Our Fall Youth Concerts, which had a program titled “Stories Told Through Music,” took place in Overture Hall on Tuesday, Nov. 12, and had more than 5,000 attendees across three performances! This is the highest attendance since 2008.

As the winner of our Fall Youth Concerto Competitions, eighth grade violinist Clark Snavely performed Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole, Mvt. I as a soloist with the Madison Symphony Orchestra during these concerts. Dr. Linda Vakunta, Deputy Mayor of Madison, was the narrator and Kyle Knox conducted. “For centuries,

BOLZ YOUNG ARTIST COMPETITION/THE FINAL FORTE The Bolz Young Artist Competition is a highly-regarded, statewide competition in which Wisconsin’s young musicians compete for scholarships and the opportunity to perform as soloists with the Madison Symphony Orchestra. Students in grades 9–12 are eligible to compete. Preliminary rounds were held on October 26 and November 2, and there were a total of 32 competitors over the two Saturdays.

Hooper Provides Fifty Years of Support On June 20, 1968, a letter was received from Mr. Charles Arnold of the C.A. Hooper Company, addressed to Manager John R. Reel of the Madison Civic Music Association. “Thank you for your generous contribution,” the letter opens. “Under the fine leadership of Roland Johnson, the Madison Symphony continues to grow in artistic excellence, and in the degree and quality of service to the community.”

Nearly fifty years later, the Hooper Company — now the Hooper Corporation — is still located at 2030 Pennsylvania Avenue, near the former Oscar Mayer plant. And it still contributes to the Madison Symphony, with the annual Christmas concert its favorite performance to sponsor. Each year, the Hooper group enjoys an evening of concert festivities, including dinner at the Madison Club, listening to carols sung in the Overture lobby by the Madison Symphony Chorus, then the symphony concert and a post-concert party with musicians.

Nowadays, Hooper’s philanthropic reach is substantial. The Hooper Foundation supports charities that focus on health and wellness, education, hunger and homelessness, and arts and culture. It also offers a matching donation program to encourage employees to donate.

Hooper Corporation, founded in 1913 as a mechanical contractor, also offers electrical and plumbing contracting services, working on large and complex projects all over the United States. Hooper Corporation installs and maintains overhead transmission and distribution lines and substations and trees. In the mechanical division, Hooper works with health care facilities to install or retrofit plumbing, fire protection and heating/ventilation systems. And much more.

Hooper’s projects have included Overture Center for the Arts, Gebhardt Development’s East Washington Avenue project, Vintage Brewing and offices, the new Hamel Music Center, the Milwaukee Bucks’ new arena, and Epic.

Hooper’s footprint in Madison is not always obvious, but would be impossible to overstate. And that includes fifty years of contributions to the Madison Symphony. On behalf of the orchestra, our board and staff, many thanks to Hooper Corporation for all of its support!

MADISON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA LEAGUE NEWS 2019 SYMPHONY GALA On Friday, September 13th, at the Madison Concourse, the Madison Symphony Orchestra League presented the John DeMain Award for Outstanding Commitment to Music to Marian Bolz. The award recognizes an individual or individuals for their longstanding and unwavering support of the League, the Madison Symphony Orchestra and music in the community. This year’s gala celebrated Marian Bolz for her engagement, dedication and enthusiasm for MSO and MSOL. Marian is a Life Director of the Madison Symphony Orchestra,

and a founder and Life Member of the Madison Symphony Orchestra League, and has given generously of her time and talent during her extraordinary 63year commitment to the Symphony.

Musical performances highlighting the MSO Education and Outreach programs were features of the evening. Bolz Young Artist Competition finalists Monona Suzuki and Antonio Wu provided superb musical performances to start the evening and were given an opportunity to speak about their experiences with MSO and the Bolz competition. The Rhapsodie Quartet provided music during the evening’s program. The quartet presents the HeartStrings® program, bringing live, interactive music to healthcare and

residential facilities, including Marian and Jack Bolz’s home, Capitol Lakes.

Anders Yocom was the Master of Ceremonies for the evening and he also led the production of a Marian Bolz tribute video in partnership with NBC15.

The video provided historical context of the early years of MSOL as well as history of MSO and bringing in John DeMain as MSO music director.

Capitol Lakes was the sponsor of the John DeMain award, and executive director Tim Conroy spoke about why they support MSO and how important it is to their community. Capitol Lakes is home to many MSO supporters.

Marian was presented with a glass vase award and she and her family were given the “Book of Marian.” The book is a compilation of photos documenting Marian’s efforts to increase the community’s support for MSO and MSOL. The Gala committee and MSO staff provided exemplary leadership and generosity of their time to create a wonderful evening.

MSOL RECOGNIZED WITH NATIONAL AWARD Two MSOL initiatives were recently recognized by the Volunteer Council of the League of American Orchestras. The first is a Gold Book Award of Excellence for 2017 to Present: MSOL E-News: Reaching Members in the Digital Age. The award recognizes best-in-class projects that have had a significant impact. Winning projects were selected by council members based upon originality, volunteer involvement, adaptability by other volunteer organizations, and the overall success of the project in meeting its stated goals.

The second is a Spotlight Award for 2019 Madison Symphony Orchestra League Volunteer Appreciation Party. The award is given to projects that have contributed to the success of an overall initiative or for a noteworthy tactic or activity.

JUST BACH CONCERTS CONTINUE THIS WINTER One Wednesday each month, at Luther Memorial Church, 1021 University Ave. This series of FREE midday concerts features Bach Cantatas, instrumental solos and chamber music, performed one-on-a-part on period instruments. The series enjoyed a successful launch last year, and continues this year as part of the Music at Midday series at Luther Memorial. Winter dates: Dec. 18, Jan. 22, and Feb. 19, all at 12:00 p.m. MSO violinist Leanne League and MSO violist Marika Fischer Hoyt are among the players. Visit justbach.org for more information.

ANCORA STRING QUARTET ON-AIR AND ON STAGE February Program Pairs Beethoven with American Composer Randall Thompson The Ancora String Quartet, with MSO violinists Wes Luke and Robin Ryan, and MSO violist Marika Fischer Hoyt, will be interviewed by WPR’s Norman Gilliland on The Midday on Fri. Feb. 7 at 12:00 p.m. about its winter concerts on Tue. Feb. 4 at 7:00 p.m. in the Grand Hall at Capitol Lakes, with subsequent performances Feb. 8 and 9 in Sauk City and Milwaukee. The program includes Randall Thompson’s sprightly, lyrical Quartet No. 2 in G Major, and Beethoven’s Quartet in B-flat Major Op. 130, with Beethoven’s alternate final movement (saving the Große Fuge for another time).

Symphony Single tickets for 2019–2020 season concerts are $19–$95. Seniors (62 and over) and students save 20% in select seating areas, and students can purchase up to two $15 or $20 Student Rush tickets on the day of the concert at the Overture Center Box Office. Discounts are subject to availability and cannot be combined.
