John and Amy Jupin faced two life-changing milestones when they bought their home in Heritage Provence.

“We decided to purchase the house when it was about 95 percent finished, and we had our first newborn baby. It was a whirlwind,” Amy said. “We knew Madison was on the verge of another expansion, and we were looking for a family-friendly neighborhood to start our family. We loved the location, cul-de-sac and layout.”

With 2,800 square feet, the five-bedroom, three-bath home features a large Southern front porch. The Jupins added a screened back porch with deck. The two-story brick house has traditional design with white trim, accented in gray and black.

“We fell hard for the cul-de-sac, front porch and traditional curb appeal,” Amy said. John likes the vaulted, two-story living room.

“When we moved in with a tiny 3-month-old baby, we thought, ‘How will we ever fill this house up?’ Now, we have five children,” Amy said.

Decorating is a dual approach, with Amy visualizing ideas and John doing the work. “He’s a reluctant handyman, but projects we’ve worked on together have made the most impact,” she said.

John restyled the fireplace, changing tile and creating a focal point above with shiplap. He added molding and white paint for architectural interest.

The Jupins prefer light, bright, comfortable living spaces in coastal/beachy style with a hint of farmhouse. Amy always chooses “classic, weathered-and-worn, white and comfy” pieces – “nothing is frilly or fancy.”

“It’s most definitely a summer house – an eclectic mix of casual, distressed furniture and curated vintage pieces mixed with washable slipcovered furniture,” she said.

“I often decorate with driftwood, seashells,

starfish, and collect ironstone china, wicker-covered wine bottles, blue glass, vintage seascapes – even bird nests.”

The open floorplan lets the kitchen and living room flow directly into each other. The living room, kitchen, back porch and back yard are the Jupins’ favorite spaces.

“We are lovers of light,” Amy said. “The sun rises on the back of our home, where the living room and kitchen are. Our house is flooded with the most glorious sunshine in the mornings.”

The kitchen, Amy said, “breathed a sigh of relief when we painted the honey wood cabinetry a bright white, added a farmhouse sink and changed out lighting fixtures.”

During warmer months, the back door stays open to the screened porch. “It becomes our second living room,” Amy said.

Most of the year, the family lives on that porch with “a comfy outdoor sofa and TV. John and our teenage boys love to watch

football and hoot and holler it up.” Amy enjoys her morning coffee on the back porch. “Our little one loves to watch the birds and bunnies, too. John built a playhouse, a very special place for our littlest.

I love how it’s tucked into the trees and

feels like a hideaway place for her imagination to wander.”

The Jupins enjoy yard work, typically planting a small garden to harvest tomatoes, peppers and basil. Hydrangeas, roses and lilies grace the landscape.

Both engineers, John and Amy work on Redstone Arsenal. He works with helicopters, and she works with space experiments.

Their children are Joshua, 16, a junior at James Clemens High School; Michael, 16, adopted from Ukraine in 2014 and a Jets sophomore; Anna, 14, Jets freshman; Benjamin, 11, fifth-grader at Columbia Elementary School; and 18-month-old Maggie Rae. John grew up in Pennsylvania, while Amy hails from New Jersey. They met at Pennsylvania State University, moved to Huntsville for jobs in 1998 and settled in Madison in 2002. “We’ve been here ever since,” said Amy, “and love it here.”

The heart and soul of small-town athletics are the high school teams. Friday night football, Christmas basketball tournaments and spring baseball are all events that can have a lasting impact on a community. Most people know how hard student-athletes train during the season, but what do these competitors do to stay sharp and improve in the offseason?

For girls basketball, travel ball during the spring and summer months is without a doubt the best option – and there is perhaps no better organization than the Alabama Southern Starz. Many people might think AAU or travel basketball is too time consuming or

simply not worth it, but according to program director Doug Bush, the results speak for themselves.

“I think you just have to look at some of the players who have come through our program,” Bush said.

