FROM THE EDITOR DEAR READERS,

“After three years of late production nights, hard work, unforgettable moments and amazing laughs, it’s easy to say that I will miss (The Journal) dearly.”

Well, this is it. My last letter to you all.

It’s wild to think that this will be the last time I produce anything for The Journal. After three years of late production nights, hard work, unforgettable moments and amazing laughs, it’s easy to say that I will miss it dearly.

This year has been absolutely incredible. In my first letter I said I wanted the staff to grow and learn throughout each issue. I think it’s pretty fair to say we did just that.

I’d like to take the rest of this letter to say a couple of thank yous. First, to Online Managing Editor Lyndsay Valadez. She quite literally carried the weight of our entire website this year. She is the most reliable and dependable person I know, and I wouldn’t have been able to do anything this year without her.

Secondly, I’d like to say thank you to Print Managing Editor Haley Miller.

She stepped up during the last few issues of the year, and I couldn’t be more grateful. She jumped right into the position and put my mind at ease when I was overwhelmed. I never had to worry too much because I knew that she was probably already working on whatever problem was facing us.

Next, I’d like to thank all of the editors. There’s a lot of you, I know. But, each one of you has done a phenomenal job this year. It has been so fun watching you guys learn more and more every issue, and I’m so happy I was able to learn with you all. Thank you for embracing your own creativity and pushing The Journal to the next level. You guys are awesome.

And, of course, there would be no stories or pictures without the wonderful reporters. I met a lot of you guys this year, and I had no idea what to expect. I was thrilled to find a group of people who were excited and willing to learn and make The Journal and themselves the best they can be.

To the whole staff, thank you for letting me be your leader this year and also your friend. There were some tough times, but I think that we persevered through the hard times. I hold so many memories with all of you, and I hope you all continue to push your limits and do the amazing work you do.

I also want to thank Mr. K., who has supported me endlessly throughout high school, and, of course, makes The Journal as awesome as it is. The positive environment you create in Room 400 encourages me to be the best version of myself every day.

Lastly, if you’re reading this now, thank you. Not only did you read my entire letter, but you are holding The Journal in your hands. Without readers, The Journal wouldn’t have a purpose. If you’ve picked up any copy throughout the year, thank you for supporting us, and I hope you continue to read it next year.

REFLECTING ON OUR FLIGHT Look back at some of the most memorable moments of the 2018-2019 school year

P

rincipal Brian Knight says there’s no way anyone could have prepared for the “unique” things that happened at SHS this year.

When planning for this school year, or any school year, Knight says he leaves one foot in the previous year and one foot in the next because preparations start before the summer even begins. He feels he and the administration can try to look ahead and figure out what concerns may pop up, but they can never fully prepare for the unexpected, which was much of the 2018-2019 school year.

FIRST QUARTER

To start off the year flying as one, SHS created a new freshman orientation titled Cardinal Compass.

Administration gathered incoming junior and senior leaders to lead the new freshman class in an orientation, making the transition to high school easier. Freshmen were split into groups to talk about the years ahead and went on a tour of the school.

Freshman Aryssa Ramos says she loved having the experience of touring the school and meeting new people before her first year at the high school began. “(The orientation) wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be with (the upper classmen) being there,”

Ramos said. “It was like, ‘Oh, this is high school. This is way better than middle school.’”

Administration also implemented a new iPass at the beginning of this school year. New iPass classes are now separated by grade, while other iPass classes are for organizations or athletics.

Not too long after new iPasses were implemented and the school year began, tragedy struck the SHS community. Two students, senior Tyler Hall and junior Juwan Smith, passed away.

Hall’s girlfriend, sophomore Aaliyah McCool, says he was her best friend, and his unexpected passing hit her really hard. While she is still working through the grief and trying to find motivation, she says Hall made her realize there is more to life than what it may seem. “(His passing) made me realize instead of cherishing things more when they’re gone, you need to cherish them more in the moment than what you already do,” McCool said.

Only a week later Smith passed away. His friend, sophomore Hayden Puckett, says Smith made him open his eyes and see that all of the small moments in life do matter because people never know when or how things will come to an end.

“Something can be gone in a few seconds,” Puckett said. “Just like that.”

SECOND QUARTER President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence held a rally in the SHS Fieldhouse, in support of Senator Mike Braun for the upcoming midterm elections, who was also present at the rally on Nov. 2.

“I don’t think you can have a plan in place for ‘Hey, the National Republican party is going to call you and want to use the Fieldhouse for a presidential rally and the president and the vice president are going to be there, along with a senator candidate,” Knight said.

According to Knight, no matter where people stand on the political aspects of Trump, there needs to be some reverence for that office and the fact that it wanted to use SHS to host a rally.

Senior Liz Lamkin feels the same.

She says despite anyone’s political views, it was pretty cool that the current President of the United States came to SHS because not many people can say that. She went to the rally because she wanted to have the full experience of Trump’s visit.

“When I heard that Trump was coming, I thought it was pretty cool for our high school to have the president in it,” Ramos said.

“Like, even if you don’t like him, the President of the United States was in

our high school.”

Shortly after his visit, another SHS student, senior Rashawn Haskins, passed away in a car accident. The passing of Haskins devastated many, but brought the community together as they supported his family and celebrated what he had accomplished in his life.

Senior Akshar Zaveri says although he didn’t know Haskins extremely well, it was still sad for him, as well as the whole community.

He was astonished, though, at how much a tragedy could bring a community together.

“I’m from a different country so I was pretty amazed seeing everyone come together to help a family out,” Zaveri said.

Lamkin thinks that despite all differences, these unfortunate deaths really showed what SHS can and will do for a student.

THIRD QUARTER Ramos was a part of Best Buddies at SHS until it was shut

down for the rest of the school year on Jan. 1. Ramos was confused when she initially heard the news because of how much the program benefitted special education students, as well as their buddies. But she says she now understands that not many meetings were being planned, and enough wasn’t happening to keep the program on its feet. She is, however, excited for next year, as she hopes the organization can have a fresh start and be better than ever.

