Welcome to our Fall Score Newsletter Greetings to all the readers of The Score, By now, we would have played our opening concerts of the 2020–21 season and be in final preparations for our December concert. I can’t begin to tell you how much I miss the orchestra members as well as all our friends of the Symphony. The pandemic has afforded me time, however, to reflect on the achievements of our orchestra over the years. Achievements in artistry, outreach and education, financial growth and stability, and now, new initiatives and commitment to diversity. I am particularly grateful to Rick Mackie and Ann Bowen for their extraordinary efforts on behalf of our musicians to do whatever the MSO can to financially to help alleviate the extreme hardships faced by many of them during this pandemic, which has been particularly harsh on the performing arts. Our musicians have such refined skills both technically as well as musically, that reflect years of devotion to mastering their instruments.

While they continue to practice to stay in shape, it is the goal of perfecting something for you to hear live that drives their commitment. So we must pray that this pandemic will end and we can go back to doing what we love and what we are here for.

I know our friends and donors in the audience will be there for us when the time is right. In addition to exciting streamed organ performances by Greg Zelek and Paul Jacobs, I do hope all of you will take advantage of our online offerings that we have been unfolding for the past seven months. Our MSO staff has been working non-stop to bring you online features that you can stream into your living room and feel the presence of the orchestra in your daily lives. These include performances as well as conversations with our musicians and many young soloists from our Final Forte competitions. Casey Oelkers and Peter Rodgers have led the way in creating and supporting these programs, and Aaron Krish has been keeping our ticket buyers and subscribers current with our concert cancellations and future plans. The entire MSO team is working passionately on your behalf.

It is amazing in many ways that it is already November. When everything came to a halt last March I thought I would never get through the summer. But time has actually sped by, and most of us are figuring out how to negotiate some kind of a meaningful life through all this. My greatest concern, however, is for the people who have lost one or more sources of income during this time. I do hope all of you will join in helping to make our Musicians’ Relief Fund a success so we can continue to compensate our musicians for work lost during the pandemic. In the meantime, check us out online, keep great music in your life and let it nourish and remind you of what we so look forward to return to when this is finally behind us.

What is unique about your instrument?

Playing bassoon is all about making reeds! Everything is dependent on that, but reeds are fickle friends.

Professional double reed musicians generally make their own reeds from the plant material arundo donax, also known as cane. Each piece of cane is individual. No matter how consistent we are in our reed making skills, every single reed is different. To be honest, if I had known my entire life was going to be dependent on

reeds, I might have made another choice! – Cindy Cameron, Principal Bassoon The pedals on the harp are one of the most unique things about the instrument. For those who don’t know, there are seven pedals at the bottom of the harp with three notches that are manipulated by the feet while we play. The pedals change pitch on the strings from flat to natural to sharp. When harpists change keys or play accidentals, our feet have to do the work. One of the first steps to prepare a part for a rehearsal is to go through and indicate in the music where all the pedal changes need to happen. During very difficult passages, the most treacherous thing is navigating the pedals, because if I miss one I will end up in a completely different key! – Johanna Wienholts, Principal Harp

Tell us about what happens during rehearsals from your point of view?

Because I am a section of one, the most important things to determine in rehearsal are 1. When to come in, and 2. Balance. Sometimes I am counting for entire movements and come in alone at the very end, and if I lose focus in rehearsals I won’t feel confident in my entrances during the performances! of the harp project in different ways. Often times the top of the harp in the higher register cuts through thick instrumentation while the low register on the harp doesn’t come through very much at all. Only in rehearsal in the hall can we really determine how much to project and when. – Johanna Wienholts, Principal Harp Percussion serves a unique role in the symphony orchestra. As we often create sounds that supplement or “color” the orchestration, we are very used to waiting extended periods until that perfect moment when our color contributes in impactful ways. It is very possible that we may only play a couple of notes in a piece or movement. Our job is to be fully prepared for that one note. To do this we must know everything else that is happening in the piece so that we do not get lost before the “big moment.” A great deal of our rehearsal time is spent with a score becoming as familiar as possible with everything happening so that we are fully confident to add our glorious moment of color. – Anthony Di Sanza, Principal Percussion

What are your routines leading up to a concert performance?

