DISCOVER THE HIDDEN GEMS

These quiet corners of Wisconsin hold secrets—lush woodlands, fertile farmland, and a sense of community that transcends time. As you explore, you’ll find more than picturesque landscapes; you’ll discover a tapestry woven with tradition, celebration, and opportunity.

Every Tuesday evening throughout the summer, Friesland hosts a cherished tradition, a century-old band concert. Picture it, the sun dipping below the horizon, the air alive with melodies. The community band, weathered instruments in hand, conjures nostalgia as they play old-fashioned tunes. What pairs better with music than homemade pies? Local groups offer these delectable treats, served with a scoop of ice cream, as neighbors gather around the Village Square. It’s a slice of Americana, where time slows, and connections flourish.

On the 4th of July, Friesland ignites the sky with a spectacular fireworks display. Patriotic songs resonate, and families revel in an evening of wholesome fun. The air buzzes with anticipation, and children’s laughter mingles with the crackle of fireworks. It’s a celebration that binds generations—a reminder of unity and shared pride.

As summer wanes, Cambria steps into the spotlight. Park Days, held on the first weekend of August, kicks off with a softball tournament—a spirited clash of local talent. The parade winds through streets adorned with local talent and creatively designed floats. In the park, the aroma of a chicken BBQ mingles with laughter. Children dart between games, and live music weaves through the crowd. The Dump Bar now expanded and thriving for over 50 years awaits, promising great food, live tunes, and surprises. It is also host to the 22nd Annual Dump Run and Music Festival—an event that has fueled over $400,000 in charitable contributions over the years.

The heartbeat of these communities lies in their businesses. From cozy diners to bustling gas stations, they serve residents and visitors alike. We champion local commerce, knowing that each purchase sustains our shared prosperity. Amidst the rolling fields, agricultural giants thrive. ethanol plants hum, and one of

North America’s newest dry corn mills grinds away. Cambria’s canning facilities preserve flavors, while Friesland’s expansive warehouse echoes with industry. Alsum Farms and Produce, a beacon of growth, celebrates half a century—its vegetables nourishing the Midwest. And let’s not forget the wind turbines— majestic guardians harnessing renewable energy for Wisconsin.

The Cambria Friesland School—the Hilltoppers’ haven— educates students from pre-kindergarten to twelfth grade. With an 11:1 student-teacher ratio, personalized learning flourishes. Beyond textbooks, the school cultivates passions. Athletics, music, band, art, FFA, and industrial arts—each avenue sparks curiosity. Here, young minds find their rhythm, their purpose.

As the seasons shift, we extend an invitation. Come breathe the crisp air, wander our trails, and witness the sunsets that paint our skies. Attend our festivals, taste our pies, and dance to our music. And when you’re ready, explore the job opportunities—whether in trucking, farming, or innovation. Cambria and Friesland await, their beauty etched in every smile, every shared memory.

FALL RIVER Welcome

EXCELLENT FISHING

Fisherman will find carp, largemouth bass, crappie, bullhead and northern pike when they fish Lazy Lake all year long.

It started in 1845 with A.A. Brayton building his first house and store on a ridge on the crawfish river. That same year Brayton constructed a dam across the Crawfish that is still used to this day. It controls water flow and the level of Lazy Lake. What started with two buildings is now grown to a village of over 1800 residents and an industrial park of over 20 businesses and industries.

The Fall River School has created a connection to area businesses to prepare students for employment in the skilled trades. Fall River consistently scores above the state average on state testing at a higher rate than most area schools.

The Merrimac Ferry dates back to 1844, when Chester Mattson obtained a charter to provide ferry service at the present-day location. It was operational long before there was a marked road leading to or away from it. According to conflicting sources, Mattson charged either 35 cents or $1 to ferry a team and wagon across the river. The ferry was human-powered until around the turn of the century, when the first gasoline engine was added.

