FROM THE EDITOR DEAR READERS,

“Students shouldn’t be fearful of systems put into place to protect us.

But, here we are.”

There’s so much going on during this issue that I feel like I could write a whole book. The end of the year is creeping up on us fast, and if we blink, we just might miss it. But, I want to take this space to write about our centerfold over gun laws in the U.S. It’s not uncommon for students to make conversation about the day after the Parkland shooting. I know that my friends and I have had multiple conversations, some in the last few weeks, about the day that fire alarm went off.

My blood turned cold when it sounded during fourth block, the day after Parkland. I remember my friends’ uneasy glances around the room. As we made our way outside, I started receiving several text messages from my friends reading: “This is how the shooting happened yesterday.”

Students were panicking, teachers weren’t letting students leave their rooms. On the next Monday, when the fire alarm went off again, the same thing took place. The students in my fifth period class protested against the teacher, almost refusing to leave the room. It was bad timing for two smoke detectors on consecutive days to malfunction, but the truth is, we shouldn’t have to be afraid of fire alarms.

Students shouldn’t be fearful of systems put into place to protect us. But, here we are.

This cover story idea was sparked by multiple recent incidents, but the most important aspect was the date. Tomorrow is the twentieth anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting.

Twenty years, and our federal government has done little to nothing about the way guns are regulated in our country. I believe this needs to change.

I encourage you to really look into the centerfold story and develop your own opinion on the topic.

What are the benefits of taking a foreign language in high school, and what does it do for students in their future?

ather than spending her first year out of high school at a university, senior Becca Hiller plans to put her language skills to use on a mission trip to Haiti, where one of the languages spoken is French.

Students that may be in a similar position to Hiller can see the potential opportunities that being in a foreign language provides.

“I just think it’s really important,” Hiller said. “I really want to learn as much as I can now that I have that opportunity.”

Hiller has taken the language since seventh grade, and she recommends that everyone continue foreign language classes in high school due to the benefits it can bring.

One benefit of taking a foreign language at SHS is that it can help lead to receiving an Academic Honors Diploma, as it is a requirement for this diploma that future graduates must take two years in two languages or three years in one language. Some students and teachers, however, believe the benefits from taking foreign language in high school lie

According to a survey conducted

by The Journal of 203 students in Foreign Languages, 72.3% are planning to take a language next year.

Of the students surveyed, 39.6% are in an upper level class. “(Teachers of world languages have) all benefited so much from it,” German teacher Chris Sponsler said, adding later on that. “We want kids to go deeper into the language so that they have more opportunities.”

Senior Lauren Stucky originally wasn’t sure if she wanted to continue taking Spanish after fulfilling the requirements due to wanting to take another AP class. However, since she decided that she wants to minor in Spanish, she realized that it would be best not to miss a year of taking the language and potentially falling behind.

Stucky’s sister studied abroad in Spain, a fact that influenced Stucky to pursue Spanish. Stucky believes that being bilingual is a very beneficial skill to have in life that helps broaden an individual’s knowledge.

“More than anything, though, I think it makes you a smarter person because you have to think in ways that you’re not

used to, and you honestly learn a lot,” Stucky said.

Last year, the Foreign Language department introduced a National Honor Society chapter for students who have continued to take a language past the requirements. The society is a way to recognize students’ efforts for sticking with the language and to honor all of the hard work that they have put into it.

There are many benefits to taking a foreign language, according to Sponsler. One is that students can choose to spend a year abroad. If a student chooses to do so in Germany, for example, when they come back to the U.S., they will have received a

certificate that allows them to go into the German University System, which is essentially free college.

“I’ve had a student spend his junior year in Germany,” Sponsler said. “That was really kind of cool.”

According to Indiana Department of Education’s EL specialist Georgina Mayorga-Schneider, there are a lot of benefits when it comes to an economical aspect. In a student’s future, employers are going to want to hire people who reflect the customers that they’re serving.

“Being able to serve your customers as bilingual is going to make you so much more appealing to future employers,” Mayorga-

Schneider said.

There is more to it though than just the economical side. Being bilingual is a huge asset in today’s society and allows you to communicate in a multilingual world. It fosters tolerance and community by getting people to interact better with neighbors and colleagues.

“Communicating with one another, whether you’re speaking in English or whether you’re trying to understand different languages, is a first step in understanding an acceptance,” Mayorga-Schneider said. “So, I think learning a language helps to better understand someone else’s culture and starts to chip away at bias attitudes that might be present in today’s society.”

t the age of 10, senior Priscilla Garcia realized that she had an interest in camera work and making videos. She says that she would watch fan-made videos of artists and re-edit those published videos with online editing programs.

Through the use of such programs, Garcia taught herself how to make and edit the videos she produces. With that experience, Garcia launched her first channel titled “Priscilla” on YouTube.

“I was a very young, influenced

human being and looked up to these Club Penguin (YouTube) accounts,” Garcia said. “Taking my inspiration, I decided to make my own stuff because I figured that if people were doing it, I could do it, too.”

However, those first experiences with creating and editing sit-down style videos on that channel are no longer available for the public to watch, as Garcia has taken them down.

“I mean it’s something I enjoy doing, and I don’t ever want to stop

doing it,” Garcia said.

The next time that Garcia created videos on YouTube, under another channel titled “Priscilla Vlogz,” wasn’t until the end of her junior year. Garcia mentions that this is when one of her best friends encouraged her to pull out her camera and record some footage of the 2018 Coffee House, which was the first of her new style of videos: vlogs.

videos, like her Coffee House vlog because it gave her a way to stay connected with her cousins after leaving Mexico.

“They (watched) my videos and (they were) like, ‘Hey, you should actually do vlogs. You are actually good at them,’” Garcia said. “I thought how fun would it be to make videos knowing my family over there is watching.”

