h November brings three stunning works by three giant French composers, as well as Sara Sant'Ambrogio's solo debut with the MSO. Sara appeared with the Symphony in 2001 as the Eroica Trio's brilliant cellist. I'm particularly excited that she has agreed to perform Camille Saint-Saëns' Cello Concerto No. 1, as it is a repertoire favorite and one we haven't performed in some thirty-four years. Adding to my excitement is a chance to introduce our audience to a live performance of Maurice Ravel's charming Valses Nobles et Sentimentales, a personal favorite of mine. A composition performed much more often, and for good reason, is Hector Berlioz's great Symphonie Fantastique, which is based on Berlioz's obsession with an actress who pays him no mind, until much later in life after this piece is written. The music is wonderful and dramatic throughout, as Berlioz's journey takes him to the depths of hell and our brass section, including the first use of the tuba in a symphony orchestra, has a field day. I urge all of you to visit madisonsymphony.org to read Michael Allsen's program notes and to listen to works on the program you are unfamiliar with. This will enormously increase your listening pleasure as it is difficult for all of us to absorb every detail of a composition on first hearing.

We usher in the month of December with our spectacular Christmas concert that launches the holiday season for so many of us. This concert features the entire family: the Madison Youth Choirs, the Mount Zion Gospel Choir, and our own Madison Symphony Chorus. The MSO Chorus is under the direction of Beverly Taylor, who is celebrating her 20th season as the director of our chorus and assistant conductor of the orchestra. Congratulations, Beverly, and thank you for all the help and fine work you have done these past twenty years.
This concert's repertoire will represent a wide and varied spectrum of both religious and secular seasonal music. One highlight is the return of the opening processional carol, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, which many of you have requested. There are wonderful traditions established now with this concert including some 220 singers joining the Mount Zion Gospel Choir for a rousing finale before our final favorite tradition happens: our audience sing-along. I never cease to be amazed at how all of you in the audience, combined with the enormous forces on stage, raise the roof of Overture Hall. In this instance, all of you transport me. If you haven't experienced this concert, I urge you to buy a ticket and join in the spirit of the season.

A: As a youngster I took the usual piano lessons. My older brother took violin lessons and we played together for fun. Q: How did you first become involved with the Madison Symphony Orchestra?

A: When we moved to Madison in 1954, my husband and I decided to take time from his busy schedule as a physician to seek out the type of music we both enjoyed. So early on we purchased season tickets to the Madison Symphony. Q: Why do you make an annual donation to the Madison Symphony Orchestra? A: I believe it is important to support John DeMain and the Madison Symphony, so that we continue to have first-rate artists for all of the concerts.

Lovey studied culinary arts at the Cordon Bleu in Paris and was recruited by Pillsbury, where she helped create the Pillsbury Doughboy. She was lured by Borden, and retired as Borden's first corporate vice president. She received several honors including National Home Economist. After her retirement, Lovey moved to New York City and worked at Christie's Auction House as an exhibit specialist. Lovey left New York and moved to Evansville, WI to assist DeEtte and Prent with continuing the home, travel, and social life they loved. She insisted on arranging the best in catering, 3

