There’s something rather magical about autumn here. The air sharpens, the colours deepen, and everywhere you turn there’s inspiration to be found, which feels perfectly in step with the stories we’ve gathered for you in this issue.

We dive straight into the flavours of the season with Claire Syrenne, who is stirring things up ahead of the much-anticipated Festival of Food and Drink, bringing bold flavours, warmth, and a generous helping of heart to Thoresby Park.

Outdoors, autumn is putting on quite the show. At Clumber Park, one of Nottinghamshire’s most cherished landscapes is transforming into a spectacle of colour, as Johanna Mather of the National Trust Nottinghamshire invites us to slow down and take it all in. And if a gentle wander is more your pace, travel writer and photojournalist Sally Outram guides us through the quiet lanes and ancient landscapes of Normanton-on-Trent and Grassthorpe, where history lingers and the scenery speaks for itself.

Closer to the city, creativity takes centre stage at Nottingham Playhouse. The local roundup Finding The Extraordinary In The Ordinary Heritage Open Days celebrates England's Everyday Histories. The country’s largest festival of history and culture runs 11-20 Sep 26. Discover Heritage Open Days across Nottinghamshire.

Heritage Open Days returns this September with thousands of free events and experiences taking place across England. Each year, millions of people take part in a nationwide celebration of their heritage, community and history. The festival is brought to you by the National Trust and supported

by Postcode Lottery players, with an exciting programme of events delivered locally by thousands of organisations and volunteers.

It’s all about doorstep discovery – whether you’re stepping into a cold war bunker or a crematorium, a museum or a mandir, a lido or a lighthouse, a canal boat or a colliery, a signal box or a submarine.

The festival offers thousands of free, community-led events all over England, with endless opportunity for discovering something new. From working lives to cherished rituals, many events will focus in on this year’s festival theme, ‘Everyday Histories’ presented by leading family history website Findmypast.

Organisers are invited to explore the varied and often overlooked stories of ordinary working people and their daily lives. From factory floors, workhouses and high streets to kitchens, schools, and community centres, this theme shines a light on working-class voices, local superheroes and the part-of-

the-furniture places that have quietly shaped England’s heritage.

Liam Montgomery, Heritage Open Days Marketing & Projects Manager, said, “There are so many brilliant stories that are celebrated through the festival each year, but this year I can’t wait to see all those everyday hidden-in-plain-sight stories centre stage in our programming through the ‘Everyday Histories’ theme.

I’m so excited to see our community uncover new stories and delve deeper than ever before” Beyond our theme, the 2026 festival will feature a wide range of places that normally charge for events outside of the festival, along with free sites offering something extra special and many venues that are not usually open to the public.

Founded in 1994, Heritage Open Days has been making history and culture more accessible for more than 30 years.

Last year over 2,500 organisers and 44,200 volunteers ran 5,879 events across the country, attracting over one million visits. Around one-quarter of visitors had not visited a heritage site/ event in the past year while 83% of festival-goers said their visit made them more proud of their local area.

Game on as approval granted for 56,000 sqft international padel centre in Nottingham.

A new events volunteering website has launched, offering a new way for residents to discover how they can volunteer and play a vital role in the region’s major events.

Nottingham is set for a major sporting boost after plans for a new international-standard padel destination have been approved.

From cultural festivals to major sporting occasions, Nottinghamshire hosts a diverse calendar of events each year, many of which rely on the dedication of volunteers to make them a success. The new site nottslocallegends.co.uk makes it easier than ever to get involved.

Padel House, a development being curated by Carltonbased ALB Group, will feature competition-standard courts capable of hosting major tournaments alongside a range of wellness, hospitality and business facilities.

Volunteering at events is a great way to give back to the community, develop valuable skills, and meet new people, all while being part of Nottingham’s vibrant cultural scene. Popular annual events such as Notts Pride, the Lexus Nottingham Open, and Nottingham Light Night depend on the energy and commitment of volunteers to bring them to life.

Located on Electric Avenue, the new centre will include five indoor padel courts, an indoor show court, four covered outdoor courts and a dedicated pickleball court. The venue will have the capacity to host major national and international tournaments.

The new online hub showcases current volunteering opportunities, helping people discover how they can take part. Users can also sign up to a monthly newsletter to stay informed about upcoming roles and events.

Alongside the courts, Padel House will feature a Pilates studio, PT studio, physiotherapy facilities, coworking space, offices, a lounge, bar, roof terrace, events plaza and food outlets brought to life by the creative force behind Public and Arran’s Bagel.

Nottingham-based Leonard Design has worked alongside ALB Group to bring the project to life. Construction is expected to begin following the completion of predevelopment works, with Padel House set to become one of the UK's most ambitious padel destinations.

Volunteer at events and become a Notts Local Legend.

The initiative aims to strengthen Nottingham’s and the East Midlands’ thriving volunteer network, and support future bids to host major international events, such as the 2028 Archery World Championships and Nottingham’s bid to be a candidate host city for the 2035 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The project is part of a wider partnership between Nottingham City Council, Nottingham Community and Voluntary Service (NCVS) and the University of Nottingham. The programme has received £40,000 from East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) from funding provided by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), with the goal of engaging local communities and helping people learn new skills and gain valuable experience.

Councillor David Mellen, Executive Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism at Nottingham City Council, said: “We’re proud that Nottingham has such a diverse and vibrant annual events

programme, and we want to give ourselves the best possible chance of securing major event opportunities in the future. Large-scale global events, particularly in sport, depend on a strong and committed volunteer base.

“We’re encouraging residents to become a ‘Notts Local Legend’ by signing up to volunteer at events across the city. It’s a fantastic opportunity to build skills, meet new people, and support causes that matter. By volunteering your time, you can help create inclusive and memorable experiences for residents and visitors alike, contributing to a stronger, more connected Nottingham.”

Laura Armitage, CEO at Nottingham Community and Voluntary Service, said: “Notts Local Legends will make it easier for people get involved in event volunteering around the city and county. We hope that those who take part will discover the lasting sense of purpose, satisfaction and community that volunteering brings, and be inspired to explore the many ongoing opportunities available throughout Nottingham’s fantastic volunteer-involving organisations.”

Her collection — once purely her own — continues to expand, but always with the same ethos: art is meant to be shared, experienced and loved. That authenticity remains at the very heart of Limited 2 Art. Now firmly established in its self-owned home on Bridgegate, Retford, the gallery has truly come into its own. Spread across two floors, the space invites exploration, with each room offering something different and visitors encouraged to wander, pause and discover at their own pace.

Original works of art are at the heart of the collection, with an eclectic range of styles encompassing contemporary and abstract art, landscapes, figurative pieces, wildlife and more traditional works. Ruth carefully sources artwork from both established and emerging artists, resulting in a constantly evolving collection with an emphasis on quality, individuality and, above all, work that creates an emotional connection.

Alongside the originals is an extensive collection of soughtafter limited editions, sculpture, ceramics and exceptional art glass. Particularly striking are the imaginative, characterful creations of Borowski Glass and the beautifully crafted Scandinavian glass of Målerås, each individually selected to complement the gallery’s diverse collection. Visitors will also discover the instantly recognisable Edge Sculpture range and beautifully hand-painted De Rosa Ceramics.

Since relocating, the gallery has continued to flourish, not least thanks to the unforgettable “Human Chain” event in 2024, when members of the community came together to help move artworks into their new home. The occasion was so extraordinary that it attracted local television news coverage from both the BBC and ITV, capturing a wonderful moment when the people of Retford quite literally helped move the gallery into its next chapter. It was a perfect reflection of what Limited 2 Art represents: not simply a business, but a place rooted in people, connection and a shared enthusiasm for art.

Today, Limited 2 Art has firmly established itself as a destination gallery. With one of the largest spaces of its kind, it attracts visitors from further and further afield while retaining the loyal local following that has supported Ruth from the very beginning. Even customers who first discovered the gallery during its 16 years in Bawtry now make the journey to Retford, often bringing new visitors with them and introducing more people to the town.

Great Central Railway

17 - 20 Sep Real Ale, Cider & Gin Festival

Entry to the festival is free, with visitors able to explore the railway’s stations and enjoy the bars, drinks and live entertainment. Tickets are required for those wishing to travel on the heritage trains, which will run between stations throughout the festival, offering the chance to combine a journey on the railway with a selection of unique guest beers and drinks along the way.

