This issue feels a little special for us, because it’s our 50th. When we put together that very first magazine back in 2017, we certainly had no idea what lay ahead, but we’ve enjoyed every step of the road along the way to reaching this milestone. Over the years we’ve shared stories, met incredible people, and watched our patch of the world grow in ways both surprising and familiar.

Nottinghamshire has a knack for keeping its charm.

We’re also celebrating a few local milestones: Worksop College reaching an impressive 130 years, The Savoy marking 90, and North Notts BID continuing the journey they started right alongside our own first issue. It all feels like a lovely reminder that time moves on—but community, creativity, and curiosity remain constant.

Inside, we’ve gathered pieces that suit this thoughtful, wintry time of year. Erin McDaid reminds us that nature quietly gets on with its own celebrations, even in the darker months. And soon enough, the snowdrops will appear—those tiny, brave little things scattered across the Nottinghamshire landscape—a gentle cue that spring really is creeping closer.

February brings its own mix of traditions too: Valentine’s Day on the 14th (whether you’re a roses-and-romance person or more of a takeaway-and-TV type), and Shrove Tuesday not long after. Pancake Day is one event we can all get behind—particularly if your flipping skills are as questionable as ours. And this year also ushers in the Chinese Year of the Fire Horse, a symbol of energy and momentum. A nudge, perhaps, to be a bit braver or bolder than usual.

Keys In Harmony Piano enthusiasts recently enjoyed a rare opportunity to set a local and UK record in a one-time event that brought together a “piano orchestra”!

A total of 135 people signed up, with 111 pianos played during the recordbreaking event. Titled 101 Pianos, the gathering was open to players of all ages and abilities, offering the happiness of music-making at the piano. It took place towards the end of 2025 at Sherwood Phoenix Pianos, Mansfield (NG18 1QX), where participants performed two pieces together: Bach/Gounod’s Prelude in C/Ave Maria and Grieg’s In the Hall of the Mountain King.

There were many fascinating stories among the participants, including husband-and-wife teams, siblings, grandparents and grandchildren, a threegeneration combination, James Naish MP for Rushcliffe, a taxi company owner returning to the piano after many years, and some who travelled long distances to join in. Councillor Rowan Cozens, Deputy Leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council and Portfolio Holder for Heritage, Culture and the Arts, explained: “After our Alive With Music launch earlier this year, it is very apparent that musicmaking is important to people across our district.

It brings people together, improves wellbeing, and spreads joy.

“This fantastic community event allowed like-minded individuals to focus on the beauty of music and the many benefits it brings. It also highlighted the creative sector and supported fundraising to acquire a world-class piano for the Newark community.

“Stephen Pringle, founder of Sherwood Phoenix, studied piano restoration

at Newark College and now runs a successful business sending pianos across the UK and beyond.

I am delighted to have worked alongside him on this incredible event. The piano will be housed in St Mary Magdalene’s Church, one of the most beautiful buildings in Newark, following its restoration.”

Pianists often spend time practising alone, rarely meeting one another as other musicians do. This event was about more than breaking records – it celebrated the joy of playing, supported the local community, and will benefit learners, performers, and audiences alike when the piano is installed in St Mary Magdalene’s.

AwardWinner Mansfield Museum Celebrates.

Mansfield Museum and Art Gallery has won two honours at the Museum Development Midlands Power of Place Awards: Overall Excellence and Creative Collections.

The latter recognises the World of Birds exhibition, an internationally important taxidermy collection of around 3,000 specimens created by botanist Joseph Whitaker. Thanks to £76,700 from Arts Council England, items long kept in storage were restored and displayed in a modern reinterpretation.

The museum was also shortlisted for the Inclusive Impact Award for its work with disabled people and vulnerable women.

Councillor Stuart Richardson praised the team, highlighting the museum’s cultural value and the importance of continued funding.

New artist led independent shop opens in Hockley.

A new independent shop, Nook, has opened its doors within Arc Space, Hockley, bringing a fresh destination for contemporary art, handcrafted products, and unique gifts to the heart of Nottingham.

Founded by six local artists, Nook is a female led collaborative venture that celebrates creativity, craftsmanship, and community.

The shop will showcase a carefully curated selection of contemporary original artwork, hand crafted jewellery, ceramics, textiles, prints, and design-led gifts from a rotating selection of local designers and makers.

“We wanted to create a space that celebrates the talent of some of the best designers, artists and makers in Nottinghamshire and the surrounding area,” said Nook co-founder, Kate Scott.

Worksop College At 130 Safe Space Notts Worksop College at 130: A Legacy Rooted in Tradition. Marking 130 years at the heart of North Nottinghamshire.

Worksop College has just celebrated an extraordinary milestone – 130 years since its foundation in 1895. As one of North Nottinghamshire’s most recognisable institutions, the College has long stood as a cornerstone of the local community, education, and regional enterprise.

The College’s story began on land generously gifted by the Duke of Newcastle’s Clumber Estate. Since then, the site has expanded into the impressive 400-acre estate it occupies today – a landscape rich in heritage and a long-standing contributor to local employment and economic life.

Founders’ Day 2025 offered a moment to pause, reflect, and look ahead.

Pupils, staff, alumni, and friends of the school came together for a celebration rooted in tradition and symbolism.

A highlight of the day was the planting of 50 cherry blossom trees along the historic College driveway. Selected for their beauty and symbolism of renewal, the trees will bloom each spring as a reminder of the generations of Worksopians who have walked these paths – and of the future still unfolding.

Younger pupils also played a meaningful role, carefully burying a time capsule filled with reflections and mementos from 2025. Their contribution leaves a thoughtful legacy for future Worksopians, offering a snapshot of College life at this moment in time.

Reflecting on the occasion, Headmaster Mr Charles Bailey said: “For 130 years, Worksop College and Ranby House have stood as places of

learning, friendship and opportunity.

Today, we honour our past while shaping our future. The cherry blossom trees and time capsule are more than symbols – they are a commitment to the generations still to come.”

This anniversary year also marks the launch of the College’s refreshed values: Compassion, Integrity and Dedication. While newly expressed, these qualities have long shaped the ethos and character of the Worksop community – a continuation of a legacy founded on care, honesty, and perseverance.

Throughout its history, Worksop College has continually evolved to meet the needs of its community. From the building of St Cuthbert’s Chapel in 1911, to the transformative Shirley era of the 1920s and 30s, the post-war acquisition of Ranby House, and the introduction of co-education in the 1970s, each chapter has strengthened its position as a key institution in North Nottinghamshire.

Yet while this anniversary honours the past, the College’s vision is firmly future-focused. As the new cherry blossoms take root, they serve as a fitting symbol of Worksop College’s next chapter: inspiring young minds, nurturing character, and preparing pupils to thrive in an ever-changing world.

For 130 years, Worksop College has been woven into the fabric of North Nottinghamshire life. Its Founders’ Day celebrations reaffirm that its influence – on education, community, and local successes – will continue for generations to come.

A clearer route to support in the city centre.

A new website has launched to help people feel safer when visiting Nottingham city centre, with a particular focus on supporting women and girls. Safe Space Notts brings together details of accredited venues across the city where anyone can ask for help if they feel unsafe, unwell or harassed.

Created by the Consent Coalition and It’s in Nottingham, and supported by Nottinghamshire Police, Nottingham City Council and the Office of the Police & Crime Commissioner, the site aims to improve visibility of Safe Spaces, raise public awareness, and strengthen partnership work to tackle violence against women and girls. It also provides access to specialist resources and training.

Councillor Corall Jenkins said the initiative builds on ongoing work to ensure Nottingham is a place where women and girls feel safe and respected. She praised the reassurance Safe Spaces already provide and welcomed the website for making support easier to find.

Alex Flint, Chief Executive of Nottingham BID, highlighted the importance of safety within the city’s busy leisure scene, noting that the website will increase awareness of the Safe Space Pledge and reinforce efforts to ensure visitors have a secure and enjoyable experience.

Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Angela Kandola described the launch as a significant step in improving safety and visibility of support, emphasising the value of strong partnership working. Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Leona Scurr added that the website complements ongoing police efforts to tackle violence against women and girls and helps ensure residents and visitors feel supported.

More than 65 venues already feature on the site’s interactive map, each committed to offering a safe, welcoming environment.

Heights Strikes Gold Geoffrey Bond (sponsor) with newly-restored gravestone back in situ.

Restoring Pigot’s Legacy Restored gravestone honours the forgotten catalyst in Byron’s early career.

A short ceremony was recently held in the grounds of Southwell Minster to bless the newly restored gravestone of Elizabeth Pigot — a woman whose quiet but decisive influence helped shape the early poetic career of Lord Byron.

Elizabeth Pigot played a pivotal role in encouraging the young Byron to publish his first collections of poetry, yet her contribution is often overlooked. Living opposite him during his teenage years at Burgage Manor in Southwell, she became both friend and mentor. Having read his early poems, she urged him to have them printed in Newark, where his first four volumes were published by S&J Ridge. The building used by the printers still stands in the south-east corner of the Market Square, marked by a striking metal plaque.

While Byron remained in Southwell, Elizabeth continued to support his creative work, carefully copying and amending his drafts. She is now regarded as the first in a distinguished line of intelligent women who helped shape his literary output, a group that later included Mary Shelley, Claire Clairmont, Lady Byron, and Teresa Guiccioli.

