LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Issue 5 of The Journal was all about stepping out of comfort zones. From four new reporters writing their first stories to seasoned editors trying something new, our staff was tackling big projects throughout the production cycle.

But there are also challenges to new experiences. Centerfold, for example, was difficult to approach in multiple aspects.

“Issue 5 of The We knew we wanted to do a story on the Journal was all environment, but we didn’t want to write about stepping something cliche. I’m super proud that our out of comfort Features crew decided to take on a fresh angle, even if it was difficult to conceptualize zones.” in the early stages. I suggest really taking the time to read through the story they produced -- everyone has the opportunity to learn something from the suggestions provided by environmental experts Jim Poyser and Tatjana Rebelle. Check out page 17 for more information.

It’s through challenging angles like our cover story that we grow and learn. Everywhere I looked, I saw people sharpening their journalistic skills this issue. Stay tuned throughout the semester for our continued coverage of SHS, and remember to visit The Journal Rewired for breaking stories.

Cracking down Administration implements a new disciplinary regulation for illegal substances found on school grounds

ccording to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, teen vaping and marijuana usage rates have increased in the past few years along with the usage of other illicit drugs, such as opioids and other medicines. It is becoming more common to see these drugs around high schools.

The administration at SHS has been taking more steps to combat this issue throughout the building.

Since the beginning of

the second semester of the 2019-2020 school year, students found with illegal substances on campus will be handed a $150 ticket, as opposed to being suspended.

Violations of this new policy can possibly lead to criminal charges, arrest warrants and even appearances in court.

“This seems to be the most effective way of dealing with illegal substances and really cracking down on it,” Officer Luke Quinlan said.

According to Quinlan,

SHS hasn’t caught too many students with illegal substances, but this new policy is a precaution to keep as much out as possible.

If a student wants to challenge the ticket, the ticket will contain information about contacting an attorney.

According to success coach T.J. Lovejoy, the substances that schools have the most trouble with are marijuanna and tobacco. This new policy is meant to target tobacco products that are commonly

found in a lot of vaping devices, and it places stronger consequences on students caught with these substances.

“After a couple offenses, students can receive suspension or expulsion, depending on the offense,” Lovejoy said.

Students have differing opinions about the new policy and what the school is doing to keep drugs out.

According to junior Cooper Heaton, this new regulation could be very beneficial in preventing illegal substances in the building. He doesn’t think the school is necessarily doing enough to reduce this issue, but he believes it is a step in the right direction.

“I think that’s probably a good thing because it’ll make it less likely that people will bring illegal substances to school, and it will reduce the amount circulating,” Heaton said.

On the other hand, some students seem to think there is still a long way to go.

“I think they should pay more attention to kids and try monitoring bathrooms to see what kids bring into schools,” junior Ah’Maiya Martin said.

Getting caught with contraband can result in various levels of potential punishments students will receive. If students are caught with tobacco, they will receive either a ticket or a ticket and a suspension. If marijuana or products containing marijuana are found, the consequences are much greater. According to Quinlan, marijuana will lead to an arrest and the student being taken off of school grounds.

In addition, the ignoring of a ticket can lead to getting a driver's license taken away.

Failure to pay a ticket will result in serious consequences from authorities.

"I think the fine of the ticket is awesome,” Lovejoy said. “I think it’s going to really curb the issue a lot.”

Seasons of Snowcoming Students and teachers prepare for upcoming winter dance

he SHS winter dance is less than a month away, and teachers and students have been planning for weeks. Snowcoming will take place on Feb. 15 from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. It will be semiformal, and the theme of the dance this year is “Cardinal Forecast,” centering around the four seasons.

“I think that what we’ve found is that no matter what we do, how we do the dance, everyone is excited to have a dance in the winter,” student council sponsor Joe Leonard said. “Everyone seems to have a good time and look forward to it.”

The dance has been informal for the past two years, as the Booster Club tried to line the date of the dance up with a basketball game the same night so students could wear what they wore to the game. This year, the schedule did not align, so the Booster Club decided to keep it semi-formal.

“I'm excited to do semiformal again,” senior and student council member Brynna Reynolds said. “I feel like more people get into that 6 News

than they did the casual.”