“AAU basketball for girls is completely different than boys. There are no shoe deals. A lot of times these girls are out here competing for scholarships or to try to get better for the next level. Our program is not just trying to teach basketball lessons, but also life lessons.”

Southern Starz – which was founded in 2000 – currently fields some of the top competitors in

Madison and Morgan counties, who compete all over the Southeast region with the best in the sport.

The idea is not to just grab players once it is clear they are good. Bush said Southern Starz encourages young girls to join the program in their early days of learning basketball.

“You look at some of the best that we have had, and most all of them were with us for multiple years,” Bush added. “I went back and did the math, and the average amount of time that our players spend with us is 5.8 years. It’s not like we are just getting 11th-graders every year and piecing a team together. These girls all play with each other from a very young age.”

Bush is no stranger to girls basketball. Having three daughters – all of whom showed interest in basketball at a young age – Bush found out about the Alabama Southern Starz in 2001 when his oldest daughter was encouraged to join the program and be a member of the initial graduating class.

Being the businessman and visionary that he is, Bush saw the potential and the benefits of growing the program into what it is today. Now players such as Shakayla Thomas – a Florida State graduate who is expected to be a first-round draft pick in the WNBA – got their start in competitive basketball with the Southern Starz.

“You look at players like Shakayla, who was a McDonald’s All-American coming out of high school and who was selected as Miss Basketball in Alabama, and you know we are getting great talent

and helping them develop their skills on and off the court,” Bush said. “The amount of talent in the Morgan and Madison county areas is incredible. We get players from all over the South, and we combine them with that local talent to field one of the top teams in the country.”

If there is one thing that is clear, it is that Alabama Southern Starz has impacted north Alabama girls basketball for the better. Forty different athletes associated with the Southern Starz competed in this year’s regional and state final championships.

In addition, eight of the 12 seniors competing for Alabama in the Alabama vs. Mississippi All-Star Game were members of the organization.

Travel basketball is elite in this area, and thanks to some help from the Starz, the future of girls basketball is very bright.

Local athletes who are current members of the Alabama Southern Starz include eighth-grader Masyn Marchbanks of Hartselle; freshmen Jenna Walker of Priceville, Halia Morris of Madison Academy, Makiyah Parker of James Clemens and Saniah Parker of Jemison; sophomores Emily Bowman of Huntsville, Destinee McGhee of Madison Academy, Brianna Moore of Grissom, Alaina Taylor of Athens and Katie Jones of Decatur Heritage; and juniors Moriah Taylor of Hartselle Jasmine Grace of Madison Academy, Ariana Powe of Grissom, Kathleen Wheeler of Priceville McCarley Northway of Brewer and Jolee Cole of Danville.

Madison high schools rank high on ‘Best in America’ list Madison City Schools landed both high schools in the U.S. News and World Report’s rankings of the Best High Schools in America. Bob Jones and James Clemens placed in the top 10 in Alabama. Madison is the only district to have more than one high school in the state's top 10 that is not a magnet.

Districtwide, 22 percent of the BJ and JC graduating classes (204) scored a 30 or higher on their ACT. A total of eight (four from each high school) scored a perfect 36.

Both Bob Jones and James Clemens high schools made the top 3 percent of high schools nationwide in the U.S. News and World Report ranking of best high schools in America. Among Alabama high schools, Bob Jones ranked 4 and James Clemens 7.

Giving was also prevalent in the district, as evidenced by the annual St. Jude campaigns, United Way pledges, food drives, the give-back homecoming floats at JC and JC being Alabama’s top giver in the Make-A-Wish foundation.

These accolades at the high schools wouldn’t be possible without strong feeder schools. Madison City was one of only two school districts out of 137 statewide to have every single school receive an A on the state-issued report cards.

Among its many assets, Madison now has a 21st-century library that houses more than books.

The library is opening minds to new interests and learning.

The new building combines both a library and a community center, according to branch manager Sarah Sledge. The facility “gives our patrons a place to connect with one another in person and the world at large through technology over shared interests.”