transportation, trips, hotels and amenities. She and DeEtte visited Paris 26 times! Lovey wrote in her memoirs: “Don't forget to live, love and laugh. Symphony Safari What Nature Tells Us About the Orchestra Randal Swiggum, Conductor
The Madison Symphony Orchestra welcomes students in grades 4-8 to attend this year's Fall Youth Concerts, in which students go on an engaging and educational “Symphony Safari,” learning what nature teaches them about music. Created by Maestro Randal Swiggum, the program encourages students to become “expert noticers,” teaching skills of listening for detail and using information to construct a meaningful whole. Selections, including Mahler's Symphony No. 3, Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals, and Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, are presented to students as opportunities to practice “expert noticing” through the guiding analogies of nature. To aide teachers in preparing students for the concert experience, the MSO provides a Curriculum Guide that gives insight into the concepts behind the program and ideas for supplemental student activities. The Fall Youth Concerts also feature the winner(s) of the annual Fall Youth Concerto Competition. These talented young musicians from throughout south-central Wisconsin have earned the opportunity to perform with the MSO and a full-tuition scholarship to attend the UW-Madison Summer Music Clinic. This is a year of celebration for the MSO's HeartStrings program! In honor of this 10-year milestone, the Rhapsodie Quartet (the program's resident quartet) collaborated with the Ancora String Quartet and performed for a SoundWaves presentation at the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery in October 2015. NEW DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: KATHRYN SCHWARZMANN
Kathryn Schwarzmann holds a Bachelor of Music in Performance degree from Northwestern University and played violin with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and National Repertory Orchestra before earning her General and Instrumental Music Education Certification from the University of Wisconsin–Platteville. Prior to joining the Madison Symphony Orchestra staff, Kathryn taught music in the Milwaukee Public Schools and worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Additionally, Kathryn completed an Education and Community Engagement Internship with the MSO in 2013. A NOTE FROM KATHRYN I am thrilled to join the Madison Symphony Orchestra as Director of Education and Community Engagement. A LETTER FROM 2015-16 MSOL PRESIDENT CAROLE SCHAEFFER I am thrilled to serve as the MSOL president for the 2015-16 season! Even though I am excited to serve, it was not an easy choice due to my ever-busy schedule. However, I thought of my son who played cello in his school orchestra, and has continued to be involved in music to this day, and I decided it was well worth it to step into this position, because I believe in the importance of giving others that chance. The core of the MSOL's mission is to support the MSO and its nationally recognized Education and Community Engagement programs, helping ensure that each new generation has access to classical music. We provide this support primarily through our fundraising efforts. We started with the Symphony Gala on September 18, which honored Valerie Kazamias. Valerie will again demonstrate her commitment to music as she heads up another inspirational Arts Ball on November 14. We also have the Parties of Note series, offering a myriad of unique events, and once the weather warms up, the return of the everpopular 22nd annual Concert on the Green. I hope I have the opportunity to get to know more of you as I serve in this capacity and look forward to the exciting music and fellowship to come!

ASK A MSO MUSICIAN This month's featured musician is cellist Jordan Allen. Q: What initially drew you to the cello? A: I was initially drawn to the cello because of its sound. I absolutely loved its singing combination of low notes and high notes! How beautiful the cello is.... Q: It's a Saturday in Madison. How would you spend your day? A: Autumn has descended upon the area, and I begin my day by going for a run on one of the many amazing trails in the city. Afterwards, my husband and I head to Sardine for brunch, stop by the Farmer's Market on the Square, and visit with my sister, brother-in-law, and nephew. Q: Fill in the blank. I can't go anywhere without my A: Chapstick.

Q: What is your favorite part about performing with the MSO? A: My favorite part of performing with the MSO is obviously making music, but even more importantly, it's our audience. I love looking out into the hall and seeing familiar faces. We have tremendous support from the Madison community.

MSO Violinist Writes Technique Book MSO violinist Jon Vriesacker's book Violin Aerobics has just been published. Music publisher Hal Leonard approached Jon to write a violin technique book that would incorporate styles and techniques from pop music. The book contains an exercise a day for a year and draws from jazz, rock and roots music. STAFF NEWS New Manager of Individual Giving Jeff Breisach is the new Manager of Individual Giving for the Madison Symphony Orchestra. He recently completed his MBA in Arts Administration at UW-Madison. Jeff brings a diverse set of experiences with him to the Madison Symphony. During his MBA studies he had the opportunity to work with Madison Opera as a Development Associate, Green Lake Festival of Music as Interim Administrative Director, and the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters as the Fellows Program Coordinator. Prior to moving to Madison in 2011, he served as the Director of Bands and General Music for Covert Public Schools in Covert, MI for three years. Additionally, Jeff is a classically trained horn player who can be found playing with a variety of local groups. New UW-Marketing Assistant Katherine Doehring, the MSO's new Marketing Assistant, joins the Marketing Department as a first year MBA student at the Center for Brand and Product Management at UWMadison. Katherine grew up in Los Angeles, is an avid piano and flute player and studied Film Production at Northwestern University. Katherine will coordinate and promote Club 201 for young professionals (see back page).
