here’s something about the first proper warm day in Nottinghamshire — when the pavements radiate heat, the smell of barbecues wafts over garden fences, and someone (every year without fail) declares it’s “too hot to sleep” — that makes summer feel officially underway.

And what a summer we have in store.

The local roundup Exciting Plans For £20m Redevelopment Updated proposals are being shared with residents in Bulwell as part of £20m improvements for the town centre.

Nottingham City Council successfully bid for £19.8m from the previous government’s Levelling Up Fund to revamp the area and boost economic growth.

Bulwell town centre is highly valued in Nottingham because of its longstanding retail offer but it was felt that major infrastructure improvements would enhance this even further. The planned works will complement recent transport infrastructure investment through the Transforming Cities Fund.

This provided £900,000 for the redevelopment of Bulwell bus station in 2023, which included redesigning the layout – installing a new saw-tooth design – and building new passenger waiting platforms.

Nottingham City Transport has also invested £1.8m of private-sector funding into a new electric bus fleet that operates from the facility.

The new project will deliver a range of improvements to make the town centre more attractive, including: • Bulwell Bogs: The muchloved Bulwell Bogs area will be fully refreshed with a new planting and landscape design, including a high-quality play offer to cater for all ages.

It will see renewal and expansion of the splash park and introduction of a refreshments kiosk with toilet and changing facilities to make the park a great place to visit – particularly in summer months.

Lighting and CCTV will also be upgraded.

• Market place: Existing market equipment will be replaced with a flexible mix of stalls, along with better access to electrical power on site, allowing flexibility in attracting both new and existing vendors.

• Bus station public toilets: The existing bus station toilets will be rebuilt and completely modernised.

• Wider public realm refurbishment: Paving will be renewed across the pedestrianised areas of the town centre along with new seating and street trees. Connections will be improved between the Market Place and the Bogs area to bring these separate parts of the town centre together.

The council’s project plan for the Levelling Up improvements included extensive consultation with local communities and representatives.

How Mansfield has become a hotbed of art and creativity.

The second year of Mansfield District Council as a National Portfolio Organisation has seen a long list of achievements in raising the quality and quantity of artistic opportunity in the district.

From expanding the diversity of audiences at the Palace Theatre and staging a series of major outdoor events and exhibitions of national significance, to offering ‘arts on prescription’ activities to vulnerable people, the Arts Council England NPO funding has been making a valuable impact on the quality of life for residents.

Cultural Services are now better aligned with the council’s goals on climate change, with sustainability embedded into the museum’s forward plan. Sustained creative activity in priority neighbourhoods since April 2024 has seen more participants in social prescribing activities. All participants are vulnerable adults, including individuals with learning disabilities, mental health conditions, or long-term health conditions.

Tuxford's Museum On Channel 4!

Tuxford’s Museum of the Horse features in Channel 4’s show ‘Millionaire Hoarders’.

The Museum of the Horse, Tuxford, has recently appeared on the second series of Channel 4’s programme ‘Millionaire Hoarders’ in a quest to fundraise for its future. Sally Mitchell, the Museum’s owner, curator and founder of Sally Mitchell Fine Arts, was approached by the TV production company about a year ago to get involved in the programme which features Antiques Roadshow expert, Ronnie Archer-Morgan.

The programme showed antiques expert, Ronnie rummaging through Sally’s

raise funds for the future of the Museum and help finance the renovation of the Museum’s new conference room.

When Sally revealed a painting by George Stubbs, the renowned 18th century English artist famed for his horse portraits, hidden away in a storeroom for more than 50 years, Ronnie couldn’t believe his eyes!

The painting depicts a grey cob named Rainbow. It is recorded in the catalogue Raisonne and experts at Sotheby’s confirmed that Stubbs produced the artwork in the very early 1800s, 1802-1804 during his twilight years. Sally agreed to sell the painting in Sotheby’s in Bond Street to help

Ronnie Archer-Morgan was extremely moved by the find, commenting: “I've just been handling and talking about a Stubbs. It's been in my hands; it's a wonderful thing - this is why I love my job. Getting the best price for Sally so she can continue her dream. Her dedication to her museum brought me to tears. She's so humble and dismissive of any praise for what she's done, but what she's achieved is monumental.”

Sally commented: “It was a very interesting experience being involved in the programme and hearing what Ronnie’s expert opinion was on items like the Japanese saddle which also featured.

I am absolutely delighted with the auction result of the Stubbs which is a wonderful start to our fundraising efforts to enable the Museum to continue when I fail to do so. I am eighty this year and sadly none of us live forever!

The Museum is the only one of its kind in the UK and the collection is unique. Hopefully the TV programme will help spread the word and encourage more visitors to the Museum and who knows,

Local Choirs Honour Loved Ones And Raise Money To Help Those Dealing With Grief Community choirs across the UK have come together to raise money for charity and provide solace - through song.

The Collaboration Choir – a collective of adult pop choirs – is aiming to raise £20,000 for Cruse Bereavement Support, and to encourage more open conversations about grief.

To help reach their goal, 600 men and women from across The Collaboration Choir collective came together to sing their own arrangement of Faith Hill’s ‘There You’ll Be’.

The singers were recorded and filmed, resulting in a beautiful celebratory tribute to those who have been loved and lost. Singers were invited to bring a photograph of a loved one, and these were captured as drawings on the day by Cambridge

based storyboard artist Seb Antoniou, adding a uniquely moving element to the film.

Collaboration Choir Founder Carrie Rawlings said: “We are a choir built by and for the community, and a huge part of our collaborative journey is working with charities to help them raise muchneeded funds. We want to use music as a catalyst for change and offer each other solace through song. It’s not easy to open up about grief, and Cruse do incredible work supporting those who have experienced loss. I’m incredibly proud of everyone who took part, sang their hearts out, and shared their stories. The video is a fitting

I would like to thank you for tackling grief head-on and helping us to work through our emotions. I really enjoyed being part of this project.”

Choir members have also been holding bake sales and book sales to fundraise in their own time. The total so far stands at £14,358 after

Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance

Leave A Gift To The LNAA & Save Lives Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance is extremely important to agricultural workers in the county.

Solar PV system at Harvey Hadden Sports Village in Bilborough, Nottingham

UK’s Largest Solar-Powered Leisure Centre Harvey Hadden Sports Village on track to become the UK’s largest solar-powered leisure centre, supporting Nottingham’s carbon neutral ambitions.

Harvey Hadden Sports Village, part of Nottingham City Council, in Nottingham is believed to be the UK's largest solar-powered leisure centre, with a total installed solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity of 571.5 kWp, following the completion of its third phase of solar installation. This groundbreaking milestone underscores Nottingham’s leadership in renewable energy and advances the city’s ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality.

This investment of over £449,000 of Salix support is a vital component of Nottingham City Council’s broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions and increase sustainable energy across the city. The recent expansion cements Harvey Hadden Sports Village’s status as a leader in renewable energy within the public sector.

A vision for sustainability: milestones of installation.

The journey to making Har-

vey Hadden Sports Village the UK’s largest solar-powered leisure facility began in 2015 with the installation of a 67.2 kWp solar carport. At the time, it was the biggest solar carport in the UK, covering 40 parking bays and generating approximately 50,772 kWh of clean energy annually. This marked the first major step toward transforming the centre into a solar-powered hub.

In 2018, a 200 kWp roofmounted system was added, significantly increasing the centre’s renewable energy capacity and reducing its dependence on grid electricity. The latest development came this year, with the addition of a 307.58 kWp rooftop solar system and this system comprises 676 bifacial panels (1,365 square metres) and is expected to generate around 257,752 kWh of clean energy annually, saving around 60 tonnes of CO2 each year. Over its 30-year lifespan, this phase alone is

estimated to save over £3.66 million in electricity costs along with approximately £315,907 in gas savings.

With these combined systems, Harvey Hadden Sports Village now generates over 500,000 kWh of solar energy each year—enough to power over 120 average homes.

Community benefit and smart design for maximum efficiency.