For many years, visitors to the Minster grounds were unable to locate Elizabeth’s grave, as the inscription

had become entirely illegible. Thanks to sponsorship from local Byron expert and author Geoffrey Bond, the gravestone has now been restored and can be easily found on the south side of the Minster.

Bond said he was pleased to help honour Elizabeth’s role in bringing Byron’s early poetry before the public, describing her contribution as both significant and long overdue for recognition.

The restoration work was entrusted to D&M Masons Ltd of Nottingham.

The half-ton stone was lifted from the Minster grounds with specialist equipment before being machineground, hand-carved, and finished by skilled craftsmen. Michael Wright, Joint Partner at D&M Masons, said it was a privilege to restore the memorial and reflected on his long professional association with Bond.

Made from local sandstone that matches much of the fabric of Southwell Minster, the gravestone now stands as a fitting tribute to a woman whose influence helped shape one of Britain’s greatest poets.

The project forms part of a wider effort to highlight the importance of Southwell and Newark in Byron’s early literary journey, complementing the more familiar associations with Newstead Abbey.

The Heights Of Abraham recognised for outstanding visitor experience.

At the end of 2025, VisitEngland, the national tourism body, awarded the Heights of Abraham its highest possible “Gold” accreditation for excellence. The accolade — collected by Rupert and Sophie Pugh — marks a record-breaking seventh Gold award for the attraction.

The Gold award for overall excellence is presented to only a select number of tourism businesses each year, following rigorous judging by industry professionals. Other Gold winners in 2025 include the National Gallery and the Imperial War Museum in London, and the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. The Heights was the only Derbyshire attraction to receive the honour this year.

This latest achievement highlights the Heights’ consistent commitment to delivering outstanding standards across its cable cars, caverns, and hilltop estate.

Rupert Pugh, Development Director, said: “Standards across the visitor attractions industry continue to rise every year, but the Heights of Abraham has managed to maintain our outstanding accreditation through the hard work, exceptional hospitality, and dedication of our team. To secure Gold, we must achieve at least 97% across all areas of assessment. Receiving this award for seven consecutive years is a source of immense pride for everyone who works here.”

News of the award arrived as the Pugh family prepared for the second Lights of Abraham winter trail. Following its success in the previous year, the illuminated trail has been expanded with new features and effects.

One BID's Big Idea:

Putting Bassetlaw On The Map How Sally Gillborn MBE turned North Nottinghamshire into a destination for business, community, and celebration.

ack in 2017, North Notts BID made history as the UK’s first ever area-wide Business Improvement District, and we were there to cover it in the very first edition of Made. Since then, the BID has grown and evolved in incredible ways, supporting over 1,200 businesses across Bassetlaw and bringing the community together through a huge range of events and initiatives.

As we look back to the very first news feature that introduced readers to North Notts BID in our debut issue, it feels fitting that—now celebrating our 50th edition—we catch up with Sally Gillborn MBE and the team to see just how far they’ve come. And what a journey it’s been!

North Notts BID launched in 2017 as the UK’s first ever area-wide Business Improvement District. What inspired you to take on that challenge?

During my time as North Notts Place Manager, I started to look at the BID model. The place shaping work was established, businesses were engaging and, through the work of the Place Board and North Notts Envoys we were starting to make a difference in the area. But to really take things to the next level we needed to do more.

I remember feeling passionately about the potential that Bassetlaw had, and the appetite from local businesses for meaningful change. We were greatly inspired by the energy of our businesses and the chance to try something different – to create an area-wide BID rather than one single town centre.

We felt that by covering the whole district of Bassetlaw, we could bring together the diversity of rural, industrial, towncentre and hospitality businesses in one unified body that can collectively do more.

What were some of the biggest challenges you and the team faced in those first few years, and how did you overcome them?

Creating a BID of this scale has certainly been interesting.

Setting up a brand-new organisation, finding office space, recruiting staff whilst trying to hit the ground running by introducing the right projects and services to support BID members representing a variety of sectors and locations in Bassetlaw was a challenge for myself and the BID Board.

Another one of the biggest challenges we faced has been simply the size and geography of an area covering 246sq miles, the UK's largest BID by area. We need to ensure that our projects, services and BID member benefits have something that can be accessed by all types of business, including those in the town centres, industrial estates or rural areas.

Over the years, the BID has introduced so many fantastic initiatives — Which projects or events have made you most proud?

Our flagship events such as North Notts Food Fest and Party in the Square have been hugely rewarding. The events are a brilliant way to bring the local community together while also attracting more visitors - all of which helps to showcase our area, increase footfall and spend locally whilst enjoying a fun, family day out. This in turn helps to boost our local economy, which is a huge priority for us as a business improvement district.

Our business-crime reduction work is also something I’m very proud of. Examples of projects delivered across the district as part of the Business Crime Reduction Partnership include: • The installation of CCTV with ANPR and SmartWater asset marking solution in our industrial area.

• Launching the digital radio scheme and DISC crime reporting app in our towns.

We have also installed over 30 life-saving defibrillators on our industrial estates. With such a high volume of traffic and employees on these estates, they have already proven their worth by saving lives.

However, the stand-out project for me has to be the WalkSafe app, which helps people to plan their route safely, identify safe spaces and the location of the BIDs Night Angels in real-time as well as alerting friends/family members if they are not home by a certain time.

Originally set up to protect women on a night out, we saw a huge opportunity to broaden this out. We ran campaigns with local schools and North Notts College to encourage students aged 13 plus to use the app morning, noon and night, and we have seen an incredible uptake. In fact, WalkSafe has been downloaded more times in North Notts than Manchester, which speaks volumes about the benefits in keeping our families safe and secure.

You received an MBE in 2023 for your services to business and the community — huge congratulations.

How did that recognition feel, and what does it represent for you and the North Notts BID team?

Thank you. I was truly humbled and surprised. When I first saw the email, I thought it might be a scam! For me personally, it is such an honour to be recognised in this way, but I view it very much as recognition of the collective effort of the BID team, our board, our members, and the wider business community in North Notts. What it represents is a validation of our approach - that supporting businesses and community and place enhancement can work hand in hand. It shines a light on the value of a strong business-led BID in a district like ours.

The BID’s work seems to go beyond business support — it’s also about local pride and community spirit. How important has that been to your vision for North Nottinghamshire?

That has always been central to me. The BID is not just about business metrics but also about place-making, community, identity, pride and a sense that North Nottinghamshire is open for business, open for opportunity, and a place people want to live, work and visit.

With just under 1,400 business premises now part of the BID, how do you make sure all those different voices are heard and supported?

We’re very conscious of the diversity of our BID members and the fact that different sectors and localities have different priorities.

To ensure voices are heard and supported, we connect with our businesses in various ways: • Our business liaison officers regularly engage with BID members in person, by phone or email to understand their needs and feedback.

• Our board is business-led, with representation across sectors and geographies, which helps ensure governance is closely aligned with the businesses we serve.

• Our BID member benefits offer something for all, whether a manufacturer, a high-street retail business or rural enterprise, there are relevant support packages available, including help with maintenance, training, crime reduction, events and marketing support.

• We commit to clear communication: regular newsletters, networking meetings, BID member spotlights and listening to feedback so we know what’s working, what isn’t, and can adapt accordingly.

• Finally, we emphasise flexibility: we know that one size does not fit all, especially across a large and diverse geography such as ours, so we tailor where needed and welcome innovation or member-led ideas.

By running our flagship events, maintaining the local area and forging effective partnerships. that reach into community and culture such as our eco-friendly art trails, we aim to build a positive narrative for the district. In my view, business success and community success go hand in hand. When people feel proud of where they are, they are more likely to invest locally, spend locally, tell others and support each other, which in turn supports business. So, community spirit, local identity and “place” dynamics are absolutely core to our vision.

You’ve built strong partnerships across so many sectors — from education and local authorities to organisations like STEP Fusion.

How do collaborations like these help strengthen opportunities for local people and businesses?

Collaboration is at the heart of how we operate as a BID. While we may be the UK’s largest singular BID we actually operate with a very lean team, meaning that we can spend more on our projects, events and activities. This also means that effective partnerships are key.

A great example is the collaboration between the BID, Bassetlaw District Council and the UK Atomic Energy Authority in the delivery of the World’s first STEP Fusion Energy cafe situated at the Skills Hub in Worksop. This community café offers invaluable training opportunities while informing customers, visitors and events delegates of the amazing opportunities that will come on stream with the exciting developments with the STEP Fusion Power Plant at the former West Burton Energy site.

The BID also partnered with Bassetlaw District Council to form the Bassetlaw Business Alliance, bringing together our local businesses to keep abreast of the opportunities that are available within the district, attract new investment opportunities and to have a powerful voice for Bassetlaw with the likes of the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA).

I am keen to build on the strong relationships forged with EMCCA and other key partners to ensure that businesses within Bassetlaw have a say in future plans and a ‘bite of the cherry’ with any forthcoming funds and opportunities. We are, after all, a beast of a district - just under a third of the size of the whole of Nottinghamshire, so are a force to be reckoned with.

