I have wanted to program Schumann’s Symphony No. 1 for quite some time now. I can’t believe that the Madison Symphony has never performed this beautiful work on its subscription concerts. It is a particular favorite of mine, and I wanted to play it in the season that it is named after: the Spring. In fact, all four movements were conceived around the idea of spring and the sense of joy and renewal that comes with this time of the year. We also welcome back Augustin Hadelich, who since he first appeared with our orchestra has gone on to a major international concert and recording career. I had the pleasure to hear him play again last summer, and again, was thrilled with has dexterity and intense music making. He is a natural to play the Dvořák Violin Concerto, which, shortly after its premiere, became one of the most popular concertos during the end of the nineteenth century.

Opening the concert is one of my discovery pieces, Benjamin Britten’s Sinfonia da Requiem. I’m really excited to reintroduce this work to a whole new generation. The middle movement is fiendishly difficult and will be exciting to rehearse for our performances. It is considered to be a masterpiece, was written in the United States, and established Britten in a new light as one of England’s major new composers. I hope you will find this program to be thought-provoking, and, in the end, a delightful way to usher in the spring season, which we all wait for with great impatience at this time of year.
