CHRISTMAS CAPERS Virtual Event A re-enactment of one of Madison’s most charming traditions will have another reprisal in 2020 … but in virtual format.

During years of the Great Depression in the early 1930s, Hughes started a holiday tradition dubbed the “Christmas Chicken Capers”. On Christmas Eve, ‘Doc’ Hughes threw live chickens from the roof of his business at 200 Main St. in downtown Madison. The chickens had tags attached to their legs, and people could redeem the tags for prizes in Hughes’ store. Anyone who caught the chickens received

the prizes and kept the chicken for Christmas dinner.

In recent years, the Christmas Chicken Capers evolved from live chickens to rubber chickens with gift cards from local retail stores.

Due to COVID-19, 2020 will see the Madison Christmas Capers in a virtual version. For prizes, visit historicmadisonstation.com. Fill out the registration form and email it MSHPSociety@gmail.com.

7TH ANNUAL MADISON POLAR EXPRESS CHRISTMAS TREE TRAIL Downtown Madison The 7th Annual Madison Polar Express Christmas Tree Trail, hosted by the Madison Station Historic Preservation Society and the City of Madison, is planning for another exciting display.

Decorated Christmas trees will line the area between Main Street Café and Sullivan Street in the heart of downtown Madison. They will be part of the 2020 Christmas tree decorating contest.

Businesses, groups, organizations and individuals enter

the contest and decorate a tree. Participants are eligible for awards, including “Mayor’s Choice”, “Most Creative” and “Honorable Mention”.

According to Madison Station Historic Preservation Society president Debbie Overcash, the trees will be spread out a minimum of eight to ten feet in the fresh air to allow visitors to enjoy a little “normal” this Christmas season. “Trees will again be on Main Street and depending on spacing and volume may continue onto Front Street,” she said.

While we cannot yet foresee the future of our national economy, the job growth in

the North Alabama region is tremendous. We are fortunate to live in an area where the trajectory of growth is growing in multiple federal and non-federal areas, our foreseeable future locally will continue to keep us focused on managing growth. This is something that hasn’t changed in 2020.

Many move here for job opportunities and quickly realize the priority of education in Madison has always been paramount for our community. Our Madison City School system is ranked top in the state and recognized as National Blue Ribbon Award winners for academic excellence. The commitment to education comes from parents, teachers and leadership creating welcoming learning environments for our kids to succeed. This has not changed in 2020.

Recently, Madison was ranked #1 Best Place to Live in Alabama 2020 by niche.com.

While COVID may have changed how we spend our time, living in Madison remains special. Our citizens have found ways to navigate the pandemic through creative outdoor and socially distanced events, and also supporting businesses and neighbors in responsible fellowship. The people of our city make up the fabric of our community. As a collective, we create a diverse and innovative place to plant your roots. This has not changed in 2020.

This is the time of year we give thanks for our many blessings.

I’m thankful to be part of a community that genuinely supports its local hospital. For some Madison residents, that means allowing us to deliver their precious baby or perform a needed surgery.

For Krishna Srikakolapu, supporting Madison Hospital means serving on our volunteer hospital board.

Like many in Madison, the Srikakolapus are an engineering family. Krishna works at Huntsville Utilities as Director of Information Technology and has three degrees – in electrical engineering, industrial engineering and business administration-finance. His lovely wife, Sudha, is also an engineer.

Their sons Harsha and Siddhu are both Eagle Scouts. Harsha works for Huntsville Hospital; Siddhu is a medical student at UAB.

Despite his busy work schedule, Krishna makes the time to volunteer. In addition to the Madison Hospital Board, he serves on the nonprofit boards of Huntsville Hospital Foundation, the Madison Industrial Development Board and Huntsville India Association.

Krishna has lived in Madison since 1998 and understands why it’s so important for a growing community like Madison to have a top-notch hospital.

“Having a well-equipped hospital in close proximity can make the difference between life and death during a medical emergency,” he told me. “Madison Hospital is not only a crowning jewel for our city but is a blessing to this community.”