The hallway decorating competition is a tradition of the week leading up to Snowcoming. Each class is assigned specific school sports or extracurricular activities to feature, and students from the respective classes are responsible for decorating their designated hallway.

Seniors have the main “fishbowl” hallway, juniors have the math hallway, sophomores have the social studies hallway, and freshmen have the science hallway.

Decorating will start after school on Friday, Feb. 7 and continue on Saturday, Feb. 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., later followed by judging.

For the second year in a row, there will also be a school spirit competition for students during spirit week. At the end of the week, each class will have one student winner who collects the most points, but the top two seniors will be named Mr. and Miss Cardinal at the dance.

Mariah Murillo said. “Of course it was fun winning, but I did meet a lot of new teachers doing it.”

In order to be entered to compete, teachers will nominate specific students, and those students will receive a slip of paper they have to get signed by teachers for things they do throughout the week.

Students can earn up to as many points as they want per day, and there are three different criteria that students can earn points from: academics, spirit and service.

“We want to empower the students, so it’s based on points,” Booster Club sponsor Stacey Matlock said. “We want a well-rounded student, so it's not just academics, it’s (also) volunteering and spirit.”

Tickets for the dance will start being sold on Monday, Feb. 10 at $5 each.

"I'm looking forward to students having a good time and for students to enjoy themselves during the week…," Matlock said. "I'm excited to see all the students get involved for Snowcoming and do service."

understanding of the villain, an understanding that is not shown in typical superhero movies.

As the plot further develops within the film, the audience finds itself engrossed in Joker and his life, along with the music used to set a depressing, gloomy and heartbreaking mood found throughout the movie. It is incredible how

Joker’s character changes so drastically throughout the movie, and how the audience can find themselves feeling like they are in the scene, and not just watching from a screen.

With the mesmerizing plot and Phoenix’s style of acting and the music, the audience is truly amazed and immersed by the film “Joker.”

"Little Women" "Once Upon a Time In Hollywood"

By Brianna Henry, Entertainment Editor Quentin Tarantino has created many movies to challenge our expectations of film in different ways. In “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Tarantino plays with new elements that we haven’t seen from him before.

In the film, I find Tarantino distracting the audience from stunt double Cliff Booth, played by Brad Pitt, with tangential stories to distract from the “main story.” I find this appealing because it shows the different lives of people who seem pointless to anything a normal film storyline would be trying to focus on.

You see Tarantino playing with sound throughout the movie in ways he hadn’t done in his other films. The source of the sound is always known, creating an immersive experience. The film also includes historical moments, like its focus on the Manson family murders.

This film was a refresher from his other films. The tamer cinematography made the film stand out from his normal gimmick style. Tarantino made a complex film seem so simple, yet he completely immersed you in Hollywood in the ‘60s.

By Haley Miller, Editor-in-Chief For all viewers hoping for a well-conceived, sufficiently feminist and wonderfully artistic adaptation of a classic, “Little Women” is the perfect cozy movie to take in this winter.

Navigating the highs and lows of the March family, the film does an excellent job of making the seemingly unrelatable, antiquated plot and characters feel personal for the 21st century viewer. Jo March, portrayed by Saoirse Ronan, was particularly recognizable.

Ronan was fantastic at demonstrating the fiery, independent, clever and creative essences of Jo’s personality.

The aesthetic areas of “Little Women” hold up as well. The costumes were rich and enchanting, and the New England scenery was, unsurprisingly, superb. To convey the idea that the story was alternating between two different timelines, the film went back and forth between a lush, saturated color palette to represent the past and a bleak, gray palette for the future, which I thought was a little contrived.

Nonetheless, I appreciated some form of distinction because the plot would have been difficult to follow otherwise.

Regardless of small gaffes here and there, “Little Women” gave its audience everything it could want in a movie adaptation. The film had a dream cast, thoughtfully considered screenplay and lovely cinematography. It was truly a delight to watch.

"Marriage Story"

By Rachel Bayler, Print Managing Editor The topic of divorce is a difficult one to approach and properly depict, but at times it is done so masterfully that it can’t go unnoticed. Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” does just that. It is the story of the painful divorce of Charlie and Nicole Barber, a stage director and actress played by Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson respectively. Simultaneously heartbreaking and heartwarming, it portrays the harsh realities of what “family” means in the face of a broken marriage and dives into just how far love will go during the darkest points in relationships. Set in busy New York City and scenic Los Angeles, Baumbach blends two stories of loss into one journey of growth and acceptance.