The festival gets underway at midday on Thursday at Loughborough, with diesel trains running and draught ales and snacks available to get the weekend started. The Loughborough station bar will be open from 12 noon. Friday and Saturday will see more than 85 beers, 30 ciders and spirits available across the line, alongside a packed programme of live music from talented local performers and a variety of food stalls.

Steam and diesel trains will run throughout both days, and late into the night, with visitors able to hop on and off the trains as they explore the festival along the line.

Vision For Nottingham Citizen-led vision for Nottingham steps up to the climate challenge.

A blueprint for a green, healthy city created by the people of Nottingham has been unveiled.

It’s the product of more than two years of citizen-led work including mini assemblies and a youth assembly to come up with a roadmap for a greener, fairer city that brings local voices right into the heart of city climate decisions.

Nottingham has one of the most ambitious climate targets in the UK, but hitting CN28 means bringing the whole city along. The Nottingham Environment & Climate Assembly manifesto sets out a vision of a forest city with clean air and waterways; placing nature and residents at the heart of decision-making; with community led initiatives to create thriving neighbourhoods and more safe ways to get around the city by foot, bike and public transport.

The collective approach of a citizens’ assembly is seen as a way to empower communities and combat the increasing distrust in traditional politics to find a new positive way forward. From Ireland to Camden, citizens' assemblies have shown time and again that people-power can drive extraordinary change.

The manifesto includes a series of recommendations around buildings and energy, food and health, nature, skills and engagement, transport, waste and water. Specific ideas include retrofitting buildings; community gardens; local food production; a pedestrian

friendly transport system; wildlife corridors: repair and recycle schemes; incentives for green businesses and managing flood risks through rain gardens.

It also calls for more green space in the city to make it accessible within a 15 minute walk for every resident and a network of green hubs in each neighbourhood with local food markets, skills workshops, and youth activities.

At the launch event in July, the city’s decision makers heard what Nottingham people want for the future of their city with a call for a task force to ensure the ideas are brought into reality.

Councillor Sam Lux, Executive Member for Environment and Sustainability, Nottingham City Council, said: "It has never been more apparent that we are living in the midst of a climate crisis. Now is our last chance to act.

If we don’t do so in accordance with the will of Nottingham people we aren’t going to succeed.

“That’s why this climate assembly manifesto is nothing less than critical and I will be determined to translate as much of it into immediate policy as practically possible.”

Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance

Record-Breaking Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance July was a record-breaking month for Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance (LNAA), with crews dispatched to 237 missions throughout the month, an average of 7.6 lifesaving missions every day!

Compared with the same month in 2025, this represents an increase of 88%, highlighting the growing demand for LNAA’s specialist criticalcare service across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.

Covering over 3,500 square miles across the two counties, LNAA brings hospitallevel treatment directly to patients at the scene of serious incidents, including road traffic collisions, cardiac arrests, falls, industrial accidents and assaults.

The figures underline the continued importance of LNAA’s plans to expand its service, including fundraising for a second helicopter and the recent expansion of its Nottinghamshire

Critical Care Car to a 24/7 service, enabling specialist clinicians to reach more patients with lifesaving treatment around the clock.

Stuart Elms, Chief Operating Officer said, “July has been the busiest month in the history of Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance, reflecting unprecedented demand for our lifesaving critical-care service across the region.

We are thankful to our colleagues in EMAS, as well as the police and the Fire Rescue Teams across the counties, for the professional teamwork that enables us to deliver the care we do. These record-breaking figures are a stark reminder that emergencies can happen

to anyone at any time, and they highlight how vital our critical-care teams are to the communities we serve.

LNAA is charity funded and receives no direct government funding for its daily missions. The charity relies on the generous support of people, businesses and communities across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire to keep its crews ready to respond 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The Harley Open 19 Sep - 3 Jan 27 Harley Gallery Welbeck Estate, Worksop. S80 3LW

The Harley Open exhibition returns for 2026, with contemporary art and endangered heritage crafts.

The Harley Open 2026 features 138 artworks by artists, makers and heritage craft practitioners from across the region. The exhibition will be on show at the Harley Gallery on the historic Welbeck Estate.

This year's exhibition celebrates the breadth of creativity found within 100 miles of the gallery.

For the first time, the Harley Open actively encouraged applications from heritage craft practitioners and welcomed submissions of freestanding work, resulting in the most diverse exhibition in the event's history.

Alongside contemporary artworks including painting, photography and sculpture, visitors will discover works created using heritage craft skills, including more than 15 craft skills currently considered endangered or critically endangered in the UK. More than 700 entries were submitted to the open competition. The final selection of 138 artworks was chosen by a panel comprising Bryony Bond, Director of the Harley Foundation; art historian, broadcaster and author James Fox; and Joe Hill, Director and CEO of Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

The judges' work is not yet complete. They will select the recipient of the The Judges’ Prize of £3,000 sponsored by the Harley Foundation, which will be announced at the exhibition opening. Visitors will also be invited to vote for their favourite artwork, with the winner receiving the People's Prize of

£1,000 sponsored by Welbeck Estates Company.

A further prize is sponsored by Welbeck Abbey Brewery. The winning artwork will appear on a limited-edition beer label sold exclusively in the Welbeck Farm Shop, and the artist will receive a case of the beer (12 × 500ml bottles).

Bryony Bond, Director of the Harley Foundation, said: “It was a delight and a challenge to select artworks for this year’s Harley Open. With such a diversity of works, the exhibition will showcase some of the fantastic artists, makers and craftspeople we have in this region and the breadth and range of skills and creativity.”

The judging panel included art historian, broadcaster and bestselling author James Fox, whose recent book Craftland: In Search of Lost Arts and Disappearing Trades explores Britain's disappearing craft traditions and the makers keeping them alive.

Many of the works in the Harley Open exhibition are for sale, providing an excellent opportunity to buy original art and support local artists and craftspeople. Finance options are available with Own Art on artworks £250–£5,000.

Bassetlaw Museum has been working with the Oasis Centre in Worksop on a new exhibition celebrating the rich mining heritage of the area.

Black Dust, Bright Stories will shine a light on the area’s proud industrial past through an object’s exhibition, an art exhibition and a book of mining recollections. The project brings together personal memories, creative responses, and historic material to remember and celebrate the people, places and stories that helped shape Bassetlaw.

The art exhibition features a collection of images inspired

by mining, including striking oil paintings, portraits and work created by Oasis service users printing with materials found around Langold Lake.

The exhibition offers visitors the opportunity to reflect on the communities, landscapes and industries connected to mining, and to celebrate the lasting contribution of local people to the area’s identity.

Stories Of Bassetlaw: Original Works By Christy Burdock Exhibition until Oct 26

An exhibition of drawings and paintings created in response to the museum’s collection.

This exhibition reflects a wide range of the museum’s themes: from the local cinemas and mining, to royal charters and the story of the Mayflower. Living in Central London, within walking distance of the Thames, she is drawn not to the capital’s well-trodden landmarks but to the quieter, richer stories found beyond it – places with depth and texture that reward close attention.

More about us: Grade II* listed Bromley House was built in 1752 for George Smith, grandson of the founder of Smith’s Bank, the oldest known provincial bank in the country. It has been home to a subscription library since 1821, when Nottingham Subscription

Library outgrew its initial home on Carlton Street. The main part of the library is housed in a series of reading rooms with plaster ceilings, cornices and overmantels. A particularly fine spiral staircase and gallery is a feature of the largest room.

Membership of the library was originally gained through the purchase of a share which covered the whole household, with memberships capped at 265. As well as literature, the library gained a reputation for its collections relating to history and science, including being the initial home of Nottingham’s Natural History Society, the site of Nottingham’s meridian line (which still survives to this day) and the home of the first photographic studio in the Midlands in 1841. Mathematician and physicist, George Green, was among the early members.

We obtained charitable status in 1998 and the cap on membership was lifted, opening membership to all adults on payment of an annual subscription. Access for school-aged children is included in all memberships, and our membership has more than tripled since we became a charity.

Claire Syrenne brings heart, honesty and seriously good food to the Festival of Food and Drink.

“I

’m a cook, writer, mum and human-on-the-mend,” says Claire Syrenne. It’s a description that neatly captures her warmth and honesty. Balancing a creative life of cooking and storytelling, she champions everyday home cooking while continuing to write for clients around the world. Her journey with food is a very personal one, that recently lead her all the way to becoming a finalist and runner-up on MasterChef UK 2025.