“Whether it’s work related, reading for pleasure, attending an informational presentation or discovering a new pursuit, the library is a place where people can find connections and network for lifelong learning,” Sledge added. “Residents of Madison can find their community at the library.”

With Madison’s proliferation of young families, the Children’s Area welcomes a high number of visitors every day. The library’s new department for children offers a separate program room for

storytime and other youth events. Sunny and spacious are fitting adjectives for the Children’s Area.

“The children’s department is full of natural light with open ceilings, cheerful colors and lots of comfortable seating throughout,” Sledge said. “A bright, interactive geometric neighborhood provides a primary focus in our interactive area, complete with a puppet theater, Author Corner and other interactive manipulatives and puzzles.”

Customized shelving for children’s books “makes browsing for a great book accessible for even the youngest readers,” Sledge said.

Library officials heard a resounding request for one improvement to the former building: more meeting space. Sledge said patrons constantly asked for the amenity of extra room to accommodate small groups of people. “We have two new staff members who handle operations and reservations for new meeting rooms,” Sledge said. “Meeting space was identified as a community priority for the new library, and our design team pulled out all the stops to make it a reality. Library patrons can now reserve private study rooms for small meetings, test taking or quiet study.”

The library’s 3,000 square feet of meeting space can accommodate up to 225 people in an auditorium layout.

A retractable wall allows reconfiguration into two smaller spaces for up to 75 and 150 people. Sleek new tables and chairs make the space inviting and comfortable.

For conferences and meetings, ceiling-mounted projectors, speakers and assorted microphones are among available assets. “Interest to rent the space for after-hours use for private receptions and celebrations is already high,” Sledge said.

A breakthrough in modern innovation, the MakerSpace area contains impressive equipment, powered by savvy minds of library users to embark on one-of-a-kind projects. It’s “a space for possibility; a space for imagination; a space for growth; a space to learn,” Sledge said in describing MakerSpace.

“The Madison Public Library’s Makerspace, aptly named The Studio, is a space for our community to get creative,” Sledge explained. “Featuring a collection that includes everything from sewing machines to 3D printers, our mixed-use MakerSpace is one of infinite possibility where patrons can cultivate business ideas, blow off steam creatively, explore possibilities through rapid prototyping … and hopefully learn something new.”

Libraries, Sledge emphasized, are much more than just books.

“Our Studio shows that with its exciting and cutting-edge technology, which we hope will serve our community as an incubator for ideas,” Sledge said.

Anne Wood, the library’s Studio specialist, is working closely with MakerSpace projects.

Librarians and staff members are thrilled “to have such a fabulous place to come to work every day,” Sledge said. “Seeing the enthusiasm of the community visiting the building for the first time is energizing beyond words.”

The new drive-through drop-off window for books and media is “a win for everyone,” Sledge said. Librarians no longer need to exit the building with carts to gather returned items, and patrons have an easy convenience. “The new book drop expedites the check-in process for customers and allows library staff to spend time working with the public to connect with technology, great books and other new library experiences.”

Among plans for 2018, the library staff currently is organizing an Outdoor Film Series for adults and children that will be broadcast in the spacious exterior patio.

Water safety tips for summer Kids love to play and swim in the water when summer temps start to climb, and now is a great time to remind our kids and ourselves of some valuable tips to help them have a great time and be safe, too. Drowning is the second leading cause of death for children ages 5 to 14, with children from communities of color at greatest risk. Everyone can learn basic water safety and how to swim at the Y! The Hogan Family YMCA offers swim lessons for ages 6 months to adult. The Y progressive swim program helps reduce the risk of childhood drowning and develops a lifelong love of swimming. Because the Y is a nonprofit community organization with a charitable mission, tuition assistance is available to families who qualify!

Before letting your children hit the water this summer, remember these few tips to ensure they have the most enjoyable and safest experience possible.

1. Never swim alone. Teach your children that they should only swim in locations where a lifeguard is on duty.

2. Supervise your children whenever they’re in water. Whether it’s bath time or taking a dip in a pool or lake, make sure your children are within arm’s reach at all times.