There’s something about James Taylor that just automatically soothes me whenever I listen to him sing. He has a very soft, tender, acoustic sound that immediately makes me think of the warm summer sun and traveling through the mountains. I wouldn’t call myself a major fan by any means, seeing as I only listen to about three of his songs, and even then I have to be in a specific mood to really enjoy them. But something about his music and poetic lyrics makes me want to simply sigh, sit back and enjoy the view of life around me.

My favorite song of his by far is “Fire and Rain.” Released in 1970 at a turbulent time in his life during a tough battle with drug addiction and the death of a friend, it’s a song of reflection. He looks back on his life and the lives of his friends, and when I listen to it, I just can’t stop myself from joining in on the self-reflection.

It may be about his own life and struggles, but it resonates across individual experiences.

I can’t think of a better song for the end of the first month of the year. Every

Music ‘n Musings January, hopeful souls make New Year’s resolutions, planning on making changes in the next year in order to somehow improve.

Inevitably, the majority of these resolutions fall through by the end of the month, but I still consider January the month of self-improvement, where one reflects on what did or didn’t work in the past year and tries to bring into the new year only the things that will encourage success.

2019 was definitely a year of growth for me. Every year has highs and lows, but it feels like last year was especially meant to foster positive strengthening, whether it was emotionally, mentally or spiritually.

For the longest time, I think I was “walking my mind to an easy time,” never really trying too hard to grow or step outside of my comfort zone because it was just that: comfortable. But time waits

for no man, and as Taylor so beautifully puts it, “Lord knows, when the cold wind blows, it’ll turn your head around.” That “cold wind” really knocked some sense into me, so I really tried to work on myself and do some introspection so that I could become a better, more wellrounded person by December.

“I’ve seen fire and I’ve seen rain,” each in their own turn, but I sincerely think that I’m better for it. People, events and experiences from last year have all brought me up to this point, and I hope to improve on this growth in 2020.

“There’s just a few things coming my way this time around” this year, and it can be the same way for everyone.

Change is scary, but it’s a necessary evil. This is especially important to keep in mind during high school, where it feels like everything is changing. Maturing and intentionally trying to become a better person is difficult, but with personal growth comes a positive outlook. There may be a little fire and rain along the way, but it’s all worth it. Make 2020 the year of personal growth.

My hair, my choice

More people should encourage destimatizing body hair

By Elizabeth Valadez, Features Editor I grew up thinking that my body was gross. Not because of the extra fat on it or the weird pimples, but simply because of the hair that grew on me. Little 9-year-old me started to hate my legs when I was only in the third grade because I realized I had some pretty dark and long hair on them. It’s funny that at such a young age I could develop so much hatred for something completely natural that I had no control over.

I hated this part of me, though, because it’s been instilled in me since before I can remember that body hair is wrong, gross and should be removed at all costs. I’ve been taught that men can have any amount of body hair they’d like, but women can’t. These ideals of body hair and its removal have plagued our world. I’m not here to tell anyone what to do with their body or the hair that grows on it. But we have to be more conscious of why we’re shaving or waxing, rather than doing it because it’s the sexist societal standard in place.

Body hair is natural.

Everyone has it. So why isn’t it viewed the same way across the board? If women have an amount of body hair that’s deemed excessive, they are labeled as gross and unhygienic. But if a man has the same amount, they’re perfectly normal.

I now couldn’t care less about the hair that’s on my body. I’ve grown a lot since

third grade and have seen the unfair treatment of women over something so simple.

One woman told Helathline, a general health guide, that “No one has body hair in the media. You grow up thinking that’s normal and easily attainable.” Not only have I experienced this lack of representation of body hair in the media, I’ve also been told by plenty of people in my life that not shaving for weeks or even months is disgusting.

But at this point, I’ve learned to just let it go.

If we would all stop letting society dictate our lifestyle, this would not be an issue. We have to stop telling ourselves that being all natural is wrong.

No one tells vegans that they’re disgusting for eating the healthiest of foods, so why am I disgusting if I don’t shave for a couple weeks?