Of the total energy produced, 74% is consumed on-site, directly powering the building’s daily operations. Surplus solar power is used to heat the swimming pool, significantly reducing dependence on gas and improving overall energy efficiency. This system eliminates the need for expensive battery storage, offering a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution.

Sustainability at the heart of Nottingham’s vision.

Nottingham has set an ambition to become carbon neutral by 2028, and this

solar expansion provides significant progress to Nottingham’s Carbon Neutral Action Plan, addressing the Council’s commitment to increase generation from renewable sources across its properties. Since 2009, the Council has implemented over 300 energy-saving projects, reducing emissions and saving nearly £4 million in energy costs.

A model for future energy efficiency upgrades.

Harvey Hadden’s transformation into one of the UK’s Largest Solar-Powered Leisure Centre sets a new standard for energy efficiency in publicsector buildings. As Nottingham works toward its goal of carbon neutrality, the success of this project highlights the potential of renewable energy solutions to benefit both the environment and the local community.

Worksop Society Of Artists 1944 – 2025 Last year the Worksop Society of Artists celebrated their 80th anniversary during their annual summer exhibition of new works by members of the Society at Sparken Hill Academy.

The inaugural meeting of the Worksop Society of Artists (WSA) took place at the, then, offices of the Worksop Guardian towards the end of WWII in October 1944. Of those present at the meeting was Druie Bowett, a local, but well known artist who became a leading force in the development, growth and success of the WSA. Initially membership was quite exclusive and somewhat elitist.

Members would have to meet certain standards in their artwork judged by a selection panel before being accepted.

The WSA had connections to Thoresby through the Countess Manvers who became a patron in 1945 and opened one of the society’s first exhibitions in Worksop.

She regularly exhibited her paintings in the Society’s exhibitions. Her daughter, Lady Rozelle, was also a member.

For over 50 years the WSA had problems finding a venue for their monthly meetings, sometimes meeting in members’ homes. It wasn’t until the late 90s that the WSA found a more permanent home at Worksop Cricket Club, ironically at the time the Society lost one of its founder members and staunch supporter, with the death of Druie Bowett in De-

cember 1998. Many of the WSA members throughout the years have gone on to become prestigious, professional and published artists.

Richard Combes, son of Kip Combes, exhibited at the Harley Gallery and in London. Michael Portillo visited his London exhibition where many of his friends had purchased Richard’s paintings which sold for several thousand pounds each. “I have only one question,” Michael said: “So why is your work so cheap?”!

Ruth Templeton, who opened our Summer Exhibition last year, during our 80th Anniversary Celebrations, spoke of her early memories of the Society and of her younger brother, David, who joined the WSA in the 1960’s at the age of 13 years. David became an accomplished and celebrated artist spending his later life in Majorca in a small village Deia, where he continues to enjoy the freedom to pursue his interests in painting and music. One of his finest portraits is of Robert Graves, poet, novelist and soldier, who lived in the Deia most of his life.

The WSA organises an annual Summer Exhibition of members’ artwork at Sparken Hill Academy, Worksop, for which we are very grateful. This year it is open from 2 - 10 Aug. Admission free. Other exhibitions have been held at Clumber Park, Rufford, The Crossing and Retford Museum.

The WSA now hold weekly meetings every Monday, still at Worksop Cricket Club, Central Drive, Worksop in their function room which has pleasant views over the cricket ground and bowling green. We are very grateful to them for allowing us to use this venue. We have a varied programme of events including demonstrations by professional artists, in-house hands-on workshops as well as Saturday all day workshops and outings to interesting places, all of which are op-

tional. We do not offer regular tuition but our members are always willing to give help, encouragement and advice.

Nowadays we are far from being elitist and the Society welcomes artists of all abilities who are interested in joining like-minded people to come along. Our annual membership subscription is £10 this year and £2 when you attend a session. We’re open for members to drop in between 10am - 3pm every Monday (come and go as you wish). Refreshments are provided. Demonstrations by professional artists are from 2pm to 4pm on the third Monday each month.

Everyone is very welcome to join us for a free session to see for yourself and decide whether it’s for you.

The members believe being relaxed and creative in a pleasant atmosphere is a great benefit to personal wellness.

Splendour Festival prides itself on drawing talent from international and national pools, bringing household names to the East Midlands while also supporting and nurturing the emerging artists that keep the local music scene thriving year round. He collaborates with acclaimed storyteller Gav Cross to bring to life his sculptural works for children and families through the legendary character of the ‘Green Man’.

12 Jul – 21 Sep International artists celebrate our love of dogs in summer exhibition at the Harley Gallery.

A Dog’s Life will be on show at the Harley Foundation, Nottinghamshire from 12 Jul until 21 Sep 2025. This free-entry art exhibition is a witty, tail-wagging celebration of our canine companions – exploring how our pets can become muses, collaborators and inspiration for art.

Our love of dogs has long been part of British culture, and today they’re more pupular than ever, with over 12 million dogs living in UK households. A Dog’s Life brings together the work of artists, designers, illustrators and photographers from around the world who all find creative inspiration in man’s best friend.

Perfect for visitors of all ages, the exhibition features over 100 artworks – from life-sized crochet sculptures to children’s book illustrations to traditional oil paintings. Visitors may also recognise artworks by well-known artists including Sophie Ryder, William Wegman and David Shrigley.

Highlights include: • Rafael Mantesso uses photography and illustration to create imaginary scenes of his bull terrier Jimmy Choo.

These images became an overnight Instagram sensation, and nine will be on display in the gallery.

• Gerrard Gethings shows his uncanny side-by-side photographs of dogs and their human look-alikes.

• Sophie Ryder, a renowned British sculptor and Royal Academy graduate, exhibits a dynamic bronze sculpture and a striking portrait of her dog.

• Sophie Gamand’s touching portraits of rescue Pit Bulls wearing handmade flower crowns are part of a project that’s helped rehome hundreds of dogs in the US. • Shauna Richardson, known for her unique technique Crochetdermy®, presents a life-sized crocheted hound.

As well as a wide-ranging display of dog-themed photography, ceramics, textiles, prints and sculpture, there will be lots of opportunities for visitors to get involved: There’s a ‘name the breed’ trail competition and a digital interactive where visitors can see what they’d look like as a dog. There will also be an array of canine-related crafts, including drawing your pooch’s portrait and a ‘make a mask’ activity.

Legends In The Leaves: Robin Hood, Sherwood, And The Forests That Inspire Sherwood Forest NNR, Edwinstowe. NG21 9RN

Robin Hood Festival • 25 Jul - 25 Aug In Sherwood and other ancient European forests, legend, myth, and the power of storytelling can help to inspire respect for nature across generations.

W

hen summer arrives in Sherwood Forest, attention turns to celebrating its world-famous legend. The Robin Hood Festival begins at the end of July and runs over the following weekends until the Bank Holiday at the end of August.

It is a chance to retell the stories that make the figure of Robin Hood immortal. Centuries after his emergence in the public consciousness, his legacy continues to inspire each new generation. Children still immerse themselves in the legend with toy bows and arrows, adorned in Lincoln green tunics and hats with vibrant red feathers.

The notion of the folk hero, a champion of the common people who cocked a snook at the powers that be, is still so relatable in this day and age.

At the Festival, his tales—or modern reinterpretations—can be found in the form of a medieval joust on horseback, a hand-tohand combat display, or the yarns spun by roving storytellers.

Cinema is also a medium that loves the legend. Since its advent as an art form, there have been dozens of films about Robin Hood made in many different languages.

Two of the most popular celluloid depictions of the adventures of Robin Hood, Maid Marian, and the Merry Men will be shown at this year’s Festival. It is now 34 years since Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves was a box-office smash, and more than half

a century since the animated characterisation of the outlaw as a cunning and charismatic fox was created by Disney.

The choice of a fox to portray Robin Hood is rooted in European folklore from medieval times. Reynard the Fox was a character who appears in many tales that parody the social elites of the day.

It is said that Disney originally wanted to make a film about Reynard’s adventures, but they were considered too sinister for younger audiences. However, they retained the figure of the fox and his assorted animal accomplices and adversaries in the more child-friendly exploits of Robin Hood.

