FROM THE EDITOR DEAR READERS,

“Not every issue runs smoothly, and this just happened to be one that didn’t.”

I’m absolutely thrilled to present to you our fourth issue of the year. I cannot express the amount of hard work and dedication that went into this issue. I can already see our stories, pictures and designs getting better and better. But, not ever y issue runs smoothly, and this just happened to be one that didn’t.

Before I get into the craziness of this issue, I would first like to pass on my condolences and sympathies as we’ve had two of our classmates pass away since our last issue. While it is unfortunate that these stories have to be covered, I encourage ever yone to read their stories and take a moment to remember the people that they were.

I know that both Tyler and Juwan will be missed by their loved ones.

While we prepared to write about those who have passed away, our staff began brewing what we thought would be our biggest centerfold of the year. And then, we heard the news that President Donald Trump would be coming to our school. Just like that, all of our plans changed. The only problem: two-thirds of the staff was at the annual journalism convention in Chicago while the President was here. This not only made the event difficult to cover, but also took away two school days to work on the issue.

We relied on our staff back home to cover the event, while my managing editors, Media Manager and I tried to stay up to date from the convention. We were messaging and posting from four hours away, hoping that ever ything was going well. Luckily, the staff at home did great.

That brings us into the cover stor y for this issue.

As mentioned before, with the political leaders of our countr y here in Southport, our school became the center of a divided countr y, where our students came face to face with that division. Our cover stor y this issue revolves around this topic.

Please take time to read all of the incredible stories presented in this issue, such as our Spanish stor y over El Día de los Muertos, the stor y over the Alumni Association Room and many more.

TWO LOST

'He could've done something great one day'

espite his frequent struggles with school, Tyler Hall was determined to graduate this year.

“If I don’t do nothing else in this life, I’m gonna graduate,” he would say, according to his girlfriend, sophomore Aaliyah McCool.

Come May, Tyler will graduate-- but his attendance at the ceremony won’t be possible.

“His dad is walking across the stage for him to get that diploma...,” McCool said.

"It’s going to mean a lot to me because he actually got to do it. He graduated. He made it.”

On Oct. 1, Tyler passed away in his home due to an overdose. He is survived by his parents, Edward and Stephanie Hall, his sister Laci Hall, his girlfriend Aaliyah McCool and his niece, nephew, uncle, grandparents and great-grandmother.

Many of Tyler’s family and friends will remember him laughing, smiling and cheering up others. McCool says that beneath his seemingly rough exterior, Tyler had a big heart and a degree of wisdom about him, shown by how he communicated with others.

“He was really young, but his dad taught him a lot of things he liked to share with people,” McCool said. “He had a lot of real things to say.”

Tyler’s former English teacher, Natasha Bynum of Southport Middle School, recalls him being the class clown and far more intelligent than he liked to let on. She says Tyler was a “people person” who “knew how to make authentic connections.” Academically, he had difficulties, but Bynum suspects this was due to him not wanting his peers to see how capable he really was. She had made a connection with Tyler, to the point where he could confide in her.

“He’d always say to me, ‘Don’t worry, Ms. B, I’m a good kid,’” Bynum said, clearing her throat. “And he was a very good kid.”

While working two jobs and attending school, Tyler also managed to find time to spend with his older sister, Laci Hall, and her children, Leyah and Anthony. Laci says in an email to The Journal that he brought joy to their family’s lives, and she will cherish each moment he spent with her children. She describes Tyler as her other half and feels “lost” without him.

In his free time, Laci says Tyler enjoyed fishing and camping. He also had a love for shoes, owning at least 50 pairs. Along with having many other memories of Tyler, Laci recalls long conversations with her brother and simply enjoying his company.

“He would always come over to eat all my food, and we would stay up laughing for hours,” Laci wrote. “He was someone I told everything to, and he understood me more than anyone.”

Senior Delaney Halcomb, a close friend of Tyler’s, describes him being like a brother. She says he acted like he was a hard person, but in reality, he was very sweet. For her, this was evident in how he could calm her down when she was upset.

Halcomb emphasizes how unexpected Tyler’s death was and how it never should have happened. She says that if he would have known how loved he was, he might not have been reckless with his life.

“He always would say that he was gonna die young, but I always thought he would get his stuff together and live up to his potential…,” Halcomb said. “He could’ve done something great one day.”

CARDINALS 'Any time with him was a good time'

he big smile that filled Juwan Smith’s face won’t ever leave senior Jaylen Martin’s mind. In the short time that Martin got to know him, he says Juwan was like a cousin to him, and without Juwan around anymore, he feels like he’s missing a part of his life.

“It hurts,” Martin said.

On Oct. 8, just a little over a month before his seventeenth birthday, Juwan was shot. He passed away that day, which rocked the lives of his friends and family.

“I feel like someone has snatched my future from me,” his father Howard Smith said.

