MADISON – The Madison on Track 2045 initiative has scheduled Community Vision Workshops and follow-up meetings for residents on July 25-29.

Madison on Track 2045 involves community-based planning to shape Madison’s future by updating the city’s Comprehensive Plan. As a comprehensive plan, Madison on Track 2045 will be a policy document for use by city leaders, developers, business owners and citizens to make decisions about future growth, development, policy, and capital

improvements.

A week of intensive community planning has been scheduled for July 25-29. Residents can attend one of three community workshops, stop in at an open house or visit at the downtown farmers’ market to share ideas, reflect on input and provide feedback on plan direction.

Community Vision Workshops on July 26-27 held in three different locations will have the same agenda. Interactive discussion will include a series of exercises to help the community begin to envision ways that Madison will evolve, based on existing conditions, growth trends and future

projections. All ages welcome.

MADISON – Despite the blazing outside temperature, firefighters with Madison Fire and Rescue Department responded to two fires last week.

“The first fire was located at a residence off Palmer Road on Saturday, July 9 around 12 p.m. The fire caused extensive damage to the home and was ruled unintentional in nature,” Captain Ryan Gentry said. Gentry works as a paramedic and as Community Outreach Representative and Public Information Officer for Madison Fire and Rescue Department.

“The second fire was at the Red Roof Inn at 8781 Madison Blvd. on Wednesday, July 13 around 2 a.m. and was caused by lightning. The damage to this building was minor and located in the roof area of one the extend-

ed-stay buildings,” Gentry said.

“C shift crews (were working) the past couple of shifts. Great job by our crews for their quick and hard work on their two fires in two shifts,” Gentry said.

“C shift” is one of the shifts for Madison firefighters. “As we work 24 hours on duty and then are off duty for 48 hours, we have A, B and C shift, which all work 24 hours and then are off for 48 hours,” Gentry said.

“Reminder – It’s always important to have working smoke detectors in our homes,” he said.

MADISON – Most people would be complacent after receiving a national award. Not Anna Clare Kelly, who has set her sights on the next level as a Congressional Award winner.

Anna Clare has earned the Bronze Congressional Award for her volunteering at Madison Senior Center. She is a prospective freshman at Westminster Christian Academy.

The 14-year-old started working on the award in summer 2021, as soon as she was eligible. Award guidelines require volunteers to be 13.5 years minimum. Anna Clare’s siblings, 16-year-old Belle and 18-year-old Joseph, both have received Congressional Award Gold Medals.

gress established the Congressional Award to recognize initiative, service and achievement in youth. The Congressional Award provides opportunities for young people to unleash their potential by achieving personal goals focused on volunteerism, character development and fitness. By far, Madison Senior Center has been Anna Clare’s favorite activity.

“She has learned that she really has a heart for working with seniors and is considering a career path that would include some sort of elderly care,” Kristi said. “She has learned their names and tells us all sorts of fun in-

teractions with them.”

“Senior Center Director Levoneia Ayers and LaWanda Mason, Activities Coordinator, have been amazing to work with Anna Clare and let her come when she is out of school,” Kristi said.

“Madison Senior Center is basically open the same schedule as school so she has spent her school holidays volunteering as much as possible.”

Anna Clare often handles the front desk, assists with events, makes goodie bags and is involved with fun ideas for the seniors.

Ayers refers to Anna Clare as “our amazing youth volunteer.”

The center staff has trusted Anna Clare with plenty of responsibilities: answering the telephone, handling challenges, taking initiative and talking to and collaborating with people across generations.

“Madison Senior Center allows me to get out of my comfort zone and get a real taste of a working environment,” Anna Clare said. “The center gives me a chance to get to know people who are not like me. The seniors who come there represent many nationalities and are a different generation.”

Anna Clare also likes hearing about the ‘seniors’ day. “What gets me there is the goal of the award but what keeps me there is the people I’m around when I’m there.”

“Banana pudding is widely regarded as one of the American South’s most prominent comfort foods,” said Major League Eating Emcee Sam Barclay. “But, if they are to succeed, eaters must stay focused on quantity, and refrain from enjoying the quality of Apple Lane Farm’s award-winning banana pudding.”

US Chess Federation awards Madison City Council member for work promoting chess

There has been an increase of alligator sightings lately around Lady Anne Lake off Zierdt Road in the Edgewater community. The recent sightings have prompted the Madison Police Department to urge residents to be careful and not to act against the gators themselves.

Experts: Alligators are here, but not many more than in past

By STAFF REPORTS news@themadisonrecord.com NORTH ALABAMA Reports of north Alabama alligator sightings are common, although a state official says the perception that alligator sightings are increasing probably has more to do with social media than with an increase in the gator population.

“Alligators have always been in Alabama. We were actually the first state to ban alligator hunting in 1938,” said Marianne Gauldin, a conservation outreach specialist with the Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division in Alabama. She said the American alligator is native to Alabama.

Drew Wirwa, deputy project leader of the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, said hot weather usually brings alligators into the open at the refuge during the summer months.

“It’s been consistent over the last few years, and it seems like this time

of year we’ll get reports of people seeing them, but there’s nothing unusual going on this year,” Wirwa said.

Gauldin said the increase in reports of alligator sightings in the state in the last 20 years can be attributed to social media. She said thousands of people will find out about a single sighting from shared online posts.

