emmed in by mountains and dense jungle, Bungayan is one of the most difficult airstrips in Kalimantan, Indonesia. Our pilots rarely go there, and yet, “We’re the only people that go there … ever,” says MAF pilot Dave Forney. So when a medevac request came in from this village in spring 2013, MAF did not hesitate to respond.

Forney arrived at Bungayan to discover seven villagers were now in need of evacuation. It took some time for the first passengers to arrive to the airstrip from the 1.5 hour trek from the village. When the first person showed up, Forney thought he looked pretty sick. It turned out he was just the messenger! The man informed him, “I’m way better than the other guys. They’re carrying them on stretchers.”

Soon the others arrived, with red marks all over their faces and hands, and barely functioning.

It must be bad, thought Forney. Due to the short airstrip and weight limitations, he could only take two passengers at a time in the

Cessna 206. Forney made several trips, going back and forth to Long Bawan where MAF flies regularly. This five-minute flight replaced a full day of walking, which would have been nearly impossible when the people were so ill.

“A couple days later they called us again, and the same thing: two handfuls of people,” said Forney.

By the third day the illness was determined to be measles, and a new plan was devised.

This time MAF flew a doctor in to treat the sick and to immunize everyone in the surrounding area—approximately 500 people. MAF returned later in the week to take the doctor back out Thankfully, no fatalities were reported!

MAF pilots are grateful to play a role in stopping outbreaks like this—with the right tools and skills to get into hard-to-reach places.

FLY MEDICAL SUPPLIES - so remote clinics can better meet needs Issues like medical emergencies and infectious diseases are often magnified in isolated places where medical care is sometimes not readily available. Helping provide medical supplies can sometimes mean the difference between life and death for a person in need.

In addition, planeloads of medicine are transported to restock pharmacies at mission hospitals or to combat a serious outbreak.

DELIVER HOPE providing spiritual help

J

esus so radically altered the lives of His followers that they left their homes and families to shout the message of God’s love to the far corners of the world. These earliest missionaries set out from Jerusalem on foot, on horseback, and in wooden ships to the “ends of the earth.”

Today “ends of the earth” means places like Kalimantan, Central Asia, Papua, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Missionaries still take the same message Paul and Peter proclaimed—they are just getting there a different way …

MAF planes carry Bibles, missionaries, and pastors to places—and to people—that might otherwise be unreachable. MAF partners with hundreds of churches and organizations globally, with the goal of sharing the Gospel with those people.

Sefiri is one of the people working with MAF to reach that goal. He serves as MAF chaplain in the African country of Lesotho to

reach his fellow Basotho people. Sefiri meets Basotho villagers who have been flown to hospitals in the city of Maseru where he is able to share Christ with them. MAF pilots then fly Sefiri into remote mountain regions to follow up with the patients and minister to their communities. This allows Sefiri to stay connected with these people as they grow in their relationships with God. The response among the Basotho people has been incredible.

“I thank God about the lives touched through us as MAF Lesotho,” said Sefiri.

Across the world, MAF staff like Sefiri strive to share Christ’s love with isolated people. The mode of transportation they use is a far cry from Paul’s wooden ships—yet the message MAF planes carry is changing lives just as radically today in Indonesia and Africa as it did in Judea and Rome two millennia ago.

The message is simple: “For God so loved the world, He sent His only Son …”
