MADELYN KNIGHT EDITOR-IN-CHIEF I’ve been staring at a blank Google Doc for the last hour thinking about just how I should phrase my goodbyes to Southport and The Journal. The truth is, I have no idea what I’m doing or what exactly I’m saying, so bear with me.

If I think way back to when I was a freshman walking through the doors, I remember a girl who was excited for a new experience, setting and opportunity. I, of course, had already mapped out the way to my first-period class, which was unfortunately math, to avoid any chance of confusion.

And now, four years later, I’m feeling all of these emotions again on a much grander scale, but now the map is nonexistent for the most part. While I am nervous for what lies ahead, I also can’t wait to see what the future holds for me.

However, it would be wrong to not remember Southport High School and how much it’s taught me in these last four years. I’ve grown in so many ways. It would be a bore to list them. I’ve tried to take every opportunity SHS has thrown at me whether it was in class or during an extracurricular, but the most amazing opportunity SHS has provided me with is the opportunity to connect with the people around me.

With no doubt, out of everything in high school, the thing I will miss the most is The Journal. My cousin got me all excited about joining The Journal staff when I was only in seventh grade. (Seventh grade me would think I am so cool). I am so happy I made the decision to join staff. For the past three years, it has been the highlight of my high school career. Especially this year. It kept me motivated to be at school every day, and it made me be the best version of myself.

Each year, The Journal family changes a little. But every year, it’s felt just like that-- a family. My sophomore year on staff I looked up to the juniors and seniors, and I hope as a senior I was a good leader for the staff this year.

I’ve had so much fun. From bonfires to our journalism convention trips to late production nights, I know that my time here at SHS will be remembered with these memories. It has been an absolute blast getting to know everyone on staff, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to be a leader on staff the last couple of years.

To every friend, teacher, administrator, and more, thank you for getting to know me. Thank you for providing me with opportunities, believing in me, pushing me to be my best. I am not very good at expressing it, but almost everyone I’ve interacted with at SHS has impacted me in some way, and all of the lessons, interactions and advice will follow me into my future.

In four years from now, I am sure my life will have changed in ways I cannot yet comprehend. But, these past four years of my life have prepared me for what comes next-- whatever that may be.

LYNDSAY VALADEZ ONLINE MANAGING EDITOR When I first started writing this, I was struggling -- not with what to write about or how to start it, but with the fact that I was writing it. Writing this blurb means that my time spent in this building is coming to an end.

My time here has been so precious. I’ve loved every second of it. even the moments i hated, I loved.

I’ve gone to quite a few games, run too many miles, planned a lot of dances, attended a lot of dances, watched our theater productions, stayed here past 8:00 p.m. for The Journal and, each night, slept for a significantly insufficient amount of time. All for good reason though. Through the four years of experiences inside and outside of SHS, I’ve become stronger, more aware, more time-conscious, a little smarter and not a bit taller.

From one mental breakdown to another, I’ve made it here. Soon, I’ll be on stage. Soon, I’ll forget I wrote this.

What won’t leave my mind are the memories I’ve created with my short time here.

I would like to give a few shoutouts, but to too many people to name them all. First of all, thank you to every single one of my teachers from the days before I entered the doors of SHS to the day I leave. Specifically, thank you to Mr. K. and Mrs. Matlock. You guys have kept me at least semi-sane. I would also like to thank my coaches, Mr. Fishel, Mr. Nelson and Miss Colbert. You guys are the reason for the semi in semi-sane because who in their right mind loves running. Apparently, I do.

One thing I do love a little more than running is my family. And to them I owe a huge thank you. And, of course, I have to thank the greatest father out there, God. Without you guys I would not be half the person I am.

Ivy Tech -English

Clara Oesterling I never fully believed the upperclassmen as a freshman when they told me to cherish my time here and that it goes by in the blink of an eye, but now I do. Some days felt like they’d never end and others feel like they never happened, but they were right.

Through it all, I’m thankful for everyone and everything that led me to who I am now and who I have yet to be- who we have yet to be.

Mr. K. taught me to advocate for what I believe in. Coach Fishel and coach Frank taught me to always push myself. Berghoff taught me anything can happen with copious amounts of caffeine. My English teachers gave me a love/ hate relationship with the language. But, I’m majoring in it, so thanks for that. Lenny showed me the importance of leadership amid various situations and surroundings. Ms. Shimp gave me peace of mind through my worst times.