FOURTH QUARTER SHS Riley Dance Marathon held their six hour dance marathon on April 19. Lamkin and Zaveri were both involved in RDM this school year. Because Lamkin was president of RDM this year, she said it brought much more stress and many responsibilities on her, but she wouldn’t trade her experience for anything. Zaveri couldn’t help but be proud, too, because the organization raised around $11,000 more than last school year.

Ramos was on the catering

committee of RDM, and when she heard that they raised over $66,000, she says it was crazy. She feels extremely proud of the work that RDM has done this year for the kids.

“When they revealed the goal, we were all crying, like so excited,” Ramos said.

Lamkin says her high school experience is one she will never forget. She knows she has made lifelong friends and mentors out of students and teachers at SHS, along with Zaveri who says SHS has definitely reached his initial expectations. Ramos also says her first year of being at SHS has gone above and beyond anything she could have imagined.

There were surprising, enjoyable and devastating events and changes that took place at SHS this school year according to these students, but without this variety SHS wouldn’t be what it is today and wouldn’t impact as many lives as it does.

“If we want to excel in an everchanging world, then we’ve got to be changing,” Knight said.

Two SHS speech team members prepare to compete in Dallas

eart racing. Hands shaking. These are the physical symptoms that two members of the SHS Speech and Debate Team will likely experience on a much grander scale this June.

Junior Alexa Haines and sophomore Terry Tripp will be competing at Nationals for the first time in their high school careers. For SHS, this is the first time anyone from the team will be going to Nationals since 2015.

“It’s really neat,” Haines said. “I’m really honored to have that experience, but it’s a little bit stressful. I think ‘Oh my gosh, I’m really going.’”

Haines and Tripp will be going to Nationals in Dallas, from June 18 to 21.

According to Speech and Debate Team coach Sara Berghoff, it depends on if a student finds the right piece to perform at the right time to determine if they will go to Nationals or not.

Berghoff says that the team has a very talented group of members this year. She believes that they are very lucky Haines and Tripp were able to find the right pieces and events as a junior and sophomore because sometimes it can take years to find that for students.

And still, it sometimes doesn’t happen until the last minute.

“Sometimes, you spend four years with students trying to find that right thing for them and you don’t find it until the last minute,” Berghoff said. “This year we lucked out and found it because Lex is a junior and Terry’s a sophomore and to find what works best for them this early is fantastic.”

Haines is participating in an event called “Program Oral Interpretation,” which is an event where the speaker takes passages from books, poems or any outside source that can be used together to enhance the message the speaker is trying to give. According to Haines, her piece is about the Trail of Tears.

Haines chose this topic due to her Native American ancestry on her father’s side. As long as she can remember, Haines

says that the biggest part of her life is her culture and spiritual beliefs.

“It’s been in my life for as long as I can remember, like the ceremonies and stuff, and within the past couple of years I’ve been a lot more involved with it, and it’s so important to me,” Haines said. “So I used that for a sort of foundation for my piece.”

To help offset the costs of going to Nationals, the SHS Speech and Debate Team organized a fundraiser. They currently have raised $1,460 on their One Cause page. Alumnus Jason Kegerris who went to Nationals in Birmingham, Alabama in 2009, donated $700 to the team. Kegerreis wants other students to be able to experience nationals as well.

“It’s my experience in life that life gives everybody equal amounts of talent but not equal amounts of opportunity,” Kegerreis said. “... I didn’t want to know that there were students who didn’t get to broaden themselves for reasons that are outside of their control.”

Kegerreis is one former student who was impacted by his time on the team.

As he reflects back on his experiences with the team he can now see the positive impact that it had on his life.

Kegerreis feels that he had an advantage over others in college due

to the fact that it felt very natural to him to be able to take large amounts of information and break it down into three main points, just like he did on when he was on the team. He also uses his skills from speech in his everyday life while currently being in the workforce.

According to Kegerreis, the number one fear that people have anxiety over is talking, and the need for talking will never go away. Kegerreis believes that it is better to learn to communicate and speak up in a controlled environment.

“The ability to communicate, the ability to analyze, to discuss ideas to understand things are critical for college and for adult life,” Kegerreis said. “I first got those skills in speech.”

Besides Kegerreis, other alumni have donated as well. According to Berghoff, it’s what keeps her going.

“Sometimes you don’t see the successes in the way that you want to see the successes,” Berghoff said. “But for that, for those former students to come back and say, ‘No, doing this meant something to me in my life and I want to help you guys so that you can keep paying that forward.’ It just really touched me, and it just made me so happy.”

An extravagant culture ANNUAL SHS EXTR AVAGANZA CONCERT SHAPES MUSICAL CULTURE FOR STUDENTS

W

ith the school year coming to an end and students buckling down to prepare for finals, the music department has also been consistently preparing for their end-of-the-year concert, Extravaganza.

Extravaganza is a combination concert in which all of the advanced ensembles from band, orchestra and choir perform together.

According to senior Aubrey Popovic, throughout Extravaganza, each group performs their own set of music, and then band and orchestra perform a song together. As the concert nears its end, all the groups perform two songs together and then

in order to honor the seniors, the groups then perform a “senior song” together accompanied by a slideshow of senior photos.

“My favorite part is probably the senior song,” Popovic said. “Even though I’m performing during it, I still get to watch the slideshow and still get to see everybody and the process that they have made throughout the four years.”

According to junior Sarah Rusaw, who has performed in Extravaganza since her freshman year, this endof-year concert is what she looks forward to the most.

“It is what I look forward to the

most,” Rusaw said. “I feel like people think Extravaganza is more made for them because we get a say in what we play.”

Rusaw says that while Extravaganza is very exhilarating, the preparation that comes with it can be very stressful for nearly everyone in the music department as it is their last show of the year and a lot of people attend.

According to Popovic, who is a part of the show choir group that performs at Extravaganza, preparation for this concert takes quite a bit of time.

