orm and Kathi Tew have lived in their Silver Creek home for more than 20 years after moving to Madison from Washington, D.C. In the 1990s, very few new homes in Madison included a home office and four bedrooms, Kathi said.

“The most exciting aspect was that the builder was willing to act as a contractor, which allowed me to build the home exactly how I wanted it.”

The Tews’ home is a traditional red brick house with various roof pitches. Vinyl siding in the back mimics traditional shake siding. With approximately 5,000 square feet for 17 rooms, the house also has

a deck and a covered back veranda that seat 14 people; this space serves as an outdoor dining area.

Decorating the home herself, Kathi spent the early years of married life both teaching painting and selling art, allowing her to work from home.

“Although I haven’t picked up a brush in years, my home is my palate. I love mixing colors and fabrics to create the unexpected,” she said.

Black is the most common color running through the house, with color bursts in golds, burgundy, browns, greens and oranges. The house is decorated with art throughout, especially nature scenes.

To find Norm’s favorite room, go outside to the veranda. “He loves coming home from work, turning on the 9-foot fountain and relaxing while enjoying the gardens in the backyard,” Kathi said.

The back dining room is her choice spot. The room seats 12 people. “The table is rustic, so all the family, including our five grandchildren, can eat together without fear of hurting anything,” she said. “We don’t have to lug chairs from one place to another.”

The home’s flooring includes hand-scraped brown oak, yellow maple, tile and carpet. Wide baseboards and extensive crown molding accentuate each room. “The house is very eclectic and comfortable – a mix of dressy, casual, French and traditional,” she said. Kathi drew the kitchen’s oak cabinets and designed several other pieces, like the back dining table and buffet.

Norm and Kathi welcome time that they can devote to work in their lawn. “We divide and conquer,” Kathi said. “I take care of 37 seasonal pots.

Norm takes care of the lawn and all plants in the ground.”

The Tews’ 13-year-old granddaughter MacKenzie, who is a seventh-grader, lives with them. Norm works for The Boeing Company, and Kathi devotes time as a community volunteer.

Kathi grew up in Denver, Colo., while Norm is a Dothan native.

T

he Women’s Economic Development Council Foundation hosted its annual Women Honoring Women event and fundraiser in late September at the VBC North Hall, with the theme “When Perseverance Meets Passion.”

Beth Brooks, executive director of the WEDC Foundation, said the chosen theme came about when the 2016 WHW chairperson, Dawn Pumpelly, was considering the perseverance and determination the

scholars face when working to achieve financial and personal independence.

“We have the passion, and we help raise money so (our scholars) can continue their education, graduate with a degree and obtain jobs in their chosen careers,” Brooks explained In addition to the flexible financial assistance, each scholar is paired with a mentor, who is a professional business woman in the community.

Brooks said when the perseverance of the scholar “meets the passion of the Foundation, I think it kind of explodes. It’s really a great thing, what our Foundation does for the women in our community.”

The Women Honoring Women event is the major fundraiser for the Foundation and its scholarship program. The six honorees recognized at this year’s celebration were Jennie Robinson, Ph.D.., Huntsville City Council representative; Barbara

Fast, retired major general, U.S. Army, BGF Enterprises, LLC; Butch Damson, community volunteer and philanthropist; Christine Wicks, Keller Williams Realty, InTown Partners Real Estate Group; Shelia Nash-Stevenson, Ph.D., NASA/ Marshall Space Flight Center; and Elizabeth A. Worthey, PhD., HudsonAlpha Institute for Biology.

hand that got them through. It’s not just the women that we help, but it’s also their children and the attitude of their families.

So, it’s really a ripple effect through the community.”

Brooks concurred, “We’re changing lives.”

The WEDC Foundation welcomed back for the fourth year as presenting sponsor for the Women Honoring Women event Woody Anderson Ford and its CEO Cathy Anderson. Because of sponsors like Woody Anderson Ford, the WEDC Foundation continues to fund their program.

Every great game needs a great plate to go along with it, and one or more of these dishes are sure to hit the spot. All recipes are originals created by Giffin, unless otherwise noted.

