Xi stresses developing religions in Chinese context BEIJING, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) Chinese President Xi Jinping has stressed upholding the principle of developing religions in the Chinese context, and providing active guidance for the adaptation of religions to socialist society.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks while addressing a national conference on work related to religious affairs, held from Friday to Saturday in Beijing.

Xi highlighted fully implementing the Party's theory on religious affairs in the new era, the basic policy on religious affairs, and the policy on the freedom of religious belief.

He required religious groups to strengthen their self-management and emphasized the need to improve the rule of law in religious affairs governance.

Efforts are needed to better rally and guide religious believers to work together with the general public to develop China into a great modern socialist country in all respects and realize the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation, he noted.

The conference, presided over by Li Keqiang, was attended by other senior leaders Li Zhanshu, Wang Huning, Zhao

Leji and Han Zheng. Wang Yang made concluding remarks.

Noting progress in the work related to religious affairs since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, Xi said religions in China have increasingly been Chinese in orientation and religious groups have kept enhancing their recognition of the motherland, the Chinese nation, the Chinese culture, the CPC and socialism with Chinese characteristics.

The CPC Central Committee has put forward a slew of new concepts and measures on religious work since the 18th CPC National Congress, Xi said.

Stressing the importance of religious affairs in the work of the Party and the state, Xi highlighted the need to establish robust leadership, uphold and develop a religious theory of socialism with Chinese characteristics, work in line with the Party's basic policy on religious affairs, and uphold the principle that religions in China must be Chinese in orientation.

Xi also demanded efforts to rally vast religious believers around the Party and government, foster positive and healthy relations among religions, support religious groups in strengthening self-building, and improve the management of religious work under the rule of law.

Xi emphasized full and faithful implementation of the Party's policy on freedom of religious belief, respecting people's religious beliefs, managing religious affairs in accordance with the law, adhering to the principle of independence and selfmanagement, and actively guiding religions to adapt to the socialist society.

He said it is imperative to further uphold the principle that religions in China must be Chinese in orientation, strengthen the management of online religious affairs,

and effectively address prominent problems that affect the sound inheritance of religions in China.

Xi stressed supporting and guiding religious circles to improve their selfeducation, self-management and selfdiscipline, urging full and strict governance of religions.

Religious activities should be carried out within the scope stipulated by laws and regulations, and should not impair the health of citizens, offend public order and good morals, interfere with educational, judicial and administrative affairs as well as social life, Xi said.

Xi emphasized the training of a team of Party and government officials who are adept at the Marxist view on religion, familiar with religious affairs, and competent to engage in work related to religious believers.

Xi also urged fostering a group of religious figures who are politically reliable, have noble characters and religious accomplishments, and can play their role at critical times.

Xi also stressed improving education and work mechanisms related to religions.

Li Keqiang said Xi's remarks have charted the course and provided fundamental guidance for the work on religious affairs in the new era.

Wang Yang said all localities and departments must take studying and implementing the spirit of the conference as an important political task, and ensure the CPC Central Committee's decisions and arrangements are earnestly implemented.

Xi made the remarks when delivering a speech via video at the opening ceremony of the 2021 Understanding China Conference (Guangzhou) in Guangzhou, south China's Guangdong Province.

The world is experiencing changes unseen in a century which, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, have

brought the world into a period of fluidity and transformation, Xi said in the speech.

It is all the more important for us to exchange views, have more interactions and cooperation, and contribute our wisdom and strengths to a joint response to global challenges at such a juncture, he noted.

"As I have pointed out, 'To understand China today, one must learn to understand the CPC'," Xi said.

Noting this year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the CPC, Xi said that the CPC has rallied and led the Chinese people in making unremitting efforts that have fundamentally changed the future and destiny of the Chinese people and exerted a profound impact on the course of world history over the past century.

Not long ago, the sixth plenary session of the 19th CPC Central Committee was successfully concluded with the adoption of the Resolution on the Major Achievements and Historical Experience of the Party over the Past Century, he said, adding that going forward, the CPC will draw strength from history, forge ahead for a

Chinese tea culture traced back to 400 B.C. JINAN, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -

An archaeological team from Shandong University, in east China's Shandong Province, has found the earliest known tea remains in the world, dating back about 2,400 years.

The discovery traced physical evidence of the origin of China's tea culture back to the early stage of the Warring States Period (475-221 B.C.), namely from 453 B.C. to 410 B.C. It extends the age of the beverage, as suggested by previous studies, by more than 300 years.

The tea samples, which have proved to be the residues of brewed tea, were excavated from ancient tombs in Zoucheng, Shandong Province.