Garcia continues to add to her channel.

There, Garcia posts vlogs of her trips, experiences and daily activities, which she videotapes and edits with her phone. She just posts whenever she feels the need to.

Garcia mentions vlogs have become the most common type of video she currently produces, as a result of a lack of professional equipment. In spite of this, Garcia hopes to be able to expand the content she can create, possibly bringing back a former style of videos.

“In the future, when I start doing (sitdown videos) again, I would hope that the content I make will be more relaxed,” Garcia said. “Just an average Joe talking about controversial things, topics and Q&As or whatever.”

In addition to her family, Garcia says that she is also motivated and inspired to continue her hobby by her friends and viewers. One of her biggest motivators is her best friend, senior Alyssa Smith.

“I really like (this) one because I’m driving, and I’m a bad driver, and I guess you kind of see that.”

Smith mentions that she supports Garcia’s interest by watching her videos, encouraging Garcia to upload and giving her confidence boosts when needed.

“As soon as she told me that she made a channel, I subscribed immediately, and I was like ‘notifications on, got to watch them all,’” Smith said. “I love her videos.

I find them hilarious and each time she posts one it’s like a little surprise, and it makes my day.”

Smith mentions that sometimes Garcia will share concerns about videos with her.

If Garcia does express a negative feeling or is having a bad day regarding either filming or editing, smith will encourage Garcia with kind words to motivate her.

The other source of motivation and inspiration Garcia draws on is her other viewers. She enjoys the comments that her viewers leave on her videos, including the negative ones because it shows that they are watching her content.

“Just knowing people care to view them is what makes me keep going,” Garcia said.

“I mean I have very (few) viewers, but I get a lot of inspiration from them.”

One of Garcia’s viewers is her other best friend, senior Cory Mulinaro, who watches her vlogs to put herself in a good mood. Mulinaro says that Garcia’s hobby is both “cool” and “out there,” as vlogging

is not a common activity people do. She believes that Garcia could advance her hobby further and make it bigger than it is now since she’ll have more reasons to vlog when she goes on to college.

“Priscilla’s videos are really funny, and she works very hard to make people happy and to make them laugh, so I try to take that from them,” Mulinaro said.

While Garcia’s overall interest for camera work has mainly fueled the ambition behind creating and expanding her YouTube channel, Garcia says that she, too, can see herself elevating her hobby and going big with it. Garcia mentions if that were to ever happen, then she would maybe consider a career from her hobby, not necessarily seeking fame or fortune though.

However, what Garcia does know is that her time spent on making videos is a long-run endeavor, and for the time being, she’ll keep her hobby as just that.

She notes that she wouldn’t use her time any other way if she didn’t take time to make videos or vlogs.

“I think vlogging is just a part of (me),” Garcia said. “It’s just another extension to who I am, and I think if I didn’t do it, I’d still be doing what I (normally) do every day. I’m putting it out there for everyone to see.”

Music ‘n Musings Loss does not come without growth Column by Rachel Bayler

This last Monday marked a year since my grandpa’s passing. It was a year that seemed like both a second and a century, a year full of major life changes and accomplishments that I wasn’t able to share with him.

I struggled to adjust to only seeing one grandparent when we visited and watched as my family slowly processed their grief, whether by taking down pictures for a few months or having to take a moment alone to gather strength and be there for each other. Those first few months were some of the hardest, and I sometimes found it easier to retreat within myself and push it to the back of my mind so I’d be able to move forward and make it through the end of the school year. A lot of the time it felt like this melancholic going through the motions was the new norm.

As I persevered through my grief, I was able to find hope in the little things. I started to spend more time outside and even tried my hand at gardening (rest in peace, miscellaneous herbs). When I’d see my younger cousins, their constant laughter and high energy lifted my spirits even when I was all too aware of the empty chair in the corner.

These acts of searching for the good and lovely things in the midst

of the sad and devastating helped me to slowly pick myself back up from the heavy blow I’d been dealt.

During this period of restoration, a song I used to listen to almost daily was “Chiquitita” by Abba. In a lot of ways, it really represented my own journey, both within its lyrics and music. The song revolves around a friend pleading for “Chiquitita” to open up and let herself start to heal after suffering some heartbreak. The singer laments how prior to being hurt, Chiquitita was full of self-confidence and vigor, but now seems like she’s “broken a feather,” becoming “enchained by her own sorrow” and turning into a different person, much like my own experience right after my grandpa’s passing. But as the song progresses, and the music goes from slow and reflective to driving and upbeat, hope arises once more, and the song becomes one not of lament but of encouragement.

The words of encouragement that were meant to offer strength to the subject of this song helped me realize how I could overcome my grief. My favorite line, “Chiquitita, you and I cry / But the sun is still in the sky and shining above you,” filled me with such an immense amount of hope that it would pick

me up out of my slump. Just think about what it’s saying: You can be sad, you can mourn, you can miss the person you’ve lost immensely, but don’t let yourself forget that there is still a world around you.

It’s a world full of beauty and happiness, ready for you to go out and tackle it. The sun still shines, the world continues, and you have to continue too. Finding the constants in the world, like the sun and sky and earth around you, and choosing to recognize the little moments that brighten days helped me heal. I still miss my grandpa a lot, and nothing is the same without him, but my loss also led to my growth, which is something I’m immensely thankful for.

As life goes on, and we experience more and more heartbreak and loss, it will become harder to pick yourself back up again and trudge on. But it can be done. Whenever it feels too overwhelming, stop for a minute, lift your face up to the sun that’s still shining on you in the deep blue sky, and remind yourself to “sing a new song, Chiquitita” and to dwell on the happy memories and the love you shared with your lost loved one rather than the pain you feel.

PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE Vocational schools should not be seen as subpar

Every day, at almost exactly 11 a.m., I leave to go to the Central Nine Career Center. Central Nine is a vocational school that is partnered with SHS to offer qualifying students an opportunity to receive training in a certain field or craft. For example, I’m in the Computer Tech Support “career pathway,” and as a result I’m going to earn two industry certifications by the end of the year. I chose to go to Central Nine as a way to further my education, even though not everyone views going to a trade school as something that qualifies as an educational advancement.

According to the U.S. Department of Education Consolidated Annual Report, Indiana only reported 165,205 students participating in Career and Technical Education, or CTE, in 20152016. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that there were 668,916 people between the age of 18 and 24 in Indiana in 2015. That’s a little less than a quarter of eligible Hoosiers being enrolled in a CTE course.

From personal experience, I feel that some may view a vocational school as being the place where the dumb kids go, but this is not the case.

Sure, some of the kids going aren’t college-bound, but that’s a personal choice, not because they don’t have the opportunity. Vocational schools not only offer a way to receive training in career paths such as heating and cooling, construction and mechanics, but also telecommunications, information technology and visual design, all of which can lead straight into the workforce and offer graduates a way to earn money for themselves or their family. Some schools, such as SHS, foot almost the entire bill for their partnered vocational school. Students sometimes only have to pay exam fees, or in some cases just the general student fees.

Exposure to these career fields is beneficial to students. Using time in high school to see some of these professions firsthand and gain a little knowledge and experience will help students make their mind up when it comes down to selecting a college or other post-secondary option. Students may be exposed to career possibilities they have never even considered to be something they are interested in and end up liking it a lot by sampling a year in the industry, and they can

solidify choices if they are already familiar with whatever career they plan to pursue.

In fact, most schools in Marion County offer their students an opportunity in some form to achieve certification or training in a career pathway. This newfound focus on career pathways being offered to students isn’t actually all that new.

These courses have existed before, but I think that they’re becoming more relevant than ever to the general student, not just the prior stereotype of the struggling student with no other options. With college becoming more expensive by the day, students will do what they can to cut costs, whether that is cutting college out of the picture and going straight for the workforce or taking classes to knock out maybe a year or two (if they are lucky) off their bachelor ’s degree.

These students are no lesser than others. They aren’t dumb, nor are they lazy. These students are hardworking and deserve to be seen as equals.

When I first walked through the doors of SHS back in 2015 as a freshman, I had no idea what or who I would come across in my four years at this school. Of course, I had typical ideals and plans that I had envisioned and thought about constantly. But as my high school career nears its end, it’s clear to me that the way these past four years have played out doesn’t even come close to matching up with what I had originally planned.

Most of my plans had to do with things that I would accomplish and what I would be known for at this school. I remember I wanted to break the school record for most stolen bases or most home runs hit in a season when softball rolled around.

I wanted to be surrounded by all of these incredibly popular people and wanted to have a good reputation with all of them with hopes that it would make me more popular in the long run. I would always feel pressured to be a part of all of

these hyped up things such as school dances or activities outside of school that everyone made a big deal about and eventually I started worrying about what I wore to school and how I looked or appeared to others constantly. I’d even find myself doing things such as second guessing posting a picture on Instagram because I was afraid not enough people were going to like it. Sounds ridiculous, right?

Now as an 18-year-old “adult,” I look back on some of the things that my 14-year-old self thought were vitally important and realize that none of those things were even remotely close to being important at all. I was trying to find myself and I figured high school would show me how, and it did, just in a different way than I had expected. If high school has taught me anything, it’s been the ability to find myself authentically and see what is truly important and what truly matters.

When I would post a picture on Instagram and get a decent amount of likes on that particular picture, yeah, it boosted my ego a little bit.

But that “happiness” I was feeling didn’t last long at all because it wasn’t genuine.

Several people look for happiness in pointless, materialistic things, especially in high school. But I’m here to tell you, those things don’t matter nearly as much as they are made out to. It wasn’t until I stopped caring about those things that I discovered the things that truly do matter and make me genuinely happy. And I can tell you right now, it’s not likes on an Instagram picture.

I find genuine happiness within the way I treat others and by simply

surrounding myself with people and things who make me happy.

When I finally stopped caring about superficial high school elements, I was able to let go and completely be myself. I wear what I want, listen to whatever music I want, I stand by what I believe in whether or not everyone else agrees with me. I hang out with who I want. I take people for who they are and give them a chance rather than instantly shadowing them off based on what others think of them, choosing to love them as they are. I post what I want without a care in the world to how many likes I get on whatever I put out there, and I can’t describe how good and refreshing all of that feels.

I found genuine happiness when I realized that what matters in high school and in life in general is not what other people think of me, it’s what I think about myself and if I’m content with the person that I am towards others.

When I’m 35 years old, I’m 99.99% positive that I’m not going to be dwelling on the fact that I only got 275 likes on a picture I posted that I was banking on getting over 300 on, and most people won’t either. In five-10 years, no one is going to care that you didn’t dress up for pajama day, no one is going to care that you had a crush on that one “weird” kid, no one is going to care that you didn’t wear name brand clothing, no one. However, people will care what kind of a person you were and the impression you made on them by the way you treated them and others. So why not make an authentic, genuine impression? If there’s anything you strive to be remembered for, be remembered for being kind to others and always knowing that you stayed true to yourself.

You can’t be yourself when you’re disguising parts of yourself with elements desired by others. Being yourself and investing your time into the people and things that you genuinely love is the key to finding both yourself and true happiness.

Coaching has major impact on players’ enjoyment

In sports, there are a variety of aspects in the game. Players, practices, gameplans and coaches.

What if I told you that there is really only one of those four aspects that can ruin a sport for a kid? Which one would you guess?

