hen Marie Turner was no longer able to give blood through ill health, her son vowed to pick up the baton and reach 100 donations in her honour. Since then, Ryton-based Linehaul Driver Dave Turner has saved countless lives by regularly donating three-quarters of a pint to reach the milestone. “She got me into it in 1993 and we used to go together, so when she was diagnosed with diabetes I promised her I’d carry on to reach the 100,” he says. The landmark donation was all the more poignant because 49-year-old Dave’s mother and inspiration died from Covid complications just months earlier in November 2020. “She didn’t get to see me hit the 100 but I’m sure she’d have looked down éÛæÚ Ó åßÛÞ× ¾áä æÚ× ý äåæ æÛß× Á ÚÓÖ Ó huge bruise on my arm so maybe that was a sign,” he smiles.

ur new central hub looks set to be up and running two years from today. The size of 22 football pitches and one of the most automated centres ever built, it will be able to handle more than 56,000 parcels every hour. Work on the project, which will create more than 600 new jobs, is already underway less than a mile from our existing hub in Ryton. “Hub 2 will change the whole outlook of our business and will give us a solid foundation to take the next leap forward so we continue to grow,” says Head of Operational Support Richard Wenham.” He has spent the past two years developing plans to ensure the new bespoke centre meets the everyday needs of colleagues and customers alike. Hub 2 is part of a wider expansion programme that has only been made possible by the Passion and Can Do attitude of UK colleagues. “Their hard work and dedication has been crucial in securing the investment from DPDHL group to fund this project, and shows what can be achieved when we work As One.”

We have the funding to build and get the site operating in 2024 and the past two years have shown we have the people across all our functions to get us there.

Hub 2 will be a massive boost for the local economy and will drive growth. A third Hub could even be on the cards before 2030.

Innovation stations Our existing hub has capacity to handle 24,000 parcels an hour, but Hub 2 will more than double that. The new crossdock area – where caged parcels by-pass the sorting system from other sites – will be capable of handling 15,000 items each hour. A sort machine capable of handling all shapes and sizes of parcels has been designed by an in-house team using known technology.

The BEST of the best “I felt like a winner just being there,” says Employee of the Year Anna

M

ail Sorter Anna Zerbok is the same outside work as in it: enthusiastic, optimistic, caring and always thinking of others. But I can only do that with the mutual help, trust and respect of my colleagues.” Regional Sortation Manager Danielle Easton nominated Anna for her part in helping the site deliver outstanding results last year: “She has a genuine heart, pride in the team and Passion for DHL Parcel UK.”

What our other nominees said about the awards…

1

Alexis Whitehouse, Real Estate Administrator “It’s such a nice feeling to know how much I am appreciated, not only by my manager but also by the company. rue to her word she’s fresh from helping out some of her 71-strong team on the belt, just months after taking over at one of our main Scottish sites. It’s been a time of change at Livingston, with drivers taking on new routes and éÓä×Úáçå× åæÓü Þ×è×Þå ÓàÖ åÚÛØæ æÛß×å being reviewed. But Mechelle has been delighted by the response from her team. “Everyone was so welcoming and full of Passion for the job. They just needed to be more of a team, so hopefully I can help build that spirit,” says Mechelle, who has

a wealth of experience in the industry. “I want to build a much stronger As One mentality because we are all in this together – there can’t be even the slightest hint of them and us.”

and let them know if they had dropped below service levels, so they can take responsibility for both. “If customers let us know we’ve done a good job, we have to recognise the people who’ve made that happen. If there are areas where we can improve it’s equally important to let people know because they might not even be aware otherwise.” Mechelle values rewarding and recognising her team and the positive impact that has on the business: “It’s crucial that people feel appreciated and know you’re with them.”

Drew Mackay played a major role in assessing how to get the Livingston site back on track after a spell in the doldrums. The Regional Site Support Manager was given a wide brief to look at all aspects of on-site operations to see which areas could be improved. “The team in place was very good and committed but they just needed leadership, which was where Mechelle came in,” he says. “There was nothing major wrong but a few things needed tweaking here and there.” A full review of drivers’ routes and tweaks to work rotas to ensure colleagues were in place and active during the site’s busiest times were æÚ× æéá ßÓÛà æÚäçåæå áØ æÚ× ä×åÚçĀ × “It’s like managing a football team. There’s still a little way to go and the higher volumes will be a test but we’re all together now.”

“Now the ship has a captain again we know where we’re going and it’s an incredibly happy crew,” says Daniel Tomaszewicz. The Site Supervisor said the Peak months put pressure on the Scottish site, which had been without a manager since November: “It was tough and pressurised but we came through and since Mechelle has been here we’re going from strength to strength. Daniel, who has led the 1.30am shift for three years, adds: “The attitude has changed since she arrived. There’s a structure and everyone’s aware of the part they’re playing. “No one likes change, so when we didn’t have a permanent manager for a while it was a bit unsettling. Now we have a leader and the ÓæßáåâÚ×ä× Ûå ÕáßâÞ׿×Þë ÖÛü ×ä×àæ # Minor tweaks have added structure to the team, which has also been boosted by a stronger culture of reward and recognition. And he adds: “If you do a good job, you get mentioned… it’s nice to know you’re all working together for the same thing.”

The West End routes were run by two drivers and now it’s six. “That’s great because it means the business is growing and that means better job security for all of us. The business is always looking after us and I’ve felt that more and more since DHL took over.”

Staying busy

James has earned his spurs

S

ecurity and great friendships are the key to a long and fruitful career with DHL. That’s according to colleague James Gosling, who has clocked up 30 years. After moving south from Derbyshire as a teenager he joined our Harrow site straight from college as an administrator and soon realised he loved the fast pace of the job. So much so that, three decades on, he’s still faithfully clocking in at midnight as Greenford’s Assistant Night Manager.

“I worked at Harrow and Park Royal before ending up where I am, and I’ve got to say I love the job and the people. I wouldn’t have stayed otherwise”

James started as a 17-year-old before stints as a driver controller, operations controller and night administrator. James’s routine of ensuring the lorries are sorted and mail correctly processed and loaded means the night passes quickly. “That’s another good thing because if you’re busy and working with a team of friends, it’s fun,” he says. The 47-year-old spends his down time watching Tottenham home and away, even managing to travel to watch them in Europe when he can. James, who lists former Spurs and England star Teddy Sheringham as his all-time favourite, says: “I’m very, very happy in my work because the people I see each night are great. If I get stressed, I go to the football and let it all out.”