Juwan was “everything” to his father. He made sure that if Juwan was getting off track, he would get him back on. Juwan lived with Smith for the last five years. Smith says that in the last two years of living together, “(his) son did a (180).”

Smith believes this turnaround was encouraged more this fall, when Juwan transferred to SHS. Smith says the school had a good impact on him.

“I think Southport got to see a side of my son that I really didn’t see a lot of,” Smith said.

Juwan enrolled into SHS in September, which is when counselor Erin Shimp first met him. From his start at SHS to just before fall break, Juwan showed change that became apparent to Shimp.

Shimp saw that he became more comfortable with her and with his teachers, knowing they were there to help.

“I think when he first came in he just wasn’t so sure about us and if people were going to help him or care about him,” Shimp said.

His science teacher, Rachel Brunsell, can attest to this realization that he finally felt cared for. The last day Juwan was in class with Brunsell, she made it clear to him that she always pushed him to do his work because she cared about him.

“I was like, ‘Hey, get back to work,’ and he was like, ‘Man, you must care about me an awful lot,’ and I was like, ‘Yes. Yes, I do,’” Brunsell said.

Brunsell and Shimp are not the only ones that realized his worth. Juwan’s brother-like friend, sophomore Hayden Puckett, and Martin both say Juwan was a good rapper and basketball player. They both say he had a potential future in those fields.

Even with such a short time at SHS, Juwan was already trying to get involved in the basketball team here.

“If he wasn’t playing basketball, he was either in his room, freestyling, rapping or something…,” Martin said.

Juwan even tried teaching Puckett how to rap. Even though Puckett wouldn’t consider himself a good rapper, he enjoyed his time with Juwan, especially his laughs. When he thinks of Juwan, what he pictures him doing most is laughing. From the smile Martin won’t forget, to the laughs Puckett will always remember, the times they spent with Juwan were good.

“Any time with him was a good time,” Puckett said.

SHS junior takes on several responsibilities for fall musical

he auditorium is almost completely silent. Some people are in the audience watching, waiting for their turn. Dancers are on the stage mimicking one specific person’s movements to the music of “My Fair Lady.” Ten minutes pass, and the dancers finish their routine, then sit down.

come and go into the wings, but one character in particular remains on stage throughout the entire show. She sings.

She dances. She acts. She is Lilly Leslie.

“I did choreography last year as well, so it’s not my first rodeo,” junior Lillian Leslie said. “However, it is my first time being a lead and doing the choreography.

There’s a lot of pressure on me. I know a lot of people that are coming and I definitely want to do the best I can do.”

Leslie is the star in the SHS fall production of “My Fair Lady.” She is playing Eliza Doolittle, the lead female role in the musical. “My Fair Lady” follows the social class transformation of Eliza Doolittle from a working class girl to a proper British lady.

Aside from being the lead in the production, Leslie is also a cochoreographer and helps create the dances that go along with the songs in the show.

Leslie says that her friends in theater and drama class have been really supportive of the roles she has taken on,

but has been supported especially by SHS choir teacher, Katherine Doty. Doty has been helping make sure that Leslie has been doing what she needs to in order to better herself for the performance in terms of her singing and using different accents in her dialect.

According to Doty, Leslie and her work on a lot of vocal techniques, due to the fact that Leslie not only has to speak in a different accent for her role, but has to sing in it as well.

“There’s a dialect issue too,” Doty said. “The Cockney dialect that she has to speak in and sing in for half of the show goes against every rule of singing there is.”

Leslie has to speak in two different accents for her role as Eliza Doolittle-- a Cockney accent and a British accent. Eliza goes through a transformation throughout the show, and that change is reflected in the way she speaks.

“Learning the accents weren’t hard, but not having them mix together is,” Leslie said. “Sometimes I let my Cockney accent slip when I’m doing my British accent, just like Eliza Doolittle in the story and how she has to figure out when to say something in Cockney and when to say something in British.”

To overcome this problem, Leslie says she is consistently practicing the accents and tries to just know her character in the show well. According to Leslie, she will repeat her lines over and over again until she gets them how she wants.

Junior Justin Tidd, who plays the role of the male lead in the production, says that being one of the leads in a musical production is a lot of work in itself. The performer has to memorize lines and

stage directions along with many other tasks. While Leslie takes on these tasks, she also has to add on the fact that she has to act as a leader to the other performers. Aside from working hard, Tidd says that Leslie is absolutely fantastic and he has a massive amount of respect and admiration for her, due to how much work she puts into her craft.

“She is the lead in the show with almost as many lines, if not more, than any other lead and she choreographed,” Tidd said. “I have so much respect for someone that puts that much work in tow make a show for everyone great.”

Doty says there are several adjustments that Leslie has had to make in terms of how she approaches her role and dialect as Eliza Doolittle. However, Doty says that Leslie is directable and works hard at allowing herself to prepare as she comes in everyday prepared, takes notes, and even works on stuff at home.