Legends can provide a gateway and a means to protect our precious spaces for nature. The appeal of these stories brings visitors to the forest, where they can spend time taking part in a host of activities that evoke the spirit of the Middle Ages—while almost subconsciously absorbing and connecting with nature.

Sherwood is by no means alone in being a forest with a legend.

Across Europe and beyond, there are tales told about enigmatic figures and mysterious happenings. Representatives from the team at Sherwood Forest recently travelled to Brittany and the Broceliande Forest, not far from the city of Rennes.

Broceliande features in the Breton versions of the Arthurian romances, written by the poet Chrétien de Troyes in the

1100s. Today, the forest is home to Le Centre de l’Imaginaire Arthurien, with a visitor centre and exhibition dedicated to the tales of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table.

The forest even has a lake, reputed to be the body of water from which Excalibur was held aloft by Viviane, the Lady of the Lake.

Lake aside, Broceliande could almost be Sherwood Forest, with its ancient oak trees, woodpeckers, and churring nightjar.

And it was within this landscape that the Sherwood Outlaws Medieval Performance team—who will once again be at this year’s Festival—delivered a fusion of the legends of Robin Hood and King Arthur, as the outlaws and the Sheriff of Nottingham feuded over the fabled Sword in the Stone, Excalibur itself.

Also present to watch the show were ambassadors from the forests of Ardennes in northeastern France, where it is said that all manner of mythical beings are to be found, including werewolves and dwarfs.

The forest of Mervent-Vouvant, on the west coast of France, was represented too, travelling from a woodland where the figure of Melusine, who is cursed to partly transform into a fish or even a snake, is celebrated in local folklore and even in ancient architecture.

Protecting habitats for wildlife is a constant challenge, as our French hosts told us they are also discovering. These forests still captivate people, just as they inspired the myths and tales of earlier eras, and this can bring modern-day pressures to bear on the environment. But it is vital that they continue to be visited, understood, and respected.

The Wombles Visit The Heights It’s Official! The Wombles Are Coming To The Heights Of Abraham.

The award-winning Heights of Abraham has long been an “underground overground” experience with cable cars, cavern tours, exhibitions and playgrounds. It will come as no surprise then, to learn that Derbyshire’s oldest tourist attraction has caught the attention of a much-loved Wimbledon family known to millions as The Wombles.

Great Uncle Bulgaria and litter-picking expert Orinoco are heading to the Heights of Abraham this year and looking forward to meeting young and old visitors alike at weekends and during the school holidays throughout the remainder of 2025. Great Uncle Bulgaria was so taken with the Heights that the Wombles have decided to open an undercover exhibition of their life story at the Heights.

Opening in July, it tells the story of their meteoric rise from bedtime stories, to TV shows, films, fashion, pop charts and most recently CGI rendering across the world wide web.

The new exhibition will appeal to older visitors who will remember watching the TV show in the 1970’s, whilst younger visitors will be able to discover the Wombles for the first time, and learn about their passion for making good use of bad rubbish, recycling and being kind and considerate to one another.

Rupert Pugh, (Development Director for the Heights), explains “Though for many the Wombles may seem just a nostalgic childhood memory, their ethos of ‘make good use of bad rubbish’ has made a long-standing contribution to environmental education.

We are delighted that Uncle Bulgaria and friends have agreed to spend their holidays here, it’s a real privilege to meet them, and I think their messages are more relevant today than ever before”.

When can visitors see the wombles at the Heights?

The Wombles will be at the Heights every weekend now until 2 Nov and during school holidays. The new exhibition will open at the summit just before the summer school holidays.

The Wombles World of Making workshops will take place on selected dates in August.

Get Healthier, Happier, Connected And Creative Inspire: Culture, Learning and Libraries will begin a new programme to support the health and wellbeing of older people and people experiencing memory loss in two areas of the county, through a two-year programme of monthly music, visual arts, and ageing well interventions. The programme, titled Healthier Happier Connected Creative, is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, in partnership with Live Music Now and Your Health Notts, and will break down barriers preventing older people from participating in cultural and community events.

The Healthier Happier Connected Creative programme is launching at Inspire’s Libraries in Hucknall and Retford. With three different activities each month, these friendly group events are specifically designed to meet the needs of older people and people experiencing dementia or memory-loss and their families or carers, and will also welcome anyone at risk of social isolation and looking to meet new people.

The project will combat loneliness and isolation through three strands of cultural and wellbeing outreach, including music, creative arts, and health workshops, which will encourage socialising, memory, expression, community and activity.

Songs & Scones: Live Music Now’s popular Songs & Scones sessions will be returning to Retford Library and debuting at Hucknall Library as the first element of the Healthier Happier Connected Creative programme. Concerts will take place, focussing on music as a tool for wellbeing. These performances will bring live music, nostalgia, community and joy to older people who may otherwise find it difficult to access culture and music events, sparking memories

and sparking joy through the power of music.

Connect & Create: The second strand of the Healthier Happier Connected Creative programme is Connect & Create, which involves unleashing creativity through the artistic process. Creative wellbeing workshops will be delivered with commissioned artists, focussing on the joy of creation rather than on perfecting a finished piece.

Through art and creation, artists will encourage collaboration and community, and invite people to just enjoy the process, because who says kids get to have all the fun?

Mind & Movement: The third strand of the Healthier Happier Connected Creative programme is Mind & Movement, which will concentrate on promoting health and wellbeing through physical activity and accessible health information and support, for a fun, gentle way to stay active and social. Inspire’s partners at Your Health Notts will deliver opportunities for socialising, exercise and agerelevant health information.

It’s a great way to keep moving, meet others, and boost your wellbeing – all in a warm, welcoming space.

Valuing the health and wellbeing of older people in Nottinghamshire is an important step in itself, and Inspire and its partners hope that providing these workshops and offering age-related health support will build confidence and break down barriers, facilitating older people’s participation in arts, music and cultural events.

Nuclear Bunker: A Creative Archive Exhibition Worksop - Now until 17 Jul

FREE. Hidden away in a patch of wasteland in suburban Nottingham, a Cold War relic lies abandoned.

Known locally as ‘The Kremlin’, this is a huge nuclear bunker, constructed in 1952-53 as a Regional War Room and expanded in the early 1960s into a Regional Seat of Government from which a Commissioner and a staff of over 400 people would have governed whatever remained of the North Midlands after nuclear war. This exhibition explores the bunker through the eyes of writers and experts who ventured through its steel doors to explore its strange and haunting interior in the summer of 2024.

Building on the overwhelming success of last year’s event which saw the iconic Pride main stage relocate to Sneinton Market and over 10,000 attendees, Notts Pride 2025 will feature a jam-packed line-up of entertainment, including performances, live music, and activities for all ages. The parade will once again wind its way through the streets of Nottingham, ending in Sneinton Market, where the festivities will continue throughout the day.

There will be walk and sketch sessions with artist Martin Clarkson, learn how the forest works with Muji from Forest Medicine, and the chance to meet the Sheriff of Nottingham! highlights returning this year is the Sherwood Outlaws, offering thrilling archery experiences.

The festival is organised by the Sherwood Forest Trust, a Nottinghamshire-based charity that works to conserve and celebrate the area’s ancient woodlands and rich local heritage. From tree planting and habitat restoration to educational programmes and community projects, the Trust plays a vital role in preserving the legacy of Sherwood for future generations.

On Friday, the Festival also kicks off its programme of talks, with its newest patron, the inspirational Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason.

Musical Picnic. Families and friends can come together in the Minster’s Palace Gardens to enjoy performances by young musicians from The Minster School, the Nottingham Samba Collective, and the Nottingham Youth Jazz Orchestra.

A new addition to the programme will be a Saturday afternoon Relaxed Concert, One and All. Bringing Latin jazz and soulful grooves to Southwell, the Festival welcomes rising jazz star Inês Loubet for a Sunday afternoon gig in the Marquee.

ollowing the recent announcement of Saturday’s guest chefs—Simon Rimmer, Rosemary Shrager, and Paul A Young—the Festival of Food and Drink at Thoresby Park has just turned up the heat. Joining the line-up on Sunday 21st September are culinary stars John Torode, Francesco Mattana, and Chris Baber, completing a delicious weekend of foodie entertainment.