I usually take a nap in the afternoon for about an hour if I can, and I avoid eating much, especially not anything spicy! – Stephanie Jutt, Principal Flute I check twice or more to make sure I have the music and equipment before I leave home, and leave with plenty of time to have a flat tire or be stopped by a train. Then, I always try to leave my cell phone in the car, where I don’t have to worry about it going off back stage during the performance! – Greg Smith, Bass Clarinet

What is special about playing with the Madison Symphony Orchestra, John DeMain, and performing with your colleagues?

And the city of Madison is so blessed to have an orchestra with so many outreach programs, and the talent/skill level of musicians. John gets the best soloists here, while harboring a deep comradery within the orchestra. – Derek Handley, Cello It has been a privilege to play in the MSO all these years under Maestros DeMain and Johnson, and watch/hear the orchestra mature and grow. I think one of the differences between the MSO and other full time orchestras is that we come to play together for the love of the music, not just as a job. While there are many players where this is part of the multiple ensembles they put together as a musician, for many of us, this is our avocation and passion and not our primary job. There are so many special qualities of playing with the Madison Symphony and John DeMain. For all of us, playing in Overture Hall is of first importance. I think we all appreciate the warmth and clarity of sound in Overture Hall and the opportunities it affords the MSO. – Matthew Dahm, Violin

Tell us about what you most love to do outside of your career as a musician.

I am a die-hard road tripper and fitness enthusiast. While travel is completely on hold for the time being, I still start the day with a five mile run. I also immensely enjoy the company of friends and family, and long to have that back. – Chris Dozoryst, Principal Viola I love to read, I’m an avid bird-watcher, and a hiker. – Stephanie Jutt, Principal Flute Spend time outdoors with my family — my wife of 8 years Natalie, 4 year old Daniel and 1 year old Bennett.

What do your daily or weekly routines look like these days?

I’ve been spending as much time outside in the beautiful weather as possible!

I’ve adjusting my violin teaching routine to an online “virtual” lesson platform. It has taken some getting used to, but I think lessons have still been valuable for my students and for myself. Also, like many string players, I’ve used my extra practice time to delve into unaccompanied Bach. Bach’s solo string music is endlessly challenging and inspiring. – Matthew Dahm, Violin I home-school my 4th grade daughter Lily and 2nd grade son Trevor during the week. They miss their classmates, but are enjoying the more “relaxed” curriculum that I am administering! My wife Shannon works from home, so I get my office back in the late afternoon hours. I practice daily; lots of scales, etudes, and things of a more technical nature. Gotta keep the cobwebs off! And a full hour of every day is devoted to cardio; this is vital for maintaining a robust immune system. What are shows you’re watching, and other hobbies you’ve developed during this time?

Binging on shows like Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Stranger Things... As a lifelong Bulls fan, I have just gotten hooked on The Last Dance mini series on ESPN. – Derek Handley, Cello We share Fish Fry Fridays with our next door neighbors. Each household takes a turn finding a carryout fish fry to deliver to each other’s front porches. We’ve also discovered the NOM NOM NOM kits available through Liliana’s Restaurant. We take home a box of locally-sourced ingredients to prepare a meal conceived by a local chef. The proceeds benefit local farms, local restaurants, and local organizations including REAP and the Dane County Farmer’s Market. – Greg Smith, Bass Clarinet I’ve been spending as much time outside in the beautiful weather as possible! I’ve been cooking, gardening, and painting as well. My most recent project was a quilt I made with silk that I hand dyed with vegetable scraps!

What music inspires you and what do you listen to for personal enjoyment?

Musicians’ Relief Fund

You Can Help Support Our Madison Symphony Musicians!

The global pandemic has resulted in the cancellation of MSO concerts as we have known them. Madison Symphony Orchestra Inc. recognizes that the 91 members of the orchestra are a core cultural asset of the greater Madison community. We are committed to supporting our artists through these challenging times and have made voluntary contributions to cover their lost compensation for all of the canceled rehearsals and performances since April 2020. Our musicians have been forthcoming with individual messages of appreciation.

