W
ar and tribal conflicts in parts of Africa continue to impact people’s lives and tear families apart. Life is a struggle, and in many parts of the continent, thousands of displaced people live in refugee camps. Without access to proper shelter and medical care, many have fallen victim to disease, and malnutrition brought about by population displacement.
Since 1998 an estimated 4 million people–primarily women, children, and the elderly–have died as a result of the civil war and tribal unrest throughout the Congo. A continuing challenge for geographically isolated Africans is accessibility to adequate healthcare, due to a poor infrastructure. Many families
and orphan children have very limited access to lifesaving medicines, vaccines, surgical procedures, medical supplies, and health education. Spiritual darkness blankets Africa with centuries of fighting and greed, coupled with ageold traditions of witchcraft and tribalism that create barriers to sharing the Gospel. The instability and violence across Africa have greatly diminished the western missionary presence, once the backbone of church planting and growth. Transfor mation for isolated people–physically and spiritually–can come about through a commitment to God’s call to make a difference where most needed.

ometimes the call comes on Saturday. In the Congo, that generally means two things: Either the governor needs a special charter, or the LRA has just attacked a village. This rebel group terrorizes whole villages, doing unimaginable things, from kidnapping to killing the innocent. Not only does MAF provide emergency evacuations, but it also works with organizations like Doctors Without Borders
(MSF), who are treating victims of the deadly attacks. In Mozambique, the call may summon MAF’s help to transport a construction team that is building a new medical clinic, in addition to the regular flights for MozMed, to care for the people along the Nampula coast. In Lesotho, the threat comes in the form of malaria, and the call comes from one of several organizations who are flying to the remote villages with vaccines and treatments. MAF has served on the continent of Africa for more than 50 years and has remained committed to the call. As long as there is a need in Africa, MAF will be there to be the hands and feet of Jesus to those who are hurting.

• MAF provides support for Wycliffe Bible Translators and its language projects, serving among more than one million unreached people. • MAF helps support evangelism outreach by Africa Inland Mission to the Mwanis, one of Africa’s least-reached people groups, and assists New Tribes Mission with distributing Bible lessons for 30,000 unreached people.

In addition, MAF flights deliver supplies to these remote missionaries. • Chaplaincy programs provide visits from the MAF Basotho chaplain to hospitals and patients’ home villages to disciple and evangelize.

• MAF transports Congolese church leaders to provide a critical reconciliation ministry among warring tribes and reunite families separated by war.

MAF flies Doctors Without Borders staff to deliver vaccines, medical supplies, and medical personnel to 24 mobile clinics. In a single month, MAF carries more than 100 staff members and 14,000 pounds of cargo. MAF provided transportation for World Health Organization while they did research on the deadly monkeypox, leading to plans for new treatment and ultimate eradication.

The MozMed flying doctor service provides the only healthcare in small villages along the Nampula coast. Visits by medical teams provide care to 500 patients each month. MAF’s flights enable the distribution of insecticidetreated bed nets to support disease abatement programs.

MAF flies Samaritan’s Purse food and emergency supplies to victims of tribal hostilities.

Mali
MAF builds four wells a year, providing a source of fresh water and employing Malian workers. Through the use of the “JESUS” film, each village also hears about living water.
Lesotho
Nutritional support is offered to HIV patients, pregnant women, children, and others who show clinical signs of malnutrition. MAF provides transportation and support for eight remote, rural health clinics providing the only medical care for a population of 235,000 people.

Some airstrips and mission bases in DRC have been closed because of war and violence. In the coming year, MAF hopes to reopen routes that have not had service since the war.

With MozMed in Mozambique, MAF is expanding medical services to Zambezia province, with future expansion plans to the northern regions where the need is great.

MAF has written a five-year project plan to open five additional airstrips in remote areas of Lesotho which includes Mamohau, a new location for a Partners in Health hospital.
Fleet Needs for the Future In addition to annual fund needs which will ensure continuing services in Africa through 2012, seven new planes are needed over the next three years to renew the Africa fleet, as well as one new hangar in Lesotho. The cost and availability of avgas have made it prohibitive and avgas-dependent aircraft must be replaced with jet-fueled options.
How much does $100 buy? At the time of this writing, aviation gasoline (avgas) in Kinshasa, Congo, is $19 per gallon. By comparison, jet fuel in Congo is near $5 per gallon.
