Mil y tantas diferencias Para el año 2016 el Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo (MADC) decide ofrecer al público una exposición de fotografía con artistas costarricenses de gran trayectoria. La propuesta de la curadora encargada del proyecto, Adriana Collado-Chaves, reunió a tres nombres: Giorgio Timms, Jorge Albán y Jaime David Tischler; cuya intención fue hacerlos confluir en torno a una misma temática. El eje que ella interpreta como un factor común, es que a lo largo de sus carreras estos tres fotógrafos han representado masculinidades que distan de una forma u otra de aquellas modeladas por la sociedad patriarcal. Pero, a su vez, son visiones y aproximaciones de masculinidades que difieren entre ellas.

Para varias generaciones estos tres nombres son referentes obligados de la historia de la fotografía en Costa Rica. Hoy muchos jóvenes conocen a Timms y Albán, más por su rol activo en el campo de la docencia universitaria que por su producción artística. En todo caso, conscientes de que una generación de jóvenes -y otros no tanto- posiblemente no habían tenido aún la posibilidad de ver con distancia la obra de estos tres artistas, ni comprender su impacto en diferentes espacios y tiempos, esta muestra, sin duda, allanó el camino para que artistas jóvenes pudieran abordar y aproximarse a representaciones de género, desde una perspectiva más amplia, inclusiva y diversa.

La propuesta curatorial implicó generar diálogos entre obras, tanto de distintos momentos de un mismo artista, como entre ellos mismos. Albán y Timms facilitaron mucha documentación y fotografías de sus colecciones personales y produjeron expresamente obra inédita para la exposición. En el caso de Tischler no resultó posible reunir piezas claves que la curadora había querido incluir en la exhibición y que sin duda habrían sumado mucho contenido a la narrativa propuesta. Tischler es un artista que tiene muchos años de no exponer su obra públicamente, por lo que esto significó un reto curatorial. Afortunadamente, el MADC cuenta dentro de su colección con obra significativa del artista, que es de extraordinaria calidad e importancia en su carrera. Esto, y varios préstamos de coleccionistas privados, permitió a los diversos públicos darse una idea del mundo de Tischler.

Esta exposición me reafirmó cuán vital es que, desde los museos, se conserve la obra de un artista y se convierta en patrimonio colectivo; pues en algunos casos, estos habrían dejado perder su propia obra, sea como resultado de un ego que se auto-edita, por descuido o por falta de estímulo para entender que, una vez lanzadas al público, las imágenes tienen vida propia.

Ciertamente, en el momento en que una imagen pasa a formar parte de una colección estatal, se transforma en una especie de dispositivo que contiene un fragmento de la memoria de todos, una herencia cultural colectiva.

Otra reflexión relevante, desde el discurso curatorial, fue el hecho de tener entre manos un proyecto con tres fotógrafos, que si bien comparten un eje principal como detonante curatorial; evidencian muchas diferencias. La inquietud principal era ¿cómo articular el diseño museográfico a partir de sus contrastes?, insistir en enfoques comunes era posible, pero quizás no pertinente a esta propuesta. Collado optó por evidenciar esas diferencias, tres personajes con sus visiones, instalados en tres salas con sus particularidades; lo cual, en ningún momento, negaba que existieran temas comunes. Al contrario, estos subtextos, la curadora los fue tejiendo cuidadosamente a lo largo de toda la muestra, una acupuntura de registros fotográficos que permitían al espectador, conforme transitaba por los espacios, irlos descubriendo y enlazando; construir su propia narrativa.

Las potentes imágenes que Albán, Timms y Tischler han creado, siguen hoy desafiando prejuicios sociales, con la misma fuerza (o tal vez más) que lo hicieron hace veinte años. Así son las obras que alcanzan cierta aura de universalidad: siguen por muchos años vigentes desafiando el statu quo que se aferra a antiguos (y obsoletos) paradigmas y que se resiste al cambio. Los artistas son como chamanes; nos revelan realidades que no queremos ver y con valentía, nos abren los ojos para enfrentarnos al mundo que está por venir.

Al final, esta muestra, tal vez reunió más diferencias que similitudes entre estos tres fotógrafos; a veces estamos más cerca por que somos diferentes.

