Ecos Machico

Machico is a land of geographical diversity and is the municipality with the largest number of areas with protection status.

The ECOS Machico project was created in January 2021 to collect and spread knowledge about natural and cultural values, namely geodiversity, habitats, fauna, flora, landscape, history, traditions and identity.

Are sites that present notable characteristics and are studied using various scales.

Initially, 12 Ecosites were selected - Pico do Suna, Baía d’Abra, Fonte do Seixo, Foz da Ribeira Natal, Grutas do Cavalum, Portela, Penha D’Águia, Pico do Facho, Ponta do Bode, Prainha, Ribeira Tem-te Não Caias and Terra Baptista. The Ecosites (more than 40) are subject to monthly online voting so that the whole population can take part! There are 12 more Ecosites to date, including the Maroços Prismatic Disjunction with 49.4% of the votes.
