PROJECTS PROFESSIONAL RESORT AT PAYOGAN Bali, 2016

This resort is situated on an elongated plot of land, stretching from the street to a small river near Ubud, Bali. Although street frontage is limited, there are two different access on the same street. The Neighborhood is dotted with small houses and pavilion buildings usually with central courtyard. While the building mass only consists of two stories, it optimize elongated shape of the site horizontally. The project aim to make lush tropical landscape as everyday experience on each room, therefore the two strips of hotel building is connected by such landscape. Each lower level room has access to courtyards which also act as buffer from main circulation corridor. Rooms on the upper level also share the same courtyard, getting visual connection with the sky and greeneries below. Other than organizing internal layout of the rooms, during the design phase I came up with the design of the public area. I also deal with the production of the technical drawings needed for construction bidding.

SINGGALANG HOUSE Bukittinggi, 2017

Bukittinggi is a town in the Province of West Sumatra. Natural feature like Mt. Singgalang and Sihanouk Canyon can be found nearby. Owned by local entrepreneur and his wife a Polish expatriate, the site is surrounded by paddy fields. The design intended to incorporate natural beauty into daily life, both in indoor, outdoor, and in between spaces. Idea of Corbussian Piloti not unlike in traditional malay houses is explored. It lifted part of the building, with lower level for living and dining area while sleeping quarter are above the pilotis. As a result, from living area almost whole site and landscape can be seen. Sheltered below the piloti, the open terrace had panoramic view to the surrounding fields and Mt. Singgalang.

In this project, my main responsibilities were studies of building forms and to develop the internal layout for the form that was choosen by principal architect. During the pre-construction phase I also worked alongside structural engineer in order to intergate the structural system into the overall built form.

The structural system is a raised box frame. Although this way of carrying the roof weight transfersally to the stilts have been used in many wooden traditional house of Indonesia, it is less common for concrete building. GROUND FLOOR PLAN

VASTENBERG FORT

Revitalization Competition, Surakarta 2015

It is common for Dutch colonial era fortresses to stood near royal palace and center plaza of old city in Java. The Vastenberg Fort itself is located in the center of Surakarta City, Central Java. White walls with itvs four bastion and a gate house is all that remain. This emptiness which resulted from years of neglect become somewhat interesting especially for events organizers. Many cultural event had taken place inside these walls.

DESIGN COMPETITIONS

The design acknowledge two different role to the city, to be a place of remembrance and to occasionally held festive event. Old buildings layout is revisited. Periphery buildings are light translucent boxes housing museum, gallery, and library. Below grade level added to contain supporting room for events and center plaza. Plaza is carved in the center, used to stage art and musical performances. The hollow earth will be filled with festive activity, while the ground level retain its contemplative atmosphere.

THEATRE'S HIGHLINE Bandung, 2016

This walkway is elevated above the intersection of Ahmad Yani and Baranang Siang Street, near Downtown of Bandung. The existing walkway crowded by hawker kiosks, are main access to reach an old theatre. The theatre goers attracted the street hawker, though initially form a symbiosis, too many hawkers cause traffic jam and hygiene issue, contribute to the decline of the theatre. The proposed design is an multi-function elevated walkway. The elevated spaces contain circulation space, retail for hawkers, and concourse for the theatre. Elevated walkway improve accessibility by allowing pedestrian to cross the street and reach the theatre safely. The concourse as the expansion of the theatre connect it with the city in a semi-open area that can be used as promotional space for the theatre.

Like art deco theatre building, the design make use of bold and dynamic forms. Strong horizontal lines suggest movement inside the building. While the use of translucent polycarbonate panels gives transparency. At noon the interior is filled with diffused light while at night it glows red and white above the street, not unlike the lights of passing traffic.

INCREMENTAL TYPE 36 Bandung, 2016

Indonesian Ministry of Public Housing held a design competition for landed house prototype emphasizing vernacular architecture adaptation. The location is in Bandung City with targeted user of lower middle class. Building area of 36 m2 is maximum if it is to be subsidized by government. Ideas for this projects arises from my research on mass housing, which condlude that because of user pragmatic consideration various modification usually happen. Main concerns are possibility of the house to expand and how to keep green area intact after that. Design intended to allow incremen-

tal growth of space, alongside growth of family. Government funding is limited, thus growth possibility shall be accommodated in design although with inhabitants own resources. The nucleus of the house contain rooms, living area, and utilities as well as precast stairwell thus allowing vertical expansion. In the future, user can add extra room in the upper floor. Use of available modular pre-cast concrete structure called “RISHA” allow the house to expand vertically. While non-bearing wall and windows material chosen according to the user’s means. 14

Affordable Housing Competition, Indonesian Ministry of Public Works role in team: main conceptor, presentation drawings 15

