elcome to the January/February issue of Made. I hope that you've all stayed warm! There's a lovely fresh chill in the air, and when the sun shines, don't you think that the frosty countryside sparkles magically at this time of the year.

We delve into this issue and meet our lovely regulars along with the news and events from across the region. We have a walk with Sally Outram and some wonderful recipes (with a little bit of spice, to keep you warm) from Teresa Bovey.

Dene Wood, Head Gardener at Clumber Park has your seasonal gardening tips and Erin McDaid keeps us updated with the latest from Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust.

Council Earns Silver Award For Its Support For Armed Forces Colleagues Mansfield District Council has had an award for supporting the defence and armed forces community extended for another five years.

It has been re-awarded a Silver Award in the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme which encourages employers to support to the defence and the armed forces community.

Among the criteria the council has had to achieve as an employer to qualify for the Silver Award are: • Demonstrating that service personnel and the armed forces community are not unfairly disadvantaged as part of their recruiting and selection processes; • Ensuring that its workforce is aware of positive policies towards colleagues with defence issues and responsibilities such as a publicised and positive

HR policy on serving as a Reservist; • Demonstrating support to Reserve mobilisations and support to training by providing at least five days additional leave (paid wherever possible).

The Silver Award lasts for five years during which the council will be striving towards achieving the Gold Award status.

It is one of various ways the council supports its Armed Forces and local veterans, including signing up to the Armed Forces Covenant.

This is a promise from the council that those who serve or have served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly, and it pledges a commit-

ment to supporting the armed forces community in Mansfield.

The council operates a Veterans Crisis Fund which aims to help ex-service personnel in need of help, whether through disability, sickness, old age or poverty. Grants of up to £50 are available with each case treated on its own merits.

Female Drivers Think Pink

Female drivers in Notts and Derby urged to Think Pink for career move A foundation that was set up following the tragic murder of a 10-year-old Nottinghamshire girl is championing a campaign to recruit female taxi drivers – it is a bid to empower women in the workforce.

Rosie May Foundation’s Think Pink campaign has partnered with DG Cars and Western Cars to increase the number of women taxi drivers in the Nottingham and Derby region. Currently, women make up less than 2% of taxi drivers in the UK. Mary Storrie, co-founder of the Rosie May Foundation, said: “This project has been two years in the making. We partnered with DG Cars and Western Cars a year ago.

At that time, they had just one female driver among the 1,400 employed drivers working for the firm.”

The project is now becoming a driving force in female recruitment into the industry. Some 20 new women taxi drivers have already signed up with the Think Pink scheme.

Rosie May Foundation was set up in January 2004 following the murder of Rosie May who was killed in December 2003 by a 17-year-old boy she knew.

In response to public support and donations at the time, the foundation was set up with funds going to Sheffield Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Since then, the not-forprofit foundation has grown internationally after the family, seeking solace after their daughter's death, holidayed in Sri Lanka the Christmas following Rosie May’s death. It was the year a devastating Tsunami hit the country.

However, a palm planted in memory of their daughter survived and inspired a series of fund-raising projects in the country including a female driver project. The UK Think Pink project stems from this initiative.

Mary said: “We first began the driver project in Sri Lanka in 2016 following a UN report that found that 90% of women had suffered some form of sexual harassment while using public transport. We wanted to champion safer journeys and economically empower women. A fleet of 10 women driven tuk tuks now operates in Sri Lanka.”

She continued: “There are many parallels between the UK driver campaign and this project.

“As well as empowering and supporting women, we want to educate them to realise that driving is a career that can provide flexibility, especially if they have domestic responsibilities that restrict their conventional full time working hours.”

driving for the firm for 15 years. She will now support and mentor new drivers as well as continuing to drive herself. As Baljit, one of the new drivers explained, flexibility is a key driver for the role. She said: “I can choose my working hours, which means I can spend more time with my children and still earn money to manage my household bills.

“From the bottom of my heart I am very happy to be part of the lovely Think Pink team who have helped me start a new job as a private hire driver.”

“We have initially partnered with DG cars, based in my hometown, which has the largest fleet of drivers in the East Midlands, but the aim is to eventually expand the scheme” she said.

“Taxi driving covers all sorts of journeys from school transport to hospital appointments.

We help recruits who match the criteria to attain their taxi driving license through the DG Academy and Think Pink scheme.”

Another driver, Sapheena, added: “I returned to work after 28 years and now I have achieved 1000 hires!”

Those signing up will be selfemployed, but the scheme provides backup to enable this move. Drivers will need a clean driving licence and DBS check, they can use their own car or, if full time, can use one of DG’s Cars.

With a general shortage of taxi drivers since the pandemic, Mary added that training new taxi drivers was fast becoming a success story that long term, she hoped to roll out nationally.

Each product acts as an individual component, which needs to function harmoniously with the rest of the elements in your bathroom. In a luxury bathroom, each individual part must hold longevity and perform above and beyond expectations.

What is the importance of the design elements in a luxury bathroom?

New Vision For Mansfield’s Future An inspirational vision has been produced for the future of Mansfield, setting out bold ambitions for the district.

The vision is outlined in a new strategy called Make it in Mansfield, which has been developed by the Mansfield Place Board – an alliance of local leaders, businesses and other organisations.

The strategy was officially launched on the 13 Nov 23 at the NTU Mansfield University Hub in the town where guests from business, public and third sectors were welcomed by Executive Mayor Andy Abrahams and Chair of the Mansfield Place Board, Andrew Cropley.