“In the past when someone saw an alligator, it was not as easily communicated with the general public as it is now,” Gauldin said.

“There are alligators reproducing and so more alligators do add to the population as time goes by. However, a portion of the perception that there are greater numbers of alligators is based in large part on the fact that we can share information so easily online.”

By STAFF REPORTS news@themadisonrecord.com MADISON – In selecting its 2022 annual award recipients, the US Chess Federation has noticed and praised a Madison resident’s work to promote the game.

US Chess has notified Ranae Bartlett that she will receive an award for her work in co-chairing a working group called “Chess in Education.” This working group included program leaders in chess from across the country and was named “Committee of The Year.”

Reporting to US Chess, the working group studied and recommended the best way to grow chess in schools. “I was asked to serve because of the work with the Madison City Chess League in growing chess in our community,” Bartlett said. Bartlett serves as MCCL’s Ex-

ecutive Director and is a member of the Madison City Council..

“Our group recommended that US Chess form a standing committee that will focus on this issue, hire dedicated staff, create professional development and resources for classroom teachers, and insure that chess is an inclusive activity for all kids,” Bartlett said.

The federation focused on identifying individuals and organizations who are advancing its mission “to empower people, enrich lives and enhance communities through chess,” according to its website, new.uschess.org.

“I am traveling to the US Open in August to accept the award. I share it with my co-chair John Galvin,” Bartlett said. The awards ceremony will be held in conjunction with the 123rd US Open and annual meetings of US Chess in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Galvin appeared in the movie, “Brooklyn Castle,” about a school team that wins national chess championships. An assistant principal, Galvin’s character sponsors the chess program at that school.

In addition, “Chess Life Magazine” will feature Bartlett and Galvin in an upcoming issue.

DECATUR - The Alabama Community College System (ACCS) Board of Trustees approved Chancellor Jimmy H. Baker’s recommendation to appoint Dr. Jimmy Hodges as President of Calhoun Community College. Dr. Hodges has served as Interim President at the College since June 2021.

“Madison, Morgan and Limestone counties are exploding in economic development, which means the residents and businesses there need to know now more than ever that a dynamic leader like Jimmy is at Calhoun Community College to ensure accessible, affordable and flexible education is right there to meet the needs of the community,” Baker said.

“Calhoun Community College leads our System in so many areas.

I’m excited to see how Jimmy will continue to strengthen direct ties to business and industry to maintain the college’s standing”, added Baker Hodges’ appointment marks one of two of the last permanent college presidential appointments at Alabama’s community and technical colleges, resulting in all 24 of the colleges having permanent presidents for the first time in many years.

Calhoun Community College is Alabama’s largest two-year institution offering more than 100 associate degree and certificates. The main campus is located just north of the Tennessee River in Decatur, the Alabama Center for the Arts campus is in downtown Decatur, and the Huntsville campus is located in Cummings Research Park across from the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.

Hodges’s 40 years of experience span higher education administration, manufacturing, and drafting and design technology. He began his career as a Machinist and served in various manufacturing industry roles for the better part of 20 years. In 2000, he utilized his experience to begin training the next generation as a Drafting Instructor at the Earnest Pruett Center of Technology. He then joined the faculty at Wallace State as Drafting Department Chairman and Instructor and was later promoted to Dean of Applied Technologies. Hodges earned a Diploma in Machine Shop Technology from Wallace State and an Associate of Applied Science in Machine Tool Technology from Calhoun.

Hodges holds a Bachelor of Science in Career and Technical Education and a Bachelor of Science in Management of Technology from Athens State University. He also earned a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership and a Doctor of Education in Higher Education Administration from the University of Alabama.

“For decades Calhoun Community College has been at the helm of workforce development in North Alabama, and I consider it a huge blessing to be able to lead such an excellent group of students, faculty and staff in continuing to enhance our current strategies and promote future growth,” commented Hodges.

Support needed for the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act From the ALABAMA PRESS ASSOCIATION

America’s free press is in crisis. Today, local journalism, which is necessary to maintaining an informed and active citizenry, is on life support.

Since the advent of the internet, Big Tech companies – namely Facebook and Google – have used their power to manipulate the online news industry for their own financial gain. They set the rules for how, where and when we see news content online and how much revenue is made, and the government has failed to step in.

By not negotiating with local and small news publishers on usage terms, and refusing to pay them fairly for their work, Big Tech has driven many local outlets out of business.

And as newsrooms have downsized or shuttered, Big Tech has filled the void with untrustworthy sources.

These platforms are built to elevate content that drive clicks – favoring extreme and outrageous misinformation.

Their revenue models are built to distribute divisive content, which could not

be more alarming in our highly fractured and partisan environment. They undervalue quality news content and, as a result, the information ecosystem has grown increasingly confusing and unhealthy.

For our democracy to function properly, the government has a duty to make sure that every industry is operating fairly, and that major economic players are conducting business responsibly. As the spread of dangerous misinformation online has permeated our culture, we have all seen just how critical quality journalism is to sustaining a civic society.

Elected officials now have a responsibility to reign in Big Tech – to restore fairness to the media industry and safeguard a pillar of our democracy.

Prevention is still the best solution

By BETH CHAPMAN MONTGOMERY - I’m naïve, but I’d like to think people on both sides of the abortion issue would like for there to never need to be another one – ever! We could agree that prevention is better than abortion. I would hope so.