Southwest Pasta Salad INGREDIENTS: 1 (16-ounce) package penne or small tube pasta Creamy Southwestern Salad Dressing (recipe follows) Romaine lettuce leaves 1 (15-ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained 1 (8 3/4-ounce) can whole kernel corn, rinsed and drained 1 sweet red pepper, chopped 2 green onions, sliced 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro Garnish: fresh cilantro sprigs PROCEDURE: 1. Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain. Rinse with cold water. Drain.

2. Prepare Creamy Southwestern Salad Dressing.

3. Combine pasta and 1-3/4 cups creamy Southwestern salad dressing in a medium mixing bowl. Toss gently. Chill.

4. Wash lettuce leaves and pat dry with paper towels. Place in refrigerator between damp towels until ready to use.

5. Rinse and drain beans and corn, keeping separate. Chop pepper and cilantro and slice onions.

6. Line a large platter with lettuce leaves. Spoon the pasta mixture onto the platter. Arrange remaining ingredients on pasta in layers, beginning with black beans, then corn, chopped red pepper and sliced green onions. Sprinkle chopped cilantro over salad. Garnish with cilantro sprigs. Serve with remaining dressing.

Yield: six main dish servings.

CREAMY SOUTHWESTERN SALAD DRESSING INGREDIENTS: 1 (8-ounce) carton nonfat sour cream 1 (15.5-ounce) jar mild thick-and-chunky salsa 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 2 cloves garlic, minced PROCEDURE: 1. Combine all ingredients in a medium mixing bowl.

Chill. Yield: 2 3/4 cups.

NOTE: For tailgating, individual salads can be layered into small glass jars.

Beer Chili INGREDIENTS:

3 lbs. ground chuck 1/2 cup diced onion 1/4 cup diced celery 1/4 cup diced green pepper (optional) 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon fresh ground pepper 2 teaspoons chili powder 1/2 teaspoon cumin 6 slices pickled jalapeno pepper 1 (28 oz.) can diced tomatoes with basil, garlic and oregano 1 (28 oz.) can tomato sauce 1 1/2 cups chicken or beef broth 1 tablespoon cider vinegar 1 (12-oz.) can beer Garnish: sour cream, chopped green onion, shredded cheese

PROCEDURE: 1. Saute onion and celery in olive oil in a large Dutch oven over medium heat until tender. Add salt, pepper, chili powder and cumin and saute briefly, being careful not to burn chili powder. Add ground beef and cook until no longer pink, leaving meat in small chunks. Drain in a colander to remove excess fat.

2. Add remaining ingredients and simmer 30 minutes over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Taste and make any seasoning adjustments.

Yield: approximately 3 quarts.

NOTE: If con carne style is preferred, add one 15.5-ounce can drained red kidney beans the last 10 minutes to heat through. Serve with Tostitos Dippers – no need for a spoon!

Glazed Spice Bars

CURRIED SHRIMP SPREAD

INGREDIENTS: 1 cup sugar 3/4 cup vegetable oil 1/4 cup honey 1 egg 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup chopped pecans (optional) Glaze: 1 cup powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon mayonnaise, 1 teaspoon vanilla and 3-4 teaspoons water

PROCEDURE: 1. Heat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Combine sugar, oil, honey and egg in a medium mixing bowl; mix well. In a small bowl or on waxed or parchment paper, stir together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, salt and pecans; stir into sugar/oil mixture.

3. Spread evenly in a 13x9x2-inch pan. Bake 15-20 minutes. Spread with glaze (1 cup powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon mayonnaise, 1 teaspoon vanilla and 3-4 teaspoons water, blended well) while hot. Cool; cut into bars. Refrigerate. Yield: 24 bars.

INGREDIENTS: 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened 1/4 cup mayonnaise 1/2 teaspoon curry powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1 (4.5-ounce) can shrimp, drained, rinsed and chopped (or use 1/3 to 1/2 pound medium, fresh cooked, chopped shrimp) 1/4 cup sliced green onion 1 hard-cooked egg, chopped Norwegian flat bread or buttery crackers (Ritz) PROCEDURE: 1. Beat cream cheese with an electric mixer until smooth. Add mayonnaise and curry powder and beat until smooth.