The Mayor said: “This new strategy is all about making the district an attractive place to live, work, invest and visit – which is why it was so important for us to hear from as many people as possible about what they want for the future of their district.

“The feedback was fantastic. People told us what they like about Mansfield and what should be different. They want even more reasons to be proud of the place they call home. They want to be ambitious and forward-looking.

And we are committed to making this a reality.”

Mr Cropley, who is also Principal of Vision West Nottinghamshire College, added: “Together, the members of the Place Board are determined to build an era of new prosperity and progress.

This is our vision – using the ‘power of positive’ to create a confident future for Mansfield.”

The Sherwood Seedbank Acorn Hunt The Sherwood Seedbank, a one-of-a-kind community tree nursery based near Sherwood Pines, invited members of the public to collect 10,000 acorns with them in the heart of Sherwood Forest, right next to the Major Oak. They saw an incredible turnout, despite the weather, with 117 people joining in the fun. From locals, to holiday makers, to school trips, the Seedbank bought a great selection of people out to help.

On the 1 Nov 23, Alex, our Community Tree Nurse Officer, hosted an acorn sowing event at Vicar Water Country Park. With the help of volunteers, she managed to sow around 1,000 acorns, which is a fantastic start to the planting season.

The Sherwood Seedbank is run by the Sherwood Forest Trust – an independent charity based in Edwinstowe – who carry out a planting programmes each year with local schools, landowners and community groups, helping to increase the number of native trees in the Sherwood Forest area. One of the trees most associated with Sherwood Forest is the English oak, but it can

take 2-3 years to grow saplings to a size suitable for planting out.

With the new community tree nursery, the Sherwood Seedbank are now able to collect and sow seeds, which are then propagated and grown on to heathy young trees and native plants ready for planting out.

They will be able to collect all types of Sherwood tree seeds, grow them on and then plant them out to extend Sherwood Forest!

Reflecting on the recent activities, Matt Smith, Conservation Manager for SFT, said, “It has been a great effort by everyone involved in the collection and sowing of the acorns and we look forward to nurturing them into the next generation of Sherwood oaks before returning them to be planted in the Sherwood Forest area.” www.sherwoodforesttrust.org.uk

Ten New & Improved Sherwood Area To Play Parks Open Receive Investment Newark & Sherwood District Council is pleased to announce that its investment into play parks across the district is now complete and all ten parks are open for you to enjoy!

The Government has announced that Sherwood will benefit from a £20 million investment as part of its Levelling Up Fund Round 3.

The investment into the ten parks has gone towards new, imaginative pieces of play equipment, including inclusive play equipment, refurbishing the current equipment, and the removal and replacement of various aging equipment.

The District Council has been working hard, developing exciting regeneration projects for Ollerton and Clipstone.

The ten parks that have been improved are Mead Way Play Park in Balderton, Lincoln Road Recreation Ground Play Area in Newark, Thorpe Oaks Play Area in Coddington, Hillcote Drive in Clipstone, Old Tannery Drive in Lowdham, Grove Street Play Area in Newark, Cleveland Square in Newark, Turner Lane in Boughton, Vicar Water County Park and Sconce and Devon Park.

The Green Flag Awardwinning Sconce and Devon Park now features two improved areas including a castle-themed play area, built with fun and imaginative play in mind and as a nod to Newark’s Civil War history. The brand-new Fitness Zone is quickly becoming a popular feature at the park, which was already a well-loved destination for fitness and well-being activities such as walking, park runs, and personal training classes. The zone is available for all park visitors to use for free and is

a fantastic space for those who want to exercise using equipment whilst still getting to enjoy the outdoors.

Work to develop, modernise and improve the play parks began in August following the District Council’s approval of the plans earlier in the year. Various equipment has been installed at the ten parks including new swing sets, wheelchair carousels, shell swing seats and more!

These exciting new developments support the District Council’s ambition to create a greener district, with materials such as recycled plastics found in the sea used in the improvements. This sustainable sourcing of materials was successfully implemented for the development of the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Garden, in which a number of features were built using recycled materials including new bin stores and bug hotels made from fly-tipped wood that had been cleared from illegally dumped waste around the district. Similar features have been proposed in the plans for the development of Sherwood Avenue Park.

Councillor Paul Peacock, Leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council explains: “This announcement is long-overdue, but it is well deserved and needed, especially for Ollerton.

Our regeneration team have been working hard at shaping ideas to where they currently are and without our ‘ready-to-deliver’ projects, the much-needed investment may not have been so forthcoming.

The District Council has two projects that it hopes can be funded by this investment. The first is the Ollerton Town Centre Hub which is a joint venture between Newark and Sherwood District Council, Ollerton and Boughton Town Council, Nottinghamshire County Council, and the owners of the existing Forest Centre in the town.

Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance (LNAA) are giving a mega galloping thank you to members of East Midlands Dressage Group for raising over £1,000 at their summer fun ride held last year.

Honorary Secretary, Liz Hanson said "We raised £1084.00 for Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance in May this year from a fun ride on the beautiful Thoresby Estate, Lincolnshire, with kind permission from Gregor and Kathryn Pierrepont.

The Harley Foundation has a rich history of championing creativity. It was set up in 1978

by Ivy, Duchess of Portland, to “encourage creativity in us all”.

Since then we have welcomed over 75 creative businesses to our subsidised studio spaces.