Yet there’s a doctor in California who wants to establish a $20-million floating abortion clinic off the Alabama Gulf Coast to perform abortions in international waters because she claims it will then be “legal.”

If that fits your belief system (which it does not mine), sobeit, but let’s look at it in a way that everyone should be able to agree upon. Wouldn’t it be smarter and better to spend our time and resources on educating people in general – men and women – on protecting themselves from the need

for such procedures and clinics?

What both sides should be able to agree on is not whose right it is, or at what month abortion is right or wrong, whose choice it is, or when life begins (though we all could debate those things.) ¼ + ½ cup avocado oil, separated ¼ cup coconut aminos 2 tablespoons Sriracha 4 cloves garlic, crushed 1 bunch cilantro, chopped 1 cup wild Maine blueberries* 1 tablespoon honey, local preferred 1 cup fresh blueberries 1 cup sliced strawberries 8 oz. crumbled goat cheese 5 oz. spring greens Combine the zest and juice of one lime, ½ cup avocado oil, coconut aminos, Sriracha, garlic, and cilantro in a gallon-sized resealable bag.

Add steak and toss to coat. Seal and place in fridge for 4-24 hours, tossing occasionally. I place mine inside of a plastic grocery bag in case of leaks. Grill steak to desired

doneness, we prefer medium-rare.

Allow steak to rest while you make the dressing. To the vessel of a food processor or blender, add zest and juice of one lime, ¼ cup avocado oil, wild Maine blueberries, and honey.

Blend until pureed, but somewhat thick and transfer to a squeeze bottle. To assemble salad, create a bed of greens, top with thinly sliced steak, fresh berries, crumbled goat cheese, and a generous drizzle of dressing. Serve immediately. *We use Wyman’s frozen wild Maine blueberries as they are sweeter. If you can’t find them, substitute fresh. You may need to add a bit more honey in the dressing.

I have always thought of Isom’s as a Fall stand where I would grab pumpkins, mums, corn husks, and their deliciously popular apple cider slushies. However, I recently discovered that they also offer a variety of u-pick options which provide a great experience for the entire family. U-pick is exactly what it sounds like! Instead of grabbing a basket of

produce at the stand, you get to go out into the fields and pick yourself.

These include blackberries, flowers, apples, grape picking and more. How wonderful is it for our children to know exactly where their food comes from?! In addition to their u-pick seasons, Isom’s sells produce from April to Fall. Their produce stand is open 7 days a week from 8 to 5 with an ever changing inventory of fresh and local jellies, honey, melons, and tomatoes just to name a few.

A few weekends ago, we packed up the cooler with water and buckled our kids in their car seats for a trip to the Isom’s Orchard sunflower fields. Groove to perform at Madison’s “Concerts in the Park” July 21

By STAFF REPORTS news@themadisonrecord.com MADISON – The city’s tradition of summertime evenings with free music returns July 21 with the next installment of “Concerts in the Park”.

The concerts are held at the revamped Home Place Park at 100 Shorter St., located just south of downtown Madison and west of

Madison City Schools Stadium. The City of Madison renovated Home Place Park with amphitheater seating and other considerations for outdoor performances.

A parallel parking bay with electrical hookups south of Shorter Street will accommodate food trucks.

Admission is free for the concerts, which start at 6 p.m. on Thursdays.

The 2022 schedule includes Groove on July 21; and The Zooks on Aug. 18.

Audience members can bring their own lawn chairs. Vendors will sell food and drinks.

Wirwa said if temperatures keep increasing every summer, more alligators could migrate into north Alabama.

“I believe climate change has a lot to do with animals that have historically been farther south moving up (into north Alabama),” Wirwa said.

“The higher densities of alligators are in the coastal marshes, around natural lakes, rivers, wetlands and some reservoirs,” Gauldin said.

“They may thrive (in north Alabama), but they’re not going to be reproducing as prolifically as they do in the southern part of the state.

The southern part of the state has a much greater number of alligators than the northern part of the state.”

Alligators have been sighted in north Alabama for decades, a fact some biologists attribute to the fact that baby alligators purchased in Florida were later released here.

Those numbers increased, ac-

cording to published news reports, in the summer of 1979 when the U.S. Department of Interior transplanted alligators from southern Louisiana to North Alabama. It was an attempt to curtail the beaver population and to give the threatened species a safe haven.

Wirwa said people who see an alligator should keep their distance and not feed them. Gauldin said feeding alligators was illegal.

“If people entice alligators, for example, feeding them … that can create a dangerous situation because then you have an alligator that begins to approach people because they associate human activity with food,” Gauldin said.

HARVEST - The pins continue to fall in rapid-fire fashion and the accolades progressively pile up for members of the Sparkman High bowling team. Four members have been chosen as All-State bowlers for their outstanding play in youth leagues and four were selected for the Huntsville U.S. Bowling Conference Hall of Fame.

ond-Team members include Kaity Alexander and Joey Collier. Rising Sparkman senior Angela Webber was part of the All-State First-Team selections.