I lean heavily on the wisdom and experience of Krishna and our 12 other board members.

They provide crucial guidance as we work to meet Madison’s ever-evolving health care needs.

For Christmas decor, Mason and Ashley Overcash intersperse new traditions with gifted mementos from their childhood homes. Their home is nestled in a cul-de-sac in an established neighborhood in the heart of Madison.

As a family, the Overcashes anticipate Christmas decorating the day after Thanksgiving. All day, they wear Christmas pajamas and listen to Christmas music while creating a magical setting, floor to ceiling. “Our children – Laeth, 6, and Margaret Anne, 4 – love to decorate their rooms for all holidays … especially at Christmas,” Ashley said.

The foyer’s formal tree greets guests in themes of lime green, silver and white. Birds perch on glittered branches. A white amaryllis sits by the stairs, with banisters draped in cascading garlands of live Leyland Cypress and bows.

The 10-foot living room tree -- the family favorite -- “is flooded with hundreds of near-to-our-heart ornaments, including ones from our childhoods that our parents passed on to us, and handmade macaroni crafts and painted-hands ornaments our children bring home from school,” Ashley said. Mason and Ashley prefer a tree with colored lights and trimming in red’s Christmas cheer.

“The children love to hide under the tree’s large base and make forts.

We appreciate looking at older ornaments and reflect on many positive memories of Christmas,” Mason said.

Following their families’ tradition, each Christmas stocking reveals a new ornament, representative of each person.

In Margaret Anne’s room, her white tree holds pink, sparkly ornaments.

“We honored her preferences with … fuzzy and glittery ornaments, minia-

ture Christmas trees, unicorns and dramatic hot-pink bow,” Ashley said.

Laeth’s tree, more masculine and consistent with his bedroom decor, features real pinecones, burgundyand-hunter-green velvet ornaments, gold reindeer and bronze snowflakes.

“Laeth looks forward to sleeping in his Christmas sheets with scenes of Santa, snowmen and reindeers,” Mason said. Laeth’s favorite nutcracker, a pirate, guards his shelf.

“We have multiple wreaths hanging throughout the house made from live magnolia leaves and red holly berries,” Mason said. Front planters are packed with magnolia leaves and oversized red ornaments. The exterior has 14 wreaths and red bows.

A custom Christmas painting created by Mason is hung on the wall, along with Mason’s painting of the nativity scene over the mantle. The mantle has garland of Leyland Cypress and magnolia.

Fascinated with nutcrackers, Laeth and Margaret Ann look forward to choosing a new one when Christmas decorations hit the stores. “They play with them like real dolls and soldiers, so they’re well-worn and well-loved,” Mason said. “We never miss (attending) local performances of ‘The Nutcracker’ and often see ballet re-enactments by our children in our own living room.”

“Our most important Christmas Eve tradition includes attending a church service with our extended families to honor the true reason for celebrating Christmas,” Ashley said. “Our children participate in the live nativity story … a special part of our Christmases since we were children and now equally important to share.”

Back home, Laeth and Margaret Ann leave cookies and milk for Santa. Finished with gift wrapping, Mason and Ashley ‘play Santa’ and enjoy a reflective evening.

eagerly wait atop the stairs for permission to race down to stockings and presents. “Our extended families are invited to spend the day. Homemade apple cider is left on the stove and a hot chocolate bar is open,” Ashley said.

While opening gifts, everyone savors breakfast casserole and candied bacon. By midmorning, a Christmas movie is playing as they decorate gingerbread houses. A traditional dinner offers turkey, dressing, cranberries, potatoes, greens and pie.

Along with decorating, all the family volunteers to serve others. They enjoy lighting of downtown Madison’s Christmas trees, First Baptist Church Huntsville’s “Living Christmas Tree,” Santa’s Village and caroling with children’s ministry. “Certainly, our favorite performances (are) our children’s school music programs,” Ashley said.