“With choir, we rehearse from the end of February or beginning of

March, all the way to Extravaganza in May,” Popovic said.

Extravaganza does not only affect the students involved, but it also affects the directors. According to orchestra director Thomas Wright, Extravaganza can be seen as a way for them to set the curriculum.

“From the time that the students are in eighth grade, we are subtly preparing them to play Extravaganza,” Thomas said. “It helps me plan out the curriculum and skills we need to cover.” Senior Nicole Whitman says that the students never stop rehearsing for Extravaganza from the moment they get their instrument in middle school to their very last concert.

Whitman says that the middle school music department really focuses on learning more advanced skills for them to showcase at Extravaganza.

Popovic says that the songs that are performed at Extravaganza are placed in the hands of middle schoolers who are set to come up and be a part of the music department here at SHS. This is done in order to prepare the students ahead of time for what they will be performing in Extravaganza.

“In middle school, you get a version of “Stars and Stripes,” “The National Anthem” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and you pretty much use

that same version from then until your senior year,” Popovic said.

Extravaganza is an annual event, and it is something that is taken very seriously by the entire music department. From preparing students in middle school and all throughout high school in order to make the performance better each year, it is something that has helped shape and well round the musical culture in the music department as well as in SHS. Popovic says that Extravaganza

is great because it is the one time that all of the sections in the music department get to perform together.

“It’s really cool because ever ybody really gets to get together because none of our concerts are really ever together,” Popovic said. “We don’t ever get to play together, sing together or anything other than with your own section in the department so having the bigger concert, you get to see what ever y does throughout the year and how it all comes together.”

Music ‘n Musings The past should be cherished in the present Column by Rachel Bayler

Here it is, the last Friday of the school year. A moment both dreaded and longed for. For our seniors, this marks the last week of their high school careers. In exactly one week, they will cross the Fieldhouse floor in their caps and gowns and bid their lives as high school students goodbye.

But was high school worth it? All the games, dances, performances, classes, did they really have an impact? The song “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” by Simple Minds offers an argument in their favor.

It’s tempting to think of high school as four years of our lives full of angst and hormones and drama that does nothing but take up precious time before our

entrance in the adult world. We count the days, hours, minutes until we can walk across the stage and take our diplomas and get out. High school can be projected as a kind of waiting period, where teenagers sit and learn the necessities of life before entering the real world and putting what they’ve learned to use.

I think this mentality makes it easier to write off everything you’ve done in high school as less important than what you’re about to do after you leave. Adults like to remind teenagers that their high school friendships will likely fall off after graduation and that their participation in athletics, music, theater and clubs are only important in regards to getting into college but don’t really matter in the real world. But I don’t think we should perpetuate this idea that exists in our culture that high school doesn’t carry as much weight as college or life after school, especially in regards to how formative these years are for the minds and ideas of young people.

I think “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” can be seen as a kind of plea against our culture’s desire to leave high school in the past.

For those familiar with the movie “The Breakfast Club,” this is the song that plays at the very end, when Bender walks across the field, fist in air, having finally been able to overcome something in his life successfully.

It’s one of my favorite songs, not only for its witty lyrics but for its groovy ‘80s pop sound. Against the background of stereotypical ‘80s synth, the singer is begging not to be forgotten, scared that everything he has done for his love will be thrown out like it meant nothing.

How like the end of high school, when we are excited to leave behind these awkward years to rush boldly into adulthood.

But rushing straight into the future without any regard for the past can be detrimental. I’m not saying high school will be the best years of your life because they won’t be. They’re still awkward and cringy and full of regrets, but I don’t think we should let that overshadow all of the great things we did during our years here at SHS. We should be able to look fondly back at our years here instead of being desperate to leave them behind.

Someday I hope we can all walk out of here like Bender, with our fists held high, proud of what we’ve done and ready to carry what we’ve learned into the rest of our lives. As you make your way through the rest of your life journey and momentarily look back on your time here at SHS, “will you call my name, as you walk on by,” or will you just keep going?

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Coaches are here to help

After reading Logan Zrebiec’s editorial in the last issue, I felt compelled to write a response. I think Logan is an outstanding young man, but I also feel his opinion is one that is shared by a majority of society, which is “it can’t be my fault, it has to be my coach’s.” In life we tend to find other avenues for fault rather than look in the mirror.

I try to live my life by the E+R=O (Event + Reaction = Outcome) mantra because the only thing I can control is my reaction. As a society we think it’s wrong for things to be tough or not successful. People will learn more from their failures than they will from their successes. In life people will have bosses they don’t enjoy working for and some they do. No matter what, all you control is yourself and your attitude.

The time I put into coaching is beyond insane, but I do it because I love what I do on the field and the impact that I have on our athletes.

Multiple coaches helped shape me into the man, husband, father, teacher and coach that I am today. This sparked a fire in me to do the same and return the favor. My coaches taught me how to handle tough situations by overcoming adversity, how to be a teammate and how to give everything I can. Trust me, I’m not spending all this extra time away from my family to try and ruin an athlete’s love for the game.

In Logan’s editorial, there was a quote that stood out: “Hard work will get you on the field.” It’s tough to understand. Yes, it is true that hard work pays off most of the time, but there are instances in life when

hard work isn’t going to be good enough. Unfortunately, sometimes other people will be better than you.

Your coach is telling you hard work will make you better and you need to be better to play. Even if you never become good enough, you become better by working hard.

This is a life skill and something that makes you a better person. Yes, it’s tough to accept, but the reality is the only thing I can control about my talent is how hard I work. I may or may not be rewarded for that, but no matter what, I gave my best, and I’ll always know that.

Logan mentioned that bad coaches have favorites. I’m here to tell you ALL coaches have favorites.

They are the kids who show up

every day, give a great effort and are great teammates. As coaches, we have to put forth the lineup that gives us the best chance to win. At the end of the day, we are trying to win a game, and sometimes that means my favorite player doesn’t play. That doesn’t change the relationship I have with the player, the impact I hope to have on their life or the overall impact playing the sport will have on their life.