If you guessed the coach, then you would be right. Now I personally have had my fair share of coaches, some of them being great, some being adequate and some being just flat out horrible. I have always been one of those kids that tries to get along with the coaches and have a good time throughout the season. I know when there is a bad coach when not only I but the team as a whole isn’t able to do either.

I fell in love with the game of baseball at around 4 years old. It has been my passion for the past 13 years.

Most of my coaches helped build me into the player I am today, and for them I am very grateful. But there have been coaches that I have had to play under that have almost put me on the verge of quitting the one thing I have

always been passionate about. These are the coaches that have killed the sport for me. Going through that was easily one of the most heartbreaking things I have ever been through.

During those years under those coaches, I dreaded going to practices and games. I was always told day in and out that “hard work will get you on the field,” and yet, no matter how hard I worked in practice, staying after to get more swings in and take more ground balls, I wasn’t given the opportunity.

In 2016, The Odyssey ran an article titled “The Coach That Killed My Passion.” There was one major line in this article that stood out to me the most. This was when Madison Trout, the writer of the article, stated, “My passion was destroyed when a coach looked at me in the eyes and said, “You could go to any other school and start varsity, but you just can’t play for me.” I haven’t had anything like that happen to me, but coming from an athlete’s perspective, hearing those words would’ve destroyed me.

Now, there is another aspect to bad coaching than just not getting playing time. Bad coaches have favorites and make it obvious that they do. Coaches showing favoritism brings all the other players down.

According to an article in The New York Times, 75% of children who start a sport by the ages of 6 or 7 will quit by or before the age of 15. Obviously, bad coaching isn’t the only reason for that high amount of kids quitting. But, if I had to put money on it, I would say a good amount of it is.

To all the coaches out there, my one message to you would be don’t make everything you do miserable for players. Don’t exclude kids that are trying their hardest. Don’t give kids false hope if you don’t mean it. Understand that the kids you are coaching are human. They are going to take in whatever you say to them, and each and every one of them is going to process it differently. Be more mindful of what you say and do.

The Journal Address Sexual education should be broadened

The small town of Allendale, Michigan has recently come into the national spotlight for resisting a push by the Sex Education Advisory Board to have a more inclusive curriculum in public schools. This has sparked a debate not only in Michigan but in classrooms across the U.S. about what should be included in middle and high school sexual education.

Acceptance of more thorough sexual education began in the 1980s after the AIDS epidemic. Government and educational institutions sought to broaden public knowledge of contraceptives, STD prevention and reproductive health.

They began to pump millions of dollars into funding programs to warn of the dangers of premarital sex and promoting abstinence for all young adults in the U.S. There are two approaches to this topic: abstinence-only focused and comprehensive sex education.

For the majority of sexual education mandated place in schools across the US, abstinence-only education has been focused on and maintained for decades.

According to the 2014 CDC School Health Profiles, “fewer than half of high schools and only a fifth of middle schools teach all 16 topics recommended by the CDC as essential components of sex education.” This shows a huge gap of quality in sexual health education and the need for a better, more complete coverage of sexual and reproductive health education in this country.

Because of this, we, The Journal, believe that abstinence-only sexual education is ineffective and detrimental to the public health of society and prevents young people from fostering

their own ideas about what’s right for their body. Continuing this type of sexual education actually has a more negative than positive effect as it leaves teenagers unable to make informed decisions and protect themselves. Instead, schools should offer more comprehensive sexual education as a way to accurately and effectively educate teenagers so they can stay safe and healthy.

According to a study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, “rigorous research has documented both the lack of efficacy of AOUM (abstinence only until marriage) in delaying sexual initiation, reducing sexual risk behaviors or improving reproductive health outcomes and the effectiveness of comprehensive sex education in increasing condom and contraceptive use and decreasing pregnancy rates.”

A study from the Texas Freedom Network observed that 83% of schools in the state taught abstinence-only sex education or no sex education at all in 2018. Perhaps consequently, the teen birth rate in Texas is almost double the national average.

Abstinence-only sexual education doesn’t prepare teenagers for the realities of being sexually active. Sexual education shouldn’t be about pretending teenagers will wait until marriage to have sex. While some may wait until marriage, that’s just not realistic in the current age.

The Committee of Adolescent Health Care notes that in a study done on abstinence-only programs, the programs “reported no increase in the risk of adolescent pregnancy, STIs, or the rates of adolescent sexual activity compared

with students in a control group.”

Abstinence-only programs seem to have no significant advantage compared to comprehensive sexual education. While the government has extensively funded these types of programs for decades, these antiquated methods should be shed to better adapt to issues current teenagers are facing.

Things have changed a lot since the introduction of AOUM curriculum, with “70% of adolescent females and 65% of adolescent males have had sex by age 19,” according to a study published in 2002 by the Guttmacher Institute. With millions of young adults coming of age every year and being able to be more autonomous individuals in society, they should be informed about the issues that will affect them throughout their lives.

Comprehensive sexual education includes information about preventing sexual diseases, reproductive health, contraceptives, sexual orientation and personal safety. This curriculum should be age appropriate, medically accurate and relevant.

Comprehensive sexual education teaches teens how to be safe and healthy when they do begin to have sex, whether that be before or after marriage. By preventing the right information about sexual health to be distributed to teens, we’re not allowing them to use this information to their advantage and not make the same mistakes made previously.

Teenagers, by being more informed and comfortable with the information they’re being presented, can be more responsible with their sexual health.

W

hen the fire alarm went off at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999, Paula Reed was teaching class. Her class followed procedure and calmly went outside, like always. In just a few moments, kids were running by screaming, “There’s a gun! There’s a gun!” Reed, on the farthest side of the building from where the shooting was happening, was in total disbelief.