Every interaction, every person, every passing period, every gloomy day- I am thankful for.

Maybe I’ll run for office. Maybe I’ll teach. Maybe I’ll be a reporter. Maybe I’ll get a PR job somewhere. Who knows. But, what I do know for sure is that I’ll miss this place.

Justin Chambers Looking back on my time here at SHS I can remember being lost going to almost every class and almost all sophomore year hobbling around on crutches almost. High school has taught me a lot of things. It has taught me how to live life and have fun and how to make really bad decisions and learn from them, but all of these things have really prepared me for the rest of my life. I am going to miss this place, but I am ready to get on and start the next chapter in my life. These last four years have flown by. High school has been a really crazy roller coaster ride of emotions, thoughts and actions. Just a little advice for you underclassmen: cherish every moment you can because when you are a senior the opportunity to do all the fun stuff dwindles down.

Nina Gojko My name is Nina Gojko. In my last year at SHS, I was the staff artist and writer for the satire section of The Journal. High school isn’t an easy time for anyone and everyone has their own unique set of challenges to deal with. Losing friends, gaining them, learning more about yourself and how to prepare for the big crazy world out there. I’ve learned a lot throughout high school. I’ve made a lot of mistakes. I’m still learning and making mistakes, and that’s just a fact of life. High school hasn’t been the the best time of my life but it’s certainly been transformative. As my school career comes to a close, I’m in a much different place than I thought I’d be going into my first day of freshman year. That’s a bummer but also a blessing. I plan to work for a few years to get emotionally and financially ready to attend college. I’m not sure which school I’ll attend but I’m sure my major will be art related, maybe graphic design or illustration.

I’m very thankful for the support I’ve had from teachers and peers while at SHS.

Noah Thomas The four years that I have spent at SHS have been some of the best and most developing years of my life.

I can easily say that I am an entirely new person than before stepping through those doors on the first day of freshman year. I have learned so many things through the friendships I’ve made, friendships I’ve lost, classes I’ve taken, memories I’ve created and many other aspects that I attribute to making me the person that I am today. Although my time at SHS has been hard in some respects, the clubs and teams I was a part of, the many times I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone, and the people I have connected with along the way made it well worth it, and, looking back, I wouldn’t want my high school experience to have been anywhere else. Being a cardinal is something that I refuse to just give up after I graduate. It is truly a lifestyle and I will hold onto these memories forever.

I loved my time here. I loved the atmosphere of unity at each and every school game, play, dance or any event where everyone put their differences aside and we supported each other and had fun in the most optimal ways. I loved the only two years I was involved in a sport at SHS, where although I didn’t continue playing, I made some of my favorite memories and learned some of the most important traits about myself. I loved every class I took no matter what my grade was in it. I loved the supportive teachers. I loved the countless hours in The Journal room, where I learned to handle stress and overcome obstacles most students don’t even get the honor to face. I loved the relationships that were built with the friends who stayed by my side all four years when we were all just trying to figure ourselves out, and it may have been messy at times, but these remarkable people are a giant reason why these four years were so great. Love is a strong word, but an understatement of how I feel about SHS and the people in it. I’m too emotional to say goodbye, so I’ll just say thank you. Thank you for these amazing memories and experiences that I loved and will never EVER forget.

I know it’s cliche, but time really does fly. It seems like yesterday I was a little 14-year-old boy, and now I am a young adult. SHS has been the place where I’ve grown up, and all I truly have to say is thank you. To all the friends that I’ve made and have helped make my time here great, thank you. To all the teachers that have taught me lessons both inside and outside of the classroom, thank you. Perhaps most of all, I’d like to thank all my coaches and teammates and the entire Journal staff. Through my years playing basketball and running track, my teammates became my brothers and my coaches became friends and mentors, who helped shape me into who I am today. Room 400, where all The Journal magic happens, became my home. Everyone there helped to take the stress that comes with producing this magazine away and made every minute enjoyable. Plus, I got the honor of writing sports stories and columns for all of you guys, so thank you to all of you that read them. As sad as I am to leave SHS, I’m equally excited to start my adventure at Indiana University to see where this journalism thing takes me, and also excited to see what the future has in store for all of us who are about to walk the stage. We got this Cards.