A hugely popular and influential figure on the UK culinary circuit, John Torode MBE is best known as the straighttalking co-host presenter and judge of MasterChef and Celebrity MasterChef (the world’s most successful cookery TV format). A regular guest chef on This Morning, John also appears with his wife Lisa Faulkner co-hosting John & Lisa's Weekend Kitchen on ITV, a hugely successful series, now in its 9th series.

John was awarded an MBE in 2022 for services to Food, Broadcast & Charity.

His cookery books and writings have received huge critical acclaim, including the bestselling My Kind of Food, and Sydney to Seoul. His new book entitled John & Lisa’s Kitchen was published in 2024.

Leading Italian chef, Francesco Mattana, also takes to the stage on the Sunday. Francesco has built a loyal following on his social

media platforms, with over 1.3M followers across Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and YouTube. Francesco is an advocate for eating sustainably, reducing food waste and following the seasons, something that he’s learnt from his Sardinian upbringing.

In 2018, he turned to teaching fulltime and was the Head Teaching Chef at Jamie Oliver's Cookery School in London. He’s also worked and collaborated with Eataly - La Scuola, Emilia's Pasta, Food at 52, The Pasta Academy run by Pasta Evangelists and Bread Ahead Baking School. He is currently writing his own book, due to be published in 2026.

Also appearing on the Sunday is Chris Baber who began working under critically acclaimed Michelin-starred chef Atul Kocchar. Partnered with his background in athletics and passion for fitness, Chris has developed a unique approach to eating well and has just had his second Men’s Fitness cover and recipe series, blending his passion for food and fitness.

Chris began his career winning BBC1s ‘Yes Chef’ in 2016 and has since cooked on Saturday Kitchen, was the resident Chef on ITV’s ‘Cooking with the Stars Extra Helpings’ and has recently filmed with Robson Green for the highest rating BBC documentary

Invisible Light – Lumen Photograms And Alternative Process Prints An Alternative Photography Workshop With Alan Withington 16 Jul, 1pm – 4pm

This hands-on workshop introduces some of the techniques behind the images featured in the ‘Invisible Light’ exhibition. You’ll be guided through the process of creating beautiful Lumen Photograms using botanicals such as leaves and flowers, on vintage darkroom photographic paper.

We will be exploring a few different Lumen Photogram techniques in this workshop. The beautiful Photograms produced are a form of ‘Camera-less Photography’ and an ‘Alternative Processes’.

Each Lumen Photogram produced is a unique artwork borrowing from techniques developed at the dawn of photography in the 1840s.

All materials are provided, and no prior experience is necessary.

You’ll be guided step-by-step by experienced tutor Alan Withington to create your own unique photographic pieces. Free admission.

Did Retfordians compare their home town with Austen’s fictional small towns, Meryton and Highbury?

The ‘Invisible Light’ Exhibition By Alan Withington Now until 31 Aug

This exhibition showcases images created using ultraviolet (UV) light, which is invisible to most people.

Each photograph carries a hidden meaning, much like the unseen light that produced them. The images capture well-loved places and evoke deep feelings.

The techniques featured are known as ‘alternative processes,’ blending ancient photographic methods with digital elements to produce positive images. These methods, which use paper ‘negatives’ and avoid darkroom chemicals, include in-camera cyanotypes, in-camera lumens, lumen photograms and solargraphs Alan Withington, a photographer who has embraced these techniques over the past five years, presents images that require long exposure times, ranging from 45 minutes to over four months. His work is a response to the fastpaced modern world and the challenges posed by AI to creative authenticity, emphasizing the value of ‘real’ photography crafted with patience and care.

Botanical Art Paintings & Drawings By Betty Jarrett

his Summer the Cath Ray Gallery in Retford will be full of flowers as the work of botanical artist, Betty Jarrett will be on show throughout July and August.

Betty was born and brought up in Bristol and studied Zoology, Botany, and Art, before moving on to Homerton College, Cambridge, where she specialised in Painting and Sculpture. She then taught for about twenty years before training as a psychotherapist in London.

During her time living and working in the city, she continued to paint and attended Life Drawing classes at the Harrow School of Art. Before leaving London, Betty had a solo exhibition at The Healing Centre at St. Marylebone Church on the Euston Road.

Betty then moved North but continued to attend Life Drawing sessions in Burnley and Leeds, where she also completed an Open College of the Arts Diploma course in Drawing.

After this Betty went to Harlow Carr Gardens for a weekend Botanical Painting course. This was a natural progression for Betty after her earlier studies in Botany and she enjoyed the course so much that she applied for a Society of Botanical Art Diploma course. She completed it in 2010 (with a Higher Pass)

and Betty’s final portfolio painting of apples was chosen by the Society as its advertisement for the next two year course, and it is this painting that will hang at the entrance to the exhibition in Retford.

This diploma coincided with her retirement as a therapist and Betty then had much more time for painting. After many years of painting landscapes in oils, Betty had found working in watercolour very challenging and had completed her diploma using gouache.

Since joining the Northern Society for Botanical Art, Betty has discovered the joy of working in coloured pencil and graphite and these are now the media she uses most in her current work. Over the last twelve years, Betty has regularly exhibited with the Northern Society at their exhibitions in The Graves Gallery in Sheffield, Doncaster Art Gallery, Patchings Gallery, and Southwell Minster.

Many of these original artworks will be available to buy and Betty also has a popular range of cards available at the gallery.

Could You Lead By Example?

Paws, leads, and good deeds: how dog lovers are helping wildlife one wag at a time. By Erin McDaid, Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust.

A

fter decades of caring for nature reserves across the county, Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust is used to balancing the sometimes-competing needs of people and nature, but one issue that has become particularly challenging is dogs on nature reserves.

Whilst some people believe that dogs shouldn’t be allowed on nature reserves, we’re keen to strike a balance. We’ve long permitted dogs ‘under close control’ - but increasing dog ownership, partly stoked by a rush to take up dog ownership during pandemic lockdowns; increasing problems with owners not keeping their dogs under control or picking up after them led us to harden our policy. By the letter of the law, owners must keep their dogs under close control when in public. We now ask that dogs are always kept on a lead when visiting our sites.

On popular sites such as Idle Valley Nature Reserve, our nuanced policy shift has had little impact despite increases in signage and public statements. When the issue of dog management came out as one of the top issues highlighted by our Attenborough for All listening exercise (Attenborough is our oldest and most visited reserve), we decide to tackle it head on whilst ensuring responsible dog owners, and their pets, remained welcome to enjoy the reserve.

Given that 74% of visitors taking part in our surveys said that they feel more connected to nature as a result of visiting and over 50% say that their visits have inspired them to do something to help wildlife - our aim was to take a positive and

balanced approach so that everyone, including responsible dog owners can lead wilder lives and continue to benefit from visiting the reserve and be inspired to act for nature.

Where possible we try to avoid re-inventing the wheel – so we reviewed a range of approaches used elsewhere. As only a proportion of owners cause problems, and many are just unaware of the impacts their dogs and their dogs’ deposits can have on nature and the environment; we chose to focus on engaging people with a view to changing their behaviour rather than a heavy-handed approach.

We were drawn to approaches that involved responsible dog owners as part of the solution. Before long we’d christened our new campaign ‘Lead by Example’ and set out to recruit a team of ‘Ambassadogs’ (and their owners!) to champion the scheme. Rather than being a gimmick, putting dogs and responsible owners at the heart of the campaign is designed to bring people with us and to challenge any perception that the Trust was ‘anti’ dog. We also felt that messages about the importance of keeping your dog on a lead and picking up after your dog would be more impactful if being demonstrated by dog owners that love our reserves.

Why is responsible dog walking important?