In short, collaboration amplifies what we can achieve. It enables us to deliver projects at scale, secure additional funding, increase visibility and deliver long-term benefit for our BID members.

We have some amazing opportunities with the East Midlands Investment zone on the Laing O’Rourke site, and we have a very bright future as far as clean energy is concerned through our three former power stations - the STEP fusion plant at the West Burton, the hydrogen plant at High Marnham and the recently announced data centre for AI at Cottam. We need to ensure that as many of our businesses as possible capitalise on these developments by providing procurement opportunities for local providers and career opportunities for local people.

And finally, as you look ahead to the next few years, what excites you most about the future of North Notts BID and the district as a whole? Are there any upcoming projects or goals you’re particularly passionate about?

Looking ahead, what excites me most is the opportunity for us to build on the strong foundations we’ve laid and to really step into a new phase of growth and recognition for the District.

Eight years after the BID launched, the BID is now recognised in the region as a strong voice for Bassetlaw. As well as being a lead partner for the Bassetlaw Business Alliance, we have a seat at the table on the Worksop Together Town Board and the Retford Town Board, giving us an opportunity to support with the design and delivery of new projects and initiatives delivered through Pride in Place funding.

ack in 2017, Jon and Michelle Rogers decided Nottinghamshire deserved a magazine that truly celebrated all the brilliant things happening right on its doorstep — so, naturally, they launched Made Lifestyle in November/December… diving straight into the deep end, as all good adventures do. When you’ve got an idea you believe in, you don’t wait for a quiet moment — you dive right in.

Jon and Michelle set out to create a high-end, luxury magazine that truly reflected the region — both in its look and its feel. They wanted something lasting, a publication people would naturally reach for and enjoy. A beautifully crafted magazine designed to showcase the beauty of the area and the character that makes it special.

From the beginning, our aim was simple: to shine a light on Nottinghamshire — to celebrate the people, businesses, landscapes, and stories that make this county truly special.

We’ve loved the journey from that very first edition to this milestone 50th issue, and looking back, we’re immensely proud of the years that have shaped the magazine and the wonderful people we’ve met along the way.

Fifty issues is more than just a number; it represents a journey, a community, and a shared pride in Nottinghamshire. When we began Made in Notts, we wanted to shout about everything happening right on our doorstep. Over the years, we’ve been privileged to meet farmers, artisans, creatives, business owners, and families across the city of Nottingham and the many towns and villages beyond. Telling their stories — stories of passion, dedication and talent — has been the heart of our work.

From the outset, we wanted every issue to be driven by real people and real stories — supported by photographs that captured their spirit. Every edition has been a labour of love: Jon’s photography bringing each feature to life, while together we pour our hearts into crafting pages that reflect the character, creativity, and resilience of our county. From peaceful woodland trails to bustling market towns, from cosy cafés to flourishing new businesses, we’ve been fortunate to document the moments and milestones that define Nottinghamshire.

One highlight before Covid was our fantastic Food and Drink Awards night, celebrating the very best in the region. It reminded us how much talent Nottinghamshire holds — and how exciting

it is to bring people together. As we look ahead, we’re already planning new events and showcases that we hope will inspire, connect, and add a little extra sparkle to the region.

We’re also grateful for our regular contributors, whose voices have shaped so many issues. Sally Outram has led readers through scenic walks, historic villages, and nature reserves; Teresa Bovey has shared seasonal recipes inspired by local produce; and Dene Wood has shown us how gardens can become living works of art. Writers such as Erin McDaid from Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust have brought nature, conservation, and local heritage to life. From environmental champions to small independent businesses, every person we’ve met has reminded us exactly why we started this magazine — to shine a light on the talent, ideas, and stories that make Nottinghamshire remarkable.

Across Nottingham city, and towns including Retford, Worksop, Newark, Mansfield, Southwell, Bawtry, and many more, we’ve watched communities evolve, new ventures flourish, and local events bring people together. We’ve celebrated weddings, family milestones, and everyday triumphs, always aiming to give each story the space and attention it deserves. The support from readers, advertisers, creatives, and neighbours has been overwhelming — and it’s that warmth which motivates us to keep going.

Reaching fifty issues is a milestone, but for us, it’s also a beginning. Each edition reflects our dedication to celebrating Nottinghamshire — its people, places, and heritage. Made recently visited Light Post Farm and was delighted by the experience.

The trail, completely redesigned for 2025, was filled with enchanting displays, from the sparkling disco duck pond and colourful rainbow racetrack to the impressive 60-metre triangular tunnel.

Families could meet rare-breed lambs, miniature donkeys, and reindeer, while little ones enjoyed the new Farmville indoor play area. Dog-friendly evenings were a lovely addition, allowing fourlegged friends to join in. With 250,000 twinkling lights, festive treats, and cosy tea rooms, Light Post Farm provided a truly magical outing that was enjoyable for visitors of all ages.

Nottingham City Transport (NCT) is celebrating a remarkable double triumph at the UK Bus Awards 2025, with Zohra Rani recognised as Top National Bus Driver and Engineering Shift Supervisor Daniel Sanderson honoured with the Silver Award in the Unsung Hero category.

Zohra, who joined NCT in 2018, is the company’s fifth driver to receive the national accolade, following in the footsteps of previous winners.

Clumber Park

Where The Mansion Once Stood

Rediscovering the stories behind an extraordinary lost mansion.

isitors to Clumber Park may be forgiven for wondering where the house is. Most National Trust country estates have a home at their heart, but of the mansions that once stood here, little now remains.

Clumber Park was once the country estate of the Dukes of Newcastle. Although Clumber House was taken down in 1938, there are many glimpses of its grand past to explore, including the Duke’s Study (the last remaining room of the house), the Laundry Yard, Turning Yard, the Lincoln Stables, the Chapel of St Mary the Virgin and the walled kitchen garden.

How Clumber Park began The story of Clumber Park begins in 1709 when John Holles, the 3rd Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, was granted a licence to enclose 3,000 acres of Sherwood Forest and turn it into a deer park for Queen Anne. When he died, his nephew,

Thomas Pelham-Holles, the 4th Duke, took on the estate. He died childless but had thankfully made himself the 1st Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne, a new title which could be handed down to his sister’s son. This meant Henry Fiennes PelhamClinton became the 2nd Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne in 1768, promptly inheriting Clumber Park.

Clumber House The 2nd Duke was the first to make Clumber Park a home, turning it into an estate dedicated to pleasure on a grand, almost unimaginable scale. He had a mansion built in the early 1760s, designed by Stephen Wright, which was regarded as one of the finest non-Royal houses in the country. A classical building of white freestone (brought from the Duke's own quarry), flanked by a square wing at each corner, with the central portion, which faced the lake, containing a light Ionic colonnade.

The core of the house was the original ducal hunting lodge which had previously existed on the site. This meant that rooms in the centre of the house were not particularly grand, however, those in the new flanking wings more than compensated. The State Dining Room was 60ft long and 34ft wide and designed to accommodate 150 guests seated at one table. The 4th Duke was a renowned collector and filled Clumber House with many paintings by Gainsborough, Van Dyke, Poussin and Rembrandt to name a few. There were also various treasures, including busts, statues, china and an extensive collection of rare books including a Book of Hours, a first folio Shakespeare, and three Caxtons.

The gardens and parkland of the estate were particularly impressive, both in scale and the care and money that had been lavished upon them. Writing in 1896, Cornelius Brown stated that "The lawns and terraces are laid out with much skill and tastefully adorned with lofty vases and graceful statuary" and Leonard Jacks, in 1881, described the lawns as "...very fine, smooth, velvety".

The double avenue of lime trees, created for the 5th Duke, was planted with 1,296 trees and stood at three miles long. Today, it still is the longest in Europe.

The lake, added by the 2nd Duke, took 15 years to create by damming the River Poulter and excavating the riverbed. It was further enlarged and extended in 1817 and 1885 until it covered 87 acres and was almost two miles long.

Fire devastation and demolition The fire on 28 March 1879 was devastating. Not only for the extensive damage to the house, gutting 20 of the 105 rooms, but also the loss of fine artworks, although many were rescued. The fire destroyed the central core of the house, leaving the wings standing round a hollow shell.

The trustees of the 7th Duke, who was just 15 years old and had inherited Clumber only a few months before, were faced with the quandary as to whether to rebuild. The 6th Duke had been an extravagant spender who had significantly reduced the family fortune. However, as Leonard Jacks stated, the Dukes of Newcastle's rent roll was vast and although they could not replace the artworks, they could rebuild the house.

Charles Barry, whose father was the famous Sir Charles responsible for the Palace of Westminster, was put in charge of the work. He replaced the lost rooms in the centre of the house with an enormous entrance hall, which featured balustraded galleries, tessellated pavements and various niches for the surviving statuary.

The demolition

Another fire in April 1912 ravaged the upper two floors, and whilst not as serious as the previous fire, added to the burden. When the decision to demolish the house, taken by the 9th Duke who had inherited it, was announced in the local paper, it stated that ‘the decision to completely demolish the mansion has been taken with great reluctance by the present owner, but it has been necessitated by heavy taxation’. Though it played a part, a more significant factor was that Clumber House had been built for a different age, an age of huge, lavish house parties and vast wealth. With the passing of the former and major pressures on the latter, houses on this scale were just no longer sustainable.

