2020 Ministry Highlights 13,992 flights supported the work of missionaries, evangelists, doctors, relief workers, Bible translators, and teachers in remote areas. Served 386 organizations served and transported 35,366 passengers. •

MAF’s 42 airplanes provide safe and reliable transportation. Every flight hour saves 5 days of arduous travel by foot in challenging terrain or dangerous areas.

•

When two massive hurricanes, Eta and Iota, struck three Central America countries just two weeks apart, MAF responded with aerial surveys, food and supplies, medical teams and equipment, clean water systems, and pastors to train local leaders in trauma counseling.

Utilized 461 different airstrips and water landing sites. Supported the work of 68 Bible translation projects. Delivered 4.9 million pounds of cargo. •

MAF’s disaster response team used MAF-US and affiliate aircraft that flew 21 different agencies and organizations, carried 280 passengers, delivered 45,906 pounds of relief cargo, and landed at 18 destinations in the relief effort.

The year 2020 was unprecedented, with COVID-19 impacting the operations of MAF-US. Government-imposed travel restrictions reduced the number of flight hours, partner organizations left the field, some MAF staff temporarily departed due to health issues, and replacement staff couldn’t readily enter a program country due to restrictions. While MAF continued to serve in many capacities, normal operations were impacted.

Mission Aviation Fellowship operates one of the most cost-effective ministries in the mission world, yet one of the most expensive. The tools we use are some of the costliest: airplanes and related infrastructure, satellite technology, computers, and HF/VHF radio networks. Because of this, many assets are represented on the financial statement. When comparing MAF’s asset position to that of other mission organizations, the capital-intensive nature of the aviation services MAF provides must be considered.

MAF receives its income primarily from contributions (81 percent) and fees for services (17 percent). Essentially all revenue for services is generated outside the United States, primarily in Africa and Asia. Mission Aviation Fellowship is a not-for-profit organization exempt from federal income taxes and under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. A complete financial statement and independent auditors’ report is available upon request.