Explore the work of each of the remarkable makers currently in residence. Each studio has produced work specifically for the exhibition. From sculptures crafted from the remnants of the other artists’ studios to an intricately embroidered death shroud, a hand-crafted guitar to a gigantic porcelain vessel – there is something to inspire everyone.

“Aspects of Art” is an exhibition at Bassetlaw Museum by four local artists: Gail Stafford, Sheila Robinson, Alan and Susan Broughton. The exhibition explores the wide variety of materials, styles and techniques that these artists use to convey their ideas, scenes and feelings.

The four artists are all members of the Worksop Society of Artists. They use a variety of media from encaustic, watercolour and pastels to print, acrylic, textile and more to take their inspiration through to completed works.

Jeremy and Dee share a rich history of working in the arts having first met over thirty years ago whilst working at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

After a career in the Arts & Museums, Jeremy now paints in oils but has never been overly concerned about exhibiting his work, whilst Dee makes ceramics and jewellery daily and is constantly driven to exhibit and sell her pieces. Over the years she has set up and run her own successful contemporary craft galleries and now sells her work all over the world.

Jeremy grew up in Cleethorpes and has a long and rich history of working within the visual arts. His experience includes running the Usher Gallery and The Collection in Lincoln and whilst there devised the Frequency Festival. He has curated many exhibitions and worked alongside renowned artists including Grayson Perry, Yinka Shonibare, Lucy Jones and Bruce Mclean to name just a few. He currently works as Deputy Director at the Attenborough Arts Centre at Leicester University. He sits on a number of arts boards including Charnwood Arts and the Heslam Trust.

Both artists’ work is full of life and colour and reflect their joy of being alive, with subject matter ranging from landscapes and portraits to work inspired by Staffordshire pottery and the antiques that furnish their Georgian period home in Grantham.

Dee was originally a dancer, born and brought up in London, who won a place at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. She performed in theatres up and down the country but became frustrated by the temporary nature of live performance and so began to create more permanent pieces of artwork.

Nature-based activities in a monthly club just for adults.

Each session is different as we move through the seasons and usually includes fire lighting, foraging and a craft skill, all based round the campfire at our secluded bushcraft camp.

Activities can include whittling, weaving, natural dyeing, leather work and antler carving.

These sessions encourage a genuine connection with nature and can help to improve mental health and wellbeing.

Historic Objects The story of a beheaded King, on show at the Harley Foundation, Welbeck.

26 Jan - 28 Jul Marking 375 years since his execution, the Harley Foundation will show a rare miniature painting of Charles I with mica overlays, alongside a pair of black silk gloves said to have been worn by the King on the scaffold.

From 26 Jan until 28 Jul, visitors can see the miniature painting and gloves in the Harley Foundation’s awardwinning, Nottinghamshire museum.

These objects tell the story of Charles I’s trial and execution, giving context to permanent museum exhibits which include the pearl earring taken from his severed head, his gold toothpick and emerald seal.

The miniature shows Charles I at his trial, wearing a black hat and cloak. This portrait can be transformed by ten painted mica overlays – much like a modern paper doll. Visitors can see Charles surrounded by spectators at his trial, the executioner raising his severed head and finally, Charles as a martyr.

Lisa Gee, Director of the Harley Foundation, said: “Objects like these provide a fascinating insight into the cult of Charles I. His miniature tells a bloody story and was made to be treasured and carried around, it seems ironic that a deeply unpopular King gained a new kind of status from his execution. It also points to the deep

loyalty felt by royalists towards the King.”

The pearl earring worn by Charles I at his execution is on permanent display in the museum. It was taken from the ear of the severed head of the King and given to his daughter, the mother of King William III, who in turn gave it to the 1st Duke of Portland.

Also on show at the Harley Foundation is Charles I’s gold toothpick, a silver cup used to give Charles’ last communion, his emerald seal and personal collection of family miniatures.

These objects are on show in ‘Unseen Treasures of The Portland Collection’ a major new historic art exhibition at The Harley Foundation in Nottinghamshire.

Artworks in the free entry exhibition include a drawing by Michelangelo and Van Dyck’s portrait of Charles II when a young boy. A highlight of the exhibition is a picture gallery stacked with Tudor and Jacobean portraits.

The exhibition is free to enter and there is a large, free car park.

The Speaker says, like almost everyone else, I have felt deeply shocked, but also helpless in the face of recent events in Ukraine. However, as an art historian with a long-standing interest in the relationship between Art and War, Art and displacement, Art and adversity, one thing I can do is to alert people to the huge contribution refugees from conflict zones around the world, past and present, make it to the culture of the Country that takes them in.

Therefore, the Speaker offers this brand-new Lecture, entitled Island Sanctury which will celebrate the achievements against the odds of artists as diverse as miniaturist, Isaac Oliver in the 16th century, painters, James Tissot in the 19th century and David Bomberg and Lucien Freud in the 20th century, plus many more as we move into the later part of the 20th century and beyond.

140 Exhibition: The Story Of Us Southwell Minster celebrates 140 years as a Cathedral.

2024 is a big year for Southwell Minster: in 2024 it will have been a Cathedral for 140 years. To celebrate, the Minster is hosting a special exhibition.

The 140 Exhibition: The Story of Us will explore 140 objects over 10 months, from February to November. Each object will reveal a unique part of the Minster’s story and the history of the Cathedral, Gardens and Palace.

o accustomed have we become to ‘doom and gloom’ announcements and proclamations relating to wildlife, our natural environment and the negative impacts of climate change that it can be difficult for those of us with a passion for nature and the countryside to remain hopeful for the future. Thankfully, a major new project designed to bring water voles back from the brink right here in Nottinghamshire provides more than a glimmer of hope.

