CEP Newsletter - Movement & Migration

Page 1

Dear Students, We think of you always, and hope that you are well, safe, and healthy. It continues to be a difficult time for all of us, as it is for you, and we look forward to joining you again for (in Earl’s words from a recent letter) our party – that is, our CEP reunion as a class. We are so glad to send you our fifth newsletter, with the theme of “Movement and Migration.” The theme was collaboratively determined and we happily recalled the very first CEP reading group on the same topic, led by Pamela, Jelena, and Andy. This month, our group supported Luca and Ben’s planning of a Lantern course, which we will submit for DOC consideration in the coming weeks. John W., thank you for all your ideas with regard to how to use that system – we will be thinking over those suggestions. Madison, Sarah, Denise, Leila, Luca, Ben, and Melinda all worked on this edition of the newsletter. As always, we invite your responses to the contents, including your ideas for future themes! Please send them in with the included stamped envelopes. We have continued the following features: Artist Spotlight (thank you Luca), Student Spotlight (this month’s spotlight is on David B., thank you Denise), the Caption Contest (thank you Luca), and Sacred Space with Sensei Morris. We also continue Community Conversation (thank you for your responses to the last newsletter’s set of prompts!), columns from Ben, Sarah, Leila, and Melinda, and other writings from team members. Questions you asked about in the last two batches of letters: 1) Re-entry and 2) More Than Our Blues. As for re-entry, members of our team (including but not limited to Pam, Abbey, Sam, and Nelson) are putting together a re-entry guide that focuses on practical matters. We are ready to provide you with mentorship and feedback to continue work on your educations, and also connect you with resources for every day issues and relevant policies and laws. As for More Than Our Blues, Melinda is working hard to get the books back to the Amazon warehouse. In a frustrating piece of bureaucracy that you would appreciate, they initially sent out four books per order because of how the books were packaged (even though buyers were only paying for one). They said that they could not change this because they were shrinkwrapped together. Melinda had them sent back to us, at which point we discovered they were no longer shrink-wrapped! The Kindle edition, priced lower, remains available, and the paperback should be available again as soon as it hits the warehouse. As we mentioned last time, we decided that our February conference will be held entirely online. We included our Call for Papers (CFP) in this newsletter for each of you to review – there is still time to make substantial changes and to think about how you might want to contribute. We welcome your feedback. Please enjoy the material and know that you are always on our minds. All best wishes,

The CEP Team, far and wide
