Welcome to our Spring Score Newsletter As we head into spring and, hopefully, a robust vaccination schedule, our artistic life can gradually think about returning to normal. In the meantime, all of us here at the Symphony are excited about The (virtual) Final Forte. Again sadly, we can’t yet engage our beloved orchestra, but we wanted to have the competition, Photo: Peter Rodgers

nonetheless. I was one of the judges for the semi-finals, where we reduced the candidates from eight to the final four. I was simply blown away by the depth of talent and the extraordinary ability, once again, of these highschool age competitors. Since some of these contestants are seniors, if we didn’t have this competition at all, they would miss the opportunity for substantial cash prizes, opportunity, and recognition. So, I am thrilled to be able to share this event with all of you, and I urge you to read more about the competitors in this issue and stay tuned to our website for more information on when you can watch the final production. We are also deep into planning for a return to live performing next season. I’m hoping to reproduce much of this past season, as the opportunity to have an in-depth look at Beethoven, the revolutionary composer, and to celebrate his birthday albeit a year later is too good to pass up. Also, the array of soloists associated with the programs is simply stunning. As we gain confidence as to the timing of our safe return to the stage, we will share more details with you. I’m so grateful to our public for their continued support of the orchestra through this long winter of silence. Rest assured, our musicians are practicing intensely, and we will be ready to come out of the gate in top form. I’m working out religiously 3 times a week, so my stamina on the podium will not have declined. I think you can tell that I’m chomping at the bit to be back with our orchestra, and on the Overture stage at full throttle. In the meantime, I hope all of you will remain safe and healthy and will get vaccinated as soon as the opportunity to do so presents itself. As of this writing, I’ve had my first shot and look forward to the second very soon. Here’s to a positive and imminent future.

EDUCATION HIGH NOTES

OUR ANNUAL BOLZ YOUNG ARTIST COMPETITION looked a little different this year, as the preliminary rounds were held virtually in January. Regardless, four incredible young musicians were selected as finalists to perform in Overture Hall as part of The Final Forte. On March 3, The Final Forte competition was captured by Audio for the Arts and Painted Post Multimedia in Overture Hall. That evening, the four finalists performed their concerto selections with piano accompaniment for a panel of three judges. Verbal introductions of the finalists and their musical selections were made from the stage by MSO’s Music Director, John DeMain, and MSO’s Director of Education and Community Engagement, Kathryn Schwarzmann. “The 2021 Bolz Young Artist Competition was unlike anything else I have ever produced. Video auditions and masks created a barrier that was necessary and yet still so unfamiliar,” Schwarzmann said. “But, despite this, our purpose was still the same — to celebrate the beauty of music and applaud the hard work, dedication and talent that is ever present among our young musicians. Indeed, the beauty of music has not gone anywhere — the same magnificent sounds of students who had perfected their art still rang through Overture Hall the night of the live final round. I hope students and audiences, alike, will be inspired by the competition this year, as I was.” As our first-place winner, Sophia Jiang was awarded the Marian Bolz Prize for Distinguished Musical Achievement and a $2,000 scholarship. Dexter Mott, our second-place winner, was awarded the Steenbock Youth Music Award and a $2,000 scholarship. Carrie Wang and Qing Ng also gave outstanding performances, and each received honorable mentions and $1,000 scholarships. Wisconsin Young Artists Compete: The Final Forte postproduction will be done by PBS Wisconsin. The final production will be presented online in the spring, and may also be broadcast. Stay tuned to madisonsymphony.org/finalforte for the latest information on the premiere date and to register to view the concert. SPONSORS: Wisconsin Young Artists Compete: The Final Forte is funded by major support from Diane Ballweg, W. Jerome Frautschi and Fred & Mary Mohs, with additional support from Dr. A. Beyer-Mears, James Dahlberg & Elsebet Lund, Darcy Kind & Marc Vitale, Julie & Larry Midtbo, Stephen Morton, Kato Perlman, Cyrena & Lee Pondrom, Sentry Insurance Foundation, Nick and Judith Topitzes, Anders Yocom & Ann Yocom Engelman, the Focus Fund for the Arts and Friends of PBS Wisconsin.

“Throughout almost a year of the pandemic, music has been one of the biggest things that has given people faith and connected people around the globe,” Jiang said. “Whether it be singing on balconies, virtual orchestral performances, or concerts through screens, we have been able to share our appreciation for music. I hope that my performance of Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major is able to touch and inspire people as much as I have been inspired through this special time. I am very excited to play in the Overture Center for the second time. It is an honor to perform with my sister, Jessica, in such a beautiful hall, along with playing a wonderful concerto! The Ravel piano concerto is a 20th century work that displays many genres of music, including blues and Neoclassicism, demonstrating how multiple types of music can be intertwined.”