2. Stir in salt, pepper, chopped shrimp, sliced green onion and chopped egg to combine. Chill several hours or overnight.

Serve at room temperature with flat bread or crackers. Yield: 8-10 servings.

Spring Rolls (Lumpias) with Chicken or Shrimp Taught to me by former student Chona Rocha

INGREDIENTS: 2 medium carrots, peeled 1/2 pound green beans, ends removed 1/2 medium head of cabbage, finely hand-shredded 1 large clove garlic, minced 1/2 pound large shrimp, deveined and tails removed 1/2 pound chicken tenderloins Salt and pepper 2 packages frozen Lumpia or Wei-chuan Spring Roll wraps (not egg roll wrappers) 1 egg, beaten with 2 tablespoons water Oil for frying

PROCEDURE: 1. Quarter carrots horizontally, then vertically. Cut into very small bias cut pieces, turning 1/4 turn after each cut. (Small, uniform cuts are important.)

2. Cut green beans into very small bias cut pieces, turning 1/4 turn after each cut.

3. Stir fry carrots and green beans in 1-2 tablespoons oil in a large saute pan or wok until just tender, about 1-2 minutes. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and 1/3 of the minced garlic.

Add shredded cabbage and stir 1-2 minutes until wilted. Remove vegetables to a tray or baking pan and spread to cool.

4. Add 1 tablespoon oil to saute pan and add shrimp. Sprinkle lightly with salt and pepper and cook 1-2 minutes or until pink. Flip shrimp, add 1/3 of the minced garlic and saute 1-2 minutes or until pink. Remove to small plate and set aside.

5. Add 1 tablespoon oil to saute pan and add chicken tenders; sprinkle lightly with salt and pepper and cook 2-3 minutes or until no longer pink. Flip chicken tenders, add remaining 1/3 minced garlic and saute 2-3 minutes or until just done and no longer pink inside. Remove to a small plate. Cool slightly.

6. Cut the shrimp and chicken separately into small pieces. Divide the vegetables in half and stir shrimp into one half and chicken into the other half. This allows two choices. At this point, the ingredients can be covered and refrigerated overnight.

7. To make spring rolls: Remove wrappers from freezer and let defrost at room temperature for 30 minutes. Keep wrappers covered with a

damp towel while rolling spring rolls. Position a spring roll wrapper on counter like a diamond, with points at top, bottom, right and left. Place approximately 1 tablespoon filling about 1/3 from the bottom point and spread out from right to left, approximately 2 1/2 -3 inches wide.

Fold bottom point of wrapper toward top over the filling, pulling it toward the bottom slightly to get a tight roll. Fold right point toward center of filling, then left point toward center over filling. Roll from bottom up, making sure to roll tightly. Moisten the last corner with egg wash on the underside to seal roll.

8. Place spring rolls on a tray and cover with a damp towel until all rolls are made. Make sure to keep the two types separate for identification.

9. Cook spring rolls, three or four at a time, in a medium saute pan with approximately 1 1/2-2 inches of oil at 350 degrees, turning until light golden brown on all sides. Drain on a wire rack. Serve with your choice of Duck Sauce or Sweet Chili Sauce. Yield: approximately 40 spring rolls. Allow two or three rolls per person as an appetizer or part of a meal.

NOTE: Freeze spring rolls in zip-top freezer bags. Place a small piece of waxed or parchment paper between layers; label and date. Frozen spring rolls keep well 4-6 months. Remove from freezer and let thaw before frying. Recipe is time consuming but well worth the effort – better than any you will eat anywhere! Making the recipe over two different days makes it seem less labor intensive. For tailgating, fry these in a heavy Dutch oven with 3-4 inches of oil, on the side burner of a grill.