Trust me, I’m no stranger to hair removal. I love the feeling of having smooth legs and underarms. I recently used Nair and was ridiculed for that too. I’ve been told having hair is wrong, but apparently so is removing it, depending on the method. It’s like no matter what I do, there will always be this terrible stigma around the hair on my body.

And there’s this stigma around being true to yourself, too, and body hair plays a role in that. People just can’t be happy when other people are living their best lives. I can live my best life with no hair on me other than my head and also still live that best life

I remember shaving for the first time in fourth grade,because I felt like a caveman. Honestly, no childhood experience felt as freeing as that one. Something so simple made me just a little happier about the body I was in. But now I’ve grown, and both ends of the body hair spectrum can make me just a little happier, depending on my mood or the season, whatever the case may be.

Pressing hard on a razor will give you a closer shave.

Waxing and shaving cannot cause ingrown hairs.

Shaving can leave the skin dry and flaky.

It is OK to shave without water.

Fandom frenzy

Fan ‘ships’ should have boundaries

Within books, TV shows or movies, it seems there are always those two characters who have a lot of chemistry.

Naturally, fans of the show root for them to get together.

Characters such as Lance and Keith from “Voltron: Legendary Defenders” or Rey and Kylo from “Star Wars” are prime examples of this.

However, when the fans voice their opinions on social media, some go too far. By too far, I mean that they threaten the producers, writers or actors in defense of their “ship,” or the relationship they desire to see played out.

This practice isn’t right and should end immediately.

Although some fans believe they’re being reasonable by using threats, it causes distress within the fandom and shouldn’t continue by any means, especially since the threats are often stupid, unreasonable and don’t get the points across efficently.

Fandoms, groups of fans of the same media form, create a place for people of common interests to explore. So when the fandom starts to threaten people, it is no longer safe.

Although some threats are harmless, fandoms have gone to the point of blackmailing producers and causing developers to have their jobs at risk.

One of these fandoms is “Voltron: Legendary

Defenders.” The fandom quickly became toxic when its main “ship” wasn’t actually put into the show. According to SyFy Wire, one Tumblr user refused to take down leaked photos. These photos were unauthorized, as they held scenes for future episodes.

The user claimed that the photos would be taken down under one condition. This condition was that “Klance,” the ship was between the characters Lance and Keith be made canon.

This leakage of photos, which turned to blackmail, along with many other smaller threats, created tension in the Voltron fandom. To me, threats are completely unnecessary for dealing with fictional relationships of any kind. I love fictional ships just as much as anyone, but breaching the creators’ privacy and then proceeding to threaten them is nauseating.

A tweet from Bex TaylorKlaus, the voice actor of the character Pidge Gunderson from Voltron, spoke out on July 25. Taylor-Klaus openly expressed her anger about the shipping threats. If the voice actors have to speak out, the fandom has reached the toxic point.

Another example of fans becoming toxic is from the “Star Wars” fandom. “Star Wars” has a different type of toxicity within the fans, caused by another “ship,” in this case, “Reylo.” This ship between Kylo Ren and Rey was considered abusive by many fans due to Kylo’s villain archetype. These characters are not real, yet fans have gone as far as to threaten others over them.

It makes no sense to me since there are alternative actions that can be taken.

Fanfiction, for example, is an alternative, giving the writer room to create scenarios that wouldn’t normally happen.

There are hundreds of fanfictions to explore.

I am disgusted at how far fans have gone to try and secure a relationship starting, continuing or ending purely for the benefit of their “ships.” Fandom toxicity is a large problem, no matter the level of extremity. To ensure a safe space for fans, actors and creators, the toxicity must stop.

Female directors should be nominated for the Oscars The nominees for the 2020 Academy Award for Best Picture represent the best films of 2019. Most of the nominated films contain diverse cast and crew, but while this category may embrace gender diversity, the Best Director category is lacking in that area. Compared with the people nominated for Best Picture or Best International Feature Film, the Best Director category is staggeringly male.

We, The Journal, believe more women should have been nominated in the Best Director category of the 2020 Academy Awards, and the Academy should prioritize including female directors in the future.