The statistic of “75% of athletes will quit their sport by 15” is not alarming. It is life. We have a school of nearly 2,200 students and only have 11 spots on a football field, five on a basketball court, and nine on a baseball field. The numbers don’t allow for a 75% participation rate. The reality is it’s teaching students another life skill. When I graduated from college, there were almost 6,000 new teachers looking for teaching jobs in the state of Indiana. For my position, they had over 55 applicants. The principal had to pick who she thought was the best fit for SHS. Lucky for me, it was me!

Next time you want to blame the coach, maybe you should think about all that coach is doing to help shape you into the person you are becoming. In the end you can’t control how much you play or the outcome of the game, but you can control your reaction to those things. In the end no one is going to care what happened in your high school sports career, but they are going to care about how the sports shaped you into the person you are today.

The drinking age should stay the same

The 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Survey conducted by the CDC found that 30% of high schoolers drank some amount of alcohol, 14% binge drank, 6% drove after drinking and 17% rode with a driver who had been drinking. Of the 819,000 youth aged 12 to 20 in Indiana, 176,000 of them reported alcohol use in 2018, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. They also reported that 92 deaths were attributed to alcohol.

Because of the consequences, the drinking age should remain as is if not be increased. Lowering the age would only worsen the problems.

Sure, not everyone drinks recklessly, but just as most were told in elementary school, one person can ruin it for everyone.

High school parties are inevitable.

You know, the ones people promote saying “BYOB” or “make it fat.” That’s always going to be a thing. But, by all means, don’t be ignorant. Most parties get shut down anyways, so you’re better off not getting caught by the police and having a record.

People always say that the human brain doesn’t stop developing until the age of 25. Allow me to explain.

as it is still developing.

“The adolescent brain is a work in progress...marked by significant development in areas of the brain responsible for learning, memory, complex thinking, planning, inhibition and emotional regulation,” Dean-Mooney wrote.

She goes on to discuss consequences including suicidal thoughts and academic slippery slopes. She says alcohol would put students at a greater risk for those actions.

In addition to the negative effects of alcohol on the brain, alcohol accessibility is already too easy as is. A 17- or 18-year-old high schooler may have been friends with someone who was a senior when he or she was a freshman. That makes the former senior now 21 or 22 years old and the former freshman a current high school senior. So let’s say the drinking age is 18 for whatever reason.

Okay, now there are 18 year olds who are now in high school with potentially thousands of underage students who now have easier accessibility to alcohol.

That also pushes prevention responsibility to teachers.

You don’t need alcohol or drugs to have fun. People say it all the time, and I know it sounds cliche.

But it’s true. Have fun, but don’t make dumb decisions. Don’t let your grades slip, and definitely don’t resort to drinking as a coping mechanism.

These things may appear to be common sense, but who’s to say youth will comprehend right from wrong? Overall, teenagers aren’t the best decision-makers, so let’s leave alcohol out of the mix.

The drinking age should be lowered

In nine days I will turn 18 years old. At that time I will be able to buy cigarettes or tobacco products legally, use lottery tickets, vote in any election, purchase a house or apartment by myself, get married and even purchase a firearm. The one activity not on this list is taking a drink of alcohol. To me, this seems absurd considering all of the opportunities we have when we become “adults.”

his/her friends or a high school student trying to fit in on the weekends. What if I said it doesn’t have to be that way?

One hundred six out of all 195 countries in the world, including neighboring countries, like Canada and Mexico, have their legal drinking age set at 18, but in the U.S. people can’t legally consume alcohol until they are 21.

Many people who partake in underage drinking do it in a very irresponsible manner because it is seen as almost a “forbidden fruit” because it is illegal. By lowering the consumption age, many people will cut down on the amount of irresponsible drinking because the thrill of doing illegal things will be gone. Many people “binge drink,” drinking as much alcohol as they can in a quick time, because they never know if the police will show up in the middle of the party or other function they are attending. With a lowered drinking age, teens will most likely cut down on the binge drinking because of the fact that they will legally be able to consume

alcohol and not have to worry about getting arrested.

Another reason it should be lowered is because 18 is the legal age of adulthood in the U.S. meaning that people can live on their own, make their own decisions and even defend their country and put their lives on the line in the military. If a person is able to do all these things, then they should be able to drink alcohol legally.

Many people claim that if the U.S. lowers the drinking age that more crimes will rise but, according to drinkingageprocon. org, these numbers were found in a 2002 meta-study of the legal drinking age and health and social problems, which showed that 72% of the studies found no statistically significant relationship despite claims that lowering the MLDA to 18 would increase suicide and criminal activities by adolescents.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 65% of countries allow people 18 years or older to consume alcohol at a bar or restaurant. More than 55% of countries allow 18 year olds to buy alcohol at stores to consume offpremise. In the U.S., the drinking age is 21, a law the country shares with only five other countries.

SHS struggles to uphold “Fly As One” motto year round

In our first issue of the year, we, The Journal, covered our school’s new motto, “Fly As One” for our cover story.

The new phrase was meant to signify a focus on growth in character as a whole rather than simply on academics and the unification of the school towards that larger goal.

With only one week of school remaining, we ask ourselves: Did we really fly as one this year?

We believe that through the majority of the school year, SHS flew as one, but students and faculty alike could’ve done more to consistently implement this motto throughout the year.

During this past school year, SHS faced a lot. From the excitement of pep sessions to the tragic deaths of students and friends, our community learned how to support each other. The sense of unity felt at these happiest and saddest of times was something that was unique to SHS this school year.

Consider the new implementation of Cardinal Compass, the group that welcomed new freshmen to the school. For the first time, for most, it felt exciting to be accepting new students to the building, especially since those who were doing the welcoming were upperclassmen.

But, shortly thereafter, SHS started to struggle to maintain its new goal of unity.

The implementation of newly restructured iPass classes separated the grades from one another and divided the student body into athletic, non-athletic, student council and specialty iPass classes. As one of the driving forces behind introducing “Fly As One” as the year’s motto was to unite students into one cohesive unit, it seems kind of counterintuitive. Despite

this, we continued to excel during the first semester.

