EDUCATION HIGH NOTES Bolz Young Artist Competition The Bolz Young Artist Competition is a highly regarded statewide competition in which Wisconsin’s young musicians compete for scholarships and the opportunity to perform as soloists with the Madison Symphony Orchestra. SAVE THE DATE: The Final Forte: Wisconsin Young Artists Compete The third and final round of the Bolz Young Artist Competition will be broadcast to audiences statewide as part of The Final Forte collaboration with Wisconsin Public Television and Wisconsin Public Radio on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. This free event is open to the public and broadcast live from Overture Hall. MSO Education Director to Serve on Leadership Committee Kathryn Schwarzmann was invited to join the League of American Orchestras Education and Community Engagement Leadership Committee, starting October 1, 2018. The Leadership Committee includes 12 League member orchestra administrators who hold significant responsibility and experience within their field. The mission of the Education and Community Engagement Leadership Committee is to partner with the League of American Orchestras to provide leadership for the fields of education and community engagement within symphony orchestras. The committee and the League work together to identify and address issues of interest, concern, and exploration for education and community engagement professionals; serve as an advocate for education and community engagement in the industry; establish governing policies; support recruitment and cultivation of education and community engagement professionals from a wide variety of backgrounds; and support professional development opportunities.

Silver Anniversary Gala Celebrated John DeMain’s MSO Milestone Pianists Christina and Michelle Naughton set the tone for a magical and memorable celebration of John DeMain's 25th anniversary with their performance on September 21st at The Madison Concourse Hotel and Governor's Club. Glamorous table decor with elegant floral arrangements created a festive atmosphere for the 252 guests who attended the event co-chaired by Peggy Pyle and Janet Cabot. Marian Bolz, who led the search committee that found and selected John DeMain, served as Honorary Chair. NBC 15's John Stofflet, News Anchor/Reporter, and Amy Carlson, Weekend Weather Anchor, were Masters of Ceremonies.

Guests were treated to a look at the early years of John DeMain's career with the premiere of the first part of a two-part video produced by Anders Yocom and Wisconsin Public Television.

On behalf of the Madison Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors, Board President Elaine Mischler announced a $50,000 fund was established in John's name to support Education and Community Engagement programs. a July tour of a nationally-recognized garden in our region, a tour of a carefully-developed prairie, and several musical salons and performances. Parties of Note are meant to be friend-making as well as fundraising events.

The Passport to Parties of Note will be mailed in late January and MSOL members will be allowed to make reservations for 7 days before reservations are opened to nonmembers. When online registration opens, members are encouraged to immediately register at madisonsymphony.org/msol.

Those who are unable to register online can register by mail. Because of the popularity of these events, online registration has been used by over 75% of previous attendees and is strongly recommended. Waiting lists are carefully maintained and utilized if there are cancellations.