One Thousand and So Many Differences In 2016 the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MADC) decided to present the public with a photography exhibition of established Costa Rican artists. The proposal put forward by the curator assigned to the project -Adriana Collado-Chaves -featured three names: Giorgio Timms, Jorge Albán and Jaime David Tischler, with the aim of focusing on a common theme. The main leitmotif she interprets as a common factor is that, throughout the course of their careers, these three photographers have represented masculinities that, in one way or another, differ from those shaped by the patriarchal society and yet, in turn, are outlooks and approaches to masculinities that also differ from one another.

For several generations these three names have been benchmarks in the history of photography in Costa Rica. These days many young people know Timms and Albán more for their active role in the field of university teaching than for their artistic production. In any event, given that a generation of young people - and others not so much so - had possibly not yet had the chance to see the work of these three artists in retrospect, this show undoubtedly paved the way for young artists to address and approach gender representations from a broader perspective and a more inclusive and diverse standpoint.

The curatorial proposal involved generating dialogue between works, from different stages in each of the artists’ careers, as well as between each other. Albán and Timms provided a wealth of documentation and photographs from their personal collections and purposefully produced previously unseen work for the exhibition. In Tischler’s case it was not possible to obtain key pieces that the curator had wished to include in the exhibition and that would certainly have added vital input to the proposed narrative. Tischler is an artist who has not exhibited his work publicly for many years, which posed a curatorial challenge. Fortunately, the MADC’s collection includes key works by the artist, which are of an extraordinary quality and significance to his career. This fortunate situation, together with several loans from private collectors, provided the varied audiences with insight into Tischler’s universe.

This exhibition reaffirmed my conviction that it is vital that museums preserve the work of individual artists and that they form part of the collective heritage, since, in some cases, artists may have allowed their own work to be lost, either as the result of a self-editing ego, or through carelessness or a lack of understanding that, once they are exhibited before the public, the images take on a life of their own. Certainly, once an image enters a public collection it becomes a device of sorts, which contains a fragment of everyone's memory; a collective cultural heritage.

Another observation that was relevant to the curatorial discourse was that the task at hand a project with three photographers who despite sharing a central focus that serves as a curatorial trigger, also differ in many aspects. The main concern was how to articulate the museographic design based on their contrasts. The insistence on common approaches was possible, but perhaps not relevant to this proposal. Collado chose to highlight these differences; three figures with their own vision installed in three museum halls with their own particular traits, but at no point denying, the common themes that connected them. On the contrary, these subtexts were meticulously interwoven by the curator throughout the exhibition, an accunpuncture of photographic records that, little by little, revealed themselves to the viewers as they moved through the spaces, allowing them to identify and interlink them; to build their own narrative.

The powerful images that Albán, Timms and Tischler have created continue to challenge social prejudices to this day with the same (or perhaps even more) force that they did 20 years ago. This is often the case with works that take on a certain aura of universality: they continue to remain current for many years, challenging the statu quo that clings to outdated (and obsolete) paradigms and resists change. Artists are like shamans, they reveal realities that we do not wish to see, and courageously pry open our eyes to face the world that is to come.

Ultimately, this exhibition perhaps brought together more differences than similarities that link these three photographers; sometimes we are closer because we are different.

A Thousand and One Men Three Photographers

Si culturalmente no contrapusiéramos los hombres a las mujeres, no existiría el concepto de masculinidad definido por oposición al de femineidad. Pero en cambio, aprendemos en el gran teatro del género: ensayamos cotidianamente roles sociales sobre un escenario donde confluyen relaciones de poder, reproducción y deseo. En Occidente, la masculinidad patriarcal ha sido por siglos la protagonista y el sometimiento histórico de las mujeres les ha generado a los hombres múltiples beneficios.

If, from a cultural point of view, men were not contrasted with women, there would be no concept of masculinity defined in opposition to that of femininity.

But instead we learn in the grand theatre of gender: we rehearse social roles every day on a stage where power relations, as well as relations of reproduction and desire converge. In the West, patriarchal masculinity has been the protagonist for centuries and the historical subjugation of women has given men multiple benefits.