In late September, our Board of Directors launched the Musicians’ Relief Fund by contributing $184,000 to cover the musicians’ losses for the canceled September and October subscription concerts, and we set an initial goal to raise an additional $171,000 from the public to cover the musicians’ losses for the canceled November and December subscription concerts. As this newsletter goes to print, we have already surpassed this initial goal. Thank you to all who contributed!

Decisions about our spring concert schedule will be made as public health guidelines for that timeframe become clearer.

The MSO remains committed to supporting our artists and we are extending the Musicians’ Relief Fund appeal through December 31, 2020.

A Symphony of Gratitude Dear Madison Symphony Orchestra Patrons, This pandemic has indeed affected all of our lives in some way or another and has had a profound effect on the performing arts. To say we were disappointed in not being able to finish our 2019–2020 Season or to convene as an orchestra to prepare live concerts for your enjoyment is an understatement, and the only consolation is that we have not been alone in adjusting to this strange new world!

For us as artists, music is a constant source of comfort and nourishment, as we continue to study and practice every day preparing for a triumphant return to the concert hall for live performances. Along with practicing the piano, I am having fun listening to symphonic works that we have never performed, in the hopes of making some wonderful new discoveries to share with you in future seasons.

My work includes a renewed and deeper commitment to broaden the artistic scope of the MSO in the area of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. I personally add my own commitment to stand with people of color and support the changes that must occur to make things better. During this past year, our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee has been exploring ways we can create a modern-day symphony orchestra that reflects the society in which we live. And while this includes all facets of the Symphony’s operations, my job is to explore ways to expand the repertoire to include a stronger presence of composers of color.

I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on some of the highlights of this past season that you helped make possible with your donations and ticket purchases. In September 2019, we welcomed our incredibly talented curator of the Overture Concert Organ, Greg Zelek, in his concerto debut with the orchestra, brilliantly playing Barber’s Toccata Festiva. We are so proud of the growth of our string section over the years, which was brilliantly illustrated by the way they executed the difficult Venusberg Music of Wagner. Our woodwinds gave a sublimely sensual performance in Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun.

The fall also brought us two auspicious debuts from violinist Rachel Barton Pine and pianist Joyce Yang. In addition to Rachel’s splendid performance of the Khachaturian Concerto, anyone who was in the audience on that Saturday night was treated to an awesome display of Scottish fiddling. The orchestra played the delightful 9th Symphony of Shostakovich with virtuosic charm. Along with Joyce Yang’s flawless performance of the 3rd Piano Concerto of Prokofiev, the orchestra mastered the very challenging Newly Drawn Sky by Aaron Jay Kernis, and delivered a beautiful Schumann 2nd Symphony.

Christmas brought us for the 15th year in a row the Mount Zion Gospel Choir, which always manages to raise the roof, as well as beautifully sung performances by the Madison Symphony Chorus and Madison Youth Choirs. And who can forget the show stopping performance of O Holy Night as performed by soprano Michelle Johnson?

January again brought us together with several American Players Theatre actors for yet another exciting Beyond the Score®, this time Prokofiev’s masterpiece from World War II, his Symphony No. 5. In February, we welcomed back violinist Pinchas Zukerman and cellist Amanda Forsyth for a beautifully realized Brahms Double Concerto. The orchestra followed with a wonderful rendition of Copland’s 3rd Symphony. March, our last concert of the season, was distinguished by the very successful debut of conductor Kenneth Woods and a thrilling Mendelssohn Violin Concerto from violinist Blake Pouliot in his MSO debut. The orchestra’s stunning performances of Haydn and Strauss concluded our abbreviated season.

I want to thank all those involved for making these performances possible. The synergy that has developed over the years between the musicians, staff, board, donors, subscribers, and you, the audience, is simply without comparison. We look forward to continuing this remarkable relationship in the months and years to come. I wish you all a safe and healthy autumn and I look forward to reuniting with you in Overture Hall in 2021.