Meanwhile, the Huntsville U.S. Bowling Conference (HUSBC) selected its 2022 class for the Youth Hall of Fame and that list includes Lindsey, Webber and Collier, along with rising senior Sparkman team member Alfonso Carrington III. “I went through lots of practice time to improve my game 19 pins on my average from a year ago as part of the Saturday morning Rebels League at

Pin Palace in Huntsville,” said Lindsey, who was a six-year starter for Sparkman and helped lead the Lady Senators to two consecutive AHSAA State Championships in 2021 and 2022. She also signed a bowling scholarship with the University of Pikeville of Kentucky. “The Rebels League is made up of 31 weeks of play and included 33 bowlers.”

Lindsey, with a 209 average, was No. 1 among the All-State squad while Webber was No. 4 among the four members who were selected with her 176 average as part of the Saturday youth league at the Madison See BOWLING Page 2B

MADISON DOLPHINS SWIM TEAMS - Members of the Madison Dolphins Swim Team celebrate their winning the Alabama Recreation and Parks Association District 2 Championships held in Boaz. The Dolphins won both the boys and girls divisions and will now send 104 swimmers and 15 divers to the ARPA State Meet set for July 21-23 in Opelika. Longtime head coach Gayle Marbury led a group of assistant coaches during the season. Those coaches included: Kelly Davis, Logan Black, Abby Davies, Rebecca King, Hannah Krings, Heather McAdams and Sabrina Morgavi. With the help of the parents, volunteers and the Madison Recreation Department at Dublin Memorial Park, many of the Dolphins improved immensely during the season and will now reap the benefits of their hard work with a splendid effort at the State Meet.

HUNTSVILLE – Professional soccer is coming to Huntsville’s Joe Davis Stadium. Mayor Tommy Battle announced a partnership with the Nashville Soccer Club (SC) to launch its next MLS NEXT Pro team in Huntsville. The team will begin competition in the 2023 MLS NEXT Pro season.

“Soccer has consistently been one of the most popular and fastest-growing sports in our region,” said Mayor Battle. “When the City decided to renovate Joe Davis Stadium and convert its playing field to a multiuse field, we hoped pro soccer would find a way here.

Today, we are proud to deliver this exciting sports amenity to our community.”

The inaugural season of MLS NEXT Pro, a new professional men’s soccer league, began in March with participation from 21 clubs. The league is committed to driving a new era of North American soccer by offering fresh opportunities to players, coaches, referees and sports business professionals.

“When we started building our MLS team in Nashville, we talked a lot about the key ingredients that made Nashville a perfect soccer city: great energy, strong business community and a real civic pride,” said Nashville SC CEO Ian Ayre.

“It’s quite obvious in spending time in Huntsville that the same raw ingredients exist here. We could not be more excited about bringing an MLS NEXT Pro team to Huntsville and the amazing stadium project.”

The City will present an agreement with the pro soccer club to City Council for approval at its July 14 regular meeting. The contract will allow the City to lease the stadium to NSH NEXTCO LLC, which will operate the facility year-round.

NSH NEXTCO will establish a professional soccer club affiliated with the Nashville Soccer Club, a Major League Soccer Club. The Huntsville team will compete in the newly formed MLS Next Pro league.

Nashville SC and the City of Huntsville will announce more information about the team’s identity, brand and schedule in the coming months.

The renovation of Joe Davis Stadium, located in John Hunt Park at 3125 Leeman Ferry Road, Huntsville, is scheduled to be complete in May 2023.

When it opens, the 6,000-seat facility will accommodate other groups, including Huntsville City Schools football games on Friday nights. Its multiuse fields will also be available for ultimate frisbee, rugby and lacrosse, and other events like concerts and religious services.

MADISON - Bryce Teodosio knew he hit it well. Watching Montgomery Biscuits right fielder Grant Witherspoon move back on the ball, Teodosio thought he had his ninth home run of the season to give the Trash Pandas a lead.

But on Sunday, June 19 in a tie game with a chance to clinch a playoff spot for the Rocket City Trash Pandas, the ball hit off the right field fence at Toyota Field. As the ball settled in right field, Teodosio turned on the jets.

Circling the bases as fast as he could for a first-place Double-A team is a long way away from where Teodosio was just a year ago, wrapping up his college career for Clemson. The goal of playing professional baseball was also put on hold last summer, if only for a brief moment. Teodosio went unselected in the 20 rounds of the first-year player draft, waiting on a team to call to sign him as a free agent.

“I was really hoping to get drafted and expecting to get drafted.

Not necessarily in a high round but I was expecting to at least get picked,” Teodosio said. “When I didn’t get drafted, it was one of the most depressing times I’ve ever had because I’d worked for it my whole life. But three or four days after the draft the Angels called and I took no hesitation to sign with them.”

From there, Teodosio was off to Arizona and then to Low-A Inland Empire in San Bernardino, California to begin his professional career. Life on the west coast was a long way from South Carolina, where he grew up and attended Clemson just a few miles from his hometown. At that moment, the biggest adjustment came off the

The stint at Inland Empire was brief but successful, as Teodosio hit .279 in 17 games to get his first taste of Minor League Baseball.

Heading into the 2022 season, the taste quickly became reality when he got to play in a few Cactus League games for the Angels during Major League Spring Training. In about nine months, he went from college athlete to teammates with some of the best players in the game, including Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani.

“Just being in the dugout with those big time guys, it was shocking and surreal to me,” he said. “I watched those guys my whole life and I looked up to them. It was cool to see them on their field doing their thing and being in the dugout with them was surreal.”