The 2020 nominees for Best Director include Bong Joonho, Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Todd Phillips and Sam Mendes, all of whom have movies up for Best Picture. But Greta Gerwig, whose film “Little Women” is also up for Best Picture, and Tamara Kotevska, whose film “Honeyland” is nominated for Best International Feature Film, seem to not have been considered to compete for the award. If these women are able to create such great films on par

with their male peers in a way that they are potential winners of Best Picture, Gerwig or Kotevska should have received a Best Director nomination.

In the 90 years since the first Academy Awards in 1929, there have only been five women nominated for Best Director: Lina Wertmüller (1976), June Campion (1993), Sofia Coppola (2003), Kathryn Bigelow (2009) and Greta Gerwig (2017).

Bigelow is the only female nominee that has won the award. While the number of nominations has started to increase since 2000, the progress is still extremely slow and does not reflect the presence of female directors.

Perhaps there is a deeper reason for the lack of focus on women in the director’s chair.

The Academy Awards are sponsored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, also known as The Academy, an invitation-only organization with around 8,000 members of the film industry, according to their website.

that Academy voters were nearly 94% white and around 77% male. With a majority white-male demographic, the female perspective within the organization’s membership is likely overlooked.

According to the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative Analysis published in January 2020, data from the website Metacritic reveals that female directors surpass male directors in film scores, 55.8 to 54.2. If female directors are receiving similar if not more positive critical reviews compared to male directors, their peers within The Academy should recognize that and hold them up to the same critical review as male directors when deciding the ballot for Best Director.

We, The Journal, hope that the 2021 Academy Award nominees for Best Director represent people from all genders. Members of the Academy should maintain open minds and weigh the work of male and female directors equally, in turn giving female directors the recognition they deserve. Representation leads to greater advances in the pursuit of equality.

To the test The Journal investigates emvironmental sustainability at SHS

rinking from plastic straws, driving a car, throwing away plastic water bottles, using plastic bags at the grocery store and charging electronic devices overnight are all things that humans do that harm the environment.

According to Carbon Brief, a U.K.- based website specializing in promoting the understanding of climate change, human emissions and activities are responsible for nearly 100% of global warming since 1950.

Aware of the impact humans have on the environment, The Journal wanted to put SHS up to the test over its sustainability.

According to science teacher Rachel Brunsell, sustainability is living in a way that there are enough resources for the present, but also for the future. She views it not just as a practice, but as a way of life.

Because human activity is largely responsible for climate change, we, The Journal, wanted to see how a building where more than 2,000 students and hundreds of teachers attend daily was impacting the environment and its future.

“We know how impactful schools can be on the environment,” Haley Miller, Editor-in-Chief of The Journal, said. “The Journal

decided to investigate this in terms of Southport so that we could let our students know exactly how much their school was contributing to a carbon footprint and what their school could be doing.”

In order to test SHS’s sustainability, we turned to Jim Poyser and Tatjana Rebelle, the Executive Director and Resilient Schools Coordinator respectively at Earth Charter Indiana, a nonprofit organization that focuses on building principles for a sustainable environment.

To prepare to test the school’s sustainability, The Journal received permission from the school’s

administrators for Poyser and Rebelle to perform a walkthrough. They visited the school during iPass on Jan. 16 and talked us through everything that they observed in order to tell us if SHS is going down the right environmental path.

The positives A sustainable switch that Perry Township made recently was installing LED lights in each building in the district. This change is complete at SHS, and the LEDs have been installed in the hallways, classrooms and parking lots.

“The LED lights take far less energy than the traditional lighting options, so that utilizes less energy and is a plus to the electricity bill,” Poyser said.

Though aware that on the day of the walkthrough many lights weren’t being used because of presentations during iPass, Poyser still pointed out that the lack of light impressed him. He says classrooms with the lights off at any time of the day deserve a “grade A” because of the energy they are preserving.

Poyser also noted that the amount of light being let into the main hallway, the fishbowl, results in less energy use. The use of light sensors in the labs, bathrooms and offices throughout the school also helps to prevent wasting energy by leaving lights on.

In addition to SHS’s energy-friendly approach to lighting, Poyser was impressed by the food bins in the cafeteria for students to place uneaten items in.

The items put in these bins are saved for the after-school lunches that the cafeteria offers or are donated to different food banks. Poyser and Rebelle say that the Elkay water fountains, water fountains with water bottle filling stations, are also a

great way to move toward sustainability because they have accounted for more than 500,000 refills, allowing for less plastic waste.