From the early-morning pep session, for which students of all grades woke up way earlier than usual to represent our school, to another exciting homecoming parade and game, we were constantly reminded of the “Fly As One” motto because we were surrounded in student and staff activities.

But, winter brought many changes.

The sports season winded down, and so did the reminders of “Fly As One.” Then, we met tragedy with the loss of three students, whose deaths were felt by many around the school and community.

This brought us closer as a community in many ways, but it is always difficult to cheer for unity while grieving.

And, of course, President Donald Trump held a rally at our school. It was not during school hours, yet it divided our school in a way that most have never seen before. We even covered this division in our fourth issue of The Journal.

This, we feel, was the tipping point that made the middle of the year begin to lose grip on the mantra “Fly As One.” Of course, we don’t believe the rest of the year was bad. In fact, we would argue that we continued to fly as one throughout the whole year in many ways. But, as far as truly feeling and remembering the idea of uniting as a school and flying as one, this idea was forgotten. No longer were our iPass classes teaching us about core values.

No longer did we see administration, teachers or staff actually talking about why we implemented the motto in the first place.

This seems natural. It’s a trend that happens every time something new is

implemented, whether in school, in a job or life. We start strong, get comfortable, and forget to continue the strength that we started with.

Certainly, there were obvious moments of unity in the second semester.

Last month, SHS rallied and raised over $60,000 for the SHS Riley Dance Marathon, with over 200 students coming together in pursuit of this yearlong goal. The mantra “FTK” united so many students and staff, creating lasting memories and a lasting impact on the kids at Riley Children’s Hospital. Flying as one unit, these students were able to be a force for good and a symbol of pride for SHS. Another symbol of pride is a mural now displayed in the school’s 100s hallway, showing the many countries represented at SHS with the motto of “Fly As One” titling the piece. The creation of a second mural is already in place. While some schools might divide with so much diversity present, this is one of SHS’s most uniting qualities, and we have displayed that proudly through these murals since they have been created.

Ultimately, it’s hard to get a building full of 2,200 students and staff to achieve a goal. However, despite our downfalls, SHS grew during this year because of the implementation of the motto “Fly As One.” In the future, we believe we can be even more successful by staying consistent in the reminder of the motto, even when we think that we are doing a great job.

PASSION AND PURPOSE Amanda Schnepp uses love of science to inspire students

S

cience teacher Amanda Schnepp said she grew up wandering in the woods around her grandparents’ house and soaking up nature. Discovering examples of life science and spending time outside sparked her passion and interest in biology.

Years later, sitting in a molecular biology class during her third year of college at Purdue University, Schnepp decided she could get the lesson across more effectively than the professor. Following that realization, she switched her focus over to teaching.

“I love science,” Schnepp said. “I love biology, specifically. I wanted other people to be as excited about biology and science as I am.”

Schnepp has been named the 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year for SHS. This honor is the result of her unique teaching style, her connection with students and the inspiration she gives to other teachers.

“Her nomination is, I think, one that is well-deserved,” Principal Brian Knight said. “Why she was nominated is just because of the

kind of teacher she is… I think what is intriguing to me about Amanda and the work that she does is she really finds a way to challenge and support at the same time.”

Schnepp’s love for teaching biology goes deeper than the science. As science is always changing, she is focused on keeping up with the advancements and giving students the best learning experience possible.

In her classroom, she teaches through real-world scenarios to try and reach the students in more recognizable ways. She listens to podcasts and reads scientific articles from journals, news sites and magazines to enhance her own knowledge.

“I think biology is one of the coolest things to teach… because it’s always changing, and we’re always finding new things...,” Schnepp said. “I think just the wonder and the questions that are there really excite me.”

Schnepp’s teaching style and approach to different learning topics is one thing that stands out

to her students and peers. Schnepp focuses on her classroom being an environment in which students are open to asking questions. She is thankful to teach AP and honors students, who want to know the reasoning behind the subjects being taught. These classes are also more advanced, so it keeps her challenged and engaged, according to Schnepp.

“I hope to, I think I do, run a classroom where students feel really, really comfortable asking questions about anything,” Schnepp said. “And I love that. I don’t like to present information. I very much more prefer asking questions and answering questions, than just sitting and presenting information.”

One of her nominators, physics teacher Stacey Matlock, says she sees Schnepp as an inspiration and the perfect choice for this award.

Despite teaching very different forms of science, these two learn a lot from each other every day.

Matlock is very thankful for all of the ideas and advice she has received from Schnepp. She also recognizes

the effort Schnepp puts into teaching her students and sees the change in her students’ work ethics.

“She’s always wanting to try to perfect her craft,” Matlock said. “She’s never satisfied, so to speak. Always eager to do better, and I think that’s what makes a great teacher as well.”

Following a new philosophy this year, Schnepp has been taking the lessons to a deeper level. She implements Kintsugi, a Japanese art that focuses on turning failure into a beautiful piece of art.

Schnepp has been putting this to use in her classroom, teaching students to celebrate and learn from their mistakes.

“Where you find a failure, where you find a shortcoming, if you really

work on it and admit to it and fix it the right way instead of covering it up, it becomes a strength instead of a failure,” Schnepp said.

Senior Zam Muan is inspired by this philosophy in many ways.

He has learned to not give up in tough situations, especially in the classroom.

“That always reminded me of when I can’t do the work that we’re supposed to do, I always remember that it’s okay, it’s okay...,” Muan said. “(Schnepp) doesn’t teach just biology, but also life lessons to students.”

Inspired partly by this philosophy, Muan wrote a song expressing some of the life lessons he has learned.

Besides the lessons in the

classroom, Schnepp attempts to continue the learning outside of the typical school environment, this being very important to her teaching style. One particular event, the AP camping trip to Indiana Dunes, is meant to show her students reallife examples of what they learned in class. On that trip, students take a nature hike to surround themselves with models of different lessons Schnepp has taught. Senior Ashley Williams went on the trip last year and appreciated the out-of-textbook connections to what she had been learning in class.