After the administrators confirmed the shooting, she began ushering the students over a fence into the neighboring park. They were directed to crouch between cars. The next couple of hours were spent rallying kids in safe spots and reuniting them with their parents.

Some reunions never happened.

When a police force took over, Reed went to the community library to watch the TV footage of the event.

That’s when the severity of the situation hit her. She realized that among the victims were most likely past students of hers, and after a student told her that one of the students she was close to, Rachel, had passed away, she went into complete denial. She claimed the student was lying and walked away.

She later apologized for her initial reaction and asked the student if he was sure. At that point, other students she knew had gathered around, and they confirmed what had happened.

“They took us right past her body,” the students said, according to Reed.

“She was outside, and we went right past her. It was her.”

She attempted to talk to Rachel’s mom but was stopped and told, “You cannot tell her.” Following that moment, she learned of the passing of many more of her students and colleagues.

“I went home, I watched television,” Reed said. “I kept hoping I would see some of the kids that I was told I would never see again. And that’s when I realized I had taught one of the shooters as well.”

The Columbine High School massacre was one of the deadliest school shootings in American history, with a total of 13 people dead.

Nineteen years later, on the other side of the country, another fire alarm went off in Parkland, Florida. It was another school shooting, one of approximately 50 since Columbine. This time, the death toll was 17.

“(The death toll) was so close to ours,” Reed said. “I haven’t watched television news since April 20, 1999.

But I do read the newspaper... And I just lost it. Completely lost it. I couldn’t even go to school the next day.”

OUR GUN LAWS NOW Twenty years after the massacre at Columbine, gun laws are still a major debate in America. Not many federal laws have been changed.

Because every state has its own set of laws when it comes to guns, they can differ from the federal laws.

Before Columbine, Colorado’s gun laws were not strict, but there have been modifications since then. Colorado has made changes to the sale of guns at gun shows, which is where the four weapons the Columbine shooters used were purchased from. In addition to that change, people in Colorado must have background checks before purchasing a gun at a gun show, according to Giffords Law Center.

History of gun legislation in US Assault Weapons Ban, which prohibited semi-automatic firearms and large-capacity ammunition magazines for civilian use. The law expired in 2004 when Congress chose not to renew it. As of 2019, people under 18 are not allowed to purchase or be in possession of a handgun, but they are allowed to have a longer barreled guns and semiautomatic guns, like an AR-15. With this, however, there are a number of federal laws on who can purchase or possess a gun. For example, a convicted felon or a person who has abused drugs is not allowed to be in possession of any gun.

In Indiana, a person who buys a gun does not need a license to purchase or own a firearm, and they also do not need to register the gun, according to Giffords Law Center. Differing from federal laws, a convicted felon in Indiana who is considered to be “non-violent” can possess a firearm, but they cannot buy one.

One of the main debates when it comes to guns is concealed carry, or the ability to carry a weapon in a public place. All 50 states allow concealed carry, but under different circumstances and qualifications.

Acquiring a license for concealed carry in Indiana is relatively simple, as the application is an online form.

According to a study done by Guns To Carry, nearly 800,000 Indiana residents held permits allowing them to carry guns in public.

CHANGE FROM AFAR In other places following mass shootings, the laws have become more strict. On March 15, two consecutive terrorist attacks occurred at mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. Fifty people were pronounced dead. Less than a month later, New Zealand’s parliament voted to make changes to the 1983 gun laws, prohibiting militarystyle semi-automatic weapons and

parts that can be used to assemble prohibited firearms.

“Tragically, the attack exposed (a fundamental weakness) in our laws,” the Minister of Police of New Zealand, Stuart Nash, wrote in an email to The Journal. “Too many people in this country had access to these dangerous firearms for no legitimate purpose, and at significant risk to the public.”

Nash personally believes that owning a firearm is a privilege, not a right. He says that it is necessary to prevent potential danger by removing the most dangerous weapons from the community.

“I believe one of the primary duties of government is to ensure the safety and wellbeing of its citizens and to allow them the ability to go about their lives free from harm and free from the fear of harm,” Nash wrote.

Information from Time Magazine with 119 votes in favor and one vote against. The one member of Parliament who opposed the legislation was concerned about the speed at which the change was taking place, not the intent of the change, according to Nash.

New Zealand’s actions were partially influenced by changes made in Australia after a mass shooting in 1996, according to The New York Times. After a gunman killed 35 people near a popular tourist site in the Tasmanian town of Port Arthur, the prime minister at the time, John Howard, introduced a federal law to officially make guns a privilege, not a right. Other countries have been known to change their gun laws following a mass shooting as well.

For example, at the end of 1997, the British government effectively banned handguns following a school shooting in Dunblane, Scotland in 1996.

Nash recalls that young people showed great affection and support towards the victims and their families after the attack. He believes that students and teenagers play a big role in the changing of laws. He claims it is important to demonstrate characteristics and actions that will ensure racist actions and thoughts will not be present.

“Safety means being free from the fear of violence,” Nash wrote. “But it also means being free from the fear of those sentiments of racism and hate, that create a place where violence can flourish. And every single one of us has the power to change that.”

was founded by the survivors of the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. One of the cofounders, Ryan Deitsch, uses his skills as a journalist and a filmmaker to further the mission. He is using his personal experiences to be an advocate for others and help voice his opinion over the current gun laws.

“We’ve seen a lot of gun-sense advocates enter different fields and speak out for all different sorts of issues that all combine to generally, what gun violence is,” Deitsch said.

“Really, what I feel that March for Our Lives has brought to the table is making sure that we aren’t so much just talking about one part of this issue, like so many groups have done for so long. But we’re talking about all parts of this issue. ” Deitsch sees the lack of change in legislation since Columbine as a very concerning issue. He believes that students should not feel unsafe

in their cities or schools. He says this generation is tired of the fear.