“She’s (Leslie) one of the best,” Doty said. “She puts in the work outside of rehearsal and she comes into rehearsal ready to move on.”

While Leslie admits that taking on the responsibility of having the lead role in the production as well as being a choreographer is a bit overwhelming, she is confident in the position that she is in and is looking forward to the show.

“The overall production is going amazing. The set looks great.

All the kids worked really hard, and I think all of us genuinely care about this production. I think it’s going to be amazing and I’m really looking forward to the show.” Leslie said.

BRAND new mindset SHS boys basketball team gains intense and experienced head coach

uring his W1B2 period, new head basketball coach Eric Brand prefers to spend his morning stretching, sweating and strengthening while he pumps iron with his players as opposed to taking the morning off.

Brand doesn’t lift just to stay in shape. He lifts with his players to show his team he’s willing to work hard, and so he can feel the same as his players do.

Brand coaches with an intensity and mindset that the SHS coaching staff hasn’t possessed in recent years, says junior point guard Brevin Jefferson. Brand plans to translate the knowledge he’s obtained from playing basketball in high school, college and the professional level to make the Cards the best they’ve been in years. “(Brand is) putting (SHS) back on top,” Jefferson said.

According to Brand, basketball has been a part of his life as long as he can remember, and he has collected a number of accolades and records throughout his career to show for it.

After graduating from Bloomington South, Brand went on to play basketball for Bethel College from 1996 to 2000. According to the Bethel College athletics website, during his time at Bethel, the Pilots had a record of 135-22, won three national titles and one runner-up title for Division II basketball. While at Bethel, Brand broke the record for points scored (2,696), field-goals made (1,018), free throws made (659) and games played (157).

On Sept. 15, 2017 Eric Brand was inducted into

the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame. Bethel College inducted Brand into their Hall of Fame in 2003 and retired his jersey number. Brand later went on to play professional basketball in Austria for four years and then in Australia for one.

“I’ve had quite a few (coaches) in my day so I can hopefully take a little bit from each one and transfer it to help these young men be successful,” Brand said.

Brand has also had his fair share of experience in coaching. He began his coaching career at Baylor University. He went on to coach at Tyler Junior College, Texas State University and New Mexico State University.

More recently, he coached for two years at Warren Central and one year at South Bend Riley before moving to SHS. With Brand as their head coach, the South Bend Wildcats went undefeated through the regular season before losing to Carmel in the semi-state game on March 17.

Brand believes that his level of experience helps to make him more reliable as a coach to his players. Senior Chaz Hinds agrees, and states that since Brand has already played at high levels, his words have more value than a typical coach’s would.

“He’s been everywhere a lot of us want to be,” Hinds said.

Brand stated that his philosophy on coaching is that the Cards simply need to play harder, smarter and faster than the other team. To Jefferson, Brand is the type of coach that just wants to get to work, get serious and get the job done. Jefferson believes that the Cards have been working harder this offseason than last year’s.

He also believes that the Cards will win more games this year because they are coming in with a different mindset: play hard and work hard. Every day at practice is hard and the intensity is always top-notch, according to Jefferson.

“I love being able to take the challenge of outtoughing and out-working people,” Brand said.

Brand faces a new challenge with the loss of two starters from last season. Adding on to that, the Cards are coming off two rough seasons, finishing with records of 6-16 for the 2016-2017 season and 7-15 for last year’s season. The Cards will fly alongside Brand in their season opener on Nov. 20 against Perry Meridian at 7:30 p.m.

In the Long run Let’s talk LA-Bron

By Michael Long, Sports Editor Something that rocked the sports world this summer was NBA superstar LeBron James’s decision to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers and play for the Los Angeles Lakers. I have such mixed emotions about this move, so it hit me especially hard.

One half of me is disappointed. I don’t consider myself a big LeBron fan, but it’s hard to say that he’s not one of the greatest (dare I say the greatest) players of all time, so I have to admire him on a certain level, especially after this last NBA season.

Averaging 27.5 points, 8.6 rebounds and 9.1 assists per game, LeBron literally carried his team to the Finals for his eighth Finals appearance in a row. Now, when I say he carried his team, I mean he CARRIED them! During the 2018 playoffs, LeBron averages led the league in points per game (34) and playoff assists (198) and he had the best playoff player efficiency rating (32.2) all at the age of 33.

There’s no doubt the man is a great basketball player, but what I find intriguing is that he is this generation’s best.

Kobe Bryant is my favorite player, but I never got to see him truly become great because

his prime was between 2000 and 2010, when I wasn’t following the NBA much at all.

However, with LeBron, I have gotten to witness him cement himself as one of the best players in history. His journey to greatness is one that I’ve found interesting, but his move to LA has chipped away at it.

If you look at other all-time greats like Kobe, Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, the one thing they all have in common is their legacy with their team. As a sports fan, I see Lebron’s legacy as him playing in his home state, but this is now the second time he has chosen to leave Cleveland, making it harder and harder to pinpoint his legacy.