Even the most gentle and well-behaved dog is seen as a predator by wildlife. Birds, mammals, and reptiles may react with fear, using up vital energy trying to escape—even if the dog doesn’t chase them. This stress can reduce their chances of survival, especially during breeding season and harsh weather conditions.

Keeping your dog on a short lead when visiting a nature reserve can help prevent nest abandonment, especially by ground-nesting birds like skylarks, lapwings, and nightjars.

Dogs wading into ponds or chasing through grass can trample fragile habitats, disturb hibernating species and even kill small creatures accidentally; curious dogs can also disturb or destroy the nests and shelters of small mammals such as hedgehogs and voles.

Keeping dogs on leads and away from wildlife also reduces the risk of dogs transmitting diseases such as parvovirus, distemper, and leptospirosis to wild animals. Our sites aren’t just nature reserves – they’re also home to conservation grazing livestock. Even the most well-trained dogs have an instinct to chase, which can cause stress, injury, or even pregnancy loss in grazing animals. It's also worth remembering that not everyone loves dogs – so by keeping your dog on a lead you are ensuring your pet doesn’t impact on other visitors’ enjoyment. When it comes to picking up after your dog, dog poo left behind isn’t just unpleasant—it can contain parasites that can cause serious illness for animals but particularly in young children that encounter contaminated soil.

As a dog owner myself – I feel much more comfortable asking someone else to put their dog on a lead when visiting our reserves if I’ve got my dog Ginny with me (Ambassadog Ginny pictured above).

Rolling out the campaign Whilst the impetus for developing the approach came from the Attenborough for All project, we’re keen to apply the learning to other reserves - and the scheme is being rolled out at Skylarks (at Holme Pierrepont) and Idle Valley (Retford), with scope to recruit and support volunteers elsewhere in future.

Lead by Example aims to encourage and rewarding visitors (and their dogs!) who support our work to provide spaces where wildlife can thrive, free from disturbance. Volunteers will demonstrate positive behaviour by keeping their dog on a lead and picking up after them and chatting to fellow dog owners in a friendly way about why responsible walking matters and rewarding those who do! Volunteers and their dogs will wear branded gear, hand out leaflets to help spread the message and on occasions hand out treats and vouchers to encourage others to do the right thing. To reinforce the message about keeping dogs on leads and clearing up dog mess we’ve also rolled out a range of new signage.

Breaking The Mould Rachel Carter’s sculptures stand proud in world-class gardens and heritage sites, arresting in their form and visually delightful. Made went to visit the sculptor to discover their deeper narrative of history, identity, and rebellion against convention.

A

s we swept into the Nottinghamshire studio of sculptor Rachel Carter, we find more than just tools and metal. What we actually see is a life woven—quite literally—into every curve, cast, and coil.

Rachel’s fascination with how things come together began not in an art gallery, but in a Derbyshire kitchen, where her mum handed her a hand-cranked Victorian sewing machine bought from the local cattle market. “I’ve never used anything else since,” she laughs. It was a quiet beginning to a life defined by making—where sewing and structure met curiosity and craft.

Her father, a miner with a knack for motorcycle repairs, unknowingly laid the groundwork for her understanding of mechanical processes. Unlike her brother, Rachel took to the tools instinctively, developing a love for practical problemsolving that would later serve her artistry.

But when GCSE choices rolled around, her natural inclination toward woodwork and metal was gently nudged aside.

“I was told by the teacher it wouldn’t be fair to the boys if he had to spend all his time teaching me, a girl”, she recalls.

Shy and unsure, she let it go. Yet her father—unaware of how profoundly his words would echo—encouraged her toward cookery. “He was speaking from the heart. The pits were closing, and he knew my future would have to be different.”

‘There’s a sculptor in you.’

He was right. I loved the physicality of making.”

Pilgrim Woman: Gainsborough.

The Pilgrim Woman stands by the waters edge, contemplative of the journey she’s about to make and the home she’s leaving.

So off she went to catering college. But that tug to make never quite went away.

So, how did the transition to renowned sculptor come about?

Well, years later, as a mother working in hotel management, Rachel woke one morning with a clear thought: this isn’t where I’m meant to be. She saw an advert for a local art course at the Arthur Mee Centre—half an A-Level in Fine Art, just two afternoons a week. Nervous but compelled, she brought along some of her homemade pieces. The tutor took one look and said, “You clearly love the techniques.

Give the course a go.” That single decision re-routed her life.

What followed was a whirlwind: AS and A-Levels, a Foundation year while pregnant with her second child, and eventually a degree in Applied Arts at Derby University. “Tom Hackett, a renowned sculptor, once told me, ‘There’s a sculptor in you.’ He was right. I loved the physicality of making.”

Rachel’s creative evolution mirrored her personal one— mother, student, artist. She found her rhythm in materials, especially during a transformative third-year project that fused basket weaving with metalwork. “It was freeing— bending, welding, weaving. All my passions came together.”

Her signature combination of willow and steel earned acclaim.

Installations appeared at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, even travelling across Europe and the U.S.

But willow, though beautiful, is fleeting. “I wanted to make something by hand that would last,” she reminisces. It seems this was the catalyst for trying to find a more innovative solution that would give her the degree of flexibility she needed to manipulative form to the creative designs she had in mind. Rachel began listening more closely to the materials. “Rather than forcing them to behave, I started asking what they wanted to do,” she says.

A conversation with lecturer Jerry James turned her toward bronze. “It seemed impossible at first. Everything I did relied on woven intricacies that moulds can’t work with due to undercuts within weaving.” Later, at a sculptor's roundtable at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, she was the only woman.

“They all said it couldn’t be done when I broached the subject of weaving bronze, but something inside me told me to persist!”

A pivotal visit to the Royal Academy’s 5000 Years of Bronze exhibition only fuelled her resolve. “None of it looked like what I wanted to make. I knew I had to try but I just couldn’t find anyone who knew how it was possible.”

Rachel then approached Pangolin Editions, one of Britain’s leading bronze foundries, with her radical idea: to weave a sculpture and cast that into bronze. “They brought in every specialist and we spent a day trying every method we could think of, problem solving, and we still couldn’t find a way.

But then someone in the wax department said, ‘Could you weave in wax?’ it was that lightbulb moment.”

Rachel Carter - Bronze Grand Sphere, within a private garden in Bath, UK. It features delicate weaving that fools the viewer, what appears as an open and delicate hand woven sculpture is, in actual fact, over 250 kilos in weight and nestles gently into the landscape.

So, with Arts Council backing, and the new mouldable wax in place, Rachel created her first bronze-woven sphere— debuted at the 100th RHS Chelsea Flower Show and later installed permanently at Belper River Gardens, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was a ground breaking moment and the new chapter in Bronze she had longed for.

Fast forward, and Rachel is still thoroughly immersed in an exploratory phase of working with bronze—testing new techniques, and always blending ancient lost-wax processes with modern tools like 3D scanning, with her eye on what the material wants to reveal, and dipping her toe in the past and the present.

With the lost-wax process now seamlessly implemented, we wanted to understand more beyond the material and process, and find out what is inspiring Rachel’s work.

She confirms, with a smile, that it is deeply rooted in heritage—particularly her family’s history in the Midlands’ cotton industry. Through an ancestry project purely out of her own intrigue, Rachel uncovered a powerful lineage: a great-great-great-grandfather who was a blacksmith and nailer; generations of lace makers and bobbin winders; children who laboured in Darley Abbey’s cotton mills.

From there, an invitation to volunteer with a local organisation “Bright Ideas, Nottingham's” initiative uncovered a deeper connection: the link between

Derbyshire’s cotton mills and the cotton plantations using enslaved African’s trafficked as part of the Transatlantic Slave Economy “My ancestors were part of this global story, and I had no idea!”, she exclaims.

That connection sparked her next body of work—Standing in This Place— a life-size bronze sculpture created by Rachel and the Legacy Makers volunteers which was installed in Nottingham’s Broad Marsh area at the start of 2025. The statue represents a white mill worker/lace maker and a Black enslaved woman, highlighting the connection between the cotton industry and the transatlantic slave economy.