“We are an entire age demographic of people that have faced the issue of never feeling safe in a building,” Deitsch said. “Never feeling safe in a hall of learning. Never feeling safe in a movie theater. Never really feeling safe. And, although, of course, that doesn’t apply to every single person in our generation, that is significantly higher than others. Because just as our grandparents may have faced duck and cover, we face code reds.”

The main focus of this organization is gaining the support from young people who share opinions about this topic. There are multiple March for Our Lives chapters in every state, and anyone is able to join by entering their zip code on the March for Our Lives website. Deitsch's advice to invoke real change is for people to do anything in their power to get their point across, just to make their voice heard.

though is truly just make sure (you) stay alert when it comes to laws and proceedings, if there is something that is going to hit the floor in your state legislature, if there is something that is going to hit the floor on the federal level,” Deitsch said. “Be sure that you’re paying attention to that because when it comes to phone calls and emails and letters, they do listen.”

In the future, March for Our Lives will focus on continuing the conversation about gun violence. Deitsch intends to keep on with the fight until it is won.

THE DEBATE Other groups see no need for the fight for stronger gun laws. The National Rifle Association, for example, is staunchly opposed to any restrictions on the Second Amendment.

Formed in 1871, the NRA was created in order to “promote and encourage rifle shooting on a scientific basis,” according to the NRA website.

The NRA created shooting ranges and youth programs, which were focused on educating students on firearms and training them for competitions. Not only do they train young people, but they also train gun owners nationwide.

According to the NRA, as of today 125,000 certified instructors train over a million gun owners every year.

The NRA also created a foundation that collects money to fund grants that are presented to different programs and organizations.

Therefore, members of the NRA

are not eager to enact legislation that they see as an infringement of their constitutional right.

“It’s an association of like-minded folks that want to make sure that (their Second Amendment) right is protected...,” Indiana State Senator Justin Busch said. “People pay their dues, like a lot of people do, to associations for things they are passionate about.”

Busch, a Republican senator for Indiana State Senate District 16, is a lifetime member of the NRA himself.

He states that the NRA has never had a say in his voting record or tried to push him to lean any certain way when bills are in front of him.

Similar to people involved in the NRA, there is a large amount of people in the U.S. who want to keep all of their rights when it comes to guns. This could be for reasons such as protecting themselves, for an activity like hunting or for their job.

Brian Ludlow, owner of gun store Indy Trading Post, believes there should be an option to have more lenient gun laws.

“I think there should be less really...”

Ludlow said. “Here, people have to jump through hoops to buy a gun.

The guys out there that are robbing or shooting people are stealing guns or getting them in other ways. There is nothing that is going to stop that from happening.”

The opposition, however, is of the opinion that having stricter gun laws would be beneficial for the United

States and its citizens. Deitsch shares this belief.

"The gun laws are too weak, the gun lobby is too strong, but hopefully if we get in that mix, the gun lobby will be weaker, our laws will be stronger, and our country will be better because of it,” Deitsch said.

PRESENT AND FUTURE GUN LAWS As there has been very little advances in gun laws across the nation in the last 20 years, there have been some new laws recently introduced.

On Feb. 27, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 bill was passed in the House of Representatives. The bill makes it a requirement for there to be background checks on every person who purchases a gun. According to NPR, this bill gives the FBI more time to do background checks and slows down the pace when someone is attempting to purchase a gun. This includes people who buy guns in stores, at gun shows and on the internet.

Individual states have been making changes in 2019 as well. California has raised the minimum age requirement to purchase a gun, and Illinois has put an act into effect that allows guns to be taken away from people considered dangerous to themselves or others.

According to Busch, there have been multiple bills presented regarding gun control in Indiana, but they almost always die in the committee.

WHY HAVEN’T GUN LAWS CHANGED? Although some believe that changes are needed, others believe that having more gun laws would not make a difference, but rather that making sure the right people own and use guns for the right reasons is the most important. For some, making sure more people are trained and educated when it comes to firearms is the real change that

would be effective.

“I don’t think stricter gun laws are going to change anything,” Ludlow said.

“It’s not guns. It is the people who are misusing them.”

With change only on the local level and state level, Deitsch believes it is up to the people to demand more impactful change from the government in the future. He claims that legislators do listen, but people need to stand up for their opinions in order to see a difference.

“We’re not just talking about what happens when a gun enters a school,

we’re talking about what happens when a gun enters a synagogue, what happens when a gun enters a mosque, what happens when a gun enters a movie theater, what happens when you’re just walking down the street and you just turn down that wrong alley,” Deitsch said. “Why is there a wrong alley?

Why are you in the wrong place? Why is there a wrong place? And, it’s just really identifying that and making sure that we’re all standing together on these issues because change won’t come unless we demand it.”

swarm Miller. Despite playing only two minutes and 36 seconds during the game, Payne was among the first to rush to Miller and celebrate.

This would foreshadow much of Payne’s season as he only averaged less than two minutes of playing time per game throughout his senior year.

With this, came frustration.

“Some of the frustrations (are) not really being able to be out on the

floor as much in order to show college coaches what I can do,” Payne said.

So, why do players like Payne stay committed to their team, knowing that they won’t receive much varsity playing time?

Payne has been playing basketball and football all his life, but like others at SHS, he hasn’t received consistent varsity time for sports in high school.

While some would consider quitting

in this situation, he has stayed committed to his coaches and teammates. He believes sports keep him out of trouble and says he has never had doubts or considered quitting either sport because of playing time as he feels God has a plan for him.

“With him and everything else, I could… be the best that I could be,” Payne said.

Another senior football player, Josh Lane, has been playing wide receiver for the high school team all four years, but he also hasn’t received much varsity time.

According to Lane, while this is upsetting, he understands he has had a lot to prove, and he couldn’t quite cut it. However, he hasn’t stopped playing or working hard and will pursue a collegiate football career.