From the Executive Director and Board President Dear Friends and Stakeholders, Last season was one none of us will ever forget. In early spring, the shock of the coronavirus pandemic was an unforeseen blow not just to Madison’s cultural arts, but to performing arts world-wide. The subsequent cancellation of the rest of our season was an unprecedented interruption of 90+ years of continuous concert production. The challenges of COVID-19 notwithstanding, its onset capped an otherwise excellent year with gathering momentum toward the close. Here are some highlights: • Record-breaking, sold-out Madison Symphony Christmas concerts reversed a trend of declining attendance in the fall. Through our continuing partnership with the Madison Chapter of The Links, Inc. and the support of generous donors we distributed 110 complimentary tickets to youth and families of diverse backgrounds through our “All Ears at the Symphony” community ticketing program.

• We introduced the Symphony Ambassador program, which invites people of color and their families to greet concertgoers as they enter the Overture Hall lobby, enjoy the concerts and join us for post-concert receptions. The goal is to create a more welcoming environment for audience members of color.

• “Out at the Symphony”, which includes members and friends of the LGBTQ community and “Club 201”, our young professionals group, participated in hospitality events at our Christmas and Valentine’s Day concerts.

• “Beyond the Score”, the multi-media concert that explores the history and meaning of select masterpieces, again exceeded box office expectations.

• In their MSO debuts, Kenneth Woods, native Madisonian and now international conductor, and violinist Rachel Barton Pine participated in events with the young musicians of the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras.

• The Overture Concert Organ series soared to new heights, led by curator Greg Zelek, who continues to build our organ program.

• The Education and Community Engagement Programs continue to innovate and excel. Kathryn Schwarzmann and Lisa Kjentvet presented the HeartStrings® program with the Rhapsodie Quartet at the Music Therapy Association National Conference in Minneapolis. Kathryn was appointed chair of the Education and Community Development Leadership Committee of the League of American Orchestras.

• Generous contributions from individuals, corporations, foundations and government entities exceeded the Annual Campaign goal by 5.5%, with individuals accounting for 70% of the total. We welcomed five new households into our Stradivarius Society, bringing the total to sixty households representing over $8 million in anticipated planned gifts to our endowment.

• The Board of Directors authorized payment to the orchestra of $373,000 of wages for COVID-19 cancelled concerts. A Small Business Administration Paycheck Protection Loan covered this relief to our artists, as well as staff salaries.

BOLZ YOUNG ARTIST COMPETITION Preliminary Round: Early January Semi-Final Round: Late January (not open to the public) Final Round (The Final Forte): Wednesday, March 3, 2021, on Overture Hall stage The Bolz Young Artist Competition is a highlyregarded statewide competition in which Wisconsin’s young musicians compete for scholarships and the

opportunity to perform as soloists with the MSO. The competition is open to Wisconsin residents in grades 9–12. The four semi-finalists compete in The Final Forte on Wednesday, March 3, 2021 in Overture Hall.

We are accepting applications for this year’s competition through Monday, January 11, 2021, with a few changes to the rules and procedures.

First, we regret that we are not able to accept any wind or brass applications this year, as all instrumentalists will need to wear a mask during the entire audition/performance process.

Additionally, all applicants must make sure their preferred audition piece is approved by the MSO. More information on changes to this years’ procedures, as well as the competition application,

MUSICIANS CORNER Monthly Bach Concert Series Resumes - Online Now in its 3rd season of monthly Bach concerts, Just Bach presents instrumental solos, chamber music, and concertos this year, ending each program with the popular Chorale sing-along.

The dates fall on the 3rd Wednesday of each month: Nov 18, Dec 16, Jan 20, Feb 17, Mar 17, Apr 21, May 19., all at 12:00 Noon. MUSICIANS HONORED AT VIRTUAL MSO BOARD MEETING At the 2019–2020 Board of Directors Meeting held virtually in June, two musicians and one Madison Symphony Chorus member received awards given out each year for their outstanding dedication to their respective organizations.

The Margaret Rupp Cooper Award, named for Ms. Cooper who was a harpist with the Symphony for 50 years, was presented to two orchestra members based upon years of service, commitment to orchestra, and musicianship. This year’s recipients were Dave Cooper (trumpet) and Jon Vriesacker (violin).