“ Sometimes, giving up so much of what we considered normal is a gift. We are able to see the value of the work we do and the real reasons we do it. Those real reasons are still with us — nothing can take that away. When we are all able to be together for an event in the future that looks like what we have remembered, something will be different: We will be able to cherish those things that are lasting and valuable that much more.”

EDUCATION HIGH NOTES

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Ben Seeger, 2009 Finalist, The Final Forte Ben Seeger is a Madison Metropolitan School District graduate, and was a finalist in The Final Forte competition in 2009 while a senior at Madison Memorial High School. His parents arrived in America well-educated, immigrating here from Germany with mathematics and medical degrees and a huge appreciation of music; all three children in the family studied privately — both piano and a string instrument. Ben was a shy child but very bright and always attentive; he was the youngest of three in his family. At seven years of age and in his second grade music class, his music teacher discovered, quite by accident, that he had perfect pitch. She was teaching a lesson comparing major and minor music and how it makes the listener feel — through sounds, moods, feelings, movies. During the lesson Ben raised his hand, very much out of his characteristic quietness, and asked why she was demonstrating everything in the key of A, be it major or minor. When his teacher asked how he knew it was in the key of A, he carefully and quietly said “I don’t know.” What a classic opportunity for the teacher! She turned the piano around so the keyboard wasn’t facing Ben and told the class they were going to play a game, and Ben was going to be the contestant! Ben, a tad embarrassed but intrigued, listened to what was going to happen next. The teacher played a key just above middle C and asked him if he could tell her the name of the pitch; he named it. She

proceeded to play seven more pitches and he named six of the seven. The kids in the class were clapping along with the enthusiasm of his teacher! When finished she told him she thought he had a very special gift called “perfect pitch.” He was proud. The teacher was thrilled to have made the discovery! MSO ANNOUNCES

Musician Relief Payments For the Entire 2020–2021 Season

MUSICIAN RELIEF UPDATE

IN A YEAR THAT HAS BEEN FRAUGHT WITH UNCERTAINTY AND FINANCIAL HARDSHIP FOR SO many performing artists, the Madison Symphony Orchestra is extremely happy to announce that all contracted members of the Madison Symphony Orchestra will receive continued relief payments for all canceled concerts through the end of our 2020–2021 Season. “The musicians of the Madison Symphony Orchestra are at the heart of our organization. As an ensemble and as individuals, they bring great joy to our community through their magnificent performances,” says Executive Director Richard Mackie. “I’m very grateful to our community and quite proud of our Board for demonstrating their heartfelt support of our artists during this difficult year.” The community’s generous response to our Musicians’ Relief Fund Campaign, a Cultural Organization Grant from the State of Wisconsin, previous funds approved by our Board, and a second PPP loan have placed the Madison Symphony Orchestra on solid financial footing, sufficient to allow voluntary relief payments equal to what our musicians would have earned performing the 2021 February through May subscription concerts, the Final Forte & Spring Young People’s Concert, the Symphony Soup and Link Up education concerts, and Concert on the Green, all of which have been canceled. The MSO has also made a retroactive relief payment to the orchestra for the canceled 2020 Fall Youth Concerts.

“ I just want to say thank you for everything you do to keep us going. It is tough times, but I am relieved to the point of tears to know that we will be paid this spring…to know that we will be paid for the immediate future is an incredible relief, and truly demonstrates the generosity and integrity of the MSO organization,” wrote one musician upon receiving an email sent to the orchestra announcing the continued relief payments. IN JUNE 2020, we announced the cancellation of our September through January concerts due to ongoing public health concerns and Overture Center’s closure through November. Subsequently, we launched a Musicians’ Relief Fund Campaign with a goal to replace the Fall 2020 orchestra payrolls with voluntary relief payments. An initial commitment of $184,000 from the Board of Directors seeded the Relief Fund. Private contributions quickly exceeded the initial fundraising goal of $171,000, prompting an announcement to the orchestra that they would receive payment for all of the canceled Fall 2020 subscription concerts plus the January 2021 Beyond the Score® concert. At that time, the Spring 2021 concerts were still “on.” THEN, IN LATE NOVEMBER 2020, we regrettably announced the cancellation of the second half of our 2020–2021 Season and the extension of the Musicians’ Relief Fund Campaign through the end of December. Although we had issued subscriber refunds for the Fall 2020 concerts, we asked all subscribers to consider converting the value of their Spring concert tickets into a donation to the Musicians’ Relief Fund. In total, outright contributions from over 700 individual donors, ticket donations from 54% of our subscribers, a State of Wisconsin Cultural Organization Grant, previous board-approved funds, and a second PPP loan have allowed the Madison Symphony Orchestra to commit $1,023,474 in total relief payments to the Orchestra for the 2020–2021 Season. Including payments that were made at the end of the 2019–2020 season, the MSO has committed $1.4M in relief payments to our musicians during the pandemic. SINCE LAST MARCH, the Symphony has remained engaged with our community through free online programs, regular electronic and print communications, and a robust News and Stories website featuring interviews with our musicians and performances by past winners of our Bolz Young Artist Competition. We presented “A Virtual Madison Symphony Christmas” in December and two highly successful virtual Overture Concert Organ recitals in October and November. One additional virtual organ concert will premiere on April 27. The final round of the 2021 Bolz Young Artist Competition was held and recorded in early March and will be shared virtually in the spring. The Symphony’s overall financial position remains strong and we are well-positioned for a successful return to regular concerts in the 2021–2022 Season. We would like to thank all of you for your ongoing support, and we look forward to reuniting with you for live concerts next fall! 10