“I’m not going to dwell on it,”

Lane said. “I’m going to use it as motivation for the future.”

According to Lane, he and other non-starters still have a role on the team. Football is a physicallydemanding sport, and injuries are not uncommon. Lane and other teammates have to stay ready on the sideline because if any starters get injured, the substitutes have to get in the game and prove themselves.

“All it takes is one injury, and you’ll be in the lineup,” Lane said.

According to head football coach Brandon Winters, seniors like Lane are the ones that help the starters to be as good as they are. The players that aren’t starting varsity on the football team learn how to run other schools’ offense and defense throughout the week at practice.

Then, the starting varsity team plays against these practice squads, which helps them prepare for a

specific opponent that week.

“They support each other,” Winters said. “They make each other better.”

Like Payne and Lane, senior Sophia Shook has been a part of her sport since before high school but didn’t receive the varsity playing time that most players desire.

According to Shook, while she might feel a little embarrassed at times, it doesn’t matter that much to her. She has been playing with her teammates for years, and she says it would be selfish for her to quit on them just because of playing time. Shook claims it doesn’t matter if she’s on varsity or junior varsity because she still works as hard as she can.

“If I’m still having fun, and if I’m still enjoying my spor t, I’m going to do whatever I want,” Shook said.

The rough road ahead

With little experience, the SHS boys golf team heads into the season

T

hrough last year ’s spring sports season, the SHS boys golf team finished with a solid winning record of 7-3 in dual and three-way meets.

However, this team was led by four seniors, who are now graduated. With them being gone, the team is put in a position this season where they are lacking in experience, making it difficult to maintain past success.

In 2019, the SHS boys golf team is composed of a mostly new starting lineup. “(The team) doesn’t have the golf experience, and they don’t have the experience from the offseason tournaments,” head golf coach Don Manning said. “It’s gonna be an all new territory for the team.”

According to Manning, the roster is made of seven total players. The team has little experience with junior Matthew Muñoz, the only one with varsity experience, and senior Zach Bozarth being the only returners from last year.

Muñoz is primarily being used this year as a tournament golfer while this is Bozarth’s first year on varsity.

A lot of the weight will be on Bozarth’s shoulders as a returning four-year player.

“It’s definitely a new experience (and) a big jump forward,” Bozarth said.

Even though being in this position is new for Bozarth, he says being on junior varsity and watching past varsity players has helped him identify his weaknesses.

The remaining five players have never played a year of high school golf before.

Freshman Gavin Tidd has been playing golf all his life, but not in high school.

Unlike Tidd, this is junior Tre Morris’s first year golfing and decided to join as it is a lifetime sport. All he says he has to do is learn how to swing properly, which is included in their practices.

With the level of this team’s experience, Manning chooses to focus on “the basics,” as he puts it.

He is working with each golfer in finding their strong point and trying to

excel in that. Along with this, Manning is having the team work a lot on the short game, 75 yards or closer because that is where they “get the biggest bang for the buck.”

Through their first two competitions, the team has struggled as Manning predicted. Their first match against Beech Grove on April 11 resulted in a 211-162

loss. On April 13, the day of the Cardinal Ritter Invitation, the team combined for a score of 436 through 18 holes, placing 11th out of 12.

“My goal towards the end of the season is that (the golfers) get the hang of how it feels in a tournament and start to be a little more competitive with the other teams,” head coach Don Manning said.

In the Long run Mythical GOATs

The argument in the sports world that is responsible for the most friendships lost, relationships ended and assault and battery charges is a simple one. Who is the greatest of all time, more commonly known as the GOAT? For centuries, this topic has been wreaking havoc in the lives of fans across all sports. People can get very defensive and nasty when fighting for who they think the GOAT in a particular sport is, and I know from experience.

I used to fight for Kobe Bryant as the best basketball player to the death. Now I simply say he is my favorite player and pay my respects to the other greats in the game, because I don’t believe it is possible to label one player as the greatest.

Now, there are some obvious exceptions to this. In individual sports, like track and field, swimming or golf, where all players are going against a common opponent, you can easily say one person is the best based on their times or scores.

However, I see this argument occur more often than not in some of the more popular sports like football, basketball, baseball and soccer. One thing all of these sports have in common is that they are TEAM sports. This means that you can’t point to one player as the greatest, because they all have a squad of supporting cast members behind them.

This is most prevalent in football.

Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees are all some of the great quarterbacks from this era that are also all in the conversation for greatest of all time. Aside from having accurate cannons hanging from their shoulders, these quarterbacks have other assets that make them great. An offensive line and receivers. Without an offensive line to protect them long enough to get a good pass off or receivers to run the correct routes and catch their passes, these mighty quarterbacks would be nothing.

All 11 guys on the field must do their job in order for a football team to have any type of success, so to pick one of those players and call him the greatest football player does the sport an injustice.

The same principle can be applied to my main man, Kobe. He’s considered one of the greatest players ever largely due to his six championships. In his first three, he had help from the giant known as Shaquille O’Neal, one of the most dominant big men in basketball. It’s hard to say where Kobe would be ranked if he only had three rings. This just further shows how all of these “GOATs” require a strong supporting cast to help get them where they are.

The other reason why I don’t believe in GOATs is because the competition from the past to now has evolved so much. I see this the most in basketball. Players like Wilt Chamberlain and Oscar Robertson may have been able to dominate in the 60s and 70s, but the game has intensified since then. In today’s game, I think Wilt the Stilt and The Big O would probably be just average players and not the legends they are known as.

