For our February concerts, we welcome back one of our favorite cellists, Alban Gerhardt. This charismatic cellist has a huge repertoire and impeccable technique, as well as consummate musicianship. In my search to program important works that have not been previously performed by the Madison Symphony Orchestra, I realized that we have never performed the Cello Concerto by William Walton. It is a very beautiful and lyrical work, and I look forward to collaborating again with Alban on this project.
Gioachino Rossini Overture to Semiramide William Walton Cello Concerto
Opening the concert is a favorite overture of mine by the prolific Gioacchino Rossini. It is from the opera entitled Semiramide, a favorite vehicle for the great soprano, Joan Sutherland. It is a serious-themed opera and the overture is quite a substantial and impressive introduction to this important opus.
Johannes Brahms Symphony No. 1 John DeMain, Conductor Alban Gerhardt, Cello
I never like to let too much time pass without programming the Brahms symphonies. Like their predecessor symphonies from Beethoven, they are part of our core repertory. Brahms’ First Symphony was a huge success at its premiere, and overtly pays tribute to the great master that gave us nine great symphonies. While the last movement in particular reminds one, intentionally, of the great Ninth Symphony of Beethoven, Brahms has, in the process, given us a vast, moving, quintessentially Brahmsian canvas as fresh and meaningful as when it was first heard in 1876. Hopefully the warmth and great beauty of the music on this program will help mitigate our winter doldrums.