Our attention also turns to nature and Rachel’s chosen sculptural alignment with the great outdoors. “Landscape is everything,” she says. “Sculptures should enhance the planting and vice versa.” We learn that her clients come to her with their garden projects and want to understand how they can bring harmony through art and landscaping— something that thrills her every time. It’s a simple process of identifying the nuances of the garden space and how a sculpture, or several pieces, could enhance the environment but also seamlessly live alongside the plants.

Rachel smiles, “My show gardens, commissions, and collaborations often begin with tea and a chat—talking through the vision, the space, the story – I like to visit the garden space, walk around, understand the environment, and it becomes an intuitive process.”

These are pieces that are rarely just bedded down; they are nestled, framed by planting that lifts the eye and anchors the form. “It’s a three-way relationship between the garden, the client, and me. It’s collaborative, organic, and led by the environment.” We can see it’s Rachel’s true passion.

The same ethos extends to her teaching. Through workshops, online tutorials, and YouTube videos—the latter particularly popular—she makes her practice accessible. And she’s a firm advocate for mistakes and learning. “They matter”, Rachel explains. “I tell my students to never throw them away—to learn from each one, as it is all part of the fun and pushes you to explore your process further.”

So, what’s in store over the next few years? - An exploration of heritage through weaving and sculpture. With a small grant and a newly acquired 8-shaft loom, she began weaving cotton panels that will be shaped into 3D forms and eventually cast in bronze. “This phase is quieter, more inward. I’m still making, still experimenting, but it’s about layering stories—mine and others—through thread and metal.”

It seems that, having just completed this demanding, thoroughly fascinating three-year sculptural journey, Rachel is returning to the loom with fresh focus. She’s working on a new series— quiet, tactile, reflective—that builds on her understanding of heritage and materiality. “Once I’ve got the prototypes, I’ll begin thinking about where this will live—whether as a show, an installation, or something else entirely.” We’re intrigued, and will be keeping an eye out to see what comes next.

Our visit to the studio has been enlightening and in Rachel we see someone who doesn’t just break the mould, but reshapes it. From forged steel to woven bronze, from cotton mills to Chelsea gardens, her work is an ongoing conversation between the past and the possible.

And as she threads new stories through loom and landscape, she invites us to ask: what might we discover if we dared to make with our hands, and listen with our hearts?

oming back to Nottingham after more than 20 years living in Scotland, Lucy Brouwer noticed buildings she did not remember seeing before. The Lace Market and Hockley had changed so much since the 1990s—the buildings were cleaner, and there was a vibrant shopping and arts scene.

Fothergill's Office really stood out to her; it was like no building she’d seen before. She immediately wanted to know who built it and why. As Lucy learned more about Nottingham’s architecture, the people who designed it, and the purposes for which the buildings were built, she became much more aware of the city’s history. She also discovered that she had storytelling skills she hadn’t realised she possessed.

She tested the route, guided a few friends—and discovered, to her surprise, that she truly enjoyed leading tours. Her enthusiasm, people told her, was infectious when she was out on the street leading the tour. “It’s one of those things you don’t realise you can do until you do it!” she said.

“Architecture can seem like a dry subject,” she admits, “but I think that it’s one of the most accessible art forms—it’s in the streets all around us. Once you know how to look, architecture is a gateway into the history of the people who built the buildings and the people who used them.”

And Fothergill’s work is hard to miss once you know what to Lucy studied History of Art at Glasgow University. She was look for. The whole façade is like a three-dimensional portfolio using all the different elements and materials Fothergill had made his own. From the decorative bargeboards on the gable to the arches over the windows, the tourelle that projects into the street, to his name over the door in gold lettering, every part of the building is a very personal statement. The central section is a homage to his architectural inspirations, with busts of AWN Pugin and GE Street, the names of other influential architects GG Scott, William Burges, and RN Shaw, plus terracotta panels showing the history of architecture by sculptor Benjamin Creswick. If that wasn’t enough, there is a large figure that looks very like Fothergill himself, dressed in medieval clothing with plans in his hand and a cathedral at his feet. Lucy thinks it’s a very personal statement of intent: “I can build these things for you.”

Inside, the building has been lovingly converted into an Airbnb flat, still full of original character—coffered ceilings, Doulton fireplaces, and all the charm of its former life.

Local builders on Lucy’s tours have even pointed out that the builders working for Fothergill very often used an unusual brick bond—the pattern of stretchers (the long side of a brick) and headers (the short end)—called English Garden Wall.

So, there are two rows of long stretchers and then one row of short headers to make up the walls. Once Lucy noticed this, she realised most buildings of the period use a pattern called English Bond, which alternates rows of headers and stretchers. It was possible to see how the buildings were subtly different from the work of other architects. “This sort of thing really brings out my nerdy side!” she admitted.

Often—but not always—Fothergill also left literal marks on his work—his initials, carved into stone, often hidden but deliberate.

The Express Newspaper Office has two instances of this. The building was originally built in stone in a Gothic Revival style in 1876. There is a small monogram “FW” hidden under one of the arches of the entrance portico. In 1899, Fothergill returned to the project to add an extra floor at the top of the building—to house the newspaper’s new Linotype machines for setting the print.

By then, he had swapped his forename and surname around; he was originally named Fothergill Watson, with Fothergill being his mother Mary Anne’s maiden name. In 1892, he changed his name by deed poll to Watson Fothergill to honour his mother’s name, and Lucy thinks it was because the Fothergill lineage was somewhat more distinguished than the Watsons. “If you look up when you’re on Parliament Street,” she said, “you can see the name Watson Fothergill carved under the pentice roof of the extra floor. One man with two names on the same building.

I don’t know of another instance of this anywhere else.”

All the buildings on Lucy’s Watson Fothergill Walk are Grade II listed, a testament to their historical and architectural value.

Most have been adapted for new uses—flats, shops, schools— but they remain vibrant, lived-in parts of the city. Lucy is passionate about the need to retrofit rather than demolish heritage buildings, praising the dedicated craftspeople who restore these intricate structures and calling for more training in such specialist skills.

Lucy tries to make her tours different from anything else available in Nottingham—you don’t have to know anything about Nottingham or architecture to join in. “That’s the great

thing about architecture,” she explained, “if you find out how to read a building, then you can start to discover all kinds of things about how and why it was built.” She also finds that once you start to look at buildings, you become interested in the history of a place and the people who lived and worked there.

She aims to be informative and entertaining. Besides Fothergill, Lucy has also designed tours looking at the work of architect Thomas Chambers Hine, whose buildings are all over Nottingham. Recently, she started exploring the architecture of the 1920s and 1930s, and how Art Deco influenced Nottingham’s buildings of that period.

“You can get a feel for how the city grew and developed, what kinds of things people were doing for work or fun, and how those buildings are used today.” People often tell her they have walked past a building hundreds of times but never noticed it before. “Once you’ve been on one of my walks,” Lucy said, “you’ll be looking up and noticing details that you previously did not even notice.”

Lucy gets a lot of satisfaction from people’s response to her tours, and she often gets asked for more tours about other buildings. Her research has now expanded to include Fothergill’s assistant Lawrence George Summers and 20thcentury architects like W.B. Starr. The demand for more tours continues to grow, and Lucy is thriving in this newfound role.

“It’s great to have found something that I have a real aptitude for and enjoy doing,” she said. “I like finding out new things, learning about subjects in depth, and then presenting that

knowledge in an entertaining and accessible way.” Doing tours and talks has introduced her to many people who care about Nottingham’s history and built environment, and she has made some new friends along the way.

For Lucy, Nottingham is a city full of stories waiting to be uncovered. “Sometimes people think there’s not much left here, or that it’s nothing special. But when you start really looking, the buildings are full of life, of character, and history.” And thanks to Lucy’s tours, more and more people are looking—up. Preserving these buildings isn’t just about nostalgia—it’s about pride and place. “A city is only as good as its buildings. They give it personality and soul. Nottingham should be proud of what it has—and it should look after it.”

Swapping heavy bedside books for summer reads (think escapism and optimism) is another subtle shift with maximum mood-lifting potential.