On the flip side of things, I, a Lakers fan, am psyched to have the best player on the planet right now on my team.

The Lakers are one of the most iconic and legendary teams in the league. They’ve produced more great players and great teams than any other franchise out there, but lately, they haven’t been so hot. Let’s face it, they haven’t had a winning record since the 20102011 season. However, this has not shaken my love for the Lakers, and with LeBron on the way, there is a new hope.

To break it down, there are two different halves of me when it comes to LeBron heading to the Lakers: the sports fan who is disappointed to see a great player lose some of his GOAT credits and the optimistic Laker fan who’s hoping LeBron can pull the historic franchise out of its slump.

E

n los Estados Unidos, el mes de octubre trae pensamientos de una temporada para fantasmas, trucos y golosinas. Con todos los fantasmas, duendes y golosinas confitadas, puede ser difícil imaginar otra forma de celebrar. Y, en México, la misma temporada podría no ser tan diferente como se podría pensar.

El Día de los Muertos, un día festivo celebrado a fines de octubre en México, actúa como un día para recordar a los que han pasado y celebrar sus vidas.

A SCHOOL DIVIDED President Trump's rally creates division among students

s the crowd waited for the doors of the SHS Fieldhouse to open on Nov. 2, they talked quietly among themselves in the line that wove from the doors, through the front yard of the school and into the east parking lot.

Vendors had tents and tables set up selling “Make America Great Again” merchandise. Many of those waiting in line dressed patriotically to show support for their country. The line grew more condensed as more arrived. When the clock struck 3:55 p.m., the doors opened and the crowd roared with shouts of joy.

But an event that seemed to be united was ultimately divided.

When President Donald Trump’s visit was announced on Oct. 29, social media flared up with people that were excited about the event and others that were disgusted with the thought of the rally being held at SHS. Inside the Fieldhouse, attendees chanted “Build the wall!” while protesters lined the outside of SHS and chanted “Love, not hate, that’s what makes America great!”

LEADING UP TO THE EVENT According to Pew Research Center, the division between Democrats and Republicans over political values hit record levels during Barack Obama’s presidency and increased even more during Trump’s first year in office.

Students at SHS feel they have been affected by the differing views of the political parties. Senior Alexis Zrebiec feels that the lack of acceptance of others views has influenced the country’s divide.

“If someone has a different opinion than me, they will completely block me out or not like me, and I don’t think that’s how it should be,” Zrebiec said.

According to Principal Brian Knight, when he received a call from Superintendent Pat Mapes notifying him of the possibility of SHS being the venue for the rally, his first reaction was ‘Oh my gosh. You mean the President?’ Then, he says he was

somewhat concerned about the idea, seeing as the results of the 2016 Presidential Election were very divisive. Knight believes, however, that it was a unique opportunity for students.

“Regardless of your political views, or whether you agree or disagree or like or dislike, it’s not something that people get to experience very often,” Knight said.

Others disagreed with the decision. The night before the rally, three PMHS students decided to give their opinion a voice through painting the rock in front of SHS with a rainbow of color, in order to express their feelings that Trump was not welcome. PMHS junior Grace Nash wasn’t able to attend the protest on Friday, so her mom suggested that she paint the rock as her own form of protest. Nash told PMHS junior Claire Marlatt her plans for painting the rock, and Marlatt The Journal's experience: asked to join her, along with PMHS senior Abby Hoover. According to Marlatt, the group also painted the rock at PMHS to put aside the two schools’ rivalry and express Dylan Torres, Reporter a common, united message.

In his address to the crowd, Trump stated that he has given citizens more healthcare security. He claimed that the Republicans have worked to lower prescription drug costs and get critically ill patients the care they need. In short, he discussed many things that he believes the Republicans are doing right and the things he feels the Democrats are doing wrong.

“A blue wave would equal a crime wave, very simple, and a red wave equals jobs and security,” Trump said.

Two days later, Obama spoke to the people of Gary, Indiana about all that was at stake, mentioning issues like healthcare. Obama reminded the attendees of all the things that the Democrats did for healthcare, including the Affordable Care Act and passing a law that says insurance companies can’t discriminate based on medical history. He said that the Republicans did not support the Democrats in these decisions and that they would continue to do so. He also suggested that the crowd go out and vote.

“Everytime we gain a victory, we move the country in a more generous, more progressive direction,” Obama said. “Usually there is somebody pushing back wanting to preserve the status quo.”

The Journal's experience: Russell Peterson-Womack, Reporter “CNN sucks! CNN sucks! CNN sucks!” chanted thousands of Trump supporters in the SHS Fieldhouse on Nov. 2.

After sitting among the thousands of other attendees, I immediately got the feeling of being at a big concert. There was loud music, people dancing and singing, chanting and a lot of people hanging out with their friends.

When the political figures began their speeches, it seemed that all the crowd members were on the same page. It seemed that everyone chanted with everyone else, no matter if it was positive or negative.