ESTATE PLANNING 101: WHAT DO I NEED AND HOW DO I GET STARTED? On March 10, MSO’s legacy giving group, The Stradivarius Society, hosted a free estate planning webinar titled Estate Planning 101: What Do I Need and How Do I Get Started? Following welcome remarks and introductions by Director of Development Casey Oelkers, Boardman & Clark attorneys Liz Heiner and Julia Jagow provided a comprehensive overview of the important steps we ALL need to be aware of when creating or updating an estate plan. Highlights included identifying essential estate planning documents such as wills, living trusts, beneficiary designations, powers of attorney and health care directives. They stressed why it is important to have a plan, and what happens if you do not have a plan or if your plan is incomplete. They also touched on how estate planning can include charitable giving to

MUSIC BEYOND YOUR LIFETIME: THE STRADIVARIUS SOCIETY Under the 27-year direction of John DeMain, and with our move into Overture Hall in 2004,

“ We both love classical music

the Madison Symphony Orchestra has grown from a small community ensemble to one

of the most highly-regarded regional orchestras in the nation. MSO’s artistic growth and community reach have been bolstered and sustained by you — our strong base of annual patrons and donors — and by our ever-growing endowment, approximately three-quarters of which is held by the Madison Symphony Orchestra Foundation and one-quarter by the Madison Community Foundation. When compared with other orchestras in our industry peer group, the MSO is the most well-endowed orchestra in relation to our operating budget. As of December 31, 2020, MSO’s combined endowment was $26,280,440.47, approximately five times our annual operating budget. The endowment provides a steady, reliable source of income for the Symphony and helps us plan for the future. In the past 10 years, over $3.4 million in bequests has been added to our endowment from members of the Symphony family who chose to include the Symphony as a beneficiary of their estate plans. Currently, the Symphony anticipates at least $7 million in legacy gifts from 61 households who have informed us of their planned giving intent. Most of these individuals have given the Symphony permission to name them in our Stradivarius Society legacy giving group. The MSO recognizes and celebrates Stradivarius Society members’ generous planned giving intent with an annual lunch and program, a unique lapel pin, an open invitation to our donor lounge at concerts, and recognition in concert program books.

Does the Symphony play a special role in your life? Do you share the Symphony’s commitment to ensuring the future of live classical music in our community? As you make plans to pass your assets down to your family members and causes you care about the most, the Madison Symphony Orchestra would be honored and humbled to be considered among the possible beneficiaries of your estate. Directing a portion of your estate to non-profit organizations can be a smart move tax-wise, and it can put aspirational giving within reach that may not be possible during your lifetime.

You can help preserve the MSO’s legacy of great music for future generations by including the Symphony in your estate plans. Call (608) 257-3734 to learn more.

Unless otherwise specified, all bequests and other estate gifts to the Symphony become part of the Madison Symphony Orchestra Foundation’s permanent endowment and will support the Symphony in perpetuity. Contact Casey Oelkers, Director of Development, 608-260-8680 x228, to begin a confidential conversation about how your legacy gift to the Symphony could provide general support, or support for a specific purpose, for generations to come. To close out this unconventional and exciting virtual season, it gives me great joy to bring back Madison native and 2009 Bolz Young Artist Competition finalist Ansel Norris for a concert with me of trumpet and organ. Concerti of Bach and Haydn will bookend this program filled with music that is both written and arranged for this electrifying pairing of instruments. Mr. Norris’ remarkable technique and singing lyricism will be on full display, while our Mighty Klais both supports and shimmers in this exhilarating performance you won’t want to miss! –Greg Zelek