The demolition of Clumber House was contracted out to Henry Boot Construction in 1938, with the sale of most of the contents the year before. Thornbridge in Derbyshire, Henry Charles Boot’s home since 1929, was one estate to benefit from much of the statuary and facades from Clumber, along with Newstead Abbey, home to Lord Byron, whose Clumber Lodge is built entirely from materials from Clumber House.

Savoy Cinema 90 years!

Savoy Cinema, a beloved Nottingham landmark has just celebrated its 90th anniversary! Since its opening on 7th November 1935, Savoy has consistently delivered unforgettable movie experiences, blending its vintage charm and history with modern comforts.

Originally established as the Lenton Picture House Company, Savoy Cinema stands as the only surviving pre-Second World War cinema in Nottingham. Its distinctive appearance, built in the art-deco style with a curved front makes it an easily recognisable spot in the city. The cinema first opened with a screening of Flirtation Walk, starring Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler, and quickly became a local favourite, praised by the Nottingham Guardian for its appealing design. Until the 1960s the cinema offered a twice-weekly program, and locals could enjoy a film for just one shilling per ticket.

Throughout the decades, Savoy Cinema has adapted to technological advancements and evolving audience preferences. In 1955, screen one underwent renovations to accommodate a new, wider screen, replacing the original Cinemascope format. Then, in 1969, the front stage was modified once more, moving the screen further forward to make room for an even larger display.

In 1999, Dolby Digital was introduced, along with another modification to Screen one to create additional space for an even wider screen.

The cinema's commitment to adaptation and innovation has persisted throughout the years, reflected through various refurbishments and technological enhancements. Notable upgrades include the addition of a fourth screen in 1997 and the transition to digital projectors in 2012, which greatly improved the visual experience. Most recently, in 2024, Savoy Cinema completed renovations for screens two, three, and four. Now featuring luxurious faux leather rocker seats, fully electric recliners, and larger cinema screens, ensuring that guests enjoy a state-of-the-art movie-watching experience.

The Savoy added a licensed bar in 1969, making it one of the early cinemas to have a bar. In 1972, it became one of the first independent UK cinemas to split its large single auditorium into three screens.

The Cinema was used for filming scenes for the 1960 film Saturday Night and Sunday Morning. The interior shots of the cinema were featured, and its iconic staircase is still a recognisable part of the building today.

Picasso & Cubism “Art is a lie by which we understand the truth” 4 Feb

Speaker: Douglas Skaggs Picasso is one of the most famous and controversial figures of the 20th century.

Even today, his work triggers mixed and often violent reactions from art lovers.

This lecture aims to calm those fears. It follows his early career from his childhood in Spain, where his unique talent was first recognised, to the garrets and backstreets of Paris, where the poetic and wistful images of the blue period were transformed into the daring experiments with form and structure that became known as Cubism.

The lecture will follow the AGM. This meeting will therefore start at 10.30 am with the lecture following around 11 am.

est Bridgford Operatic Society celebrate their 80th musical production by returning to The Squire Performing Arts Theatre from 17-21 February 2026 with the beloved musical Kiss Me, Kate. Rehearsals are well under way and the cast and creative team are very excited to be performing another ‘show within a show’ following on from their successful 2025 show ‘Curtains’.

This time they have chosen the classic musical they performed previously in 2007 at the Nottingham Arts Theatre. Revived in 2024 at The Barbican, London starring Adrian Dunbar and Stephanie J. Block, this local amateur production brings the wit and brilliance of one of Broadway’s most celebrated shows to life once again. Be prepared to be charmed by its unforgettable blend of romance, comedy, and the classic musical genius of Cole Porter.

Based on the Broadway hit by Sam and Bella Spewack, and featuring Porter’s iconic score, Kiss Me, Kate is a playful adaptation of William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. The story follows the tumultuous relationship between actress Lilli Vanessi and her ex-husband, Fred Graham, who are starring together in a musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s play. Already on poor terms, the two leads skirmish from the start. Their relationship eventually breaks into an all-out emotional war mid-performance that threatens

the production's success. The only thing keeping the show together are threats from a pair of gangsters who have come to collect a gambling debt. Hailed as the ultimate Broadway musical from the golden age Kiss Me, Kate is a simple love story...about two people who just can't stand each other. Guess who wins...

Amidst hilarious backstage antics, love triangles, and mistaken identities, Kiss Me, Kate explores the complexities of love and show business with humour, heart, and plenty of catchy tunes. An exhibition of paintings by Mark Bloomer.

Mark Bloomer is a plein air landscape painter and wildlife artist based in Retford, Nottinghamshire. He is a member of both the Retford Art Society and the Doncaster Art Club. Mark spends his time these days primarily painting outdoors, capturing local scenes from everyday life. His medium of choice is oil and he enjoys experimenting with new techniques and methods of working.

His highlight so far has been as a wildcard participant in the 2026 Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year, in Keswick.

Midwinter Magic Meets Nature’s Wonders Midwinter celebrations offer an ideal opportunity to mark the magic of nature and to look beyond the dark and cold to brighter days ahead.

W

hilst what many of us refer to as the ‘festive season’ is heavily focussed on the Christian celebration of Christmas, the tradition of celebrations centred on the winter solstice – the shortest day of the year - stretch back over millennia.

After months coping with cold, dark days of winter, the opportunity for major celebration amongst family and friends can lift our spirits as we welcome the prospect of longer, lighter days ahead. Alongside marking the planetary cycle that delivers the seasonal shift between shorter and longer day lengths, many cultures have long traditions of honouring nature at this time of year. So, whilst winter might make you want to hibernate, it’s worth bearing in mind that most of the natural world is still active, with many creatures busier than ever as they seek out food and shelter to keep the cold at bay, and that nature is just as amazing and inspiring as at any other time of year.

Given that our traditional midwinter celebrations are inextricably linked to nature, whether in terms of celebrating the gift of life or hopes for future crops and harvests, the

festive season is an ideal time to take stock of the natural world around us. It could also serve as a prompt to discover a little more about some of the species closely associated with Christmas – from robins and partridges (which, by the way, you’re unlikely to find in pear trees!) to mysterious mistletoe. For many of us, though not all, the festive season also provides precious time to get out and about in the countryside or to spend more time in our gardens connecting with nature.

Here at Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, we are already gearing up for 12 Days Wild, our festive nature challenge, where we encourage everyone to do one wild thing a day from 25th December to 5th January - traditionally referred to as the '12 Days of Christmas'. We’re suggesting you swap screen time for wild time and connect with nature for 12 days straight.

12 Days Wild is a great motivation to get outside and enjoy nature during the Christmas break or even to give some thought to sustainable lifestyle choices. Connecting with nature can also help tackle feelings of isolation over the break, helping people to connect across our digital platforms over a common activity.

Participation in our festive challenge has grown massively since it was launched back in 2018 when just a few hundred folks took part. Now, thousands join in each year – so why not join them?

With so much winter wildlife waiting to be explored there really is no excuse. Your wild acts could be little things to help nature – such as recycling your Christmas tree or feeding the birds in your garden – a great way to use up excess festive food - or new ways to connect to the natural world, like trying stargazing on a crisp clear frosty night.

To help you make the most of the challenge we’ve created a host of resources and will provide ideas and support along the way. Sign up is free and a great way to freshen up your festive fun. You could take a walk with family or friends to burn off some Christmas calories, or you could make environmentally friendly Christmas decorations from festive wrapping and packaging ready for next year to reduce waste and save money. As it’s the season of goodwill you could even consider leaving presents for nature!

Over the 12 days there will be time to visit a nature reserve or local park when the weather is fine – offering an opportunity to crunch through the leaves on a frosty morning or listen out for birds and other sounds of nature. When the weather is not so kind you can curl up with a nature book or mull over some eco New Year’s resolutions to set yourself up for a wild and sustainable 2026.

ottingham’s own Mark and Roxanne Hoyle — better known as @LadBaby and @LadBabyMum — have had quite the journey. From sharing light-hearted parenting hacks online to topping the Christmas charts five times in a row, raising millions for charity, and making their TV presenting debut at the Pride of Britain Awards as the official Access All Areas presenters (aired on ITV on 24th October 2025) — this powerhouse pair have proved they’re more than just social media stars.

With their bestselling children’s books — including the much-loved Greg the Sausage Roll series — their infectious humour, which fans have even compared to Ant & Dec, and now the launch of their brand-new range of sauces, Mark and Rox have become the nation’s favourite double act — all while staying proudly grounded in their Nottingham roots. We caught up with them to chat about fame, family, giving back, and what it’s really like to go from sausage rolls to national sweethearts…

From creating fun videos in your kitchen to presenting on the Pride of Britain red carpet — did you ever imagine you’d be swapping sausage rolls for a live TV mic?

Honestly, we still laugh about it. We started out filming videos in our kitchen, usually involving sausage rolls or me (Mark) getting pranked by Rox… and suddenly we’re standing on the Pride of Britain red carpet with golden microphones. It was surreal, but such an honour.

To have our first presenting job be something as meaningful as celebrating real-life heroes felt really special. We were nervous, excited, proud… and just trying not to trip over each other. It was an absolute privilege.