3. Don’t engage in breath holding activities. Children shouldn’t hold their breath for a prolonged amount of time while swimming, as this can cause drowning. Other severe physical side-effects are also possible.

4. Wear a Life Jacket: Inexperienced or non-swimmers should wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket.

5. Reach, Throw, Don’t Go! Don’t jump in the water to save a friend who is struggling in deep water. If a child finds their friend in deep water unexpectedly, their natural reaction may be to jump in the water to try to save them. Even if a child is a great swimmer, a panicked person will overpower them, pulling them underwater with them. The Y’s Safety

Around Water program teaches the “reach, throw, don’t go” concept of using a long object to reach for them and pull them to safety. By using this technique children can help their friend without compromising their own safety.

6. Enroll your children in water safety or swim lessons. Just like teaching your children to look both ways before they cross the street, participating in formal water safety lessons teaches them an important life skill.

Alongside the rolling pastures and fields of the Clift family farm, John and Susan Clift have chosen a rural lifestyle that is continuing the Clift legacy. They own S & J Produce Farms.

John and Susan’s reasons are straightforward for deciding to operate their small business that has big demands for physical work and many hours on-site.

“We love Madison and the farm life,” John said.

S & J Produce Farms’ address is 8140 U.S. 72 West, across from the Target center.

In early 2018, Jack Clift (John’s 99-year-old grandfather) sold the family farm covering 550 acres to developer Louis Breland. The Clift family has owned the land since 1850. Knox Creek (roughly) is the northern boundary of the parcel, Wall Triana eastward, U.S. Highway 72 to the south and Balch Road westward.

In coming years on this land, Breland will create a mixed-use environment with residential housing,

office space, retail center and also preserve green space.

However, Jack Clift did not sell the acres comprising ‘the home place,’ where John and Susan Clift have established their produce business.

Furthermore, they live in a restored house on this land. John Thomas Clift, who is John Clift’s great-great-grandfather, built the house in 1881.

John is a native Madisonian. Susan grew up in Middle Georgia. “I helped my aunts and uncles on their farms,” she said.

When their ‘stand’ opens in April, John and Susan have green and red tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, squash, zucchini, cantaloupe, onions, dry and boiled peanuts, corn, potatoes, strawberries, turnip and mustard greens, sweet corn. Studies that John pursued at Auburn University help him in managing the business and in experimenting with new vegetable varieties and soil enhancement.

Feedback from customers has been very positive.

“They love coming here, and their children love it, too,” Susan said. Shoppers especially rave about the quality and taste of tomatoes and collard greens that the Clifts sell.

John and Susan have incorporated a few sentimental touches from the Clift farm in their business. “Our new produce tables are made from the original logs out of the old home place that we live in,” Susan said.

However, they don’t regret the sale of the farm and new look that the landscape will have as the property sees development. “Life has many changes. We have learned to accept and embrace change,” Susan said.

In their determination to inform patients, Integrity physicians have collaborated with K Heath, a health technology company that empowers consumers by giving them access to more relevant, reliable health information.

That access is available “through our AI-powered health app, K, which just launched in the United States in the Huntsville/Madison area May 1,” K Health co-founder/CEO Allon Bloch said. “Chat with K about your symptoms and find out in seconds what people like you had and how they were treated. The app is free and available for iPhone and Android for adults 18-85.”

The K app gives consumers access to more relevant health information than online searches.

“Search your symptoms on the web, and what you find will be overly general and often scary and misleading,” Bloch said. “The content isn’t aware of your context.” K Health pursued a totally different approach. “K uses machine learning to understand what happened

(previously) to millions of real people like you. When you chat with K about your symptoms, K compares your case to similar cases of your age and gender. You can learn what they had and all the different ways they were treated.”

Using K requires a few steps: • Download K from the app store.

• “Chat” with K about symptoms. “You’ll see what people like you had, and learn about the doctors, tests, medication and other treatments that were part of their road to recovery,” Bloch said.

• For a provider to review your case, share it from the app with Integrity’s provider team. The app does not provide any diagnoses or medical advice by itself.