Baked Honey Ginger Chicken Wings Adapted from Pinterest INGREDIENTS: 4 pounds chicken wings, drumettes and mid-section 2 teaspoons grated ginger 1 large clove garlic, grated 3 tablespoons soy sauce 3 tablespoons oyster sauce 1/2 cup honey 3 tablespoons rice wine vinegar 3 tablespoons Asian sweet chili sauce 1/2 teaspoon white pepper 1 tablespoon sesame oil 4 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds PROCEDURE: 1. Line a large baking sheet with heavyduty foil; spray with cooking spray. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

2. Pat chicken wings dry with paper towels and lightly salt and pepper. Arrange wings in a single layer on pan.

3. In a small sauce pan whisk together the ginger, garlic, soy sauce, oyster sauce, honey, rice wine vinegar, chili sauce, white pepper and sesame oil.

Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low and cook and stir for two to three minutes or until slightly thickened. Reserve 1/3 of the sauce and set aside to use as a dipping sauce.

4. Baste wings with 1/3 of the remaining sauce, flip wings over and baste second side. Cook wings at 400 degrees for 15 minutes; baste wings a second time and cook for another 15 minutes. Set oven to broil. Baste the wings with the pan drippings and broil one to two minutes or until golden and glazed and skin is crispy; flip and repeat. Serve with remaining sauce. Yield: six servings NOTE: For tailgating, wings can be prepared in advanced and reheated for 1-2 minutes per side on a 350-degree grill.

SPICED CARAMEL POPCORN CRUNCH

INGREDIENTS: 4 quarts popped corn 1 cup toasted pecans 1 cup shelled pistachios 1/2 cup white chocolate chips 1/2 cup milk chocolate chips 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/4 cup light corn syrup 1/2 cup butter 1/2 teaspoon coarse sea salt 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 teaspoon Chinese 5-Spice Coarse sea salt

PROCEDURE: 1. Spray a large shallow baking pan with nonstick spray. Spread popcorn on pan and remove un-popped kernels. Sprinkle the pecans, pistachios, white chocolate and milk chocolate chips evenly over the popcorn.

2. Combine brown and granulated sugars, butter, and corn syrup and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a heavy saucepan; heat to boiling over medium heat, stirring constantly. Lower temperature to low and continue boiling, stirring occasionally, for 10-15 minutes longer or until mixture turns a medium caramel color.

3. Remove from heat; stir in baking soda, vanilla, and Chinese 5-Spice. Pour over popcorn mix; stir to coat and spread out to cool and dry. Break apart and store in tightly covered container. Yield: approximately 10 cups.

A

s Madison’s new fire chief, David Bailey has wasted no time becoming acquainted with co-workers in Madison Fire & Rescue Department and immersing his family in Madison living.

For 35 years, he served Chesterfield Fire/EMS in Virginia and as battalion chief with six stations the last 10 years. Serving as fire chief in Harriman, Tenn., with cooperative city leaders was a great experience, Bailey said about his last job. However, the community “did not provide the balance my wife and I desired to raise our children. It was evident early in our research that Madison is a great place to raise a family and has progressive local government and fire service.” He joined the Madison force as chief in April 2017.

Madison Fire Department operates from three stations with three EMS first-response SUVs, three engine companies and one ladder truck/heavy rescue company. The 74-member department includes 27 firefighters, 21 drivers, 16 captains, three battalion chiefs, two deputy chiefs, one logistics officer, one safety officer and two on administrative staff. As fire chief, Bailey must confirm “all department members are provided with everything they need to serve the public and meet our mission. These items include effective training, equipment and supplies, safe staffing levels and efficient apparatus, facilities and work practices.”

Modern fire service, Bailey said, “reduces the impact of risks to our citizens and visitors to the minimum … with proactive services of fire prevention activities, community risk reduction activities and prompt response to emergencies and disasters. For this goal, Bailey must collaborate with other agencies, from mental health to weather preparedness.

“I’m very blessed now to serve the City of Madison. I never envisioned living in North Alabama, but, as always, God’s plan is much better than anything I could have created,” Bailey said. “Madison Fire Department is the perfect size for me and allows me to get to know each member.”