When it came time for the regular season to begin, Teodosio thought there was a chance he could return to Inland Empire, maybe go to High-A Tri-City to start his first full season. Instead, he impressed enough to earn a spot on the Trash Pandas roster, moving up the ranks with many teammates that began their career s in 2021. It was a moment to savor for Teodosio.

“I was thrilled to hear that news.

Slightly shocked to be going up to Double-A but not too surprised because I know what my skillset is and I know I belong here,” he recalled. “I was blessed in that moment to be closer to the east coast to allow my family to see me play and to be able to play for such a great affiliate.”

Teodosio’s speed has been an asset in the Rocket City lineup. Cristina Byrne-Sternberg/Rocket City Trash Pandas Teodosio has emerged as a mainstay in the Trash Pandas lineup,

providing stellar defense and the occasional home run while his 16 stolen bases rank second on the team. Which brings him back to June 19, as the Trash Pandas needed a win over Montgomery to clinch the first-half North Division title on their home field.

With the ball rolling in right field, Teodosio was off to the races, as he explains.

“I got it and took a good swing. I thought I hit it out, and I kept seeing the outfielder go back and further back. He jumped and it hit the top of the wall. After that, I kind of blacked out and started running as hard as I could,” Teodosio said. “I was turning past second and I saw Andy not stopping me. I was getting closer to third and I saw that he was sending me and I thought, ‘Uh oh, here it goes.’ I’ve had this happen before with a few insidethe-park home runs in my life. The adrenaline started kicking in, I almost tripped going around third. I slid into home and it was a really special moment. The crowd was as electric as it could get.”

Teodosio threw his helmet in celebration of the first inside-thepark home run in Rocket City history. The run put the Trash Pandas ahead 2-1 in a game they would win 7-2 to clinch the first playoff spot in franchise history. It was a moment that will go down in Trash Pandas lore.

“That’s one of the most memorable ones I’ll ever have in my career to be honest with you,” he said. “To put us up to send us to the playoffs after no Angels minor league team has been to the playoffs in a few years, it’s really cool for me.”

With the playoffs already clinched, Teodosio and the Trash Pandas will look to keep riding the positive momentum into the second half of the season.

between my average and others who were selected,” said Webber, who is expected to be the anchor bowler for the Senators in the upcoming school season, which kicks off in October. “I have worked on my game the last two years and I consider my style as smooth as I use a strong hook in comparison to others.”

Webber, who carries a 4.0 grade point average into her senior year and holds a third degree black belt in Taekwondo, stands 5-foot-9 and utilizes her height in making a strong motion while on the lanes.

She also works at the Madison Bowling Center. Her older sister, Jenna, was the Class 7A State Champion two years ago while leading the Lady Senators to a state title. Meanwhile, Lindsey will start college in mid-August and has gone through a whirlwind

of a schedule bowling in numerous tournaments including part of the Tennessee Road to Gold Tournaments where she has won several times. She feels she has succeeded in bowling due to the fact she receives expert coaching from both of her parents who also bowl.

Lindsey’s accomplishments include winning the President’s Award in Alabama earning a scholarship for her efforts to be a better athlete.

The Second-Team selections featured Alexander who carries a 174 average and Collier who flexes his talent to a tune of 201 per game.

The HUSBC Youth Hall of Fame selections came from the board of the local organization who looked for outstanding bowlers who also are outstanding youth and in good-standing with the community.

“The Board looked at sportsmanship, placements in tournaments and scoring average,” added Webber, who was surprised when she was selected as one of the newest members of the Youth Hall of Fame. “I also bowl as part of the Thursday night Generation Gap League.”

Webber is undecided about a possible college to attend and would love nothing better than choose a college that features a bowling team. She added, “If I come across an opportunity to attend college that does not have a bowling program I’ll have to take it.”

The upcoming new year of school will give both the boys and girls teams at Sparkman the opportunity to carry the winning banner as two-time defending State Champions with an array of talent returning for the 2022-2023 season.

Her canvas is in the kitchen and her unique creations take many forms. From her heirloom recipes to the wooden utensils she carves by hand, Lindsey has become a master at her art - bringing the kitchen and dining room back into focus as the centerpiece of a loving home. Even the photographs she takes to display her many creations are very artistic. To top it all off, this wife and mother of two young children, has a desire to use her talents to bring an extra helping of healthy joy into the lives of others.

Lindsey has deep roots in Appalachia, being from West Virginia. She and her family made their way to Madison in 2020, bringing with her the art of crafting utensils from wood. Coupled with a love for cooking, Lindsey has now made a business out of her passion, which we will cover later in the story. This has extended into another creation of Lindsey’s, her “Front Porch Farm Stand”.

Lindsey conceptualized the Front Porch Farm Stand as a gathering place for people and provisions.

“I thought the stand would be a great way to meet my neighbors and be a winwin for all of us,” Boothe said.

“I started with ‘rules’ of the ‘Little Free Library’ stands but wanted it more personal. I realized not everyone gardens, but everyone has something to offer,” Boothe said. “As long as it’s something you’d find at a typical farm stand, you’re welcome to bring it by.”

However, Americans have lost that way of life “with our increasingly busy schedules and obsession with technology. I’m hoping to simply bring that back,” Boothe said. A farm stand also can reduce wasted food by sharing with

others.

Boothe recommends sharing jellies and jams, eggs, teas, herbs, cookies, pastries, and plants. Her farm stand has a recipe box for card swaps, along with Mason jars with water for cut flowers.