The endearing and once ubiquitous water vole, made famous, albeit incorrectly labelled, as the much loved ‘Ratty’ from the charming Wind in the Willows story is sadly widely acknowledged as the UK’s fastest declining mammal. The most recent surveys for the species in Nottinghamshire found that they were absent or had a significantly reduced range in areas where they had previously been recorded. This worrying local evidence, when combined with continued pressure on water vole populations across the UK which has resulted in their recent extinction in some English counties, makes it clear that urgent action is required to prevent these important and charismatic creatures being lost from our county.

Now, thanks to a grant of just shy of half a million pounds from Natural England’s Species Recovery Programme Capital Grant Scheme, Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, which helped coordinate the first county-wide survey for the species back in the late 1990s, will kick start an ambitious project to restore water vole populations across three key areas, Erewash, Idle Valley and Sherwood. The funding will be invested in measures to restore and create vital wetland habitat to support water voles and other species, boosting water vole numbers at our Idle Valley Nature Reserve and a focussed and coordinated programme of mink control across 900 hectares of wetland habitat and more than 50km of rivers. Habitat creation will include 40 specially designed ponds and improvements to at least 10km of riverside habitats including new reedbeds with networks of deeper ditches suitable for water voles to feed and to create nests.

In addition to focussing on habitat and boosting water vole numbers we must also tackle other causes of the water voles’ decline head on and there is no escaping the fact that predation by non-native American mink has been devastating. Since escaping or being intentionally freed from fur farms back in the 1950s and 1960s, mink have has become well established across the UK – leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. Its carnivorous nature means it poses a threat to the water vole as well as other native species including ground-nesting birds such as terns. Mink are good swimmers and females are small enough to enter the water-line burrows of water voles and take their young. Fiercely territorial mink often construct dens close to the water and the females have one litter of four to six kittens a year adding further pressure on native species.

Whilst predators are a natural part of any ecosystem, the evidence that mink have caused an imbalance is stark and clear. Put simply, they shouldn’t be here. Because they don’t have any effective natural predators themselves, without urgent action the future for water voles in our county is bleak and we risk losing this much-loved species forever. No one comes into nature conservation to kill, but such is the plight of the water vole that we have a duty to act – and this is why we’ll be controlling mink numbers.

One of the most exciting aspects of the project is reintroduction of water voles at our Idle Valley Nature Reserve, on the outskirts of Retford, where there is little chance of natural recolonisation.

This will involve the creation of a water vole ‘Ark’ site within the 58-hectare enclosure created back in 2021 to enable beavers to be reintroduced to the county. Our beaver enclosure, which is already facilitating the restoration of wetland habitats to benefit a wide range of species, provides a unique setting to establish a healthy and thriving water vole population which in time will disperse across the whole 375 hectares of the reserve, by far the largest in our care, and into the River Idle and beyond.

The Trust expects the project to provide the foundations for a county-wide recovery programme for water voles in the years ahead. It is hoped that as well as reversing the plight of water voles, this significant investment will benefit other threatened species including bittern, sedge warbler, harvest mouse, otter, nathusius pipistrelle and common tern – now that must be good news.

Jayne Day Williams is a retired head teacher and precision artist. Originally from Wales, Jayne has embarked on an ambitious Draw My Town project with the aim of capturing the many heritage and architecturally rich properties that can be found across Retford. Her signature grid-work and line illustrations are inspiring a legion of fans. Made caught up with Jayne at her Retford home studio…

W

e discovered that Jayne’s father was very artistic. As a colliery Blacksmith he would hand draw very technical engineering diagrams and designs. She would watch him closely and try to replicate them. This fascination had a huge influence on her style.

“Ever since I was a toddler, I would be drawing circles or squares and playing with pens”, Jayne laughs. “I was clearly determined art was for me, even then! I remember being fascinated by my father’s handwriting, which was a calligraphy style, and in the precise nature of the drawings he would produce for items at work.”

This interest in art followed her throughout school years during which time she mostly enjoyed art and athletics but was urged to pursue a more stable career. Jayne ended up taking teacher training qualifications at Eaton Hall in Retford, but never really saw it as a compromise, and pursued a degree in Art and Psychology.

“I actually discovered Eaton Hall when I was on an athletics school tour. We were at Berry Hill in Mansfield and that’s when I got to see Nottinghamshire and quite liked the area”, Jayne explains.

Jayne became a primary school teacher, and then headteacher for 24 years and interestingly her passion for art was always present even in day-to-day school interactions. “I found that art had hugely therapeutic uses, and I would harness these when dealing with pupils who had challenging behaviour or had been through some form of trauma. By sitting with them and drawing I found they could relax and open up more, at which point you could have a dialogue.”

It was during the Covid lockdowns that Jayne spent considerable periods alone in Beckingham. She survived the isolation by turning the experience into a solo art retreat. ”I needed to fill my days and by creating bright drawings I brought colour to rather gloomy days.”

This coupled with retirement six years’ ago and a return to Retford to set up home has given Jayne the time and space to be able to fully embrace her love of art and bring this to the forefront of her life.

“I have recently completed a full renovation project of my home and created a new garden from scratch but in between I have spent time drawing, designing and thinking up new ideas. It’s the perfect balance. I started out sketching neighbours’ houses and moved away from conceptual design to return to more liner and architectural style. In doing so, I’ve gone full circle to that precision dynamic I loved as a child.”