You’ve been praised for your natural on-screen chemistry, with some viewers even comparing you to Ant & Dec. How does it feel to be seen as Britain’s next great double act?

Being compared to Ant & Dec is wild! We’re just two normal people who like to take the mick out of each other and hopefully make a few people laugh.

We think that’s why people connect with us: we’re the same on camera as we are at home. I (Mark) grew up in Nottingham, and it definitely shaped me into who I am today.

People here keep you humble… and they’ll tell you straight if you’re getting too big for your boots!

You’ve raised millions for The Trussell Trust, helping families across the UK. What first inspired you to get involved with food banks, and what’s been the most memorable or moving moment from your fundraising journey so far?

Becoming parents was a huge turning point for us. We know how tough those early years are, so the thought of families struggling to afford food really hit us.

There’s such a big heart behind your humour. How do you balance making people laugh with raising awareness for serious issues like food poverty?

Humour has always been our way of connecting with people, and the heart comes from the love of what we do and the love we have for each other. That’s why it works.

We started small, then realised how enormous the need was.

The Trussell Trust showed us the reality: parents skipping meals so their kids could eat, people choosing between food and electricity… things no one in the UK should face.

We use laughter to bring people in, then we try to shine a light on issues we care about. Being parents changed everything too: the stakes feel higher. It’s about trying to leave the world a bit kinder for our boys and for other families like ours.

Our most memorable moments? It’s always the people. Meeting families who told us the support helped them get through their hardest days — that’s something we’ll never forget.

How do the kids feel about having parents who’ve topped the charts and written bestselling children’s books?

The kids are used to their crazy mum and dad. They’re normally impressed for about ten seconds and then ask what’s for dinner.

We’ve recently launched our family food sauces, Dinner’s Ready. It includes a range of five sauces inspired by Britain’s favourite family meals, made for dipping, dunking, and dolloping — with a portion of every sale (10p) supporting UK food banks all year round via The Trussell Trust. It launched on 30 Nov 2025 and the site crashed nine minutes after the announcement went out; over 172,000 people clicked the link at once trying to access the site! We’re so grateful to everyone who supported us and wanted to try it.

Greg the Sausage Roll was an idea we’d had for so long!

We wanted to create a fun, happy little sausage-roll hero who goes on adventures. We never imagined he’d end up a bestseller or that families would love him the way they have.

Both of us are also dyslexic, and we know how important it is to help children enjoy books. Seeing kids dress up as Greg for World Book Day still makes us emotional.

Five Christmas number ones, a bestselling book, a TV debut… what’s been your biggest ‘pinch-me’ moment so far?

There’s been so many — the first Christmas number one, seeing our book in a shop window, the Pride of Britain red carpet… but honestly, the biggest pinch-me moments are when people say our work helped them.

Awards and achievements are amazing, but knowing something we’ve done made a difference is the bit that stays with us.

You’ve managed to stay completely relatable despite the fame. What’s life really like behind the camera in the Hoyle household? Who’s the messiest, who’s the boss, and what’s a typical Sunday like?

Chaotic. Happy. Very loud.

Looking back at everything you’ve achieved — the music, the laughter, the giving — what message do you hope people take away from the LadBaby story, and what does the future hold?

Looking back on everything — the music, the books, the laughter, the giving — we hope people take away one message: ordinary people can do extraordinary things.

Rox is definitely the boss. Mark is absolutely the funniest.

We’re just two normal parents who tried to do something good, and somehow it grew into this — and we love it!

And our Sundays? Usually watching football with the kids, trying to get the school uniforms washed, and helping with homework. We wouldn’t have it any other way.

As for what’s next… we’ve got some amazing projects coming up that we hope will create a lasting legacy and help even more families. We’re excited for the next chapter.

You’ve shared so much of your journey online — what’s one behind-the-scenes moment you’ve never posted that still makes you both laugh?

There are so many! One that still makes us laugh is when we tried to film a serious, emotional moment… and one of the kids walked in wearing pants and a superhero cape shouting, “ICE CREAMMMM!” It brought us crashing back to reality.

Collage, Connection & The Golden Thread Made chats with collage artist Vanessa Stone following the recent success of her “Where We Sip” exhibition and discovers the quiet creative poetry of her life.

I

n a sunlit log cabin studio nestled in her garden, Vanessa Stone cuts paper with quiet precision and creative joy in her soul. The space, named Sunnyside after her grandfather’s home, is filled with light and silence—except for the occasional podcast murmuring in the background. It’s here, surrounded by nature and memory, that Vanessa creates her distinctive collages: layered landscapes and interiors that speak softly but powerfully of grief, joy, and the spaces we shape.

“I believe in picking up a golden thread and seeing how long it is and where it takes you,” she says. And for Vanessa, that thread has wound through carpet design, ecclesiastical embroidery, poetry, and finally, paper cutting.

Paper for Vanessa offered something else, too: freedom. “I’ve always lived in small spaces. With paper, I could make loads of pieces without worrying about storage. And it’s forgiving.

If it goes wrong, it goes in the recycling. True art is permission to work with something in a way that you do not feel any barriers and with paper there is a lovely sense of ease”.

That ethos, we discover, of gentle, practical, and deeply personal, runs through everything she does in a true landscape of her heart.

We discover Vanessa’s landscape collection is brimming with pieces that are not just depictions of place. They are emotional crystallisations, intuitive reflections of her spiritual connection to nature, taking her back to her childhood roots in the countryside, and the long time she spent often alone, following the loss of her mother at an early age and her older sisters leaving home. “The landscapes are pure,” she says. “They reflect my heart. It’s always an interplay between my head and my heart, you see. The countryside gave me companionship, a sense of home and a way of escapism.”

Vanessa’s journey into paper cutting has by far been linear. After graduating in carpet design, she was commissioned by a Soho gallery in the early 1990s to create rugs, at a time when they were fashionable centrepieces. “I loved them,” she recalls. “I designed rugs for walls, which led to banners and then ecclesiastical embroidery. But working with the rich cloth, often gold, just didn’t align with my principles in this world where it felt too expensive a material to use”.

It was around this time that artists like Rob Ryan and Beatrice Coron were emerging as paper cutters. Vanessa, already using stencils in her work, and yearning to move away, gradually had an idea. “It just dawned on me; why not cut out the textile stage altogether, make things simpler and explore where this takes me? Just stick to cutting stencils and making paper cuts”.

Vanessa always sketches her landscape collection in plein air, soaking in each moment as it takes her, often walking through the countryside with her pencils and pad. She then returns to the solace of her peaceful studio, where she keeps a box of painted papers she prepared earlier, ready to use once she has studied her sketches and reflected on how she will depict the beautiful colours and shapes she has seen. “It’s my deep time,” she explains.

“My connection to the natural world and so I approach each piece in a way that encourages people to be quiet and listen to their heart and the landscape.”

Her own signature quote on her website: “the quiet poetry of the landscape and spaces we shape through collage and drawing” is more than a commanding header. It’s Vanessa’s philosophy. “We’ve become disconnected from nature,” she says. “The collages are about stillness. About letting nature flow over us and we can connect to something deeper.”

While the landscapes are clearly emotionally and intuitively driven, Vanessa’s Interiors takes more of a linear form, approached as if they are intellectual puzzles. Vanessa describes them as “the most addictive puzzle I can do.” In contrast to her Landscape collection, these see the artist sketch in situ in a chosen location; a historical house or busy café, perhaps, before returning to the studio to unpick the lines and perspectives and capture the essence of the atmosphere she experienced whilst there. “It’s about my intellectual brain working out where things fit,” she says. “The more I do it, the more my head and hand are in harmony, and I also really enjoy solitude, perhaps as this is what I became used to at an earlier age”, she muses. “In a busy café, you are surrounded by a wonderful environment and the excitement of people around you, but you can still sit alone and just reflect, observe, sketch in your own silence, everything you see around you. I find it both calming and thrilling at the same time.”

Vanessa’s recent and rather intriguing exhibition “Where We Sip” began during a residency at the National Civil War Museum. In contrast to her busy days, she found solace in drawing cafés during her breaks. “I started capturing bits of cafés, then the more I sketched, the more invested I became.”

She then explains how cafes were the catalyst, driving her to also explore how she could approach historic houses. “I contacted Belton House and asked to draw domestic spaces people don’t normally see. This seemed a natural follow on from cafes.”

The project grew organically, culminating excitingly in “Where We Sip”. Vanessa also reused materials throughout.

“Amazon packaging, bought through ebay and from friends and family, to reflect the everyday nature of the spaces.

These companies are also a part of our lives, just like going for coffee, and I loved marrying the used materials with the meaning and the form of something new. It just seemed to make sense.” And sense it did, for the exhibition was not only a huge success but the catalyst for other opportunities where Vanessa hopes to expand the series, celebrating local businesses and the communities they serve. “Supporting local is so meaningful. I want that to transcend into my art and if there is a way of depicting this through a new collection then I will.”

Something we had not touched on so far, but were curious to find out, is the connection with poetry as Vanessa’s collages often include beautifully chosen poetic fragments; a few lines that echo the rhythm and emotion of the image. “Ah yes”, she smiles. “I’ve always written poems. I loved English at school.

I was rebellious, but I stuck at English and art, and poetry is another piece of my creative soul.”