“USA! USA! USA!” the crowd chanted passionately.

It was clear that the crowd was united and passionate about almost everything it did, whether that was praising Republicans or bashing Democrats.

'Before I enter the building next time I am hoping you can thoroughly disinfect the premises.'

James Renick, SHS Class of 1967 When Trump’s rally was announced, 1983 SHS graduate Kelly Sawyers was excited to attend, as said through a text message to The Journal.

“Days leading up to the rally I had the night before Christmas feeling we experienced as a child,” Sawyers wrote.

1967 SHS graduate James Renick did not share the same excitement. He sent a letter to Mapes and The Journal expressing his disgust for Trump holding a rally in the Fieldhouse. Renick believes that Trump uses hate and fear to divide the nation. The Fieldhouse was a place that he remembered fondly, and to him Trump using it was insulting.

“I have followed SHS sports over the years and will continue to do so,” Renick wrote. “However, before I enter the building the next time I am hoping you can thoroughly disinfect the premises.”

These disagreements, according to Haag, are more than political disagreements. She believes the divide is also being influenced by race. She noticed that the rally crowd was not very diverse.

Despite her observations, she felt it was a positive environment.

“In the rally, everybody was being so nice to each other,” Haag said. “And obviously it was mostly Republicans, but they were all nice to each other and they were all accepting of your views.”

Hoover, one of the painters of the rock, found her experience to be less welcoming. She recalls people flipping off protesters, threatening them and spitting on the ground in front of them.

Although she says this was a scary experience, Hoover was glad she participated.

“There were a few people who stopped by just to hear our message, and if I impacted just one person, then I’d say it was a success,” Hoover wrote.

As opposed to Hoover, sophomore Chandler Wilson, who attended in support of Trump, did not find the event to be scary.

He wore a costume that made it appear that he was riding on Trump’s shoulders.

Wilson says that the reactions he received regarding the costume were positive and that many people wanted to take pictures with him. “(The costume) brought comedic relief to people sitting there on a dreadful day of sitting and waiting,” Wilson said.

Senior Sebastian Perez, who attended to observe and take advantage of the opportunity to see the President, experienced the rally differently than Wilson. Perez says he did not want to be seen associated with one of Trump’s complimentary signs, so he decided to tear his in two. Attendees at the rally got upset with him and began to shout racial slurs. That was when he was asked to leave, so he joined the protest that was going on outside.

Perez says he felt like he could let go of things that had been said to him because there were people with him that were also pushing for their cause.

“It’s way different being attacked with a huge group of people than just being attacked yourself,” Perez said. “I felt like I could brush off everything that was being said just because I had more people behind me.”

MOVING FORWARD

Trump’s rally proved successful, as Republican Mike Braun now represents Indiana in the Senate. During the midterm elections, the Republicans maintained control of the Senate, and the Democrats gained control of the House of Representatives.

could be seen as the country becoming more united, but he doesn't believe actual healing is taking place yet. He views more diversity in Congress, however, as a big step.

“I see it as the American people saying ‘No, we need people from all walks to represent us,’” Hanley said.

Senior Noah Fishel, a rally attendee, believes that the divide in the country could happen anywhere since people have different opinions. He hopes the results of the midterm elections can help move the U.S. in a more proactive direction.

“During the Obama administration, a lot of things didn’t get done because of the divided government, but hopefully (since) the Republicans have the Executive, the Senate and also the Judiciary, (and) with the Democrats having the House, … that will lead to some compromises,” Fishel said.

Government teacher Brian Dugger believes that the country could take steps to becoming more united. Dugger hopes that the U.S. is able to come up with a solution on its own without getting involved in a major conflict, but he isn’t sure if that’s a possibility.

“Hopefully it doesn’t take some terrible event for (the U.S. to become united),” Dugger said. “But history shows that that’s usually what has to happen.”

Totally hip hallway closure Teachers put the boogie in Ghost Hallway

s senior Katherine Boujee made her way to her first period class on Oct. 22, an obstacle stood in her way. She rounded a corner, climbed the stairs and instead of being faced with what would’ve been the Ghost Hallway, there were two large wooden doors blocking her route.

“I didn’t understand what was going on,” Boujee said. “I’ve always used this hallway to get to my classes. The administrative staff has finally lost their minds. There better be a good reason behind this because now I have to take the main hallway to get to my classes. That’s where all of the freshmen stand around like heathens. This is awful.”

Although Assistant Principal Anthony Artproject says the hallway was closed due to improper use by students and safety concerns, Boujee claims that is not the case. Boujee said that teachers who usually sit in their classrooms during their prep periods have started to leave their rooms and go to an “unknown” location.

When she forgot that her usual route had been closed, she made her way toward the Ghost Hallway.

She walked up to the doors before realizing her mistake and she spotted something “unusual” through the window. Boujee explained that it looked like there was a flash of gold but decided that it must’ve been the “awful lighting.”