Mason teaches art at James Clemens High School.

Ashley is a psychologist at Valley Christian Counseling. They attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham for undergraduate degrees. Mason holds a master’s degree in art education. Ashley completed a doctorate’s degree in psychology.

OUT&ABOUT COLUMBIA ELEMENTARY VETERAN’S DAY PARADE - Madison City Schools saluted veterans and their families last month.

Nearly one in three students in MCS schools are military connected. Schools across the district honored veterans in various ways leading up to Veteran’s Day, from video tributes, to a hall of heroes wall, to this parade at Columbia Elementary. COVID-19 restrictions did not deter schools from finding ways to recognize veterans - retired and active duty - for their service to country.

If ever we were looking forward to a new year, this is it! Everyone I know is ready for the calendar to turn to 2021.

2020 has dealt us inconvenient change and, for some, inconceivable loss. In the 16 years that I’ve led Kids to Love, this year has been hands-down the most challenging.

But in the middle of the hard, I have also found hope. Right now, our community is helping Kids to Love fill Christmas wish lists for more than 1,500 children who live in foster care. This month, KTECH graduated its 13th class! And just a couple months ago, we broke

ground on our Cottage Community, tiny homes that will support our girls at Davidson Farms when they are ready to spread their wings into independence.

The year 2020 taught us that our service at Kids to Love is essential because the needs of children in foster care cannot be ignored. Your commitment has allowed us to serve without interruption or delay. On behalf of the Kids to Love team, I give you our sincerest and heartfelt thanks.

When Jamie Lambert visited north Alabama in the Spring of 2019 to spend time with close friends, she had no idea that she would leave with a business idea that would change the trajectory of her family’s lives.

Lambert, a fitness enthusiast, was shocked to visit our area and discover that no one had brought Burn Boot Camp to North Alabama. As avid members at the Burn Boot Camp location in her Springhill, Tennessee community, she knew that this was something missing from our area.

Fast forward two months later, and the papers were signed to launch Burn Boot Camp right here in Madison, Alabama.

Burn Boot Camp, located in the Walmart Shopping Center on Hwy. 72, officially opened the beginning of March, just days before the pandemic swept the country.

Despite having to make a slew of changes and roll with what felt like

punch after punch, local franchise owner Lambert strongly believes that Burn Boot Camp is here to stay and can’t wait for more community members to experience the transformation that is happening inside their facility.

What is Burn Boot Camp?

Burn Boot Camp is a fitness facility that offers 45 minute “camps” throughout the day where participants are coached throughout their workout in a group setting with nonstop movement. Trainers demonstrate moves and then walk around helping with modifications, technique, and overall motivation.

“If trainers see you performing a move incorrectly, they’ll help you. We don’t want any injuries in here. They’re also known to walk over and hand you a heavier weight if they see you working with something that’s too light for your ability level,” shared Lambert.

“The trainers will push you!”

Lambert couldn’t stress enough that all fitness levels and abilities are encouraged at Burn Boot Camp. She says that the trainers will meet each member where he or she is at.

“We pride ourselves in knowing the name of every single person that walks through our doors.”

Lambert also shared that trainers often hold 15-minute one-on-one focus meetings with participants where they get to know his or her personal goals, previous struggles, and much more. This is also a great time for members to ask nutritional questions.

“Something our members would tell you that they love about Burn Boot Camp is our trainers. They are heavily involved. When they know your goals, it helps them to the best of their ability to see you reach them.”

For those who would prefer to work out from home, Burn Boot Camp is ready and willing to help participants do that. Located inside the facility is a

large TV that where trainers see members who are logged in to live classes via Zoom.

“Our trainers will keep up with what they’re doing on the screen and verbally coach them through each exercise.”

Lambert shared that offering camps over Zoom is something that’s new due to the pandemic but is an option they plan to keep around.

