Details on these projects are provided by MAF International to the FFLT and are available from the MAF office if desired.

We greatly appreciate all those who have continued to invest in the international work of MAF and the various projects that bring relief and hope to the lives of many people.

As always, a huge thank you to Mark and the MAF office staff who oversee and complete the financial processes necessary for operating the Trust accounts.

In addition, my thanks go to the other trustees Jim and Lawrence for their time and expertise. The accounts were presented for Audit which was again successfully completed by Audit Integrity Ltd for the 2023 period.

2023 FINANCE REPORT

We want to give thanks to our Heavenly Father for supplying all our needs despite a reduction in donations and an increase in costs. A deficit of $68,580 is shown for the year ended 31 December 2023. We are grateful that the downward trajectory for income was reversed in November with extra gifts received from our generous and faithful supporters and the Hangar Apartment was rented out on AirBnB. The new year, 2024, has had a very positive start and we are tracking ahead of Budget towards a surplus once again.

The financial statements have been audited and given a clear audit opinion.

Income/ Distributions

Donations are channeled through two entities – MAF NZ for work within NZ, such as recruitment, advertising

and training of staff in preparation for mission; and Flying for Life Charitable Trust (FFL) for approved overseas projects. The 2023 project distributions have included: aviation fuel through the Jerry Can appeal, medevacs in Timor-Leste, medical and health flying in South Sudan, relief and development flying in Kenya, education flying in Papua New Guinea, and a special appeal for the Kagamuga Development in Papua New Guinea.

Expenditure

Total expenses of $987k were 13% more than 2022. The increase was spread across all costs but in particular travel and promotions were higher.