Now enjoying what she describes as a “new lease of life”, Claire divides her time between writing and cooking, sharing recipes that make family life that little bit easier. As she prepares to appear at the Festival Of Food and Drink this September, we caught up with her to talk inspiration, confidence and the joy of simple food.

For readers discovering you for the first time, how would you describe your style in the kitchen?

I’m like a virtual kitchen cheerleader! I’m all about supporting the well-being and confidence of home cooks rather than telling them what to cook. My podcast is me cheering on the extraordinary efforts of home cooks whilst sharing ways to make cooking and calm easier in the kitchen. I believe people learn more when they’re less stressed so I champion simple meals and zero food snobbery so that cooks gain confidence in realistic meals.

You’ve built a reputation for making food feel approachable and enjoyable, what first inspired your love of cooking?

I found joy in feeding my family when I was 11. I made a cheese pie in home economics, took it home and the whole thing was demolished. The feeling of creating something to share with people you love and that brings them happiness has never left me. I love feeding my friends and family because it means time around the table together where we laugh, tell stories and support one another.

Your journey with food has evolved over time, how would you describe your relationship with cooking today?

It’s such a good question because I think lots of people experience different relationships with cooking and food over time. Many cooks with young families lose their cooking joy and it takes support to get it back, but we don’t talk about it often enough. I am in a really great place with cooking again and as my podcast grows I’m growing with my audience and it inspires me to create recipes that help them grow their kitchen confidence.

You’re a strong advocate for the home cook, do you think everyday cooking deserves more recognition?

Absolutely! I think recognition is a crucial part of feeling more confident in the kitchen. The home cook works incredibly hard and is so often taken for granted by their own families and by society at large. Being taken for granted never inspires confidence and I’m trying to change that. Home cooks are the very backbone of survival and yet there are no Michelin awards for the heroic efforts of home cooks so I’d like to see more nationwide acknowledgement of the home cook.

The Festival of Food and Drink

Writing and cooking both play a big role in your life, do they influence each other creatively?

What a beautiful question, and yes, for me food is stories. Food intertwines so many human experiences from celebrations and traditions to sorrow and comfort, food plays a part in carrying us through life. Our stories are told through food. I love food history so I deliberately choose ingredients that share a common ancestry or dishes that carry history relevant to our life. I’ve had an idea at the back of my mind for a long time that would be a novel built around recipes, wouldn’t that be fun!

What’s one simple tip you always share to help boost confidence in the kitchen?

The first thing I ever say to someone is that getting dinner on the table is the goal, not how complex the recipe is, or how long it takes to make, or how expensive the ingredients are or how much effort it requires. If you got dinner on the table, you achieved the goal. There’s so much pressure to be a brilliant cook that we forget being an OK cook who gets dinner on the table is perfectly good. Simple meals, made by a happy cook taste the best.

Your time on MasterChef was such a milestone, what did that experience teach you about yourself?

It reminded me just how much I can achieve, manage and enjoy. There I was in my 40s having a completely unexpected adventure and instead of worrying about whether I could win or whether I would look ridiculous on TV, I could just enjoy the experience exactly as it was. I soaked up every challenge, every location, every moment with my fellow contestants and loved it all. I think I could handle the pressure because home cooks are constantly under pressure and we have to improvise a lot.

It was realising the similarities between the home cook and professional kitchens that led me to create Cook and Nourish.

Living and working in Nottinghamshire, do you have a favourite local spot to eat or unwind?

The Crown and Anchor in Welby makes incredible food. Their burgers are an event that you need to get your mouth round!

They are always so busy so it’s worth booking a table. The Old Vol in Lowdham is wonderful for a special evening and Hickory’s in Gamston is a brilliant smokehouse experience.

Is there one moment from your MasterChef journey that has really stayed with you?

Serving Heston Blumenthal my bonkers seafood creation dressed up as an ice cream sundae was a surreal moment.

Heston is widely considered one of the best chefs in the world and for a brief moment it was just him, me and a salmon mousse with a paper umbrella in it. Strip away all his accolades and Heston quite simply loves the joy of food and I gave him a moment of joy with my food. That will stay with me forever.

You’ll be appearing at the Festival of Food and Drink this September, what can visitors expect from your demonstration?

I’ll be harvesting the last of my vegetables from the garden in September and they will be the heart of my savoury dish. I always try to choose a recipe that you can make for your family but it beautiful enough to share with friends. There will also be a quick mid-week dessert in there because life is all about balance. Wherever possible I try to make desserts that use up leftover fruits, breads and dairy so that nothing goes to waste.

Do you plan your demos carefully, or do you like to leave room for a little spontaneity?

I’m definitely a planner so I like to know my recipe well before demonstrating it, but if doing food shows has taught me anything, it’s that you must be prepared for things to go wrong and be able to improvise!

September is a brilliant time for seasonal produce— anything you’re especially excited to showcase at Thoresby Park?

September is the beginning of pumpkin season and after more than a decade of living in Canada I have a lot of pumpkin recipes. It’s used so much more in North American than in the UK so I’ll be bringing a little Canadian pumpkin seasoning to Nottinghamshire.

Food festivals are as much about people as they are about food—what do you enjoy most about meeting visitors?

I absolutely love meeting people at food festivals because we all have a shared interest. It’s like a big cooking and eating club where you get together and get excited about food! I’m always delighted to meet people who listen to my podcast because we end up having really lovely conversations about how special the home cook is.

And finally, a fun one—what’s your go-to “cheat” dish when you want something quick, comforting and delicious?

Bagels are my go-to comfort when I need something quick!

Cream cheese mixed with some stilton, honey and chopped walnuts spread onto a warm bagel, topped with rocket, balsamic and maybe a slice or two of prosciutto, is my happy place! It takes less than 10 minutes and it’s often dinner at our house.

Rosemary Firth – Recent Work 5 Sep - 31 Oct Cath Ray Gallery & Studios.

Doncaster Artist, Rosemary Firth will be showing her most recent work at the gallery in Retford this September.

The exhibition will include her mixedmedia collages and collographic prints, which are influenced by the landscapes she has visited and the colours of our changing seasons.

Rosemary's work has been exhibited all around the country and she was selected to appear on the Sky Arts programme 'Landscape Artist of the Year' in 2020. Rosemary was one of the Pod Artists (Series 6, Episode 2) and her collage of the lake and music temple took her through to the final three selected artists. Working out of doors highlighted the difficulty of producing collages, but it is a medium that Rosemary loves. Of her distinctive and painstakinglyproduced collages she says: “I always begin by taking many photos in places that inspire me…

I initially work on several large pieces of paper, creating expressive marks and colours using a variety of media and techniques in response to the photographs. More recently, I also produce collographs and monoprints at this stage.

After studying for a Fine Art degree in Hull, Rosemary became an art teacher in secondary schools for 16 years before leaving and establishing her own gallery. At her premises in Doncaster, she ran regular exhibitions and classes in drawing, painting and textiles. Since retiring, Rosemary now concentrates on her own artwork, but still occasionally teaches and runs workshops.

Rosemary will be sharing her skills and knowledge in two workshops at the gallery during the exhibition.

One will be on Rosemary's beloved 'Collage' techniques and then a full day spent making a collographic plate from card, paper and other materials to produce a surface that can be inked-up and from which several prints will be produced in the afternoon session. Rosemary's exhibition continues until Saturday October 31st.

“I draw out the main outline of the composition and select suitable areas from all the preliminary papers I've created. I cut or tear the pieces and glue them down, adding shading or highlights to create depth and solidity.

Speaker: Janine Buckley Archaeologist Janine Buckley will give a history of Nottinghamshire Pit Ponies. Janine has undertaken extensive research into the working lives of pit ponies collecting testaments from former miners. Pit ponies played a huge role in coal mining from the mid 18th century to the late 20th century.

Horses and ponies were employed in early open mines and then to sink shafts. Later most worked underground for 50 weeks of the year. They were stabled underground too, only enjoying a 2 week holiday above ground. This is sure to be a fascinating talk about an important former local industry.