Pero ellos no son todos iguales. También los hay subordinados al patriarcado en relaciones de dominación y opresión. Tal es el caso de las masculinidades homosexuales, que la visión hegemónica degrada al nivel más bajo en la jerarquía de género entre hombres, por asimilarlas a la femineidad. También están las masculinidades cómplices con el proyecto hegemónico, aquellas que no lo suscriben, pero lo toleran; y las marginales, donde el género se interrelaciona con vulnerabilidades grupales.1

But they are not all the same. There are also those who are subordinated to the patriarchy in relations of domination and oppression. Such is the case of homosexual masculinities, which the hegemonic view degrades to the lowest level in the gender hierarchy among men, by assimilating them to femininity. There are also masculinities that are complicit with the hegemonic project, that do not subscribe to it, but tolerate it; and the marginal ones, where gender is interrelated with group vulnerabilities1.

Esta exposición reúne el trabajo de varias décadas de tres fotógrafos costarricenses, pioneros en la representación fotográfica de masculinidades alternas al proyecto patriarcal: Giorgio Timms, Jorge Albán y Jaime David Tischler. La exhibición se articula en torno a tres ejes temáticos presentados en las salas dos, tres y cuatro del museo.

This exhibition brings together the work produced over several decades by three Costa Rican photographers who are pioneers of the photographic representation of masculinities that go against the patriarchal project: Giorgio Timms, Jorge Albán and Jaime David Tischler.

The exhibition focuses on three core issues presented in halls two, three and four of the museum.

Esta sala explora la relación del cuerpo y el espacio público en las prácticas de configuración de masculinidades. La obra de Albán contextualiza esta mutua transformación: habitamos espacios que nos habitan, tal el caso del guarda en su caseta o el hombre que asocia su potencia sexual con excesos de velocidad en carretera.

La construcción de identidades de género masculinas se cruza con otras estructuras de organización de la práctica social, como edad, etnia, orientación sexual, estrato socioeconómico o nacionalidad. Todo ello confluye en las calles. Timms, quien desde el inicio de su carrera ha sido documentalista de la vida en la ciudad, nos hace mirar el doble filo del espacio público: tanto como marco normativo de control de la masculinidad patriarcal, como campo de batalla de hombres y mujeres que luchan contra la discriminación.

Por su parte, Jaime David Tischler mira con nostalgia la Costa Rica del pasado y el espacio de convivencia igualitaria que vivió en su niñez: el Balneario Ojo de Agua. El artista evoca un espacio donde hombres y mujeres de todos los tipos, edades, tamaños y clases se instalaban en una zona de tregua temporal respecto a la expresión de sus cuerpos en espacios normativos de masculinidad hegemónica.

This hall explores the relationship between the body and the public sphere in the practice of constructing masculinities. Albán’s work contextualises this mutual transformation: we inhabit spaces that inhabit us, such is the case of the guard in his security booth or the man who associates his sexual prowess with speeding.

The construction of male gender identities intersects with other structures that influence social settings, such as age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status or nationality. All this comes together on the streets. Timms, who, from the outset of his career has documented life in the city, forces us to look at the double-edged sword of the public sphere: both as a regulatory framework for the control of patriarchal masculinity, and as a battlefield of men and women struggling against discrimination.

For his part, Jaime David Tischler takes a nostalgic look at the Costa Rica of yesteryear and the space of egalitarian coexistence that he experienced in his childhood: the Ojo de Agua Water Park. The artist evokes a space where men and women of all types, ages, sizes and classes settled in an area of temporary truce with respect to the expression of their bodies in normative spaces of hegemonic masculinity.

SALA 4 MASCULINIDADES LAS NUESTRAS HALL 4 THESE MASCULINITIES OF OURS En esta sala se muestran obras que en nuestro país dejaron huella, en los albores de la representación fotográfica de masculinidades alternas a la patriarcal.

En 1989 Timms ganó una mención de honor y el primer premio del público en el Salón Nacional de Fotografía, con un desnudo masculino. Un año más tarde presentó en el Teatro Nacional la primera exposición individual de fotografía de desnudos masculinos en Costa Rica y Centroamérica. Por el contexto expositivo, la reacción social no fue adversa. En cambio, en 1997, una exposición de Jaime David Tischler fue descolgada con indignación de una galería en el Instituto Tecnológico de Cartago. En esa serie, Tischler había creado una poética del deseo y las relaciones sexuales entre hombres, donde desnudaba su propia identidad de género.