Her relationship with language is synaesthetic, she explains.

“When I hear music, I see colours. With words, I can taste and feel them. I love the interplay of rhythms and sounds and shapes, and this is inevitably an integral part of each piece.”

Interestingly though it took time to give herself permission to include words in her images. It has been a process of reflection and growth. Now, they feel essential. “Words are signposts to our inner emotional lives. We’re flooded with images everywhere. I take great inspiration from Edwardian posters and graphic styles, marrying image and text in a way that feels both nostalgic and fresh, hopefully creating a more profound sense of meaning and enriched experience for the beholder.

The collages are made over several days, with time to reflect and nurture each piece, ensuring a creative fluidity that embodies the meaning and captures a treasured moment.

Vanessa admits she’s also a perfectionist when it comes to the prints themselves, spending hours tidying images in Photoshop before sending them to trusted printers in London and Bedfordshire. Her greeting cards are folded patiently by hand, often with the support of her husband, packed with locally sourced materials. “It’s very much a cottage industry filled with our family love,” she beams.

Vanessa also teaches workshops; not just collage, but drawing and still life also, in cafés, and community spaces, and she is trained in residencies for primary and secondary schools. Her approach is nurturing and non-confrontational. “It’s about encouraging people and praising them to grow in their own style. Everyone’s drawing style is individual, and that should be celebrated, so I give them the tools and confidence they need to be their best artistic selves.”

Vanessa’s artistic roots run deep. She grew up in a village outside Salisbury surrounded by fields and family craftmanship. Her grandfather and father were cobblers; her great grandad, a ladies’ tailor. “My family goes back to the 1500s; all tradespeople. Very embedded. The work I’d like to do with local businesses is a nod to my own roots.”

Vanessa believes firmly in positivity. I think loss has given me a drive to appreciate the life I have. It's so important that we live life in the now and really get to appreciate the nature and landscapes on our doorstep.

We all feel so much better when we get out and see wide open fields and a blue sky. Nottinghamshire has such fantastic places to walk and explore and I really want to celebrate those places through my collage work. There is nothing better than a follow a curving path and find a cosy café or pub around the corner to sit in! I am so looking forward continuing my “Where We Sip” theme by drawings interiors much closer to home.

Looking ahead, Vanessa has exciting projects on the horizon, including a Spotlight gallery exhibition in Newark and an exhibition at the Cath Ray Gallery from the 10th Jan in 2026.

“I admire Cath so much,” she enthuses. “Her hub is fantastic.

I’m so grateful for the collaboration and support.” She also dreams of working with musician Chris Mingells, projecting her collages, especially those with words, alongside his piano compositions. “I’d love to create an immersive experience.

Vanessa’s also exploring mixed media, gently challenging the belief that she couldn’t be a painter. “I’ve always had a battle in my mind about painting. But I’m trying to overcome that. Sometimes scissors can’t capture everything.”

In February, the collection of 700 plus snowdrops is a galanthophiles delight.

There are 300 varieties to be seen in the garden, together with rare winter aconites and other bulbs.

There will be many snowdrop varieties for sale together with other plants. There are acer, camellia Cornus, hellebore varieties, azaleas and magnolias providing colour. Unusual garden ornaments add to the interest. Light refreshments include Bacon Rolls and a good selection of homemade cakes.

Directions: From J26 of the M1 take the A610 towards Notts. R lane at r’bout, take turn off to Horsendale. Follow road to Woodland Dr, then the 2nd right is Highfield Road.

Join the team at Norwood Park for the first buds of Spring.

The garden is set around a beautiful classical house. The West Pavilion leads into the lime avenue where you can enjoy snowdrops and daffodils. Venture further to fishponds and a walled garden. There is a deer park to explore and discover the sinuous path to the temple.

How Two Women Are Mending More Than Just Furniture Meet Ally Booker and Gemma Broad — the duo behind We Are Repairs, a growing movement inspiring people to rethink waste, rediscover craftsmanship, and celebrate the beauty of fixing what we already have.

n a world that urges us to buy, upgrade, and replace at every turn, Ally Booker and Gemma Broad are loudly — and joyfully — pushing back. Through their shared venture, We Are Repairs, these two creative powerhouses are on a mission to change the way we see the things we own.

Ally, founder of Restoration Hut is passionate about design, with an appreciation for mid-century furniture, and a flair for making old pieces feel cherished again. Gem, the force behind Embrace Bespoke Upholstery & Design, swapped a career in professional sports analysis for a hands-on life in the workshop, crafting and restoring furniture that tells personal stories.

Together, they’ve built more than a business — they’re cultivating a community. Their goal? To bring together repairers, makers, and repair-lovers to form one powerful voice that makes “repair, not replace” the obvious choice.

We asked Ally and Gem about their friendship, their inspirations, and the joyful rebellion of fixing what’s broken — one beautiful piece at a time.

five years ago and started chatting about our love of vintage furniture,” Gem recalls. “We started working on customer projects together whenever we could, refurbishing many family heirlooms such as armchairs and stools. We love nothing more than chatting about the amazing repair and restoration projects we get to work on for our customers — that, and our love of dogs!”

Repair, they believe, is about more than furniture — it’s emotional, practical, and profoundly environmental. Ally shares, “One of my favourite projects was for a customer, Sarah, who wanted me to restore her beloved Great Aunt’s Art Deco oak bureau. It had been hidden in her garage for years and needed a lot of TLC. Sarah had such fond memories of sitting at her aunt’s desk as a child and wanted to have it back in her home, being treasured again. Delivering it back to her was a magical moment. Sarah absolutely loved it.”

When asked how the idea for We Are Repairs first came about, Ally laughs.

“Truthfully, it was because we got fed up of listening to each other moan about how much quality furniture ends up in landfill — we had to stop getting frustrated and start doing something about it!” Gem adds, “22 million small furniture items are thrown away every year in the UK and it doesn’t just stop at furniture — it’s all types of homewares. Most of it simply needs a small repair to keep it in use, so we decided to break down the barriers that currently stop people from fixing their items.” Their solution was simple: a one-stop website connecting people with independent repair professionals across the UK. “All you need to do now is visit the site, type the name of the item you want repairing into our search bar, and it will come up with businesses near you who can help,” explains Ally.

It was perhaps inevitable that these two kindred spirits would find one another. “We met at a local Maker’s Market about

Modern furniture is often made from everdecreasing quality materials and built to break. It can’t be recycled due to all the chemicals and plastic inside, so it gets burned or thrown in landfill. It breaks my heart to see beautiful vintage furniture tossed away.”

Community is at the beating heart of their mission. “It’s a community of people who care — both about the items they own and the people and environment they live amongst,” says Ally. Gem continues, “Mass marketing has fuelled a throwaway culture where people are less important than profit — you won’t find that mindset in the repair community!

We Are Repairs is here to bring these independent businesses together, shout about the power and joy of repair, and encourage more people to repair rather than replace.” The ripple effect is clear: supporting local repairers not only protects the environment but also boosts local economies and creates green jobs.

Gem’s unconventional journey from sport to upholstery brings a unique lens to her craft. “Before becoming an upholsterer, I spent ten years as a performance analyst with England Cricket. My job was finding the tiny details that could give us an advantage to help us win games. It taught me the value of tiny percentage changes — every decision matters. That’s a mindset I bring to upholstery and sustainability.” Ally’s path began closer to home. “My first restoration job was my Nanna’s sideboard,” she recalls. “It was challenging, but underneath the murky brown varnish was a beautiful piece of furniture I could transform. That joy of rediscovering beauty in old pieces inspired me to pursue restoration properly — and Restoration Hut was born.”

The movement isn’t just for professionals. “We Are Repairs is for anyone frustrated by paying more for items of diminishing quality. It’s for anyone who cares about their belongings and wants to keep items in use. It’s for all of us that hate waste,” says Ally. Gem adds, “Even if you’ve grown tired of an item and want to get rid of it, check out our donate section to find incredible charities reusing items across the UK. There is no ‘away’ — let’s be more mindful.” Small changes, they argue, can add up. “If every UK household re-used or repaired just two extra items a year, it would generate £1.6 billion for local economies. Imagine that money in the pockets of local people rather than foreign billionaires!”

Though, honestly, working on furniture also makes me feel present and calm — I enjoy that too.” Gem’s ideal day? “Starting with a long walk with my little Westie George, rain or shine. Then probably a pub roast with the family, followed by an afternoon of sport on the TV. Restful and restorative, ready to get back to the workshop — I don’t like being away for too long!”

Their vision extends far beyond a single website. “We’d love people to discover the pure joy of repair — taking items to local businesses or learning skills themselves,” says Ally.

Gem adds, “We want repair to be accessible to everyone and show that repair businesses are a viable career path. Heritage skills like horology and chair caning must be preserved before knowledge dies out with the older generations.” They dream of hubs on every high street, places to repair, renew, and purchase refurbished furniture — a tangible reminder that repair can be a joyful, practical, and sustainable choice. “As far as we’re concerned, the We Are Repairs website is just the beginning”.