As sports advance and players’ methods of becoming more athletic and more skilled at their sport move forward, players are moving further and further away from the skill level of some of the older players who are considered GOATs. I get that one of the highlights of being a sports fan is arguing over who is better than who, but the whole GOAT argument doesn’t hold up. It’s okay to have favorites, but there doesn’t have to be a ranking of the single best players in sports. Instead, we should learn to recognize that there are certain players that dominate their sport for a certain amount of time, or there are a number of greats at that specific role, but to label one single player the GOAT in a sport is, in most cases, ridiculous.

SHS CREATIVE WRITING CLASSES RELEASE ONLINE LITERARY MAGAZINE

T

his past March, the creative writing classes hatched a third publication to the nest at SHS: The Chirp. SHS has existed as a twopublication school for just shy of 100 years. However, as opposed to The Journal and The Anchor, The Chirp is intended to represent the purely creative side of the student body, according to English teacher and adviser Tim Jamriska.

“I wanted to create a better creative culture at SHS, and I wanted to give the writers in the school a platform to showcase their talents and a way to express themselves,” Jamriska said.

The Chirp is an online literar y magazine that publishes many different types of creative content, including poetr y, art, novel excerpts, flash fiction and

short stories, Jamriska says. He adds that the main purpose of The Chirp is to show off the talent SHS has to offer that doesn’t get much appreciation. Originally, he wanted a way to put his creative writing classes’ work out there for others to see, but he also had the intention of encouraging more people at SHS to get involved in creative writing.

According to Jamriska, there are 28 people working together across the two creative writing classes. These people write, edit and then post their content on the website. The Chirp already has published an assortment of stories and art on its website, thechirpshs. com, and featured student pieces cover the home page.

Although the creative

writing classes may edit their submissions, students are given creative liberty over their work.

One piece that has been recently published is the science fiction stor y called “Inside the Mind of a Broken Machine,” written by senior and Instagram manager of The Chirp Morgan Riddell. “‘Inside the Mind of a Broken Machine’ is a story set somewhere in the far future,” Riddell said. “It’s about a robot that has fallen in a hole and has ended up stuck.

Throughout the story, the robot reminisces about his past life and how he misses it.”

According to Riddell, she is excited for The Chirp because she loves to write and produce different types of art. She also says that it’s a great way for student creations get

noticed by colleges and other people in the school.

Anyone in the school can submit their work to be published by The Chirp. Senior Carson Smith, The Chirp’s website editor, has been writing “One Flight to Paradise,” a stor y that he has been posting periodically on the website as he finishes writing each chapter. “‘One Flight to Paradise’ is about a family in 2028 that go on a week and a half vacation to the Maldives.” Smith said.

“A bunch of things happen to this family, and I’ve had a blast writing it so far since I’m really interested in tropical places.”

According to Smith, he plans on writing seven to nine chapters of “One Flight to Paradise,” and two of them have already been posted to The Chirp. Smith says that he has come to enjoy writing for The Chirp and that he has had a lot of fun creating and sharing his experiences with others. But because he is a senior, he hopes that he can help kickstart the publication

and get more people interested before he graduates.

“Since this is the first year of The Chirp, I hope that we can build a solid foundation for future students to use and take advantage of,” Smith said. “I think that this is a great tool and a great opportunity for students to express themselves and show off the talent that SHS has.”

hroughout the late 2000s, entertainment networks, such as Disney Channel and Nickelodeon were swarmed with popular television shows and movies that showcased characters who were loved and cherished by young people all across the world. However, around 2010,

several of these shows began to progressively conclude, and the stars that rose to fame because of their role within these programs moved on to new projects.

Celebrities, such as Miley Cyrus, who portrayed the teen pop sensation Hannah Montana, and

groups like the Jonas Brothers, who took part in popular Disney films, like Camp Rock and even their own TV show, “Jonas,” were only just a couple of those celebrities who moved on.

Cyrus broke out of the Disney scene and pursued her career without the Hannah Montana disposition, and brothers Joe, Nick and Kevin Jonas all eventually took the same route and pursued their own projects away from Disney.

With years passing by and all of these stars taking part in new, different projects away from the Disney and Nickelodeon scene, the idea that any of these stars will resort back to their early stardom roots slowly became less likely.

Until now.

On Feb. 28, The Jonas Brothers’ Instagram was recreated, and it was announced that the brothers were making a return, starting with their new single, “Sucker,” which was released on March 1.

the brothers all began individually promoting their return and reactions surfaced all across Twitter.

However, the Jonas Brothers aren’t the only ones who are setting out to make comebacks. At least, that’s the way it appears.

There have been speculations that due to Cyrus’s new look and recent social media activity, there is a possibility that there is a soon-tobe Hannah Montana comeback and reboot of the television show.

Cyrus has stirred rumors about a comeback when she cut and dyed her hair in the style of Hannah Montana, and she documented it on her social media accounts. On March 28 she tweeted a video that showed her singing along to the Hannah Montana theme song, “The Best of Both Worlds” with alternate

lyrics. However, a “Hannah Montana” comeback has not been confirmed.

After the Jonas Brothers announced their return and Cyrus’s videos people began to speculate that their returns hopefully indicated the return of several other past Disney stars and reboots of their projects, such as “Wizards of Waverly Place” and “Good Luck Charlie.”

Although the return of these shows and their stars are just speculations, a more definite return is coming from actress and singer, Ashley Tisdale, known for her iconic roll in “High School Musical” as Sharpay Evans.

Tisdale announced on March 27 that she would be on May 3 releasing her album, “Symptoms,”, which will be her first album since her 2009 album, “Guilty Pleasure.”

from Nickelodeon stars Drake Bell and Josh Peck, who appeared together as brothers in the 2004 show, “Drake and Josh.” The two are currently working on a project together, the details of which haven’t been announced. However, Peck told Entertainment Tonight reboot Free-use imagethat froma Google of their show, “Drake and Josh,” is not on the table.