When I first walked through the doors of SHS four years ago as a freshman, I really had no idea what was in store for me over the next four long years that stretched out ahead. However, now that my time at this school is coming to a close, I really can’t help but look back on these four years and be satisfied with what I’ll be leaving with. I could honestly go on forever about all the lessons high school has taught me and proceed to get all mushy and sentimental about leaving, but I won’t put anyone through that. In a nutshell, I’ve made and established so many incredible memories and friendships throughout my time here and I’m so so thankful for everything I was able to be apart of and everyone I was able to meet. To all my amazing family and friends, thank you. To all the incredible teammates and coaches I’ve had over the years, thank you. To every teacher that had to have me in their first period class, thank you for putting up with me walking into class late here and there.. or every day. Being a Southport Cardinal really is something special, and I encourage everyone to cherish and make the most out of their time at this school while they can. Time really does fly, so make the most out of the time you’re given.

Yasmin McClellan Throughout my time at SHS, I have experienced both my best and my worst memories as well as some of my most valuable life lessons. All those experiences have shaped me into the person I am today, and I can truly say that I am thankful for everything. Being involved with RDM, softball, orchestra, Cardinal Compass, NHS and The Journal have all introduced me to so many new people that I never thought I’d share a conversation with.

Getting to know so many diverse people really helped me to become more understanding of different cultures, views and perspectives. The biggest thing that I’ve learned, especially from being the foreign language editor, is that everyone has a story and that story is worth sharing. I’ve had my fair share of laughs within the doors of SHS whether they were because of the hilarious portraits of people in the computer lab or the awkward laughs when none of your friends get the same answers as you on a test. My biggest advice to everyone is to always do the right thing even if everyone makes you feel that you are wrong. And remember, as always, go Cards!

DePauw University - Neuroscience and Spanish

Tabatha Fitzgerald The book of my life is far from over, but this short yet impactful chapter is coming to an end. As I reflect on my time in high school I can’t help but think that it’s the little moments that have shaped me the most. From all the laughs shared with friends, meeting my best friend, all of the school activities, such as newspaper and the dance team, I’ve attended and been a part of, all of the moments spent with family, to figuring out what I wanted to do with the rest of my life and starting to do something about it. As I’ve heard countless family members and past graduates say, this is a time of your life that you will never get back and everything will be different after you walk across the stage. I can happily say that I am leaving high school with no regrets and am happy about the person I have become. Although I may never speak or see some of the people from high school again, I am confident that the memories I have made while at Southport will last a lifetime.

Emma Sprague University of Indianapolis Looking back on the last few years at SHS is honestly - Criminal Justice insane. I remember walking through the front doors

literally trembling because I wasn’t comfortable with who I was. From playing volleyball, to writing for the Journal, to playing the violin in the orchestra, to playing piano in marching band and indoor percussion it’s very easy to see how I broke out of my shell. I can honestly say for the first time in a long time I’m very happy with how things are going. I’d just like to extend a very special thank you to all of my friends and teachers that have stuck by my side through all of the hard times. I’ve always been fascinated with the criminal justice field and the amazing and courageous people that are a part of it. I can’t wait to follow in their footsteps and continue my academic journey at the University of Indianapolis this fall. Go Greyhounds!

Logan Zrebeic Farewell! Adios! Hasta la vista!

These past four years here at SHS have been the best. There are a lot of things that I have learned, which I could go on and on about, but I don’t want to. Instead, I want to give thanks to the people that have helped me. Thank you to Mr. K, a person who always has an open ear and always pushes to get the best from me. Thank you to Mr. Jones for being the coolest teacher and coach. Thank you to all my friends and family because I wouldn’t be here without them. Finally, thank you to Google and Quizlet. I probably wouldn’t have passed some quizzes and tests without you. And for one last time, Deuces!

Dylan Torres Wow. Just wow. I mean, what else is there to say, to express, to exclaim?! But what is all the wowing specifically about? Well, I’ll tell you: It’s about the friends I’ve made and the friends I’ve reconnected with, the after-school production night jokes that had me falling to my knees and gasping for air, the opportunity to learn and understand journalistic and general writing techniques and, of course, the essential comma rules.

Let me not also forget to mention the newspaper-related events, like being part of “The Journal” float or feasting during “The Journal” Christmas party, that have left a heartfelt impression on me from my short time spent on staff. A lot has happened during just one year in newspaper, and I wish I could stay longer, and though I will move on from writing for “The Journal,” there will be another story for next reporter to write.