En 1997 Jorge Albán mostró varias chatarras de automóvil sobre las cuales imprimió fotografías de él y su hija desnudos: el ícono de la Virgen con el niño, pero a la inversa. Estas imágenes generarían “un choque” con la perspectiva patriarcal, para la cual la desnudez simultánea de un hombre con una niña podrían ser representaciones evocadoras de violencia sexual pero no de amor filial. Estas imágenes desafían esa mentalidad.

La muestra concluye con una mirada íntima y personal a la forma en que cada artista ha construido, sufrido, vivido y configurado su propia masculinidad.

This room shows works that left their mark on our country, at the dawn of the photographic representation of masculinities that went against those of the patriarchal society.

In 1989 Timms won an honourable mention and the first prize of the public in the National Photography Salon, with a photograph of a male nude. A year later at the National Theatre he presented the first solo exhibition of male nude photography in Costa Rica and Central America. Considering the context of the exhibition, the social reaction was not adverse. In contrast, in 1997, an exhibition by Jaime David Tischler was taken down with indignation from a gallery at the Technological Institute of Cartago. In that series, Tischler had created a poetic of desire and sexual relations between men, in which he exposed his own gender identity.

In 1997 Jorge Albán exhibited several pieces of scrap metal from cars on which he printed photographs of himself and his daughter naked: the icon of the Virgin and Child, but the other way around. These images would generate “a clash” with the patriarchal perspective, for which the simultaneous nudity of a man and a girl could be representations that evoke sexual violence, but not filial love. These images challenge that mentality.

The exhibition concludes with a close and personal look at the way each artist has constructed, suffered, experienced and shaped their own masculinity.

GIORGIO TIMMS Costarricense. Con estudios en Grabado e Historia del Arte, es Bachiller en Fotografía y Máster en Humanidades.

Ha realizado exposiciones individuales en el Café del Teatro Nacional, Museo Nacional de Costa Rica, Sala García Monge, Alianza Francesa, Universidad Veritas y Colegio Universitario de Alajuela, así como múltiples exposiciones colectivas tanto en el Museo de Arte Costarricense, Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo, Universidad de Costa Rica y otras galerías nacionales, como en Museos y Galerías en París, Nueva York, Washington, San Juan de Puerto Rico, Lima y Ciudad de Panamá.

Ganador del Salón Nacional de Fotografía “Manuel Gómez Miralles” de 1987 y de Menciones de Honor en las ediciones del mismo Salón en 1989 y 1991.

Obras suyas forman parte de las colecciones del Museo de Arte de las Américas, en Washington y del Museo de Arte Costarricense.

Se ha desempeñado como Director Fundador de la Escuela de Fotografía, Decano de la Facultad de Imagen y Profesor de la Universidad Veritas, Profesor de la Escuela de Artes Plásticas de la Universidad de Costa Rica y del Colegio Universitario de Alajuela.

JORGE ALBÁN-DOBLES Costarricense. Bachiller en Fotografía y Máster en Comunicación.

Fotógrafo desde 1986. En 2007 da un giro al artecomunicación (http://artenemo.org) y a la construcción de conocimiento solidario usando software libre y licencias alternativas (http://ayerestabaaqui.blogspot.com/).

Sus escritos han sido publicados en La Nación, ArteMedia, ArtStudio Magazine, Efagia, Revista Escena, Memoria Evento Teórico de la Novena y Décima Bienal de la Habana, entre muchos otros. Desde el 2001 es profesor en la Universidad Veritas.

Sus fotografías, audiovisuales, interactivos sociales y digitales han sido presentados en Costa Rica, en el Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo, Museo Histórico Dr. Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia, Museo de Arte Costarricense y Museos del Banco Central. JAIME DAVID-TISCHLER Costarricense. Abogado y artista. Estudió arte y fotografía en Nueva York: en la NYU-Tisch School of the Arts, y en Parsons School of Desing y School of Visual Arts. En Boston estudió en la New England School of Photography y en España en el Centro de Video y la Imagen de Madrid y la Escola de Fotografía GrisArt de Barcelona.