“I swear I heard the thud of loud music and I saw what looked like disco lights near the far end of the hallway,” Boujee said. “A shadowy figure turned the corner as soon as I looked through the small window on the door. It kind of looked like Mr. Major. From a distance it looked like was doing the Shoot. Whoever it was definitely didn’t want to be spotted by a student and that’s the tea.”

Now, to further investigate Boujee’s claims, a team of five students has come together. These students met up after school one day and “devised a plan to check out the Ghost Hallway” according to Boujee, who is a friend of the members of the group. They are set on finding out the real reason the hallway was “mysteriously” shut down, according to senior Fred

Wenn, a member of the group. The group consists of Wenn along with sophomore Daphne Bloom, sophomore Shaggy Stone and senior Velma Smith.

“We call ourselves the Mystery Busters because we know they are lying and we are going to figure out the truth,” Bloom said. “This is totally not groovy. Students shouldn’t have to worry about what the teachers are doing during school. We’re not babysitters.”

Even though the so-called “Mystery Busters” violated many school rules, they found a way to enter the Ghost Hallway through the dock elevator located near the kitchen and loading dock. When the students finally entered the hallway, they did not understand what was happening at first, according to Stone.

“After my eyes adjusted to what was happening, I was completely flabbergasted,” Stone said. “I saw my geometry teacher and my chemistry teacher doing the boogie alongside Mr. Artproject. There was a whole crowd of teachers surrounding them. I couldn’t look too closely because the sight hurt my eyes. It was an old people mosh pit.”

According to Wenn, before the teachers noticed they were in the hallway, they ran back to the elevator to “escape the horror.” The students proceeded to call the authorities and report what the teachers were doing. Since the teachers involved technically did not break any laws, they were unable to press charges. The students also received no punishments for entering the Ghost Hallway.

Superintendent Patricia Compass was asked to provide a statement on the subject but declined.

Later on, Compass contacted Artproject and explained that she was upset because she did not receive an invitation to the “disco parties” that have been taking place in the Ghost Hallway since it has been shut down, according to Artproject. There hasn’t been any word on if the hallway parties have been terminated.

“We didn’t think it would be a problem since there weren’t any students in the hallway anymore,” Artproject said. “We would’ve gotten away with it too if it weren’t for those meddling kids and their need to get to class.”

The past presented SHS Alumni showcase Southport History at PTEC D

ecorated with old, threadbare letter jackets and picture collages of SHS alumni within large, black frames, the walls of the SHS Alumni Association in the PTEC building are lined from ceiling to baseboards with various forms of Southport memorabilia.

Within those rooms, there are tabletops slated with neatly positioned glass panes used to preserve newspapers and photographs aged by time. There are also large displays stocked with an array of SHS novelties. For example, the original lyric sheet to “Hail, Hail our Southport.” These furnishings, along with other fixtures, line the perimeter of the rooms and down the corridors.

This small three-room suite at PTEC has gone, for the most part, unnoticed and unseen. However, to keep the past presented, two men, David Ladd and Barry Browning, have continued to take care of the space, curating the room into what it is currently.

“It’s officially the SHS Alumni Association room,” Browning said. “I would call it a showcase of Southport memorabilia.”

When the room was first handed down to him, the entrance room of the suite was an office while the other two rooms were full of storage.

However, there is a bit more to the background of the room itself, according to both Browning and Ladd.

“This is kind of an outgrowth (from) when the school celebrated their centennial of the first graduating class,” Browning said.

Essentially, some members of the Alumni Association banded together in 1994 to celebrate this event. Then, members solicited stories and items from the Southport community to make all sorts of displays and presentations for the centennial. Having gathered the themed materials, the organizers decorated a room at SHS, which was where the items now in the room first were before the PTEC building.

“They asked for donations,” Ladd said. “A lot of people brought in stuff, but (the organizers) didn’t intend for it to be left (at the school).”

Everything in the room was left in place, according to Ladd, but that wasn’t what was planned. A couple years later that room was needed by the high school, so all the inputs were packed away in boxes for several years.

According to Browning, these boxes would be unpackaged in the summer of 2010 when Dr. Thomas Little, superintendent at the time, granted Cindy

Bertram, a retired SHS teacher and SHS alumni, the permission to move into larger rooms in the PTEC building. After the former users of the suites transferred to other rooms, the Perry Township and Southport Historical Society were given two suites- one given to SHS and Perry each.

Bertram and Georgia Stumpf, a retired SHS teacher and SHS alumni, alongside several others, began to piece together decade by decade memory collages and fill the display cases in the hall nearest to the room at PTEC, using the items stored away from the high school.

“Well, they didn’t want to get the room and not populate it. It would be like going on a date and not talking to her,” Ladd said.

In 2015, Browning became the official historian for the Alumni Association.

Browning was offered the position of board member for the Alumni Association. In taking up the opportunity, Browning had to terminate his role as historian, passing the torch to Ladd. Since January 2016, Ladd has served as the caretaker of the suite.