7 Oct A Brief History Of Western Bookbinding

Speaker: Caroline Bendix This lecture looks at western bookbinding, during the age of the printed book. Aspects of the book trade, including bookbinding practices and materials used in bindings and, as structure and decoration changed as the centuries passed, the individual binders’ fingers tell their own tale as the craft developed. The bookbinding trade has long recycled waste materials, some of which may be more valuable than the books themselves. More Than A Beautiful Walk Every autumn, Clumber Park puts on one of Nottinghamshire’s greatest natural spectacles. By Johanna Mather, National Trust Nottinghamshire.

T

he park’s iconic trees transform into a rich tapestry of gold, copper and amber, woodland paths become carpeted with crisp leaves, and the lake reflects colours that seem almost too perfect to be real. It’s the season when photographers delight in capturing Clumber at its most vibrant, families head out for leaf-kicking adventures and thousands of people fall in love with Clumber all over again.

But here’s something many visitors don’t realise. None of this happens by accident.

Clumber Park isn’t simply a place to visit. As part of the National Trust, Europe’s largest conservation charity, it’s one of only 146 Grade I listed parks in Britain, and every tree, habitat and historic view is cared for with extraordinary thought and planning.

Looking after 3,800 acres while welcoming well over 700,000 visitors each year is no small task.

Behind the scenes, just eight Rangers, supported by more than 70 volunteers, spend every season protecting wildlife, restoring landscapes and making decisions that won’t just benefit today’s visitors, but people who may walk these paths 100 or even 300 years from now.

Sometimes conservation looks exactly as you’d expect.

You might spot Rangers planting trees, restoring heathland or carefully managing grazing animals that naturally shape the landscape. Other times, conservation can look rather surprising.

Visitors occasionally ask why healthy-looking trees are being felled. In reality, selective tree removal is often one of the best ways to care for a woodland. Thinning allows more light to reach the woodland floor, giving young native trees room to grow, encouraging bluebells and woodland flowers to return, and creating stronger, healthier forests for the future.

Dead trees also have an important role to play. Standing deadwood provides valuable homes for birds, insects and fungi, while fallen timber recycles nutrients back into the soil, supporting countless species that depend upon it.

Elsewhere in the park, Rangers are carefully restoring historic views first created by the Dukes of Newcastle centuries ago. By opening carefully planned sightlines through the woodland, visitors can once again experience Clumber as it was originally designed, with sweeping vistas across the lake, parkland and woodland that had slowly disappeared beneath decades of natural growth.

Perhaps nowhere demonstrates the balance between history and conservation better than Lime Tree Avenue. Planted in 1838, the avenue stretches for three miles and contains 1,296 trees, making it the longest double avenue of lime trees in Europe. Years of parking alongside the avenue compacted the soil around the roots, leaving many of the historic trees vulnerable to disease. By introducing simple measures such as wooden boundary posts and encouraging visitors to use designated parking areas, we’re helping to protect one of Clumber’s most iconic features for generations to come.

Conservation isn’t only about landscapes, though. It’s also about the extraordinary wildlife that calls Clumber home.

Our heathland, now rarer than rainforest in the UK, supports an astonishing variety of species. In fact, Clumber is currently the only known place in Britain where the critically endangered Diamond-backed Spider survives. Thought extinct for more than 50 years before being rediscovered here in 2017, this tiny seven-millimetre spider is now at the centre of nationally important research helping secure its future.

Even the fungi that appear each autumn have an important job. More than 800 species grow across the park, quietly recycling nutrients, enriching the soil and helping trees

absorb water and minerals through their roots. So, the next time you visit Clumber this autumn, take a moment to look beyond the colours.

Every veteran oak, every open view, every patch of heathland and every carpet of fungi tells a story of careful conservation.

It’s a reminder that places like Clumber don’t simply stay beautiful on their own - they are protected, restored and nurtured every single day.

By staying on paths, keeping dogs under control, parking in designated areas and leaving fungi undisturbed to do their vital work, every visitor becomes part of that story too.

Every path, every restored view, every protected habitat and every carefully considered change has one purpose: to ensure Clumber Park remains a place where both nature and people can thrive together.

athryn speaks about Nottingham Playhouse with a kind of luminous conviction that makes you believe in the future of British theatre. “We want to be a theatre of the people,” she says, her voice warm but resolute.

“A place where everyone feels welcome, represented, and able to take part.” And as we discover in our conversation, this advocacy of inclusivity and creative development forms the heartbeat of every programme, every production, every outreach initiative. Nottingham Playhouse’s work is not simply about staging shows; it is about cultivating belonging. It is also very much a producing theatre, differing from many other regional theatres who largely receive productions, with it impressively producing seven to ten shows every year.

That sense of belonging begins with the artists. The East Midlands has long been a cradle of exceptional talent — Jane Upton, William Ivory, Beth Steel, James Graham — writers whose work pulses with regional identity and national relevance. Nottingham Playhouse has championed them not as occasional local gems, but as central voices in the British cultural landscape, providing them with unwavering support, which is repaid when they maintain their ties with the theatre team long after they have reached the national stage. We see this with the premiere of Till the Stars Come Down by Beth Steel in the Autumn. Kathryn describes the region as “bursting with extraordinary artists,” and Nottingham Playhouse’s innovative Amplify programme, run by Artist Development Producer Beccy D'Souza, is proof of that belief in action.

Recent seasons have showcased Ty’rone Haughton’s ‘explosive and visceral’ Made You Look, brand new writing from Grace Carter, every God has its day, and extracts from two shows heading to the Edinburgh Festival, Brick by Noah Xavier and A Foot is Not a Suitable Prize for the Tombola by Dan McVey. These works aren’t just seen as stage pilots, rather they are celebrated as part of Nottingham Playhouse’s artistic fabric, proudly presented to audiences who recognise their authenticity and who return time and time again to support the Amplify Seasons, and its quarterly performances.

This commitment to local storytelling has produced remarkable moments, none more striking than James Graham’s Punch.

Set in Nottingham, rooted in its political and cultural heartbeat, Punch became the highest grossing play in the theatre’s history and even found itself raised in Parliament. It was a national phenomenon born from a local tragedy, a reminder that authenticity resonates far beyond geographical borders.

Kathryn reflects on its success with a smile: “It showed that when you tell a story truthfully, people everywhere connect, and we knew that the underlying currents in the narrative and the emotive power of Punch would translate on any stage anywhere, so we are thrilled at its success.”

“It’s important to note here, too”, Kathryn adds, “that this is a tremendous example of why our team, headed up by Adam Penford, our acclaimed Artistic Director, excels in this type of production. Punch tells the true-life story of Jacob Dunne, who on a night out in Nottingham, throws an impulsive punch, leading to fatal consequences. Searching for answers, Joan and David, the parents of his victim James - ask to meet, sparking a profound transformation in Jacob's life. We worked closely alongside Joan and David, making sure they were comfortable with how characters were being portrayed and the emotional truth of the story.

“We want to tell local stories, we are extremely good at spotting them and bringing them to the stage, but this is because we can translate which stories are most likely to resonate with audience members or bring their emotions alive, and we show care, sensitivity and diligence in working with real people to cover these incredible life experiences.

We saw this more recently in our July showing of The Market Deeping Railway Club and all its authenticity, raw emotion, and powerful community narrative.”

Nottingham Playhouse’s programming very much reflects the diversity of stories and events and the richness of the local area, with it being intentionally varied, inclusive and socially conscious. Productions such as the recent Small Island have illuminated the Windrush story with compassion and urgency, inviting audiences not only to witness history but to feel its reverberations in the present.

This commitment to community is also powerfully embodied in Nottingham Playhouse’s status as a Theatre of Sanctuary.

For refugees, asylum seekers and people seeking safety, cultural spaces can feel intimidating or inaccessible.

Nottingham Playhouse has worked deliberately to change that. Through creative workshops, language friendly activities, partnerships with local support groups and staff training, it has built an environment where marginalised communities feel not only welcome but genuinely involved.

Kathryn speaks about this work with deep sincerity: “It’s not just about opening the doors. It’s about making sure people feel safe walking through them, and a part of something.”

Adam Penford, noted: “What’s unique about Nottingham Playhouse is that we create theatre that is bold, sometimes challenging, and is proudly made in Nottingham by our talented staff and craftspeople. We work alongside our local community to make sure everyone feels that they belong in our building, be that artists or young people or refugees, and that they see themselves reflected on stage and in our work.”