When asked what they hope their restored pieces might say, Ally smiles. “Ha ha, good question. Cheesy I know, but I’d like it to say, ‘This person saw the beauty in me and helped me to shine again.’” Gem, ever the storyteller, adds, “I’m pretty sure every item of furniture we’ve saved so far will start off with a big ‘Thank you’, then fill me in on all the stories it’s seen. I often wish chairs could talk to tell me about the family moments they’ve witnessed over the years.”

New Beginnings On Ancient Paths Discover Farnsfield’s rich heritage and winter landscapes as the year unfolds, by travel writer and photojournalist Sally Outram.

A

s the calendar turns and a fresh year begins, there is no better way to welcome it than with a gentle stride through the rolling countryside of Farnsfield. Nestled on the edge of Sherwood Forest, this charming Nottinghamshire village offers a walk, rich in heritage, nature, and seasonal beauty. Whether you are seeking quiet reflection, or a chance to stretch your legs after festive indulgence, Farnsfield’s paths provide the perfect backdrop for a hopeful start to the year.

The earliest known reference to Farnsfield dates to 956 AD, when King Edwy of Northumbria granted the Archbishop of York, Oscytel, the manor of Southwell. This grant included the farmstead of Farnsfield, then a small community of agricultural dwellings carved out of the woodland margins of Sherwood Forest. For centuries, the village remained a modest farming settlement, its people eking out a living from the land while facing the constant challenges of poor soil, harsh weather, and disease.

By the 16th century, Farnsfield had come under the responsibility of Southwell Minster, overseen by Cardinal Wolsey. Agriculture remained the backbone of life, but by the 1600s, more specialised trades began to appear, including bakers, tailors, and shoemakers. This diversification marked the slow evolution of Farnsfield from a purely agricultural community into a more complex village economy.

Religion played a significant role in shaping Farnsfield’s identity. Around 1646, George Fox, the founder of the Quakers, is believed to have visited the village, establishing one of the earliest Quaker societies here. Their first meeting house was located on Quaker Lane. Later, in 1780, John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, preached in Farnsfield at the junction of Blidworth Road, Mansfield Road, and Main Street. This event left a lasting legacy, and by 1799, the first Methodist chapel was built in the village. Alongside the Anglican parish church of St Michael, these institutions reflected the growing diversity of religious life in the community.

The parish church of St Michael is the most prominent historic building in Farnsfield. Its origins lie in the 15th century, though much of the medieval structure was destroyed by fire in the mid-19th century. The church was rebuilt between 1859 and 1860 by the noted Victorian architects Thomas Chambers Hine and Robert Evans, leaving only a fragment of the original tower intact. Inside, St Michael’s preserves a wealth of heritage features. The tower is a medieval survivor, while later benefactors added stained-glass windows, carved screens, and an organ by James Jepson Binns. The bells were rehung in 1890 and again in 1933, with a sixth bell added in 1974. A clock, gifted in 1880 by the family of Rev. Whitelegge, still marks the hours, updated with extra faces to celebrate the millennium. In the churchyard, a Grade II‑listed sundial, and a rare medieval stone font, add to the site’s historic character, complementing the church’s own Grade II listing for its architectural and historic significance. Generations of villagers have invested in the church’s upkeep, from fundraising campaigns in the 1980s to millennium floodlighting and a quilt depicting the village’s history, now displayed inside.

Farnsfield’s population grew slowly over the centuries, but agricultural changes in the 18th and 19th centuries created a class of landless labourer’s dependent on seasonal work.

The Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834 meant that destitute villagers, except the old and sick, were sent to the Southwell workhouse. Despite these hardships, Farnsfield developed a strong sense of community. Brickmaking became a notable local industry, with Brickyard Lane serving as its hub. At a time when Farnsfield was largely agricultural, the brickyard provided steady employment for local labourers who might otherwise have relied on seasonal farm work. The clay soils around the village were well suited to brick production, and the bricks manufactured there were used in cottages, farm buildings, and boundary walls throughout the parish. Although small in scale compared to the larger industrial centres nearby, the brickyard stood out as one of the few trades that gave Farnsfield an industrial character. Its presence is still remembered in the name of Brickyard Lane; a reminder of how even modest enterprises contributed to the fabric of village life.

One of the village’s most remarkable figures was George Yates, the blind postman. For thirty-two years, he walked daily between Farnsfield and Southwell, covering twelve miles to deliver and collect post. His route was so familiar that he could navigate it unaided, relying on memory and determination rather than sight. Upon arriving at the village, he would blow a horn to announce his presence, and the villagers would come to him to collect their mail. The community remembered him for his punctuality and fortitude, qualities that earned him great respect. His dedication was well known, and his obituary in 1866 noted how difficult it would be to replace him.

Farnsfield’s history also bears the scars of global conflict. In 1944, during World War II, an RAF Halifax bomber (MZ519-LKU) crashed on the south side of the village, killing all on board.

A large memorial now marks the site, serving as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the war. It is the perfect spot for quiet reflection, with far reaching views over the Nottinghamshire countryside.

Beyond its history and heritage, Farnsfield’s surrounding countryside reveals a living landscape where wildlife thrives.

Through the seasons, the surrounding landscape supports a wide variety of wildlife. In spring, hedgerows burst into life with blossom, providing food for pollinators and nesting sites for small birds. By summer, the heathland (part of the wider Sherwood Forest) glows with heather and gorse, butterflies and bees are abundant. Autumn brings berries and nuts that sustain thrushes, blackbirds, and squirrels, whilst migrating birds pass through the fields and woodlands. During winter, the countryside surrounding Farnsfield remains lively despite the colder conditions. Ancient oak and birch trees provide shelter for bats and insects that overwinter, while hedgerows of hawthorn and holly offer berries that sustain thrushes, blackbirds, and visiting fieldfares and redwings. Tawny owls are particularly vocal at this time of year as they establish their territories, and woodpeckers can often be heard drumming in preparation for spring. Mammals such as foxes, badgers, and deer continue to forage, frequently leaving visible tracks in the snow or soft ground. These seasonal behaviours highlight how the village’s mix of woodland, farmland, and hedgerows supports wildlife year-round, even during the harsher winter months.

The history of Farnsfield is one of resilience, adaptation, and community spirit. From its medieval origins as a farmstead on the edge of Sherwood Forest to its role in religious movements, agricultural change, and wartime sacrifice, the village has continually evolved while retaining its identity. Today, Farnsfield stands as a thriving community that honours its past while looking toward the future, embodying the enduring character of Nottinghamshire’s rural heritage.

Start Point: Parfitt Drive Car Park – Free parking. NG22 8FA. Dog friendly: Yes, keep dogs on a lead.

Refreshments: The Lion, Main Street, Farnsfield, Le Petit Vert, Main Street, Farnsfield (check opening times).

White Post Pub, Ollerton Road, Farnsfield. There are also further places to eat and drink in the village and close by.

Directions 1. With your back to the main entrance

of Parfitt Car Park, turn left and walk along the pavement on Southwell Road, heading towards the centre of the village. Southwell Road then merges into Main Street. Continue along passing Quaker Lane and Tippings Lane on your left, until you reach the church.

2. Explore the church at this point, if you walk through the grave yard around the back of the church, you will see the old stone font. Go back to the main gate and turn right back along the path onto Main Street.

Proceed until you reach Tippings Lane. You will see the CO-OP on the corner. Turn right into Tippings Lane, passing the car park. Ahead you will see a fingerpost pointing left on the corner of a house.

3. Continue along the narrow pathway which becomes a track, follow this bearing left on to New Mill Lane.

Continue along passing a sports field, to a stile. Cross over the stile and proceed along to another stile.

Cross over the stile and follow the field edge path through the field to a metal gate. Go through the gate.

You will see farm buildings along the track to your right. Continue along until you reach an intersection of paths to your left. Follow the upper path which leads onto a field. Cross over the field, then another, where the track leads diagonally towards some buildings. You will see a gate, go through the opening to the left of the gates, following the track along through a small residential area, then onto the road.

4. At the road, turn right, and after a short distance turn left onto a signposted lane. Proceed along the lane until you reach a footpath to your right, on the bend of the road.

Follow the footpath as it ascends through woodland. You will reach a grassed area, and a gate to the road.

Go through the gate and turn left and continue along the road.

5. After a short distance you will see a signpost to the right, proceed along

the track which runs parallel to a field, to the next field, where you turn right following the field edge track. You will soon see a gap in the hedgerow, go through, and continue up along the path until you reach the top of the slight hill. Once at the top take a moment to admire the far-reaching views, before following the track to the right at the corner of the field.

You will see a gap, go through, and turn left downhill through to a further field, keeping the hedge to your right.

Continue along until you reach a further gap and a bench. Proceed straight ahead to the wooded area and onto a wide track to the sports ground.

6. Continue along until you reach Cotton Mill Lane, turn left passing some residential properties then turn right at the signposted footpath. Follow the narrow path until you reach Main Street. Turn right and retrace your steps back to the car park.

Yet when viewed through the lens of positive psychology, the last decade offers a powerful blueprint for how to navigate and thrive in the uncertain future ahead.

Thai Style Coconut Curry Sauce Ingredients 300mls coconut milk 1 clove crushed garlic ½ tsp grated ginger 1 tsp pureed lemon grass 1 tbsp crunchy peanut butter 2 tsp demerera sugar 1 tsp fresh lime juice 1 small red chilli, finely chopped ½ tsp turmeric 200g cooked king prawns Chopped peanuts for garnish 2 tbsp freshly chopped coriander

Method 1. Place all the ingredients into a pan and boil gently for 2 minutes to thicken, add cooked prawns and simmer gently until heated through.

