Extra special deliveries T
here must be something in the water at one of our sites, where two colleagues celebrated their part in a mini baby-boom… on the same day. But Operations Supervisor David Johnston and Driver Dean McLaughlin admitted it might have had more to do with lockdown than any special properties at their Northern Ireland site. Our Belfast site handles an average 6,500 drops a day, but General Manager Brian Murray says the deliveries of David’s son Eóghan and Dean’s daughter Eva-Paige were the icing on the cake. It probably has more to do with lockdown than anything else,” says David, who used to be known as Wee Dee until the birth. “Dean and I have had a chat and compared notes about how exhausted we both are. “There have been a few sleepless nights but Eóghan is just perfect really.” ¼ÓèÛÖ áà× áØ æÚ× ý àÓÞ `_ ½ßâÞáë×× of the Year nominees, adds: “I’d really love to win that award but no matter what happens, I’m already a winner with the birth of Eóghan.” Dean, who covers the whole of Northern Ireland, jokes: “We agreed the TV must have been rubbish that day. Eva-Paige is our second child as we also have a four-year-old son Eli, but it’s no less tiring.”
PASSION “Working in this industry for 21 years, I’ve learned that Passion is the key – your heart has to be in this line of work to produce the best outcome for customers and for yourself. “I always aim to be the best I can be and deliver the best service. I’ve brought queries home and called sites after hours to ensure collections and deliveries are made and then called the customer to inform them. Passion is to love the job you do and feel proud of what you’ve achieved.” Rachel Hartley, Account Executive, Print Logistics, Leeds

The Runcorn record-breakers became only the second sort centre in the business’ history to sort a million letters in 24 hours… or 1,008,504 to be precise. nun, a convict and a mysterious lady in black helped lighten the mood and raise thousands of pounds for a good cause. Even a Grease tribute pair got in on the act as colleagues at our Basildon site joined the fancy dress fun to raise cash for mental health charity MIND. Getting to know… … Formula 1, Madonna and travel fanatic Kim Ives, our new CES Manager, on working together to take the fast track to success. You only joined in March, so what’s your background? I’ve worked for 23 years in the media industry in local and regional newspapers from Birmingham to Basildon in Essex. I started in telesales and worked my way up to commercial director before moving into Learning and Development for two major newspaper chains.
ÏÚÓæ Óä× ëáçä ýäåæ impressions of DHL? The people are amazing. Super friendly, super open and super helpful so the values of Passion and Can Do seem to be in everyone’s DNA. It sounds really corny but it really is just like one big family.
What’s your motto? Work hard, play hard and live life to the full because this isn’t a dress rehearsal.
Where are you based?
“We’re aiming to certify 80% of our colleagues as GoGreen Specialists, so that As One we all become experts in green logistics and make a personal contribution to the success of Mission 2050.”
I live in Banbury in Oxfordshire but spent quite a lot of time in the City as a teenager with my grandparents, which is how I’ve got a bit of a southern twang.
How do you relax? I’m a big Formula 1 fan and Ross Brawn is my hero closely followed by Michael Schumacher. I’ve been to the Grand Prix at Silverstone a few times and once joined the Ferrari
fans (Tifosi) at Monza in Milan which was amazing. I’m also just a little bit obsessed with Madonna and have seen her eight times.
Best holiday destination? I like city breaks, so New York and San Francisco, but if it’s longer it would have to be Jamaica or the Greek islands for the people watching, culture and food.
What was your ambition as a teenager? I studied to be an accountant, but after a number of weeks of work experience it soon became very evident that my future had to be working with people rather than numbers.
What kind of outlook do you bring to the role of developing the culture in the business? I love life and at heart I think I will always be 19! I’ve got lots of energy and like to have fun, so hopefully that will come across in the CES programmes we’re going to be running. The people I’ve met at DHL are very down to earth and like to enjoy their work, so it’s a good match for me.
Got any book, ýÞß áä Ôáê å׿ recommendations? I love reading, especially psychological thrillers by Stephen King and Harlan Coben. Film-wise, it’s anything by Martin Scorcese or Quentin Tarantino and the best box set by a mile is Blacklist by James Spader.

Celebrating our loyal long (and not so long) servers
Andy’s our stop-gap star Andy Clarke started with DHL as a stop-gap job in 2001… and he loved it so much he’s still here 20 years later. The Night Supervisor started in the year Google launched, Britney Spears topped the charts with Baby One More Time and Furbies were the best-selling toys. Since joining from college he’s gone on to do almost every job at our Basildon site, from the warehouse to Operations and even Acting Day and Night Manager. “As much as the work is hard and ÖÛÿ ÕçÞæ Óæ æÛß×å æÚ× â×áâÞ× Ú×ä× Óä× excellent and the Managers are really
supportive, so you feel like you’re part of a strong team,” he says. “I love the fact that we just get on with it. There aren’t many places like it.” Married Arsenal fan Andy enjoys sharing his experience with new starters, and admits: “I love the fact that there’s a career path here, that if you have ambition and want to move up, there are ways of accessing training.” So what’s been the main change since he started? “That’s easy,” insists 39-year-old Andy: “Reward and recognition is fantastic now in every way, from bonuses to little treats.”

How long with DHL? I started in March, so not long, but I’m really enjoying it and everyone has made me feel very welcome.
What does the job entail and what’s the challenge for 2021?
I oversee the business as usual HR activities such as employee relations and site moves. Challenges ahead are supporting the business back to post-Covid normality and what that will look like for DHL and ensuring service levels are maintained. 18 Yello!
Describe yourself in three words. Loyal, pragmatic and honest.
What are your hobbies?
When I get a chance, reading – anything and everything. Binge-watching a box set – usually true crime or vampire-related! (That’s another story...) Travel is my true passion, but not in 2020.
Three dinner party guests (alive or otherwise).
Marco Pierre White – He can cook the dinner. Best steak I’ve ever eaten was in one of his restaurants. Piers Morgan – for conversation, you either love him or hate him. I think he’s great. Adele – to provide the entertainment and I think she’s brilliant. What a night it would be!