Overall, Poyser and Rebelle pointed out many things that the school is doing well.

“I was extremely impressed,” Rebelle said. “You guys seem, comparatively to a lot of the other schools I've gone into, already ahead of the game with a lot of things.”

Areas for improvement Poyser offered The Journal some suggestions about ways to increase the sustainability of SHS. One suggestion that Poyser gave was the idea of straying away from styrofoam lunch trays completely and replacing the plastic silverware with metal silverware.

According to Children’s Environmental Health

Network, the production of styrofoam releases over 50 chemical byproducts that then contaminate the air and overall community.

SHS has slowly made an effort to switch from almost all styrofoam lunch trays to plastic reusable trays in the lunch lines.

According to Knight, plastic hasn’t completely replaced styrofoam because the cafeteria staff would have to wash plastic lunch trays in between the three lunch periods. Knight, though, says he still feels like the change has reduced the amount of overall waste.

“The amount of trash we were throwing away plus the amount of styrofoam we were throwing away was very substantial,” Principal Brian Knight said.

Both Poyser and Knight acknowledge the fact that switching over to metal silverware could be

challenging.

The entire cafeteria staff would have to get on board and be willing to possibly work longer or change their shift schedules to wash more dishes.

Another suggestion Poyser made was to implement a food waste program. Although there are food bins for uneaten items in the cafeteria, he says that the leftover waste from the school still sits in landfills and creates methane gas. He suggests bringing in a professional composter to the school to minimize this effect.

Poyser says the walkthrough was not meant to harshly judge what SHS is doing but to simply encourage the school to continue taking sustainable measures and improving in other areas where they were lacking. The negative impact a school can have on the environment adds up over time. Rebelle says that if schools start changing their

ways, it will spark change in their community, too.

“This is a school, and the theory of school is education,” Rebelle said. “And if you can get to have climate change and environmental justice and that kind of thing talked about in schools, that will bleed into the neighborhood and into the community."

What the district is doing According to Perry Township’s Director of Facilities, Kirby Schott, the district is wrapping up the LED conversion. Over 30,000 light fixtures have been completely swapped or retrofitted in the district. Due to the high cost of replacing the lights in those areas, this statistic excludes the facilities for football, soccer, softball and baseball. Schott says the saving benefits of switching the lights in the hallways, classrooms and parking lots will come much quicker than possible benefits of placing LED lights in the sports areas.

Solar panels, like LED lights, were a topic of school board conversation. When it comes to solar panels for Perry Township, Schott says that it is a matter of where to put them and how to plan for its initial financial impact.

“We have explored solar some,” Schott wrote in an email interview with The Journal. “Here in Indiana,

These water fountains have water bottle filling stations. the incentives offered to both consumers and energy providers from the state aren’t great, so the initial costs are still pretty significant.”

Schott says that in 2019, IPL chose Perry Township to be a part of a program called CLEAResult, which coincided with the LED lights project. They did a monthly analysis of opportunities for the district to be more energy efficient. The program was offered to the township at no cost and offered some financial incentives based on the township’s energy usage.

According to Schott, the more energy the district saves, the more money they get back. However, Schott hasn’t received exact data on this project just yet.

“While we don’t have perfect data yet, I can tell you we are headed in the right direction,” Schott wrote.

What other schools are doing Just as SHS and Perry Township have made several changes to be more sustainable for the Earth, other schools have been making efforts to reduce their carbon footprints as well.

Hamilton Southeastern Schools were put to the test by Bob Rice, the school district’s Energy Manager.

Inspired by IUPUI’s

similar challenge with their dorms, Rice proposed “Watt Watchers.” This competition challenged each of the 23 buildings in the district to decrease their usage of watts of energy compared to the previous year. Each month, Rice sent out a newsletter describing ways to cut down on energy to help schools move forward in the competition. A regular trophy that was transformed by spraypaint and a lightbulb turned into the prize for winning Watt Watchers.

Fishers High School English teacher Eduardo Torres says a big change made districtwide was switching to all reusable utensils in the cafeteria at the start of the Watt Watchers challenge. Torres teaches an English leadership course and flipped the reusables and their related issues into a project for his class.

After the initial push, though, Torres says the overall sustainability changes were easily made a part of “the norm” for the staff and students.