“As we continue to grow,” Bailey added, “we’ll need to add one or more stations … to meet our response times, on-scene apparatus and staffing goals. We

During Bailey’s career, Fire Chief Rick Bucher at Chesterfield and Powhatan County, Virginia, has been a role model. When Bailey was a rookie, Bucher was company commander. “In 35 years I served with Rick, I never saw him not smiling. I think he smiled when he slept,” Bailey said. “No matter how long of a day or night, how intense the situation at hand, Rick always maintained a positive outlook. He always treated everyone in an uplifting fashion. Although not as consistent as Rick, I try to follow his model.”

He completed the four-year Executive Fire Officer Program at National Fire Academy.

“My bride of 27 years is Kathi Bailey – a homemaker, lovingly referred to as ‘domestic engineer,’” he said. Their children are Josh Bailey, 19, now looking at colleges; Meigan, 11, sixth-grader at Mill Creek Elementary School; and Abbey, 9, Mill Creek fourth-grader. The family attends Madison United Methodist Church.

David participates in the North Alabama Fire Chief Association. Kathi has joined Madison Hospital Women’s Council.

After running several half-marathons, David was training for a full marathon when knee problems sidelined him. “I’m back to running about four days a week. My goal is to maintain cardiovascular health and avoid knee surgery.

It’s all about balance in life.”

The Baileys’ to-do list includes greenways, skate park, horseback riding, laser tag, movies, hi-tech science venues and Alabama beaches.

“As a family, we plan to explore all that Madison, Huntsville and Alabama have to offer,” David said.

hink October. First, you probably envision patches of orange with pumpkins and not-so-friendly goblins. However, pink is October’s true signature color, as the community rallies for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

To confront the disease, Madison Hospital is adding another MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging unit. “MRI technology is so advanced and is an efficient diagnostic tool. This technology will provide more access for our community, closer to home,” Madison Hospital President Mary Lynne Wright said.

With two MRI machines, Madison Hospital can better meet the demands of both a growing Emergency Department and outpatient needs. Along with the MRI, the hospital is securing a new nuclear medicine camera. This capital investment of approximately $2.3 million documents another example of the hospital’s investment to the community’s health, Wright said.

“We’ll be able to perform breast MRIs. Currently, if a woman has a mammogram and the radiologist feels she needs further diagnostic studies, a MRI can be ordered. Now that means a trip to Huntsville, but, with our new MRI, women can come to Madison Hospital for their MRI,” Wright said.

Madison Hospital’s new MRI scanner will be outfitted with a dedicated breast coil – a special piece of equipment needed to measure the size of breast tumors and pinpoint their exact location, along with checking the opposite breast. Using that information, physicians develop treatment plans for breast cancer patients.

“Getting the breast coil is a huge deal for women in the Madison area,” said Emily McGough, who works as an MRI technologist at Madison Hospital. “When their doctor orders a breast MRI, they can now go right around the corner to their community hospital instead of driving to Huntsville.

That sort of convenience is important when you’re facing a serious illness.”

From a clinical perspective, the machine’s bore is larger “than our current one. Patients that are claustrophobic will find this MRI not so confining,” Wright said. “We can also perform studies on patients that have had a total knee or hip replacement.

This technology allows us to study the joint’s anatomy with no issue.”

For additional patient comfort, a sound system in the MRI allows a patient to select any type of music genre. The music can distract patients from the magnet’s sounds during a study.

Huntsville Hospital Foundation is providing funding for this additional MRI technology package. Established in 1978, the nonprofit foundation serves as Huntsville Hospital’s fundraising arm. To boost the hospital’s continuing growth, the foundation accepts gifts, both individual and corporate, on the hospital’s behalf and works to fund both present and future equipment and program needs. In 1998 Hurley, a respected news anchor with WAFF-48 television, was diagnosed with breast cancer. This disease had taken her mother when Hurley was a child. Hurley received extensive chemotherapy and underwent a double mastectomy.