It’s clear that Jayne has created a signature precision style that stems from gridwork. We were curious to understand how this came about. We were also keen to understand what materials she likes to work with.

“Well, this evolved from when I was working with children”, she explains. “I’d give them a small square rather than a large piece of paper to draw on. The small scale of a square broke down any barriers, they weren’t as fazed, and would go on to draw some really incredible things and explore their imagination. It’s also a great way to get them to collaborate with their class mates on one big piece of art by bringing each of the squares together.

“In terms of how I like to work, I favour graphic marker pens, which some people might find an interesting choice, but having tried watercolour and oils, I just find that I can achieve the precision and control I require with the pens.”

Jayne has been busy creating commissions for friends and family and through them other referrals. She will also be creating a website with online store in the future. But her immediate plans are to continue to collaborate with Retford

Arts Hub with whom she has been hosting both adult and children’s workshops and working with businesses and wedding venues who have been commissioning drawings of their premises.

“It’s fun and playful and gives me chance to fully immerse into my art and imagination.”

"I hope to present more workshops and activities at the Retford Arts Hub as they are wonderful to work with. I’m proud to have some of my art exhibited there. There is also scope for new ideas and ventures with other galleries and venues in the future. Keep an eye on my Instagram page.”

In the meantime, Jayne is putting all her creative energy into her current labour of love projects – Window Stories and Draw My Town.

‘Window Stories sort of evolved from the gridwork pieces. I would draw window outlines and then make them in to story boards with my grandchildren and my imagination grew to create all manner of scenarios often playful with humour and gives me chance to fully immerse into my art and imagination.

“You’ll see some of the scenes depict day-to-day living, and then others might have a wild animal, a clown or a fantasy

scene in the window. Each window enables you to create a story, and when collating various windows, you can build a larger story, drawing on your own imagination and seeing where it takes you.”

“With the Draw My Town project, I wanted to capture historical, landmark or intriguing properties across Retford to collate into a collection. It may well be exhibited one day, but it has been more something I was personally interested in. It has been an incredible journey finding some beautiful buildings and hopefully doing them justice through my precision style likeness. This is still very much work in progress and I still have many properties to photograph and then start to sketch out. laire has worked as a professional photographer for over six years, covering weddings and families, as well as commercial work too. Based in Newark, she has a great knowledge of working with Nottinghamshire wedding venues, as well as being happy to travel further a-field.

“My passion is weddings! I adore them. I love the vibe and excitement of a wedding day and building up great relationships with my couples. I pride myself on taking a genuine interest in my couples, getting to know them ahead of their wedding.”

Working with couples ahead of the wedding day, Claire ensures that they have at least two pre-wedding chats where she can find out about them, talk about their day and what they want it to look like. Claire explains, “It’s so important to establish who the VIP's are at my weddings, be organised with timings and know my couples well enough, that I can turn up, crack on, join in and capture their wedding day! I genuinely love being a part of it!”

Claire isn’t shy about joining in with the day to put everyone at ease, especially when it comes to little ones, “I've got five children... yes five! So, I’m great with kids, used to madness and happy to muck in and get my hands dirty!”

Every couple has a different vision of how their day will work and as a photographer it is important to keep everything as natural as possible, make everyone feel at ease to capture the best moments. Claire says, “Being a wedding photographer for so long has taught me many things and I'm always happy to pass on advice to my couples and keen to help on the run up and on the big day.

I love to take natural photos of the day as it happens, but of course, we want to

ensure that we get photos of those VIP's and some couple shots.

Claire’s experience working with couples, families and groups means that the happy couple can concentrate on themselves and enjoying family time while she captures the key moments of the day and can advise how to create perfect photographs too.

“I recommend keeping group shots to a minimum - around 8-10 and we have some fun with them too! During couple shots, I'll take my couples off for a walk, I love movement and natural photos and moments. I love to have the banter with my couples, I know it’s difficult being in front of the camera and I want my couples to feel as relaxed as possible. I also love photographing details. Couples pay a lot for flowers, shoes, wedding outfits, stationary etc... I make sure I take photos of everything and like to get creative! I want my couples to look back at their photos and be able to relive their day from start to finish through their gallery.”

As well as making sure the essential elements during the Wedding are captured, Claire also looks for the magic in the room, the photographs that are unplanned, a little surprising moment that makes that perfect snapshot in time.

“I'm all for the candid’s too - any laughing, silliness or ugly crying and I'm on it! Capturing reactions are an absolute favourite and it’s great to share these moments with a photo I've captured without someone realising!”

Pre Wedding Beauty Plan As soon as the engagement party is over, every couple is planning ahead to the wedding day. There are so many elements to organise, from the venue and the seating plan to the dress, the rings and of course the honeymoon. Time flies, before you know it you’re about to embark on one of the most epic days of your life. With all this in mind, we take a look at a plan of action for the Bride, to make the most of the months ahead of the wedding for a little time to focus on themselves.

Months Ahead Time to start focusing on your beauty routine, daily cleanser and moisturiser and perhaps a facial too.

This is the time to decide if you will invest in a make-up artist and a hair stylist or if you will be organising your own on the day.

If you’re going for professional, research your make-up artists and hairdressers to find the individual that will work with your style.

Look into treatments and book them in months in advance rather than too close to the date in case of allergic reactions. Make sure advice and treatments are all done by professional dermatologists. This can be

your testing period; try the new products you like the look of and experiment now to find the perfect match.