• Integrity doctors will review your comments and respond with advice about your next steps. An Integrity provider will reassure you or prescribe medication to you – without requiring an office visit.

The K reports inform Integrity providers about a patient’s symptoms, symptom attributes like duration and severity and relevant symptoms they don’t have. “Often, this information is all a provider needs to assess the patient,” Bloch said.

In some cases, the patient will need a test or physical examination. “In those cases, the provider will review your K report with you during a visit to the clinic,” Bloch said.

A launch party May 1 offered an enjoyable venue for area residents and medical professionals to meet doctors from Integrity Family Care and learn about the potential of the app from K Health. Old Black Bear Brewing Company at 208 Main St. in historic downtown Madison furnished the setting for the upbeat event.

Launch guests enjoyed “light bites,” such as beer-battered pretzel snacks, hummus dip and fresh vegetables, plus craft beer, at the informal gathering.

K Health representatives served a free beverage to any guest who downloaded the K app.

There is no one person more ingrained into the local music scene than Jim Parker. He is the soul connection to music – for all music-lovers.

For the past 14 years, Parker has hosted the incredibly talent-filled and successful Songwriter Series held almost monthly at the Von Braun Center.

Named after its host, Jim Parker’s Songwriter Series features a bevy of songwriters, many of whom have numerous No. 1 hits to their credit. As presenters in the series, they not only sing their songs: they also tell of the songs’ beginnings, the writing process and the meanings behind many of the most popular tunes to be heard on this planet.

Each Songwriter Series gathering is held at the Playhouse of the VBC, in a setting designed for intimacy: the performers are seated just feet away from the audience on a small stage, and attending crowds gather around in comfortable seats to enjoy the marvelous venue acoustics and the talent of the performers.

“The Songwriter Series is a dream come true for me. Being a songwriter myself, I understand many times songwriters don’t receive proper respect, as the fans don’t know the songwriters; they just know the artists of their favorite songs,” said Parker. “It is most important to me to let other songwriters expose their songs and history to those music fans.”

Parker, who has lived in Madison since 1985 and has a full-time job as an award-winning realtor for Averbuch Reality, began his music endeavor in the 1960s when he started playing music at age 18. He soon helped form a band called The Kitchen Cinq that was based in the Southwest U.S., including Texas and New Mexico. He next made the trek to the City

of Angels, Los Angeles, Calif., where he played for several well-known performers, including Sonny and Cher. He moved to Nashville in 1975.

“I was living in the York Hotel on Eighth Avenue in Nashville, and I could see Acuff Row. I met singer-songwriter John Anderson through my barber, and we began writing country songs together,” said Parker. “I wasn’t writing country music at the time, but I soon took a job in the mailroom at the Country Music Association. The passion to write songs really began soon afterward.”

In the Music City he met his wife, Lysa, and began writing songs in the world of country music. Some of those songs became instant classics, especially the hit for Anderson titled “Chicken Truck.”

Even after his move to Madison, Parker continued to write songs, and his desire to share those songs with anyone who was willing to listen led him to begin hosting music events at the Bandito Burrito in Madison. He hosted songwriters’ gatherings at different locations for more than three years before moving to the VBC behind the support of VBC’s director Steve Maples.

Considered one of the best musical events and best entertainment values in the Huntsville area, the Songwriter Series allows topnotch songwriters to be on stage and showcase their talents that are many times better than the artists who took those songs to the top of the charts. “When fans attend the Songwriter Series, we want them to laugh, cry, think and feel good about where they have been. We want those fans to be moved by emotion,” Parker explained. “It’s important to me that I’ve done that.”

When you come to Madison Hospital as a patient or visitor, you know there are many outstanding people here. The hospital recently honored two outstanding employees.

Shelly Friedrich was selected as the 2018 RN of the Year. Friedrich’s award has been a lifetime in the making. She knew she wanted to be a nurse at age 5, after going to see her baby brother in the Neonatal ICU at Montclair Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham.