Camps are offered all throughout the day starting at 5 a.m. with some that are for just woman and others that are co-ed. A handful of camps also included complimentary “childwatch”. These designations are all clearly made online.

Joining a camp is as easy as picking a timeslot to go, arriving a few minutes ahead of time, grabbing your equipment, and finding a spot (which is clearly labeled with blue tape to promote distancing from others). The trainers take it from there!

Children who are in childwatch are well cared for, able to use restrooms, and play in an indoor environment with a window where parents and children can see each other if desired. Lambert stressed that all items in the childwatch area are sanitized between each camp. Each child’s temperature is taken upon arrival.

One of my favorite touches inside Burn Boot Camp is the wall of laminated pictures and stories of those who have achieved various goals. Some are weight-related while others are related to mental health, or simply just getting more out of life.

“Everyone here wants to build others up. We want to help you reach your goals. Our employees, our members, everyone is just amazing. The community is unlike any other, and it’s the most inspiring.”

Lambert shared that the owners all started as members but that their love for the brand is what brought them here.

“We looked at the real estate market and knew that Madison was the right place for the first location,” shared Lambert. “We have two more locations we plan to open in the next year as well, so we’re excited.”

Lambert said that community can expect additional Burn Boot Camp locations in Huntsville (potentially the Jones Valley area) as well as another location in Madison (the south side of town is looking promising!)

Donations collected through the endeavour went to benefit COVID-19 relief within the Madison community.

Funds came from pledges, donations and sponsorships of the rocks.

Executive Director of Madison Visionary Partners, Liz Brinton, described the Madison River of Hope as a permanent mark in our community as a sign and memory of a time when perseverance and socially-distant togetherness was needed more than ever.

It is a positive testament to the many ways the Madison community came together to help one another during COVID-19.

“Participants painted their rocks with a positive message of hope and resilience as our community comes together to overcome the COVID pandemic,” Brinton explained. “Some honored a special person in their life who has inspired them during the pandemic by painting their name on a rock.”

The Lessmanns spent countless hours as a family on this project. They worked in the hot blaring sun along side other volunteers to create this testament to the community spirit that makes Madison home. This was just one of several volunteer projects the family undertook this year.

“This project is about the community coming together in a time of crisis to help each other,” Alice said. “It will always serve as a reminder of the good in people’s hearts for each other, and how as a community we come together for each other in trying times.”

More about Madison’s 2020 Family of the Year As small business owners, Steve and Alice instilled their faith and familybased core values in their corporate structure. Their business, Signalink, Inc., won the 2019 Madison Chamber of Commerce’s Best Business of the Year and the 2019 Best Professional Services Business awards. This year they received the Excellence in Leadership & Service from the Madison Chamber of Commerce.

munity, they are dedicated to advocating and promoting other aspiring and existing small businesses, as reflected

by Alice’s work as the 2019 Vice Chair of the Huntsville/Madison Chamber’s Women’s Business Council, and her work with the Women’s Economic Development Council and Women in Defense organizations, as well as Steve’s work as a board member of the Madison Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities (CEO) program for high school seniors.

Alice is a graduate of the Leadership Greater Huntsville’s Flagship program, and serves as Board Secretary for Madison Visionary Partners. As retired military members of the Army National Guard, both Steve and Alice are very active in supporting organizations that serve veterans.

She was recently appointed to the Madison City Schools Board of Education to replace Ranae Bartlett, who was elected to the Madison City Council.

Leah, a 11th grader and Ben, an 9th grader, participate in extracurricular activities ranging from wrestling to cheerleading to basketball to drama to volleyball. Leah is involved with the Student 2 Student program at Bob Jones High School, was accepted into the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program this year, and is involved in the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.

This Fall, she was selected to be on the Bob Jones Homecoming Court.

Ben was chosen by his principal to participate in the Junior Nationals Young Leaders Camp, volunteers in the preschool at Asbury, and enjoys playing Madison sports. Both children prioritize education and were accepted into the National Junior Honor Society.

