JOHN DEMAIN | MUSIC DIRECTOR In his 27th season as music director of the Madison Symphony Orchestra (MSO), Grammy and Tony Award-winning conductor John DeMain is noted for his dynamic performances on concert and opera stages throughout the world. American composer Jake Heggie assessed the conductor’s broad appeal, saying, “There’s no one like John DeMain. In my opinion, he’s one of the top conductors in the world.”

During his over two decades in Madison as the MSO music director, DeMain has consistently raised the quality of the orchestra by introducing blind auditions and continuously expanding the repertoire to encompass ever more challenging and virtuosic works, including the highly-acclaimed

performances of the complete symphonies of Gustav Mahler.

DeMain also oversaw the move into the world-class Overture Hall and expanded the subscription season to triple performances.

His active conducting schedule has taken him to the stages of the National Symphony, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the symphonies of Seattle, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Columbus, Houston, San Antonio, Long Beach, and Jacksonville, along with the Pacific Symphony, Boston Pops, Aspen Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, Orchestra of Seville, the Leipzig MDR Sinfonieorchester, and Mexico’s Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional.

Prior engagements include visiting San Francisco Opera as guest conductor for General Director David Gockley’s farewell gala, the Glimmerglass Festival in New York to conduct Sweeney Todd, Northwestern University to conduct Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah, and the Washington National Opera at the Kennedy Center in D.C. to conduct Kurt Weill’s Lost in the Stars. In 2019, he conducted the world premiere of Blue at the Glimmerglass Festival to critical acclaim, drawing "a vibrant performance from an orchestra of nearly 50 players" (The New York Times).

He conducted the Washington National Opera premiere of the opera in March 2020.

DeMain also serves as artistic director for Madison Opera and in their 2019–2020 season conducted La Traviata and Fellow Travelers. He has been a regular guest conductor with Washington National Opera at the Kennedy Center, New York City Opera, Michigan Opera Theatre, Los Angeles Opera, Seattle Opera, San Francisco Opera, Virginia Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Glimmerglass Festival in upstate New York, Aspen Music Festival, Portland Opera, and Mexico’s National Opera.

During his distinguished 17-year tenure with Houston Grand Opera, DeMain led a historymaking production of Porgy and Bess, winning a Grammy Award, Tony Award, and France’s Grand Prix du Disque for the RCA recording. In spring 2014, the San Francisco Opera released an HD DVD of their most recent production of Porgy and Bess, conducted by John DeMain.

DeMain began his career as a pianist and conductor in his native Youngstown, Ohio. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at The Juilliard School and made a highly acclaimed debut with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

DeMain was the second recipient of the Julius Rudel Award at New York City Opera and one of the first six conductors to receive the Exxon/National Endowment for the Arts Conductor Fellowship for his work with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.

DeMain holds honorary degrees from the University of Nebraska and Edgewood College and he is a Fellow of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters. He resides in Madison. His daughter, Jennifer, is a UW–Madison graduate.

GREG ZELEK | PRINCIPAL ORGANIST Greg Zelek is the Principal Organist of the Madison Symphony Orchestra and the Elaine and Nicholas Mischler Curator of the Overture Concert Organ, positions he has held since 2017.

Greg concertizes with the Madison Symphony Orchestra and throughout the United States. In addition, Greg regularly performs with orchestras as both a soloist and professional ensemble member. Highlights of the 2019–2020 season included three performances of Barber’s Toccata Festiva with the Madison Symphony Orchestra, recitals at the Oregon Bach Festival and the Kimmel Center in Verizon Hall, a return appearance with the Jacksonville Symphony as the featured guest soloist, as well as performances at venues in Virginia, Florida, Colorado, and Kentucky.

In 2016, Greg was chosen by The Diapason magazine as one of the top “20 Under 30” organists, a feature which selects the most successful young artists in the field. A recipient of the inaugural Kovner Fellowship, Greg received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, as well as an Artist Diploma, from the Juilliard School as a student of Paul Jacobs. Before moving to Madison, Greg was the Music Director and Organist at the Episcopal Church of St. Matthew and St. Timothy in New York City.

A Cuban-American and native Spanish speaker from Miami, FL, Greg became the Music Director and Organist of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Miami at age 15, and has served as the summer organist for San Pedro Apostol Church in Ramales de la Victoria, Spain.