Friedrich spent the first part of her nursing career at UAB Hospital, the old Woodland Medical Center in Cullman, Decatur General Hospital and Cullman Regional Medical Center. She joined Madison Hospital in October 2015 and splits her time between Labor & Delivery, the nursey and the Medical-Surgical floor.

“I’m in shock,” she said told me after receiving the Nurse of the Year award. “I didn’t know I had made enough of an impression to get an award so special.”

When she isn’t caring for moms and newborns, Friedrich coaches her son’s archery team at Vinemont Middle School. She and her husband, Davey, also raise about 90,000 chickens on their farm in Falkville.

I’m very proud of Environmental Services Aide Temeka Holden who we honored as the hospital’s Employee of the Year. Temeka works in our Emergency Department, a fast paced environment that can be highly stressful. She however has a contagious smile and personality and always goes out of her way to help our patients and visitors. The pride in her works shows every day.

She has a young son who is the light of her life and enjoys spending time with her family. She was overwhelmed by being selected this year.

The new field corps with Rocketeers Drum & Bugle Corps will march a full field show with brass, percussion and color guard.

The Rocketeers have brought the excitement and expertise of drum and bugle corps to North Alabama. The group attracts members across not only North Alabama but also surrounding states.

“We have expanded our inventory of bugles and drums to accommodate 36 brass players and 18 percussionists,” executive director Bill Gullatt said. “After being accepted as an applicant with Drum Corps Associates, we are scheduled for our site evaluations in May 2018.”

Gullat, who started playing trombone in 1976, said he has “a passion for music and marching arts and want to share that with others. I also want to make sure the new generation of musicians is exposed to drum corps.”

Founded in winter 2010, The Rocketeers officially formed the North Alabama Drum and Bugle Corps Association, a nonprofit organization, in early 2011. An early goal was to compete in DCA mini Madison Living 37

corps (21 members, brass and percussion). The Rocketeers competed as an adult brass ensemble at DCA Championships from 2011-2013.

In 2013 the instrumentalists won Brass Choir Champions at DCA Championships in Annapolis, Md. In 2014 the group became one of the first three SoundSport teams in a pilot program by DCI. The Rocketeers have received Silver or Gold awards at all DCI SoundSport competitions in 2015-2017. The musicians competed in DCA Mini Corps from 2014-2016, and adjudicators scored all three performances in the upper 80s.

“We have worked with Dr. David Ragsdale in the Department of Music at the University of Alabama in Huntsville to secure a rehearsal location for our field corps for the 2018 season,” Gullatt said.

The Rocketeers have purchased uniforms for the field corps from Alliance Drum & Bugle Corps in Atlanta. The color guard bought equipment from Santa Clara Vanguard.

In 2018, The Rocketeers will operate as two separate groups with a full staff. The Rocketeers Drum & Bugle Corps, made up of instrumentalists 14 and older, will march a full field show with brass, percussion and color guard. The field corps’ show will have a Latin theme. The Rocketeers - Solid Rocket Brass is the original group, an all-adult mini corps/stage corps that stands in place when playing. SRB has performed at Panoply and plans a brewery concert this summer.

Along with Gullatt, staff members are Doug Childs, tour manager; Roque Haines, equipment manager; Connor Johnson, operations manager; and Thomas Peterson, program director.

The Rocketeers will compete in All Age events in both DCI and DCA circuits. Their tentative 2018 performance schedule includes events in four states:

JULY 4: Baltimore, Md., Parade Circuit.

JULY 13: Millbrook, Drum Corps International JULY 14: Woodstock, Ga., DCA. JULY 21: Columbus, Ohio, DCA. AUG. 4: Pell City, DCA. AUG. 26: Hiram, Ga., DCA. In addition, these musicians have performed in exhibition at DCI North Alabama at Alabama A&M University and entertained at Russel Hill Cancer Foundation, Straight to Ale Brewery, St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Providence.

They have rehearsed at Lindsay Lane Baptist Church in Athens and now at UAH in Roberts Hall.