One Month To Go Gentle exfoliating once a week and also now a deep cleansing facial. Only gentler treatments nearer the time as and intense treatments might cause unwanted reactions before the big day.

If you’re considering a fake tan, now is the time for a trial run, this is something that you can also try at home at this point.

3 Weeks To Go The time to schedule in the hair and makeup tests if you haven’t already done so.

Consider the look that you are trying to achieve, the

climate and feel that time of year and your personal style.

Leave the test styles in for a full day to see how you can work with it throughout the day and into the evening and what causes issues.

2 Weeks To Go Let’s start with hair at this point. If you need any touchups, a trim, roots attending to or hair colouring, around about now is the ideal point to organise this. If you are considering extensions it is also advisable to have these a couple of weeks in advance.

1 Week Before A little extra grooming and exfoliation now, perhaps an eyebrow shape, perfect the smaller details. Within

this week plan your waxing appointment, luckily this can last up to six weeks, which should cover you all the way past your honeymoon!

Pick out your essentials now that you’ll need on the day, this might include a powder, lipstick or lip balm and perhaps your favourite mascara. Don’t forget a few tissues (just in case) and a small fragrance too.

1 Day Before Time to relax (perhaps with your bridal team) with a pedicure and manicure, perfect the nail polish perhaps with a French manicure or a natural shade.

Drink plenty of water to keep hydrated and you’ll be refreshed and glow on the inside as well as the outside!

Banish The Dark Days Of Winter

Plan a wonderful visit to our Snowdrop & Spring flower gardens in 2024.

E

ach year the National Garden Scheme starts the garden visiting season with its inspirational Snowdrop and Spring Flower gardens. Hundreds of gardens sprinkled with snowdrops - these delightful harbingers of spring - and wonderful, colour contrasting spring blooms including the bright gold of aconites and soft purple of crocus, open their gates to the public from late January through February and into March.

“After the long, dark winter months, the appearance of these beautiful early spring flowers really lifts the spirits and heralds the start of all the wonderful gardens to come,” says National Garden Scheme Chief Executive, George Plumptre. “Year on year more and more people discover the joys of

these late winter / early spring garden visits, many of which are accompanied by tea and cake or a warming bowl of soup! Our expert garden owners are also on hand to share their top tips of how to grow snowdrops with many selling a good selection of varieties too.”

Over 100 gardens open their gates in England, Wales and Northern Ireland as part of this wonderful celebration of the new garden visiting season.

11am-4pm The grounds of Norwood Park date back to medieval times when they were a series of deer parks. A new garden on the south front of the C18 house was created in 2021 to showcase plants for all seasons. To the west, a lime avenue lined with snowdrops and daffodils creates a spectacular scene and leads on to Mrs. Delaney’s path, to the ornamental temple. New Year Gardening Dene's gardening tips for January & February.

T

he shortest day has passed, and spring is inbound. While this is soul-nourishing news, do try to savour the winter months. The long shadows and the breath-taking sunrises and sunsets that bookend our day are obvious highlights.

Snowdrops, Iris and Daffodil provide most of the flower now, but it won’t be long before the Blackthorn lights up our hedgerows with its blossom.

In winter, its often-assumed gardeners are yarning socks and leaning on forks regaling fables of champion marrows, but the reality is much different. We use winter to reset, review and plan, setting ourselves up for the hectic growing season. There is a surprising amount of office work required to run a large garden team, a good amount of that is done now.

The garden still has plenty to be getting on with. The months of January and February are the time to look at winter pruning apples and pears, thinning congested spur systems and reducing overcrowded fruit buds within the system itself. Roses can also be pruned around now, along with wisteria.

Our indoor vines are pruned and ‘scraped’, removing loose bark that harbours pests before we apply wash.

It’s an epic job and thankfully, we have an amazing team of volunteers to support us.

It’s time to audit and top up the seed collection.

Check sow-by dates and consider swaps with friends.

Cleaning glasshouses now will pay huge dividends in the summer, both for better light transmission and pest reduction. Consider sharpening tools, having machinery serviced and top-up consumables such as feeds and sowing media.

If you can, leave out some bird food. We adore watching a grind of Blackbirds feasting on windfalls in the new year, a profound reminder of the importance of leaving a little for nature.

Spicy Vegetable Rice

Spicy Dhal

Cucumber & Mint Raita

Ingredients 1 tbsp vegetable oil ½ tsp cumin seeds ½ tsp mustard seeds ½ tsp turmeric powder 2 curry leaves 1 red onion, finely chopped 50g cashew nuts (optional) 1 red pepper, seeded, cored and very finely diced 1 green chilli, very finely chopped 1 tbsp lemon juice Small tin 198g sweetcorn, drained and rinsed in cold water Small tin 215g chick peas, drained 3 tbsp frozen peas 100g cooked basmati rice 2 tbsp freshly chopped coriander

Ingredients 200g split mung beans, huskless 2-3 cloves of garlic thinly sliced 1 large white onion, thinly sliced 30ml vegetable oil ½ tsp turmeric ½ tsp grounded cumin ½ tsp salt 1 green or red chilli, chopped into tiny dice 3 fresh tomatoes, skinned and diced

Ingredients 250g Greek or natural yogurt 1 tbsp mint sauce ½ tsp caster sugar 2 tsp freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 tbsp chopped fresh coriander ½ cucumber, coarsely grated Salt and black pepper

Method 1. Heat the oil in a large pan or wok, add the cumin and mustard seeds and as soon as the mustard seeds begin to pop add all the remaining spices, onions, cashews, pepper, chilli and cook for 3-4 minutes.