EMILY SECOR | SOPRANO Praised for her “spicy and rich lyric soprano,” Emily Secor enjoys performing on and off the operatic stage.

As a Studio Artist with the Madison Opera in the 2019-2020 season, she performed the role of Annina and covering the role of Violetta in La Traviata, and performed the role of Miss Lightfoot in Fellow Travelers.

Emily’s recent performances with Madison Opera as a Studio Artist during the 2018–2019 season include covering the role of Nedda in I Pagliacci, performing the role of Mrs. Nordstrom and covering Anne Egerman in A Little Night Music, and performing the role of First Woodsprite and covering the title role in Rusalka.

Other recent operatic performances include covering the role of First Woodsprite in Rusalka as an Apprentice Artist with the Des Moines Metro Opera (2018), performing the role of Liz Taylor in scenes from Jackie O. by Michael Dougherty and Gretel in Hansel and Gretel at the University of Northern Iowa (2018).

As a soloist, she has performed with the Luther College Symphony and Combined Choirs for Handel’s Messiah.

BEVERLY TAYLOR | MSO CHORUS DIRECTOR Beverly Taylor has been the Director of the Madison Symphony Chorus since 1996 and Director of Choral Activities at UW–Madison since 1995.

Prior roles include Associate Conductor of the Madison Symphony Orchestra, Conductor of the Boston Bar Association Orchestra, Music Director of the Back Bay Chorale, and Associate Director of Choral Activities at Harvard University. Ms. Taylor has been a guest conductor at the Artur Rubenstein Philharmonic Orchestra in Poland, the St. Louis

Symphony Chorus, the Vermont Symphony, the Harvard Chamber Orchestra, the Madison Opera, the U.S. Air Force Band and Orchestra, the Harvard Radcliffe Collegium Musicum, and the Wellesley Chamber Singers.

Ms. Taylor graduated from the University of Delaware and Boston University School for the Arts and received a fellowship with Chorus America and an orchestral fellowship at Aspen.

She is the co-author of Wisdom, Wit and Will: Women Conductors on their Choral Art.

MADISON SYMPHONY CHORUS Beverly Taylor, Director

Formed in 1927, the Madison Symphony Chorus gave its first public performance on February 23, 1928, and has performed regularly with the Madison Symphony Orchestra ever since. The chorus is comprised of more than 150 volunteer musicians who come from all walks of life who enjoy combining their artistic talent. In 2017, the chorus sang three Brahms Requiems in Germany with regional orchestras under Ms. Taylor’s direction.

In recent seasons, the Chorus has joined the MSO for such awe-inspiring works as Beethoven’s 9th Symphony “Ode to Joy,” Mahler’s Symphony of a Thousand, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass, Rossini’s jubilant Stabat Mater, the Requiems of both Verdi and Mozart, and Holst’s The Planets, among others.

Madison Youth Choirs (MYC) is dedicated to inspiring youth with a choral experience that fosters creativity, reflection, and the exploration of diverse ideas, while welcoming singers of all ability levels, annually serving more than 1000 young people, ages 7-18, through a wide variety of choral programs in our community. MOUNT ZION GOSPEL ENSEMBLE Tamera and Leotha Stanley, Directors

Under the leadership of Leotha Stanley, a 2008 Wisconsin Academy of Arts, Letters and Sciences Minerva Laureate, and his wife, Tamera Stanley, the Mount Zion Gospel Choir has been a part of the Madison Symphony Orchestra Christmas concerts since 2005.

The Stanleys call their work “Gospel Carols,” and previous MSO Christmas concerts have featured: “Silent Night,” “O Come All Ye Faithful,” “This Christmas,” “Joy To The World,” “Amen,” and “Go Tell It On The Mountain.” They have also presented a number of originals, including: “Jesus Is The Reason For The Season,” “A Christmas Greeting,” “The Spirit Of Christmas is Love,” “The Joy of Christmas,” and this year, “Christmas Hope.”

The choir is primarily comprised of members from Mount Zion Baptist Church, however, others churches are represented, including: High Point Church, Unitarian Church, Christ The Solid Rock, Door Creek, Bethel Lutheran, Fountain of Life, and others.

The choir has travelled extensively throughout the Midwest and has been an opening performance for: The Five Blind Boys of Alabama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the UW Marching Band, Michael Bolton, The Winans, Yolanda Adams, and other noted artists. The choir has also journeyed to Europe, singing in France and Germany.