“It folded itself into the culture,” Torres said. “It got buy in the right way, which is why we looked at it in the leadership class. It got buy in from all the people that were able to make decisions.”

In 2017, Hamilton Southeastern schools spent $4.1 million on electricity. In 2019, after the Watt Watchers

challenge, the district spent $3.8 million on electricity.

Despite adding a new elementary school and 1,000 new students.

According to Rice, the littlest changes make a huge impact on how much energy is actually being used in the buildings. The minor changes that Rice encouraged included switching over lamp lights to LED bulbs and unplugging electronic device chargers when they aren’t being used.

“It’s just getting everybody to do little things,” Rice said.

To try and reduce their carbon footprint as well, MSD of Wayne Township has installed more than 7,000 solar panels next to Ben Davis High School. According to their website, this shift will help reduce their electrical power dependency by 80%. A Fox 59 article about the solar farm project says that the project cost $5 million, but the Township expects that their energy costs will decrease

While schoolwide practices are largely responsible for the carbon footprint that the school leaves, there are ways for individuals to reduce their negative impact on the environment.

Brunsell has implemented changes into her everyday life to be sustainable. She suggests using a reusable water bottle instead of going through multiple plastic water bottles. Brunsell says that the production of plastic bottles harms the environment and that the plastic can cause cancer.

According to Bullock, being aware and knowledgeable of the environment is something that can easily be done by students and staff.

“Taking environmental science and science classes like that are a huge help just to be educated on the subject,” Bullock said. “It’s a big deal to know what exactly you’re doing to the environment when you do the things you do.”

Poyser says he’s not the type of person that thinks everyone has to be perfect in trying to positively impact the Earth. He says that if everyone begins to make small changes in their everyday lives, depending on their lifestyle and resources, then they will be on the right track.

“Avoid single use plastic, don’t drive alone when you can carpool or ride a bike or take a bus…” Poyser said. “I just invite people to be aware of their daily use of resources and then do what they can to reduce that use.”

Bowling veteran carries success into senior year

competitive bowling in the sixth grade after her dad and future coach, Terry Woodmansee, and her friends convinced her to get involved. As she progressed through middle school, she started to see results and went to junior nationals.

Woodmansee continued to bowl all throughout middle school, eventually dropping basketball after playing for six years to pursue bowling full time.

“In sixth grade my dad got me back into it after he quit when I was born, and then I started bowling for fun before I picked it up competitively in seventh grade,” Woodmansee said.

Terry has been an important part of her life as he was the reason she started competitive bowling. He started coaching her in middle school before moving on to become a coach of the SHS bowling team where he got to watch his daughter grow as a player and a person.

“I am very proud of her,” Terry said. “I can’t wait to see where her (collegiate career) takes her.”

Woodmansee showed potential on the bowling team in her freshman year. She then became a standout bowler in her sophomore year after she showed her improvement by winning semi-state. In her junior year Woodmansee

finally bowled a 300 in practice and went on to place fourth at semi-state as a junior.

According to Woodmansee, improving her bowling skills didn’t happen simply as a result of hard work. Woodmansee credits her improvement to her teammates for pushing her and supporting her all the way throughout high school.

One of the teammates to see Woodmansee progress this year is junior Sarah Mendoza.

Mendoza is finishing up her first year on the bowling team while still maintaining energy and supporting her teammates. According to Mendoza, Woodmansee is and has been a standout bowler on the team who is always giving her team a boost of morale and confidence with her energy.

“Her personality is very booming, (and) it spreads to the whole team,” Mendoza said. “When she is excited, everyone gets excited.”

According to Woodmansee’s mother, Tammy Woodmansee, her daughter is not just improving in the physical aspects of the game but is growing mentally as well, and she is now amassing a bigger understanding of the sport.

Oil patterns are oil on the bowling lane that are different on each lane and affect the rotation of the ball as it travels down the bowling lane.

“Her knowledge of oil patterns and what balls work better on different patterns is a big part of the improvements that I’ve seen,” Tammy said.

Woodmansee’s effort and improvements have paid off, as she has now gotten multiple Division One collegiate offers. Schools such as Nebraska University, Marian University and Insula University have expressed interest in her. Woodmansee has decided to continue her bowling career at Marian University. According to Woodmansee, she is very excited to pursue her athletic career at the next level, but she says she could not have done it without the help of everyone around her.