The bathroom: spa meets beach hut There’s something delicious about a summer bathroom. Swap out dark or wintery towels for crisp white or bright striped ones — bonus points for seaside deckchair vibes.

Summer is a feast for the senses, so bring a little of that into your kitchen. showhome designed using affordable high street brands has been unveiled at Keepmoat’s Beeston Canalside development in Nottingham.

The top 10 housebuilder worked with Oakham-based interior designers DECO ID to create a unique showhome which is fully equipped with affordable high street retailers including Dunelm, Zara Home, IKEA and H&M Home.

The two bedroom, one bathroom showhome is designed to provide a practical guide to fun and colourful design elements for young buyers in the Nottingham area. All of the interiors were sourced from affordable retailers within a half an hour's drive.

The brief focussed on achieving a highend look while maintaining an accessible price point, with all items sourced from local stores for an attainable aesthetic.

The home features vibrant colours and maximalism as well as pieces from collaborations with designers such as Eleanor Bowmer and Dunelm X Sophie Robinson to create a bright and chic interior. Highlights include a Dunelm scallop edge rug, Julien Bowen dining chairs, and Next leopard print lampshade.

Visitors were able to look around the two bedroom home, built in the ‘Fairham’ style, at the launch event in early June this year.

The multi-million pound site will deliver new energy efficient and affordable homes, transforming the disused brownfield land.

deliver 604 high quality, multi-tenure new homes, with construction due to complete in 2029.

In Full Bloom: Summer In The Garden Smart, simple tasks to keep your veggies thriving, flowers blooming, and loungers well-earned. By Dene Wood, Head Gardener at Clumber Park.

ummer is here, and our gardens are bursting with activity. We spend more time than ever enjoying our outdoors spaces now, so here are a few jobs that will make you feel like you've earned that sun lounger time.

Edible

It's prime time for harvesting and planting vegetables. Enjoy crops like tomatoes, cucumbers, and courgettes as they ripen.

Regularly pick these to encourage further production. Plant late-season crops such as spinach, radishes, and lettuce to extend your harvest well into autumn. Once summer-fruiting raspberries are done, you can prune the spent canes right back to the ground.

Ornamentals Deadheading spent flowers from plants such as roses, dahlias and sweet peas will help prolong flowering. Mulching around the base of plants after rainfall helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Consider drying some flowers—at Clumber Park, this gives us floristry material well into winter.

Lawns & Hedges Maintaining a lush, green lawn during the summer requires regular care. Mowing should be done frequently but avoid

cutting the grass too short to prevent stress and browning.

Where possible, watering deeply once or twice a week will encourage deep root growth, making the lawn more resilient to drought. Most hedges can be given a final trim towards the end of August and won’t grow much after that.

Watering A common challenge now is irrigation. Following one of the driest springs on record, and varying restrictions around hose pipe use, it’s never been more pertinent to consider your watering strategy. Maximising rainwater collection by connecting a water butt to a downpipe, or using grey water from sinks and showers can all help solve this conundrum.

Group together plants in containers and water in the cooler parts of the day where possible.

Remember to keep bird baths and ponds topped up so for thirsty wildlife and most importantly of all, enjoy!

Nottinghamshire’s Countryside Escape Discover the Bingham circular with travel writer and photojournalist Sally Outram.

et amid the gentle landscapes of the Vale of Belvoir, Bingham is a super little market town with a deeprooted charm. Just nine miles east of Nottingham, it is a place where the past and present quietly coexist, surrounded by greenery and shaped by history.

You do not have to dig deep in Bingham to find its roots. The town is situated close to the ancient Fosse Way, once a key Roman road, with archaeological finds hinting at thousands of years of settlement.

Long before Bingham became the town we know today, the area was covered by a vast lake, and the original settlement may have stood in a completely different spot. Geologists and local historians believe the first village was located near what is now Crow Close; an unremarkable stretch of land that holds a fascinating secret.

Local tales speak of two small islands that once rose from the water. Today, Holme Farm occupies one of them, while the other is home to Wiverton Hall. This early village, often referred to as the "lost village of Bingham," is believed to have been destroyed by a powerful storm that swept through the region.

Today, Bingham’s past is written in brick and stone, especially around the Market Place, where the 19th-century Buttercross still stands as a symbol of its long-running market tradition.

At the heart of the town is St. Mary and All Saints Church, a 13th-century landmark, whose weathered spire has seen civil wars and industrial booms with generations of community life etched into every corner.

Bingham is full of appeal, with local shops lining the high street, from delis and florists to butchers and lovely little cafes.

You will find excellent coffee, cakes and other tasty treats in the independent establishments dotted around the town.

Like many small towns, Bingham owes part of its development to the railway. The original Bingham Station, opened in the 1850s by the Great Northern Railway, brought new energy and connection to the area. While the old station buildings have long since changed, the town is still served by a rail line, with regular trains linking it to Nottingham and Grantham.

For history buffs, it is easy to imagine the station in its heyday: steam trains arriving with market goods and the quiet hum of a town finding its place in the modern age. Although more peaceful now, the railway remains a gentle thread connecting Bingham to the broader counties.

What really sets Bingham apart is how close it is to nature.

The countryside is never more than a few minutes’ walk from the centre. Footpaths weave through fields and hedgerows, and walkers often follow the Bingham Linear Trail, a green corridor reclaimed from the disused railway track, perfect for spotting birds or simply stretching your legs in peace.

If you are up for more of a challenge, the surrounding Vale of Belvoir offers miles of gentle walking and cycling routes, big skies, soft hills, and quiet lanes lined with hawthorn.

at Bingham Station on Station Street, turn right heading south towards the old Buttercross in the market place.

2. Continue down Station Street until you reach the corner with Church Street, where you will find the Buttercross.

3. Carry on along Church Street, where you will see the spire of St. Mary’s and All Saints Church.

If the doors are open, take a moment to pop inside for a quiet look at its beautiful stained glass and gothic arches.

4. After the church, turn right onto Cherry Street, then almost immediately, turn left onto Fosters Lane. Continue along until you reach Cogley Lane, where you will see a play area and green space.

5. From the park, follow Long Acre

East westward. This turns into The Banks, a residential road.

Turn left onto Tithby Road and walk a short distance before spotting the railway bridge, which is the gateway to the linear walk. This stretch of the walk is more nature focused and is a dedicated path following the line of the old railway.

6. The linear walk gently curves and will bring you to the old station house onto Nottingham Road. Follow Nottingham Road eastwards. Continue until you reach the corner of Market Street.

Turn left onto Market Street, then turn right onto the Market Place.

7. Station Street is immediately off the Market place to retrace your steps back to the station.

s our parents grow older, we often find ourselves in completely uncharted emotional territory. We are not really programmed to watch the people who once raised us begin to slow down—physically, mentally, or emotionally—and it can often evoke a mix of grief, anxiety, and helplessness.

But through my coaching journey and personal experiences, I’ve learned that there are tools available to support us in navigating this stage of life with compassion, resilience, and even joy.

As always with me, our brain’s ability to adapt, change, and reframe how we see things is at the core of these techniques— and with practice, they can truly help us through these difficult challenges.

Rather than focusing solely on managing any perceived diminishing of our loved ones’ capabilities, these tools invite us to reframe our experiences and relationships through a lens of meaning, strength, and connection.

Practice Strength Spotting Instead of dwelling on what your parents are finding more difficult, focus on the strengths that still shine through. Whether it’s their humour, perseverance, creativity, or kindness, identifying and naming these qualities aloud can help preserve their dignity and strengthen your bond.

Studies suggest that strength-spotting not only enhances well-being in the person being acknowledged (your parent) but also boosts the mental health of the observer (you!). Make it a weekly habit to reflect on and share one strength you noticed in your parent that week. This small act fosters mutual appreciation and helps counter the narrative of decline.

Cultivate Gratitude Conversations Ageing often brings loss in one form or another—mobility, memory, even identity. Counterbalance this with intentional gratitude practices. Set aside time during visits or phone calls to engage in “gratitude conversations.” Ask your parent,

“What made you smile this week?” or “What are you thankful for today?” Share your own answers, too. Expressing gratitude has been shown to increase life satisfaction and can strengthen family bonds, especially during difficult transitions.