By GREGG PARKER gregg@themadisonrecord.com MONTGOMERY – The spotlight shone on Kelsey Cooper in Montgomery recently for receiving the celebrated Milken Educator Award, which she accepted earlier this year in a surprise presentation at Discovery Middle School.

In the state capital, the Alabama State Board of Education honored Cooper in a congratulatory resolution in a special ceremony. To perpetuate her achievement, Cooper accepted a translucent statuette from State Superintendent of Education Dr. Eric Mackey and District 8 representative with the State Board of Education Dr. Wayne Reyolds. Reyolds’ district includes Madison City Schools.

Nicknamed the “Oscars of Teaching,” Milken Educator Awards celebrate the American teaching profession and serve to inspire young, dedicated people to join it.

Only 60 educators nationwide were awarded Milkens during this 20212022 school year.

“Providing students with both real-world and group-oriented learning experiences has been shown to be an effective classroom tool.

Milken Educator Kelsey Cooper has developed a dynamic learning environment within her local school system, which promotes K-12 mathematics knowledge, independent student thinking and advanced problem-solving,” Mackey said when he visited Discovery with the award.

“Kelly Cooper’s commitment to furthering student achievement using innovative technology and best-practice classroom instruction is truly an outstanding example of educational leadership,” Mackey said.

In her math classroom and for everyone to effectively teach, Cooper believes a teacher must “get to

know your kids. Set expectations and have procedures in place so that students know those expectations.”

Furthermore, she is confident that all students can learn. However, “students need support and an adult in their corner, and their future is theirs to go get,” Cooper said.

“Consequences are needed to learn and grow, but grace in certain situations can teach us more than consequences in the end.”

Cooper attended Calhoun Community College and then earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, minor in education at Athens State University. In 2021, she received a master’s degree in instructional leadership from the University of West Alabama.

In other honors, Cooper was selected “2021 Teacher of the Year” at Discovery. She is a National Board Certified Teacher. Cooper teaches math 8 accelerated, AVID and algebra 2 with trigonometry. She sponsors Fellowship of Christian Athletes and First Priority.

Madison City Schools recently announced their elections for teacher and staff of the year awards. Over the next few weeks, The Record will spotlight each one leading up to the overall teacher and staff selection in August.

By GREGG PARKER gregg@themadisonrecord.com MADISON – Liberty Middle School is Latoya Whitehorn’s first ‘home school.’ For the past four years, she has valued Liberty as an extension of family. Whitehorn is “Staff Member of the Year” at Liberty.

“I have been blessed to work with phenomenal teachers and staff at Liberty,” Whitehorn said. “Even when days are a little tough, I am reminded why I do what I do. Our teachers and students give me the drive to do what I do each day.”

For seven years before moving to Madison, Whitehorn worked for Johnson City Schools in Johnson City, Tenn. She started substitute teaching for Madison City Schools in fall 2017. About one year later, she assumed the role of permanent sub (substitute teacher) at Liberty.

Previously, Whitehorn worked as a substitute teacher at Horizon and

Mill Creek elementary schools. However, she has strong feeling of ‘home’ for Liberty.

In considering her teaching philosophy, Whitehorn is “a big believer in teamwork. I apply the phrase first coined by Aristotle daily, ‘A whole is better than the sum of its parts.’”

“I do not consider myself to be strict; however, I do like structure with a spoonful of creativity and spunk,” Whitehorn said. “The students and teachers know that they can be themselves around me, and that really makes my day.”

Whitehorn equates success with taking the needed steps to confirm that her mental health is a priority.

“My success was achieved with the help of my Liberty team, self-recognition and self-care. I have a wonderful team at Liberty Middle School that has encouraged me every step of the way and reminded me of my goals,” she said.

“I am able to recognize these signs

in our children and point them in the right direction for help,” Whitehorn said. “Knowing that I have people in my corner pushes me to stand and deliver. I am overjoyed with the mental health awareness that MCS provides for our students, employees and the parents of Madison.”

Whitehorn graduated with a bachelor’s degree from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City.

Her husband Jeffrey works for MDA. “We have two wonderful children, Rhianna and Julius. My daughter attends James Clemens High School, and my son attends Mill Creek Elementary School,” Whitehorn said.

When she has a chance to relax, Latoya enjoys spending time with her family, watching movies, dancing, creating art and “listening to music — especially anything from the 1970s and 1980s and jazz music on my record player. Music is good for the soul!” she said.

Mary really did have a little lamb

Everyone knows the nursery rhyme “Mary Had A Little Lamb,” but you probably didn’t know this was based on true story. Her name was Mary Sawyer. She was an 11-year-old girl and lived in Boston and one day was followed to school by her pet lamb. In the late 1860s, she helped raise money for an old church by selling wool from the lamb.

The thing is the Bible is for real and has solutions to life’s issues and problems. Many naysayers try to discredit it saying it is not for today

but is a book of ancient stories. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Satan does a dandy job spreading lies, deception, and twisting scripture to make the Bible sound like a book of fables and fairy tales. Everyone needs a Bible. I can recommend some good ones to you. No special degree is required to pick it up and no title. It is for everyone. Start reading in the book of John and you can easily download the You Version Bible App for free from the App Store.