Accessibility is woven into the theatre’s fabric. Nottingham Playhouse has invested heavily in making its spaces and performances genuinely inclusive; from relaxed performances and captioned shows, for example, to audio description, BSL interpreted, touch tours and dementia friendly performances.

The building itself has been thoughtfully adapted to ensure that audiences with mobility needs can navigate it with ease. Kathryn emphasises that accessibility is not an add on but a core value: “Everyone deserves to experience theatre in a way that feels comfortable and empowering.” This commitment extends beyond the auditorium, shaping workshops, community events and youth programmes so that they are open to all, regardless of ability or background. “In fact,” Kathryn adds “23% of our staff identify as disabled or deaf. People can see themselves reflected in our staff and on-stage, and that matters.”

Sustainability is another pillar of Nottingham Playhouse’s identity. In an era where cultural organisations must reckon with their environmental impact, it has taken meaningful steps to reduce waste, lower emissions and embed greener practices across its operations. “We’ve recently invested in a 31,140 square foot workshop, which is hugely significant”, Kathryn points out. “At a time when others in the industry are pulling back due to the ever mounting costs and financial challenges the industry is facing, we are taking a bolder stance, call it a calculated risk, so we can achieve our sustainability goals, and increase not only our green credentials but hopefully be creative in finding revenue streams.” The new workshop will not only provide more space to make sets and store materials, but it will give Nottingham Playhouse space to now store its old sets, so they can be repurposed for new shows, or offered out on loan. There will also be new space for other productions and theatre groups to store their materials here.

We can see that Nottingham Playhouse is approaching every aspect of its operations in the same bold, inclusive, socially and environmentally conscious way it does with its productions. Amidst the cost of living crisis and rocketing resources, the team are committed to ensuring that the programme of events and community pledges remain unaffected, making strategic decisions and opening up revenue streams creatively to ensure they can keep offering their free services and ticket prices remain accessible.

As autumn approaches, Nottingham Playhouse prepares for one of its most exciting seasons yet. In September, it will host the regional premiere of Beth Steel’s Olivier nominated West End hit Till the Stars Come Down. Securing such a major production for its first run outside London is no small feat, but for here, it feels beautifully fitting. Steel is an East Midlands writer, and her work, beautifully enriched with working class identity, family dynamics and social truth resonates deeply with local audiences.

As we talk with Kathryn, we can see that for all its accolades, Nottingham Playhouse remains disarmingly accessible. You do not need theatre experience, training or insider knowledge to get involved. You simply need curiosity and an open mind.

events, youth programmes, such as the highly successful Shine series, community groups, creative workshops, open auditions, volunteering opportunities, and even backstage tours, and the programme of activities is hugely popular.

“We work with schools and also independently, reaching out to communities that may not otherwise have access to the power and personal positives that theatre can bring”, explain Kathryn with a smile. “It’s wonderful to see young people growing in confidence, learning to express themselves, finding identity, all through the work we are doing.”

And the wider, and older community benefit, too; Nottingham Playhouse offers drama groups for adults who have never acted before, movement workshops, and intergenerational projects that bring families together through shared creativity. Local people can join choirs, participate in community productions, explore writing, or simply attend social gatherings that celebrate the joy of being part of something bigger. These groups are not about producing polished performances; they are about building confidence, connection and community spirit. Very much returning that beautiful heartbeat of Nottingham Playhouse; giving people a place to belong.

And for emerging artists, the message is clear: “Whether you’ve been coming for years, or you have never stepped inside a theatre before, there is a place here for you. You can find out more about our Amplify membership, which is completely free, and discover a host of exciting opportunities and incentives. It’s worth having a look and seeing how you can become involved.”

We ask Kathryn, as we approach the end of our chat, what for her is so special about the Nottingham Playhouse environment. Her response is beaming “Well, I’d never worked in theatre before, but it’s always been a lifetime passion. I’d say it’s unique because of the people. We are blessed to have hugely talented people who spot ideas and bring them to life, and it’s a very forward-driven, positive approach from the top down which gives us the belief we can tackle anything. Oh, and I love the building and its architecture!”

ith sweeping views across the Nottinghamshire countryside, Rachel and Josh's summer festival wedding at Welbeck Estate was everything an outdoor celebration should be – relaxed, joyful and full of personality.

Set against a backdrop of rolling fields and a lake, their outdoor tipi set up from Sami Tipi created the perfect setting for a day focused on bringing family and friends together. Guests gathered on hay bales for a beautifully informal ceremony, led by the couple's auntie, making the moment feel even more personal. A handmade ceremony arch, decorated with colourful ribbons and sparkling disco balls, added a fun festival feel, while a combine harvester and tractor stood proudly nearby. Choosing Welbeck Estate as their wedding venue was an easy decision.

As well as being where Rachel works, the location held special significance for Josh and served as a quiet tribute to his late dad.

The couple also chose to marry on the same weekend as his birthday.

Family and friends also played a big part in making the day so special. Drinks flowed from HOPS Mobile Bars' outdoor bar, and a family friend served up a relaxed summer barbecue for guests to enjoy, making the most of the glorious weather. Throughout the afternoon, acoustic guitarist Jayrar provided the perfect soundtrack, adding to the laid-back atmosphere as guests enjoyed good food, drinks and the beautiful countryside setting.

What really made the day memorable were the thoughtful personal touches dotted throughout the celebration. Guests were kept cool with handheld fans, while a DIY crisp wall proved to be an instant hit.

Instead of a traditional guest book, friends and family left messages on a skateboard, creating a unique keepsake the couple will treasure for years to come.

Every guest also received a personalised reusable cup for their drinks and a pair of sunglasses printed with the couple's initials and wedding date – practical favours that quickly became part of the party.

The evening celebrations got off to an unforgettable start with a burst of confetti cannons, setting the tone for an incredible night ahead. A live band soon had the dance floor packed inside the tipis, before guests tucked into freshly made pizzas from the Greendale Oak. Rachel and Josh's wedding perfectly captured the magic of a summer tipi celebration: laid-back, welcoming and completely personal. From meaningful family moments to creative DIY details and spectacular countryside views, every element reflected the couple's personalities, proving that the best weddings are the ones that feel truly authentic.

s the countryside transforms into a tapestry of rich colour and crisp air replaces the heat of summer, the season creates an atmosphere that feels effortlessly romantic, elegant and inviting.

One of autumn's greatest appeals is its natural beauty.

Trees dressed in shades of copper, amber, burgundy and gold provide a spectacular backdrop for wedding ceremonies and photographs alike. The changing landscape requires very little embellishment, allowing nature to become part of the styling. Whether celebrating in a grand country house, a charming barn or an outdoor woodland setting, couples can embrace the season's warmth and character to create a truly memorable occasion.

Autumn also offers wonderful opportunities to introduce texture and depth into every aspect of the ceremony décor.

Events Nature Nurtures Health All too often we talk about the environment and nature as if they are separate from us, but we are all part of nature.

F

or millennia, our lives were shaped by nature. We evolved to survive and then thrive in our natural environment. Over time, our ability to impact on the environment we rely on slowly increased. From hunter gatherers leading harsh lives dictated by the availability of animals to hunt, we became farmers – able to grow crops and to rear livestock.

Life became more manageable, but we largely remained in with nature – still guided by the seasons and the rising and setting of the sun.

In more recent history, our ability to harness nature has tipped over into a capacity to control it. Damming and diverting rivers meant water wherever we needed it. As tools switched from stone to metal, we could clear ever more forest to farm - but life was still more or less in tune with mother nature.

With the coming of the industrial revolution and the shift of populations from rural to urban, most people’s connection with the land was severed. Advances such as electric light meant that the old rhythm of day and night could largely be overcome.

The transformation of the way we lived began to advance almost exponentially, yielding huge benefits in terms of advances in technology, food production and medicine. Life expectancy grew and as wealth increased, advances in the concept of ‘leisure time’ took root.

Whilst no one would ever suggest that we need to turn back the clock and cast aside the advances that underpin modern

life, there is plenty of evidence that in some areas we have tipped the balance too far. It is wise then to remind ourselves that we are part of nature.

The death and destruction caused by heatwaves, wildfires and flash floods driven by the global climate and ecological crises, largely triggered by human actions, demonstrate how the health of the planet can impact our everyday lives. It is clear that we need to fix nature and to restore some semblance of balance in the environment. But just as we have the power to fix nature – nature has the power to fix us too.