“It was a lot of fun because it was a new environment,” Williams said “It was a lot of learning about different plants and how they had evolved

Her other nominator, master teacher Chris Finkhouse, has known Schnepp for about 13 years. Knowing her as not only a coworker but as a friend, Finkhouse says he recognizes her passion for teaching and respects her expectations of her students. He says he has learned quite a bit from her, and he sees her as an inspiration to other teachers. Finkhouse says he recognizes her intentions to help her coworkers with any problem they may have.

“As a friend, she’s a problem solver,” Finkhouse said. “Teaching right next to her for 10 years, if I had a problem, she was the first person I went to. She’s a natural-born leader.”

thankful for the lessons she has learned while being in Schnepp’s class.

Working hard for answers and putting in effort outside of class are a couple of the skills Flatto plans to take with her during her last year of high school and on to college. “(Her class is) going to help me prepare for college because a lot of colleges do that,” Flatto said. “It’s more AP level.”

Freshman Alyssa Cummings is a student in Schnepp’s Honors Biology class. Cummings especially takes notice of all of the engaging activities Schnepp organizes. Cummings also is appreciative of how kind Schnepp is to her, in and out of the classroom. She learned many lessons from Schnepp that she plans to carry with her throughout the rest of her high school career and college, including notetaking skills and how to get the best

out of the given information.

“She always makes sure we get it,” Cummings said. “She takes us to the lab and really shows us instead of just showing it on the board. She really is hands on and lets us learn through doing it, instead of just telling us.”

In the future, Schnepp plans to continue to perfect her craft and learn from experiences in the classroom.

As science is forever changing and improving, Schnepp hopes to follow this trend as a teacher and keep moving her class forward.

“The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that my best days... are when I remember how exciting science is,” Schnepp said. “If I can remember that, and I remember that I’m trying to get other people excited, (then) those are good days. And those are good days for (the students) and that means good days for me.”

“The diversity. I love it. We have so much diversity in this school, and I am privileged to see it every day. And that’s amazing.

And I love that as diverse as we are in this building, everybody gets along.”

“My favorite lab with AP is the bacteria, the pGLO bacteria, where we put a gene from a jellyfish into bacteria, because that’s really, “My favorite, and it’s not one memory, really fun. And we learn about a lot more than it’s several different times or things, that just the DNA, and gene expression, making students work on something really, really a protein. Because we get to talk about hard and they don’t give up. They do bacteriology, we get to talk about antibiotic fail, and they try again, and then all of a resistance and pull a lot of things into that. sudden they get it and they’re so proud One of my favorite labs with freshmen is the of themselves. But if you stop and reflect on where you are now, versus Who is your role a month ago, two months ago, the beginning of the year, it’s really neat to see.

Why is biology the superior science?

“Biology is the superior science because you really have to have a basic knowledge of other sciences in order to fully understand biology. And you don’t with chemistry and physics.

So, I always kind of joke that (chemistry) and physics only exist so that you can have a better understanding of biology.

Especially chemistry.”

“Oh, I have many. My parents were both teachers. My dad was not teaching by the time I was born. They actually met teaching. So my mom was always a teacher… Then, when I came here, I had an amazing department chair, (Terry) Lewis… who retired a few years ago. He was a wonderful role model in science teaching. My work mom is Mary Jungemann, she was an English teacher who retired a few years ago. And so I’ve always loved looking up to those other teachers and seeing what they’re doing.

Current teachers that are role models for me, (physics teacher Stacey) Matlock, (social studies teacher David) Luers, (social studies teacher Dan) Jones, (math teacher) Mary Wheeler, I think they’re all amazing teachers, and there are so many more. There are many, many more and I really like seeing what they are doing in their classrooms.”

Aches & pains Injury recovery is part of everyday life for SHS athletes

F

ollowing his freshman football season, Brayon Hogan had hopes of playing first team defense at the varsity level. On his second day of summer workouts, Hogan was guarding now junior Brevin Jefferson when something went wrong. As Hogan turned to run in pursuit of Jefferson, their feet got tangled up with each other’s, and Hogan’s upper body twisted sharply while his lower body stayed planted.

Hogan hit the ground hard. After

staying down for a few minutes, Hogan tried to stand on his right leg when he heard a shatter in his hip. This was the moment he knew he would have to wait a little longer to get where he wanted, as Hogan would be on the sideline his entire sophomore year.

“It was hard to be patient,” Hogan, now a junior, said. “I missed a whole year of doing something I loved.”

Hogan was not easy. Like Hogan, many athletes that endure serious injury must be disciplined in their recovery programs and have patience.

“The hardest part was trying to recover instantly, instead of taking it one day at a time,” Hogan said.

Similarly, junior running back Lamarco Yates suffered from a torn ACL after his sophomore year and missed out on his whole junior season. According to Yates, one of the hardest parts of recovery for him was sitting out and waiting. Yates had a successful sophomore season as he rushed for 323 yards and four touchdowns. He was looking forward to coming back as a key player for SHS. Despite missing out on this, Yates feels the recovery process taught him the game of football from a different perspective and helped to make him a better person.

“Things happen for a reason,” Yates said. “It also made me realize never take the game for granted.”

While Yates and Hogan have gone through the recovery process successfully, not everyone shares the same positive outcome. Junior Bella Green has had two stress fractures in her right leg and one in her left since sixth grade, but she still stays committed to playing year-round sports. Green is a part of the cross country, track and basketball team. According to Green,

this large workload is hard for her body to manage.

“I think that my bones just can’t handle all the activity I do,” Green said.

For athletes like Green, athletic trainer Mike Rudisill recommends increasing flexibility as one of the most effective ways to prevent injury. Often, athletes get injured because their muscles are tight and ill-prepared to complete the task expected of them. Proper stretching and flexibility will help athletes reduce the risk of injury and perform better, Rudisill says.