“Our family knows that our faith in God, community involvement and sharing life is a gift that brings us together and strengthens our love for each other.”

For the Lessmanns, as the Madison Family of the Year, they spent doing what they do best...living their lives with a positive attitude while showing love to others. In that way, they have set an example other families can find hope in.

Dexter and Maria Troupe have recently brought a neat addition to our Madison community: Wine & Design.

Wine & Design in Madison, Alabama Maria Troupe, co-owner of our local Wine & Design, shared that “obviously we are a paint and sip”, but that this business offers five divisions that make it so much more than what some customers may be expecting this business to be.

1. Children For “little Picassos, we have Art Buzz Kids”, says Troupe.

A private room will also be available for birthday parties!

Art Buzz Kids classes will be for children of all ages, and class options are available online.

2. D.I.Y. Wine & Design offers classes where guests create takehome items that don’t involve a paintbrush. A couple of examples include door hangers/wreaths and chunky, knit blankets. All kinds of home-related items as well as items that could be gifted will be offered.

Keep an eye out for the full class schedule online to keep up with upcoming D.I.Y. classes.

3. Paint It Forward A play on words to the phrase “pay it forward,” this division focuses on partnering with local and national organizations to benefit the greater good. The franchise as a whole is greatly affiliated with making strides in the ALS community. As a local business, Troupe says that three avenues she’s passionate about giving back to are Susan G. Komen for breast cancer, charities that work with Alzheimer’s, and The American Heart Association.

4. Bringing the Party to You “Our ‘On Wheels’ division is where we bring the party to you. From Bachelorette parties at a local hotel to family reunions at a park, we do it all.”

To get started with setting up a custom party at your home or the venue of your choice, visit them online to fill out a form.

5. Team Building Wine & Design works with teams of all kinds, both instudio or at a location of the team’s choice.

Something really unique they offer is the option to pick one pre-selected image, and everyone on the team paints “a piece of the puzzle”.

For example, a team may decide to paint their company’s logo with 20 attendees. Wine & Design would split the logo into 20 sections and let everyone paint a pre-sketched portion that the business can then all piece together.

Troupes shared that this works well for teams of all sizes and that she really enjoys seeing examples of businesses that have hung these in their workplaces.

Sip Something else unique about Wine & Design is that they are not a “BYOB”. All beer, wine, and non-alcoholic drinks will be served in-house, making attending an event like this even easier. All guests have to do is show up and be treated to an array of beverages.

Health & Safety When asked about COVID-19 precautions, Troupe listed many. She says that they are more than capable of following CDC guidelines and hope interested guests will still come in to enjoy everything they have to offer.

• The room typically seats 25 people, but they will open by only seating 10 people per class (just two people per table, so keep this in mind if you attend with a party of three).

• The spacious private room typically seats 16 but will initially only seat eight.

• All employees will be wearing Wine and Design masks.

• Hand sanitizer will be placed all throughout the studio.

• All soap and paper dispensers are hands-free.

guests will email a photo of their pets ahead of time and then come in to paint the pre-sketched version on a canvas. A similar concept is in the works where guests will have the opportunity to paint their homes.

Raven Mobley, one of five artists who will be leading guests at Wine & Design, says that the can’t encourage people enough that all skill levels are welcome.

“Lose that concept of ‘I can’t paint’ because we are all here just to have fun. Everyone can create art, and everyone can enjoy coming here. Plus, you’ll leave here with an amazing art piece. Really, we just want everyone to have fun.”

Artist Amber Chesser agreed and shared that it’s enjoyable to have fun with friends and create something at the same time.

“I’m a project-driven person, so I enjoy coming to a place like this and working on something that lasts.”

For many who ask the question of why would anyone want to push their physical and mental capabilities to extremes, and many times to the limit, just to see how much weight you can lift, Josh Little has the answer for those who ask.

“It’s my passion as I was a mere 100-pound freshman in high school and stopped playing football because I was too small, but I still had the desire to excel at sports and soon took to lifting weights,” said Little.