Located at the outskirt of Jakarta, this is a new development of landed housing in a suburb by a private developer. Typical of suburban housing in Jakarta, the developer planned it to be a gated community, due to paranoia about security. However, beyond the gate the design aim for an inclusive environment with public parks and greeneries accessible from each house. The site planning create spaces for interaction among residences and also with

nature. Most of house units face a cul de sac, which is safer for pedestrians and children to play. On the back of the houses there are small public park for each block while larger parks and two clubhouses shared by several blocks. The 3-types of house share some similarities while differing in plan and square area. There is a double-height space in the middle of the plan, which open to the garden through expanssive glass panes. In the 100 m2 house, this space connected the split levels which vi-

sually enlarge the compact dining space. Each house's street facade also cladded with dark asphalt shingles that act as backdrop of tree canopies and reduces glare from reflected on the front yard and the street. These cladded wall and roof with one material form a folded plane which shade the buildings and it's outdoor spaces.

BHAKTI GANVA 2014 Community Center for Hamlet of Pasirangling situated in sloped plot surrounded by villager’s houses and plantation. Through discussions with villagers and officials, it is decided that multi use public space is needed for gatherings, occasional classes and health examinations for children. To fund building construction, investment came both from University and various private companies after meetings with student representative. My role was in coordinating team of almost 50 students from architecture and civil engineering programme who carried out the design and construction phase. The 36 m2 building contained one multifunction room, lavatory, and storage room under pyramidal roof with two different inclinations reminiscent of sundanese traditional roof form. Many building materials came from producers donations such as aerated concrete blocks and concrete tiles for roof . Community member worked alongside skilled worker and also helped with material delivery to building site. Considering the tight budget (approx. 200 ₏v per sqm) volunteered workforce helped considerably.

SCHOOL PROJECTS

CONVENTION CENTRE Given site for this assignment is located on an highland north of Bandung City, sharing plot with an existing hotel. The hotel program going to be complemented with multifunction space both for conventions and ceremonies such as weddings. An art gallery is also needed according to project brief. Main idea is to create outdoor space embedded on existing topography as connector between the building and adjacent hotel. Along with hotel building, L shaped layout of convention and exhibition space enclosed and also shade a sunken plaza. Taking into consideration of cool micro-climate that allow year round use of outdoor spaces, the plaza allow people to gather for events such as music recital or a bazaar. Main construction method used is steel frame structure which can be finished quicker than concrete thus minimizing disturbance to the hotel customers. Arched steel truss span the main convention space and also exhibition space on shorter wing of the building.

SCHOOL PROJECTS

SOCIAL HOUSING Urban centers are composed of layers upon layers of histories. In many Indonesian cities, urban slums fill the gap left from the Dutch era, many are initially planned to be parks. The results are the kampung kota (urban village), which is unplanned, densely populated, and often with minimum infrastructure. The assignment call for an eight story subsidized apartment, in the middle of a kampung kota. The subsidy regulation limit the area to 36 m² per flat, intended to accommodate small families. The apartment consists of 2 block, each with 2 rows of flats facing each other but do not share a corridor. Two parallel corridor are separated 6 m, allowing a courtyard at the ground floor above the basement. Bridgarea which contains elevator and rows of flats enclose courtyard and void. The courtyard open only at one side toward a small river, thus avoiding wind tunnel effect. This layout allows light and gentle breeze to reach each flats entryway and public terraces, which act as a semi-outdoor living room.

PUBLIC LIBRARY

LATERAL SECTION

For this final studio assignment, I choose to design a Public Library. As a central library in city of Bandung, it had to respond both to the time and place. Unlike existing library, the new library role is not only limited to books but also e-book, DVD, and other digital database, reflecting our time of information abundance. Its location just across the City Hall, surrounded on three sides by pedestrian lane which was shaded by mature trees. The library composed of rectangular and curved mass connected by terraces and roof garden. The connecting terraces are stepped back from the street, with higher the levels stepped farther to bring light. Rectangular mass on the east, contain book collection surrounded by reading area which open mostly to the north, away from damaging heat. The terraces themself are also reading area, only in here book security checks are not necessary. Curved part houses cafe, media room, computers to access databases etc. Curved and column-less space create more dynamic and flexible use, to adapt with developing information tech. KINDERGARTEN : Main block with frame structure and other with massive walls compose this building. Housing learning activities in glazed main block allow children to observe garden and learn from nature. HOLIDAY HOUSE : The site is a sloped parcel in Northern Bandung. As a holiday house, both outdoor and indoor area are private spaces for hobbies such as gardening and painting. The plan is chevron shaped with most opening facing the backyard.

ART SPACE : Regulation for this corner site dictated one building side setbacked from the street while other directly connected to pedestrian lane. The former with ample outdoor space while the latter had easy access for passerby, making a gallery at street level more inviting. Two upper floor accommodate permanent collection and rentable studio for artists.