Together, though, they still continue the work of Bertram and others, having procured additional display cases and arranging the “SHS Museum” as it is today.

Browning and Ladd encourage anyone who wants to learn more about Southport history to come visit the museum at PTEC. They would also appreciate donations of Southport items to add to the collection.

Discover how SHS students use their musical passion to inspire others

s I listen to you breathe, I drift off into your heart,” it says in the song “Fluorescent Night” by The Troubadours.

The Troubadours, a band created by sophomores Denis Shrum and Scott Newton, was made to bring happiness to others through music.

The two band mates, Shrum and Newton, have been friends since sixth grade, but their friendship grew stronger when they started to create music together. At first the group didn’t know that they wanted to start making music, but they were passionate about music, so making it came naturally.

The band first started two years ago when Shrum called Newton saying he wrote a song and they should put it together.

And that’s the moment when their journey started.

The band has already posted a few songs on SoundCloud, and they also post sneak peeks of their future music on Instagram. Currently, they are trying different things, like adding somewhat of a rock vibe mixed with some folk to make it new.

“We make a little bit of everything,” Shrum said.

In the band, Shrum is the singer and lead guitarist and Newton is the bassist. Both of them can play several instruments like the guitar or the piano.

The group also writes their own lyrics for their songs. When

Shrum writes, he thinks about ways how people can connect with their music, but he also writes the music at a personal level, saying that if he likes it, there’s bound to be someone who likes it, too.

“I want to give a quick escape for someone,” Shrum said.

Newton often writes about the emotions he is feeling and what’s happening in his life at that moment.

“It makes me a bit emotional, depending on what we are writing about,” Newton said.

Not only do The Troubadours want to make music that is meaningful to others, they want to make something that is special to themselves as well.

Newton’s parents said that The Troubadours’ music makes them feel good, and it always takes them somewhere else.

But the idea of giving people joy is the most important thing because they want to allow others to feel inspired through their music.

Their overall dream, though, is to go big with their music, together or apart, because they know that they will still be there for each other no matter what happens.

“The music makes us happy,” Shrum said. “We get a chance to express ourselves in different ways.”

If you’re like me, today’s climate in America feels like one of constant negativity. I feel like I can never escape news of terrorist attacks, school shootings and just general evil within the world. All this negative energy becomes a drag and affects my mood and, frankly, my hope for the future.

The song “Who’ll Stop the Rain” by Creedence Clearwater Revival is one that I think perfectly encompasses this feeling. It reflects on the way sometimes it feels like the “rain,” or the problems in our world, never end. Though we offered many solutions, they are all wrapped in “golden chains,” made to look promising while actually being useless. Everything looks bleak, and it becomes easy to lose hope.

But that feeling doesn’t have to last forever. Even through the horrible, frustrating, confusing and tragic moments, we can still have a hope for a better world in the future.

SHS has been going through an interesting season for the past few weeks. President Trump’s visit brought many people’s feelings about our polarizing political climate to the surface, both on social media and at school. With this brought arguments, severed ties and all around tension.

Sometimes it feels like SHS has been turned on its head. But is this the way it’s going to stay? The Byrds say otherwise.

Their song “Turn! Turn! Turn!

(To Everything There Is a Season)” is a spin on the biblical passage Ecclesiastes 3:1-8. Regardless

of spiritual or religious beliefs, this passage is one that offers a remarkable truth; that there is a time and a place for everything and that changes will always come.

One of my favorite lines in the song is “A time for love, a time for hate / A time for peace, I swear it’s not too late.”

Thinking back to the events at the beginning of this month, and the division that engulfed many of our students, I find it a comfort to hear these words. Many things were said, many stances were revealed, many opinions changed and the atmosphere became one full of tension, and some of that tension still exists today. But this is just another of the many seasons of SHS’s lifetime. When something divides us, we still come back stronger in the end.

Even if the events of the last month didn’t necessarily have a major effect on you, it’s hard to ignore that our nation and our world are crazy places, full of crazy things and crazy people. Within everything we experience is the chance to learn that there is a time and a place for everything. A time for love and hate, war and peace, dancing and mourning, laughter and weeping and winning and losing. The good is paired with the bad indefinitely, and both must be taken in stride.

To everything there is a season, and everything serves a purpose.

Think of what bothers you about the world and remember that, with your help and willingness to make a difference, this too shall pass.

The truth is out there We are not alone in the universe

By Michael Long, Sports Editor First, I’d like to set the record straight about what type of person I am. I’m probably the most logical and fact-driven person you’ll ever meet. So, when I say aliens are real, that is a statement I can stand behind based on evidence.

The evidence supporting alien existence is overwhelming, and it’s shocking to me that some people deny the fact that they’re out there.

The main thing that makes me think aliens are out there is the sheer size of space. There’s simply too much real estate in our universe for there not to be life. An article on Space.com explains just how big the universe is, and it’s astounding.