Today, the 36-year old powerlifter currently holds four national records and 16 Alabama state records in the sport that is pure and simple - a strength sport. In powerlifting the basics are incredibly simple- lift the heaviest weight you can and you win.

For Little, who was born in New Jersey, grew up in Virginia and moved to Madison three years ago, is a 10year veteran as a certified personal trainer with the National Academy of

Sports Medicine and currently works as part of Precision Personal Training out of the Powerhouse Gym in west Huntsville. He has a broad spectrum of a clientele of around 30 clients who want someone to change their ways to become healthy and remain that way.

“We ask what their needs are, find out what they want and disperse them out to the proper personal trainer,” said Little. “Many want my expertise services in weight training due to my background and current success in powerlifting. I can also train someone who wants to become a powerlifter.”

Little took up wrestling in the fifth grade and continued through high school where his Christiansburg Blue Demons won the 2002 Virginia State Championship, all awhile lifting weights, which in turn dramatically changed his physical appearance, gave him increased strength and led him on his path as powerlifting champion and his fancy for helping others.

“I was inspired to become a personal trainer as I was always around athletics and saw myself changing physically and those facts drove me to want to help others,” said Little. “For me, it isn’t really a job as I enjoy seeing my clients become better and sometimes reach their goals. That feeling gives me satisfaction. As for those who want to become powerlifters, I give them the necessary knowledge and teach them the techniques to become successful. I have some of my clients who have set state records.”

The 5-foot-10, 232-pound athlete did not enter his first powerlifting meet until after he arrived in Madison. The competition was held in Decatur in December, 2018. He walked away a winner and has never stopped.

The father to a six-year old daughter, Little spends as much time as possible with her and makes her his priority in life. He also cares for his two pet dogs.

“I’ve always been into bodybuilding after I began to grow and form a shape I desired in my own body. I also became really strong,” said Little. “I never trained for a meet until I arrived in Madison and, after that first meet, I was hooked as I set four state records in my first competition.”

Powerlifters perform three competitive events- the squat, the bench press, and the deadlift. Each contestant receives three attempts at each event and only the heaviest successful attempt is used in the competition results. Little’s personal best in each event are: bench press- 391.3-pounds; squat- 600.8-pounds; deadlift606.3-pounds. His strength is well documented within his family and friends. “Yes, my friends and family many times get me to move things for them. I’m strong for a reason so I may as well help out.”

Despite many misconceptions to the sport, powerlifters can do more than just show their raw strength. The sport includes all ages, both sexes, different weight classes and age divisions. For many participants, competition is the main driving force for the sport while others have the drive to push their own talents as far as possible, test themselves and reach their own personal goals. Each are motivated in their own personal ways.

and was completely out of any physical workouts for three months and his recovery lasted a full year before he was back at full strength. He understands the mechanics of powerlifting and physical workouts in general. One-on-one training with his clients cause relationships to be made to where injury prevention is a must.

“There are a lot of moving pieces in the sport that put a ton of stress on your body that can go out at any time,” said Little. “In my training sessions I look to see if I detect any unbalances in the techniques used. I also use video to show clients how to move the weights and watch to make sure all parts are working in tandem.”

Among his clients his oldest was 82 and had others as young as age eight. Little said for those wishing to be powerlifters, “Always have the correct form in lifting and have that mindset over the amount of weight. I personally feel I have great form in my lifting and compared my techniques to many of the top lifters in the sport and practice the proper way to lift as I’m always looking to get better and doing it correctly.”

“I’ve always liked helping others as fitness and sports have always been a big part of my life,” he added.

Little is a perfect example of pushing life in every aspect to his best capabilities and to his limits.

Cranberry Relish One package whole, fresh cranberries, 2 – 3 tangerines, 1 cup sugar, 1 can (8oz.) of crushed pineapple, (drained) and 1 cup coarsely chopped pecans. Rinse and drain cranberries and remove any stems. Process cranberries in a food processor, then dump them into a large bowl. Pour sugar over cranberries. If cranberries are too tart, simply add some more sugar, to taste.