Our disconnect with nature isn’t just signalled by the damage we have collectively caused to the environment upon which we all rely, it can be seen on a more personal level too.

The world around us shapes everyone’s health and wellbeing.

The natural world can affect how we think and feel.

The state of the neighbourhoods in which we live can directly affect how long people live and their quality of life. After decades where life expectancy routinely increases, the trend is now reversing.

Issues such as air quality, the impacts of climate change, including heatwaves, and our ability to access nature close to home all have a direct impact on our health and wellbeing.

Whilst many issues are the result of long-term medical conditions and life-limiting disabilities, The Wildlife Trusts are committed to delivering a wilder future – where people can lead healthy lives in a healthy natural environment.

Far too many of us live in nature depleted areas, many areas also suffer serious pollution. Over 9 million households, representing around a third of the population of England, don’t have close access to nature friendly places. Children living in affluent areas are nine times more likely to have access to safe natural spaces where they can play. This is both unacceptable and unfair.

With towns and cities roasting in repeated heatwaves, the impact of the environment on our health is at the forefront of our minds. Natural solutions can be the answer here too. Concrete traps and retains heat and contributes to flash flooding, while trees, parks, green spaces and natural features such as ponds provide shade and cooling and help heavy rain replenish soils and groundwater. Having more nature near where we live also means cooler, safer homes. Providing shaded, wildliferich places to sit and relax can also make urban areas more welcoming and help reinvigorate our much-maligned urban centres – as we’ve seen with the Broad Marsh Green Heart in Nottingham.

Beyond the health benefits of reducing heat, time spent in woods and hills makes people calmer, happier and more connected – not just to nature - but to family and friends too.

Children who study in nature have been shown to do better at school. People struggling with poor mental health recover faster when spending time outdoors as part of their treatment.

In addition to NHS savings due to having a healthier, happier and more successful population - such measures will also help underpin the future economy. Surely a wilder future must be a better future.

Quiet Lanes & Ancient Landscapes A gentle village wander through Normanton-on-Trent & Grassthorpe, by travel writer and photojournalist Sally Outram.

T

his peaceful circular walk begins in Normanton-onTrent, a village that still feels wonderfully rooted in its rural past. There’s a quiet charm to the place; red‑brick cottages with warm pantile roofs, old farm buildings that have seen generations of farming life, and long straight lanes that open out into the Trent Valley landscape. It’s the kind of village where you naturally slow your pace, noticing the neat boundaries and the well‑kept verges.

Leaving the heart of the village, the route leads you gently towards St Matthew’s Church, one of Normanton’s most treasured landmarks. Though an early church was established here by the 12th century, the historic building you see today is a beautiful blend of later medieval craftsmanship, featuring a 13th-century north arcade and a prominent 15th-century tower. Before you enter, look out for the heavily altered remains of a 12th-century Norman font bowl which is by the church in the grounds. The churchyard is a beautifully peaceful space with mature trees, soft rises in the ground, and hints of old pathways shaped over centuries. By the churchyard boundary

is Normanton Hall, which dates to around 1820. It’s a lovely moment of stillness before you continue your wander.

Look out for the village hall, which was the old school and was built in 1776 to educate ten deprived children, and the Old Wesleyan Chapel, now a residential property, which was built in 1822.

This wonderful walk takes you along a quiet lane which leads you into Grassthorpe, a tiny hamlet tucked amongst wide fields and open skies and lies roughly 1.5 miles west of the River Trent. The fertile lowlands immediately east of the village are historically known as Grassthorpe Holme, an area surrounded by traditional river meadows that was never divided up by historical Inclosure Acts. In the 12th century, the manors of Grassthorpe and Normanton-on-Trent were bound together under the ownership of the de Lovetot family. By 1596, they officially combined into the single "Manor of Gristhorp (Grassthorpe) and NormantonIn (Normanton). In the 14th century, the land fell into the hands of Michael de la Pole, the Earl of Suffolk and Chancellor to

King Richard II. He was famously stripped of his estates after becoming the first official in English history to be removed from office via impeachment.

The hamlet also once housed an ancient chapel dedicated to St. James. During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the building was declared a ruin and converted into a simple residential cottage and barn.

Although Grassthorpe is little more than a scattering of cottages and farmsteads today, the landscape tells a far richer story. In medieval times, this quiet hamlet was once a small but busy milling hub, shaped by its position in the Trent Valley. Historic records show that Grassthorpe operated a local watermill and, remarkably, three separate windmills. Two of its timber post‑mills were dismantled and moved up the road to Tuxford in 1814 and 1870, while the last remaining three‑storey brick tower mill stood until the upper section was removed in 1934.

As you wander through, you’ll notice subtle medieval earthworks rippling across the surrounding fields; gentle rises and hollows that hint at long‑lost boundaries, yards, and working spaces.

The beck running beside the track adds a soft, watery thread to the landscape, echoing the days when water power drove local industry. The village still retains its historic stone pinfold (a secure pound traditionally used to hold stray livestock). Built into its stone wall is a commemorative plaque marking Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887.

It’s a place that is definitely worth taking your time to explore.

Once you leave the village edges behind, the Trent Valley floodplain opens out around you. This is a landscape shaped by water, weather, and time, with wide fields, long views, and hedgerows that shift beautifully with the seasons. The valley floodplain is one of Britain’s most studied river landscapes, shaped over hundreds of thousands of years. Glaciers carved the valley, depositing sand and gravel terraces that still influence the land today. After the last ice age, rivers spread across the valley floor, gradually settling into the single Trent channel we know today.

In spring, the verges froth with cow parsley and hawthorn blossom, and the hedges burst into fresh green. Summer brings buttercups, wild grasses, and the soft shimmer of seed heads drifting in the breeze. The diagonal field crossing near St Matthew’s is especially lovely in warmer months with pretty wildflowers and old hedgerow oaks standing over the fields. Autumn deepens everything to russet and gold, and winter reveals the bare bones of the floodplain, crisp air, stark silhouettes, and a quiet, open beauty.

This walk is full of small wildlife moments if you take your time.

Skylarks rise in spirals above the fields. Yellowhammers call from the hedges, and in summer, swallows and swifts skim low over the crops. Look up, and you may spot buzzards or red kites circling overhead. Along the quieter paths, you might see hares, bounding across the fields or a pheasant slipping into the hedge.

At dawn and dusk, the landscape becomes a corridor for roe, fallow, and muntjac deer, emerging to feed in the soft light. Their quiet presence adds a gentle wildness to the route.

Your walk ends at The Crown Inn, a welcoming village pub with deep roots in local history. Once known as the Rose & Crown, it served travellers moving through the Trent Valley in the 18th century, later becoming The Crown in the late 1800s. Sitting just 1.5 miles from the old York–London route, it was a useful coaching stop, with horses stabled here until the mid‑19th century. The York–London route was the lifeblood of English travel between the 17th and 19th centuries. By the mid-1700s, stagecoaches consistently took about four days to complete the trip. Because horses needed to be changed roughly every 10 to 15 miles, local inns were absolutely critical to keeping the system running. Highwaymen were a well-documented risk along the isolated stretches of this Nottinghamshire highway.

Because the main road could become heavily congested, waterlogged, or dangerous, travellers, slower carrier wagons, and livestock drovers routinely diverted slightly off the main track into surrounding Trent Valley villages like Normanton-on-Trent to find cheaper stabling, quieter lodging, and safer rest at coaching taverns like The Crown Inn. The arrival of the railways in the 1840s and 1850s decimated the stagecoach industry almost overnight, transitioning places like The Crown from busy transit hubs into traditional village pubs.

Today, it’s still a friendly place to pause, the perfect spot to refuel, relax with a drink, and enjoy the easy charm of village life after your wander.

along South Street and follow the footpath through the village until you reach Brotts Road on your left. Turn left onto Brotts Road and continue a short distance until you see a signposted byway on your left.

Proceed along the byway; you will eventually emerge at the main road where Gracefield Lane meets Eastgate. Turn left onto Eastgate and follow the pavement through the village, crossing over South Street, and continuing ahead to reach the church — a lovely point to pause and explore.

Walk past the front of the church, heading out of the village along Tuxford Road. After a short distance, you’ll see a signposted stile and grassy track to your left in the hedge. Go over the stile and follow the track diagonally across the fields, keeping to the fingerposts and stiles, until you reach a junction of paths.