The fund’s generous supporters have raised approximately $3 million to support breast cancer awareness and equip Huntsville and Madison Hospitals’ Breast Centers with the latest diagnostic technology.

The Ribbon Run attracts 6,500-plus Madison County residents to run and walk in honor or memory of loved ones who have battled breast cancer. Oct. 21 at 8 a.m., Madison residents can join their neighbors for the 14th annual 5K event through downtown Huntsville. McGough and administrative resident Harsha Srikakolapu are organizing Madison Hospital’s team for the 2017 Liz Hurley Ribbon Run. Proceeds from the 2017 Ribbon Run will be used to purchase 3-D tomosynthesis mammography equipment. This technology creates multiple 3-D pictures of the breast using X-rays, making breast cancer easier to detect in dense breast tissue.

Hospital growth means good things for Madison

ven before Madison Hospital opened in 2012, we knew we would eventually need to expand beyond 60 beds.

That time has come.

Patient volumes have risen steadily, and it’s been clear for a while that more beds are needed to serve our fast-growing community. Recognizing this reality, the state Certificate of Need Review Board has approved our plan to add 30 more inpatient beds, giving us a total of 90.

Construction crews are on campus now building those new private rooms for medical-surgical and intensive care patients.

Madison Hospital was designed with about 18,000 square feet of unfinished “shell space” on the fourth and fifth floors to accommodate future growth, and that’s where the work is happening. We hope to have the new patient rooms ready by the end of this year, and we’re in the process of hiring more nurses to staff them.

This isn’t the only construction project on our radar. Eventually, we will need to expand our Labor & Delivery floor, build a new wing for our busy Emergency Department and add more operating rooms so more residents of our community can have surgery closer to home.

rett Potter proves himself a human dynamo with strong-willed perseverance to meet and exceed his self-imposed goals.

Dominating fellow competitors, Brett won 11 medals in the World Dwarf Games at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. He accumulated three gold, two silver and six bronze medals.

Brett, a sixth-grader at Mill Creek Elementary School, competed against hundreds of athletes with dwarfism from 22 countries in early August. The United States, Canada, Great Britain and Australia had the most entrants. The games included numerous sports, including badminton, shotput, basketball, swimming and even curling.

“His winning 11 medals was amazing,” Brett’s father Eric Potter said. Brett’s age group, 7- to 11-year-olds, included about 50 boys, most in the older range.

Similar to the Olympics, the World Dwarf Games had an opening ceremony with an entrance by each country’s delegation. The public could view all events, each ending with a medal ceremony. A closing celebration concluded the Games.

“For Brett’s age, many boys play sports with average-height kids and must play extremely hard to keep up,” Eric said. “World Dwarf Games gave them the opportunity to level the playing field.

These are some of the most competitive kids you’ll ever watch.”

The Games’ only qualification is that competitors must have a diagnosis of a form of dwarfism.

Brett decided to sign up for practically all games to achieve a diversified sports background. Eric helped his son prepare for events, focusing more on certain sports. “Brett really enjoyed badminton, so we practiced a lot,” Eric said. Brett also practiced field events in his back yard and shot basketball. “In some sports, he went ‘cold’ and got his experience real time.”

Table tennis is a good example. Brett never had played because he couldn’t see over the table. Game officials added a platform for competitors to stand on. “Brett gave it a shot and really enjoyed it but didn’t do as well because he wasn’t as prepared,” Eric said.

the gym at Columbia Elementary so I could practice badminton and boccia with my dad,” Brett said. After buying a shotput and discus, Eric and Brett learned throwing technique on YouTube.

At the games, Brett quickly became friends with Preston Ly from Canada after meeting him in badminton. “Preston really liked baseball, so we talked about it a lot. I got to play catch with him one day, and he was a very good competitor. We’re staying in touch and want to go to a baseball game together next year,” Brett said. “It was nice to hang out with my USA friends that I know from yearly national conferences. My best friends were Eli Whiteaker from Ohio and Peter Gray from California,” Brett said. These boys played on Team USA basketball, floor

hockey and volleyball together. They hung out at the hotel and attended a Blue Jays game. Eli will meet Brett in Kansas City for a Royals game this fall.