Cut open the tangerines, remove any seeds and the middle membrane, but leave the rind on. Process the tangerines and add to cranberries. Add the pineapple and pecans, stirring all together well. Place in airtight container in refrigerator until needed. This can be made ahead of time to allow the flavors to blend together.

Cheese Grits 1 cup Quick Grits + 3 cups water, cook until thick; add 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, 1 stick butter, 3 eggs, 2 T. garlic salt and ½ cup milk. Mix well, pour into a 9 x 13 casserole dish. Bake for 1 hour at 350 degrees.

Double cooked Ham This is an easy way to add that wonderful smoke and sweet flavor to an already cooked ham. We generally pick up a couple of bone in, spiral cut hams (with a package of glaze included) from Costco.

On my Big Green Egg (or your Traeger, Kamado Joe or Weber), stabilize your fire at 210-215 degrees. I use the ConvEGGtor plate with legs up for indirect heat. Toss a chunk or two of Cherry Wood onto the lighted lump charcoal and allow the smoke to thin out to a thin blue smoke before adding ham.

After removing the plastic spacer from the ham, set the flat side down onto the grill. Close the lid and allow it to heat for 2 hours. Monitor your temperature.

While waiting for your ham to absorb that delicate, light, sweet smoke, prepare your glaze. Roll the hams over to their side and lightly drizzle the sugary glaze between the spiral cuts, saving enough to repeat on other side. After 30 minutes, roll it over and repeat glazing. After another 30 minutes, remove the ham from the grill and tent loosely with aluminum foil, until ready to serve. “Cook’s privilege is to sample that first layer!”

Patrick’s Asparagus Immediately after removing the ham, place a black cast iron skillet onto the grill. Add a couple of slices of Kerry Gold Irish butter and bring to a sizzle. Drop small, fresh asparagus into skillet, season liberally with Hardin’s Original Seasoning, stir to

sugar, ½ tsp. almond extract. Beat the butter, add sugar, milk and almond extract and beat well. Yields approximately 1 cup.

Ice your cookies, add any sprinkles for extra color or decorating, as desired.

COCKTAILS: For a delicious and beautiful holiday cocktail with a fun seasonal twist on a classy drink, try: Winter White Cosmo (inspired by Bonefish Grill, imitated by many, enjoyed by all) Use ½ oz. fresh lime juice, ½ oz. simple syrup, 1 oz. Ocean Spray White Cranberry Juice, 1 ½ oz. Ketel One Vodka, ½ oz.

Cointreau Liqueur and ¼ oz. St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur.

Add all to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake, shake, and shake some more, you want this drink ice cold. Pour into martini glass.

We like to float a couple of cranberry ice cubes (simply freeze a cranberry in small ice cube tray) for a great garnish.

Easy Fantasy Fudge 1 ½ sticks butter, 3 cups sugar, 2/3 cup evaporated milk, 12oz.

Milk chocolate chips, 1 jar (7oz.) Kraft Marshmallow Crème, 2 cups chopped pecans, 1 tsp. Vanilla. Grease a 9 X 13 dish. Mix butter, sugar and milk together in a 3qt. Saucepan and bring to boil on medium heat. Stir constantly and continue boiling for 4 minutes, or until candy thermometer reaches 234 degrees. Remove from heat, gradually stir in chocolate chips until melted, add remaining ingredients and mix well. Pour into greased pan and allow to cool at room temperature. Cut into squares.

Sugar Cookies One of Gayle’s greatest joys is baking sugar cookies with our Granddaughters Katie Lauren and Haley Claire. She perfected this tradition with our children Kimberly and David, when they were young.