At the junction, bear right over another stile, then follow a short loop bearing left onto the Weston Lane track. You’ll notice farm buildings ahead to your left as you continue. Keep following the track until you reach South Street once more.

Turn right and follow the signposted grassy lane opposite. Continue along the track, crossing several

After the bridge, turn right, then shortly after loop round to the left; you will see a gate. Go through and follow the track as it crosses a small culvert bridge. You will emerge in Grassthorpe village.

6. Turn left onto the road and walk through the village — Town Lane becomes Town Street. Continue bearing right to reach a junction, then follow the road to the right onto Ingram Lane. Proceed until you reach a metal signpost on the left beside the beck.

7. Continue along the track that runs parallel to the beck; you will eventually reach a gate and waymarker. Follow the waymarked track to reach Holme Lane. Cross over and follow the track beside the woods on your left, keeping to the waymarkers. After a short distance from the woodland boundary, you’ll see a signpost to the left — turn left here and follow the track.

8. You will reach a gate/stile; proceed over and cross a small culvert footbridge. Continue until you reach a wider byway and crossroads. Turn left onto the byway and head towards Brotts Road. At its end, turn right onto Brotts Road, then right again onto South Street, retracing your steps back to the pub.

Why Coaching?

Why Me? What coaching really means in practice— and how it works day to day, creating real, measurable change in work and life.

I

t suddenly dawned on me a few weeks back that I’ve been writing editorials for Made for a number of years now and not really delved into what coaching is and what I actually do with my clients. I’ve banged on about Neuroscience, Positive Psychology and the brains ability to rewire itself and change how it views things, but not really explained how that is used to improve my clients professional and personal performance.

The ICF (International Coaching Federation) define Coaching as “Partnering with clients in a thought provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximise their personal and professional potential.”

The key bits for me here are “thought provoking”, “creative” and “inspiring”, all of which require clients to actively think, and think differently about the situations they currently find themselves in and want to move forward from. Hence, my focus on Psychology, Neuroscience, the brain and how it can be developed and trained to see new possibilities. It drives everything, how we firstly experience life and then how we can chose to respond to it! This is the true power of coaching, you get to make different choices!

The client is always the lead partner and in our first session they decide what it is that they want to work on, why they want to do it, where they want to be in the future and how they will know when they have got there. This is the contract between us and it’s agreed from the outset. From that point on, my role in each session is to ask deep, focused, reflective questions that help clients to expose habits, assumptions, values and beliefs that may be getting in the way of their progress towards the goals they have set.

The clients role is to turn up with a completely open mind, with total honesty and a commitment to exploring as much of their inner selves as possible, in order to better understand what would need to change for them to think and act differently to reach their goals, and then work with me to find new, creative and inspirational ways for them to make those changes happen.

The client must then do the work they agreed outside of our sessions, and I then hold them accountable each time we meet.

Otherwise, it’s just a nice chat with no real progress for either party! We meet for as long as the client wishes to, generally from 4 to 6 one hour sessions is enough to make real progress, however, everyone is different and some take less or more time.

My aim is not to create a dependent relationship, but to build the skills in my clients to be able to navigate all challenges that life may throw at them in future without outside support. That is why I describe myself as a Resilience and Mindset Coach, giving clients the ability to deal with any and all challenges they may come across within Executive, Business, Career or Life Coaching.

The above is a “Pure Coaching” approach, where I do not give any advice to clients, just allow them to come to their own decisions about what is best for them to do to reach their goals. I also do “Mentor Coaching” with some of my Executive, Business and Career clients, by agreement, where I can also use my 35 years of experience as a Senior Operations Manager in Food Manufacturing to signpost ways forwards, give specific examples to try that could possibly support the clients progress and be more collaborative in potential ways forward in reaching their goals.

As for “Why Me”? The beauty of starting a coaching relationship is that you get to have a free one hour “Chemistry Call” with me to make sure we are a good fit and can work well together, before paying anything at all. It’s like a “Try it before you buy it” type set up. I may be fully qualified, experienced and have plenty of success stories under my belt, but that’s no use to you if you’re either not ready for coaching and/or if we just don’t fit each other.

Antipasti Loaf

Loaf Cakes The following recipes are easy to make and slice.

Loaf cakes tend to use less buttercream so they're fractionally better for your waistline! Enjoy with a cup of tea or coffee. Here are a few of my favourites and they all bake in under 45 minutes.

Ingredients 225g plain flour 2 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp black pepper 2 large eggs 225g Greek yoghurt 2 tbsp oil 100g chopped Salami and Parma Ham slices 200g feta cheese, crumbled 30g sliced olives 25g chopped sundried tomatoes

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 170ºC Fan/Gas 4.

2. Sieve the flour, baking powder and pepper into a bowl.

3. Whisk together the eggs, yoghurt and oil in a medium jug, 4. Place the meats, feta, olives and sundried tomatoes into a large bowl.

5. Mix in the egg mixture and then the dried ingredients and once combined transfer into a greased and lined loaf tin.

6. Bake for 40-45 minutes.

Serve 8 Cooks Tip – Try using goats cheese as an alternative to feta. This recipe works with flavoured oils such as chilli and garlic too.

Strawberry, Brazil Nut & Banana Loaf Ingredients 100g strawberries 1 banana 2 eggs 50mls vegetable oil 175g plain flour 1 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp nutmeg Pinch of salt 80g Brazil nuts, coarsely chopped 25g strawberries, diced

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 170ºC Fan/Gas 4.

2. Place the strawberries and banana in a food processor and blend until smooth, or mash them with a fork.

3. Add the eggs and flour and blitz or mix well.

4. Place all the dried ingredients into a sieve and add to the fruit mix.

5. Gently mix in the chopped Brazil nuts and extra diced strawberries.

6. Pour the mixture into a lined loaf dish.

7. Bake for 40 minutes. Leave to cool in the tin.

Serve 6-8 Cooks Tip – can be toasted and served with a little butter or strawberry jam.

More Cooks Tips • Loaf cakes freeze well for up to three months. Once cooled freeze an entire loaf or cut cake into slices and wrap in a double layer of plastic wrap.

• Invest in a cake tester skewer! Dip into the middle of the cake, if wet batter clings to it you know your cake needs more time. Ovens vary in performance and sometimes need five minutes longer.

• If you run out or self-raising flour use 1 tsp baking powder to 128grams flour.

• Make your own low-fat spray by equal quantities of vegetable oil and water in a spray bottle. Shake before use.

• Brown sugar will bring extra moisture to your cake.

Coffee & Walnut Loaf Ingredients 115g soft margarine 115g caster sugar 2 eggs 115g, sifted self-raising flour ½ tsp baking powder 1 tbsp coffee granules mixed with 1 tbsp hot water 50g finely chopped walnuts Buttercream Topping 60g butter 200g icing sugar 1 tbsp coffee granules mixed with 1 tbsp hot water To Decorate 25g finely chopped walnuts

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 160ºC/Gas 3.

2. Cream the margarine and sugar together in a large bowl.

3. Beat in the eggs a little at a time.

4. Add the sifted flour and baking powder followed by the coffee mixture and finely chopped walnuts.

5. Bake for 30-35 minutes.

6. Make the butter cream by mixing together all the ingredients and refrigerate until the cake has cooled.

7. Spread the buttercream over the top of the cake and sprinkle with chopped walnuts.

Serves 6 Cooks Tip – for a crunchier topping.

Place 1 tbsp water into a pan with 25g caster sugar and bring up to boil.

Boil for 3-4 minutes until caramelised, stir in the nuts and once coated in the caramel transfer them onto a plate lined with greaseproof paper. Once cooled use crumbled as a topping.

Bramley Apple & Lemon Drizzle Loaf Ingredients 150g Bramley Cooking Apples, peeled and cored weight 150g caster sugar 2 eggs Rind and juice of 1 lemon 150g self-raising flour 25g cornflour Lemon Drizzle 40mls lemon juice 40g granulated sugar

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 170ºC/Gas 4.

2. Place the Bramley apple pieces into food processor with the caster sugar, eggs, lemon rind and juice and blitz to a puree.

3. Add the flour and baking powder and blitz again for 1-2 minutes.

4. Transfer the mixture into a lined loaf tin and bake for 35 minutes.

5. Leave to cool in the tin.

6. Make the drizzle while the cake is cooling by mixing together the lemon juice and granulated sugar.

7. Make small holes in the top of the cake with a cake skewer and pour the drizzle mixture over the top. Leave for 20 minutes before serving.