“I love my teammates to death,” Woodmansee said.

“They have a great attitude and push me to be where I am, and I would not be where I am today without my teammates.”

I was at work on Sunday, Jan. 26 when I heard about the helicopter crash that killed the “Black Mamba” Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna.

Working at the Baxter YMCA, I see a lot of basketball fans on a daily basis. On Sunday, I watched as many people took a break from their workouts to sit down for a few minutes to pull out their phones and read the news. My social media feed was dominated by tributes to Bryant and Gianna. I also saw that some people didn’t really know who Bryant was or why he was so important.

To be fair, I understand that not everyone follows the NBA, so this is for the people who know Bryant is one of the most well-known players in the history of the NBA but don’t know why. What made Bryant so great on the court, and what makes a man a mamba?

Those that have heard the name Kobe Bryant have probably also heard the name Black Mamba. Bryant gave himself the nickname after

My personal favorite Black Mamba moment happened when The Lakers played the Orlando Magic on March 7, 2010. Bryant had been getting into it with the Magic’s Matt Barnes when Barnes took a ball within a foot of Bryant’s face and acted like he was going to pelt him straight in

the face. Bryant responded by not moving at all and showed no signs of backing down or flinching. This is the perfect example of the “Mamba Mentality” Bryant possessed.

This is what made Bryant so likeable for fans across the globe. I always hear people talking about how the NBA has changed and gone soft, but the way Bryant played was reminiscent of the times when basketball was more focused on being physical and running through someone standing in the way instead of trying to sell as many fouls as possible.

Kids could look up to Bryant as a man that wouldn’t ever be afraid of a challenge. When kids in schools all around America would shoot their wadded up papers in the trash can, whose name would they throw out, too? The Black Mamba’s. Those same kids weren’t always passionate NBA fans either, but they knew the name Kobe.

The Black Mamba was a household name then, now and will be for generations.

ersonas que cumplen 15 años en los EEUU celebran su cumpleanos con familia y amigos, como cualquier otro cumpleanos ordinario. Pero cuando una niña se convierte 15 en partes de latinoamérica, es más que un cumplanos, es un hito. Es hito se refiere como una quinceañera, una gran celebración simbolizando que una niña está lista para dejar su infancia y mudarse a la feminidad.

Esta tradicional de cumpleanos se remonta a los Aztecas del mundo acient.

Aunque este tradicional es vieja, aun no es tiempo de renunciar. Una parte de la gente en la cultura hispana dejaron a la tradición.

Todavía celebran como un cumpleaños normal, pero no contribuirán a hacer una quinceanera. En los últimos años, visto a personas celebrar quinces cada vez menos. Me invitarian a quinceañeras al menos dos o tres veces al año, pero recientemente no lo he hecho.

Los padres nos necesariamente tiene que gastar todo el dinero en tener una quinceanera ellos mismos. La quinceanera, la nina tiene que celebra su cumpleanos, elige a una madrina y un padrino, su responsabilidad es pagar por el vestido, los tacones, el cabello y el maquillaje. Con esto, los padres ahorran más

dinero. Este trae un buen beneficio cuando se lanza una quinceanera porque es solo una cosa de una vez.

Lanzando una quinceañera también puede ser muy difícil porque los padres tienen que planear la celebración de seis a ocho meses antes del gran día.

Los padres no solo tienen que preocuparse por la fiesta en sí, sino también por la cumpleañera de la quinceañera. La niña tiene que practicar su baile, sus oraciones y encontrar el vestido y el peinado perfectos para su gran día.

Pero, cuando todo se junta, será un día monumental para los padres ver a su pequeña niña crecer y para la quinceañera darse cuenta de que se está con vi rt i en d o en una mujer. Vale la pena todo el

Imagina recibir todos los regalos de personas que te saludaron y tener a tus mejores amigos y familiares a tu lado. Yo personalmente nunca celebré mis membrillos, pero lamento mi decisión. Veo a otras chicas con sus grandes y hermosos vestidos mientras bailan toda la noche. Creo que cada niña hispana debe celebrar y celebrar una quinceañera porque solo sucede a tiempo y es un día para recordar.
