Dear friends of the Madison Symphony, It’s that time again to renew your subscription for our 22/23 season, which I hope will be a renewal in every way. With a stunning array of soloists, beloved staples from the symphonic repertoire, and our ever-expanding table of composers, this season will thrill you from start to finish.

The MSO debut of star British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor, playing the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3, is a real coup for us. Joining him on our star-studded roster will be the return of violinist James Ehnes (Barber), pianist Yefim Bronfman (Rachmaninoff), two piano team, the Naughton twins (Bruch), and violinist Blake Pouliot (Saint-Saëns) in simply a knock-out season of amazing artists.

We open our season with the thrilling conclusion of our belated Beethoven 2

birthday celebration as we perform his iconic ninth symphony, and honor Marc Fink for his extraordinary tenure as our Principal Oboist. The Madison Symphony Chorus joins us for Beethoven’s 9th, our spectacular Christmas concert, and then closes the season with the enormously popular and exciting Carmina Burana

by Carl Orff. Beyond the Score® focuses on the incredibly beautiful and lyrical fourth symphony by Gustav Mahler.

The season includes first-time MSO performances of works by Florence Price and Jessie Montgomery. Every concert will include at least one major work from our core symphonic repertoire, including great symphonies by Mendelssohn, Dvořák, Tchaikovsky, Schubert, and Brahms, plus other great symphonic works by Strauss, Bartók, and Britten.

Of course, our enormously popular Christmas concert will be back in all its

glory, and we have a bevy of great singers for our choral and Christmas programs. Just writing about next season is getting me excited. There is so much beauty and variety planned for all of you, many of whom have been incredibly loyal patrons over the years.

If you haven’t been back yet to a live performance, next season is the perfect way to take the plunge, and return to something that has been so central and nourishing to your lives, i.e. the LIVE performance of great music.

Mahler: Symphony No. 4 Heaven or Earth?

In 1892, Mahler completed a musical setting of a colorful folk poem, a child’s vision of heaven.

Eight years later, he constructed an entire symphony around this song, a work filled with childlike joy. The song appears as the final movement, sung by a soprano soloist. Come and explore Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, where music and song take us from the harmony of earth, to the harmony of heaven. In this Beyond the Score presentation, discover the background of this classical masterpiece. Through visual media, live actors and breathtaking music, we’ll explore the history of the work, telling the story of the life and times of Gustav Mahler and the events that inspired one of his greatest compositions.

SUBSCRIPTION DETAILS SEATING Subscription seating change requests are addressed after the renewal period has ended (mid-summer 2022). Changes depend upon non-renewed seats of other subscribers.

Please note that it is not always possible to accommodate your change requests. Changes are handled in order of your priority as determined by your past subscriptions and donations to the Madison Symphony Orchestra.

You must renew by Friday, May 27, 2022, to maintain this priority. Your payment will be processed upon receipt of your order. This does not guarantee your first choice of seating.

If you request seating that we are unable to accommodate due to lack of availability, we will call you to discuss alternatives or issue a refund upon request. Because availability is limited and subscribers have varying priority, we cannot guarantee your seats will be together if you have requested a change, or wish to be seated nearby or next to another subscriber.