According to the article, the European Space Agency released the most accurate map of the universe’s oldest light in 2013.

With this, scientists were able to figure out that there is a 13.8 billion light-year radius of visible space around Earth. That’s only what is visible. Let that sink in.

Another shock-factor the article mentions is that the universe is still expanding. We simply can’t be the only life in a never-ending universe. It would be a huge waste of space, pun definitely intended.

If those numbers don’t sway you, take a look at these. Physicist Dr. Don Lincoln wrote an article for CNN about whether or not there is alien life in the universe in January of this year, and in it, he discussed an investigation of our own galaxy, the Milky Way. Lincoln talked about the Kepler Spacecraft which NASA launched in 2009 to search for planets around distant stars.

It found that of the 100 billion stars in the Milky Way, over 80 percent of them have planets. On top of that, a fourth of those

stars have a planet in their planetary system that could allow for liquid water, the essential element for life.

The numbers support extraterrestrial life, no doubt. The odds of life being out there are simply too high, but what about all of the encounters people have claimed to experience? Abductions, alien sightings, UFOs, crop circles, we can’t blame it all on mental health and the government.

The first modern-age abduction story of Betty and Barney Hill in 1961, where the couple claimed to be abducted outside of their car in the back roads of New Hampshire, sparked the alien abduction wildfire.

Since then, millions of people have claimed to have had an encounter with extraterrestrial life. One of those people is Stan Romanek.

Romanek’s story is incredible. According to the Netflix documentary about him, “Extraordinary: The Stan Romanek Story,” Romanek has documented over 195 pieces of alien evidence. Some of these may be blurry pictures of dome shaped objects in the sky, but others give me goosebumps.

Some of Romanek’s experiences include abductions with the same threepoint indention in his back after each of them, pictures of what appear to be aliens hidden around his yard, videos of aliens in and around his house and unexplained knowledge of complex formulas such as the Drake Equation. In one of his abductions, he even came back with fixed ACL injury that his doctor couldn’t explain.

The evidence and odds supporting alien life is substantial to say the least, but this is a topic that should get taken more seriously. If we discover the life that’s out there it could lead to a new beginning or the beginning of the end. It’s really up to us to decide.

As a young woman in today’s America, I feel I can do just about anything that the average Joe can do. Women started with absolutely nothing, no rights nor any kind of privilege.

This includes restrictions on certain occupations, not being allowed to use their law degrees to the fullest, no working while pregnant and not being able to vote.

In 1981, Sandra Day O’Connor was the first female Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, marking a huge step in women’s rights. Now, within the next year, Kylie Jenner is expected to become the youngest self-made billionaire ever. There is no doubt that we have come a long way, but we sure did not get where we are by being irrational and radical. All throughout history, the goal has been, and continues to be, fighting for both genders to be equal, nothing more and nothing less.

Proponents of radical feminism feel the need to be superior and that overthrowing men is the only solution. True feminism is people advocating for equal rights for men and women on a political, economic and social basis. The only way changes will be made is fighting for equality rather than superiority.

“Lean out so we can actually just stand up without being beaten down. Pledge to vote for feminist women only. Don’t run for office. Don’t be in charge of anything. Step away from the power. We got this. And please know that your crocodile tears won’t be wiped away by us anymore. We have every right to hate you. You have done us wrong,” said Suzanna Danuta Walters, professor of sociology and director of the Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program at Northeastern University and editor of the gender studies journal, in her Washington Post article titled “Why can’t we hate men?”

People, let alone men in power, do not listen to nor do things for those who whine and insult them while doing so.

If men are apparently at the top of the hierarchy, why would you think attacking them would get through to them? Men are more than willing to take part in the feminist movement and want us to succeed but not when we are screaming at them saying we have every right to hate them. Not everyone feels that way, I know I definitely do not.

Claims such as “vote feminist women only” and “step away from the power” give true feminists the wrong image. That is not what true feminism is fighting for. That is unfair to us because the hate is given all of the attention. This makes them not want to help any of us, and we all get mislabeled as unreasonable.

Toxic feminism is truly hypocritical. Some women complain about men abusing their power and do not get me wrong, some do, but it is still not right to categorize all men as doing so. The #MeToo movement has brought a lot of disgusting men to light. But, there are awful people, both male and

female. Justice is not always served to those who deserve it, and sometimes justice is served to those who are plagued with false accusations. Let’s work together to fix both sides, rather than just one. Quite frankly, the system is a mess. This is no benefit to anyone.

America still has a long way to go with many things, of course. Women have made history and that is exactly what we will keep doing as long as we do it the right way. When someone is defensive, they are not listening to the other person. They are thinking of ways to defend themselves, which is a road to nowhere. Calm down, be reasonable, be logical and have respect for everyone.

There are plenty kinds of feminists, each having different views. No matter what you feel or what you are advocating for, ask yourself if this is better, worse or a part of the problem?