According to Rudisill, for athletes that do get injured, it’s important that they don’t rush back into action. These athletes may have to go through a functional progression with an athletic trainer before they can get back into action with their team. A functional progression is a series of various activities and exercises to assess one’s

physical capabilities.

“We use those checks and balances to make sure (reinjuries) don’t happen,” Rudisill said.

Recovering from serious injuries isn’t the only form of recovery. Day-to-day recovery is still important, according to Rudisill. Studies by BBC show that taking ice baths can reduce inflammation and soreness. Athletes, like Hogan and Yates, jump in an ice bath after practice or a competition to reap the benefits.

According to Yates, the next step for him is preparing for his senior season and keeping an eye out for college opportunities. However, he acknowledges some new changes will have to be made in regards to his recovery.

“I realized I was always active and never got a break,” Yates said. “So when I feel my body telling me it needs a break, I will do so from now on.”

The Michael Long sports experience

I knew a long time ago that my athletic ability wouldn’t get me far at all.

This ate at me when I was younger, so much so that I made the decision to quit basketball after my freshman year. After my last game that season, I stuck with my decision and didn’t go to any summer workouts. This whole time my friends, girlfriend and mother kept pushing me to keep playing, but I kept resisting.

I felt like I wasn’t good enough to accomplish anything from it, so why would I put in all the time and work just to not be good enough? Finally, after half the fall workouts were over with, I showed up to a workout. I’m so glad I did.

From that moment on, I was back.

That period of my life without sports was one of the darkest times of my life. It was nice at first not having to go to practices, but I had nothing to pour myself into, and I felt separated from everyone I knew. I was lost. Joining the basketball team again my sophomore year pulled me out of that darkness.

I even started running track my sophomore year. To put this into perspective, I entered my sophomore year with my ties to sports completely severed.

SO severed that when I was filling out my application to be on The Journal staff at the end of my freshman year, I wrote that I would be interested in photography and writing for features, news, entertainment -- pretty much everything BUT sports. I wanted nothing to do with sports. Then, by the end of my sophomore year, I was back on the basketball team, had joined the track team and was writing for the sports section of The Journal. My life became nothing but sports.

I still know that my athletic ability won’t get me anywhere, but that doesn’t make all the time I’ve poured into sports pointless, as I used to think.

For starters, sports connected me with many people that I consider family.

I have friends I’ve played basketball with

my entire life who are like my brothers.

Coaches have also had a huge impact on my life. I’ve had coaches that, yes, are fun to joke with, but were also great to go to for advice, especially with this upcoming college journey many of us are about to take.

Joining a brand new sport like I did my sophomore year also introduced me to people that I never thought I would have talked to, let alone become friends with.

We all know how playing sports promotes a healthy lifestyle, but after all these years, I can see how impactful they were to my social health. There was never a time I felt alone because of the sense of family that sports created -- a sense of family that I never would’ve experienced if I quit sports after my freshman year.

Perhaps the most important thing that came from my sports experience was how I learned to face adversity. Through four years of summer workouts, fall workouts, regular season practices, spring workouts and two track seasons, there were thousands of times when it could have been easy to just quit or take shortcuts, but I didn’t. I learned that my body will do what my mind tells it. This is an attitude I carry with me all of the time. Although not all my challenges are physical ones, I always know that I can do it. It will get done. The problem will be solved, even if it’s a rough road ahead because I always know I can achieve it if I put my mind to it.

Because I kept playing sports, I learned to see the beauty that comes from them, and I am honored to have been able to write about that beauty for three years for all of the readers of The Journal. The younger version of me wanted nothing to do with the sports community, but as I stuck with it, I connected with people, learned how to face adversity and discovered that I have a passion for reporting all the untold stories that lie within sports. So, in the long run, I’d say sticking with sports was well worth it.

Satire section scrapped for upcoming year

T

he time has come. Friday, May 17, 2019, marks the ending of an era.

The Red Onion has finally passed into the final frontier after being chopped in a horrific incident.

The Red Onion was born in 2016 to a family unknown. It appeared in the publications room overnight and was adopted by Logan “Putty” Flake.

The Red Onion brought laughter and smiles to the rooms and hallways of SHS, bringing real issues to light.

These issues included the evolution of “Tweaching,” a new social media course, the infamous “Crayola coverup” and the reveal of the teacher dance club.

In September 2016, The Red Onion covered the (RIP) Harambe scandal involving then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Students such as Debra Higgins felt personally targeted by Clinton’s actions and The Red Onion gave her the voice she had wanted in lieu of the shooting.

The months following that story were full of politics, except for The Red Onion, which reported on things that actually mattered. Such as the crowning of the Twitter Roast Battle Federation Heavyweight Champion, Clint Stevens, who remains the champion to this day.

This news rattled SHS to its core, ruining friendships and hundreds of totallylegal-and-sanctioned bets among

faculty and students alike.

These stories are only images of what an infant Red Onion was like… bringing happiness and joy to people’s lives with 100% accurate reporting. But as it matured into true onionhood, stories and reporting continued to evolve into something unexpected, something unpredictable to even the mightiest psychics.

The Red Onion had been the one high school publication section in the country to send military correspondents to the front lines of the most controversial war known to history: the Great Fry Holy War of 2017. Reporters were always at risk, some even being behind hostile territory at times to get the scoop. Corporations were rumored to be supporting “interests” in the war.

Teachers were always glad to work with The Red Onion, revealing the little-known man behind the curtain to students, Such as the time that AP teachers told their story to The Red Onion and trusted them to tell the full story. The story became a true beacon to their plight in teaching, resulting in unions springing up in support for their troubles with College Board.

With The Red Onion meeting peak maturity, Putty decided it was time to move on to lesser, menial things. It was decided after weeks of debate that Emma Sprague was the chosen one in

the wake of the unfortunate graduate.

The Red Onion then continued on cautiously, starting the year strong with tips and tricks on surviving high school.

This carefully curated list was culminated with years of testimony gathered by graduates who commented on what they loved and hated about high school, and what got them through each day.