Create Moments Of Flow Together Flow, a concept introduced by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, is the state of being fully immersed and engaged in an activity. Helping an ageing parent find or maintain moments of flow—whether through cooking, puzzles, gardening, or storytelling—can significantly lift their mood and give them a greater sense of purpose. Better still, engage in these activities together. These shared experiences promote connection and joy, reinforcing the value of the present moment even as circumstances evolve.

Embrace Meaning-Making Ageing can prompt deep existential questions for both parents and their adult children. Positive psychology encourages us to find meaning in life’s challenges. Engage in legacy-building conversations: ask your parent about their life stories, lessons, and dreams. Record these memories if they’re open to it. Not only does this validate their journey, but it can also help you find purpose in your caregiving. Research shows that meaning-making can buffer against burnout and increase psychological resilience.

Ultimately, positive psychology does not deny the difficulties of ageing for all involved—it simply reminds us that joy, connection, and meaning are still accessible. By focusing on what is still possible, rather than on what has been or will be lost, we can honour our parents' final chapters not only with care, but with celebration. And in doing so, we nourish our own emotional well-being, transforming this bittersweet stage of life into one rich with love, growth, and gratitude.

Asparagus With Sundried Tomato Pangrattato

Delia Smith’s ‘Cheats No Panic Hollandaise Sauce’

Ingredients 1 slice sourdough (80g) or wholemeal bread 25g semi dried tomatoes 1 tbsp fresh parsley 25g parmesan cheese 1 tbsp garlic infused rapeseed oil 10 asparagus spears

This sauce is one I often make to serve with Asparagus.

Alternatively, if you are in a hurry there are several Hollandaise sauces you can buy in Supermarkets that come in a jar.

To Serve Hollandaise sauce or Mayonnaise

Method 1. Place the bread, tomatoes, parsley and cheese into a food processor and blitz to form bread crumbs.

2. Fry the breadcrumb mix in the oil until they have crisped up a little 3. Cook the asparagus in a little water for 6-8 minutes.

4. Place the asparagus onto a serving plate. Sprinkle over half of the pangrattato (the rest can be used with pasta bakes or even over fish) and serve with a hollandaise sauce.

Serves 2 Cooks Tip - Try omitting the oil and parmesan and using chopped bacon pieces instead. Serve with a poached egg.

Delia’s recipe 3 rounded tbsp crème fraîche 1 tsp cornflour 2 egg yolks ¾ tbsp white wine vinegar ½ tbsp lemon juice 50g butter, softened

Method 1. Spoon the crème fraîche into a small pan and add the rest of the ingredients, except the butter.

2. Heat on a medium heat and whisk continually until the sauce has thickened.

3. Remove from the heat and whisk in the butter and serve.

NB. Make in advance and reheat in a bowl over a pan of water.

Open Smoked Salmon Wraps Soft tortilla wraps are a fantastic way to create quick, tasty, and healthy meals. Fill wholemeal wraps with plenty of fresh salad and your choice of cold meats, chicken, or salmon. Or try making delicious fajitas by adding sautéed vegetables and beans. One of my favourite quick recipes for the summer!

Ingredients 2 wholemeal wraps 4 tbsp low fat cream cheese 40g rocket, spinach and watercress salad 100g smoked salmon 4 sliced radishes 12 slices cucumber ½ small red onion, thinly sliced ½ lemon for squeezing

Method 1. Spread the cream cheese over each wrap.

2. Top with the salad leaves and remaining ingredients.

3. Squeeze over the lemon before serving either open or rolled.

Serves 2 Cooks Tip - Try adding capers or sliced gherkins and sliced hard boiled eggs as an alternative to the radish and cucumber for a Scandinavian style wrap.

Gnocchi, Mozzarella & Tomato Bake This simple recipe can be served with a salad or extra vegetables or even as a starter with a few rocket leaves for four people. I used Rana Tomato and Mozzarella Gnocchi for this recipe but it works well with home made or plain gnocchi too.

Ingredients 1 x 280g pkt gnocchi (filled or plain) 1 x 260g pkt Galbani Mozzarella Balls 2 tbsp pesto 10 cherry tomatoes, halved 2 tbsp pesto 10g grated Parmesan To Garnish Basil leaves

Method 1. Gently mix together the Gnocchi, Mozzarella and Pesto in a bowl.

2. Place into a small casserole dish, add the halved cherry tomatoes and sprinkle over the grated parmesan.

Bake in a preheated oven 180ºC/Gas 5 for 20 minutes. Garnish with Basil leaves before serving.

Serves 2

Chocolate Mousse Ingredients 60g dark choc 60g milk chocolate 10 marshmallows 150g yoghurt 150g double cream, whisked until slightly thickened Strawberries, raspberries or black cherries to decorate

Method 1. Place the chocolate and marshmallow into a bowl over a pan of hot water and leave to melt.

Alternatively microwave the chocolate for 1-2 minutes on medium power.

Add the marshmallow and microwave for another ½-1 minute. Cool slightly 2. Whisk in 100g of the yogurt and all the thickened cream.

3. Transfer the mix into 6 small glasses or 4 wine glasses. Refrigerate for 1 hour.

4. Once set, top with the remaining yoghurt and chosen fruit.

Makes 6 mini mousses or 2-3 larger ones.

NB. Use all dark choc in the recipe if you prefer. Try adding 1-2 tablespoons Baileys, Rum or Brandy to the mix.

Individual Summer Fruit Pastry Flats These flats are simpler to make than tarts as you just need to roll the pastry out and use a cutter or knife rather than lining tart tins.

Using self - raising flour results in a softer pastry. Use plain flour if you prefer a crisper base.

Ingredients For pastry 175g self raising flour 100g butter 25g icing sugar 1 egg yolk 1 tbsp cold water flour for rolling Filling 200 ml crème fraîche, thick yogurt, or whipped double cream 2 tbsp lemon curd 200g assorted summer berries Sliced kiwi or nectarine, mint or lemon balm, and icing sugar for decoration

Method 1. Make pastry either by hand or in a food processor. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface into a large round, cover with cling film and chill for 15 minutes.

2. Preheat the oven to Fan 190ºC/Gas 5 3. Cut the pastry into out 6 x 4 inch rounds or squares.

4. Place onto a baking sheet and bake for 15-18 minutes.

5. Once cooked, leave to cool on a wire tray.

6. Mix together the crème fraîche and lemon curd in a small bowl.

7. Place each pastry round onto a serving plate and place a spoonful of the lemon cream onto each round.

8. Top with assorted summer fruits and sprig of mint or lemon balm and dust with icing sugar.

Move over Rosé, it’s time for Provence White!

While we see an ever-growing trend for nothing but Rosé at this time of the year, there are, however, some fabulous white wines from the region that sometimes get overlooked in a sea of pink! Château Saint Pierre Prieur White, Côtes de Provence, France, £19.99, is made using a blend of Rolle and Semillon grapes which are then aged in 70% old oak barrels, spending eight months on fine lees. The resulting wine is a delight with aromas of white flowers, almonds and a touch of honey. In terms of

pairing this wine we suggest a decadent dish of fish baked in a rich, creamy sauce.

Light in style, yet seductive and sublime…

We try not to have favourites but when it comes to Pinot Noir it’s almost always a winner when it comes to food because Pinot Noir is perhaps the most versatile, with a huge spectrum of pairings that can be second to none. For your summery menu of alfresco dining classics such as quiche or roast chicken with summer vegetables, there’s a good reason why Pinot Noir is often the best choice. With just the right balance of freshness and flavour, Alsace Pinot Noir such as Charles Frey Organic Pinot Noir, ‘Harmonie’, Alsace, France, £22.99, has all the hallmark characteristics of the terroir, think lighter in style than red Burgundy with more pronounced cherry flavours.

If there’s anything left of your barbecue when it gets to the evening, try this one with something meaty and end your summer’s day in the most flavourful of ways!