The Ann Stanke Award was also presented to Madison Symphony Chorus member Joanne Berg. The award is given in honor of the former accompanist and manager of the Chorus.

LEADERSHIP DONOR EVENT WARMLY RECEIVED In early September, MSO arranged an exclusive opportunity for our Leadership Donors to watch a live, online piano recital performed by the great French pianist, Philippe Bianconi, from his Paris living room.

Music Director John DeMain joined Mr. Bianconi on screen for lively conversation between pieces. The program, entitled “Live From Paris,” included three gorgeous works for solo piano which Mr. Bianconi performed on his beautiful Steinway Model B: Beethoven’s Sonata No. 31 in A flat Major, Op. 110; Etude No. 11 “Pour les arpèges composes” by Debussy, and Chopin’s Ballade No. 3 in A flat Major, Op. 47.

PIPE ADOPTION HONORS ELLSWORTH BROWN Friends of the Overture Concert Organ’s (FOCO) 2019–2020 Board of Directors recently honored their Immediate Past President, Ellsworth Brown, by adopting a pipe in his honor through the Symphony’s Adopt-a-Stop program. The group effort, led by current president James Baxter, resulted in over $1,000 in tribute contributions from individual board members. Principal Organist and Curator, Greg Zelek, visited Brown’s home this summer to surprise him with the tribute and deliver an adoption certificate showing that the Overture Concert Organ’s Solo Harmonic Flute 8’ - E3 pipe was adopted in his honor.

A flute pipe was selected because Brown played the flute as a teenager. He served as FOCO President from 2018-2020 and was recently elected President of the Madison Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors. “I’m deeply appreciative of this recognition by the FOCO Board of Directors and look forward to my continued

Judy’s love of music began at home in Marinette, band and orchestra. She has memories as a child of listening to Wisconsin Public Radio classic music broadcasts at breakfast. “I begged my father to give me piano lessons when I was four and began lessons with other teachers at six, “says Judy, who explains “I took violin lessons and played in school orchestra through high school. Our family attended local subscription concerts, and I performed in the community Handel’s Messiah performances both in choirs and orchestras.” She sang in her father’s church choir and in the summer, the music didn’t stop; Judy, her parents, and sibling sang duets during summer services when the choir was on vacation!

Her commitment to music as a young person brought her to Madison for state school music competitions and to attend the UW Summer Music Clinic. As a University of Wisconsin student, she sang in a campus church choir and was a member of the Wisconsin Union Music Committee. She remembers chairing publicity for the Isaac Stern concert in the Union Theater. “My reward was to sit next to Mr. Stern at a post-concert dinner!”

Her active support of music as in our community continued through her volunteer involvement with the Madison Symphony Orchestra League, the Madison Symphony Orchestra, the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras, and more. She joined the MSOL in 2001 and chaired numerous committees and fundraising events during that time and was President of the League from 2005–2007. She has served on the Madison Symphony Orchestra’s Board as a Director or Advisor since 2005. She was a member of the Madison Symphony Chorus and sang with the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church Choir for almost 25 years.

In her professional career, she was a social worker with the Madison Metropolitan School District. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Masters of

PARTIES OF NOTE Madison Symphony Orchestra League’s Parties of Note reluctantly postponed 13 of its 2020 events because of the pandemic. Guests who were to have attended were most generous; many either made donations or designated “wait and see.” Guests were also offered the choice of a refund.

The pandemic has not curbed the Parties of Note Committee’s enthusiasm in planning for 2021. They are planning many exciting events and hope that the MSO community, especially those on waiting lists, will have options for a new event. In 2021, online registration will be even more important.

Announcements will be made regarding the new season when the safety of having social events can be predicted.

After an awe-inspiring appearance in 2018 with his all-Bach program, GRAMMY Award-winning organist (and my Juilliard professor) Paul Jacobs returns to Overture Hall to share the beauty of his musical insights into Handel’s Organ Concerti.

Bookended by Mr. Jacobs’ arrangements of two of Handel’s Op. 4 Concerti for solo organ, the versatility of our Mighty Klais will be on full display with a program that will amaze all!
