Welcome to the 2018 – 2019 Season!

Dear friends of the MSO, Welcome to our new season and my 25th anniversary with the Madison Symphony Orchestra. So much has happened to our wonderful organization over these many years, and I will certainly be reflecting on the many milestones we have attained together. One thing is for certain, my wife, daughter Jennifer, and I have been the lucky beneficiaries of one of the most extraordinary arts communities with which I have been connected.

The amazing team of the MSO led by my brilliant and dedicated colleague Rick Mackie make it possible for the musicians and myself to do our work in an incredibly supportive atmosphere. Our orchestra manager Ann Bowen, who I work closely with on a daily basis, is a crown jewel all to herself. But it is you, our loyal, enthusiastic, generous donors and patrons that bring constant joy into our lives. Your love for live symphonic music is so inspiring to me and the musicians of the orchestra, and what we together have accomplished over these 25 years is considerable and meaningful. And what virtuosic musicians we have in our orchestra. Our reputation has attracted musicians from all over the country to come and audition for a seat in the orchestra.

This year we will be hearing some of these special players in solo performances with the orchestra. We continue, thanks to your financial generosity, to bring you the top echelon international soloists, who never cease to be amazed by what they experience here with the orchestra and you the audience. It is a great honor for me to open my anniversary season with the great pianist Emanuel Ax, and to collaborate again with Christopher Taylor and James Ehnnes. I am also thrilled that we were able to engage the great Canadian pianist Marc AndrĂŠ Hamelin for the first time with the orchestra. And what joy it will be for me to share my personal affinity for Gustav Mahler with his colossal 8th symphony, and to honor the great Leonard Bernstein in his centennial year. These are only a few of the highlights to look forward to this season, as the season was assembled to reflect some of my very favorite orchestral works that made me fall in love with symphonic music and want to become a conductor.

It is important to me that our orchestra be firmly involved in the musical fabric of our city, impacting the lives of our citizens, and reaching out to every segment of our society. Our community outreach activities are ever growing and adapting to become even more relevant in our rapidly changing times. While I will take a few moments to reflect upon the past and feel proud of all that we have achieved over these years, I have always been the type of person who looks ahead, wanting to take the orchestra to still greater artistic heights, to further expand the repertoire both for the orchestra and for our audience, and develop new audiences and to reach deeper into the community spreading the joy of music.

I want to close by making a special thank you to the musicians of the MSO who have played their hearts out for me (and you). Their commitment and talent has time and again crossed the footlights and brought you to your feet cheering or moved you to tears from the overwhelming beauty of their playing. I look forward to continuing this extraordinary synergy into the foreseeable future and, once again, express my deep gratitude for the joy you have all brought to my life for nearly a quarter of a century.

A Symphony of Gratitude It is with great appreciation and thanks to you, our subscribers, donors, volunteers, and community partners, that I reflect on the Madison Symphony Orchestra’s 2017– 2018 Season. The season featured many memorable performances, most notably those of our fabulous guest artists: pianist Olga Kern, guitarist Sharon Isbin, cellist Alban Gerhardt and violinist Augustin Hadelich returned to our stage, while pianist Christopher O’Riley and the great and long-sought violinist Gil Shaham made their Madison Symphony debuts.

The Members of the Madison Symphony Orchestra displayed their virtuosity in selections from the orchestral repertoire, such as Elgar’s Enigma Variations, which we explored in depth through Beyond the Score®. Our guest singers and choirs and the members of the Madison Symphony Chorus shined beautifully in our Christmas concerts and in our season finale. Kudos to Beverly Taylor and the Chorus for their outstanding work to prepare Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass, a truly “massive” undertaking! On behalf of all the artists, thank you for attending and supporting these concerts. We love performing for you!

With generous donor support, the Symphony touched the lives of thousands of people through our year-long series of education and community engagement programs. From the Youth Concerts to the Up Close & Musical® school visits to the HeartStrings® music therapy-informed sessions, children and adults experienced live performances by members of the Madison Symphony Orchestra. Through the statewide broadcast of our Bolz Young Artist Competition Final Forte concert, four incredibly gifted young women from Wisconsin inspired people all over the state and beyond through their remarkable display of talent and hard work.

Each year, the orchestra experiences transitions. Among our new members this year were two outstanding principals: organist Greg Zelek and harpist Johanna Wienholts. At the close of the season, we bid farewell to Michael Allsen who retired from the orchestra after 35 years in the trombone section.

We could not share great music with our community without your support. From all of us at the MSO, thank you! I look forward to experiencing beautiful music with you during our exciting 2018–2019 Season.

This consistent stewardship over these impressive decades is the foundation of the success of the concerts we thrill to in Overture Hall season after season. It’s a strength to say we don’t have a financial “problem.” We hear that such a condition is endemic among professional orchestras in America. While that’s somewhat overstated, the Madison Symphony Orchestra is among one of the most successful of its type. The American model of arts support is based on the private sector, with public funding in most states a small portion of revenues. Wisconsin is one of the lowest for public funding, so we have developed our business model to be responsive to the private sector upon which we depend for existence and advancement.

It is notable that this orchestra continues the healthy balance of earned and contributed revenues we have been able to report to you over the years. Our aim is to balance our revenue streams among earned, contributed and investment sources, including a robust endowment. But we acknowledge that gifts are the lifeline of any orchestra, and our community has shown stalwart support through the best and worst of times. And it is to this point that the Gratitude Report is dedicated. There are not thanks enough to sufficiently express our appreciation of what you do for the Symphony, for the art of great music and for the community we serve.

Symphony Announces Permanent Name for Concertmaster Chair The Madison Symphony Orchestra has received a major bequest of $400,000 from the estate of William Wartmann, an Edgerton resident and philanthropist who passed away in June of this year. In appreciation of his bequest, and in fulfillment of his wish, the Symphony is pleased to announce the permanent naming of our Concertmaster chair: The William and Joyce Wartmann Chair.

An Evening of Gratitude The MSO takes every opportunity to show appreciation to our donors. The Evening of Gratitude is our annual appreciation event open to our Vivace, Maestro, Gold Baton and Standing Ovation donors. There is something about interacting with children that really points out your individual fears and shortcomings. If you doubt yourself for a moment, they can tell, and you’ve lost them. When teaching young kids, you have to be ready for anything: ready to answer any possible question, ready to redirect unhelpful behavior, ready to follow their lead. This, I feel, was my greatest gain from this program.

2018 FALL YOUTH CONCERTO COMPETITION Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018 The 2018 Fall Youth Concerto Competition is open to Wisconsin musicians in grades 3–8 who play piano, string, wind, brass or percussion instruments. Winners will be featured during the annual Fall Youth Concerts on November 13, playing with the MSO for an audience of their peers. Winners will also receive a scholarship to attend the UW-Madison Summer Music Clinic in June of 2019.