PRAYER: Lord my heart aches for people who hate the word and would sooner see it burned than to open it up. It seems scary to others. I pray that anyone reading today who does not understand or know their Bible pursues it and a relationship with you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

“True Tales” of Gladys True - Part 25 The following is a continuation of excerpts from the book, “My Life from Wagons to Rockets” by Gladys McFarlen True. It chronicles her life while living in Madison.

By JOHN P. RANKIN Madison Historian {Gladys’ book continues:} I remember Pud enjoyed the recliners.

On the morning that John Glenn made that first journey into space, I went to the store. Everybody was home watching their televisions, so we did not have any customers.

We sat down in those recliners, and watched John Glenn go up. Pud said, “The world will never be the same.”

And he was right. We are so close to where they build those rockets and all this stuff that goes on out there.

It has been there so long we do not pay any attention to it. What amazes me this very week as I recall these things is that they took up several things of ashes and dropped them from a rocket into the ocean. I have seen so many things happen that amaze me, but that was the one I have seen most recently.

We stayed in the store the second time three or four years. Pop was ready to come home that time. So, we sold it again, to a cousin. James Calvin Lewter was a cousin to the one we sold it to first. They had both worked for us as kids. James Calvin has spent the rest of his life working.

He was the manager of Winn-Dixie for many years. These were both fine young men, but they did not like staying at the store. The store has changed hands, and many things have been in that location. The last thing in there was a baseball card shop. The boy stayed there for several years so he must have made a pretty good living.

We wound up staying in the furniture business two or three years.

When that stuff did not move right away like our groceries moved, Pop got anxious. The refrigerators were about the only things that would sell fast. If he could not sell a customer a new refrigerator, he would sell them an old one. Guess who’s the old one was? It was mine. I have cleaned more refrigerators than any housewife I know. I cleaned my refrigerator, then I cleaned the new one.

Sometimes I would not have had those second-hand refrigerators for over two months before he sold them again. He just could not stand it, so we finally got out of the refrigerator business. We also got rid of all that furniture, and closed the wall.

I would like to have had an antique store. Pud did not care much about old things unless it was something he remembered at his mother’s house. It would have bothered him for antiques to stand around for a long, long time like they do. So when we sold the store that second time, he came home and his health was bad. He was not as happy as I wish he could have been because he did not feel good, but he had some good years left.

He spent a good bit of time in his recliner watching television. The best Father’s Day gift you all ever gave him was the cable so he could get sports. If I was doing something else like sewing in another room, he pulled off his hearing aid and just watched sports. He wanted me to watch with him a lot so he could discuss the players. All the players that I remember discussing with him are just about gone. Some of them are announcers now, and some are get-

I was a captive audience for many years.

I miss reading, but I still do a lot of things. I am still in the Garden Club. I worked hard in the Historical Society. I go to church. I do not work at church anymore, and I do not belong to the Missionary Society or anything. I am just a bench-warmer. But the preacher told me you have to have those, too. It took me almost ten years to get the chimes in the church in memory of Pud and a dear friend, Mrs. McDonald. Her family and friends helped. We had the money there a long time before we could get the chimes because I did not know how to get chimes for the church. But we got them in. They are here, and we are enjoying them.

They were in for Easter 1997.

A fact I have not mentioned that affected our lives was that Pud was hard-of-hearing. He quit going to the movies when they started selling popcorn because he could not hear the movie for people eating popcorn. In church the volume of the organ echoed in his hearing aids.

Because of the discomfort, he attended evening service when only the piano was used. We got the idea of the chimes since we knew he would have enjoyed the sounds of the bell tower music in the open air with no reverberation, no echo. Pud did not complain, and in fact he would sometimes turn the hearing aids off when he did not want to hear something.

But it did bother him later when he could not always understand the grandchildren.

Beverly told me that the memory from childhood that hurts her the most is the time Pud went to Memphis for an operation to restore his hearing. He made plans to fly there; and Maggie, Beverly, and I were so proud to be entrusted with the store for a few days. Nobody in our family, or really even anyone we knew, flew anywhere. We took Pud to the airport and he was so excited and happy. But when he got to Memphis, the doctors said there had been a mistake and they could not help him. He called to tell us. We were all so upset.

He came back the next day, acting like it did not matter, and went back to work as usual. We were all so disappointed for him, to see the end of his hopes, and still no complaining.

Wherever he is now, I am sure that he can hear, and I know that I also will be able to see again.

We were a year late getting television. We kept seeing these small antennas on houses, and then we saw antennas on a tower-like mast that

looked like you could climb. They looked very imposing, but they really were not made sturdy enough to climb. They did not detract from your house at all, we thought. We waited to get that kind of antenna.

We had the first television on the street.

At this time Lucy and Ricky were really popular on TV. I know that some of the early years before television got too popular, Lucy was pregnant with little Ricky. Lucy and Desi were on Monday night. The neighbors would come sit on the floor and watch when we first got it.

Of course, in just a little while, I am talking about in just a few months, everybody had one. But television was just really something new and something we really enjoyed.

The first spring that we had television Pud closed the store, and we rushed home to see the Kentucky Derby. He went to the bathroom, and when he got back it was over. He was so mad. Of course, the Kentucky Derby pre-show and everything went on all day, but the actual race just took a few minutes. He missed it, but I saw it. We just went on back to the store.

Television was a boon for us. Our firstborn, Eleanor Ann, (“Sissie”) was in high school and had boyfriends, so dates were coming along.