Su obra ha sido expuesta en el Teatro Nacional, en el Museo Histórico Dr. Rafael Ángel Calderón, Museo de Arte Costarricense y Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo, entre otros. Ha presentado más de diez exposiciones individuales y otro tanto de colectivas, en Costa Rica, Dinamarca, Escocia, Estados Unidos, España, Grecia, Italia y Taiwán.

En 1999 fue reconocido con el Premio Nacional Aquileo J. Echeverría en Artes Plásticas. Ese mismo año fundó la Escuela de Fotografía Memorándum. En 2001 fue escogido para representar a Costa Rica en la IV Bienal del Caribe y la 49 Bienal de Venecia; también fue seleccionado en 2005 para la 51 Bienal de Venecia y en 2011 repitió nuevamente en la edición 54 de dicha bienal.

GIORGIO TIMMS Costa Rican. Studies in Printmaking and History of Art, Bachelor’s degree in Photography and a Master in Humanities.

He has had solo shows at the National Theatre Café, the Costa Rican National Museum, the Garcia Monge Gallery, the Alliance Française, Veritas University and the University College of Alajuela, as well as several group exhibitions at both the Costa Rican Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, the University of Costa Rica and other national galleries, as well as museums and galleries in Paris, New York, Washington, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Lima and Panama City.

Winner of the 1987 National “Manuel Gomez Miralles” Photography Award and of Honourable Mentions at the 1989 and 1991 editions of the same Award.

His photography, audio-visuals, and social and digital interactive work have been exhibited in Costa Rica, at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, the Dr. Rafael Angel Calderon Guardia Historical Museum, the Costa Rican Art Museum and the Central Bank Museums. He has exhibited in Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, El Salvador, the United States, France, Holland and Peru. His work is included in important public and private collections.

He received an Honourable Mention at the 1st Central American Emerging Art Competition in 2003 and the 2nd IDB Inter-American Video Biennial of 2004. First Place at La240, 2005; BIENARTE 2005 Selection Award and second place at the 5th Central American Visual Arts Biennial of 2006.

His works are included in the collections of the Art Museum of the Americas, in Washington, and the Museum of Costa Rican Art.

JAIME DAVID-TISCHLER

He has served as Founding Director of the School of Photography, Dean of the Faculty of Image and Professor at the Veritas University, Professor of the School of Visual Arts of the University of Costa Rica and the University College of Alajuela.

Costa Rican. Lawyer and artist. Studied art and photography in New York: at the NYU-Tisch School of the Arts, the Parsons School of Design and the School of Visual Arts. In Boston he studied at the New England School of Photography and in Spain at the Video and Image Centre in Madrid and the Gris Art Photography School in Barcelona.

JORGE ALBÁN-DOBLES Costa Rican. Bachelor’s degree in Photography and Master in Communication.

Photographer since 1986. In 2007, he gives a twist to art-communications (http://artenemo.org) and to the construction of solidarity in knowledge-sharing using open source software and alternative licenses (http:// ayerestabaaqui.blogspot.com/).

His writings have been published in La Nacion newspaper, ArteMedia, ArtStudio Magazine, Efagia, Escena Magazine, Theoretical Event Memoir of the Novena and the 10th Havana Biennial, among many others. He has been a professor at the Veritas University since 2001.

His work has been exhibited at the National Theatre, at the Dr. Rafael Angel Calderon Historical Museum, the Costa Rican Art Museum and the Museum of Art and Contemporary Design, among others. He has had over 10 solo and group exhibitions in Costa Rica, Denmark, Scotland, the United States, Spain, Greece, Italy and Taiwan.

In 1999 he was awarded the Aquileo J. Echeverría National Visual Arts Prize. That same year he founded the Memorandum Photography School. In 2001 he was chosen to represent Costa Rica at the 4th Caribbean Biennial and the 49th Venice Bienniale; he was also selected in 2005 for the 51st Venice Bienniale and in 2011 for its 54th edition.

A Jaime David Tischler por su entusiasmo, el cual, aun siendo posterior a la muestra, ha sido muy favorable y preciado para gestiones ulteriores de puesta en valor de su obra.