Market trends weren’t exempt, with The Red Onion covering how the seasons changed with flavors rather than weather. This information has been directly attributed by various economic journals to be “model economic journalism.”

Other school controversies were reported on in its final months of life in 2018-2019, revealing the exclusive dance club being attended by teachers and as of recent, Oscar-winning celebrities in the area. Between the story being broken and admission to the club being made public to the highest of class, the school had seen a drastic increase in funds.

The demise of The Red Onion is preceded in part by Student Life. It is survived by Cobalt Henson, current editor, and two writers.

Services will be held July 24, outside of Room 400 at SHS at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requested that you send “mad stacks” of “that green green.”

Not everyone can write satire -even I myself don’t fully understand the concept just yet. It turns out writing

Logan “Putty” Flake Former Editor of The Red Onion 2016-2018 They told me to stick to the cards for this one, but I’m just gonna come right out and say it… I am Iron Man. Okay, maybe that isn’t true. However, this would be a pretty good time to make something that is, in fact, true very clear.

fake news is actually kinda hard. I got to voice my opinions through funny, yet serious and biting stories. But with each story came hours of planning and getting confused, rewriting until I felt it was great enough to send out to everyone. Even then, I had doubts that it was enough.

But with each issue that came out this year, all I ever heard was people talking about The Red Onion. I heard people laughing and pointing their friends out to themselves. Thats what made the manhours worth it. Laughter aside, it sparked conversation. It pointed out the ridiculousness of certain rules and the confusion of students. Such as when we came back from break to find the ghost hallway blocked off, my writers took to it to express their confusion by making

their own explanation which is something you can’t get with a simple statement or address.

As a writer, I had stepped out of my shell and gotten comfortable with what was uncomfortable. Deadlines came and went, but this experience made me value working as a team and that my opinion is actually valued.

Stepping up as an editor was difficult at first, but became much easier as the year went on. It allowed me to speak to administrators and officials about problems and become an advocate for the student body. In my opinion, what both sides lack is proper communication.

That’s why students end up questioning the powers at large.

Thank you, readers, for following each story from our conception to the end.

Everything that was published over The Red Onion’s three-year lifespan was real. Not real as in “the events that were portrayed actually went down” real -unfortunately, I didn’t actually ride my heely’s all the way to Target or fall in love with Xfinity Wi-Fi. I mean “real” in that these stories are tangible. They actually happened. Each one had a story behind it, a writer with a wacky idea that was spawned out of something they were passionate about. Whether that drive was something as silly as the outrage over festive designs on Starbucks coffee cups or something as permanent as climate change, satire allowed its writers the opportunity to press these issues in a unique way that hadn’t been seen before at SHS and may never be seen again.

These stories are SO real, in fact, that one of my smaller pieces, which was centered around a wardrobe for a mock Yeezy Season 7 which included a swimsuit made out of nothing but strips of fabric and floss, came up in an interview that I had for a writing position during my freshman year at Purdue.

That was... interesting. However, it did provide me with some perspective.

People actually read this stuff. It wasn’t published to be airdropped into a forest of baboons. There was a real audience for this, and I can only hope that this section proved to entertain that audience while it was around. If you ever need a laugh, you know where to find us. licia Moreno estaba confundida y nerviosa, una estudiante de segundo año, cuando le había preguntado una maestra, durante la clase de Español, que significaba una palabra en Español. Cuando Moreno no pudo contestar la pregunta, uno de los estudiantes gritó, “Eres Mexicana! Deberías saber!”

Después, cuando Moreno les había dicho que no sabía hablar Español, el estudiante dijo “Mexicana falsa!”

“Estoy un poco triste porque en realidad, no es mi culpa que no me han enseñado el Español,” Moreno dijo. “Así es como crecí, pero estoy en clases de Español, y estoy aprendiendo. Estoy haciendo mi mejor esfuerzo.”

Moreno, como mucho de otros Latinos, ha sido juzgada y criticada para no saber hablar el Español. El padre de Moreno es de México, y su madre es de Indiana. Moreno dice que ella no fue, realmente,

En séptimo grado, Moreno decidió tomar cursos de Español en la escuela. Moreno no los tomó debido a lo que otros habían dicho acerca de que ella no sabía el idioma, sino que quería una conexión más profunda con sus raíces y culturas Latinas.

Barbara Estrada, la madre de Moreno, lamenta no haberle enseñado el Español a su hija.

Estrada dice que no se lo enseñó a sus otros hijos porque el padre de Moreno no quería que supieran lo que él había dicho sobre ellos a otras personas. Ella cree que es importante aprender otra idioma y ser bilingüe debido a las muchas oportunidades que la habilidad puede ofrecer.

“Me arrepiento de no haberle enseñado,” Estrada dijo. “Su padre

no quería que ninguno de ellos supieran el Español porque no quería que ellos supieran su idioma.”

Hay otros latinos, como el estudiante de segundo año Luis García, que habla español con fluidez, que también creen que ser bilingüe podría traer muchas oportunidades. Según García, ser bilingüe puede llevar a mejores trabajos, tasas de pago más altas y una mayor comprensión de otras culturas y tradiciones.

García sabe que hay muchos latinos en los Estados Unidos que luchan con la misma situación, como no saber hablar el Español con fluidez. Él sabe que hay muchos de ellos que intentan conectarse y entender su cultura, pero cree que el lenguaje es el factor más importante para aprender primero.

Antes de enseñar inglés como segundo idioma durante 10 años y trabajar en La Plaza, una organización sin fines de lucro que ayudan a comunidades latinas en Indianapolis, Heidi Poe dice que ha visto una tendencia de latinos que no hablan español en los Estados Unidos, especialmente en familias que tienen varios niños.

Según Poe, generalmente el hijo mayor de esas familias es enviado a la escuela y se le enseña inglés, pero cuando los hermanos menores son enviados, el mayor, para entonces, ya no sabe hablar el Español. Luego, los niños pierden la conexión que tenían con sus familias y se les hace más difícil comunicarse con sus padres.
