DESIGN

PHILOSOPHY Designs should create awe or an element of surprise by silent story-telling, thus engaging the occupant or viewer in a conversation, developing scenarios that will lift people out of everyday and into an imaginative and creative mental world. - NIting Singh Thakur

The problem is to redesign an existing structure to fit the needs of a new work environment for Snap Inc. Headquarters. The existing building is a slab-on-grade warehouse made of steel frame construction. The 26,863 square foot building will accommodate 41 employees. Snap Inc.’s work environment consists of employees who implement creativity and collaboration on a daily basis. With a young client base, Snap Inc. must have an office environment that encourages creative thinking as well as suits each individual employee need.

Geared towards a younger generation, Aloft is looking to revamp their Charlotte location to attract local visitors and keep current guests returning. Because of it’s location in the Epicenter in Downtown Charlotte, guests have issues with noise as well lack of technology within the space. With a target audience of 20-30 year olds and guests who stay an average of 1-2 nights, the client needs a space that sets itself apart from local competitors within the area.

The first four floors of the Epicenter contain many restaurants, stores, and a night club. The remaining floors are home to Aloft itself. Guests enter the Epicenter through the south end of the building and must take a separate elevator up to the 5th floor to arrive in the lobby. 21

LOBBY

How will Aloft stand out amongst its competitors within the area? The design of the lobby is between the ceiling and ground. The ceiling is the focal point of the design and a piece that guests will remember after leaving. Constructed from wood, the ceiling also provides acoustical properties to accommodate for the lively bar scene for floors located directly above the lobby.