2. Add all the remaining ingredients except the rice and coriander and stir fry for a further 3 minutes.

3. Finally add the rice, mixing together all the flavours and heat through until piping hot.

4. Garnish with coriander and season to taste before serving.

Serves 6 Nb Left-over shredded turkey may also be added to this recipe.

For garnish Fresh coriander

Method 1. Rinse the mung beans well in cold water through a sieve and then place in a pan, cover with cold water, bring up to boil and cook for 10 minutes. Skim off any froth that forms during cooking and once cooked drain and set aside.

2. Heat the oil in a frying pan, add the onions, garlic and salt and fry for 3-4 minutes.

3. Add the spices, fry for ½ minute and then add the chilli to the pan with the diced tomatoes and mix well.

4. Add the reserved cooked dahl to the spices with 70 mls water and cover and simmer for 10 minutes stirring occasionally, until most of the moisture has been absorbed.

5. Sprinkle with chopped coriander before serving.

Method 1. Place the yogurt, mint, sugar, lemon and coriander into a bowl and mix together.

2. Add the grated cucumber, season and serve.

Mango & Pineapple Raita Mix together a little chopped fresh mango, chopped pineapple and chopped red chilli, add 1 tbsp lemon juice, natural yoghurt and season to taste. Good with a turkey curry.

Spicy Naan Cooks Tip – Make a shop bought naan a little more interesting by adding chopped peppers and onion on the top before warming them in your oven or microwave.

Finely dice a small pepper (and chilli if you like a spicy finish). Mix with a very finely chopped red or white onion and some dried or freshly chopped coriander and microwave on full power for 2-3 minutes. Drizzle a little butter or oil over the top of the Naan and sprinkle the mixture over the top and warm through in the oven as per packet instructions.

Slow Cooked Lamb & Spinach Curry

Air-Fryer Chicken Tikka Skewers Ingredients 4-5 chicken thighs, cut into cubes or strips 3 tbsp Tikka curry powder 4 tbsp Greek yoghurt Juice of ½ lemon or lime To serve Naan breads, raita, and mango chutney

Method 1. Combine all the ingredients together in a bowl and leave to marinate for at least 2 hours or overnight.

2. Thread the chicken onto 4 small wooden skewers. Place into the air fryer and cook for 18-20 minutes at 180ºC. Turn them over half way through cooking – no preheating required.

3. Alternatively place them under a pre-heated grill, turning the skewer once or twice during cooking.

Makes 4 skewers Nb Make sure the skewers fit into your air fryer drawer. Wooden skewers are best soaked in water before using. Result is especially moist chicken in an airfryer.

Cooks Tips – to make your own Tikka Spice - mix together 1 tbsp chilli powder, ½ tbsp paprika and 1tbsp garam masala or curry powder.

Ingredients 2 tbsp rapeseed oil 800g shoulder of lamb, cubed 1 tbsp plain flour Salt and pepper 2 large onions 3 garlic cloves, crushed 1 inch grated ginger 1 tbsp chilli powder 1 tbsp roasted garam masala 1 tbsp ground turmeric 1x 400g can tomatoes 100g creamed coconut 1 chicken or lamb stock cube 125g spinach leaves To serve Natural yoghurt

Method 1. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a frying pan.

2. Place the lamb cubes, flour salt and pepper into a polythene bag and shake the bag to coat the meat in the flour.

3. Fry in 2 batches in the frying pan and transfer the meat into the slow cooker.

4. Fry the onion, garlic, ginger and spices in the remaining oil for 2 minutes and add to the meat.

5. Place the creamed coconut and stock cube into a jug and add 400mls hot water and stir well. Add to the slow cooker with the tinned tomatoes. Stir well and cook on high for 4 hours. Stir the spinach into the hot curry for 5 minutes just before serving.

6. Add a spoonful yogurt to each serving.

Serves 4

Thai Coconut Curry Sauce Ingredients 200mls coconut milk 1 tsp crushed garlic 1 tsp grated ginger 1 tsp pureed lemon grass 2 tbsp crunchy peanut butter 1 tbsp demerera sugar 1 tsp fresh lime juice 1 small red chilli, finely chopped Pinch of turmeric 350g cooked turkey, chicken or prawns 2 tbsp freshly chopped coriander

Method 1. Place all the ingredients into a pan and boil gently for 2 minutes to thicken, add leftover cooked chicken and prawn and simmer gently until heated through.

2. Serve with Thai rice or noodles.

Serves 2-3 Cooks Tip – For a speedier store cupboard version. Add an Oxo Aromatic Asian Stock Cube to a can of coconut milk. Just add peanut butter, sugar, lime juice and red chilli. Heat through, add chosen cooked ingredients and serve.

Use fruits such as kiwi, persimmon, mango, pomegranate, physalis, fresh or tinned lychee, fresh pineapple and serve with coconut yoghurt and either lime, pineapple or mango jelly. Deliciously refreshing after a spicy curry. It is also a great way to introduce children to the more exotic fruits which are in season this time of year.

horpe Salvin is a pretty village which lies between Worksop and Harthill in South Yorkshire. The village is steeped in history and takes its name from Knight Ralph Salvin, who owned the village in 1284.

Earlier mentions of the settlement in the Domesday book was referred to as Rynkenild Thorp, and remains of a Roman road were found to the West of the village, which is now known as Packman Lane, and by 1339 the village was known as Thorp Salvain.