As parents we stayed in the room with our daughter and her date and a small child {Beverly, our youngest} for just a few minutes, then we needed to get out. We had built a small house, and we had to come back in the bedroom and listen to the radio. My husband said one night, “I can’t even go to the bathroom without them knowing that somebody is in there. They can hear us flush the toilet, and we’re sitting back here listening to a radio when we have a TV. We’re just going to add some rooms to the house.”

So, we extended the house twenty feet. Pud did not put the extra bathroom where I wanted it. But that was strictly his bathroom. None of us ever bothered it. He enjoyed it more than any other possession he ever had, because there were three of us females, and there was just one of him. We enjoyed the extra rooms -- a den, a bedroom, and a bathroom.

We were early with the den. A lot of people did not have dens for a while.

They did like we did, going back to sit in the bedroom while the girls used the living room. These were changes that came about. We just accepted them, and nobody thought much about it. We paid as much for the back addition as for the whole front of the house.

You will pay $2 a stem for sunflowers and $1 for zinnias. We filled a bucket and paid around $20.

Last year’s u-pick flower season ended the week of August 16th, so you have just a few more weekends to experience this fun adventure.

What great memories and a wonderful new family tradition that I will look forward to for years to come. “I’ll put something special out every ‘Farm Stand Friday,’” she said.

People have no limits on how much to take but stands operate best when people take only as much as they give.

A stand works on the honor system. “There will always be miscreants, but the good always prevails,” Boothe said. “(Usually), we’re talking ‘small tomatoes’ here. If someone takes all of those, I assume they have food insecurity. With produce, we’re hoping for a quick turnaround anyways to prevent waste.”

Feedback about the Front Porch Farm Stand has been totally positive. “I’ve had lovely cottage floral arrangements, fresh tomatoes, artisan teas and many other things. I’ve received lots of messages of support.

I’m hoping those turn into additional stands,” Boothe said.

Her husband Brandon works as engineer. Lindsey owns Alabama Treenware and cares for their two youngsters. “My husband is the most supportive person of all of my ‘antics,’” Lindsey said. “Our little guys love to help me carry things out and see what people leave.”

Her stand is open 24/7, but she does prefer daytime visits.

In addition to the Front Porch Farm Stand, Boothe officially launched Alabama Treenware in April of this year after already creating a bit of a social media buzz over her products.

What started as a hobby carving spoons from wood has emerged as a business venture for Boothe.

Boothe grew up in West Virginia and said while there she was looking for a new hobby, and became interested in wood carving, notably making spoons and other utensils from wood. “I love cooking and have always loved making things with my hands,” she explained. “I am the type that says I am not going to buy it when I can make it.”

She did some research on the internet and ended up reaching out to nationally acclaimed folk artist Stan Jennings, who had founded Allegheny Treenware. “It just so happened that he only lived about 45 minutes from me, so I called and asked if he would teach me.”

He agreed to teach Boothe the craft and she picked it up with the determination and creativity of a budding

artist. “He was very patient with me and gave me his first spoon carving gouge to take home and practice,” she said.

When Boothe and her family relocated to Madison, Boothe continued to make her wooden creations. “I carved a few spoons, but never did anything with it,” she said.

“I was building outdoor mud kitchens for kids and ended breaking my hand on a saw in December 2020,” Boothe said. “I ended up crushing it with some wood I was working on. After that, I couldn’t work with the big lumber for a while, so I started working on making small wood objects just to help rehabilitate my hand.”

One day someone sent Boothe a message and asked if she could make them a wooden spoon. “I told them that I really did know how to make wooden utensils, for real,” she recalled. “So I made her a couple of them and soon Instagram found out about it and suddenly I had several people wanting wooden utensils.”

As word got out about the quality and uniqueness of her products, she wanted to start a business. However, getting a business license working out of her home became difficult, and it had to be put on hold until Boothe and her husband could purchase the home they were renting off County Line Road.

After finally purchasing the home, Boothe said she and her family were able to settle and she could go full steam ahead with the business. And Alabama Treenware was born.

Posting photos of her goods on social media, and her initial customers doing so as well has helped drum up business for Boothe.

Boothe began “marketing” her products via social media and got some attention from locals who wanted to purchase her products. As her customers started posting her work, business started rolling in.

“I woke up one morning with tons of orders, and it was in large part because a local jam maker with thousands of Facebook followers posted pics of the spoons they’d gotten from me.’”

Boothe started writing blog entries about her work, her recipes and her experiences with woodworking as she was getting into her hobby, and was urged by friends to publish her writing, which led to her book, “Provisions: Food, Drink, and Tools for Your Table”, which includes old

family recipes along with photos of and some commentary on her wood products.

Of course, being able to share with the world her hobby and passion for her work through her writing also helped spark her business, which continues to grow.

Boothe carves all of her products from local repurposed wood. She said she gets a significant amount of her wood from friends or neighbors who will contact her about a fallen tree in their yard or the like, or she will sometimes see a fallen tree while driving around and arrange to pick it up.

She says her utensils are “organic by nature and heirloom by choice.”

She teaches classes at Burritt on the Mountain on woodworking and has developed quite a following her in North Alabama. And she said she has found that growing her network has also grown a unique community.

“I thought I was building a spoon business, but I’ve actually built a community of like-minded folks who I have come to enjoy and who all support each other.”