2. Serve with rice noodles or jasmine rice.

Serves 2

Jasmine Rice Ingredients 2 cups of boiling water 1 cup jasmine rice Piece of lemon grass or 2 kaffir lime leaves

Method 1. Pour the boiling water into a saucepan, add the rice and lemon grass, cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes.

2. Remove the lemon grass before serving.

Thai Green Curry Ingredients 1 tbsp ground nut oil 1 stick celery 4 spring onions 2 tbsp green curry paste 1 cm grated ginger 1 clove garlic, grated 2 chicken breasts 100g green beans 400g tin coconut milk 200mls chicken stock

Method 1. Heat a wok or large saucepan.

2. Add the sliced celery and spring onion and stir in the curry paste.

3. Add the garlic and grated ginger and chicken.

4. Heat through until the chicken is cooked.

5. Add the remaining ingredients and gently simmer for 20 minutes.

6. Serve with boiled or steamed rice.

Deconstructed Exotic Cheesecake Ingredients 6 ginger biscuits, crushed 250g soft cream cheese 150g coconut yoghurt 2 tbsp icing sugar A portion of tropical fruit salad

Method 1. Arrange fruit salad in the base of each serving glass.

2. Combine the soft cream cheese, yoghurt and icing sugar and spoon over the fruit.

3. Sprinkle over the crushed ginger biscuits before serving.

Food & Drink

Tropical Fruit Salad This seasonal fruit salad can be served four ways. Try serving it simply over ice cream or with yoghurt or use as a topping for Cheesecakes or Rice pudding.

Decorate with coconut flakes before serving.

Ingredients 1 mango 3 kiwi A carton of fresh prepared or small can of pineapple chunks 3 ripe passion fruits Zest and juice of 1 lime

Method 1. Finely dice the mango, kiwi and pineapple and place into a bowl.

2. Halve the passion fruit and scoop out the seeds and pulp into the mixed fruit.

3. Add the lime juice and use the zest for decoration as required.

Thai Style Bananas Ingredients 6 bananas, peeled and cut in half lengthways 1 tbsp white sesame seeds 50g unsalted butter 1 tbsp fresh ginger, finely chopped zest of 1 orange 50g caster sugar juice of 1 lime 5 tbsp orange juice

NB - 2 tbsp Brandy or an Orange liqueur may be added to the sauce.

Method 1. Place a large frying pan over a high heat and add the sesame seeds. Stir for about 2 mins until golden brown, tip them out of the pan into a bowl.

2. Put the butter, ginger and orange zest into a pan and once melted add the bananas, cut side down, the sugar and the lime juice and orange juice and sauté for 2 mins, just until the juice starts to caramelise. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve immediately with vanilla ice- cream or coconut ice cream or yoghurt.

Coconut Meringue Roulade With Exotic Fruits Ingredients 5 egg whites 250g caster sugar 2 tsp white wine vinegar 1 tsp cornflour 30g desiccated coconut 2 tbsp coconut flakes Filling 250g Mascarpone cheese 150g coconut yoghurt or double cream 1 tbsp icing sugar Finely diced exotic fruits

Method 1. Preheat your oven to 140ºC Fan. 2. Whisk egg whites until stiff and then gently whisk in the caster sugar 1 tbsp at a time.

3. Fold in the vinegar, cornflour, and desiccated coconut.

4. Line a swiss roll tin with non-stick baking paper and gently spread the meringue mixture in the tin. Sprinkle over the coconut flakes.

5. Bake for 35 - 40 minutes.

6. Turn the meringue out onto a sheet of greaseproof paper.

7. Mix together the mascarpone, yoghurt or double cream and icing sugar and spread over the top of the meringue.

8. Arrange the chopped exotic fruits over the cream and gently roll the roulade up.

Exotic Rice Pudding Ingredients 60g Arborio rice 50g pudding rice 25g butter 600mls milk 2 cardamon pods 2 tbsp condensed milk 150mls double cream

Method 1. Place the Arborio and pudding rice, butter and milk into a large saucepan and bring up to boil.

2. Meanwhile crush the cardamon pods slightly and drop them into the hot milk.

3. Simmer gently for approximately 18-20 minutes stirring two or three times during cooking until thick and creamy.

4. Remove the cardamon pods and stir in the condensed milk and double cream.

5. Transfer into serving bowls and top with the tropical fruit salad before serving.

Maserati: 111th Birthday Ahead Of The Year Of The Trident An occasion that not only honours the Brand’s past but also strengthens its commitment to a future of excellence. The focus is on 2026 with the centenary of the logo and Maserati’s first 100 years in racing.

odena, late 2025 – The spotlight hasn't faded yet on “Maserati Meccanica Lirica” and on the return of GranTurismo and GranCabrio production to the historic Viale Ciro Menotti plant, and Maserati celebrated the 111th anniversary of its founding – a milestone that makes it the longest-standing brand in Italy’s Motor Valley.

These two milestones make Maserati the epitome of Italian luxury on the global stage, guiding the Brand toward the Year of the Trident Centenary – 2026 – marking 100 years of its iconic logo and, at the same time, 100 years since its debut in motorsport. It was precisely in 1926 that the Maserati Tipo 26, the first car ever to bear the Trident on its bonnet, raced in the Targa Florio and won its class.

But the story of this Made-in-Italy icon began a decade earlier, in 1914, when Alfieri Maserati and his brothers Ettore and Ernesto founded “Ditta Alfieri Maserati” at Via de’ Pepoli 1A, right in the centre of Bologna. As stated in the individual business declaration document, the new firm officially began operations on 1 Dec, 1914 (as the document itself was filed with the Municipality of Bologna on 14 Dec). The Maserati brothers were passionate about mechanics and had a love for speed, and they were not averse to getting behind the wheel of a race car themselves.

Another brother, Mario, contributed by designing the Trident logo – inspired by the Fountain of Neptune in the centre of Bologna – and the final brother, Bindo, joined the Officine Maserati in 1932, following Alfieri's death.

As mentioned, the first car to bear the Trident was the Tipo 26 - a racing car that made its debut at the 1926 Targa Florio, where it took first place in the up to 1.5-litre class with Alfieri at the wheel.

It was the first in a long line of achievements, including backto-back victories at the Indianapolis 500 (1939 and 1940), four consecutive Targa Florio wins (1937, 1938, 1939, and 1940), nine Formula 1 wins, and the 1957 Formula 1 World Championship with Juan Manuel Fangio. More recently, Maserati returned to winning with the MC12, which claimed six FIA GT international championships between 2005 and 2010: the highest expression of GT racing for production-derived cars. Since 2023, the Maserati GT2 has brought the Trident back to closed wheel competition, earning victories and becoming eligible to compete in over 20 championships worldwide.

At the end of 1939, with the arrival of the Orsi family, Maserati began its move to Modena, where the Viale Ciro Menotti plant opened on 1 Jan, 1940, and has remained the home of the Trident ever since. In 1947, the collaboration between the Maserati brothers and the Brand came to an end, and the first road car, the A6 1500, was introduced. Then, in 1963, the Brand debuted the Quattroporte, creating the segment of highperformance luxury sedans.

After a brief period under Citroën ownership (1968–1975), during which the company introduced its first modern industrial processes, the subsequent De Tomaso era (1975–1993) saw the creation and commercial success of one of the Brand’s most iconic and best-selling models: the Biturbo.

Motoring

Built on these strong historical and industrial foundations, the more recent phase of the Italian brand’s evolution has been marked by new models and major innovations, starting from 2007. The fifth-generation Quattroporte debuted at the Detroit Auto Show, followed by the iconic GranTurismo at the Geneva Motor Show. The GranCabrio arrived in 2009; the sixthgeneration Quattroporte and the Ghibli in 2013; three years later came the Levante, the first Maserati SUV. In 2020, with the introduction of the production lines for the new Maserati MC20, the flagship of a new era for the Brand, the Viale Ciro Menotti plant underwent a major renewal, complete with an in-house paint shop and an area dedicated to the development and assembly of the revolutionary Maserati Nettuno engine, protected by international patents and 100% made by Maserati.

Two years later came the debut of Grecale, the new SUV that best shows Maserati’s granturismo spirit, blending performance and elegance in an unparalleled driving experience. In 2023, it was the turn of the Maserati GT2 Stradale, a street-legal super sports car that unites two iconic Maserati worlds: elegance and racing. This model embodies the brand's racing soul while simultaneously offering comfort and driving pleasure for daily use. The following year, the spotlight fell on the MCXtrema, a track-only "beast" limited to just 62 units, equipped with an extreme version of the 730 hp V6 Nettuno engine.

Finally, 2025 will be a truly historic year for the Brand and its Modena facility, marked by three moments: the start of production of the MCPURA the purest expression of Maserati energy and performance; the unveiling of BOTTEGAFUORISERIE, a new project uniting both Alfa Romeo and Maserati creative forces; and the homecoming of GranTurismo and GranCabrio, returning to the birthplace of their previous generations.