“I also met a new friend, Aidan Cockrell, from Birmingham.

Aidan came to play with me last weekend when my sister had a softball tournament in Birmingham,” Brett said.

Brett’s most challenging sport was swimming. “The swimmers were so much better than I expected.” The easiest sport was basketball. “We had a great team that worked together. Basketball is an American sport, and most of us play at home with average-height teams,” Brett said.

Back at home, Brett will play baseball with Coach Matt Kimbrel’s travel team this fall. “I also love going to Kansas Royals games. I’ve been on the Mill Creek Archery Team two years. I also enjoy playing with friends and my two kitties,” Brett said.

In school, social studies is Brett’s favorite subject. “I like learning about history and the rest of the world,” he said. “My least favorite is reading because I get bored and would rather play outside.”

For his future in sports, Brett said he plans to play baseball as long as he can. “I want to be a Major League ball player. I also want to get good at badminton and get to the Paralympics to represent Team USA. The next World Dwarf Games will be in four years, but I don’t know what country yet.”

Brett’s parents are Eric and Annette Potter. Eric works as a senior engineer at a major aerospace company. Annette is a nurse practitioner with HEALS, or Health Establishments at Local Schools, that assists in-need children. Brett’s 9-yearold sister Hannah is a third-grader at Mill Creek.

‘UNMISTAKABLE IMPACT’ Kimberly Stewart promotes power of education at Discovery

A

fter working 20 years for Madison City Schools, Kimberly Stewart accepted the position of principal at Discovery Middle School in June 2017.

Her career as an educator began with St. Louis (Mo.) Public Schools as a sixth-grade science teacher at Compton-Drew Investigative Learning Center Middle School. In 1997 her husband Dwight was relocated to Redstone Arsenal with his job, and Kimberly started teaching language arts at Discovery.

After 13.5 years, Kimberly moved to Horizon Elementary School as assistant principal. She returned to Discovery as assistant principal in August 2015.

“Money, space and time represent the top needs of Madison City Schools in my opinion,” she said. “Our district is doing a great job of looking at the needs of our students as it relates to the continued growth of our community. We’re currently working to prepare for the upcoming transition of our sixth-grade students to middle school. In addition to growth concerns, it also takes money and time to ensure that our students’ social, emotional and mental health needs, as well as their academic needs, are met.”

With these needs ever changing, educators must exert great effort to stay abreast of the challenges students face to appropriately address student needs, she said.

In her teaching philosophy, Kimberly agrees with author Jim Knight’s concept that “teaching should have an ‘unmistakable impact’ on the learning and achievement of all students. I believe, in an effort to ensure an unmistakable impact, teachers inspire innovation, expect excellence and celebrate success,” she said.

Success looks different for each individual student, Kimberly added. “As such, I expect students to earn grades that reflect growth in their learning.”

In the “never forget” category for students, Kimberly often recalls “a very intelligent young man who was quite often getting off task in my class. Consequently, I gave him the challenge of teaching the class while I displayed the same off-task behavior that he exhibited.

That student wrote about the important lesson he learned.”

The student moved. Four years later, Kimberly received a letter from him as an assignment to write to a teacher that he appreciated.

He never forgot about “how I pushed and encouraged him to be his best. That experience taught me that little things matter and are worth the effort when trying to help students get the big picture,” she said.

Her husband Dwight Stewart works as chief, Business Acquisition Branch, for the U.S. Army on Redstone Arsenal. “I’ve been married 25 years and have two wonderful children,” Kimberly said. Nadia, 18, recently graduated from Bob Jones High School and is a freshman majoring in elementary education at University of North Alabama. Nathan, 14, is a Bob Jones freshman and basketball team member.

“My family attends First Missionary Baptist Church in Huntsville. I serve as Sunday school teacher for first- through third-graders and a teacher and leader of the Children’s Church ministry,” Kimberly said.

She devotes spare time to scrapbooking, reading, cooking and spending time with family.