North Nottinghamshire. He was also instrumental in the design and surveying of Wollaton Hall in Nottingham. Built on the site of an earlier Manor, the hall was said to be the inspiration for ‘Torquilstone’ castle from Sir Walter Scott’s romantic historical novel ‘Ivanhoe.’ Over the years the house fell into decline and was partially demolished in the 1820s, leaving the remains as we see them to this day. The hall is privately owned and can be clearly seen from the village, the church, and for miles around.

It is a real treat!

The village boasts the spectacular ruins of Thorpe Hall, which was constructed in 1570 by the English architect Robert Smythson, who designed many notable houses during the Elizabethan era, including Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire, Doddington Hall, in Lincolnshire and Worksop Manor Lodge in

St. Peters Church is such an Interesting little building which dates back to 1130. The wonderful Tudor porch shields the stunning ancient doorway, which is adorned with intricate stonework ‘tympanum,’ the semi-circular decoration above the door. Inside there is magnificent Norman font with

incredible carving in the stonework representing the seasons, extraordinary artisanry, beyond the usual stone masonry found on other fronts. There is also a chained bible which dates back to 1621, and for some reason is known as ‘Bills Bible’. Look out for the medieval windows on the north wall, as they originally came from Worksop Priory, after the dissolution of the priory in 1539. The windows were restored in around 1840. The church yard is a haven for wildlife, and many of the stones bear unusual carvings with mysterious sculpted faces. There is a magnificent view of the ruined hall from here too!

This ‘all season’ walk is blessed with wonderful viewpoints, including the tranquil beauty of the Chesterfield canal as it meanders through the charming countryside, which is guaranteed to offer the chance of some peaceful contemplation.

Waterways are a wonderful place to unwind and get back to nature, and are bursting with wildlife, flora, and fauna. This stretch has an impressive number of locks too; Top Treble Lock is a staircase of three locks, if you are lucky you may get to see

this incredible piece of engineering in action! It really is a lovely spot and would be a fantastic location for a picnic, or to warm up with a flask of hot tea!

Bordering Thorpe Salvin is Netherthorpe airfield, which is now operated by Sheffield Aero Club. The airfield began by offering facilities for private pilots in the 1930s, using their own aircraft.

In 1940 the RAF arrived on the site and many secret missions were conducted from this base during the second world war.

The flying club today offers a variety of airborne experiences, from pilot training to acrobatics and has a bar and restaurant on site, which is open to the public.

The perfect end to this great little walk is a visit to the local village pub, The Parish Oven, it is family friendly and accept well behaved dogs too!

Directions 1. We begin this delightful little walk at the

Parish Oven pub, with your back to the carpark, turn left and proceed out of the village along the footpath, following the main Worksop Road. After a short distance, the path ends, so use caution walking along this next stretch.

2. Continue along passing a grassed area and a recreational field and walk along the roadside until you reach the end of the village.

3. When you reach the national speed limit signs you will see a small kissing gate to your left and the pathway which is signposted.

4. Proceed through the gate and follow the field edge track which is next to ancient woodland known as Old Meadow Woods.

Continue along until you reach another kissing gate at the corner of the field.

5. Go through the gate and proceed along the hedge lined path for a short distance, then you will see some steps which lead on to a metal gate, follow the track which runs by the canal and continue along until you reach woodland (Hawkes Wood).

6. Remain on the track and proceed along until you reach a waymarked intersection of paths. Turn right and follow the woodland edge track. Look out for the striking ruins of the Elizabethan manor house Thorpe Hall.

7. Continue along the woodland path until you reach a signpost directional down to the right. Follow the path right along a slight descent until you reach a bridge over the canal, cross over and join the towpath, keeping the canal to your right.

8. Walk along the towpath, you will reach a low bridge. Go under the bridge and continue along passing by the weir and crossing over the railed walkway proceeding along until you reach Top Treble Lock, the perfect spot for a flask of tea!

9. Next, walk under the bridge, and go up the steps and cross over the canal to reach the woodland on the opposite side. You will see a path, turn right along the track, and continue through the woods, following the direction of the canal until the path veers away and out of the woods.

10. Once out of the woods turn right and follow the track, you will pass a water works depot and eventually reach the steps near the metal gate at the beginning of the walk.

11. Walk back up the steps and retrace your route back to the pub.

What Has 2024 Got In Store?

Are you the type of person who’s looking forward to what’s coming your way in 2024, whatever that may be!? Or are you feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and unsure about facing another challenging year ahead? By Chris Collins, Life Coach.

o you struggle to bounce back from setbacks and find it challenging to cope with stress or change? Does it lead you to think less clearly and make poor decisions or perhaps no decisions, even avoiding things altogether?

If this is you and you want to change things up for the better, then you’re by no means alone and I have something on the way that will help!

If you have seen my early editorials in Made or on social media/LinkedIn, you will know that I’ve personally been through some truly life changing events. How do I and others like me successfully get through these challenges relatively unscathed? What makes the difference?

Legacy or leaving something behind is really what drove me to become a Professional Coach in the first place, and with that in mind, I’m putting together a free virtual monthly Resilience Group where you can learn, share, and work through current challenges together. Plus, I’ll run a more structured low cost, Group Resilience Training/Coaching programme that launches in Feb 2024 and that will be delivered remotely over Zoom.

It will consist of 7 x 1Hr live sessions over 7 weeks, with a little homework between sessions, plus a workbook that mirrors the training for you to complete and keep at the end of the programme for your ongoing Resilience Plan development.