Enjoy many of the fun and exciting things in town and venture out to Lake Wisconsin-a 10,000 acre lake with 52 miles of shoreline that is surrounded by picturesque hills with views that are unbelievable. Enjoy the lake for boating, fishing, swimming and more! Stop at the sandbars or stop by one of the many restaurants on the lake.

In the winter, you will find downhill and cross country skiing, snowmobiling, snow tubing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, ice skating, and curling. Many places to book your next stayhotels, campgrounds, resorts and bed and breakfast.

In 1933 the toll was eliminated and The State of Wisconsin took over the ferry with the operation and maintenance now performed by the Columbia County Highway Department. The first ferry was Colsac, a wooden ferry that had a capacity of 8 cars. It was replaced by the Colsac II in 1963, with a capacity of twelve cars. Launched on May 16, 2003, the current Colsac III cost $2.2 million to build and carries 15 cars across the river linking both Columbia and Sauk counties. The Colsac name is cleverly derived from both county names.

Once you are on the ferry, get out of your car and take in the scenery of the Wisconsin River. Enjoy the gentle breeze during a crisp fall day as you take in all the wonderful colors along the trip across. We invite you to come to Columbia County and create your own memories on Wisconsin’s only Free Ferry Ride!

THE AMISH COMMUNITY

The Amish community is a rural community and somewhat different than what most urban people might expect. It is widespread over several townships and consists of small to medium-sized Amish farmsteads and individual homes, many with a small business on the property. Regardless of whether the person is engaged in farming or not...each home has at least a small barn for one or more horses and a grazing area.

On some rural roads in the community almost all the inhabitants will be Amish...in other areas the Amish will be intermingled with non-Amish, or “English”, homeowners or farmers. The Amish refer to all people not members of the Amish Community as “English”.

Amish business people operate many businesses that cater to the needs of the Amish community itself. Many of these businesses are of great interest to local and regional folks...including many visitors to the area...who wish to purchase goods made in the Amish tradition of craftsmanship and quality. These businesses are usually open Monday thru Wednesday, plus Friday and Saturday. Amish businesses are typically closed on Thursday and Sunday, though this varies from business to business. Thursdays special events such as weddings are held in the Amish Community and, of course, Sundays are honored as the Lord’s Day and a day of rest...with the exception of tending to the needs of the farm animals.

When you visit Columbia County’s Amish Community please make your trip a safe one. Remember, you may be driving on hilly, curvy and narrow township roads...and amongst horse drawn buggies. You must exercise greater caution!

• Drive slowly and cautiously when in the Amish Community

• Slow down when overtaking a horse drawn buggy or farm equipment

• Be patient, do not pass on hills

• When passing a buggy, pass slowly...you could scare the horse

• Watch for pedestrians in the rural areas

Additionally...the Amish People strongly prefer not to have photographs taken of them. Please respect their wishes and focus your photography on buildings, carriages and animals.

Explore ou BIKE TRAILS

It’s no secret that biking continues to grow in popularity across Wisconsin. Sharing a border with Dane County, the number one biking county in the state, Columbia County has naturally caught the biking bug from its neighbors. Outdoor recreation enthusiasts from all over will love our Columbia County Bike Loops, a system of fourteen routes that take you across our county and bring you up close to experiences only our county can provide.

Highlights abound along the roads of Columbia County offering bicyclists a wealth of natural views of wetlands, valleys, rivers, lakes, wildlife areas and so much more. You can explore John Muir Park, the boyhood home of the famous Naturalist. You can tour our county’s large Amish community and see life less complex.

Travel along the whirling shadows of wind turbines to the city of Columbus, the filming location of the Johnny Depp movie “Public Enemies.”

Tour the many historic sites of the city of Portage, its origin and importance in early commerce derived from the narrow strip of land separating the Wisconsin River and Fox River.

Summer concerts and pie socials await in smaller communities. Challenging hills and easy downhill slopes can transport you into some stunning views along the county. The loops, developed with the cooperation of the Columbia County Silent Sports Trails Committee and the Columbia County Highway Department, can be found online at https://portagewi.com/bike-columbia-county/
