Noteworthy news from the Madison Symphony Orchestra

It gives me great pleasure, as always, to welcome you to the opening concerts of our 2017–2018 Symphony season. I’ve put together an opening program that focuses on our great musicians that make up the MSO, and commemorates the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Both Bach and Mendelssohn were devout Lutherans, Mendelssohn having converted from Judaism when he was 12 years old. So, I decided to open with Leopold Stokowski’s great transcription of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, and then give the first performance by the MSO of Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5, subtitled the Reformation. Indeed, this symphony quotes extensively from one of the greatest Christian hymns of all time – A Mighty Fortress is our God. Continuing after intermission with the tradition of featuring one of our own players as guest soloist, this year we throw the spotlight on our wonderful Principal Violist, Chris Dozoryst, who will perform Berlioz’s 2nd symphony: Harold in Italy. This rumination of Berlioz traveling through Abruzzi has special meaning for me, as my entire family on both sides come from Abruzzi. The work is in four movements and calls for a fairly large orchestra, and should provide us with a rousing send-off for our season.

Our second subscription concert brings the return of the dazzling pianist Olga Kern, who has thrilled us with her past performances here. The last time we did Samuel Barber’s great Piano Concerto was with John Browning in 1999. Browning had also premiered the work. This technically challenging work should play to Olga’s great strength and dynamic pianism.

Ravel’s Mother Goose suite from his ballet of the same name should provide a gentle and beautiful contrast to the dramatic Barber concerto.

After intermission, we will play Dvořák’s New World Symphony, which was our first Beyond the Score® offering several years ago. Dvořák had one foot in America and another in his European homeland when he wrote this great symphony. Of course, the presence of melodies derived from Negro spirituals greatly contributes to the unique American aspect of this work.

This symphony is a personal favorite of mine, and I think it is one of the greatest symphonies ever written.

November developed into quite a unique and interesting program for me.

One never wants to miss Sharon Isbin performing Rodrigo’s beloved guitar Concierto de Aranjuez, but I was thrilled to learn that Dave Brubeck’s son, Chris Brubeck, a successful composer in his own right, had written a new guitar concerto for Ms. Isbin. This eclectic Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra will include not only strong jazz influences, but other world music references as well. This led to the idea to create an American first half and Spanish second half.

I thought Copland would make a perfect companion to Brubeck. His exciting Billy the Kid Suite from the ballet of the same name has never had a professional performance by the MSO until now.

And, to add to that, we will give the first performance of de Falla’s great and popular ballet El Sombrero Tres Picos in the second half of the program.

Guests enjoyed a lovely buffet and were treated to a piano performance by 2017 Final Forte finalist Michael Wu (age 15, Sun Prairie). 2017 FALL YOUTH CONCERTO COMPETITION Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017 The 2017 Fall Youth Concerto Competition is open to Wisconsin musicians in grades 3–8 who play piano, string, wind, brass or percussion instruments. Winners will be featured during the annual Fall Youth Concerts on November 7, playing with the MSO for an audience of their peers. Winners will also receive a scholarship to attend the UW-Madison Summer Music Clinic in June of 2018. Applications are due Friday, September 1st and can be downloaded at madisonsymphony.org/fycc.

Annually, the MSO offers a Docent Program to schools who are registered to attend the Fall Youth Concerts.

During these docent visits, an MSOL member teams up with a musician from the orchestra to provide students with information about musical selections, composers and concert etiquette.

Despite intermittent storms throughout the day, more than 410 guests enjoyed the Madison Symphony Orchestra League’s 23rd annual Concert on the Green on Monday, June 19 at Bishops Bay Country Club.

The golf tournament was stopped twice due to the weather, but most of the golfers — more than 80 in attendance — were able to finish.

One guest arrived by boat during the hail storm as Silent Auction Conductor Scott Cabot was rehearsing Ride of the Valkyries with the Orchestra. Blown over tables were reset, the tent was re-staked, the sun came out and the beautiful party continued.

BACKSTAGE WELCOME GREG ZELEK AS NEW PRINCIPAL ORGANIST AND CURATOR OF THE OVERTURE CONCERT ORGAN Greg Zelek becomes the Principal Organist and Curator of the Overture Concert Organ in September, following Samuel Hutchison’s retirement announcement in May. Greg, who is 26 and holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Juilliard School of Music, said in a previous interview with the MSO that he sees new opportunities for the organ through chamber collaboration, and desires to keep composers interested in the organ and curious about its capabilities.

Greg is recognized as one of the most exciting young organists in the American organ scene, and has appeared in multiple venues throughout the US. Greg’s engagements have included serving as the Music Director and Organist at the Episcopal Church of St. Matthew and St. Timothy in New York City, Organ Scholar at Hitchcock Presbyterian Church in Scarsdale, New York, Music Director of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Miami, and summer organist for San Pedro Apostol Church in Ramales de la Victoria, Spain.

Notes from MSO Board President Elaine Mischler At the Annual Meeting on June 13, 2017, President Elaine Mischler reflected on the wonderful season just completed.

She pointed out that the orchestra presented truly great music, that ticket sales with overall revenue from subscriptions and single tickets sales was 5% over goal, the 2016–2017 Annual Campaign achieved greater than 107% of goal, and the Education and Community Engagement Programs served 25,000 people of all ages.

She emphasized that all of the great success of the season would not happen without the work of so many people. She gave a big thank you to Music Director John DeMain, Assistant Conductor/ Chorus Director Beverly Taylor, all the MSO donors, sponsors, concertgoers, Board members, administrative staff, musicians and chorus members who make the musical magic happen.

The Ancora String Quartet’s 17th season will include collaborations with high school musicians in Beloit and Watertown. The concert programs will feature the haunting Fantasia on a Theme

by Thomas Tallis by Ralph Vaughan Williams, for orchestra and string quartet, as well as selections performed separately by the students and the quartet.