Cuts into 6-8 slices Cooks Tip – My recipe uses less lemon sugar drizzle compared to other Lemon Drizzle Cakes as the Bramley Apple moistens the cake sufficiently.

Banana & Chocolate Loaf Ingredients 2 bananas 150g golden caster sugar 100g softened butter or margarine 2 eggs 225g self-raising flour 1 tsp baking powder 2 tbsp Greek yoghurt or milk 90g coarsely chopped chocolate

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 170ºC Fan/ Gas 4.

2. Place the bananas and sugar into a food processor and blitz until smooth. Alternatively mash with a fork.

3. Add the softened butter and the eggs to the processor, blitz again or beat with a wooden spoon if making by hand.

4. Add the self-raising flour, baking powder and finely the yoghurt and chocolate.

5. Bake for 40-45 minutes. Leave to cool in the tin.

Serves 7-8

Grower Series Deux Fois Champagne A truly sustainable champagne. ‘Deux Fois’ literally means ‘twice’, the wine comes from the second press of the grapes, with the first press being used by a top producer in the Champagne region. The second pressing, historically discarded for champagne use as impure, is now used in this great, budget-friendly champagne.

Light in colour and oak on the nose, with peaches and apples. On the palate, citrus and pear with a slight salinity leading to a fresh finish.

A great pre-dinner drink that will not sit heavy. If you wanted to pair it or enjoy it with canapés, smoked salmon and cream cheese would be a match made in heaven.

Howards Folly, Alvarinho 2025 Vinho Verde Produced in Monção and Melgaço in the north of Portugal, on the border with the Galicia region of Spain, where Alvarinho grapes are solely grown. The cooler climate helps produce this crisp, mineralforward wine.

It is bright and expressive, giving citrus on the nose and palate, with a slight saline finish. Everything comes together to create a fresh, clean, and crisp wine that makes you rush to put that second bottle in the freezer whilst finishing the first.

Andeluna Malbec 1300 (2022) A classic Argentinian red. The “1300” refers to the altitude at which the grapes are grown — 1300 metres above sea level.

With consistent weather, it produces fruit with great colour and aromatic flavour.

Made from 100% Malbec grapes from a sustainable producer with minimal intervention.

Flavours of plums, strawberries, and red fruits with low tannins.

Pairs well with a meat-forward barbecue — big steaks, chops, and burgers.

Alternatively, a bowl of beef short rib ragù would also be a lovely match.

Hallgarten & Novum Wines.

Castelnau de Suduiraut Sauternes 2022 This is such a great dessert wine. Some dessert wines can be sickly and syrupy — this is not one of those.

It has apricot and marmalade on the nose, with sweet flavours on the palate such as pear and honey, alongside notes of citrus. It finishes crisp and fresh with a touch of acidity, without a heavy mouthfeel.

Serve ice cold, classically with desserts such as lemon tart, crème brûlée, or even a Bakewell pudding. However, do not be afraid to enjoy a glass alongside chicken liver parfait or even some Stilton for that sweet, sour, salty combination.

Rolls-Royce Presents Spectre Series II The relentless pursuit of perfection continues.

S

ince its introduction in 2022, Spectre has become one of the most significant and celebrated Rolls-Royce motor cars of the modern era, widely praised for its timeless design, serene performance and effortless driving character. Spectre Series II builds on this success. Engineering updates unlock up to 18% more range (390 total miles, WLTP), alongside higher torque of 1,015 Nm increased to 1,100 in Spirited Mode and up to 14% reduction in charging times. Newly crafted interior illuminations, an expanded palette of exquisite materials, and striking exterior treatments further elevate Spectre’s interior possibilities. These changes sharpen Spectre’s character while preserving the qualities that have already established it as a future classic.

Considered refinement, silent power While Spectre's range and performance already exceeded client expectations, engineers at Goodwood have recalibrated the motor car’s drivetrain to deliver even greater immediacy and control for Series II, further strengthening Black Badge Spectre’s standing as the most powerful Rolls-Royce in history. Power output now reaches 442 kW whilst torque rises to 1,015 Nm. In Black Badge Spectre Series II, Infinity Mode unlocks 500 kW of power, while Spirited Mode summons up to 1,100 Nm torque.

Thanks to re-engineered battery cell technology Spectre Series II’s potential driving distance is increased by up to 18% to 390 miles (WLTP) and charging times have been reduced by up to 14%. This reinforces the marque’s commitment to both electric serenity and uncompromised capability.

Spectre: a defining canvas for bespoke Spectre has emerged as one of the most compelling canvases for Bespoke in Rolls-Royce’s contemporary portfolio, with some clients requesting more than 20 individual and personal Bespoke elements in their motor car. Demand for Bespoke commissions on Spectre is surpassed only by Phantom. In addition to the near-limitless opportunities for Bespoke through the marque’s Private Offices, Spectre Series II introduces a new suite of crafted elements, materials and finishes as a response to clients’ increasing desire for highly ambitious and expressive commissions.

Exterior composure, reinforced The super-coupé’s celebrated fastback profile, clean surfacing and split headlamp signature are retained for Spectre Series II, underlining the marque’s confidence in this initial, widely acclaimed design. Since launch, Spectre has been widely praised as one of the most elegant automotive forms of the era and now stands alongside Phantom Coupé and other revered Goodwoodera models in the marque’s collector canon. Of the numerous international accolades Spectre has received, its timeless design is consistently celebrated by judging panels, while clients have embraced Spectre as a true modern masterpiece. To accentuate Spectre’s form and surfacing, a new solid exterior finish, named Ethereal Blue, has been developed for Spectre Series II. A bold new palette for Black Badge For Black Badge Spectre Series II, a suite of new design enhancements further dramatise the marque’s alter ego, amplifying its intense and uncompromising character.

A new Iced Black Exterior Detailing offer has been developed, transforming almost all of the motor car’s brightwork with a matte finish. The treatment is applied to the grille surround, sideframe finishers, bumper inserts, ‘Double R’ Badge of Honour side surround, door handles and the Spirit of Ecstasy.

The effect is achieved using a specially developed matte clear coat, creating a refined, satin-like finish. Notably, the vanes of the Pantheon Grille remain polished – a decision taken by RollsRoyce designers to preserve the motor car’s identity.

Spectre and its clients At the heart of Spectre’s success is its founding philosophy.

It was conceived as a Rolls-Royce first – defined by silence, effortlessness and presence – brought to life through electric power. In doing so, it delivers an experience completely in tune with the marque’s values, confirming Rolls-Royce’s authority in shaping the future of super-luxury motoring.

This approach has clearly resonated with clients. In 2025, Spectre retained its position as the marque's second bestselling model globally. To inform the development of Spectre Series II, Rolls-Royce specialists mapped how clients live with their Spectre. Typically the second Rolls-Royce in a sevencar garage, Spectre is nonetheless driven extensively. While the average annual mileage of around 4,000 miles (6,500 km) remains consistent with other two-door Rolls-Royce motor cars, such as Wraith, Dawn, and Phantom Coupé, Spectre is increasingly used for personal driving enjoyment, charged almost exclusively at home, and most often driven solo – affirming its identity as a true driver’s Rolls-Royce.

Spectre’s effortless usability has seen many clients embrace it as a daily motor car. One European client has travelled more than 30,000 miles (50,000 km) in the two years since taking delivery – more than three times the average annual mileage typically recorded by a Rolls-Royce.

Spectre’s peerless driving experience is an important expression of this motor car’s success though not the only one.

It is equally recognised by clients as a long-term emotional asset and a unique canvas for Bespoke individualisation.

For example, Spectre has been reimagined as a tribute to a client-couple’s lifelong relationship, symbolised by a Bespoke Starlight Headliner configured with the constellations as they were on the day they first met; a celebration, through exquisite marquetry, of a cherished family dog, named Bailey; an extension of a client’s home, directly mirroring the hues and textures of their living space; and a continuation of a notable haute joaillerie collection, drawing inspiration from a colour associated with their favourite designer. A client in Korea has taken the act of commissioning further still by creating a gallery space within their residence in which to display their Spectre as a work of art.

These insights reflect the emotional breadth, creative depth and driving pleasure clients now associate with this landmark motor car, all of which shaped the subtle refinements introduced for Spectre Series II.