Take 1 ½ cups powdered sugar, 1 cup softened butter, 1 tsp. vanilla, ½ tsp. almond extract and 1 egg. Mix these ingredients together, then add 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour, 1 tsp. baking soda, 1 tsp. crème of tartar. Mix well and then refrigerate for 2-3 hours.

Remove from refrigerator and roll out on a “floured” with confectioners’ sugar board or Silpat mat. Cut with your desired or seasonal cookie cutters. Place cookies on a Silpat mat on a cookie sheet and bake for 7-8 minutes at 375 degrees. Remove to a rack to cool.

Icing: 1/3 cup softened butter, 2 T. milk, 3 cups powdered

USQUEBAUGH (Gaelic), meaning: Water of Life Single Malt Scotch Whisky (SMSW) has been distilled in Scotland for over 600 years. To be classified as a true Single Malt, it must be distilled at a single distillery in Scotland, made with water and barley-no other grains, and the batch distillation must be performed in pot stills.

The water, peat and Scottish climate have a profound effect on the flavor of scotch. The SMSW is matured (aged) in oak casks or barrels for a minimum of three years. These casks have usually previously been filled with either bourbon, sherry or reused scotch whisky.

Distillers can give the flavor of their whisky a final twist by finishing it in a secondary, active cask that previously held wine.

It takes time to mature whisky and the longer time it remains in a cask, the more flavor is imparted by the oak. Old does not automatically equal good.

Speak with your bartender or a manager at one of the local liquor stores. Windmill Beverage, 3764 Wall Triana Hwy, graciously allowed me to browse their inventory and present you with several options: Glenmorangie 10 y/o, mid $50 range, medium body, flowery.

Balvenie Double Wood, 12 year old, mid $80 range, medium body, sherry. Talisker, 10 year old, low $100 range, full body/ complex, smoky, peppery. Lagavulin, 16 year old, mid $130 range, full body, sea spray, peat, smoky. Glenfiddich, 12 year old, mid $30 range, lean body, smooth, sweet, fresh.

Note the spelling “whisky” above because this is the legally recognized spelling everywhere in the world except Ireland and the USA. Also, body is hard to explain, but it basically refers to the way a whisky feels in your mouth. A whisky that seems to flood your mouth with flavor has a lot of body.

My favorite SMSW is Talisker 18, from the Isle of Skye, Scotland. It is a single malt which spent 18 years in casks which previously held bourbon and sherry.

You can smell (nose) the peat and smoke and taste the full bodied (complex) flavors of spice, peppery oak and toffee. You can pick up a little salty fresh sea breeze. This is a truly astonishing whisky. It is hard not to love Talisker 18, but you won’t love the price! ENJOY

My husband, Steve, and I have always instilled in our children the value of education and the understanding that it forms the foundation for their future.

We have watched both of our kids excel in the Madison City School system.

Witnessing first-hand how Madison City Schools has fostered an environment of academic and athletic excellence, civic immersion, and community Alice Lessmann participation is the main reason I am so excited about joining the Board of EduBoard of Education cation.

Member As a parent, I am eager to contribute Madison City Schools my experiences to help ensure the Madison City Schools retain and grow its outstanding reputation.

As a local business owner, I have continuously strived to develop a culture of trust and inclusiveness. I look forward to bringing that same attitude to the Board.

Building a leadership role is done by participation. Maintaining that is accomplished through example.

Now, to tell you a little about myself. I am a native of Huntsville, graduated from Butler High School, and earned my bachelor’s and master’s degree from UAH. I served 21 years in the U.S. Army National Guard and retired as an officer. I am a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP,) but changed careers after having children. My husband, Steve, and I own and operate Signalink Inc., and we have two children: Ben and Leah, both of whom attend Bob Jones High School.

I have been active on various boards and volunteer organizations (Leadership Greater Huntsville, Women’s Business Council, Women in Defense to name a few) and our family was recently named 2020 Madison Family of the Year for our community involvement. I have long been a volunteer, active with the PTA, and now see my board appointment as an extension of that service to the community.