Chinese researchers store information in eletrode-based DNA sequences

NANJING, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -Chinese researchers were able to store text information contained in DNA sequences on an electrode and retrieved it accurately.

DNA storage is a technology that encodes biological DNA molecules and stores information on DNA sequences, which can better meet the needs of larger capacity and faster data storage, said Liu Hong, a professor at Southeast University in east China's Jiangsu Province.

With the help of electrochemical method, the research team led by Liu encoded text information into DNA sequences and stored it on an electrode -- a breakthrough in DNA storage technology.

Currently, DNA storage technologies mostly require large equip-

ment and DNA synthesis and sequencing are separated, which leads to a relatively complicated operation, Liu said.

In the team's research results published in the journal Science Advances, an integration of DNA synthesis and sequencing on a single electrode with scalability was reported.

"The instruments and equipment are miniaturized," Liu added.

Also, by attaching DNA sequences to different electrodes, the technology developed by the team has the advantage of being easy and accurate to retrieve information.

"We only need to find the corresponding electrode when a piece of information is needed," Liu said.

American style gravely ill with money politics, elite rule, dysfunctional system The Foreign Ministry released a report on democracy in the United States on Sunday, exposing the deficiencies and abuse of democracy in the country as well as the harm of its exporting such democracy.

The report, titled "The State of Democracy in the United States", based on facts and expert opinions, said it is hoped the US will improve its system and practices of democracy and change its way of interacting with other countries.

Democracy in the US has been "alienated and degenerated" over the years and has increasingly deviated from the essence of democracy and its original design, the report said.

The self-styled American democracy is now gravely ill with money politics, elite rule, political polarization and a dysfunctional system, it said.

That US democracy has gone wrong is reflected in the country's practices and

events, including the Capitol riot on Jan 6, its entrenched racism and tragic mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a result, "American-style democracy can hardly uphold public order and ethics, nor advance public wellbeing to the fullest", the report said.

The US, despite the structural flaws and the problematic practice of its democratic system, has attempted to model other countries after its own image and export its brand of democracy.

Such entirely undemocratic attempts are at odds with the core values and tenets of democracy, the report said.

Beijing has urged Washington on many occasions to get to work in earnest to ensure its people's democratic rights and improve its system of democracy as well as undertake more international responsibilities and provide more public goods to the world.

"It would be totally undemocratic to measure the diverse political systems in the world with a single yardstick or examine different political civilizations from a single perspective," said the report.

Su Xiaohui, deputy director of the China Institute of International Studies' Department of American Studies, said the report reveals that the US is by no means an exemplary model of democracy.

"With its mounting internal problems, the

US still points fingers at others and pushes for what it calls 'democratic transition', plunging many regions and countries into turmoil, conflict and disaster, which shows its hypocrisy," Su said.

Su cited the Capitol riot as saying that even Washington's allies and partners have spotted the malaise of US-style democracy.

Diao Daming, an associate professor of US studies at Renmin University of China, said the report exposes US democratic chaos in an objective and comprehensive manner and plays a positive role in helping the world understand its state of democracy.

"China's intention is not to contend with the US for the definition of democracy, nor does it fight for the so-called position of 'beacon of democracy'," he said.

Diao said the report, which is rich with facts and tight logic and represents various views, including those of US experts, also reflects the universal concerns of the international community about US -style democracy.

As for the "Summit for Democracy" to be held by the US, he said it had nothing to do with democracy and was a move by the US to engage in group politics and try to achieve a hegemonic agenda in the name of democracy.

China's research ship Tansuo-1 returns from deep-ocean expedition SANYA, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) China's scientific research ship Tansuo-1 returned to a port in the city of Sanya, in south China's Hainan Province, on Sunday, after complet-

ing its deep-ocean expedition to the Mariana Trench.

The vessel, which carries the deep-sea manned submersible Fendouzhe (Striver), berthed on Sunday morning, according to the Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

During the 53-day expedition, which started on Oct. 14, the China-built Fendouzhe successfully completed 23 dives, six of which exceeded a depth of 10,000 meters.

Scientific researchers collected several large organisms, in-situ micro-organisms, sediments and rock samples, accumulating valuable data for use in genetic research on the area and understanding its geological structure,

according to the institute.

During the voyage, Chinese research teams participating in the expedition jointly launched the Mariana Consensus. The consensus calls for the establishment of a standardized system for deep-sea expeditions to realize the long-term preservation and sharing of deepocean scientific samples and data, so as to achieve international cooperation on deep-sea expeditions.

The team also launched the Mariana Trench Environment and Ecology Research Project (MEER) during the expedition. The project aims to invite more researchers from home and abroad to join in the MEER, so as to tackle major scientific issues together, such as the origins of life and environmental adaptation, biodiversity and climate change, among others.
